AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Current wireless communication systems, particularly in 5G NR, face challenges in efficiently managing channel state feedback (CSF) for cooperation between multiple reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) nodes, which affects spectral efficiency and data throughput.

Method used

The proposed solution involves a method where a network node transmits reference signals to multiple RIS arrays, each comprising sub-arrays. The wireless device measures these signals to generate channel state feedback (CSF), which is then used to configure each sub-array for optimal data transmission.

Benefits of technology

This approach enhances spectral efficiency and data throughput by determining optimized phase matrix configurations for multiple RIS panels and configuring them based on the CSF, thereby improving communication pathways around blockages.

Description

CHANNEL STATE FEEDBACK TO SUPPORT COOPERATION BETWEEN MULTIPLE RIS NODESTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present disclosure relates generally to communication systems, and more particularly, to communication via multiple beam-shaping reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) .

[0002] INTRODUCTION

[0003] Wireless communication systems are widely deployed to provide various telecommunication services such as telephony, video, data, messaging, and broadcasts. Typical wireless communication systems may employ multiple-access technologies capable of supporting communication with multiple users by sharing available system resources. Examples of such multiple-access technologies include code division multiple access (CDMA) systems, time division multiple access (TDMA) systems, frequency division multiple access (FDMA) systems, orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) systems, single-carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) systems, and time division synchronous code division multiple access (TD-SCDMA) systems.

[0004] These multiple access technologies have been adopted in various telecommunication standards to provide a common protocol that enables different wireless devices to communicate on a municipal, national, regional, and even global level. An example telecommunication standard is 5G New Radio (NR) . 5G NR is part of a continuous mobile broadband evolution promulgated by Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) to meet new requirements associated with latency, reliability, security, scalability (e.g., with Internet of Things (IoT) ) , and other requirements. 5G NR includes services associated with enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) , massive machine type communications (mMTC) , and ultra-reliable low latency communications (URLLC) . Some aspects of 5G NR may be based on the 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard. There exists a need for further improvements in 5G NR technology. These improvements may also be applicable to other multi-access technologies and the telecommunication standards that employ these technologies.

[0032] In some aspects of wireless communication, a communication path (e.g., a line of sight path) from a base station to a UE may be blocked. The effects of the blockage, in some aspects, may be avoided or mitigated by using an array of configurable reflective elements (e.g., a RIS) to reflect a transmitted beam along a path that avoids (or does not include) the blockage. A RIS may further be sub-divided into separately configurable panels that may be used to direct an impinging beam in multiple different directions (e.g., for multiple UEs) or to refine the reflection of an impinging beam in a single direction (e.g., for a single UE) . In some aspects, multiple arrays of configurable reflective elements may each be available to participate in one of multiple potential communication pathways.

[0033] Various aspects relate generally to cooperation between multiple RISs and RIS sub-arrays and / or RIS panels for communication between a network node and a wireless device (e.g., a UE) . Some aspects more specifically relate to a beam measurement procedure for determining a configuration for each panel of multiple (multi-panel) RISs used for a communication between the network node and the wireless device. In some examples, a network node may transmit, in association with a set of arrays of configurable reflective elements (e.g., multiple RISs) each including a plurality of sub-arrays of the configurable reflective elements (e.g., panels of the RISs) , a plurality of reference signals from each antenna port of a set of antenna ports of the network node. In some aspects, each reference signal of the plurality of reference signals may be associated with a corresponding panel of a RIS (e.g., one of the plurality of panels of the multiple RISs) . The network node, in some aspects, may further provide, for the multiple RISs, an additional indication of a state of the plurality of panels (e.g., an ON / OFF state and / or a phase matrix for each panel in an ON state) associated with each reference signal in the plurality of reference signals. The wireless device may receive (and measure) the plurality of reference signals, generate a CSF associated  with a combined channel for the multiple RISs, and transmit the CSF to the network node. The network may receive, from the wireless device, the CSF associated with a combined channel for the set of arrays of configurable reflective elements and provide, based on the CSF, an indication of a configuration for each panel of the plurality of panels for a subsequent communication with between the network node and the base station. The network node may then transmit, and the wireless device may receive a data transmission from the network node via the multiple RISs based on the configuration for each panel of the plurality of panels provided and / or indicated by the network node.

[0034] Particular aspects of the subject matter described in this disclosure can be implemented to realize one or more of the following potential advantages. In some examples, by determining optimized phase matrix configurations for multiple panels of multiple RISs (e.g., determining optimized panel-specific phase matrices) and configuring the multiple panels based on the determined optimized phase matrix configurations, the described techniques can be used to improve spectral efficiency and associated throughput by configuring the multiple panels of multiple RISs with panel-specific phase matrices.

[0035] The detailed description set forth below in connection with the drawings describes various configurations and does not represent the only configurations in which the concepts described herein may be practiced. The detailed description includes specific details for the purpose of providing a thorough understanding of various concepts. However, these concepts may be practiced without these specific details. In some instances, well known structures and components are shown in block diagram form in order to avoid obscuring such concepts.

[0040] Deployment of communication systems, such as 5G NR systems, may be arranged in multiple manners with various components or constituent parts. In a 5G NR system, or network, a network node, a network entity, a mobility element of a network, a radio access network (RAN) node, a core network node, a network element, or a network equipment, such as a base station (BS) , or one or more units (or one or more components) performing base station functionality, may be implemented in an aggregated or disaggregated architecture. For example, a BS (such as a Node B (NB) , evolved NB (eNB) , NR BS, 5G NB, access point (AP) , a transmission reception point (TRP) , or a cell, etc. ) may be implemented as an aggregated base station (also known as a standalone BS or a monolithic BS) or a disaggregated base station.

[0041] An aggregated base station may be configured to utilize a radio protocol stack that is physically or logically integrated within a single RAN node. A disaggregated base station may be configured to utilize a protocol stack that is physically or logically distributed among two or more units (such as one or more central or centralized units  (CUs) , one or more distributed units (DUs) , or one or more radio units (RUs) ) . In some aspects, a CU may be implemented within a RAN node, and one or more DUs may be co-located with the CU, or alternatively, may be geographically or virtually distributed throughout one or multiple other RAN nodes. The DUs may be implemented to communicate with one or more RUs. Each of the CU, DU and RU can be implemented as virtual units, i.e., a virtual central unit (VCU) , a virtual distributed unit (VDU) , or a virtual radio unit (VRU) .

[0042] Base station operation or network design may consider aggregation characteristics of base station functionality. For example, disaggregated base stations may be utilized in an integrated access backhaul (IAB) network, an open radio access network (O-RAN (such as the network configuration sponsored by the O-RAN Alliance) ) , or a virtualized radio access network (vRAN, also known as a cloud radio access network (C-RAN) ) . Disaggregation may include distributing functionality across two or more units at various physical locations, as well as distributing functionality for at least one unit virtually, which can enable flexibility in network design. The various units of the disaggregated base station, or disaggregated RAN architecture, can be configured for wired or wireless communication with at least one other unit.

[0043] FIG. 1 is a diagram 100 illustrating an example of a wireless communications system and an access network. The illustrated wireless communications system includes a disaggregated base station architecture. The disaggregated base station architecture may include one or more CUs 110 that can communicate directly with a core network 120 via a backhaul link, or indirectly with the core network 120 through one or more disaggregated base station units (such as a Near-Real Time (Near-RT) RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) 125 via an E2 link, or a Non-Real Time (Non-RT) RIC 115 associated with a Service Management and Orchestration (SMO) Framework 105, or both) . A CU 110 may communicate with one or more DUs 130 via respective midhaul links, such as an F1 interface. The DUs 130 may communicate with one or more RUs 140 via respective fronthaul links. The RUs 140 may communicate with respective UEs 104 via one or more radio frequency (RF) access links. In some aspects, the network may include a RIS 103 that may reflect beamformed (or beam-focused) communication between the RU 140 and a UE 104 to avoid a blockage 107 that blocks a directional beam between the RU 140 (or an associated base station 102) and the UE 104. A RIS is one example of a name for a passive array that reflects or  refracts communication between a base station and a UE to control an angle of reflection, e.g., without decoding the communication. In other examples, the RIS may be called a meta-surface, a smart surface, or an IRS and may be related to, or incorporate, meta-devices, or meta-materials (e.g., tunable, active, passive, or programmable meta-materials) . The RIS 103 may be associated with a RIS controller 108. Discovery information, such as RIS capability information and / or position information for the RIS 103 may be transmitted by the RIS controller 108, e.g., to a UE 104 via sidelink or to a base station via uplink. In some implementations, the UE 104 may be simultaneously served by multiple RUs 140.

[0044] Each of the units, i.e., the CUs 110, the DUs 130, the RUs 140, as well as the Near-RT RICs 125, the Non-RT RICs 115, and the SMO Framework 105, may include one or more interfaces or be coupled to one or more interfaces configured to receive or to transmit signals, data, or information (collectively, signals) via a wired or wireless transmission medium. Each of the units, or an associated processor or controller providing instructions to the communication interfaces of the units, can be configured to communicate with one or more of the other units via the transmission medium. For example, the units can include a wired interface configured to receive or to transmit signals over a wired transmission medium to one or more of the other units. Additionally, the units can include a wireless interface, which may include a receiver, a transmitter, or a transceiver (such as an RF transceiver) , configured to receive or to transmit signals, or both, over a wireless transmission medium to one or more of the other units.

[0045] In some aspects, the CU 110 may host one or more higher layer control functions. Such control functions can include radio resource control (RRC) , packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) , service data adaptation protocol (SDAP) , or the like. Each control function can be implemented with an interface configured to communicate signals with other control functions hosted by the CU 110. The CU 110 may be configured to handle user plane functionality (i.e., Central Unit –User Plane (CU-UP) ) , control plane functionality (i.e., Central Unit –Control Plane (CU-CP) ) , or a combination thereof. In some implementations, the CU 110 can be logically split into one or more CU-UP units and one or more CU-CP units. The CU-UP unit can communicate bidirectionally with the CU-CP unit via an interface, such as an E1 interface when implemented in an O-RAN configuration. The CU 110 can be  implemented to communicate with the DU 130, as necessary, for network control and signaling.

[0046] The DU 130 may correspond to a logical unit that includes one or more base station functions to control the operation of one or more RUs 140. In some aspects, the DU 130 may host one or more of a radio link control (RLC) layer, a medium access control (MAC) layer, and one or more high physical (PHY) layers (such as modules for forward error correction (FEC) encoding and decoding, scrambling, modulation, demodulation, or the like) depending, at least in part, on a functional split, such as those defined by 3GPP. In some aspects, the DU 130 may further host one or more low PHY layers. Each layer (or module) can be implemented with an interface configured to communicate signals with other layers (and modules) hosted by the DU 130, or with the control functions hosted by the CU 110.

