Abstract
Description
[Technical Field]
[0001] Aspects of the present disclosure relate to wireless communication, and more particularly, to techniques for paging early indication (PEI) in wireless communication systems. [Background technology]
[0002]
[0002] Wireless communication systems have been widely deployed to provide various telecommunication services, such as telephone, video, data, messaging, broadcast, or other similar types of services. These wireless communication systems may utilize multiple access techniques that can support communication with multiple users by sharing available system resources (e.g., bandwidth, transmit power, or other resources) with the users. Multiple access techniques may rely on any of the following: code division, time division, frequency division orthogonal frequency division, single carrier frequency division, or time division synchronous code division, to name a few. These and other multiple access techniques have been adopted in various telecommunication standards to provide a common protocol that allows various wireless devices to communicate at city, national, regional, and even global levels.

[0015]
[0028] Aspects of the present disclosure provide systems and methods for paging based on a paging early indication (PEI). For example, in some cases, a user equipment (UE) may be configured with a set of paging cycles for receiving paging information from a base station (BS) of a wireless communication network. In some cases, a PEI indicating whether paging information will be transmitted to the UE during one or more second paging cycles of the set of paging cycles occurring after the first paging cycle may be provided to the UE during a first paging cycle of the set of paging cycles. By transmitting the PEI during the first paging cycle, the UE may have sufficient time to determine and receive a certain number of synchronization signal block (SSB) bursts or reference signal (RS) occasions required to receive the paging information transmitted during one or more second paging cycles. Furthermore, such techniques may enable the UE to conserve power by determining to forgo receiving certain SSB bursts or RS occasions before receiving the paging information. Furthermore, these techniques may be applicable to all UEs in a network regardless of downlink channel conditions or UE hardware capabilities. For example, these techniques allow a BS to transmit a PEI at a single position in the first paging cycle for all UEs regardless of downlink channel conditions and UE hardware capabilities, thereby saving power and reducing signaling overhead at the BS.
[0016] Overview of Wireless Communication Networks
[0029] FIG. 1 illustrates an example of a wireless communication system 100 in which aspects described herein may be implemented.
[0017]
[0030] Generally, the wireless communication system 100 includes a base station (BS) 102, a user equipment (UE) 104, an evolved packet core (EPC) 160, and a core network 190 (e.g., 5G Core (5GC)), which cooperate to provide wireless communication services.
[0018]
[0031] The base station 102 may provide an access point to the EPC 160 and / or core network 190 for the UE 104 and may perform one or more of the following functions: transfer of user data, encryption and decryption of radio channels, integrity protection, header compression, mobility control functions (e.g., handover, dual connectivity), inter-cell interference coordination, connection setup and release, load balancing, Non-Access Stratum (NAS) message delivery, NAS node selection, synchronization, Radio Access Network (RAN) sharing, Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Services (MBMS), subscriber and equipment tracing, RAN Information Management (RIM), paging, positioning, delivery of alert messages, among others. A base station may, in various contexts, include or be called a gNB, Node B, eNB, access point, base transceiver station, radio base station, radio transceiver or transceiver function, or transmission / reception point (TRP).
[0019]
[0032] The base stations 102 communicate wirelessly with the UEs 104 via communication links 120. Each base station 102 may provide communication coverage to a respective, possibly overlapping, geographic coverage area 110. For example, a small cell 102' (e.g., a low-power base station) may have a coverage area 110' that overlaps with the coverage area 110 of one or more macrocells (e.g., high-power base stations).
[0020]
[0033] The communication link 120 between the base station 102 and the UE 104 may include uplink (UL) (also called a reserve link) transmissions from the UE 104 to the base station 102, and / or downlink (DL) (also called a forward link) transmissions from the base station 102 to the UE 104. The communication link 120 may use multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna techniques, such as spatial multiplexing, beamforming, and / or transmit diversity in various aspects.
[0021]
[0034] Examples of UEs 104 include a mobile phone, smartphone, session initiation protocol (SIP) phone, laptop, personal digital assistant (PDA), satellite radio, global positioning system, multimedia device, video device, digital audio player, camera, game console, tablet, smart device, wearable device, vehicle, electric meter, gas pump, large or small kitchen appliance, health management device, implant, sensor / actuator, display, or other similar device. Some UEs 104 may be Internet of Things (IoT) devices (e.g., parking meter, gas pump, toaster, vehicle, heart monitor, or other IoT device), always-on (AON) devices, or edge processing devices. UEs 104 may also be more commonly referred to as stations, mobile stations, subscriber stations, mobile units, subscriber units, wireless units, remote units, mobile devices, wireless devices, wireless communication devices, remote devices, mobile subscriber stations, access terminals, mobile terminals, wireless terminals, remote terminals, handsets, user agents, mobile clients, or clients.
[0022]
[0035] A base station 102 in the wireless communication network 100 may include a paging early indication (PEI) component 199 that may be configured to perform the operations shown in Figures 6, 9, and 11, as well as other operations described herein for PEI-based paging. Additionally, a UE 104 in the wireless communication network 100 may include a PEI component 198 that may be configured to perform the operations shown in Figures 5, 8, 10, and 12, as well as other operations described herein for PEI-based paging.
[0023]
[0036] FIG. 2 illustrates aspects of a base station (BS) 102 and a user equipment (UE) 104.
[0024]
[0037] Generally, the BS 102 includes various processors (e.g., 220, 230, 238, and 240), antennas 234a-t, transceivers 232a-t, and other aspects involved in transmitting data (e.g., source data 212) and receiving data (e.g., data sink 239). For example, the BS 102 may send data and receive data between itself and the UE 104. The BS 102 includes a controller / processor 240 that includes a PEI component 241. The PEI component 241 may be configured to implement the PEI component 199 of FIG. 1.
[0025]
[0038] Generally, the UE 104 includes various processors (e.g., 258, 264, 262, and 280), antennas 252a-r, transceivers 254a-r, and other aspects involved in transmitting data (e.g., source data 262) and receiving data (e.g., data sink 260). The UE 104 includes a controller / processor 280 with a PEI component 281. The PEI component 281 may be configured to implement the PEI component 198 of FIG. 1.
[0026]
[0039] Figures 3A-3D illustrate aspects of data structures for a wireless communication network, such as wireless communication network 100 of Figure 1. In particular, Figure 3A is a diagram 300 illustrating an example first subframe within a 5G (e.g., 5G NR) frame structure, Figure 3B is a diagram 330 illustrating an example DL channel within the 5G subframe, Figure 3C is a diagram 350 illustrating an example second subframe within the 5G frame structure, and Figure 3D is a diagram 380 illustrating an example UL channel within the 5G subframe.
