[0017] The section headings used in this application are intended only to improve readability and do not limit the scope of each section in the disclosed embodiments and techniques to only that section. Certain features are described using examples of fifth generation (5G) wireless protocols. However, the applicability of the disclosed techniques is not limited to only 5G wireless systems.

[0018] The new radio (NR) technology of the fifth generation (5G) mobile communication system is designed and developed for both mobile phones and vertical use cases. In addition to latency, reliability and availability, UE energy efficiency is also critical to 5G. Currently, 5G devices may need to be charged regularly, depending on the individual's usage time. In general, 5G devices consume tens of milliwatts in the Radio Resource Control (RRC) idle / inactive state and hundreds of milliwatts in the RRC connected state. Designing for extended battery life is beneficial to improving energy efficiency and better user experience.

[0019] Energy efficiency is even more critical for user equipment (UE) without a continuous energy source (e.g., UE using small rechargeable and single button batteries). In vertical use cases, sensors and actuators are widely deployed for listening, measuring, charging, etc. Typically, their batteries are non-rechargeable and are expected to last for at least a few years. Wearable devices include smart watches, rings, electronic health-related devices, and medical listening devices. With typical battery capacities, it is challenging to maintain up to 1 to 2 weeks as needed.

[0020] The power consumption depends on the length of the configured wake-up period (e.g., paging cycle). In order to meet the above-mentioned battery life requirements, it is expected that an extended discontinuous reception (eDRX) cycle with a large value will be used, resulting in high latency, which is not suitable for such services with requirements for both long battery life and low latency. For example, in a fire detection and extinguishing use case, fire shutters can be closed and fire sprinklers can be opened by actuators within 1 to 2 seconds after the sensor detects a fire; the long eDRX cycle cannot meet the latency requirements. eDRX is obviously not suitable for latency-critical use cases. Therefore, one objective of the present application is to propose an ultra-low power mechanism that is able to support low latency in Rel-18 (e.g., lower than eDRX latency).

[0021] Currently, UEs need to wake up periodically once per DRX cycle, which dominates power consumption during periods without signaling or data traffic. If UEs can wake up only when they are triggered (e.g., paging), power consumption can be significantly reduced. This can be achieved by using a wake-up signal to trigger the main radio and a separate receiver that can listen for the wake-up signal with ultra-low power consumption. The main radio works for data transmission and reception, and unless it is turned on, it can be turned off or set to deep sleep.

[0022] Such techniques should be primarily targeted at low-power wake-up signals / wake-up receivers (WUS / WUR) for power-sensitive small form factor devices including IoT use cases (such as industrial sensors, controllers) and wearable devices. The present application provides solutions to the above-discussed problems and other problems.

[0023] Example 1 (Starting Conditions)

[0024] The measurement of synchronization signal / PBCH (Physical Broadcast Channel) block (SSB) in the serving cell requires the UE to wake up and turn on the main radio (MR). In order to save UE power consumption, the UE can perform relaxation measurements in the serving cell. This relaxation measurement in the serving cell includes the UE measuring LP-WUS in the serving cell instead of measuring SSB, or the UE measuring SSB in the serving cell every long period.

[0025] In some embodiments, the UE first measures the SSB in the serving cell. When the UE meets the start condition of the relaxed measurement in the serving cell, the UE may perform the relaxed measurement in the serving cell. When the UE meets the stop condition of the relaxed measurement, the UE measures the SSB in the serving cell.

[0026] If the UE has to measure the SSB of a neighboring cell, the UE has to turn on the MR, and at the same time the UE can measure the SSB of the serving cell. Therefore, if the UE measures a neighboring cell, the UE can measure the serving cell.

[0027] Possible starting conditions for relaxed measurements in the serving cell are as follows:

[0028] If the UE is not at the cell edge, the UE can perform relaxed measurement in the serving cell. Therefore, the start condition of the relaxed measurement is that the measurement result of the SSB is higher than the threshold. When the measurement result of the SSB is higher than the threshold, the UE starts to perform relaxed measurement in the serving cell. The gNB can broadcast the threshold for relaxed serving cell measurement in the SIB.

[0029] If the UE is static or has low mobility, the UE may perform relaxed measurements in the serving cell. Therefore, the start condition for the relaxed measurements is that the change in the SSB measurement result is lower than a threshold. When the change in the SSB measurement result is lower than a threshold for a duration, the UE starts performing relaxed measurements in the serving cell. The gNB may broadcast the threshold and duration for relaxed serving cell measurements in the SIB.