[0047] Lower-layer functionality can be implemented by one or more RUs 140. In some deployments, an RU 140, controlled by a DU 130, may correspond to a logical node that hosts RF processing functions, or low-PHY layer functions (such as performing fast Fourier transform (FFT) , inverse FFT (iFFT) , digital beamforming, physical random access channel (PRACH) extraction and filtering, or the like) , or both, based at least in part on the functional split, such as a lower layer functional split. In such an architecture, the RU (s) 140 can be implemented to handle over the air (OTA) communication with one or more UEs 104. In some implementations, real-time and non-real-time aspects of control and user plane communication with the RU (s) 140 can be controlled by the corresponding DU 130. In some scenarios, this configuration can enable the DU (s) 130 and the CU 110 to be implemented in a cloud-based RAN architecture, such as a vRAN architecture.

[0048] The SMO Framework 105 may be configured to support RAN deployment and provisioning of non-virtualized and virtualized network elements. For non-virtualized network elements, the SMO Framework 105 may be configured to support the deployment of dedicated physical resources for RAN coverage requirements that may be managed via an operations and maintenance interface (such as an O1 interface) . For virtualized network elements, the SMO Framework 105 may be configured to interact with a cloud computing platform (such as an open cloud (O-Cloud) 190) to perform network element life cycle management (such as to instantiate virtualized network elements) via a cloud computing platform interface (such as an O2 interface) .  Such virtualized network elements can include, but are not limited to, CUs 110, DUs 130, RUs 140 and Near-RT RICs 125. In some implementations, the SMO Framework 105 can communicate with a hardware aspect of a 4G RAN, such as an open eNB (O-eNB) 111, via an O1 interface. Additionally, in some implementations, the SMO Framework 105 can communicate directly with one or more RUs 140 via an O1 interface. The SMO Framework 105 also may include a Non-RT RIC 115 configured to support functionality of the SMO Framework 105.

[0049] The Non-RT RIC 115 may be configured to include a logical function that enables non-real-time control and optimization of RAN elements and resources, artificial intelligence (AI)  / machine learning (ML) (AI / ML) workflows including model training and updates, or policy-based guidance of applications / features in the Near-RT RIC 125. The Non-RT RIC 115 may be coupled to or communicate with (such as via an A1 interface) the Near-RT RIC 125. The Near-RT RIC 125 may be configured to include a logical function that enables near-real-time control and optimization of RAN elements and resources via data collection and actions over an interface (such as via an E2 interface) connecting one or more CUs 110, one or more DUs 130, or both, as well as an O-eNB, with the Near-RT RIC 125.

[0050] In some implementations, to generate AI / ML models to be deployed in the Near-RT RIC 125, the Non-RT RIC 115 may receive parameters or external enrichment information from external servers. Such information may be utilized by the Near-RT RIC 125 and may be received at the SMO Framework 105 or the Non-RT RIC 115 from non-network data sources or from network functions. In some examples, the Non-RT RIC 115 or the Near-RT RIC 125 may be configured to tune RAN behavior or performance. For example, the Non-RT RIC 115 may monitor long-term trends and patterns for performance and employ AI / ML models to perform corrective actions through the SMO Framework 105 (such as reconfiguration via O1) or via creation of RAN management policies (such as A1 policies) .

[0051] At least one of the CU 110, the DU 130, and the RU 140 may be referred to as a base station 102. Accordingly, a base station 102 may include one or more of the CU 110, the DU 130, and the RU 140 (each component indicated with dotted lines to signify that each component may or may not be included in the base station 102) . The base station 102 provides an access point to the core network 120 for a UE 104. The base station 102 may include macrocells (high power cellular base station) and / or small  cells (low power cellular base station) . The small cells include femtocells, picocells, and microcells. A network that includes both small cell and macrocells may be known as a heterogeneous network. A heterogeneous network may also include Home Evolved Node Bs (eNBs) (HeNBs) , which may provide service to a restricted group known as a closed subscriber group (CSG) . The communication links between the RUs 140 and the UEs 104 may include uplink (UL) (also referred to as reverse link) transmissions from a UE 104 to an RU 140 and / or downlink (DL) (also referred to as forward link) transmissions from an RU 140 to a UE 104. The communication links may use multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) antenna technology, including spatial multiplexing, beamforming, and / or transmit diversity. The communication links may be through one or more carriers. The base station 102  / UEs 104 may use spectrum up to Y MHz (e.g., 5, 10, 15, 20, 100, 400, etc. MHz) bandwidth per carrier allocated in a carrier aggregation of up to a total of Yx MHz (x component carriers) used for transmission in each direction. The carriers may or may not be adjacent to each other. Allocation of carriers may be asymmetric with respect to DL and UL (e.g., more or fewer carriers may be allocated for DL than for UL) . The component carriers may include a primary component carrier and one or more secondary component carriers. A primary component carrier may be referred to as a primary cell (PCell) and a secondary component carrier may be referred to as a secondary cell (SCell) .

[0052] Certain UEs 104 may communicate with each other using device-to-device (D2D) communication link 158. The D2D communication link 158 may use the DL / UL wireless wide area network (WWAN) spectrum. The D2D communication link 158 may use one or more sidelink channels, such as a physical sidelink broadcast channel (PSBCH) , a physical sidelink discovery channel (PSDCH) , a physical sidelink shared channel (PSSCH) , and a physical sidelink control channel (PSCCH) . D2D communication may be through a variety of wireless D2D communications systems, such as for example, BluetoothTM (Bluetooth is a trademark of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) ) , Wi-FiTM (Wi-Fi is a trademark of the Wi-Fi Alliance) based on the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 standard, LTE, or NR.

[0053] The wireless communications system may further include a Wi-Fi AP 150 in communication with UEs 104 (also referred to as Wi-Fi stations (STAs) ) via communication link 154, e.g., in a 5 GHz unlicensed frequency spectrum or the like.  When communicating in an unlicensed frequency spectrum, the UEs 104  / AP 150 may perform a clear channel assessment (CCA) prior to communicating in order to determine whether the channel is available.

[0054] The electromagnetic spectrum is often subdivided, based on frequency / wavelength, into various classes, bands, channels, etc. In 5G NR, two initial operating bands have been identified as frequency range designations FR1 (410 MHz –7.125 GHz) and FR2 (24.25 GHz –52.6 GHz) . Although a portion of FR1 is greater than 6 GHz, FR1 is often referred to (interchangeably) as a “sub-6 GHz” band in various documents and articles. A similar nomenclature issue sometimes occurs with regard to FR2, which is often referred to (interchangeably) as a “millimeter wave” band in documents and articles, despite being different from the extremely high frequency (EHF) band (30 GHz –300 GHz) which is identified by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) as a “millimeter wave” band.

[0055] The frequencies between FR1 and FR2 are often referred to as mid-band frequencies. Recent 5G NR studies have identified an operating band for these mid-band frequencies as frequency range designation FR3 (7.125 GHz –24.25 GHz) . Frequency bands falling within FR3 may inherit FR1 characteristics and / or FR2 characteristics, and thus may effectively extend features of FR1 and / or FR2 into mid-band frequencies. In addition, higher frequency bands are currently being explored to extend 5G NR operation beyond 52.6 GHz. For example, three higher operating bands have been identified as frequency range designations FR2-2 (52.6 GHz –71 GHz) , FR4 (71 GHz –114.25 GHz) , and FR5 (114.25 GHz –300 GHz) . Each of these higher frequency bands falls within the EHF band.

[0056] With the above aspects in mind, unless specifically stated otherwise, the term “sub-6 GHz” or the like if used herein may broadly represent frequencies that may be less than 6 GHz, may be within FR1, or may include mid-band frequencies. Further, unless specifically stated otherwise, the term “millimeter wave” or the like if used herein may broadly represent frequencies that may include mid-band frequencies, may be within FR2, FR4, FR2-2, and / or FR5, or may be within the EHF band.

[0062] FIG. 2A is a diagram 200 illustrating an example of a first subframe within a 5G NR frame structure. FIG. 2B is a diagram 230 illustrating an example of DL channels within a 5G NR subframe. FIG. 2C is a diagram 250 illustrating an example of a second subframe within a 5G NR frame structure. FIG. 2D is a diagram 280 illustrating an example of UL channels within a 5G NR subframe. The 5G NR frame structure may be frequency division duplexed (FDD) in which for a particular set of subcarriers (carrier system bandwidth) , subframes within the set of subcarriers are dedicated for either DL or UL, or may be time division duplexed (TDD) in which for a particular set of subcarriers (carrier system bandwidth) , subframes within the set of subcarriers are dedicated for both DL and UL. In the examples provided by FIGs. 2A, 2C, the 5G NR frame structure is assumed to be TDD, with subframe 4 being configured with slot format 28 (with mostly DL) , where D is DL, U is UL, and F is flexible for use between DL / UL, and subframe 3 being configured with slot format 1 (with all UL) . While subframes 3, 4 are shown with slot formats 1, 28, respectively, any particular subframe may be configured with any of the various available slot formats 0-61. Slot formats 0, 1 are all DL, UL, respectively. Other slot formats 2-61 include a mix of DL, UL, and flexible symbols. UEs are configured with the slot format (dynamically through DL control information (DCI) , or semi-statically / statically through radio resource control (RRC) signaling) through a received slot format indicator (SFI) . Note that the description infra applies also to a 5G NR frame structure that is TDD.

[0063] FIGs. 2A-2D illustrate a frame structure, and the aspects of the present disclosure may be applicable to other wireless communication technologies, which may have a different frame structure and / or different channels. A frame (10 ms) may be divided into 10 equally sized subframes (1 ms) . Each subframe may include one or more time slots. Subframes may also include mini-slots, which may include 7, 4, or 2 symbols. Each slot may include 14 or 12 symbols, depending on whether the cyclic prefix (CP) is normal or extended. For normal CP, each slot may include 14 symbols, and for extended CP, each slot may include 12 symbols. The symbols on DL may be CP orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) (CP-OFDM) symbols. The symbols on UL may be CP-OFDM symbols (for high throughput scenarios) or discrete Fourier transform (DFT) spread OFDM (DFT-s-OFDM) symbols (for power limited scenarios; limited to a single stream transmission) . The number of slots within a subframe is based on the CP and the numerology. The numerology defines the subcarrier spacing (SCS) (see Table 1) . The symbol length / duration may scale with 1 / SCS.

