Description

[Technical field]

[0001] The present invention relates to the field of wireless communication systems or networks, and more particularly to communication between a user device such as a UE and one or more network entities such as a base station or a receiving user device, where the UE is a multi-connection UE sharing a transmitter / receiver chain with two or more connections.

[0002] FIG. 1 illustrates a core network 102 and one or more radio access networks RAN1, RAN2, ...RAN N 1(b) is a schematic diagram of an example of a terrestrial wireless network 100 including one or more base stations gNB1 to gNB5, each of which may serve a particular area surrounding the base station, represented generally by a respective cell 1061 to 1065. nFIG. 1 is a schematic diagram of an example of a wireless communication system. A base station is provided to serve users in a cell. It should be noted that the base station may also operate multiple, i.e., two or more, cells (not shown in FIG. 1), and when the base station operates multiple cells, adjacent cells may include cells operated by the same base station and / or cells operated by different base stations, i.e., adjacent cells may also be different cells of the same base station or different cells of the same base station. One or more base stations may serve users in licensed and / or unlicensed bands. The term base station, BS, refers to gNB in 5G networks, eNB in UMTS / LTE / LTE-A / LTE-A Pro, or BS in just any other mobile communication standard. A user may be a fixed or mobile device. The wireless communication system may also be accessed by mobile or fixed IoT devices that connect to the base station or the user. Mobile or IoT devices may include physical devices, ground vehicles such as robots and cars, aircraft such as manned or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) (the latter also refers to drones), buildings, and other items or devices that incorporate electronics, software, sensors, actuators, etc., and network connections that enable these devices to collect and exchange data across an existing network infrastructure. Figure 1(b) shows an example diagram of five cells, but the RAN n may contain more or less such cells, and the RAN nmay also include only one base station. Fig. 1(b) shows two users UE1 and UE2, also called user equipment, UE, in a cell 1062 and served by a base station gNB2. Another user UE3 is shown in a cell 1064 served by a base station gNB4. Arrows 1081, 1082 and 1083 represent diagrammatically the uplink / downlink connections for transmitting data from users UE1, UE2 and UE3 to the base stations gNB2, gNB4 or from the base stations gNB2, gNB4 to users UE1, UE2, UE3. This may be realized in licensed or unlicensed bands. Furthermore, Fig. 1(b) shows two IoT devices 1101 and 1102 in the cell 1064, which may be fixed or mobile devices. The IoT device 1101 accesses the wireless communication system via the base station gNB4 to transmit and receive data as diagrammatically represented by the arrow 1121. The IoT device 1102 accesses the wireless communication system via a user UE3, as represented diagrammatically by the arrow 1122. Each base station gNB1 to gNB5 may be connected to the core network 102, for example, via the S1 interface, via respective backhaul links 1141 to 1145, which are represented diagrammatically by the arrow pointing to "core" in FIG. 1(b). The core network 102 may be connected to one or more external networks. Furthermore, some or all of the respective base stations gNB1 to gNB5 may be connected to each other, for example, via the NR S1 or X2 or XN interfaces, via respective backhaul links 1161 to 1165, which are represented diagrammatically by the arrow pointing to "gNB" in FIG. 1(b).

[0003] A physical resource grid may be used for data transmission. The physical resource grid may include a set of resource elements onto which various physical channels and physical signals are mapped. For example, the physical channels may include physical downlink, uplink, and sidelink shared channels (PDSCH, PUSCH, PSSCH) carrying user-specific data, also referred to as downlink, uplink, and sidelink payload data, a physical broadcast channel (PBCH) carrying, for example, a master information block (MIB) and a system information block (SIB), and physical downlink, uplink, and sidelink control channels (PDCCH, PUCCH, PSCCH) carrying, for example, downlink control information (DCI), uplink control information (UCI), and sidelink control information (SCI). For the uplink, the physical channels may further include a physical random access channel (PRACH or RACH) used by the UE to access the network after the UE synchronizes and acquires the MIB and SIB. The physical signals may include reference signals or symbols (RS), synchronization signals, etc. The resource grid may include a frame or radio frame with a specific duration in the time domain and a given bandwidth in the frequency domain. A frame may have a specific number of subframes of a predefined length, such as 1 ms. Each subframe may include one or more slots of 12 or 14 OFDM symbols depending on the length of the cyclic prefix (CP). A frame may also consist of a small number of OFDM symbols, for example when utilizing a reduced transmission time interval (sTTI), or a minislot / non-slot based frame structure consisting of only a small number of OFDM symbols.

[0004] The wireless communication system may be any single-tone or multi-carrier system using frequency division multiplexing, such as an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system, an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDMA) system, or any other IFFT-based signal with or without CP, such as DFT-s-OFDM. Other waveforms may be used, such as non-orthogonal waveforms for multiple access, such as Filter Bank Multi-Carrier (FBMC), Generalized Frequency Division Multiplexing (GFDM), or Universal Filter Multi-Carrier (UFMC). The wireless communication system may operate, for example, according to the LTE-Advanced pro standard or the 5G or NR, New Radio standard, or the NU-U, New Radio unlicensed standard.

[0005] The wireless network or communication system shown in FIG. 1 may be a heterogeneous network of separate overlaid networks, for example a network of macro cells with each macro cell comprising a macro base station, such as base stations gNB1 to gNB5, and a network of small cell base stations (not shown in FIG. 1), such as femto or pico base stations.

[0006] In addition to the above-mentioned terrestrial wireless networks, there are also non-terrestrial wireless communication networks, including space-borne transceivers, such as satellites, and / or airborne transceivers, such as unmanned aerial systems. The non-terrestrial wireless communication networks or systems may operate in a similar manner to the terrestrial systems described above with reference to FIG. 1, for example according to the LTE-Advanced Pro standard or the 5G or NR, new radio standard.

[0007] In a mobile communication system or network as described above with reference to FIG. 1, e.g., an LTE or 5G / NR network, each entity may communicate using multiple frequency bands, also referred to as wideband operation. In wideband operation, e.g., a base station, gNB, and / or a user device, UE, may transmit in multiple sub-bands. The sub-bands may have different bandwidths or the same bandwidth, such as 20 MHz. Some or all of the sub-bands may be unlicensed bands. To communicate in unlicensed bands, the gNB and UE perform listen-before-talk LBT separately for each unlicensed sub-band, which may result in a situation where one or more of the sub-bands used for wideband operation, also referred to as a subset of the sub-bands, are busy or occupied by transmissions or interference by one or more other public land mobile networks, PLMNs, or one or more other communication systems coexisting in the same frequency band, e.g., systems operating according to the IEEE 802.11 standard.

