Abstract

A composition for use in treating or preventing colorectal cancer (CRC) comprising or a fraction of Lactococcus lactis supernatant having a molecular weight greater than 100 kDa which may be obtained by filtration through a 100 kDa molecular weight filter. The composition also comprises a physiologically acceptable excipient and the fraction may be a protein fraction of the L. lactis supernatant. The composition may be formulated for oral ingestion, a powder, liquid, paste, cream, tablet, capsule, or caplet or in a food or beverage item. Additionally, the composition may be formulated in a daily dosage. Also claimed is a kit for treating or preventing colorectal cancer wherein a first container comprises the fraction of L. lactis culture supernatant.

Description

Abstract A composition for the treatment or prevention of colorectal cancer (CRC) comprising a supernatant or fraction of *Lactococcus lactis* with a molecular weight greater than 100 kDa, which can be obtained by filtration through a 100 kDa molecular weight filter. The composition further comprises a physiologically acceptable excipient, and the fraction may be a protein fraction of the *Lactococcus lactis* supernatant. The composition can be formulated as a powder, liquid, paste, cream, tablet, capsule, or pouch for oral administration, or in a food or beverage. Additionally, the composition can be formulated as a daily dose. A kit for the treatment or prevention of colorectal cancer is also claimed, wherein a first container contains a fraction of *Lactococcus lactis* culture supernatant.

Claims

1. A composition for use in treating or preventing colorectal cancer (CRC) comprising an effective amount of a fraction of a Lactococcus lactis culture supernatant having a molecular weight greater than 100 kDa.

2. The composition of claim 1, wherein the fraction is a protein fraction of the Lactococcus lactis culture supernatant having a molecular weight greater than 100 kDa.

3. The composition of claim 1 or 2, wherein Lactococcus lactis is absent in the composition.

4. The composition of claims 1-3, wherein the fraction is obtained by filtration of a Lactococcus lactis culture supernatant through a 100 kDa molecular weight filter.

5. The composition of any one of claims 1-4, which is formulated for oral ingestion.

6. The composition of claim 5, which is in the form of a food or beverage item, or a foodor beverage additive.

7. The composition of any one of claims 1-6, which is in the form of a powder, liquid, paste, cream, tablet, capsule, or caplet.

8. The composition of any one of claims 1-7, which is formulated in a daily dosage.

9. A kit for treating or preventing colorectal cancer comprising a container containing a composition of any one of claims 1-8.
