AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Conventional dehydrogenation processes face inefficiencies due to the combustion of fuel in the treatment zone, which reduces stripping performance and results in hydrogen mixing with reaction products, necessitating costly separation steps.

Method used

A process involving a dehydrogenation reactor with particulate solids containing an oxygen carrier material, where hydrogen reacts to form water, followed by fuel injection in a treatment zone with the oxygen carrier material, and subsequent regeneration to restore oxygen content, minimizing oxygen gas in the treatment zone and reducing the need for external fuel.

Benefits of technology

This approach enhances dehydrogenation efficiency by generating sufficient heat through hydrogen combustion and regeneration, reducing the need for supplemental fuel and simplifying product separation, thus lowering operational costs and improving conversion rates.

Abstract

According to one or more embodiments described herein, a method for dehydrogenating hydrocarbons may include contacting a feed stream comprising one or more hydrocarbons with a particulate solid, which may include an oxygen-carrying material, to form hydrogen and one or more products. At least a portion of the hydrogen may react with oxygen from the oxygen-carrying material to form water, reducing the oxygen content in the oxygen-carrying material. The process may include passing the particulate solid from the dehydrogenation reactor to a treatment zone, where a fuel may be injected into the treatment zone, and at least a portion of the fuel may react with oxygen from the oxygen-carrying material of the particulate solid. The gas in the treatment zone may contain 1 mol % or less O2.