[0008] Please note that the information in the above sections is intended only to enhance understanding of the background of the invention and, therefore, may contain information that does not constitute prior art already known to those skilled in the art.

[0009] Starting from the prior art as described above, there may be a need for an improvement in multi-connection communications between user devices and respective network entities that share two or more of the connections and RF chains. Next, embodiments of the present invention will be described in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings. [Brief description of the drawings]

[0010] [Figure 1] 1 shows a schematic diagram of an example wireless communication system; [Diagram 2] 1 is a schematic diagram of a wireless communication system including a transmitter, such as a base station, and one or more receivers, such as user devices, UEs. [Figure 7] 13 is a flow chart illustrating an embodiment in which a pending expiration timer is used. [Figure 8] 1 illustrates an example of a computer system in which units or modules, as well as steps of the methods described according to the inventive approach, may be implemented. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

[0011] Embodiments of the present invention will now be described in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which like or similar elements are assigned the same reference symbols.

[0012] In a wireless communication system or network such as the one described above with reference to FIG. 1, one or more of the mobile users, i.e., UEs, may be so-called multi-connection mobile users or multi-connection UEs. A multi-connection UE may include one or more transmitter (Tx) / receiver (Rx) chains, also called radio frequency, RF, transceiver chains. A multi-connection UE shares an RF transceiver chain with two or more connections, which may be called independent connections or shared connections, such that at a particular time, only one of the connections has access to the RF transceiver chain. In other words, at a certain time, the UE is connected to a network entity with a current one of the connections that share the RF transceiver chain, which may be a base station in case of communication over the Uu interface, or another UE in case of sidelink communication, e.g., using a PC5 interface. The current connection may also be referred to as being in a connected state. The other connections that share the RF transceiver chain with the current connection are in a state in which they do not have an active connection to the network entity, but the other connections may perform one or more operations at each operation opportunity. The network entity may be a different network entity than the network entity with which the current connection communicates. For example, when considering a wireless communication system, some of the base stations may operate according to a first standard, such as the GSM or LTE standard, while other base stations may operate according to another standard, such as the NR standard. Thus, a multi-connection UE may have a first connection to a GSM network via a common RF transceiver chain, and a second connection to an NR network, such that when the UE is connected via its current connection to the GSM network, this connection is in a connected state, but the second connection to the NR system is not active, e.g., in an idle state or in an inactive state or in a DRX cycle. Each network entity is not necessarily associated with a different standard, rather, the network entities may employ the same standard, e.g., a UE may have two independent connections to two different network entities of the same network, such as an NR network, and the entities may be operated by the same or different mobile network operators (MNOs).

[0013] Thus, in the scenario described above, the current connection is in a connected state, also called the RRC connected state. In this state, the transfer of data between the UE and the network is possible. An RRC context is established. Also, a core network connection is established and network controlled mobility is enabled. Meanwhile, the other connection is in an inactive state, e.g., idle, also called the RRC idle state. In this state, no data transfer is possible, there is no RRC context and there is no core network connection. But device controlled mobility is enabled. According to the NR approach, a new RRC state is introduced, which is called the RRC inactive state. This state may be considered to be between the RRC idle and RRC connected states, as known from the LTE standard. The RRC inactive state allows the UE to receive certain control messages and to transmit a limited set of control messages, in order to make it easier for the UE to track the UE moving in the cell, for example in the case of a vehicular UE, also called V-UE. Thus, a connection of a UE that shares an RF transceiver chain with another connection and is in an inactive state may also be in an inactive state, similar to the RRC inactive state just described above. During the RRC inactive state, data transfer is not possible, but the RRC context as well as the core network connection are established and device controlled mobility is also enabled. Additionally, an inactive connection may be in a DRX state where the UE is RRC connected but does not receive any data from the network for the duration of the DRX cycle.

[0014] A multi-connection UE may provide identification of connections to one or more wireless communication systems or entities. For example, each connection that shares the UE's RF transceiver chain may be identified by one or more subscriber identity modules, SIM cards, within the UE, with each SIM card associated with one of the connections. A connection may also be identified by one or more of the following: one or more Universal Subscriber Identity Modules, USIM cards, each USIM card being associated with one of the connections; one or more universal integrated circuit cards, ICCs, each ICC associated with one of the connections; one or more embedded subscriber identity modules, eSIMs, each eSIM associated with one of the connections; one or more certificates, each associated with one of the connections, one or more pairs of usernames and passwords, each pair associated with one of the connections; one or more International Mobile Station Equipment Identifiers (IMEIs), each associated with one of the connections; · One or more Mobile Equipment Identifiers (MEIDs), each associated with one of the connections.

[0015] Thus, considering a multi-connection UE as described above, each connection sharing an RF transceiver chain associated with a respective identifier can be viewed from the network's perspective as a separate UE being served by a respective network entity. The connections may be associated with the same or different network operators.

[0016] In a multi-connection UE as described above, certain operations can be performed at certain occasions, also referred to as certain instances in time, via each connection that shares an RF transceiver chain. However, sharing an RF transceiver chain between one or more connections can result in a situation where a service for the UE can only be provided using a connection, thereby making the UE unreachable using other connections. Thus, operations can only be performed using a current connection at a certain occasion, and no other operations can be performed over a non-current connection that is in an inactive state. Thus, operations for a non-current connection can be overlooked by the UE. On the other hand, in the case of an implementation where the other connection becomes active on the occasion where the respective operation is performed, this results in a service interruption of the current connection to the network entity that currently provides services to the UE via the current connection.

[0017] The above operations may include various different operations to be performed between the UE and the network at different times. For example, the operations may include one or more of the following: reading a system information MIB / SIB broadcast; receiving RAN-based notification area (RNA) updates; reading a paging channel during a paging opportunity PO; reading a PDCCH monitoring opportunity MO; receiving or transmitting according to semi-persistent scheduling (SPS); Sending in the configured grant CG; performing a measurement, e.g. an SMTC or DMTC or mobility measurement; performing a random access RACH; transmitting on a scheduled grant PUSCH; - transmitting any control information, for example via a PUCCH; receiving scheduled data, a PDCCH or a PDSCH;

[0018] · Transmitting on the sidelink interface using any sidelink physical channel, e.g. PSSCH / PSCCH / PSFCH, via PC5.

