AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Current methods for analyzing surgical videos are inefficient and ineffective in providing surgeons with decision support and facilitating postoperative activities, as they lack the ability to efficiently review and index relevant surgical events and outcomes.

Method used

The development of systems and methods that allow for the analysis of surgical videos by overlaying a surgical timeline with markers for phases, events, and decision-making junctions, enabling surgeons to skip to specific points and index video footage based on surgical phases and events, and generate summaries of surgical procedures.

Benefits of technology

This approach enables surgeons to efficiently review surgical videos, access relevant footage, and analyze surgical outcomes, improving decision-making and postoperative activities by providing a structured and efficient means of accessing and analyzing surgical data.

Abstract

A system for generating decision support data for surgical videos is provided. The system includes at least on processor configured to perform operations including receiving video footage of a surgical procedure performed by a surgeon on a patient in an operating room, implementing a machine learning model on the received video footage to determine an existence of a surgical decision-making junction, the machine learning model being a result of training a machine learning algorithm to detect decision-making junctions using training data based on historical video footage depicting surgical situations, accessing, in a data structure, a correlation between an outcome and a specific action taken at the decision-making junction, and based on the determined existence of the decision-making junction and the accessed correlation, outputting a recommendation to at least one of a user device or a user interface related to the specific action.