[0027]
[0040] Further discussion of Figures 1, 2, and 3A-3D is provided later in this disclosure.
[0028] Aspects of Paging Early Indication Techniques
[0041] In some cases, a user equipment (UE) may operate in various modes, such as a connected mode, an idle mode, or an inactive mode. In some cases, a UE may operate in an idle or inactive mode to conserve power. Generally, when operating in an idle or inactive mode, the UE may reduce its signaling and processing capabilities to conserve power. However, a UE operating in an idle or inactive mode may still consume a certain amount of power to maintain a connection with the network and monitor for paging messages from the network. Generally, the most power-consuming operations performed by a UE in an idle or inactive mode include, for example, a frequency tracking loop update procedure in which the UE estimates a downlink carrier frequency offset from a received reference signal and applies a correction to the received signal to remove the frequency offset. Furthermore, radio link management (RRM) measurements and monitoring and receiving paging messages may also consume a significant amount of power during an idle or inactive mode.
[0029]
[0042] In some cases, power consumption at a UE may depend on and vary depending on various downlink channel conditions, various device types (e.g., enhanced mobile broadband (eMMB) devices or reduced capability (RedCap) devices, such as Internet of Things (IoT) devices), and whether the UE is paged. For example, in some cases, when the UE is in poor channel conditions with a low signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (SINR) (e.g., at the cell edge), the UE may need to consume more power to receive and process more synchronization signal block (SSB) bursts to maintain time, frequency, and gain tracking accuracy. In other cases, when the UE is in good channel conditions with a high SINR (e.g., located at the center of the cell), the UE may not need to perform inter-frequency measurements, causing the UE to consume power. Furthermore, in some cases, a RedCap UE may need to consume more power to process additional SSB bursts to maintain tracking loop accuracy due to a reduced number and size of antennas and reduced bandwidth. Furthermore, in some cases, when a UE is paged, the UE may need to consume more power to process more SSB bursts to receive paging messages transmitted on a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH), which has higher synchronization requirements, than when receiving paging messages transmitted on a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH).
[0030]
[0043] In some cases, when in an idle or inactive mode, the UE typically remains asleep to conserve power and may wake up periodically during a paging cycle or discontinuous reception (DRX) cycle to monitor for paging messages from the network at paging occasions in the paging cycle. In some cases, the UE's ability to monitor for and accurately receive paging messages from the network may depend on the accuracy of time, frequency, and gain tracking maintained during RRM measurements. For example, to monitor for and correctly receive paging messages during paging occasions, the UE may need to ensure that its time, frequency, and gain tracking accuracy is maintained to or above a certain level, especially for paging messages sent on a PDSCH that has higher synchronization requirements. To maintain the time, frequency, and gain tracking accuracy to or above a certain level, the UE may need to monitor for and receive one or more SSBs prior to the paging occasion.
[0031]
[0044] However, the number of SSBs required to maintain a UE's time, frequency, and gain tracking accuracy above a certain level may depend on various factors, such as channel conditions and UE hardware capabilities. For example, in some cases, when the UE is in a weak channel condition, the UE may need to receive and process more SSBs to maintain the UE's time, frequency, and gain tracking accuracy in order to receive paging messages compared to when the UE is in a good channel condition. As a result, the UE may consume more power when receiving and processing SSBs in a weak channel condition compared to when the UE is in a good channel condition.
[0032]
[0045] In some cases, to further save power in the UE, the network may send a Paging Early Indicator (PEI) to the UE, which informs the UE whether the UE is being paged during the paging cycle in which the PEI is received / transmitted. In some cases, if the PEI indicates that the UE is not being paged within the paging cycle, the UE may decide to remain asleep and skip receiving and processing SSB bursts. However, if the PEI indicates that the UE is being paged within the paging cycle, the UE may wake up to receive and process SSB bursts, for example, to update its tracking loop to receive paging messages within the paging cycle in synchronization with the network.
[0033]
[0046] As noted above, in some cases, the number of SSBs that a particular UE may need to receive and process in response to a PEI instructing the UE to receive a paging message at a paging occasion of a paging cycle may depend on the channel conditions of the UE. Thus, when the SSBs within a paging cycle are transmitted sequentially in time prior to the paging occasion, the network may need to determine a particular location within the paging cycle at which to transmit the PEI to enable the particular UE to receive and process a sufficient number of SSBs to receive the paging message within the paging occasion of the paging cycle.
[0034]
[0047] 4 illustrates an exemplary paging cycle 400 for a UE having various locations where a base station transmits a PEI. For example, as shown, paging cycle 400 may include a paging occasion 402 during which a paging message for the UE may be conveyed. Additionally, as shown, multiple SSBs (e.g., SSB 404a, SSB 404b, and SSB 404c) are transmitted sequentially during this paging cycle that the UE may use to synchronize with the network and update its tracking loop to receive the paging message at paging occasion 402. As noted above, the UE may need to receive and process different numbers of SSBs depending on the channel conditions of the UE to ensure accuracy of time, frequency, and gain tracking.
[0035]
[0048] For example, when the UE is in good channel conditions with a high SINR, the UE may only need to receive SSB 404c (e.g., transmitted closest to paging occasion 402) and the UE may be able to avoid receiving and processing SSB 404a and SSB 404b, thereby saving power at the UE. When the UE is in fair channel conditions with a moderate SINR, the UE may need to receive two SSBs, such as SSB 404b and SSB 404c. In this case, the UE may still be able to avoid receiving and processing SSB 404a (e.g., transmitted furthest from paging occasion 402), allowing the UE to save power. However, when the UE is in poor channel conditions, the UE may need to receive three SSBs (e.g., SSB 404a, SSB 404b, and SSB 404c) to maintain time, frequency, and gain tracking accuracy.
[0036]
[0049] Thus, depending on the UE's DL channel conditions, there may be various advantageous positions during the paging cycle for transmitting the PEI to notify the UE that it will be paged during paging occasion 402. For example, paging cycle 400 of FIG. 4 shows six different positions, each of which may be advantageous for UEs in different channel conditions. For example, in some cases, it may be advantageous for a UE in good channel conditions with a high SINR if the network transmits the PEI in position 5 or 6 because the UE may be able to save power by choosing not to subsequently receive and process SSBs 404a and 404b. In other cases, it may be advantageous for the network to transmit the PEI in position 1 or 2 to provide a UE in poor channel conditions with a low SINR with the opportunity to receive SSBs 404a, 404b, and 404c to improve the accuracy of time, frequency, and gain tracking.