[0064] Table 1: Numerology, SCS, and CP

[0065] For normal CP (14 symbols / slot) , different numerologies μ 0 to 4 allow for 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16 slots, respectively, per subframe. For extended CP, the numerology 2 allows for 4 slots per subframe. Accordingly, for normal CP and numerology μ, there are 14 symbols / slot and 2μ slots / subframe. The subcarrier spacing may be equal to 2μ*15 kHz, where μ is the numerology 0 to 4. As such, the numerology μ=0 has a subcarrier spacing of 15 kHz and the numerology μ=4 has a subcarrier spacing of 240 kHz. The symbol length / duration is inversely related to the subcarrier spacing. FIGs.  2A-2D provide an example of normal CP with 14 symbols per slot and numerology μ=2 with 4 slots per subframe. The slot duration is 0.25 ms, the subcarrier spacing is 60 kHz, and the symbol duration is approximately 16.67 μs. Within a set of frames, there may be one or more different bandwidth parts (BWPs) (see FIG. 2B) that are frequency division multiplexed. Each BWP may have a particular numerology and CP (normal or extended) .

[0066] A resource grid may be used to represent the frame structure. Each time slot includes a resource block (RB) (also referred to as physical RBs (PRBs) ) that extends 12 consecutive subcarriers. The resource grid is divided into multiple resource elements (REs) . The number of bits carried by each RE depends on the modulation scheme.

[0067] As illustrated in FIG. 2A, some of the REs carry reference (pilot) signals (RS) for the UE.The RS may include demodulation RS (DM-RS) (indicated as R for one particular configuration, but other DM-RS configurations are possible) and channel state information reference signals (CSI-RS) for channel estimation at the UE. The RS may also include beam measurement RS (BRS) , beam refinement RS (BRRS) , and phase tracking RS (PT-RS) .

[0068] FIG. 2B illustrates an example of various DL channels within a subframe of a frame. The physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) carries DCI within one or more control channel elements (CCEs) (e.g., 1, 2, 4, 8, or 16 CCEs) , each CCE including six RE groups (REGs) , each REG including 12 consecutive REs in an OFDM symbol of an RB. A PDCCH within one BWP may be referred to as a control resource set (CORESET) . A UE is configured to monitor PDCCH candidates in a PDCCH search space (e.g., common search space, UE-specific search space) during PDCCH monitoring occasions on the CORESET, where the PDCCH candidates have different DCI formats and different aggregation levels. Additional BWPs may be located at greater and / or lower frequencies across the channel bandwidth. A primary synchronization signal (PSS) may be within symbol 2 of particular subframes of a frame. The PSS is used by a UE 104 to determine subframe / symbol timing and a physical layer identity. A secondary synchronization signal (SSS) may be within symbol 4 of particular subframes of a frame. The SSS is used by a UE to determine a physical layer cell identity group number and radio frame timing. Based on the physical layer identity and the physical layer cell identity group number, the UE can determine a physical cell identifier (PCI) . Based on the PCI, the UE can determine  the locations of the DM-RS. The physical broadcast channel (PBCH) , which carries a master information block (MIB) , may be logically grouped with the PSS and SSS to form a synchronization signal (SS)  / PBCH block (also referred to as SS block (SSB) ) . The MIB provides a number of RBs in the system bandwidth and a system frame number (SFN) . The physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) carries user data, broadcast system information not transmitted through the PBCH such as system information blocks (SIBs) , and paging messages.

[0069] As illustrated in FIG. 2C, some of the REs carry DM-RS (indicated as R for one particular configuration, but other DM-RS configurations are possible) for channel estimation at the base station. The UE may transmit DM-RS for the physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) and DM-RS for the physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) . The PUSCH DM-RS may be transmitted in the first one or two symbols of the PUSCH. The PUCCH DM-RS may be transmitted in different configurations depending on whether short or long PUCCHs are transmitted and depending on the particular PUCCH format used. The UE may transmit sounding reference signals (SRS) . The SRS may be transmitted in the last symbol of a subframe. The SRS may have a comb structure, and a UE may transmit SRS on one of the combs. The SRS may be used by a base station for channel quality estimation to enable frequency-dependent scheduling on the UL.

[0070] FIG. 2D illustrates an example of various UL channels within a subframe of a frame. The PUCCH may be located as indicated in one configuration. The PUCCH carries uplink control information (UCI) , such as scheduling requests, a channel quality indicator (CQI) , a precoding matrix indicator (PMI) , a rank indicator (RI) , and hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) acknowledgment (ACK) (HARQ-ACK) feedback (i.e., one or more HARQ ACK bits indicating one or more ACK and / or negative ACK (NACK) ) . The PUSCH carries data, and may additionally be used to carry a buffer status report (BSR) , a power headroom report (PHR) , and / or UCI.

[0071] FIG. 3 is a block diagram of a base station 310 in communication with a UE 350 in an access network. In the DL, Internet protocol (IP) packets may be provided to a controller / processor 375. The controller / processor 375 implements layer 3 and layer 2 functionality. Layer 3 includes a radio resource control (RRC) layer, and layer 2 includes a service data adaptation protocol (SDAP) layer, a packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) layer, a radio link control (RLC) layer, and a medium access control  (MAC) layer. The controller / processor 375 provides RRC layer functionality associated with broadcasting of system information (e.g., MIB, SIBs) , RRC connection control (e.g., RRC connection paging, RRC connection establishment, RRC connection modification, and RRC connection release) , inter radio access technology (RAT) mobility, and measurement configuration for UE measurement reporting; PDCP layer functionality associated with header compression  / decompression, security (ciphering, deciphering, integrity protection, integrity verification) , and handover support functions; RLC layer functionality associated with the transfer of upper layer packet data units (PDUs) , error correction through ARQ, concatenation, segmentation, and reassembly of RLC service data units (SDUs) , re-segmentation of RLC data PDUs, and reordering of RLC data PDUs; and MAC layer functionality associated with mapping between logical channels and transport channels, multiplexing of MAC SDUs onto transport blocks (TBs) , demultiplexing of MAC SDUs from TBs, scheduling information reporting, error correction through HARQ, priority handling, and logical channel prioritization.

[0072] In some aspects, the base station 310 may correspond to a base station 102, RU 140, or AP 150, and the UE 350 may correspond to a UE 104. In such aspects, communication may be provided between the base station and the UE by a RIS 103, such as described in connection with any of FIG. 1 or FIGs. 4-15. The communication may be intelligently reflected, e.g., by a RIS surface 393 of the RIS 103. Discovery information, such as RIS capability information and / or position information for the RIS 103 may be transmitted by the controller 108, e.g., via sidelink.

[0073] The transmit (TX) processor 316 and the receive (RX) processor 370 implement layer 1 functionality associated with various signal processing functions. Layer 1, which includes a physical (PHY) layer, may include error detection on the transport channels, forward error correction (FEC) coding / decoding of the transport channels, interleaving, rate matching, mapping onto physical channels, modulation / demodulation of physical channels, and MIMO antenna processing. The TX processor 316 handles mapping to signal constellations based on various modulation schemes (e.g., binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) , quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) , M-phase-shift keying (M-PSK) , M-quadrature amplitude modulation (M-QAM) ) . The coded and modulated symbols may then be split into parallel streams. Each stream may then be mapped to an OFDM subcarrier, multiplexed with  a reference signal (e.g., pilot) in the time and / or frequency domain, and then combined together using an Inverse Fast Fourier Transform (IFFT) to produce a physical channel carrying a time domain OFDM symbol stream. The OFDM stream is spatially precoded to produce multiple spatial streams. Channel estimates from a channel estimator 374 may be used to determine the coding and modulation scheme, as well as for spatial processing. The channel estimate may be derived from a reference signal and / or channel condition feedback transmitted by the UE 350. Each spatial stream may then be provided to a different antenna 320 via a separate transmitter 318Tx. Each transmitter 318Tx may modulate a radio frequency (RF) carrier with a respective spatial stream for transmission.

[0074] At the UE 350, each receiver 354Rx receives a signal through its respective antenna 352. Each receiver 354Rx recovers information modulated onto an RF carrier and provides the information to the receive (RX) processor 356. The TX processor 368 and the RX processor 356 implement layer 1 functionality associated with various signal processing functions. The RX processor 356 may perform spatial processing on the information to recover any spatial streams destined for the UE 350. If multiple spatial streams are destined for the UE 350, they may be combined by the RX processor 356 into a single OFDM symbol stream. The RX processor 356 then converts the OFDM symbol stream from the time-domain to the frequency domain using a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) . The frequency domain signal includes a separate OFDM symbol stream for each subcarrier of the OFDM signal. The symbols on each subcarrier, and the reference signal, are recovered and demodulated by determining the most likely signal constellation points transmitted by the base station 310. These soft decisions may be based on channel estimates computed by the channel estimator 358. The soft decisions are then decoded and deinterleaved to recover the data and control signals that were originally transmitted by the base station 310 on the physical channel. The data and control signals are then provided to the controller / processor 359, which implements layer 3 and layer 2 functionality.

[0075] The controller / processor 359 can be associated with at least one memory 360 that stores program codes and data. The at least one memory 360 may be referred to as a computer-readable medium. In the UL, the controller / processor 359 provides demultiplexing between transport and logical channels, packet reassembly, deciphering, header decompression, and control signal processing to recover IP  packets. The controller / processor 359 is also responsible for error detection using an ACK and / or NACK protocol to support HARQ operations.

[0076] Similar to the functionality described in connection with the DL transmission by the base station 310, the controller / processor 359 provides RRC layer functionality associated with system information (e.g., MIB, SIBs) acquisition, RRC connections, and measurement reporting; PDCP layer functionality associated with header compression  / decompression, and security (ciphering, deciphering, integrity protection, integrity verification) ; RLC layer functionality associated with the transfer of upper layer PDUs, error correction through ARQ, concatenation, segmentation, and reassembly of RLC SDUs, re-segmentation of RLC data PDUs, and reordering of RLC data PDUs; and MAC layer functionality associated with mapping between logical channels and transport channels, multiplexing of MAC SDUs onto TBs, demultiplexing of MAC SDUs from TBs, scheduling information reporting, error correction through HARQ, priority handling, and logical channel prioritization.

[0077] Channel estimates derived by a channel estimator 358 from a reference signal or feedback transmitted by the base station 310 may be used by the TX processor 368 to select the appropriate coding and modulation schemes, and to facilitate spatial processing. The spatial streams generated by the TX processor 368 may be provided to different antennas 352 via separate transmitters 354Tx. Each transmitter 354Tx may modulate an RF carrier with a respective spatial stream for transmission.

[0078] The UL transmission is processed at the base station 310 in a manner similar to that described in connection with the receiver function at the UE 350. Each receiver 318Rx receives a signal through its respective antenna 320. Each receiver 318Rx recovers information modulated onto an RF carrier and provides the information to a RX processor 370.