[0030] If the UE does not start neighbor cell measurement, the UE can perform relaxed measurement in the serving cell. Therefore, the start condition of the relaxed measurement is that the measurement result of the SSB is higher than the offset plus the threshold of the start condition of the neighbor cell measurement. When the measurement result of the SSB is higher than the threshold (e.g., X), the UE will not start the neighbor cell measurement. When the measurement result of the SSB is higher than the value of the offset plus the threshold of the start condition of the neighbor cell measurement (e.g., offset+X), the UE starts the relaxed measurement in the serving cell. The gNB can broadcast the offset for the relaxed serving cell measurement in the system information block (SIB).

[0031] If the UE does not start relaxed neighbor cell measurement, the UE can perform relaxed measurement in the serving cell. Therefore, the start condition of the relaxed measurement is that the measurement result of the SSB is higher than the offset plus the threshold of the start condition of the relaxed neighbor cell measurement. When the measurement result of the SSB is higher than the threshold (e.g., X), the UE can start the relaxed neighbor cell measurement. When the measurement result of the SSB is higher than the value of the offset plus the threshold of the start condition of the relaxed neighbor cell measurement (e.g., offset+X), the UE starts the relaxed measurement in the serving cell. The gNB can broadcast the offset for the relaxed serving cell measurement in the SIB.

[0032] If the UE does not start neighbor cell measurement, the UE can perform relaxed measurement in the serving cell. Therefore, the start condition of the relaxed measurement is that the measurement result of the SSB is higher than the offset plus the threshold of the start condition of the neighbor cell measurement and lower than the offset plus the threshold of the start condition of the relaxed neighbor cell measurement. When the measurement result of the SSB is higher than the threshold (e.g., X), the UE can start the relaxed neighbor cell measurement. When the measurement result of the SSB is higher than the threshold (e.g., Y), the UE will not start the neighbor cell measurement. When the measurement result of the SSB is higher than the value of the offset 1 (offset1) plus the threshold of the start condition of the neighbor cell measurement (e.g., a, offset1+Y), and lower than the offset 2 (offset2) plus the threshold of the start condition of the relaxed neighbor cell measurement (e.g., offset2+X), the UE starts the relaxed measurement in the serving cell. The gNB can broadcast offset1 and offset2 for relaxed serving cell measurement in the SIB.

[0033] In various embodiments, the offset value discussed in this embodiment may be a positive value, a negative value, or a zero value.

[0034] Example 2 (Stop Condition)

[0035] The stop conditions for relaxed measurements in the serving cell are as follows:

[0036] If the UE is at the cell edge, the UE can measure the SSB. Therefore, the stop condition for LP-WUS measurement is that the measurement result of LP-WUS is lower than the threshold. When the measurement result of LP-WUS is lower than the threshold, the UE stops the relaxation measurement and starts measuring SSB for each DRX in the serving cell. The gNB can broadcast the threshold for LP-WUS measurement in the SIB.

[0037] If the UE is at the cell edge, the UE can measure the SSB. Therefore, the stop condition for the relaxed measurement is that the relaxed measurement result of the SSB is lower than the threshold. When the measurement result of the SSB is lower than the threshold, the UE stops the relaxed measurement and starts measuring the SSB for each DRX in the serving cell. The gNB can broadcast the threshold for the relaxed measurement in the SIB.

[0038] If the UE is not static or has low mobility, the UE may not be able to perform relaxation measurements in the serving cell. Therefore, the stop condition for the relaxation measurement is that the change in the SSB measurement result is higher than a threshold. When the change in the measurement result of the SSB for a duration is higher than a threshold, the UE stops performing relaxation measurements in the serving cell. The gNB may broadcast the threshold and duration for relaxed serving cell measurements in the SIB.

[0039] If the UE is not static or has low mobility, the UE may not be able to perform relaxation measurements in the serving cell. Therefore, the stop condition for the relaxation measurement is that the change in the LP-WUS measurement result is higher than a threshold. When the change in the measurement result of the SSB for a duration is higher than a threshold, the UE stops performing relaxation measurements in the serving cell. The gNB may broadcast the threshold and duration for relaxed serving cell measurements in the SIB.

[0040] If the relaxation measurement lasts only for a certain duration, the stop condition of the relaxation measurement is that the number of measurements or the time reaches a threshold. When the number of relaxation measurements reaches the threshold, the UE starts measuring the SSB. The gNB may broadcast the threshold for relaxation measurements in the SIB. Alternatively, when the UE starts the relaxation measurement, the UE starts a timer. When the timer runs, the UE performs the relaxation measurement. When the timer does not run, the UE measures the SSB. When the timer expires, the UE starts measuring the SSB.