[0037]
[0050] However, in many cases, the network may not know the DL channel conditions of UEs in idle / inactive mode, and therefore may not know the most advantageous location within the paging cycle 400 to transmit the PEI to a particular UE. Therefore, because different UEs in the network may each have different DL channel conditions, the network may have to transmit the PEI at multiple different locations so that all UEs in the network can benefit from the PEI (e.g., save power), which increases the signaling overhead and power consumption of the network.
[0038]
[0051] Therefore, aspects of the present disclosure provide techniques for improving power conservation in a network and reducing paging-related signaling overhead based on a single PEI transmission to all UEs with different DL channel conditions and different hardware capabilities. For example, such techniques may include transmitting a first PEI in a first paging cycle to indicate whether paging information will be transmitted to the UE in a second paging cycle that occurs after the first paging cycle, and providing the UE with an opportunity to determine how many SSBs or reference signal (RS) occasions it should receive in the second paging cycle before receiving the paging information. For example, in some cases, a UE in good channel conditions may choose to receive fewer SSBs in the second paging cycle before receiving the paging information to save power. Conversely, a UE in weak channel conditions may choose to receive more SSBs in the second paging cycle before receiving the paging information to improve the accuracy of time, frequency, and gain tracking. Additionally, in some cases, to increase power savings, the first PEI may be transmitted within a paging occasion during the first paging cycle or within some threshold time of the paging occasion so that multiple UEs do not have to wake up from sleep periods separately to receive the first PEI.
[0039]
[0052] In some cases, these PEI transmission techniques may be suitable for UEs that can tolerate more latency for paging reception. For example, the network may postpone transmission of a paging message to the UE for one or more paging cycles without a substantial impact on the UE's paging performance. In some cases, such UEs may include Release 17 RedCap UEs (or even less power-hungry devices in future releases) that can remain in idle / inactive mode most of the time and are not sensitive to increased paging latency.
[0040]
[0053] 5 illustrates a process 500 for wireless communications. As an example, a UE (e.g., UE 104 in wireless communications network 100), or a portion thereof, may perform, or be configured, operable, or adapted to perform, the operations of process 500 for receiving paging information according to a PEI. As another example, the operations of process 500 may be implemented as software components executed and running on one or more processors (e.g., controller / processor 280 of FIG. 2). Signals associated with the operations may be transmitted or received by the UE by one or more antennas (e.g., antenna 252 of FIG. 2) or via a bus interface of one or more processors (e.g., controller / processor 280) that acquire and / or output the signals.
[0041]
[0054] Process 500 begins at block 502 by determining a set of paging cycles for receiving paging information from a base station (BS).
[0042]
[0055] In block 504, the UE receives a first PEI from the BS during a first paging cycle of the set of paging cycles, where the first PEI indicates whether paging information will be transmitted to the UE during one or more second paging cycles of the set of paging cycles that occur after the first paging cycle.
[0043]
[0056] At block 506, the UE receives paging information during one or more second paging cycles based on the first PEI received during the first paging cycle.
[0044]
[0057] 6 illustrates a process 600 for wireless communications. As an example, a BS (e.g., BS 102 in wireless communications network 100), or a portion thereof, may perform, or be configured, operable, or adapted to perform, the operations of process 600 for transmitting paging information according to a PEI. As another example, the operations of process 600 may be implemented as software components executed and running on one or more processors (e.g., controller / processor 240 of FIG. 2). Signals associated with the operations may be transmitted or received by the BS by one or more antennas (e.g., antenna 234 of FIG. 2) or via a bus interface of one or more processors (e.g., controller / processor 240) that acquire and / or output the signals.
[0045]
[0058] Process 600 begins at block 602 by determining a set of paging cycles for transmitting paging information to the UE.
[0046]
[0059] In block 604, the BS transmits a first PEI to the UE during a first paging cycle of the set of paging cycles, wherein the first PEI indicates whether paging information is to be transmitted to the UE during one or more second paging cycles of the set of paging cycles that occur after the first paging cycle.
[0047]
[0060] At block 606, the BS transmits paging information during one or more second paging cycles indicated by the first PEI.
[0048] Additional details about Paging Early Indication
[0061] As noted above, in some cases, a base station (e.g., BS 102 of FIG. 1) may transmit a first PEI to a UE (e.g., UE 104 of FIG. 1) during a first paging cycle of a set of paging cycles. In some cases, the first PEI indicates whether paging information is transmitted to the UE during one or more second paging cycles of the set of paging cycles that occur after the first paging cycle.
[0049]
[0062] FIG. 7A illustrates an example timeline showing transmission in a first paging cycle of a first PEI indicating whether paging information is transmitted to a UE during the second paging cycle, in accordance with certain aspects of the present disclosure. For example, as shown, FIG. 7A includes two paging cycles, namely, a first paging cycle 702a and a second paging cycle 702b. As illustrated, each of the first paging cycles 702a may include a first plurality of SSBs (e.g., SSBs 704a, 704b, and 704c) that may be used by a UE to synchronize with a BS (or, for example, a network associated with the BS) to maintain time, frequency, and gain tracking accuracy. Additionally, the first paging cycle 702a may include a paging occasion 706a during which the UE may wake up from a sleep period to monitor for paging information transmitted by the BS. In other words, the paging occasion 706a is a time period (e.g., a time window) within the first paging cycle 702a during which the UE is awake and monitors for paging information transmitted by the BS. Similarly, the second paging cycle 702b may include a second plurality of SSBs (e.g., SSB 704d, SSB 704e, and SSB 704f) and a second paging occasion 706b.
[0050]
[0063] In some cases, the BS may transmit the first PEI 708a to the UE in the first paging cycle 702a. In some cases, the first PEI 708a may include the first PEI transmitted by the BS at block 604 of FIG. 6 and received by the UE at block 504 of FIG. 5. According to an aspect, the first PEI 708a may indicate whether paging information is transmitted to the UE in a second paging cycle 702b (or one or more subsequent paging cycles) that occurs after the first paging cycle 702a.
[0051]
[0064] In some cases, to reduce power consumption at the UE, the first PEI 708a may be transmitted at one location within the first paging cycle 702a (e.g., rather than multiple locations as described above), within the first paging occasion 706a of the first paging cycle 702a, or in its vicinity of the first paging occasion 706a (e.g., within a threshold time from the first paging occasion 706a). In other words, in some cases, the first PEI 708a may be transmitted within the first paging occasion 706a (e.g., associated with the UE) during the first paging cycle 702a. In other cases, the first PEI 708a may be transmitted within a time window occurring prior to the first paging occasion 706a during the first paging cycle 702a, but within a threshold amount of time from the first paging occasion 706a. By transmitting the first PEI 708a within the first paging occasion 706a or within a threshold amount of time from the first paging occasion 706a, the UE may not need to wake up from a sleep period to separately receive the first PEI 708a. Instead, the UE may use one awake period to receive the first PEI 708a for the second paging cycle 702b and process the first paging occasion 706a of the first paging cycle 702a (e.g., if the UE is paged during the first paging cycle 702a). In other words, the UE may use the awake period already scheduled for the first paging occasion 706a to receive the first PEI 708a, thereby saving power (or at least preventing the UE from consuming much additional power to receive the first PEI 708a).
