AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

The internal cavity of double reed whistle instruments, such as the bassoon, is not accurately defined, leading to inconsistent sound production due to variations in reed plate planing and wire clamping force.

Method used

A reed holding and reed forming device made of a shape-retaining material is used to line the inside of the reed plates, providing a consistent and reproducible internal cavity shape, thereby ensuring accurate sound production.

Benefits of technology

The device ensures consistently repeatable sound production by providing a clearly defined internal cavity shape, independent of reed pre-treatment, enhancing the durability and vibration of the reed plates.

Abstract

The subject of the invention: a reed holding and reed forming device for double reed whistle instruments, made of a hard substrate shape-retaining material, e.g. metal. Its internal, shaped design allows and develops good sound production that can be repeated over and over again. The external design helps to ensure good binding of the planed reed plates, thus allowing good vibration of the reed plates and enhancing the durability of the reed plates. It then regulates and transmits the vibration- sound created by the reed plates - into the instrument in a way that is always accurately reproducible and good. Therefore, we make device form metal or from a shape -retaining material in case to which the reed is well attached, the internal shapes always remain unchanged. The invention can be used for all double reed whistle instruments, e.g. bassoon, oboe, English hom, etc., either built in with the associated pipe or separately.

Description

[0001] Reed holding and reed forming device for double reed whistle instruments

[0002] The present invention relates to a reed holding and reed forming device in the field of double reed whistle musical instruments.

[0003] The double reed whistles are currently made for bassoon instruments in the following way: two reed plates, planed to shape, are turned to face each other, then tied into a circle with wires and attached to the corresponding "S" tube part of the instrument. The crucial characteristic of the double reed whistle for sound production is its internal cavity, which is random and depends on the planing and the clamping force of the wires. Therefore, the internal shape of the double reed whistle is not accurate and cannot be reproduced in the most important places for sound production, which is a major disadvantage of these instruments.

[0004] As a consequence, a tool is needed that allows for the accurate design and reproducibility of the internal cavity system of the double reed whistles.

[0005] The invention is described below on the basis of the attached drawing, and in case of the bassoon, an example of an embodiment as a separately constructed piece.

[0006] Figure 1 shows a cross-sectional view of a double reed whistle in side view.

[0007] The reed holding and reed forming device according to the invention is made of a material that retains shape, which can be used to cover the inside of the double reed whistle.

[0008] The reed support and reed forming device according to the invention is based on the realisation that by lining the reed plates from the inside with a solid material which retains the shape, the characteristic deviations resulting from the internal structure of the reed can be eliminated. In this way, reed whistles can be formed from reed which have identical and reproducible sound-producing properties based on their interior.

[0009] Figure 1 shows a cross-sectional representation of a double reed whistle. The reed holding and reed forming device 1 is designed for use with double reed whistle instruments made of a hard, shape-retaining substrate material, such as metal. Its internal, shaped design allows for consistently repeatable good sound production. The external design helps to ensure good binding of the planed reed plates 2, which are facing each other, thus ensuring good vibration of the reed plates 2 and also enhancing the durability of the reed plates 2. The vibration - sound - created by the reed plates 2 is then regulated and transmitted to the instrument in a way that is always precisely repeatable and appropriate. Thus, the reed plates 2, fixed facing each other by reed binding wires 3, with the help of the reed holding and reed forming device 1 attached to their inner surface, give the internal cavity system of the double reed whistle a clearly defined shape, independent of the reed pre-treatment.

[0010] The reed holding and reed forming device 1 is made of metal or other shape-retaining material, to which the reed plates 2 are well bonded, the internal shapes always remaining unchanged. The double reed whistle thus formed is connected to the rest of the instrument by a "S" shaped instrument pipe 4. Of course, we do not exclude the possibility that the instrument pipe 4 is not "S" shaped, because some instruments require a different shape. These instrument pipes 4 connect the double reed whistle to the rest of the instrument. In a preferred embodiment, the reed holding and reed forming device 1 is formed as part of the instrument pipe 4, so that there is no need to connect the said reed holding and reed forming device 1 to the instrument pipe 4.

[0011] The reed plates 2 are prepared in the usual way, cut to size, planed, sanded and fixed in a curved form by means of wires 3, facing each other. The reed holding and reed forming device 1 are then formed and shaped either as part of the instrument pipe 4 or on their own. The reed holding and reed forming device 1 is then fixed to the inside of the reed plates 2 and, if formed as a stand-alone device, is attached to the instrument pipe 4.

[0012] The invention can be used for all double reed whistle instruments, e.g. bassoon, oboe, English horn, etc.

[0013] The advantage of the reed holding and reed forming device is that it ensures accurate and reproducible sound production. List of notations used