[0041] If the UE starts neighbor cell measurement, the UE can stop performing relaxed measurement in the serving cell. Therefore, the stop condition of the relaxed measurement is that the measurement result of the SSB is less than the offset plus the threshold of the start condition of the neighbor cell measurement. When the measurement result of the SSB is higher than the threshold (e.g., X), the UE cannot start the neighbor cell measurement. When the measurement result of the SSB is less than the value of the offset plus the threshold of the start condition of the neighbor cell measurement (e.g., offset+X), the UE stops the relaxed measurement in the serving cell. The gNB can broadcast the offset for the relaxed serving cell measurement in the SIB.

[0042] If the UE starts relaxed neighbor cell measurement, the UE may stop performing relaxed measurement in the serving cell. Therefore, the stop condition for the relaxed measurement is that the measurement result of the SSB is less than the offset plus the threshold of the start condition of the relaxed neighbor cell measurement. When the measurement result of the SSB is higher than the threshold (e.g., X), the UE may start relaxed neighbor cell measurement. When the measurement result of the SSB is less than the value of the offset plus the threshold of the start condition of the relaxed neighbor cell measurement (e.g., offset+X), the UE stops the relaxed measurement in the serving cell. The gNB may broadcast the offset for the relaxed serving cell measurement in the SIB.

[0043] Example 3 (Cell Selection)

[0044] It is beneficial for the UE to camp on a cell supporting LP-WUS in order to obtain power saving gain, and therefore, it is beneficial to give priority to cells supporting LP-WUS.

[0045] Possible solutions are discussed below:

[0046] An offset is introduced in the cell reselection criteria. If a cell or frequency supports LP-WUS, the offset is added to the R value for that cell or frequency. The offset can be configured per cell or per frequency. During the cell reselection procedure, if the serving cell or frequency supports LP-WUS or the SIB broadcasts the current offset for the serving cell or frequency, the cell ranking criteria R for the serving cell is s Q is added offset_wus , for example, R s =Q meas,s +Q hyst -Qoffset temp +Q offset_wus If the neighboring cell or frequency supports LP-WUS, or the SIB broadcasts the current offset for the neighboring cell or frequency, the cell ranking criterion R for the neighboring cell n Q is added offset_wus , for example, R n =Q meas,n -Qoffset-Qoffset temp +Q offset_wus .

[0047] Prioritize cells or frequencies that support LP-WUS. During the cell reselection procedure, the UE may prioritize a cell or frequency at most if the cell or frequency supports LP-WUS or SIB broadcast indicates that the cell or frequency can be prioritized.

[0048] Example 4 (Configuration)

[0049] LP-WUS (eg, 101) may be used to indicate whether paging or paging early indication (permanent equipment identifier, PEI) (eg, 102a-b) is transmitted in DRX (eg, 103a-c), such as Figure 1 shown.

[0050] If paging needs to be sent, LP-WUS is sent to wake up the UE to measure SSB, monitor PEI, and monitor paging occasion (PO). If the UE detects LP-WUS, the UE monitors PEI. If PEI indicates a valid PO and a valid group, the UE monitors the valid PO and determines whether to send paging in the PO.

[0051] The configuration of LP-WUS can be determined by the following solutions:

[0052] The time domain of the LP-WUS is determined by the start time of the DRX. The offset may be configured to indicate the interval between the LP-WUS (eg, the end or start of the LP-WUS) and the start time of the DRX.

[0053] The time domain of LP-WUS is determined by the start time of the first PO in DRX. Note that there are multiple POs in DRX, and the first PO is the earliest PO in DRX. The offset can be configured to indicate the interval between the LP-WUS (e.g., the end or start of the LP-WUS) and the start time of the first PO in DRX.

[0054] The time domain of the LP-WUS is determined by the start time of the first PEI (e.g., 102a) in DRX. Note that there are multiple PEIs (e.g., 102a, 102b) in DRX and the first PEI is the earliest PEI in DRX. The offset can be configured to indicate the interval between the LP-WUS (e.g., the end or start of the LP-WUS) and the start time of the first PEI in DRX.

[0055] The LP-WUS periodicity is determined by the DRX cycle or the number of DRX cycles.

[0056] The duration of the LP-WUS may be configured to indicate a possible transmission range of the LP-WUS.

[0057] In the above solutions, the offset, periodicity, and duration are broadcast in the SIB or configured in the RRC message.