[0019] With reference to reading the paging channel during a paging opportunity PO, we will now discuss some issues regarding the respective operations occurring at a particular opportunity in different shared connections, one of which is in a connected state while the others are in an idle or inactive state. Paging is a process in which an idle mode UE periodically wakes up based on a DRX, discontinuous reception, cycle to read the paging channel during a paging opportunity. If the UE finds relevant information on the paging channel, it transitions to a connected mode. If not, the UE continues to monitor subsequent paging opportunities PO. This function is supported by the UE, and in the case of a multi-connection UE, all connections need to monitor their respective paging channels. A first issue in a multi-connection UE, having a single RF transceiver chain or sharing one of its RF transceiver chains between at least two connections, is that the need for each connection to monitor its respective paging channel can result in overlaps in paging opportunities, which can result in delays or loss of data on either connection. In other words, at least some of the connections may be associated with simultaneous or overlapping paging occasions such that when connected over a current connection to read the paging channel, paging information in another paging channel for a substantially simultaneous non-current connection is not read by the UE and is lost. Thus, data may be lost because the other connection is not aware that data is transmitted over this connection, or there may be at least a delay in receiving the data until the paging channel can be read by the other connection.

[0020] Another issue with multi-connection UEs is the service interruption mentioned above. For example, considering a current connection to a network entity in an RRC connected state, the UE may suddenly tune away from the network entity to which it is currently connected and through which it is currently served if the other connections are also required to monitor their paging occasions or to monitor system information. Tuning away may include the UE connecting to another network entity using another one of the shared connections to perform paging or system information updates using another one of the connections that shares the multi-connection UE's RF transceiver chain with the current connection. This may cause service interruption on the current connection and in turn unexpected behavior in the network.

[0021] In other words, when an operation is to be performed at a particular operation time for another one of the connections other than the current connection, the UE tunes away from the current connection to become active or connected to another network entity via the other connection to enable the operation opportunity or time to perform the particular operation, which may also be referred to as the UE temporarily tuning away from the current connection and returning to the current connection after completing the operation for the other connection.

[0022] The interruption of the service may result in undesirable error situations in the network entities due to the time that the UE is serving a service or operation using another one of the non-current connections, which traditionally results in instances of error in the serving network entity since the serving network entity is not aware of the UE's procedures and the type of operation using the other connection. Thus, the network entity may continue to schedule resources for a connection to a connection that was temporarily interrupted due to the tune-away. This results in a waste of resources that cannot be used for connections to other UEs in the radio system. It may also result in unexpected behavior since the current connection may exclude some control information, e.g., PUCCH, and / or data transmissions, e.g., PUSCH, from the UE. For example, if the UE does not transmit a PUCCH, the HARQ state of the previous transmission remains unknown. In a worst-case scenario, the gNB may erroneously detect a PUCCH transmission with HARQ feedback and interpret a false acknowledgement for the previous transmission.

[0023] As mentioned above, the above problems may occur not only when the connections sharing the RF transceiver chain read the paging channel of the respective system or network to which they are connected, but also for the operations outlined above that require one or more other connections in an idle or inactive state to connect to an entity serving the UE via the respective connection to obtain information or data. In other words, a situation in which a particular operation at a particular occasion needs to be performed on different connections sharing the RF transceiver chain in the UE may result in a situation in which the respective occasions overlap, resulting in only one of the connections being able to receive information and / or leading to a service interruption of the current operation. The present invention addresses the problems discussed above and provides improvements and enhancements for the operation of a multi-connected UE in one or more wireless communication systems or networks.

[0024] An embodiment of the present invention may be implemented in a wireless communication system as shown in Figure 1, including a base station and users, such as mobile terminals or IoT devices. Figure 2 shows a transmitter 300, such as a base station, and one or more receivers 3021 to 3022, such as user devices, UEs. n 3 is a schematic diagram of a wireless communication system including a transmitter 300 and a receiver 302. The transmitter 300 and the receiver 302 can communicate over one or more wireless communication links or channels 304a, 304b, 304c, such as radio links. The transmitter 300 includes one or more antennas ANT T 3, or an antenna array having multiple antenna elements, a signal processor 300a, and a transceiver 300b. R or an antenna array having multiple antennas, signal processors 302a1, 302a n , and transceivers 302b1, 302b n The base station 300 and the UE 302 may communicate via respective first wireless communication links 304a and 304b, such as wireless links using a Uu interface, while the UEs 302 may communicate with each other via a second wireless communication link 304c, such as a wireless link using a PC5 interface. When the UEs are not served by the base station, when the UEs are not connected to the base station, e.g., when the UEs are not in an RRC connected state, or more generally, when no SL resource allocation configuration or assistance is provided by the base station, the UEs may communicate with each other via a sidelink. The system, one or more UEs 302, and the base station 300 may operate in accordance with the teachings of the present invention as described herein.

[0046] According to an embodiment (see e.g. claim 22), in response to an indication that operation on another connection to which the UE has been tuned away will take more time, e.g. more than a predetermined length of time, the UE may indicate that the tune away duration is longer than a tune away duration defined for the TAS, e.g. signalling a long tune away signal, long TAS, to a network entity of the current connection, e.g. when an indication is given to tune away, or signalling a TAS update to a network entity of the current connection, for example when an indication is given at some time while the UE is tuned away. This notifies the network entity of the current connection.

[0047] According to an embodiment (see, for example, claim 23), the fact that the operation takes more time is achieved by: receiving a call at a paging occasion PO, receiving an indication that the data is to be received; The method includes one or more of the steps of receiving an indication that a high priority action is to be performed.

[0048] According to an embodiment (see, for example, claim 24), the connections are in the same state or in different states, the states being e.g. RRC_CONNECTED state, RRC_INACTIVE state, and Contains one or more IDLE states.

[0049] According to an embodiment (see eg claim 25), when tuning away the current connection transitions to RRC_INACTIVE state. The present invention provides a network entity for a wireless communication system (see, for example, claim 26), comprising: the network entity is connected to a UE in a wireless communication system, the UE sharing at least one of its transceiver chains with at least two connections to one or more wireless communication systems, the UE performing one or more operations on the connections at each operation opportunity, the UE transmitting to and receiving from the network entity in a current one of the connections; The network entity receives a tune away signal TAS from the UE, which indicates to the network entity that the UE is tuned away from operations on a current connection served by the network entity in order to perform operations on another connection served by another network entity.