[0079] The controller / processor 375 can be associated with at least one memory 376 that stores program codes and data. The at least one memory 376 may be referred to as a computer-readable medium. In the UL, the controller / processor 375 provides demultiplexing between transport and logical channels, packet reassembly, deciphering, header decompression, control signal processing to recover IP packets. The controller / processor 375 is also responsible for error detection using an ACK and / or NACK protocol to support HARQ operations.

[0080] At least one of the RIS 103 or the RIS controller 108 may be configured to perform aspects in connection with the RIS cooperation component 197 of FIG. 1. At least one of the TX processor 368, the RX processor 356, and the controller / processor 359 may be configured to perform aspects in connection with the RIS cooperation component 198 of FIG. 1. At least one of the TX processor 316, the RX processor 370, and the controller / processor 375 may be configured to perform aspects in connection with the RIS cooperation component 199 of FIG. 1.

[0081] FIG. 4 is a set of diagrams 410 and 420 illustrating a communication between a base station 402 and a UE 404 associated with a blockage 408 without, and with, a RIS 406, in accordance with some aspects of the disclosure. In some aspects, the RIS 406 may include a large number of uniformly distributed electrically controllable elements (e.g., element 405 also referred to as a configurable reflective element or a RIS element) . Each element 405 may have a reconfigurable electromagnetic characteristic, e.g., a reflection coefficient. Depending on the combination of configured states of each element 405, the RIS 406 may reflect and modify the incident radio waveform in a controlled manner (e.g., by changing a reflected direction, changing a beam width, etc. ) . The RIS 406 may function as a near passive device, and the reflection direction may be controlled by the base station. The RIS 406 may reflect an impinging wave in a direction indicated by the base station to a UE.

[0082] A RIS (e.g., the RIS 406) may be deployed in wireless communication systems, including cellular systems, such as LTE, NR, etc. A RIS may alter the channel realization in a controlled manner, which may improve channel diversity. The increased diversity may provide robustness to channel blocking / fading, which may be of particular importance for mmWave communication. Compared to a wireless relay or repeater systems, a RIS may be more cost and energy efficient.

[0083] As illustrated in FIG. 4, a base station 402 may control the RIS 406 to extend beam coverage and / or to address blockages (e.g., blockage 408) between the base station 402 and the UE 404. Diagram 410 illustrates a blockage 408 that blocks the beam 412 from reception at the UE 404. As illustrated in diagram 420, the base station 402 may transmit communication for the UE 404 using a directional beam 432 (which may be referred to as the impinging beam) to the RIS 406 for reflection over a directional beam 436 to the UE 404. The base station 402 may indicate the directional beam 436 to the RIS 406, and the RIS 406 may reflect the impinging wave associated with  directional beam 432 in the direction of the directional beam 436. The RIS 406 may adjust the reflection of the impinging directional beam 432 based on a set of coefficients (e.g., a phase vector or phase matrix) , Θ, indicating a set of configured states (or phases) of the configurable elements (e.g., a state / phase for each element 405) of the RIS 406. The phase matrix, Θ, in some aspects, may be associated with a phase shift (e.g., a time delay introducing a phase shift between 0 and 2π or between -π and π) and / or and an attenuation introduced by each configurable reflective element of the RIS 406.

[0084] FIG. 5 is a diagram 500 illustrating an example in which the RIS 506 includes multiple different subsets 512 of multiple RIS elements 518. As illustrated, different subsets 512 of RIS elements 518 may serve different UEs 504. Accordingly, the different subsets 512 of multiple RIS elements 518 may be configured differently to adjust the reflected direction, the beam width, or other characteristics of the impinging wave 508, and in some aspects, may each be considered as a separate / independent RIS. The RIS elements 518 may be controlled by a controller 525 (including a RIS cooperation component 197 as illustrated in FIG. 1) at the RIS 506 based on control information received by the base station 502. As described in connection with FIG. 4, the base station 502 may indicate a beam direction (e.g., any of beam direction 510a, beam direction 510b, beam direction 510c, beam direction 510d, beam direction 510e, or beam direction 510f) to the RIS 506 for reflecting beamformed communication received as the impinging wave 508 to a particular UE of the different UEs 504 in a particular direction. The RIS may similarly be controlled by a UE for reflecting communication from the UE to a base station and / or to another UE.

[0085] As illustrated in FIG. 4 and further discussed below, the multiple different subsets 512 of multiple RIS elements 518, in some aspects, may be configured differently to adjust the reflected direction, the beam width, or other characteristics of the impinging wave 508 for a single target device (e.g., UE 404 or a particular UE of the different UEs 504) . The different configurations, in some aspect, may be associated with a reference configuration (e.g., a subset and / or sub-array phase matrix) and one or more phase-offset matrices (e.g., a phase offset matrix for each sub-array) to improve the characteristics of the reflected beam (e.g., directional beam 436 or a combined directional beam along one of beam directions 510a to 510f) .

[0086] FIG. 6 is a diagram 600 illustrating elements of an optimization problem associated with a multi-panel RIS 606 used to reflect transmissions from a base station 602 to a UE 604 using multiple panels (e.g., panel 616) in accordance with some aspects of the disclosure. For example, a transmission of a signal “s” (e.g., an Ns × 1 matrix and / or vector associated with data to be transmitted and / or communicated to the UE 604) may have a pre-coding matrix “W” applied (e.g., represented by an Nt × Ns matrix, where Nt is a number of antennas used to transmit the signal) . The signal Ws may be transmitted by base station 602 and may experience a channel represented by a matrix “G” (e.g., an M × Nt matrix, where M is a number of configurable reflective elements associated with the multi-panel RIS 606 used to reflect the transmitted signal Ws) . The matrix G may be decomposed into associated sub-matrices (e.g., corresponding to sub-channels) G1, G2, …Gp, associated with the channel (e.g., the path or sub-channel) between the base station 602 and a particular panel (e.g., panel 616) of the multi-panel RIS 606 where p is the number of panels of the multi-panel RIS 606 and each sub-matrix, Gi is a Q × Nt matrix, where Q is equal to M / p (e.g., the number of configurable reflective elements associated with each panel of the multi-panel RIS 606 assuming equal distribution of configurable reflective elements among the different panels) .

[0087] At the multi-panel RIS 606, the reflection may modify the transmitted signal (e.g., the impinging signal) by applying a phase matrix (e.g., an M × M phase-matrix “Θ” to reflect the transmitted signal) . The phase-matrix Θ, may be decomposed into associated (Q × Q diagonal) sub-matrices, Θi (e.g., corresponding to individual panels) , that, in some aspects, may be equal to diag (θi) , or diag (φiθi) , for i=1, …, p where θi is a Q-tuple phase vector for the ith panel which may be selected from a codebook (and which may be optimized by applying a scalar value φi) . Each of the reflected transmissions may then experience a channel between the multi-panel RIS 606 and the UE 604 represented by the matrix Hr (e.g., an Nr × M matrix, where Nr is a number of antennas used at the UE 604 to receive the transmitted signal) . As for the matrix G, the matrix Hr may be decomposed into associated sub-matrices (e.g., corresponding to sub-channels) Hr, 1, Hr, 2, …, Hr, p, associated with the channel (e.g., the path or sub-channel) between the particular panel (e.g., panel 616) of the multi-panel RIS 606 and the UE 604 and each sub-matrix, Hr, 1 is a Nr × Q matrix.

[0088] A direct transmission from the base station 602 to UE 604 may also be received and experience a channel represented by a Nr × Nt matrix Hd. Accordingly, an optimization problem for optimizing the phase matrix Θ (or the sub-matrices, Θi, θi, or φiθi) , may then be specified under the assumption of a single value decomposition (SVD) precoding at the base station 602 to maximize the Frobenius norm (e.g.,  For a given set of per-panel phase vectors (e.g., Θi) , the optimization problem may be reformulated as maximizing where and In some aspects, C may be equal to [vec (Hr, 1Θ1G1) , …, vec (Hr, pΘpGp) ] (e.g., an NtNr × p composite channel matrix) , hd may be equal to vec (Hd) (e.g., an NtNr-tuple vectorized form of the direct channel matrix Hd) , and φ= [φ1, …φP] T. An iterative algorithm may then be used to calculate, or converge toward, an optimized (e.g., near-optimal) set of per-panel phase values or phase matrices.

[0089] FIG. 7 is a set of diagrams (e.g., diagram 710, diagram 720, diagram 730, diagram 740, and diagram 750) illustrating a set of operations associated with an optimization process for a communication between a base station 702 and a UE 704 via a multi-panel RIS 706 in accordance with some aspects of the disclosure. For example, in some aspects, the base station 702 may configure the multi-panel RIS 706 to have all the panels 716 in an OFF (e.g., a non-reflective) state while transmitting a first RS associated with a direct channel (and an associated matrix Hd) . Additionally, as illustrated in diagram 720-750, the base station 702 may further configure the multi-panel RIS 706 to have a single panel in an ON (e.g., a reflective) state in association with a corresponding set of RSs. For example, each of diagrams 720-750 illustrate that for a corresponding set of RSs, one of the RIS panels (e.g., RIS panel 716 in diagram 730) is in an ON state while the other panels remain in an OFF state. Based on the RSs sent while the multi-panel RIS 706 is in a particular state (e.g., {ON, OFF, OFF, OFF} , …, {OFF, OFF, OFF, ON} ) , the UE may measure a RS associated with a particular channel (e.g., may measure a value associated with Hr, iΘiGi+Hd that may be used to calculate Hr, iΘiGi for i=1, …, p) . Based on the measurements associated with the different configurations of the multi-panel RIS 706 (e.g., different states of the individual panels of the multi-panel RIS 706) , the UE may determine  optimized per-panel phase vectors or phase matrices and / or optimized channel characteristics of the combined channel (e.g., the total channel between the base station 702 and the UE 704 including a direct channel and a set of channels for the corresponding panels of the multi-panel RIS 706) . Based on the determined characteristics, the UE 704 may determine one or more of a rank, a pre-coding matrix (e.g., for application at a base station) , and a set of phase vectors or phase matrices for the panels of the multi-panel RIS 706 associated with an optimized operation of the multi-panel RIS 706 for facilitating communication between the base station 702 and the UE 704.

