Abstract
Claims
1. A composition for reducing pain, treating depression, treating major depressive disorder, and / or treating seasonal affective disorder, comprising pentadecanoic acid (C15:0) or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
2. The composition according to claim 1, further comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
3. The composition according to claim 1, wherein the composition is in unit dosage form.
4. The composition according to claim 1, wherein the composition is in the form of a nutritional supplement.
5. The composition according to claim 4, wherein the nutritional supplement is in a unit dosage form.
6. The composition according to claim 4, wherein the nutritional supplement is in a form adapted to be combined with or added to food, beverage, or other nutritional supplements.
7. The composition according to claim 3, wherein the composition is a food component.
8. The composition according to claim 1, wherein the composition is adapted to increase the serum, plasma, or erythrocyte membrane concentration of a C15:0 fatty acid or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof to a concentration greater than 2.2 μM and less than 30 μM.
9. The composition according to claim 3, wherein the unit dosage form comprises 0.01 mg to 10,000 mg of a C15:0 fatty acid or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
10. The composition according to claim 9, wherein the unit dosage form comprises 100 mg to 200 mg of a C15:0 fatty acid or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
11. The composition according to claim 1, wherein the composition substantially does not contain even-chain saturated fatty acids.
12. The composition according to claim 1, wherein the composition substantially does not contain polyunsaturated fatty acids.
13. The composition according to any one of claims 1 to 12, wherein the composition substantially does not contain C17:0 fatty acids.
14. The composition according to any one of claims 1 to 13, wherein the C15:0 fatty acid or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof is adapted to be administered to a patient in need at a dose of 0.2 mg to 20 mg per kg of body weight per day.
15. The composition according to claim 3, wherein the unit dosage form is adapted to be administered to a patient once daily.
16. The composition according to any one of claims 1 to 15, which is formulated for oral administration.