[0065] In some cases, if the first PEI 708a indicates that paging information will be transmitted to the UE in the second paging cycle 702b, the UE may receive the paging information within the second paging occasion 706b in the second paging cycle 702b (e.g., based on the first PEI 708a received during the first paging cycle 702a). In some cases, depending on whether the first PEI 708a indicates that the UE will be paged in the second paging cycle 702b, the UE may determine at least one of the number of SSB bursts to receive or the number of RS occasions to receive within the second paging cycle 702b (and one or more subsequent paging cycles) before receiving the paging information in the second paging occasion 706b.
[0052]
[0066] In some cases, the number of SSB bursts to receive and the number of RS occasions to receive may be based on one or more factors. For example, in some cases, determining at least one of the number of SSB bursts to receive or the number of RS occasions to receive may be based on downlink channel conditions associated with the UE. For example, if the UE is in a weak channel condition, the UE may determine to receive a larger number of SSB bursts or RS occasions compared to when the UE is in a good channel condition. In some cases, determining at least one of the number of SSB bursts to receive or the number of RS occasions to receive may be based on a capability (e.g., hardware capability) associated with the UE for receiving and processing SSB bursts and / or RS occasions. For example, if the number and / or size of receive antennas are limited, the UE may determine to receive a larger number of SSB bursts and / or RS occasions compared to when the UE's capability to receive SSB and / or RS occasions is higher. Additionally, in some cases, at least one of the number of SSB bursts to receive or the number of RS occasions to receive may be based on the type of physical channel on which the paging information is received. For example, the UE may determine to receive more SSB bursts and / or RS occasions for paging information transmitted on a PDSCH (e.g., which has higher synchronization requirements) compared to a paging PDCCH.
[0053]
[0067] An example of determining the number of SSB bursts / RS occasions to receive is shown in FIG. 7A. For example, as shown, in response to a first PEI 708a received during a first paging cycle 702a, a UE may determine to receive SSBs 704d, 704e, and 704f in a second paging cycle 702b before receiving paging information (e.g., a paging PDSCH) in a second paging occasion 706b. In some cases, as described above, the UE's decision to receive SSBs 704d, 704e, and 704f may be based on DL channel conditions associated with the UE or hardware capabilities associated with the UE. In the example shown in FIG. 7A, the UE may have determined to receive three SSB bursts (e.g., SSBs 704d, 704e, and 704f) due to weak channel conditions.
[0054]
[0068] Furthermore, in some cases, if the UE receives a PEI indicating that the UE will not be paged during a particular paging cycle, the UE may decide to forgo receiving SSB bursts / RS occasions within that particular paging cycle. For example, referring to FIG. 7A, in some cases, the UE may have received a second PEI during a paging cycle occurring before the first paging cycle 702a, indicating that the UE will not be paged during the first paging cycle 702a. This may result in the UE determining to receive fewer SSB bursts / RS occasions in response to this indication that the UE will not be paged in the first paging cycle 702a. For example, as shown in the first paging cycle 702a of FIG. 7A, an "x" is shown below SSBs 704a and 704b to indicate that the UE has decided not to receive or process these SSB bursts and instead to remain asleep to conserve power. Additionally, an "x" character is shown below the first paging occasion 706a to indicate that the UE has decided to remain asleep to conserve power during the first paging occasion 706a because the UE will not be paged at the first paging occasion 706a (e.g., as indicated by a second PEI being received during a paging cycle prior to the first paging cycle 702a). Although the UE decides not to receive SSBs 704a and 704b at the first paging cycle 702a, the UE may still decide to receive SSB 704c to ensure some level of synchronization with the network for receiving PEI 708a.
[0055]
[0069] According to aspects, as described above, an advantage of this cross-paging cycle PEI design (e.g., the PEI of one paging cycle indicating whether the UE will be paged during a subsequent paging cycle) is that one PEI location (e.g., within a paging occasion) may be optimal for all UEs in different DL channel conditions. Furthermore, such a PEI design may enable a UE to accurately determine the number of SSB bursts and RS occasions to process during the paging cycle indicated by the PEI before receiving paging information. While this design may increase paging delays associated with receiving paging information, this increased paging delay may not be an issue for certain devices, such as 5G New Radio (NR) wearable devices and many Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Furthermore, as described above, the above-described PEI design may enable power savings in both the network and the UE. For example, this design enables the network to save power by transmitting the PEI in only one location rather than multiple locations, thereby also reducing signaling overhead in the network. Furthermore, this PEI design saves power at the UE because the UE can adaptively decide not to receive and process certain SSB bursts / RS occasions and instead choose to remain asleep in an idle / inactive mode.
[0056]
[0070] In some cases, to save additional power, if the UE was paged by a PEI received during a previous paging cycle and therefore processes the paging occasion during the current paging cycle, the UE may not receive another PEI during the current paging cycle. This basically means that if the UE is already in an idle / inactive mode and is delay-tolerant, the UE may not need to receive paging information during consecutive paging cycles. In some cases, if paging information needs to be transmitted during consecutive paging cycles, the network may be able to combine paging information (that would otherwise be transmitted during different paging cycles) into the same paging message transmitted in only one paging cycle (e.g., based on the network implementation).
[0057]
[0071] FIG. 7B illustrates an example of a PEI that is not transmitted during consecutive paging cycles according to certain aspects of the present disclosure. For example, FIG. 7B re-shows the second paging cycle 702b and the first PEI 708a of FIG. 7A. According to an aspect, because the first PEI 708a is transmitted during the first paging cycle 702a illustrated in FIG. 7A and indicates that paging information is to be transmitted to the UE in the second paging cycle 702b, the network may refrain from transmitting the second PEI 708b in the second paging cycle 702b (or one or more other paging cycles) indicated by the first PEI 708a, as illustrated in FIG. 7B. Thus, the UE may not receive the second PEI 708b in the second paging cycle 702b indicated by the first PEI 708a. For example, as shown, an "x" is shown below the second PEI 708b to indicate that the UE will not receive the second PEI 708b (e.g., the network will refrain from transmitting it). Although Figure 7B illustrates a case where the PEI is not transmitted during consecutive paging cycles, it should be understood that the PEI transmission in Figure 7B is only one example, and it is still possible that the PEI may be transmitted during consecutive paging cycles, for example, as shown in Figure 7C.