[0090] FIG. 8 is a diagram 800 illustrating elements of an optimization problem associated with multiple multi-panel RISs (e.g., RIS 806 and RIS 807) used to reflect single-panel transmissions from a base station 802 to a UE 804 around a blockage 808 in accordance with some aspects of the disclosure. In the discussion below both RIS 806 and RIS 807 are assumed to have a same number of panels (or sub-arrays of configurable reflective elements) and a same number of configurable reflective elements associated with the RIS as a whole and each panel and / or sub-array for simplicity with the understanding that different RISs may be configured differently in some aspects. Parallel to the discussion of FIG. 6, a transmission of a signal “s” (e.g., an Ns × 1 matrix and / or vector associated with data to be transmitted and / or communicated to the UE 804) may have a pre-coding matrix “W” for a joint transmission applied (e.g., represented by an Nt × Ns matrix, where Nt is a number of antennas used to transmit the signal) . The signal Ws may be transmitted by base station 802 and may experience a first channel represented by a matrix “G1” associated with a first RIS 806 and a second channel represented by a matrix “G2” associated with a second RIS 807 (e.g., where G1and G2 are M × Nt matrices and M is a number of configurable reflective elements associated with the RIS 806 and RIS 807 used to reflect the transmitted signal Ws) . In some aspects, the concept may be extended from the use of two RISs as described in relation to FIG. 8, to the use of a set of n RISs. Each matrix Gj may be decomposed into associated sub-matrices associated with the channel (e.g., Gj, i, corresponding to different paths or sub-channels) between the base station 802 and an ith panel of a jth RIS, e.g., for j=1, …, n and i=1, …, p where p is the number of panels of a RIS, and each sub-matrix, Gj,i is a Q × Nt matrix, where Q is equal to M / p (e.g., the number of configurable  reflective elements associated with each panel of the RIS assuming equal distribution of configurable reflective elements among the different panels) . For example, G1, 2 may be associated with a second RIS panel 816 (for i=2) of the RIS 806 (for j=1) and G2, 2 may be associated with a second RIS panel 817 (for i=2) of the RIS 807 (for j=2) .

[0091] At a jth RIS, the reflection may modify the transmitted signal (e.g., the impinging signal) by applying a phase matrix (e.g., an M × M phase-matrix “Θj” to reflect the transmitted signal) . The phase-matrix associated with a particular RIS, Θj, may be decomposed into associated (Q × Q diagonal) sub-matrices, Θj, i (e.g., corresponding to individual panels) , that, in some aspects, may be equal to diag (θj, i) , or diag (φj, iθj, i) , for j=1, …, n and i=1, …, p where θj, i is a Q-tuple phase vector for the ith panel of the jth RIS which may be selected from a codebook (and which may be optimized by applying a scalar value φj, i) . Each of the reflected transmissions may then experience a channel between the jth RIS and the UE 804 represented by the matrix  (e.g., an Nr × M matrix, where Nr is a number of antennas used at the UE 804 to receive the transmitted signal) . As for the matrix Gj, the matrix may be decomposed into associated sub-matrices (e.g., corresponding to sub-channels)  for j=1, …, n and i=1, …, p associated with the channel (e.g., the path or sub-channel) between the ith panel of the jth RIS and the UE 804 and each sub-matrix,  is an Nr × Q matrix. A direct transmission from the base station 802 to UE 804 may also be received and experience a channel represented by an Nr × Nt matrix Hd. Accordingly, an optimization problem for optimizing the phase matrices Θj (or the sub-matrices, Θj, i, θj, i, or φj, iθj, i) , may then be specified under the assumption of an SVD precoding at the base station 802 to maximize the Frobenius norm (e.g., ) .

[0092] FIG. 9 is a diagram 900 illustrating elements of an optimization problem associated with multiple multi-panel RISs (e.g., RIS 906 and RIS 907) used to reflect multiple-panel transmissions from a base station 902 to a UE 904 around a blockage 908 in accordance with some aspects of the disclosure. In the discussion below both RIS 906 and RIS 907 are assumed to have a same number of panels (or sub-arrays of configurable reflective elements) and a same number of configurable reflective  elements associated with the RIS as a whole and each panel and / or sub-array for simplicity with the understanding that different RISs may be configured differently in some aspects. In contrast to the discussion of FIG. 6, a transmission of a signal “s” (e.g., an Ns × 1 matrix and / or vector associated with data to be transmitted and / or communicated to the UE 904) may have a pre-coding matrix “WJT” for a joint transmission applied (e.g., represented by an Nt × Ns matrix, where Nt is a number of antennas used to transmit the signal) . The joint transmission, in some aspects, may be one of a coherent joint transmission (CJT) for which the pre-coding matrix, WJt, is configured to produce signals that are in phase (coherent) at a reception point, such as an antenna used to receive the signal at the UE 904. In some aspects, the joint transmission may be a non-coherent joint transmission (NCJT) for which the signals may, or may not, be in phase at a reception point. For example, the joint precoding matrix may be associated with a set of directed transmissions (e.g., based on a set of analog beamformers) from different antenna ports or sets of antenna ports (associated with different panels (or sets of panels) each including a plurality of physical antennas) . Each of the set of directed transmissions may be associated with different spatial transmission filter characteristics applied by different panels of a multi-panel antenna of the base station 902. The signal WJTs 950 (e.g., associated with a first  precoding matrix W1 associated with a first panel, or set of panels, including antennas, a first beam direction 930, and a first RIS 906 and associated with a second precoding matrix W2 associated with a second panel, or set of panels, including antennas, a second beam direction 940, and a second RIS 907) may be transmitted by base station 902 and may experience a first channel represented by a matrix “G1” associated with a first RIS 906 and a second channel represented by a matrix “G2” associated with a second RIS 907 (e.g., where the Gj are matrices and M is a number of configurable reflective elements associated with the RIS 906 and RIS 907 used to reflect the transmitted signal WJTs) . In some aspects, based on the directionality of the different components of the joint transmission, the signals received at the UE 904 may primarily be associated with a signal based on G1W1 and G2W2 (e.g., components of the signal associated with G1W2 and G2W1 may be associated with much lower received power than the signals based on G1W1 and G2W2) . In some aspects, the concept may be extended from the  use of two RISs as described in relation to FIG. 9, to the use of a set of n RISs (and an associated set of n panels, or sets of panels, each applying one of a set of n precoding matrices) . Each matrix Gj may be decomposed into associated sub-matrices associated with the channel (e.g., sub-matrices Gj, i, corresponding to different paths or sub-channels) between the base station 902 and an ith panel of a jth RIS, e.g., for j=1, …, n and i=1, …, p where p is the number of panels of a RIS, and each sub-matrix, Gj, i is a matrix, where Q is equal to M / p (e.g., the number of configurable reflective elements associated with each panel of the RIS assuming equal distribution of configurable reflective elements among the different panels) . For example, G1, 2 may be associated with a second RIS panel 916 (for i=2) of the RIS 906 (for j=1) and G2, 2 may be associated with a second RIS panel 917 (for i=2) of the RIS 907 (for j=2) .

[0093] At a jth RIS, the reflection may modify the transmitted signal (e.g., the impinging signal) by applying a phase matrix (e.g., an M × M phase-matrix “Θj” to reflect the transmitted signal) . The phase-matrix associated with a particular RIS, Θj, may be decomposed into associated (Q × Q diagonal) sub-matrices (e.g., corresponding to individual panels) Θj, i, that, in some aspects, may be equal to diag (θj, i) , or diag (φj, iθj, i) , for j=1, …, n and i=1, …, p where θj, i is a Q-tuple phase vector for the ith panel of the jth RIS which may be selected from a codebook (and which may be optimized by applying a scalar value φj, i) . Each of the reflected transmissions may then experience a channel between the jth RIS and the UE 904 represented by the matrix  (e.g., an Nr × M matrix, where Nr is a number of antennas used at the UE 904 to receive the transmitted signal) . As for the matrix Gj, the matrix may be decomposed into associated sub-matrices (e.g., corresponding to sub-channels)  for j=1, …, n and i=1, …, p associated with the channel (e.g., the path or sub-channel) between the ith panel of the jth RIS and the UE 904 and each sub-matrix,  may be an Nr × Q matrix. A direct transmission from the base station 902 to UE 904 may also be received and experience a channel represented by an Nr × Nt matrix Hd (where Hd may be broken down into components for j=1, …, n for the n pre-coding matrices) .

[0094] The joint transmission may be associated with a set of channel components applied to each of the components of the WJT (e.g., the components Wj) for j=1, …, n and a total channel Accordingly, an optimization problem for optimizing the phase matrices Θj (or the sub-matrices, Θj, i, θj, i, or φj,iθj, i) , may then be specified (after decoupling the different channel components) under the assumption of an SVD precoding at the base station 902 to maximize the Frobenius norm of each channel component separately (e.g., calculating an optimized Θj for each channel component based on

[0096] The functions ascribed to the base station 1002, in some aspects, may be performed by one or more components of a network entity, a network node, or a network device (a single network entity / node / device or a disaggregated network entity / node / device as described above in relation to FIG. 1) . Similarly, the functions ascribed to the UE 1004, in some aspects, may be performed by one or more components of a wireless device supporting communication with a network entity / node / device. Additionally, the functions ascribed to either of the RIS 1006 or the RIS 1007, in some aspects, may be performed by one or more components of a RIS (e.g., a set of configurable  reflective elements or a RIS controller 1001 or a RIS controller 1003, respectively) . Accordingly, references to “transmitting” in the description below may be understood to refer to a first component of the base station 1002 or the UE 1004 outputting (or providing) an indication of the content of the transmission to be transmitted by a different component of the base station 1002 or the UE 1004. Similarly, references to “receiving” in the description below may be understood to refer to a first component of the base station 1002, the UE 1004, the RIS 1006, or the RIS 1007 receiving a transmitted signal and outputting (or providing) the received signal (or information based on the received signal) to a different component of the base station 1002, the UE 1004, the RIS 1006, or the RIS 1007.

[0097] In some aspects, the base station 1002 may transmit, and the RIS 1006 and the RIS 1007 may each receive one or more of, a set of indications 1008 of a configuration of a set of RSs and / or a corresponding set of configurations of the RIS 1006 and / or RIS 1007. The set of indications 1008, in some aspects, may indicate a set of time-and-frequency resources and / or transmission filters (e.g., pre-coding matrices and / or beams) associated with each RS of the set of RSs. In some aspects, the set of indications 1008 may further indicate a RIS configuration for one or more of the RISs (e.g., RIS 1006 or RIS 1007) associated with each RS of the set of RSs for measuring channel characteristics of each channel between the base station 1002 and the UE 1004 via individual panels. In some aspects, each RIS may receive a subset of the set of indications 1008 that are relevant to the particular RIS (e.g., a set of ON / OFF states and / or associated phase matrices or phase values to apply at particular times) .

[0098] For example, the set of indications 1008 may indicate that for a first RS, a first subset of RSs, or a first set of time periods, a corresponding RIS configuration includes turning off panels of a related set of RISs (e.g., RIS 1006 and RIS 1007) except for a first panel of a first RIS (e.g., a first panel of the RIS 1006 being in an ON, or reflective, state, while other panels of the RIS 1006 and the RIS 1007 are in an OFF, or non-reflective state) . The first RS may be measured at the UE 1004 to determine channel characteristics associated with the channel between the base station 1002 and the UE 1004 via the first panel of the first RIS. Similar RS and RIS configuration indications may be provided in the set of indications 1008 for each panel of the related set of RISs.