[0050] The present invention provides a network entity for a wireless communication system (see, for example, claim 27), the network entity is connected to a UE in a wireless communication system, the UE sharing at least one of its transceiver chains with at least two connections to one or more wireless communication systems, the UE performing one or more operations on the connections at each operation opportunity, the UE transmitting to and receiving from the network entity in a current one of the connections; The network entity is aware of one or more action opportunities associated with one or more or all of its other connections; and Using knowledge of one or more action opportunities, the network entity determining that the UE tunes away from operations for a current connection served by the network entity to perform operations for another connection served by another network entity; · Start a timer or put a current connection on hold to avoid an error condition in the network entity.

[0051] The present invention provides a network entity for a wireless communication system (see, for example, claim 28), the network entity is connected to a UE in a wireless communication system, the UE sharing at least one of its transceiver chains with at least two connections to one or more wireless communication systems, the UE performing one or more operations on the connections at each operation opportunity, the UE transmitting to and receiving from the network entity in a current one of the connections; The network entity is for receiving one or more tune-away signals, TAS, from the UE, the TAS indicating to the network entity that the UE is to tune away from operation on a current connection served by the network entity and perform operation on another connection served by another network entity; In response to the TAS, the network entity may start a timer or put current connections on hold to avoid an error condition in the network entity.

[0052] According to an embodiment (see, for example, claim 29), the range of the timer includes times longer than the switching time between connections and times to perform operations such as data processing times.

[0053] According to an embodiment (see e.g. claim 30), the length of the timer depends on one or more of the UE capabilities and the time required to perform one or more operations such as cell selection / reselection, paging, system information and tracking / routing area update, SPS transmission, CG transmission, measurement, etc.

[0054] According to an embodiment (see, for example, claim 31), the network entity does not schedule any data for the current connection for the length of the timer.

[0056] According to an embodiment (see, for example, claim 33), the network entity starts a timer and puts the current connection on hold, and the network entity keeps the current connection on hold for the duration of the timer.

[0057] According to an embodiment (see, for example, claim 34), upon expiration of the timer: The network entity continues to schedule to the current connection and expects configured UL transmissions from the current connection, such as PUCCH and CG, or the network entity may receive a signal from the UE that the UE has returned from a tune-away state, e.g. a tune-away signal, and in response to the signal the network entity may continue scheduling to the current connection, or The network entity will start a further timer that defines the period during which the network entity will maintain the context of the current connection.

[0058] According to an embodiment (see, for example, claim 35), upon expiry of the timer, the network entity is intended to start a further timer which defines the period during which the network entity maintains the context of the current connection.

[0059] According to an embodiment (see, for example, claim 36), upon expiry of the further timer the network entity declares a radio link failure RLF and continues the RLF recovery procedure.

[0060] According to an embodiment (see for example claim 37), the network entity receives information from the UE that the tune away duration is longer than a tune away duration defined for the TAS, e.g. For example, if an indication is given when tuning away, a long tune away signal, a long TAS, or For example, if an indication is given at some point while the UE is tuned away, a TAS update It is.

[0061] According to an embodiment (see, for example, claim 38), in response to a long tune away signal or a TAS update in the timer: If the network entity only starts the timer, the network entity shall stop the timer; If the network entity only puts the current connection on hold, it removes the hold; If the network entity starts a timer to put the current connection on hold, it stops the timer to remove the hold state, In response to a long tune away signal or a TAS update within the further timer, the network entity shall stop the further timer and remove the pending state.

[0062] According to an embodiment (see e.g. claim 39), in response to a TAS, in case of predefined circumstances, e.g. delivery of an important message by the network entity via the current connection, the network entity informs the UE that the tune away is to be postponed, e.g. by signalling a delta timer to the UE, or in response to a long tune away signal or a TAS update, in case of predefined circumstances, e.g. delivery of an important message by the network entity via the current connection, the network entity informs the UE that the tune away extension is to be postponed, e.g. by signalling a delta timer to the UE.

[0063] According to an embodiment (see eg claim 40), when tuning away the current connection transitions to RRC_INACTIVE state.

[0064] According to an embodiment (see, for example, claim 41), the connections are in the same state or in different states, the states being e.g. RRC_CONNECTED state, RRC_INACTIVE state, and Contains one or more IDLE states.

[0072] Computer Program Products The invention provides a computer program product comprising instructions which, when executed by a computer, cause the computer to carry out one or more methods according to the invention.

[0073] Thus, embodiments of the present invention provide improvements and enhancements to the operation of a multi-connection user device, i.e., a UE, in one or more wireless communication systems. An embodiment of the present invention provides a user device, such as a UE, for one or more wireless communication systems, having one or more transceiver chains and sharing at least one transceiver chain with at least two connections, also called shared connections, to the one or more wireless communication systems. The UE may use the shared connection to connect to one or more network entities, such as a gNB via a Uu interface, or to one or more other UEs via a sidelink interface, such as one or more UEs in D2D, V2X, V2V scenarios. In the shared connection, one or more operations may be performed by the UE at each operation opportunity. When the UE transmits or receives on a current one of the shared connections, the UE does not transmit or receive on the other shared connections. In other words, the UE operates to utilize the shared connections that are kept in a state that allows it to perform the respective operation in a particular case, according to an embodiment of the present invention.

[0074] This is advantageous as it does not require disconnecting or severing a shared connection on which the UE is not transmitting / receiving, thereby avoiding the need to perform a full attachment procedure in the event of an action being performed on the shared connection.

[0075] According to an embodiment, the UE may be configured or pre-configured by a network entity, or by the network, or by another UE, to use the shared connections as described above, e.g. to keep some or all of the shared connections, i.e. even those that the UE is not currently transmitting / receiving, in a state that allows them to perform the respective operations in a particular case. According to an embodiment, the UE may be configured in this way by an application running on the UE or an over-the-top (OTT). For example, a network entity or a network or a higher layer manager may enable the use of the shared connections, e.g. a particular combination of sharing may be enabled. For example, in one country, multi-SIM or multi-operation capabilities may be allowed with three shared connections to the same or different operators, while in another country five shared connections may be allowed.

[0076] Keeping some or all of the shared connections in a state that allows the respective operations to be performed in a particular case may include keeping some or all of the shared connections that the UE is not currently transmitting or receiving from in one of the following states: RRC_CONNECTED, RRC_INACTIVE, and IDLE. It should be noted that some or all of the shared connections may be maintained or kept in the same state or different states.