[0058] PEI starting configuration
[0072] In some cases, the above-described technique (e.g., regarding the PEI in the first paging cycle indicating whether paging information will be transmitted in the second paging cycle) may be extended to more flexible paging indication in the PEI. For example, the first PEI may indicate whether the UE will be paged in the starting paging cycle and several consecutive paging cycles after the starting paging cycle. In other words, in some cases, the first PEI 708a (e.g., transmitted at 604 in FIG. 6 and received at 504 in FIG. 5) may be associated with a paging starting configuration. In some cases, the UE may receive paging information at 506 in FIG. 5 in one or more second paging cycles further based on the paging starting configuration.
[0059]
[0073] Various options may be possible for the paging initiation configuration. For example, in a first option, the paging initiation configuration may indicate that paging information is to be received during a first paging cycle. For example, referring to FIG. 7A, in some cases, the first PEI 708a may indicate that paging information is to be transmitted to the UE during the first paging cycle 702a (e.g., at the first paging occasion 706a). Thus, in such cases, the UE may receive paging information during the first paging cycle 702a based on the paging initiation configuration.
[0060]
[0074] In a second option, the paging initiation configuration may indicate N consecutive paging cycles in which paging information is to be transmitted, starting from a current paging cycle, such as the paging cycle in which the first PEI is to be transmitted. In other words, the paging initiation configuration may indicate the number of paging cycles in the one or more second paging cycles in which paging information is to be received, and that the number of paging cycles in the one or more second paging cycles begins with the first paging cycle. An example of this option is shown in FIG. 7C.
[0061]
[0075] For example, Figure 7C again shows the first PEI 708a, the first paging cycle 702a, and the second paging cycle 702b. Figure 7C also shows two additional paging cycles: the third paging cycle 702c and the fourth paging cycle 702d. As shown, in some cases, the start configuration associated with the first PEI 708a may indicate that paging information is present in three consecutive paging cycles (e.g., the second paging cycle 702b, the third paging cycle 702c, and the fourth paging cycle 702d) beginning with the first paging cycle 702a in which the first PEI 708a is received.
[0062]
[0076] In a third option, the paging initiation configuration may indicate, for example, a specific paging cycle in which paging information is received by the UE. In other words, the paging initiation configuration may indicate one specific paging cycle from a set of paging cycles that occurs after the first paging cycle in which paging information is received by the UE.
[0063]
[0077] In a fourth option, the paging initiation configuration may indicate M consecutive paging cycles in which paging information is to be transmitted, e.g., starting from yet another paging cycle, such as a paging cycle occurring after the paging cycle in which the first PEI is transmitted. In other words, in some cases, the paging initiation configuration may indicate a number of paging cycles in the one or more second paging cycles in which paging information is to be received, where the number of paging cycles in the one or more second paging cycles begins with a paging cycle occurring after the first paging cycle.
[0064]
[0078] In some cases, which option of the initiation paging configuration may be applied may be selected / configured by the network / BS in various manners. For example, in a first manner of selecting / configuring the paging initiation configuration, the paging initiation configuration may be based on a reported preference of the UE. For example, the UE may send an indication of the preference in a report to the BS. In some cases, the reported preference may indicate a paging delay threshold of the UE associated with the first PEI. Thus, the BS may select one of the four options of the paging initiation configuration mentioned above based on the paging delay threshold of the UE. The BS may then send signaling to configure the UE with the selected paging initiation configuration option.
[0065]
[0079] In a second manner of selecting / configuring a paging initiation configuration, the paging initiation configuration may be based on a wireless communication standard and a category associated with the UE. In some cases, the category associated with the UE indicates a paging delay threshold for the UE associated with the first PEI. For example, in some cases, the BS may determine a category associated with the UE (e.g., based on capability information received from the UE in some cases). Then, based on the determined UE category, the BS may determine a paging delay threshold for the UE using the wireless communication standard. The BS may select one of the four paging initiation configuration options described above based on the UE's paging delay threshold. The BS may then transmit signaling to configure the UE with the selected paging initiation configuration option.
[0066]
[0080] Furthermore, in a third manner of selecting / configuring a paging initiation configuration, the paging initiation configuration may be semi-statically configured by the BS in one of paging configuration information, a system information block (SIB), or a radio resource connection (RRC) release message sent to the UE during the UE's RRC release procedure. For example, the BS may send signaling to the UE to semi-statically configure the UE to use one of the four paging initiation configuration options described above. Thus, the UE may receive an indication of one of the four paging initiation configuration options in the signaling and receive paging information accordingly. The UE may continue to use the particular paging initiation configuration option until it receives an indication of a new paging initiation configuration option to use to receive paging information.
[0067]
[0081] In a fourth manner of selecting / configuring a paging initiation configuration, the paging initiation configuration may be dynamically configured by the BS for a first PEI. For example, in some cases, the first PEI may include an indication of one of the four paging initiation configuration options described above. Thus, the UE may receive the indication of one of the four paging initiation configuration options in the first PEI and receive paging information accordingly. Thereafter, when the UE receives an additional PEI, the UE may receive paging information according to the new paging initiation configuration option indicated in the additional PEI.
[0068]
[0082] It should be noted that different schemes for selecting / configuring different paging initiation configuration options may also be applied together to a UE in an idle / inactive mode. For example, the signaling for semi-statically configuring the UE may include an indication of a maximum number of paging cycles for receiving paging information (e.g., indicated by a first PEI), and the first PEI may dynamically change the actual indicated number of paging cycles for receiving paging information.
[0069] An exemplary adaptive paging cycle indicated via the PEI
[0083] According to an aspect, the above-described technique may provide an adaptive paging cycle skip technique. In other words, the first PEI may adaptively indicate to the UE whether to skip receiving paging information within a particular paging cycle. An alternative method for achieving a similar effect may be to use an adaptive paging cycle indicated by the PEI.
[0070]
[0084] For example, in some cases, the BS may determine a set of paging cycles for transmitting paging information to the UE. Similarly, the UE may determine a set of paging cycles for receiving paging information. The BS may then transmit a PEI that may be received by the UE. In some cases, the PEI includes an indication to the UE that paging information will be transmitted during one or more paging cycles of the set of paging cycles. The PEI may also include additional information related to reception of the paging information. The BS may then transmit paging information that may be received by the UE during one or more paging cycles indicated by the PEI. In some cases, the paging information may be received by the UE according to the additional information in the PEI.