[0099] The base station 1002 may transmit, and UE 1004 may receive, indication 1010 of the configuration of the set of RSs for measurement. The UE 1004, in some aspects, may not receive an indication of the RIS configurations associated with the indication 1010. In some aspects, the indication 1010 may include an indication that the set of RSs are associated with an optimization process, or operation, associated with a set of RISs and / or the RIS configurations associated with each RS in the set of RSs. In some aspects, the indication 1010 may indicate one or more of a number of RISs and / or RIS panels per RIS, a total number of RIS panels, and / or a known, or configured, RS timing.

[0100] Based on at least one of the set of indications 1008, the RIS 1006 (e.g., a RIS controller) may, at 1012, configure the RIS 1006 (e.g., the configurable reflective elements of the panels of the RIS 1006) for reflecting (or refraining from reflecting) a RS, or a subset of RSs, via at most one panel. Similarly, based on at least one of the set of indications 1008, the RIS 1007 (e.g., a RIS controller) may, at 1014, configure the RIS 1007 (e.g., the configurable reflective elements of the panels of the RIS 1007) for reflecting (or refraining from reflecting) a RS, or a subset of RSs, via at most one panel. For example, configuring the RIS 1006 and the RIS 1007 at 1012 and 1014, respectively, may include configuring the panels to all be in an OFF state to measure a direct channel. Additionally, the UE 1004, based on the indication 1010 may, at 1015, begin to monitor for the RSs indicated in the indication 1010. In some aspects, each RS discussed below may include a plurality of RSs (e.g., multiple RSs associated with a same or different precoding matrix and / or set of panels) .

[0101] A first RS 1016 may be transmitted directly from the base station 1002 to the UE 1004 (e.g., with the panels of the RIS 1006 and the RIS 1007 in an OFF, or non-reflective, state based on configuring the RIS 1006 and the RIS 1007 at 1012 and 1014, respectively) . The UE 1004, in some aspects, may measure, in association with monitoring for the RSs at 1015, the RS 1016 to determine the direct channel characteristics (e.g., Hd) . For the following discussion, each of RIS 1006 and RIS 1007 are assumed to include four panels related to the optimization process, or operation but may include more, or fewer, panels in other aspects that may employ a similar process for separately measuring channel characteristics associated with each panel.

[0102] For a first subset of the RSs related to the panels of the RIS 1006, at a first time 1017, the RIS 1006 and the RIS 1007 may be reconfigured to be in a first configuration associated with a first panel of the RIS 1006 being in an ON state with the other panels of the RIS 1006 and the RIS 1007 being in an OFF state and may reflect a RS 1018 from the base station 1002 to the UE 1004. At a second time 1019, the RIS 1006 and the RIS 1007 may be reconfigured to be in a second configuration associated with a second panel of the RIS 1006 being in an ON state with the other panels of the RIS 1006 and the RIS 1007 being in an OFF state and may reflect a RS 1020 from the base station 1002 to the UE 1004. At a third time 1021, the RIS 1006 and the RIS 1007 may be reconfigured to be in a third configuration associated with a third panel of the RIS 1006 being in an ON state with the other panels of the RIS 1006 and the RIS 1007 being in an OFF state and may reflect a RS 1022 from the base station 1002 to the UE 1004. At a fourth time 1023, the RIS 1006 and the RIS 1007 may be reconfigured to be in a fourth configuration associated with a fourth panel of the RIS 1006 being in an ON state with the other panels of the RIS 1006 and the RIS 1007 being in an OFF state and may reflect a RS 1024 from the base station 1002 to the UE 1004. The UE 1004, in some aspects, may measure, in association with monitoring for the RSs at 1015, the RSs 1018, 1020, 1022, and 1024 to determine the channel characteristics (e.g.,  ) associated with each panel of the RIS 1006 (e.g., for an ith panel of the RIS 1006) .

[0103] For a second subset of the RSs related to the panels of the RIS 1007, at a fifth time 1025, the RIS 1006 and the RIS 1007 may be reconfigured to be in a fifth configuration associated with a first panel of the RIS 1007 being in an ON state with the other panels of the RIS 1006 and the RIS 1007 being in an OFF state and may reflect a RS 1026 from the base station 1002 to the UE 1004. At a sixth time 1027, the RIS 1006 and the RIS 1007 may be reconfigured to be in a sixth configuration associated with a second panel of the RIS 1007 being in an ON state with the other panels of the RIS 1006 and the RIS 1007 being in an OFF state and may reflect a RS 1028 from the base station 1002 to the UE 1004. At a seventh time 1029, the RIS 1006 and the RIS 1007 may be reconfigured to be in a seventh configuration associated with a third panel of the RIS 1007 being in an ON state with the other panels of the RIS 1006 and the RIS 1007 being in an OFF state and may reflect a RS 1030 from the base station 1002 to the UE 1004. At an eighth time 1031, the RIS 1006  and the RIS 1007 may be reconfigured to be in an eighth configuration associated with a fourth panel of the RIS 1007 being in an ON state with the other panels of the RIS 1006 and the RIS 1007 being in an OFF state and may reflect a RS 1032 from the base station 1002 to the UE 1004. The UE 1004, in some aspects, may measure, in association with monitoring for the RSs at 1015, the RSs 1026, 1028, 1030, and 1032 to determine the channel characteristics (e.g.,  ) associated with each panel of the RIS 1007 (e.g., for an ith panel of the RIS 1007) .

[0104] In some aspects using a single panel, or set of panels, (e.g., a single antenna port or set of antenna ports) to transmit RSs or data from the base station 1002, the first subset of the RSs related to the panels of the RIS 1006 and the second subset of the RSs related to the panels of the RIS 1007 may be associated with a same precoding matrix (e.g., W) as described in relation to FIG. 8. In some aspects associated with a joint transmission from multiple panels, or sets of panels, (e.g., multiple antenna ports or sets of antenna ports) of the base station 1002 (e.g., associated with a joint precoding matrix that may be associated with different directed transmissions from different panels, or sets of panels, of the base station 1002) , the first subset of the RSs related to the panels of the RIS 1006, in some aspects, may be associated with a first pre-coding matrix (e.g., W1) and a first panel, or set of panels, of the base station 1002 while the second subset of the RSs related to the panels of the RIS 1007 may be associated with a second pre-coding matrix (e.g., W2) and a second panel, or set of panels, of the base station 1002. While FIG. 10 illustrates that at most one panel is in an ON, or reflective, state for each RS (e.g., for each configuration and / or time period) , in some aspects this may not be the case. For example, if a first pre-coding matrix (e.g., W1) has a directionality associated with the RIS 1006 (e.g., is associated with a first beam in the direction of the RIS 1006) and a second pre-coding matrix (e.g., W2) has a directionality associated with the RIS 1007 (e.g., is associated with a second beam in the direction of the RIS 1007) , an RS associated with each of the first and second pre-coding matrices may be transmitted and reflected by a panel of the RIS 1006 and the RIS 1007, respectively, during a same time period (and based on a same configuration indicating an ON state for one panel of each of the RIS 1006 and the RIS 1007) . In some aspects, this may save time associated with the optimization operation while the amount of interference produced by a “cross-reflection” (e.g., G1W2 and G2W1) may be negligible and / or ignored based on the directionality of  W1 and W2 (e.g., based on an assumption that components of the signal associated with G1W2 and G2W1 may be associated with a significantly lower received power than the signals based on G1W1 and G2W2) . Additionally, for a RIS using a same or overlapping set of panels for reflecting communications associated with multiple UEs, each panel may be in an ON state using a phase matrix associated with a different one of the multiple UEs such that the OFF state illustrated in FIG. 10 for a particular panel, may be relative to the single UE 1004, but may be in an ON state relative to an additional UE (not shown) .

[0105] At 1034, the UE may determine optimized parameters (e.g., parameters optimizing a throughput) for a communication between the base station 1002 and the UE 1004 using both the RIS 1006 and the RIS 1007 (e.g., when implementing RIS cooperation or a cooperative RIS mode of operation) and generate CSF for providing to the base station 1002. Determining the optimized parameters at 1034, in some aspects, may include optimizing phase values (e.g., φj, i) based on one or more vectors determined from the measured RSs (e.g., an NtNr × np vectorized composite channel matrix  and an NtNr-tuple vectorized form of the direct channel matrix hd=vec (Hd) ) as described above in relation to FIG. 6 adjusted based on the number of RISs, RIS panels, and precoding matrices used as described in relation to FIGs. 8 and 9. Based on the optimized phase values, the UE 1004, in some aspects, may further determine a precoding matrix (e.g., an RI and / or PMI) for the base station 1002 and a CQI based on, for example, the composite channel matrix illustrated in FIG. 8. In some aspects, the UE 1004 may, based on the determined optimized parameters, generate information for CSF (e.g., an indication of the optimized phase values, RI, PMI, and / or CQI) at 1034. In some aspects, each of the phase values may be indicated using a limited number of configured, or known, values (e.g., a set of values indicated by a single symbol using QPSK or 8-PSK modulation) .

[0106] For example, based on measuring the RS 1016, 1018, 1020, 1022, 1024, 1026, 1028, 1030, and 1032, the UE 1004 may, at 1034, determine optimized parameters for one or more precoding matrices (e.g., W or W1, …Wn) , and RIS configurations (RIS panel configurations (e.g., φj, iΘj, i) or per-panel phase values (e.g., φj, i) ) . The UE 1004 may further generate the set of information for the CSF at 1034 based on the measurements and the determined optimized parameters. Based on the generated  information for the CSF, the UE 1004 may transmit, and the base station 1002 may receive (e.g., via the RIS 1006 and / or the RIS 1007) , a CSF 1036 including the information for the CSF generated at 1034.

[0107] In some aspects, based on the CSF 1036, the base station 1002 may, at 1038, generate a set of RIS configurations for the set of RISs (e.g., the RIS 1006 and the RIS 1007) or RIS panels participating in the communication between the base station 1002 and the UE 1004. The RIS configurations generated at 1038, in some aspects, may include one of (1) a common phase matrix for each RIS and a set of panel-specific phase value offset values (e.g., indicating a panel-specific difference from, or scalar and / or multiplier applied to, the common phase matrix for the RIS) or (2) a set of panel-specific phase matrices. In some aspects, the phase matrices may be indicated using a set of known phase matrices (e.g., a codebook) that may be related to a particular beam direction or reflection direction, e.g., introducing a known angular offset from a passive reflection or associated with a specific direction and / or shape of a reflected transmission (or beam) .