[0058] Example 5 (Group LP-WUS)

[0059] The group LP-WUS may be used to indicate whether to send paging for the group UEs in DRX.

[0060] The group of UEs can detect the same LP-WUS. If UEs belonging to the same group are paged, the corresponding LP-WUS is sent. The group LP-WUS is divided based on groups controlled by the core network (CN) or groups based on UE ID. For sub-groups controlled by the CN, the group ID is indicated to the UE via the Non-Access-Stratum (NAS) process. For sub-groups based on UE ID, UEs can be divided into different groups based on UE ID (for example, International Mobile Subscribe Identity (IMSI)). The group used for LP-WUS can reuse the group used for PEI.

[0061] If paging is required, a group LP-WUS is sent to wake up a group of UEs to measure SSB, listen to PEI and listen to PO. If the UE detects LP-WUS, the group of UEs will listen to PEI. If PEI indicates a valid PO, the UE listens to PO and determines whether to send paging for it.

[0062] The group LP-WUS is transmitted in order. For example, the i-th group LP-WUS is transmitted after the (i-1)-th group LP-WUS.

[0063] As disclosed in Embodiment 4, the time domain of the last group LP-WUS is determined by an offset. If the gNB configures an offset and duration for the group LP-WUS, the interval between the end of the i-th group LP-WUS and the start time of DRX or PO or PEI (see Embodiment 4 for details) is (Ii) multiplied by the duration plus the offset, or i multiplied by the duration plus the offset, where I is the total number of group LP-WUS.

[0064] Example 6 (Group LP-WUS)

[0065] The group LP-WUS (eg, 201) may be used to indicate whether paging is sent for a group of UEs having the same PO or for multiple groups of UEs having multiple POs in DRX.

[0066] If paging needs to be sent in DRX, a group LP-WUS (e.g., 201) is sent to wake up a group of UEs (e.g., 203a-c) with the same PO (e.g., 202) to measure SSB, monitor PEI, and monitor PO. If the UE detects a group LP-WUS, a group of UEs monitors PEI. If the PEI indicates a valid PO and a valid group, the UE monitors the PO and determines whether to send paging for it.

[0067] The group LP-WUS may be divided based on the PO number in DRX, and each group LP-WUS corresponds to one PO or multiple POs. If the UE belongs to the same PO or multiple POs, the UE may detect the same LP-WUS.

[0068] For example, if there are X POs in DRX, the total number of group LP-WUS is X, and each LP-WUS corresponds to each PO. If an LP-WUS is sent, the corresponding PO can be sent. In another example, there are X POs in DRX, and the POs are divided into Y groups. In each group, there are X / Y POs. The total number of group LP-WUS is Y, and each LP-WUS corresponds to X / Y POs. Figure 2 As shown, when LP-WUS is sent, the corresponding PO group can be sent.

[0069] Configuration of LP-WUS, where the position in the time domain is determined by the PO.

[0070] The offset can be used to indicate the interval between the end of the group LP-WUS and the start time of the first PO in the group. For example, P POs are a group, and the start time of the first PO is the earliest PO in the group. The first PO associated with the PO of the UE is represented by ((UE_IDmodN)·N S +i S )mod P provides:

[0071] Index (is), which indicates the index of the PO, is determined by: is = floor (UE_ID / N) mod Ns,

[0072] T is determined by the shortest of the UE-specific DRX values,

[0073] N: total number of paging frames in T, and

[0074] Ns: Number of paging calls to PF.

[0075] Example 7 (Group LP-WUS)

[0076] The group LP-WUS (e.g., 301a-b) can be used to indicate whether paging is sent for a group of UEs (e.g., 303a-b) with the same PEI (e.g., 302a) or for multiple groups of UEs (e.g., 303A-b, 303c-d) with multiple PEIs (e.g., 302a, 302b) in DRX.

[0077] If paging needs to be sent in DRX, a group LP-WUS is sent to wake up a group of UEs with the same PEI to measure SSB, monitor PEI, and monitor PO. If the UE detects a group LP-WUS, a group of UEs monitors PEI. If the PEI indicates a valid PO and a valid group, the UE monitors PO and determines whether to send paging for it.

[0078] The group LP-WUS can be divided based on the PEI number in DRX, and each group LP-WUS corresponds to a PEI or multiple PEIs. For example, there are X PEIs in DRX, the total number of group LP-WUS is X, and each LP-WUS corresponds to each PEI, and if the LP-WUS is sent, the corresponding PEI can be sent. In another example, there are X PEIs in DRX, and the PEIs are divided into Y groups. In each group, there are X / Y PEIs. The total number of group LP-WUS is Y, and each LP-WUS corresponds to X / Y PEIs. Figure 3 As shown, if LP-WUS is sent, a corresponding set of PEIs may be sent.

