AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing PUF-based authentication solutions are primarily online, requiring network access and a server-side CRP library, which is not feasible for many consumer devices without network connectivity, such as smart toothbrush accessories.

Method used

The method involves storing a plurality of challenge response pairs (CRPs) on the NFC tag itself, allowing offline authentication by a master device. The master device encrypts a challenge with a secret key, which is decrypted by the NFC tag to generate a response, verified by the master device for authentication.

Benefits of technology

This approach enables secure offline PUF authentication of NFC tags without the need for network access, enhancing security and simplifying the authentication process for devices without online capabilities.

Abstract

Proposed concepts thus aim to provide schemes, solutions, concept, designs, methods and systems pertaining to offline physical unclonable function, PUF, authentication of an NFC tag by a master device. In particular, embodiments aim to provide a method for offline PUF authentication of an NFC tag by a master device by storing a plurality of challenge response pairs, CRPs, on the NFC tag itself so that connection to a server storing CRPs is not required. In order to increase the security of this method, the master device also encrypts the challenge of a CRP selected from the stored plurality before communicating the encrypted challenge to the NFC tag. The NFC tag then needs to decrypt the encrypted challenge using the same secret key to be able to provide the correct response such that the master device can authenticate it.