[0077] Several aspects of the inventive technique will now be described in more detail, with it being noted that each aspect described below may be used individually or in combination.

[0078] Aspect 1 According to an embodiment of the first aspect of the present invention, one or more wireless communication systems are provided with information regarding respective action opportunities, e.g., respective instances in time when a particular action should be performed over two or more connections shared by an RF transceiver chain of a multi-connection UE. The information regarding respective opportunities where a particular action is connected over two or more connections sharing an RF transceiver chain may be used to inform a network entity where the UE transmits / receives on a current connection about instances where the UE is unavailable to the network entity on the current connection. Additionally or alternatively, the information may be used by the network entity to avoid collisions or overlaps or contentions between one or more or all action opportunities related to the current connection and respective action opportunities related to the remaining connections.

[0079] According to an embodiment, the UE may signal to a network entity information regarding one or more action opportunities associated with one or more or all of the other connections that the UE transmits / receives on the current connection. According to another embodiment, the UE may signal an indication that action opportunities in one or some or all connections are derivable, for example by one or more network entities, in addition to the above embodiment. For example, the indication may include a device identifier that is unique for each UE in the wireless communication system and associated with an identification of the connection to indicate that the UE provides at least two connections, and / or identification information of one or more or all connections to indicate that the UE provides at least two connections.

[0080] An embodiment of the first aspect of the invention will now be described in more detail with reference to reading a paging channel during a paging occasion, although one skilled in the art will readily appreciate that the embodiment described below is equally applicable to other operations such as those outlined above. Furthermore, in the following description of an embodiment of the first aspect of the invention, it is assumed that a multi-connection UE identifies each connection sharing a common RF transceiver chain by its respective SIM card. However, the approach of the present invention is not limited to such an embodiment, and rather, one skilled in the art will readily appreciate that each connection may be identified by any of the above identification information, for example, an eSIM, a certificate, or a username and password pair.

[0081] FIG. 3 illustrates an embodiment of a multi-connection UE 300 that uses respective SIM cards SIM A and SIM B to identify each connection. Thus, the multi-connection UE 300 may also be referred to as a multi-SIM UE. Although the multi-SIM UE 300 of FIG. 3 is assumed to include a single RF chain or RF transceiver chain 300b, according to other embodiments, the multi-SIM UE 300 may include two or more RF transceiver chains. In the embodiment of FIG. 3, it is assumed that the RF transceiver chain 300b is shared between two connections identified by SIM card A and SIM card B, respectively. As shown diagrammatically at 306, the multi-SIM UE 300 selects one of the connections SIM A or SIM B connected to the RF transceiver chain 300b to transmit / receive on one of the connections via an antenna ANT connected to the RF transceiver chain. As mentioned above, the antenna may be a single antenna or the UE may include multiple antennas or antenna arrays.

[0082] To address the above-mentioned problem of overlapping operating opportunities, e.g., overlapping paging opportunities, according to an embodiment of the first aspect, paging information of all connections is provided to the network. The multi-SIM UE 300 is aware of paging opportunities related to a first connection SIM A and a second connection SIM B. In the embodiment of FIG. 3, the first connection SIM A is currently connected to the RF transceiver chain 300b for transmitting to and receiving from the network. The connection SIM A is also referred to below as the current connection, i.e., the connection in which the UE is currently transmitting to and receiving from the network entity. The connection SIM B, which shares the RF transceiver chain with the connection SIM A, is not active, e.g., in an idle or inactive or RRC connected state, and is referred to below as the other connection, i.e., the connection in which the UE is not currently transmitting / receiving to and from the network entity. The multi-SIM UE can connect to a first network entity 308 using the first connection SIM A and to a second network entity 310 using the second connection SIM B. The network entities 308, 310 may be base stations or, in the case of sidelink communications, different user devices. It is further assumed that the network entities 308, 310 belong to different mobile network operators. The network entity 308 belongs to MNO A, while the network entity 310 belongs to MNO B.

[0083] In the embodiment shown in FIG. 3, the multi-SIM UE 300 is transmitting / receiving to / from the network entity 308 using the current connection SIM A, as shown generally at 312. The multi-SIM UE 300 being aware of the paging opportunities of all connections can signal the paging information of all other connections to the network entity 308. Through the active connection 312, the UE 300 signals the paging information of the other connection SIM B, also referred to as the paging information of SIM card B, to the network entity 308, as shown generally at 314. In addition, when connecting to the network entity 308 using the current connection SIM A, for example by UE capability signaling, the paging information of the current connection SIM A is also provided to the network entity 308, so that the network entity 308 already knows the paging information of SIM card A. Thus, the network entity 308 has signal information regarding all connections sharing the RF transceiver chain 300b of the multi-SIM UE 300. The network entity 308 can use the information of each connection to calculate or recalculate the paging occasions of the currently connected SIM A to avoid any overlap, collision, or conflict with paging occasions associated with the other connected SIM B.

[0084] The same procedure can be adopted if the current connection is the second connection SIM B. More specifically, in this case, the network entity 310 may already be aware of the paging information of SIM card B that may be received when connecting to the network entity 310, for example, via the UE's capability information. The UE may also transmit the paging information of SIM card A to the network entity 310, thereby enabling the network entity 310 to calculate / recalculate the PO of the second connection SIM B, which is the current connection in this scenario, and avoid any collision, overlap, or contention with paging opportunities related to the other connection SIM A.

[0085] In the embodiment described above with reference to Fig. 3, it was assumed that the UE 300 provided the paging information for the currently connected SIM card to the network entity when connecting to the network entity, e.g. using the UE capability information, and that the paging information of the other connection SIM B is provided to the entity 308 at some other time. However, according to other embodiments, the UE 300 may signal the paging information of the other connection, such as the paging information of the SIM card B, together with the paging information of the current connection SIM A as part of the UE capability information when connecting to the network entity via the current connection. Thus, the signaling at 312 in Fig. 3 may according to an embodiment be the signaling after the UE 300 has connected to the network entity 308 via the current connection to signal the paging information of the other connection, whereas according to other embodiments at 312 the UE capability may be transmitted including, in addition to the paging information of the current connection SIM A, all paging opportunities of the other connection, such as the connection SIM B.