[0108] The base station 1002, in some aspects, may also, at 1038, determine a precoding matrix (for a single panel or for multiple panels of the base station 1002) based on the CSF 1036. The precoding matrix determined at 1038, in some aspects, may be used for subsequent transmissions from the base station 1002 to the UE 1004. The base station 1002 may then transmit, and one of the RIS 1006 or the RIS 1007 may receive, a RIS configuration in a set of RIS configurations 1040. The RIS 1006 (e.g., a controller associated with RIS 1006) may, based on at least one RIS configuration in the set of RIS configurations 1040, configure the RIS panels of the RIS 1006 at 1042 for the subsequent transmissions from the base station 1002 to the UE 1004. Similarly, the RIS 1007 (e.g., a controller associated with RIS 1007) may, based on at least one RIS configuration in the set of RIS configurations 1040, configure the RIS panels of the RIS 1007 at 1044 for the subsequent transmissions from the base station 1002 to the UE 1004.

[0109] The base station 1002, in some aspects, may transmit a set of data transmissions 1046 for reflection from the RIS 1006 and the RIS 1007. As described in relation to FIGs. 8 and 9, the set of data transmissions 1046 may include a single transmission associated with a single precoding matrix or multiple transmission associated with multiple precoding matrices (e.g., corresponding to the multiple RISs) from multiple panels of  the base station 1002. The set of data transmissions 1046, in some aspects, may be reflected from one or more of the RIS 1006 and the RIS 1007 and may be received by the UE 1004.

[0110] FIG. 11 is a flowchart 1100 of a method of wireless communication. The method may be performed by a base station (e.g., the base station 102, 802, 902, 1002; the network entity 1602, 1702) . In some aspects, the base station may provide, for a set of arrays of configurable reflective elements (e.g., RISs) each including a plurality of sub-arrays (or panels) of the configurable reflective elements, an indication of a state of the plurality of sub-arrays associated with each reference signal in a plurality of reference signals. In some aspects, the plurality of reference signals may include subsets of the plurality of reference signals to be transmitted from each antenna port of a set of antenna ports of the network node. Each reference signal of the plurality of reference signals, in some aspects, may be associated with a corresponding sub-array of the plurality of sub-arrays of the configurable reflective elements. The state of a sub-array indicated by the indication transmitted by the base station, may be one of a reflective (ON) state or a non-reflective (OFF) state. Additionally, or alternatively, the state of a sub-array indicated by the indication transmitted by the base station, may be a set of phase values (e.g., a phase vector or a phase matrix) indicating a phase shift and attenuation applied by each configurable reflective element of the sub-array, where an attenuation value of 0 (or 1) may indicate no reflection (e.g., a non-reflective (OFF) state associated with a maximal attenuation) . In some aspects, the indication of the state of the plurality of sub-arrays associated with each reference signal in the plurality of reference signals indicates up to one sub-array (or panel) in an ON state (e.g., that up to one panel will be in an ON state for each reference signal in the plurality of reference signals) . For example, referring to FIGs. 8-10, base station 1002 (or base station 802 or 902) , may transmit the set of indications 1008 of a configuration of a set of RSs and / or a corresponding set of configurations of the RIS 1006 and / or RIS 1007 associated with the RSs.

[0111] In some aspects, the set of arrays of configurable reflective elements may include two or more arrays of configurable reflective elements. A first array of configurable reflective elements (one of the two or more arrays) of the set of arrays of configurable reflective elements (e.g., the RISs) may include a first plurality of sub-arrays (or panels) . In some aspects, each sub-array of the first plurality of sub-arrays may be  configured to reflect the plurality of reference signals associated with the first plurality of sub-arrays from the network node to a wireless device using a same phase matrix associated with a same beam direction (or a same reflection direction) . The phase matrix, in some aspects, may be a same Q-tuple phase vector (where Q is a number of configurable reflective elements in a corresponding sub-array) associated with a reflection direction and / or beamforming performed by the panel of the RIS. The reflected plurality of reference signals may be associated with a reception at a wireless device (e.g., a UE) .

[0112] A second array of configurable reflective elements (e.g., a second of the two or more arrays) of the set of arrays of configurable reflective elements, in some aspects, may include a second plurality of sub-arrays. In some aspects, at least two sub-arrays of the second plurality of sub-arrays may be configured to reflect the plurality of reference signals associated with the second plurality of sub-arrays from the network node to the wireless device using different phase matrices associated with different beam directions. The different phase matrices, in some aspects, may be different Q-tuple phase vectors (where Q is a number of configurable reflective elements in a corresponding sub-array) associated with a reflection direction and / or beamforming performed by the panel of the RIS. In some aspects, the different phase matrices, in some aspects, may be based on a same Q-tuple phase vector with different offset or scalar values applied. In some aspects, a Q-tuple phase vector, as described above, may be associated with a codebook (e.g., a set of known, or configured, phase vectors that may be indicated via an index or other indicator indicating a member in the set of known, or configured, phase vectors) .

[0113] At 1104, the base station may transmit, in association with the set of arrays of configurable reflective elements, a plurality of reference signals from each antenna port of a set of antenna ports of the network node. For example, 1104 may be performed by transceiver (s) 1746, antenna (s) 1780, and / or RIS cooperation component 199 of FIG. 17. Each reference signal of the plurality of reference signals, in some aspects, may be associated with a corresponding sub-array of the plurality of sub-arrays of the configurable reflective elements. In some aspects, the set of antenna ports may include a single antenna port and / or panel (as in FIG. 8) or multiple antenna ports and / or panels (as in FIG. 9) . In some aspects, each reference signal associated with a corresponding sub-array of a first array of configurable reflective elements of  the set of arrays of configurable reflective elements is further associated with a first precoding matrix, and where each reference signal associated with a corresponding sub-array of a second array of configurable reflective elements of the set of arrays of configurable reflective elements is further associated with a second precoding matrix. For example, referring to FIGs. 8-10, base station 1002 (or base station 802 or 902) , may transmit the first and second subsets of RSs (including RSs 1018, 1020, 1022, 1024, 1026, 1028, 1030, and 1032 associated with the configurations implemented at the times 1017, 1019, 1021, 1023, 1025, 1027, 1029, and 1031, respectively) .

[0114] In some aspects, the base station may transmit, at least one additional reference signal from each of the set of antenna ports of the network node associated with an OFF state of each sub-array in each array of configurable reflective elements of the set of arrays of configurable reflective elements. In some aspects, the set of antenna ports may include a single antenna port and / or panel (as in FIG. 8) or multiple antenna ports and / or panels (as in FIG. 9) . The additional reference signal may be used to determine channel characteristics of one or more direct channels. For example, referring to FIGs. 8-10, base station 1002 (or base station 802 or 902) , may transmit the RS 1016.

[0115] At 1108, the base station may receive, based on the plurality of reference signals, a CSF associated with a combined channel for the set of arrays of configurable reflective elements. For example, 1108 may be performed by transceiver (s) 1746, antenna (s) 1780, and / or RIS cooperation component 199 of FIG. 17. The CSF, in some aspects, may include an additional indication of a set of relative phase values (or phase value offsets) associated with a corresponding subset of the plurality of sub-arrays that is associated with an array of configurable reflective elements in the set of arrays of configurable reflective elements. For example, the subset of the plurality of sub-arrays, in some aspects, may include all of the plurality of sub-arrays. In some aspects, a first sub-array of each array of configurable reflective elements (e.g., each RIS) may be associated with a first set of phase values (e.g., a Q-tuple) while the remaining sub-arrays may be associated with a corresponding set of relative phase values (or phase value offsets from the first set of phase values) . The CSF, in some aspects, may include one or more of an RI, a PMI, or a CQI. In some aspects, the CSF further includes an additional RI and an additional PMI associated with a joint transmission (e.g., a related second transmission such as for a CJT or NCJT) from one of the set of antenna ports of the network node or a set of antenna port groups  corresponding to the set of arrays of configurable reflective elements. For example, if the plurality of reference signals includes a first set of reference signals associated with a first panel of the base station and a second set of reference signals associated with a second panel of the base station, the CSF may include at least one of a first RI, a first PMI, and a first CQI associated with the first panel of the base station and at least one of a second RI, a second PMI, and a second CQI associated with a second panel of the base station. For example, referring to FIGs. 8-10, base station 1002 (or base station 802 or 902) , may receive the CSF 1036.

[0116] At 1110, the base station may provide, based on the CSF, an indication of a configuration for each sub-array of the plurality of sub-arrays. For example, 1110 may be performed by CU processor (s) 1712, DU processor (s) 1732, RU processor (s) 1742, transceiver (s) 1746, antenna (s) 1780, and / or RIS cooperation component 199 of FIG. 17. The configuration, in some aspects, may include an indication of a phase matrix to be applied at each of the plurality of sub-arrays. The indication may include an indication of a known, or configured, phase matrix (or phase vector) and one or more of a scalar or set of offset values applied to the known, or configured, phase matrix. For example, referring to FIGs. 8-10, base station 1002 (or base station 802 or 902) , may provide the set of RIS configurations 1040 indicating a set of phase matrices for panels of the RIS 1006 and the RIS 1007.

[0124] At 1210, the base station may provide, based on the CSF, an indication of a configuration for each sub-array of the plurality of sub-arrays. For example, 1210 may be performed by CU processor (s) 1712, DU processor (s) 1732, RU processor (s) 1742, transceiver (s) 1746, antenna (s) 1780, and / or RIS cooperation component 199 of FIG.

[0125] At 1212, the base station may transmit, for a wireless device and via the set of arrays of configurable reflective elements, a data transmission using a precoding matrix based on the CSF. For example, 1212 may be performed by transceiver (s) 1746, antenna (s) 1780, and / or RIS cooperation component 199 of FIG. 17. In some aspects, each array of configurable reflective elements of the set of arrays of configurable reflective elements is a RIS and each sub-array is an independently controllable panel of a RIS of the set of arrays of configurable reflective elements. The wireless device, in some aspects, may be a UE, and the base station may be a network node. For example, referring to FIGs. 8-10, base station 1002 (or base station 802 or 902) , may transmit the set of data transmissions 1046.

[0126] FIG. 13 is a flowchart 1300 of a method of wireless communication. The method may be performed by a UE as an example of a wireless device (e.g., the UE 104, 804, 904, 1004; the apparatus 1604) . In some aspects, the UE may receive, in association with a set of arrays of configurable reflective elements (e.g., RISs) each including a plurality of sub-arrays (or panels) of the configurable reflective elements, an indication of a state of the plurality of sub-arrays associated with each reference signal in a plurality of reference signals. In some aspects, the plurality of reference signals may include subsets of the plurality of reference signals to be received from each  antenna port of a set of antenna ports of the network node. Each reference signal of the plurality of reference signals, in some aspects, may be associated with a corresponding sub-array of the plurality of sub-arrays of the configurable reflective elements. The state of a sub-array indicated by the indication received by the UE, may be one of a reflective (ON) state or a non-reflective (OFF) state. Additionally, or alternatively, the state of a sub-array indicated by the indication received by the UE, may be a set of phase values (or a phase matrix) indicating a phase shift and attenuation applied by each configurable reflective element of the sub-array, where an attenuation value of 0 (or 1) may indicate no reflection (e.g., a non-reflective (OFF) state associated with a maximal attenuation) . 8-10, UE 1004 (or UE 804 or 904) , may receive the indication 1010 of the configuration of the set of RSs for measurement, where the indication 1010 may include an indication that the set of RSs are associated with an optimization process, or operation, associated with a set of RISs (e.g., the RIS 1006 and the RIS 1007) and / or the RIS configurations associated with each RS in the set of RSs.