[0071]
[0085] In some cases, the additional information in the PEI related to receiving paging information includes an indication of the cycle length of one or more paging cycles for monitoring for and receiving paging information (e.g., from a BS). In some cases, the cycle length may be dynamically indicated in each PEI received by the UE.
[0072]
[0086] In some cases, the additional information may include a flag indicating one paging cycle of the default group for receiving paging information. For example, the UE may receive the flag and determine that the flag corresponds to a specific paging cycle. The UE may then receive paging information according to the determined specific paging cycle. In some cases, the paging cycle of the default group may be configured for the UE in a system information block (SIB) or a radio resource control (RRC) release message from the BS (e.g., before the UE transitions to an idle / inactive mode). For example, the BS may send signaling to the UE including configuration information to configure the paging cycle of the default group. In some cases, the configuration information may be sent in at least one of the SIB or the RRC release message.
[0073]
[0087] In some cases, the flag may include one bit to indicate whether the paging cycle is increased or decreased relative to the current paging cycle according to which the UE is operating. Thus, in some cases, the UE may adjust the current paging cycle according to the flag in the PEI and then receive paging information during one or more paging cycles based on the adjusted paging cycle. In some cases, the application delay for applying the new paging cycle received in the PEI may be defined as a time offset between the paging cycle in which the PEI is received and the paging cycle in which the UE starts using the paging cycle indicated by the additional information in the PEI.
[0074]
[0088] In some cases, the additional information related to the reception of paging information in the PEI may carry information that is normally carried on the paging PDCCH. Examples of information transmitted on the paging PDCCH are shown in Table 1.
[0075] [Table 1]
[0076]
[0089] Thus, for example, the additional information may include a short message indicator indicating whether the UE should receive paging information during one or more paging cycles, or short messages for one or more paging cycles, or both. In some cases, the additional information in the PEI may include a short message indicating whether the UE should receive updated system information or an Earthquake and Tsunami Warning System (ETWS) message. In some cases, the additional information in the PEI may include both a short message indicator and a short message, or may include a short message indicator and a portion of a short message.
[0077]
[0090] Examples of the short message indicator of the PEI and the information carried in the short message are shown below in Tables 2 and 3, respectively. The information shown below may be included in the additional information in the PEI.
[0078] [Table 2]
[0079] [Table 3]
[0080]
[0091] 8 shows a process 800 for wireless communications. By way of example, a UE (e.g., UE 104 in wireless communications network 100), or a portion thereof, may perform, or be configured, operable, or adapted to perform, the operations of process 800 for receiving additional information in a PEI. As another example, the operations of process 800 may be implemented as software components executed and running on one or more processors (e.g., controller / processor 280 of FIG. 2). Signals associated with the operations may be transmitted or received by the UE by one or more antennas (e.g., antenna 252 of FIG. 2) or via a bus interface of one or more processors (e.g., controller / processor 280) that acquire and / or output the signals.
[0081]
[0092] Process 800 begins at block 802 by determining a set of paging cycles for receiving paging information from a base station (BS).
[0082]
[0093] In block 804, the UE receives a Paging Early Indicator (PEI) from the BS. In some cases, the PEI includes an indication to the UE as to whether paging information will be transmitted during one or more paging cycles of the set of paging cycles. In some cases, the PEI also includes additional information related to receiving the paging information.
[0083]
[0094] At block 806, the UE receives paging information during one or more paging cycles indicated by the PEI.
[0084]
[0095] In some cases, the additional information related to the reception of the paging information includes an indication of a cycle length of one or more paging cycles for receiving the paging information, and the reception of the paging information is based on the indication of the cycle length.
[0085]
[0096] In some cases, the additional information related to receiving the paging information comprises a flag indicating one paging cycle of a default group for receiving the paging information. In this case, the UE may further receive signaling from the BS including configuration information configuring the paging cycle of the default group. In some cases, the signaling including the configuration information configuring the paging cycle of the default group is received in at least one of a system information block (SIB) or a radio resource control (RRC) release message. In some cases, receiving the paging information during one or more paging cycles comprises receiving the paging information during one paging cycle of the default group indicated by the flag.
[0086]
[0097] In some cases, the additional information related to receiving paging information comprises a short message indicator or a short message indicating whether the UE should receive paging information during one or more paging cycles. In some cases, the additional information related to receiving paging information comprises a short message. In some cases, the additional information related to receiving paging information comprises both a short message indicator and a short message. The short message may comprise an indication of whether the UE should receive updated system information or an Earthquake and Tsunami Warning System (ETWS) message.
[0087]
[0098] 9 shows a process 900 for wireless communications. By way of example, a BS (e.g., BS 102 in wireless communications network 100), or a portion thereof, may perform, or be configured, operable, or adapted to perform, the operations of process 900 that provide additional information in a PEI. As another example, the operations of process 900 may be implemented as software components that are executed and run on one or more processors (e.g., controller / processor 240 of FIG. 2). Signals associated with the operations may be transmitted or received by the BS by one or more antennas (e.g., antenna 234 of FIG. 2) or via a bus interface of one or more processors (e.g., controller / processor 240) that acquire and / or output the signals.
[0088]
[0099] Process 900 begins at block 902 by determining a set of paging cycles for transmitting paging information to a user equipment (UE).
[0089]
[0100] In block 904, the BS transmits a Paging Early Indicator (PEI) to the UE. In some cases, the PEI includes an indication to the UE as to whether paging information will be transmitted during one or more paging cycles of the set of paging cycles. In some cases, the PEI also includes additional information related to reception of the paging information.
[0090]
[0101] At block 906, the BS transmits paging information during one or more paging cycles indicated by the PEI.
[0091]
[0102] In some cases, the additional information related to the reception of the paging information includes an indication of a cycle length of one or more paging cycles for receiving the paging information, and the reception of the paging information is based on the indication of the cycle length.
[0092]
[0103] In some cases, the additional information related to receiving the paging information comprises a flag indicating one paging cycle of a default group for receiving the paging information. In this case, the BS may further transmit signaling to the UE including configuration information configuring the paging cycle of the default group. In some cases, the signaling including the configuration information configuring the paging cycle of the default group is transmitted in at least one of a system information block (SIB) or a radio resource control (RRC) release message. In some cases, transmitting the paging information during one or more paging cycles comprises transmitting the paging information during one paging cycle of the default group indicated by the flag.
[0093]
[0104] In some cases, the additional information related to receiving paging information comprises a short message indicator or a short message indicating whether the UE receives paging information during one or more paging cycles.