[0086] According to a further embodiment, the UE may include a device identifier, which is transmitted to a network entity, for example at 312 in Fig. 3, the device identifier being unique for each UE in the wireless communication system. The device identifier may further be associated with an identification of the connection, thereby indicating that the UE 300 provides at least two connections SIM A and SIM B. In other words, when the UE indicates, for example, its multi-SIM capability, a device identifier is transmitted as well, which is unique for each device, but remains the same between different SIM cards of the same device, so as to allow the network entity to match two or more SIM cards, for example when they are provided by different mobile network operators.

[0087] According to yet another embodiment, the UE can transmit the above-mentioned identification information of one or more or all of the other connections, for example of the connection SIM B, to indicate that the UE has at least two connections. In other words, instead of transmitting the ID of the device that allows the network to match the two connections appearing to the network as two different UEs, in order to adjust the respective operating opportunities such as PO accordingly, the UE can transmit a UE-ID that is used for the other SIM card or only for the one of the same network operator.

[0088] Thus, the information or indication may inform one or more network entities of instances in which the UE is not available to the network entities or enable one or more network entities to avoid collisions or overlaps or conflicts between one or more or all operation opportunities associated with the current connection and operation opportunities associated with the remaining connections.

[0089] According to an embodiment, each connection sharing an RF transceiver chain, such as connections SIM A and SIM B in Figure 3 above, may be ranked or prioritized. The UE 300 may signal to a network entity, e.g., 308 in Figure 3, only information regarding an action opportunity, such as a paging opportunity, associated with another connection having the same or higher rank or priority than the rank or priority of the current connection. For example, considering a UE with three connections identified by their respective SIM cards, a primary SIM card, a secondary SIM card, and a tertiary SIM card may be defined. In such an embodiment, assuming that the secondary SIM card provides a current connection to the network entity, the UE signals only the paging information of the primary SIM card, but not the paging information of the tertiary SIM card, to a network entity such as entity 308 in Figure 3, so that the network entity 308 can calculate / recalculate paging occasions of the current connection associated with the secondary SIM card based on the paging information of the primary SIM card to avoid conflicts between paging occasions associated with the secondary SIM card and paging occasions of the primary SIM card. Similarly, if the current connection is provided by the tertiary SIM card, the paging information of the primary SIM card and the paging information of the secondary SIM card are transmitted to the network entity to enable the network entity to calculate / recalculate paging occasions of the tertiary SIM card based on the paging information of the primary and secondary SIM cards.

[0090] The rank or priority of a connection may be determined or determined by the UE, or by a network entity, or by an over-the-top, OTT application.

[0091] Thus, an embodiment of the first aspect of the present invention addresses the problem of potentially overlapping operational opportunities of connections sharing an RF transceiver chain of a multi-connection UE. A network entity to which the UE is connected via a current connection is provided with information regarding the operational opportunities of each of the other connections, thereby enabling the current network entity to determine periods during which the UE is unavailable to the network entity and / or to calculate / recalculate or arrange / rearrange operational opportunities of the current connection to avoid collisions, conflicts or overlaps. This approach is advantageous as it avoids delays in obtaining information on each operational opportunity, thereby reducing or avoiding delays or loss of data in any one of the connections. The information regarding each operational opportunity may be information from the UE regarding one or more or all operational opportunities related to one or more or all other connections, and / or may be an indication from the UE, or may form one or more other network entities from which operational opportunities of one or some or all connections can be derived, and / or may be associated with a unique identity of each of the sharded connections.

[0092] According to further embodiments, the UE 300 of FIG. 3 may, for example, switch to a second connected SIM B at a certain time and also inform the network entity 310 about the paging information of SIM card A, allowing the network entity 310 to also calculate / recalculate paging occasions to avoid collisions, overlaps or contentions.

[0093] According to an embodiment, a network entity such as the paging information receiving entity 308 may extend a timer for declaring a radio link failure RLF by at least the duration of the period during which the UE is unavailable because it is transmitting / receiving to / from another network entity using another one of the connections, or the duration of the operation opportunity associated with the other connection. Since the network entity 310 is aware of the time when the UE is unavailable by performing specific operations on the other connection, it may not schedule any data for the UE for the duration of the period during which the UE is unavailable, or for the duration of the operation opportunity associated with the other connection. Aspect 2

[0094] According to an embodiment of the second aspect of the present invention, the above-mentioned problem of service interruption is addressed by keeping the system informed of situations in which the UE tunes away from a current connection in order to perform an operation on another one of the connections that share the same RF transmitter chain as the current connection at a particular operational opportunity.

[0095] FIG. 4 illustrates an embodiment of applying a tune-away signal signaled to a serving network entity before switching to one or more operations in another connection. In a similar manner to FIG. 3, the UE 300 is shown using SIM cards A and B to identify the respective connections, where the first connection may be referred to as connection SIM A and the second connection may be referred to as connection SIM B. Again, a single RF transceiver chain 300B is shown, but the UE 300 may include multiple RF transceiver chains. The transceiver chain 300b is shared by the two connections SIM A and SIM B, and the UE can switch between the two connections as shown at 306 to transmit / receive using either the first connection SIM A or the second connection SIM B. In the embodiment shown in FIG. 4, it is assumed that the connection SIM A is in an RRC connected state, i.e., a connection connected to the network entity 308 via antenna 110 as shown at 312. Thus, the connection SIM A may also be referred to as the current connection in which the UE is currently transmitting to and receiving from the network entity, and the connection SIM B in RRC idle or RRC inactive state may be referred to as the other connection in which the UE is not currently transmitting to and receiving from the network entity. In the embodiment of FIG. 4, it is assumed that the other connection, the second connection SIM B, is for a connection to another network entity 310 in a similar manner as described above with reference to FIG. 3. The network entity 308 may also be referred to as a serving network entity, since it comprises the current connection to the UE 300. According to an embodiment of the second aspect, in order to keep the serving network entity 308 informed about the tune-away situation, the UE 300 transmits a tune-away signal TAS to inform the network entity 308 of the switch to the other SIM card SIM B. The UE 300 is aware of the situation in which it needs to switch to the second connection SIM B, for example, when the paging channel needs to be read by the second connection SIM B or when any of the other operations described above are performed.

[0096] The tune away signal informs the network entity 308 that the UE currently being served by the network entity 308 via a current connection is switching to another connection, for example for a period of time, and may therefore not be reachable or available to the UE 308. This knowledge at the network entity is advantageous as it allows the network entity to handle the interruption, consider it an interruption in service, and avoid any unexpected behavior. For example, the network entity may extend a timer for declaring a radio link failure RLF in response to the tune away signal and in response to the knowledge regarding the duration of the tune away situation. According to a further embodiment, the network entity 308 does not schedule data for the UE for a certain period of time after receiving the tune away signal.