[0079] Configuration of LP-WUS, where the position in the time domain is determined by the PEI.

[0080] The offset can be used to indicate the interval between the end of the WUS and the start time of the first PEI. For example, P PEIs are a group, and the start time of the first PEI is the earliest PEI in the group. The first PEI associated with the PO of the UE is supply

[0081] is the PO number in PEI,

[0082] Index (i_s), which indicates the index of the PO, is determined by: i_s = floor (UE_ID / N) mod Ns, T is determined by the shortest of the UE-specific DRX values,

[0083] N: total number of paging frames in T, and

[0084] Ns: Number of paging calls to PF.

[0085] Example 8 (LP-WUS for US only)

[0086] The gNB may allocate a UE-specific LP-WUS to the UE via an RRC release message.

[0087] In idle / active mode, when the UE receives this LP-WUS, the UE may assume that the NW wants to establish a connection with it, and the UE triggers a random access channel (RACH).

[0088] To ensure that the gNB can release the UE-specific LP-WUS in time, one of the following should happen:

[0089] The gNB configures the verification duration to the UE. When the UE receives the LP-WUS configuration, the UE starts a timer (the length of the timer is the verification duration). When the timer expires, the UE releases the LP-WUS configuration.

[0090] If the UE moves out of the cell in idle / inactive mode, the UE releases the LP-WUS configuration.

[0091] If the UE enters the connected mode, the UE releases the configuration of the LP-WUS.

[0092] When the UE receives using the UE-specific LP-WUS, one of the following actions of the UE occurs:

[0093] In idle mode, PHY indicates an indication to RRC. RRC delivers an indication to the upper layer, and RRC initiates the RRC connection establishment process; the indication may be the reception of UE-specific LP-WUS, or the triggering of MT, or the need to establish a connection with gNB, etc.

[0094] In inactive mode, PHY indicates an indication to RRC, and RRC initiates the RRC connection recovery procedure.

[0095] Example 9 (NES)

[0096] LP-WUS (eg, 401) may be used to indicate a network energy state (NES) transition, such as from a deep state to a micro state, or from a NES state to a normal state in a serving cell.

[0097] Figure 4 An example of network energy status according to LP-WUS is shown.

[0098] When the UE detects LP-WUS (e.g., 401) multiple times in the serving cell, the UE may consider the serving cell to be awake, and the UE may apply the corresponding configuration. The gNB may broadcast or configure multiple configurations, each of which may correspond to a state of the gNB, and in different states of the gNB, the transmission or reception time is different. For example, one configuration #1 corresponds to a normal state of the gNB, and the transmission or reception time is dense. In another example, configuration #2 corresponds to a dormant state of the gNB, and the transmission or reception time is sparse. If the UE detects LP-WUS multiple times in the serving cell, the UE considers the gNB to be in a normal state, and the UE may apply configuration #1.

[0099] When the UE detects LP-WUS and detects dense SSB in the serving cell, the UE may consider that the serving cell has been awakened and the UE may apply the corresponding configuration.

[0100] When the UE fails to detect LP-WUS in the serving cell for multiple times, the UE may consider the serving cell to be in a deep state and the UE may apply the corresponding configuration. For example, if the UE fails to detect LP-WUS in the serving cell for multiple times, the UE considers the gNB to be in a normal state and the UE may apply configuration #2.

[0101] LP-WUS may carry some information about the NES status, including SSB periodicity information indicating the periodicity of SSB transmission, a NES state (e.g., deep state, micro state, NES state, normal state, etc.) change flag indicating that the state of the gNB has changed, and the like.

[0102] Therefore, some preferred embodiments may use the following solutions.

[0103] 1. As Figure 5 A method of wireless communication disclosed in , comprising: receiving, by a wireless communication device, a configuration of a low power wake-up signal (LP-WUS) in a serving cell from a network device (502); determining, by the wireless communication device, reception of a signal according to the configuration of the LP-WUS (504); and wherein the signal includes an LP-WUS, a synchronization signal block (SSB), or a paging message. Additional details and examples are discussed with respect to embodiment 1.

[0104] 2. The method according to solution 1, wherein the wireless communication further includes: determining a condition of a wireless communication device in a serving cell according to the configuration; performing a relaxation measurement in the serving cell; and wherein the relaxation measurement includes an LP-WUS measurement or a synchronization signal block (SSB) measurement.

[0105] 3.