[0094] Additional considerations for legacy paging and PEIs that indicate paging information is being sent
[0105] In some cases, when the BS transmits a PEI to the UE to indicate whether paging information is transmitted to the UE, the BS may or may not further indicate whether the paging information is transmitted via a legacy paging PDCCH and a legacy paging PDSCH. There are advantages to using or not using the legacy approach. For example, when legacy paging is not used, the BS can save more signaling and power overhead. When legacy paging is used, such paging may increase the robustness of the paging signaling.
[0095]
[0106] In some cases, when the PEI is transmitted, the UE may need to determine whether to expect transmission of a conventional paging PDCCH and / or a legacy paging PDSCH. For example, in some cases, the UE may determine a set of paging cycles for receiving paging information from the BS. The UE may then receive a PEI from the BS indicating whether the UE should receive paging information during one or more paging cycles of the set of paging cycles. In some cases, the PEI may provide an explicit or implicit indication related to at least one of the legacy paging PDCCH or the legacy paging PDSCH. In some cases, the legacy paging PDCCH may comprise DCI format 1_0 scrambled by a paging radio network temporary identifier (P-RNTI). In some cases, the legacy paging PDSCH is a PDSCH scheduled by the legacy paging PDCCH.
[0096]
[0107] Thereafter, in some cases, the UE may take one or more actions based on the indication related to at least one of the legacy PDCCH or the legacy PDSCH. For example, in some cases, taking the one or more actions comprises monitoring for and receiving at least one of the legacy paging PDCCH or the legacy paging PDSCH during one or more paging cycles based on the indication related to at least one of the legacy paging PDCCH or the legacy paging PDSCH. Alternatively, in some cases, taking the one or more actions comprises refraining from monitoring for at least one of the legacy paging PDCCH or the legacy paging PDSCH during one or more paging cycles based on the indication related to at least one of the legacy paging PDCCH or the legacy paging PDSCH.
[0097]
[0108] More specifically, in some cases, if the PEI indicates that paging information will not be transmitted during one or more paging cycles, the BS may refrain from transmitting a legacy paging PDCCH and / or a legacy paging PDSCH during one or more paging cycles. In this case, the PEI may provide an explicit indication to the UE that the BS should not expect to transmit a legacy paging PDCCH and / or a legacy paging PDSCH during one or more paging cycles (e.g., to indicate that paging information will be transmitted to the UE during one or more paging cycles). Furthermore, in such cases, the UE may refrain from monitoring for a legacy PDCCH during one or more paging cycles indicated by the PEI based on the explicit indication related to the legacy PDCCH.
[0098]
[0109] Alternatively, the BS may still transmit a legacy paging PDCCH or a legacy paging PDSCH during one or more paging cycles to indicate that paging information is transmitted during the one or more paging cycles. In this case, the PEI may provide an explicit indication to the UE to expect the BS to transmit a legacy paging PDCCH or a legacy paging PDSCH during one or more paging cycles to indicate that paging information is transmitted to the UE during the one or more paging cycles. Furthermore, in such a case, the UE may monitor for a legacy PDCCH and / or a legacy paging PDSCH during one or more paging cycles indicated by the PEI based on the indication related to the legacy PDCCH and / or the legacy paging PDSCH.
[0099]
[0110] In some cases, the PEI provides an implicit indication related to at least one of the legacy paging PDCCH or the legacy paging PDSCH (rather than an explicit indication carried within the PEI itself) based on configuration information transmitted by the BS to the UE indicating how to interpret an indication related to at least one of the legacy paging PDCCH or the legacy paging PDSCH. In other words, the BS may transmit configuration information to the UE indicating that when a PEI indicating that paging information is transmitted during one or more paging cycles is received, the UE should implicitly expect that the legacy paging PDCCH or the legacy paging PDSCH will also be transmitted during one or more paging cycles, or that the UE should not implicitly expect that the legacy paging PDCCH or the legacy paging PDSCH will be transmitted during one or more paging cycles. In some cases, the BS may transmit the configuration information to the UE in at least one of paging configuration information, an SIB, an RRC release message, or a PEI.
[0100]
[0111] In some cases, whether the UE should expect to receive a legacy paging PDCCH and / or a legacy paging PDSCH during one or more paging cycles indicated by the PEI may depend on additional information included in the PEI (e.g., as described above in connection with FIGS. 8 and 9). For example, in some cases, if the PEI includes additional information, such as information typically included in a legacy paging PDCCH, or if the additional information indicates that the network will not transmit a legacy paging PDCCH, the UE may not expect to receive a legacy paging PDCCH during one or more paging cycles indicated by the PEI. In other cases, if the PEI does not include this additional information, or if the additional information indicates that the network will transmit a legacy paging PDCCH, the UE may expect to receive a legacy paging PDCCH during one or more paging cycles indicated by the PEI.
[0101]
[0112] 10 illustrates a process 1000 for wireless communications. As an example, a UE (e.g., UE 104 in wireless communications network 100), or a portion thereof, may perform, or be configured, operable, or adapted to perform, the operations of process 1000 for determining whether to receive a legacy paging PDCCH and / or a legacy paging PDSCH in response to a PEI. As another example, the operations of process 1000 may be implemented as software components executed and running on one or more processors (e.g., controller / processor 280 of FIG. 2). Signals associated with the operations may be transmitted or received by the UE by one or more antennas (e.g., antenna 252 of FIG. 2) or via a bus interface of one or more processors (e.g., controller / processor 280) that acquire and / or output the signals.
[0102]
[0113] Process 1000 begins at block 1002 by determining a set of paging cycles for receiving paging information from a base station (BS).
[0103]
[0114] In block 1004, the UE receives a paging early indicator (PEI) from the BS indicating whether the UE should receive paging information during one or more paging cycles of the set of paging cycles. In some cases, the PEI provides an indication related to at least one of a legacy paging physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) or a legacy paging physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH).
[0104]
[0115] At block 1006, the UE takes one or more actions based on the indication related to at least one of the legacy PDCCH or the legacy PDSCH.
[0105]
[0116] In some cases, the PEI provides an indication related to a legacy paging PDCCH. Further, in some examples, the indication related to the legacy paging PDCCH indicates to the UE that a legacy paging PDCCH will not be transmitted during one or more paging cycles indicated by the PEI. In such cases, taking the one or more actions comprises monitoring for a legacy PDCCH and refraining from receiving the legacy PDCCH during one or more paging cycles indicated by the PEI based on the indication related to the legacy PDCCH.