[0097] According to an embodiment, the tune away signal may include an indication of the action taken by the UE and / or the time at which the UE has tuned away from the action of the current connection. x The TAS may include x bits indicating a status. For example, the status may indicate a type of operation, e.g., a first type of operation is of a first length and is shorter than the length of a second type of operation. A short type of operation may include, e.g., a paging operation, a measurement operation, or a TA update. A long type of operation may include, e.g., a call or data transfer / connection that takes more time than a simple paging operation. Furthermore, the TAS may indicate the actual time that the UE is tuned away from the current connection, e.g., 2 ms, 5 ms, 100 ms or longer.

[0098] According to further embodiments, the operation on the other connection to which the UE has tuned away may take longer, e.g., longer than a predefined time defined or indicated by the TAS. In such a situation, the UE may inform the network entity of the current connection that the duration of the tune away is longer than the duration of the tune away defined for the TAS. For example, if an indication is given at the time of tune away or in response to receiving further information regarding the operation from the other connection to which the UE has tuned away that the operation on the other connection is to take longer, the UE may send or signal a so-called long tune away signal, long TAS, to the network entity of the current connection. If an indication is given for some time while the UE is tuned away, the UE may send or signal a so-called TAS update to the network entity of the current connection. For example, the additional information may indicate that a call is to be received, via a paging occasion, or an indication may be received that data is about to be transmitted to the UE, or an indication may be received that some kind of high priority operation needs to be performed by the UE via the other connection. According to an embodiment, in response to the long tune away signal, the UE may switch the current connection to an inactive state, and once operations on the other connection are completed, the UE may signal a return signal or RACH to the network entity informing the network entity 308 that the tune away state has now ended and the UE's connection will revert back to its original current connection.

[0099] Considering the embodiment of FIG. 4, initially the current connection is the connecting SIM A, but some operations need to be performed on the connecting SIM B, so that a tune-away signal is signaled on the current connection to the network entity 308 to inform this network entity that the UE is unavailable for a certain period of time on the current connection. The second connecting SIM B is then switched to the RF chain 300b to connect to the network entity 310. At this time, the current connection may move to an RRC inactive state according to the embodiment. Before tuning away the second connection, the UE may be informed of the type and / or length of the operations to be performed, so that the TAS may include the additional information mentioned above to inform the network entity 308 in more detail about the period of time the UE is unavailable.

[0100] The resources for the TAS may be pre-configured and sent to the UE 300 in an RRC configuration / reconfiguration message, or the resources may be dynamically allocated as part of resource allocation during the RRC connected state.

[0101] The provision of TAS is advantageous as it helps the network entity to understand the behavior of the multi-SIM or multi-connection UE 300 in order to deal with situations where a UE actually being served by the network entity 308 is unreachable due to the time required to perform one or more operations for other connections such as cell selection / reselection, paging, system information and tracking / routing area update, SPS transmission, CG transmission or measurements. Aspect 3

[0102] According to an embodiment of the third aspect of the present invention, as described above, timers and / or hold states are provided to reduce or avoid any uncertainty regarding the behavior of a multi-connected UE with respect to interruptions in service.

[0103] According to an embodiment, a network entity, such as network entity 308 shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, may be aware of one or more opportunities associated with other connections for which a particular action with respect to the other connections is to be performed.

[0104] For example, considering FIG. 3 and the above-described first aspect of the invention, by providing the currently serving network entity 308 with information regarding the operation opportunities of other connections sharing the same RF transmitter chain, the network entity 308 is made aware of one or more operation opportunities associated with the other connections, and based on that knowledge, the network entity can recognize an opportunity or instance when a UE currently served by the network entity tunes away from the network entity for a particular period or temporarily to perform an operation on another one of the other connections. Based on this knowledge, the network entity knows that the UE has only temporarily tuned away from the network entity, and when such a time instance or opportunity is recognized by the network entity, according to an embodiment, the network entity 308 can start a timer and / or put the current connection on hold to avoid an error condition of the network entity 308. Similarly, considering the second aspect and the embodiment described above with reference to FIG. 4, the network entity 308 is made aware of the tune away by receiving a tune away signal, and in such an embodiment, the network entity can start a timer and / or put the current connection on hold in response to receiving the tune away signal.

[0105] Therefore, the tune-away timer T tune_awayAccording to an embodiment using the tune-away timer, uncertainty of the behavior of a multi-connection UE in the currently connected network entity can be avoided. According to an embodiment, the range of the timer can incorporate the switching time across one or more other connections and the processing time of data received via the other connection. According to an embodiment, for the time set by the tune-away timer, the network entity does not schedule any data for the multi-SIM UE via the current connection to which the UE is temporarily tuned. According to an embodiment, the length of the timer can depend on one or more UE capabilities and the time required to perform one or more operations on the other connection, such as cell selection / reselection, paging, system information and drag / routing area updates, SPS transmission, CG transmission, and measurements performed on the other connection.

[0106] According to a further embodiment of the present invention, in order to avoid the above-mentioned service interruption problems, the network entity may put the current connection or the RRC connected connection of the multi-connection UE in a pending state. For example, if a multi-connection UE has a current connection in a RRC connected state with a network entity and has to tune away to another connection based on dynamic signaling (see second aspect, TAS) or based on knowledge of other action opportunities (see first aspect), the serving network entity may put the UE's current connection in a pending state. The advantage of the pending state is that the core network maintains the context of the UE's current connection and at the same time can also reuse some or all of the resources allocated to the current connection for other UEs served by the network entity. This allows for improved resource management and more efficient use of available resources in the network entity. The network entity may also set the tune away timer T tune_away If a tune-away timer is also started, the network entity may keep the current connection on hold for the duration of the tune-away timer, the length of which may be adjusted based on particular requirements.