[0127] In some aspects, the set of arrays of configurable reflective elements may include two or more arrays of configurable reflective elements. A first array of configurable reflective elements (one of the two or more arrays) of the set of arrays of configurable reflective elements (e.g., the RISs) may include a first plurality of sub-arrays (or panels) . In some aspects, each sub-array of the first plurality of sub-arrays may be configured to reflect the plurality of reference signals associated with the first plurality of sub-arrays from the network node to the UE using a same phase matrix associated with a same beam direction (or a same reflection direction) .

[0128] A second array of configurable reflective elements (e.g., a second of the two or more arrays) of the set of arrays of configurable reflective elements, in some aspects, may include a second plurality of sub-arrays. In some aspects, at least two sub-arrays of the second plurality of sub-arrays may be configured to reflect the plurality of reference signals associated with the second plurality of sub-arrays from the network node to the UE using different phase matrices associated with different beam directions.

[0129] At 1304, the UE may receive, from a network node via the set of arrays of configurable reflective elements including the plurality of sub-arrays of the configurable reflective elements, a plurality of reference signals from each antenna port of a set of antenna ports of the network node. For example, 1304 may be performed by transceiver (s) 1622, antenna (s) 1680, and / or RIS cooperation component 198 of FIG. 16. 8-10, UE 1004 (or UE 804 or 904) , may receive the first and second subsets of RSs (including RSs 1018, 1020, 1022, 1024, 1026, 1028,  1030, and 1032 associated with the configurations implemented at the times 1017, 1019, 1021, 1023, 1025, 1027, 1029, and 1031, respectively) .

[0130] In some aspects, the UE may receive, at least one additional reference signal from each of the set of antenna ports of the network node associated with an OFF state of each sub-array in each array of configurable reflective elements of the set of arrays of configurable reflective elements. 8-10, UE 1004 (or UE 804 or 904) , may receive the RS 1016.

[0131] In some aspects, the UE may determine a CSF associated with a combined channel based on the plurality of reference signals and the indication of the state of the plurality of sub-arrays associated with each reference signal in the plurality of reference signals. In some aspects, determining the CSF may be based on the plurality of reference signals received at 1304. The plurality of reference signals, in some aspects, may be used to determine the CSF as described in relation to FIGs. 8-10. For example, referring to FIGs. 8-10, UE 1004 (or UE 804 or 904) , may determine, at 1034, optimized parameters (e.g., parameters optimizing a throughput) for a communication between the base station 1002 and the UE 1004 using both the RIS 1006 and the RIS 1007 (e.g., when implementing RIS cooperation or a cooperative RIS mode of operation) and generate CSF for providing to the base station 1002.

[0132] At 1308, the UE may transmit, based on the plurality of reference signals, the CSF associated with the combined channel for the set of arrays of configurable reflective elements. For example, 1308 may be performed by transceiver (s) 1622, antenna (s) 1680, and / or RIS cooperation component 198 of FIG. 16. The CSF, in some aspects, may include an additional indication of a set of relative phase values associated with a corresponding subset of the plurality of sub-arrays that is associated with an array of configurable reflective elements in the set of arrays of configurable reflective elements. For example, the subset of the plurality of sub-arrays, in some aspects, may include all of the plurality of sub-arrays. In some aspects, a first sub-array of each array of configurable reflective elements (e.g., each RIS) may be associated with a first set of phase values (e.g., a Q-tuple) while the remaining sub-arrays may be associated with a corresponding set of relative phase values. The CSF, in some  aspects, may include one or more of an RI, a PMI, or a CQI. In some aspects, the CSF further includes an additional RI and an additional PMI associated with a joint transmission (e.g., a related second transmission) from one of the set of antenna ports of the network node or a set of antenna port groups corresponding to the set of arrays of configurable reflective elements. 8-10, UE 1004 (or UE 804 or 904) , may transmit the CSF 1036.

[0133] In some aspects, a base station may provide, based on the CSF, an indication of a configuration for each sub-array of the plurality of sub-arrays. 8-10, the base station 1002 (or the base station 802 or 902) , may provide the set of RIS configurations 1040 indicating a set of phase matrices for panels of the RIS 1006 and the RIS 1007.

[0134] At 1310, the UE may receive, based on the CSF, a data transmission from the network node via the set of arrays of configurable reflective elements. For example, 1310 may be performed by transceiver (s) 1622, antenna (s) 1680, and / or RIS cooperation component 198 of FIG. 16. In some aspects, each array of configurable reflective elements of the set of arrays of configurable reflective elements is a RIS and each sub-array is an independently controllable panel of a RIS of the set of arrays of configurable reflective elements. The terms UE and wireless device or base station and network node may be used interchangeably in the above discussion. For example, referring to FIGs. 8-10, UE 1004 (or UE 804 or 904) , may receive the set of data transmissions 1046.

[0135] FIG. 14 is a flowchart 1400 of a method of wireless communication. The method may be performed by a UE as an example of a wireless device (e.g., the UE 104, 804, 904, 1004; the apparatus 1604) . At 1402, the UE may receive, in association with a set of  arrays of configurable reflective elements (e.g., RISs) each including a plurality of sub-arrays (or panels) of the configurable reflective elements, an indication of a state of the plurality of sub-arrays associated with each reference signal in a plurality of reference signals. For example, 1402 may be performed by application processor (s) 1606, cellular baseband processor (s) 1624, transceiver (s) 1622, antenna (s) 1680, and / or RIS cooperation component 198 of FIG. 16. The state of a sub-array indicated by the indication received by the UE at 1402, may be one of a reflective (ON) state or a non-reflective (OFF) state.

[0136] In some aspects, the set of arrays of configurable reflective elements may include two or more arrays of configurable reflective elements.

[0137] A second array of configurable reflective elements (e.g., a second of the two or more arrays) of the set of arrays of configurable reflective elements, in some aspects, may include a second plurality of sub-arrays. In some aspects, at least two sub-arrays of the second plurality of sub-arrays may be configured to reflect the plurality of reference signals associated with the second plurality of sub-arrays from the network node to the UE using different phase matrices associated with different beam directions.

[0138] At 1404, the UE may receive, from a network node via the set of arrays of configurable reflective elements including the plurality of sub-arrays of the configurable reflective elements, a plurality of reference signals from each antenna port of a set of antenna ports of the network node. For example, 1404 may be performed by transceiver (s) 1622, antenna (s) 1680, and / or RIS cooperation component 198 of FIG. 16.

[0139] In some aspects, the UE may receive, at least one additional reference signal from each of the set of antenna ports of the network node associated with an OFF state of each sub-array in each array of configurable reflective elements of the set of arrays of configurable reflective elements. 8-10, UE 1004 (or UE 804 or 904) , may receive the RS 1016.

[0140] At 1406, the UE may determine a CSF associated with a combined channel based on the plurality of reference signals and the indication of the state of the plurality of sub-arrays associated with each reference signal in the plurality of reference signals. For example, 1406 may be performed by application processor (s) 1606, cellular baseband processor (s) 1624, transceiver (s) 1622, antenna (s) 1680, and / or RIS cooperation component 198 of FIG. 16. In some aspects, determining the CSF may be based on the plurality of reference signals received at 1404. The plurality of reference signals, in some aspects, may be used to determine the CSF at 1406 as described in relation to FIGs.

[0141] At 1408, the UE may transmit, based on the plurality of reference signals, the CSF associated with the combined channel for the set of arrays of configurable reflective elements. For example, 1408 may be performed by transceiver (s) 1622, antenna (s) 1680, and / or RIS cooperation component 198 of FIG. 8-10, UE 1004 (or UE 804 or 904) , may transmit the CSF 1036.

[0142] In some aspects, a base station may provide, based on the CSF, an indication of a configuration for each sub-array of the plurality of sub-arrays. 8-10, the base station 1002 (or the base station 802 or 902) , may provide the set of RIS configurations 1040 indicating a set of phase matrices for panels of the RIS 1006 and the RIS 1007.

[0143] At 1410, the UE may receive, based on the CSF, a data transmission from the network node via the set of arrays of configurable reflective elements. For example, 1410 may be performed by transceiver (s) 1622, antenna (s) 1680, and / or RIS cooperation component 198 of FIG. 16. In some aspects, each array of configurable reflective elements of the set of arrays of configurable reflective elements is a RIS and each sub- array is an independently controllable panel of a RIS of the set of arrays of configurable reflective elements. The terms UE and wireless device or base station and network node may be used interchangeably in the above discussion. For example, referring to FIGs. 8-10, UE 1004 (or UE 804 or 904) , may receive the set of data transmissions 1046.

[0155] In some aspects of wireless communication, a communication path (e.g., a line of sight path) from a base station to a UE may be blocked. The effects of the blockage, in some aspects, may be avoided or mitigated by using an array of configurable reflective elements (e.g., a RIS) to reflect a transmitted beam along a path that avoids (or does on include) the blockage.

[0156] Various aspects relate generally to cooperation between multiple RISs and RIS sub-arrays and / or RIS panels for communication between a network node and a wireless device (e.g., a UE) . Some aspects more specifically relate to a beam measurement procedure for determining a configuration for each panel of multiple RISs used for a communication between the network node and the wireless device. The wireless device may receive (and measure) the plurality of reference signals, generate a CSF associated with a combined channel for the multiple RISs, and transmit the CSF the network node. The network may receive, the CSF associated with a combined channel for the set of arrays of configurable reflective elements and provide, based on the CSF, an indication of a configuration for each panel of the plurality of panels for a subsequent communication with between the network node and the base station. The network node may then transmit, and the wireless device may receive a data transmission from the network node via the multiple RISs based on the configuration for each panel of the plurality of panels provided and / or indicated by the network node.

[0157] The present disclosure proposes techniques for CSI-RS and CSF to support coherent joint transmission (CJT) from two or more RIS nodes reflecting the transmissions from a gNB transmitter. The present disclosure specifically proposes CSF schemes for cooperation of multiple RIS nodes.

[0158] Particular aspects of the subject matter described in this disclosure can be implemented to realize one or more of the following potential advantages.