[0107] FIG. 5 illustrates an embodiment of the third aspect of the present invention, where a current connection of a multi-connection UE is put on hold based on the network entity's knowledge of a particular operation opportunity in another connection, without using a tune-away signal. Although FIG. 5 illustrates an embodiment with respect to a paging opportunity, one skilled in the art will readily recognize that the principles described herein may equally be applied to any other operation occurring in another connection, such as the operations described and illustrated above. First, as shown at 350, a situation is assumed, for example as shown in FIG. 3, i.e., a first connection SIM A is a current connection in an RRC connected state with the network entity 308. The UE 300 has provided a paging opportunity of another connection, such as a connection SIM B, to the network entity 308, as shown at 352, such that the network entity knows the PO information of the other SIM card or other connection. At 354, the network entity 308, based on its knowledge of the PO information of the other SIM cards, knows that at time t1 shown in the right part of FIG. 5, a paging operation needs to be performed by the other connected SIM B, so that the UE 300 switches the second connected SIM B to the RF chain 300b for connection to the network entity 310. At time t1, the network entity 308 puts the first connected SIM A on hold and starts the tune away timer T monitored as shown at 356. tune_away 5. The first connection SIM A is maintained in the held state as long as the timer has not expired. When the timer expires at t2, as shown in the right portion of FIG. 5, the network entity 308 resumes the RRC connected state operation using the initial or first connection SIM A, as shown at 358. For example, the UE reconnects the first or current connection SIM A to the RF chain 300b.

[0108] Figure 6 illustrates a further embodiment of the third aspect of the invention, using a hold state and a tune-away timer in response to a tune-away signal. In Figure 6, similar to Figure 5, an initial situation is assumed, as indicated at 360, where a first connection SIM A is the current connection, RRC connected with the network entity 308, e.g. as described with reference to Figure 4. In response to recognising that an action needs to be performed on the other connection SIM B, the UE sends a TAS, as indicated at 362, to the network entity 308, so that at time t1, the network entity 308 considers the current connection SIM A to be in a hold state, as indicated at 364, and simultaneously starts the tune-away timer T tune_away is started. The tune-away timer is monitored and during the timer the network entity 308 keeps the current connection in a pending state, e.g. RRC inactive or RRC connected, until the timer expires at t2. In response to the expiration of the tune-away timer at t2, the network entity 308 may resume operation over the initially connected SIM A, as shown at 370. In other words, according to an embodiment, when the tune-away timer expires, the previously connected network entity may continue scheduling to the multi-connection UE 300 and may expect configured uplink transmissions from the currently connected UE of SIM A, such as PUCCH and CG.

[0109] According to another embodiment, upon expiration of the tune away timer, rather than immediately resuming operation of the initial current connection SIM A, the multi-connection UE may again signal a tune away signal to the network entity 308 that was connected to the current connection SIM A before tune away to indicate that it has returned from the tune away state, such that the network entity may continue scheduling using the connection SIM A in response to receiving the second TAS, as shown at 368 in FIG. 6 .

[0110] The resources for the tune-away signal may remain consistent during the hold state and may be used to transmit the tune-away signal again upon expiration of the tune-away timer.

[0111] According to an embodiment, while in the pending state, the network entity 308 does not expect any configured uplink transmissions from the UE using connected SIM A, such as PUCCH, PUSCH, or CG.

[0112] According to a further embodiment of the third aspect of the present invention, a hold state expiration timer T starts at the end of the tune away timer. hold_exp This timer may be set to T hold_exp As such, a period may be defined during which the network entity 308 serving the previous current state where the UE temporarily tuned away maintains the context of the multi-connected UE. At the expiration of this further timer, the previously serving network entity 308 may declare a radio link failure RLF and may continue with the RLF recovery procedure. At the end of the tune away time, an additional pending state expiry timer may be used in the embodiment described above with reference to Figure 6 and is applicable to both situations where an additional TAS is sent at 368 or where no additional TAS is sent.

[0113] FIG. 7 is a flow chart illustrating an embodiment in which a hold expiry timer is used in a scenario in which a further TAS is received from the UE to signal that the UE has returned to the initial current connection SIM A after the tune away timer has expired. Initially, as in FIG. 6, in FIG. 7 the first connection SIM A is considered to be RRC connected with the network entity 308 as shown at 360. Blocks 362 to 366 are also the same as in FIG. 6, but when the timer expires at 366, a hold expiry timer is started and it is determined at 368 whether the UE has sent a TAS to the network entity 308. If not, then at 372 it is checked whether the hold expiry timer has expired. If not, the flow returns to 368 to determine whether the UE has sent a TAS. If the UE has sent a TAS, the network entity resumes the connection with the UE as shown at 370, as described above with reference to FIG. 6. If the pending expiration timer expires before the UE transmits the TAS, the flow proceeds to 374 where a radio link failure is declared and a radio link failure recovery procedure is initiated.

[0114] According to a further embodiment, in view of the above-mentioned situation where a particular operation performed on another connection takes more time than expected, the tune away timer T tune_away , pending and / or pending expiration timer T hold_exp may be processed differently. As described above, if the tune away duration is longer than the tune away duration defined for the TAS, then a long tune away signal, long TAS or TAS update as described above may be received. tune_awayIf a long tune away signal or TAS update is received within the duration of , and if only the tune away timer is used (no pending state), the network entity stops the tune away timer. If the network entity uses only the pending state (the tune away timer is not started), the network entity removes the pending state. If the network entity uses both the tune away timer and the pending state, the network entity stops the tune away timer and removes the pending state. Additionally, if the pending state expiry timer is used, a network entity stopping the pending state expiry timer removes the pending state.

[0115] According to a further embodiment, in response to the TAS, in case of certain circumstances, e.g. delivery of an important message by the network entity over the current connection, the network entity informs the UE that the tune away is to be postponed, e.g. by signalling a delta timer to the UE. Similarly, in response to a long tune away signal or a TAS update, in case of certain circumstances, e.g. delivery of an important message by the network entity over the current connection, the network entity informs the UE that the tune away extension is to be postponed, e.g. by signalling a delta timer to the UE.

[0116] According to further embodiments of the present invention, when tuning away from a current connection, a transition of the current connection to an RRC inactive state may be enabled when a multi-connection UE tunes away to accommodate a service or operation on one or more of the other connections. The UE may issue a tune away signal using the current connection while in the RRC connected state and transition the current connection to the RRC inactive state to perform an operation, such as reading a paging opportunity on the other connection. A hold state may also be valid in the RRC inactive state, and some of the inactive state procedures may be deprioritized when in the hold state. While in the RRC inactive state, the UE may use the timers mentioned above and may return the initial current connection to the RRC connected state once the operation is completed, e.g., upon expiration of the PO scanning timer. According to other embodiments, since the RRC context is still established in the RRC inactive mode, the UE may also request a SIB from the base station via the initial current connection SIM A, which may be used by the gNB or network entity 308 to obtain the SIB and return the initial connection SIM A to the RRC connected state.