[0106]
[0117] In some cases, the PEI provides an indication related to a legacy paging PDCCH, where the indication related to the legacy paging PDCCH indicates to the UE that a legacy paging PDCCH will be transmitted during one or more paging cycles indicated by the PEI, in which case performing the one or more actions comprises monitoring for and receiving a legacy paging PDCCH during one or more paging cycles indicated by the PEI based on the indication related to the legacy paging PDCCH.
[0107]
[0118] In some cases, the PEI provides an indication related to at least one of the legacy paging PDCCH or the legacy paging PDSCH based on configuration information transmitted to the UE indicating how to interpret the indication related to at least one of the legacy paging PDCCH or the legacy paging PDSCH. The UE may receive the configuration information from the BS in at least one of paging configuration information, a system information block (SIB), a radio resource control (RRC) release message, or the PEI.
[0108]
[0119] In some cases, taking the one or more actions comprises monitoring for and receiving at least one of a legacy paging PDCCH or a legacy paging PDSCH during one or more paging cycles based on an indication related to at least one of a legacy paging PDCCH or a legacy paging PDSCH. In other cases, taking the one or more actions comprises refraining from monitoring for at least one of a legacy paging PDCCH or a legacy paging PDSCH during one or more paging cycles based on an indication related to at least one of a legacy paging PDCCH or a legacy paging PDSCH.
[0109]
[0120] 11 illustrates a process 1100 for wireless communications. As an example, a BS (e.g., BS 102 in wireless communications network 100), or a portion thereof, may perform, or be configured, operable, or adapted to perform, the operations of process 1100 for determining whether to transmit a legacy paging PDCCH or a legacy paging PDSCH in response to a PEI. As another example, the operations of process 1100 may be implemented as software components executing and running on one or more processors (e.g., controller / processor 240 of FIG. 2). Signals associated with the operations may be transmitted or received by the BS by one or more antennas (e.g., antenna 234 of FIG. 2) or via a bus interface of one or more processors (e.g., controller / processor 240) that acquire and / or output the signals.
[0110]
[0121] Process 1100 begins at block 1102 by determining a set of paging cycles for transmitting paging information to a user equipment (UE).
[0111]
[0122] In block 1104, the BS transmits a paging early indicator (PEI) to the UE indicating whether the UE should receive paging information during one or more paging cycles of the set of paging cycles. In some cases, the PEI provides an indication related to at least one of a legacy paging physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) or a legacy paging physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH).
[0112]
[0123] In some cases, the PEI provides an indication related to a legacy paging PDCCH, which indicates to the UE that the legacy paging PDCCH will not be transmitted during one or more paging cycles indicated by the PEI. In such cases, the BS may refrain from transmitting the legacy PDCCH during one or more paging cycles indicated by the PEI based on the indication related to the legacy PDCCH.
[0113]
[0124] In some cases, the PEI provides an indication related to a legacy paging PDCCH, and the indication related to the legacy paging PDCCH indicates to the UE that the legacy paging PDCCH will be transmitted during one or more paging cycles indicated by the PEI. Therefore, in this case, the BS may further transmit the legacy PDCCH during one or more paging cycles indicated by the PEI based on the indication related to the legacy PDCCH.
[0114]
[0125] In some cases, the PEI provides an indication related to at least one of the legacy paging PDCCH or the legacy paging PDSCH based on configuration information transmitted to the UE indicating how to interpret the indication related to at least one of the legacy paging PDCCH or the legacy paging PDSCH. The BS may transmit the configuration information to the UE in at least one of paging configuration information, a system information block (SIB), a radio resource control (RRC) release message, or the PEI.
[0115]
[0126] In some cases, the BS transmits at least one of the legacy paging PDCCH or the legacy paging PDSCH during one or more paging cycles based on an indication related to at least one of the legacy paging PDCCH or the legacy paging PDSCH. In other cases, the BS may refrain from transmitting at least one of the legacy paging PDCCH or the legacy paging PDSCH during one or more paging cycles based on an indication related to at least one of the legacy paging PDCCH or the legacy paging PDSCH.
[0116] Additional considerations for legacy paging and PEIs that indicate no paging information is sent
[0127] In some cases, when the BS sends a PEI to a UE (which may be in an idle or inactive mode, for example) indicating that no paging information will be sent to the UE during one or more paging cycles, or when the UE does not receive a PEI for those one or more paging cycles, the UE may decide to receive a legacy paging PDCCH or to refrain from receiving the legacy paging PDCCH. In some cases, the UE may be able to save power by refraining from receiving the legacy paging PDCCH.
[0117]
[0128] Thus, for example, in some cases, a UE may determine a set of paging cycles for receiving paging information from a base station (BS). Further, the UE may detect at least one of a PEI indicating that paging information will not be transmitted during one or more paging cycles of the set of paging cycles or that a PEI has not been received for one or more paging cycles of the set of paging cycles. The UE, which may be in an idle or inactive mode, may then take one or more actions related to a legacy paging PDCCH based on this detection.
[0118]
[0129] For example, in some cases, taking the one or more actions may comprise receiving a legacy paging PDCCH in a downlink control format 1_0 message during one or more paging cycles of the set of paging cycles, and in other cases, taking the one or more actions may comprise refraining from receiving a legacy paging PDCCH during one or more paging cycles of the set of paging cycles.
[0119]
[0130] In some cases, whether a UE receives the legacy paging PDCCH or determines not to receive the legacy paging PDCCH (e.g., in response to detecting a PEI indicating that paging information will not be transmitted during one or more paging cycles or in response to not detecting a PEI for the one or more paging cycles) may be based on configuration information received from the base station indicating one or more actions to take related to the legacy paging PDCCH. In some cases, the configuration information may be received in at least one of a system information block (SIB), paging configuration information, a radio resource control (RRC) release message, or a PEI. In some cases, if received in a SIB, the configuration information may semi-statically configure the UE to either receive the legacy PDCCH or refrain from receiving the legacy PDCCH. In some cases, if received in a PEI, the PEI may dynamically configure the UE with configuration information regarding whether to receive the legacy PDCCH or refrain from receiving the legacy PDCCH.
[0120]
[0131] 12 illustrates a process 1200 for wireless communications. As an example, a UE (e.g., UE 104 in wireless communications network 100), or a portion thereof, may perform, or be configured, operable, or adapted to perform, the operations of process 1200 for determining whether to receive a legacy paging PDCCH or a legacy paging PDSCH in response to a PEI. As another example, the operations of process 1200 may be implemented as software components executed and running on one or more processors (e.g., controller / processor 280 of FIG. 2). Signals associated with the operations may be transmitted or received by the UE by one or more antennas (e.g., antenna 252 of FIG. 2) or via a bus interface of one or more processors (e.g., controller / processor 280) that acquire and / or output the signals.
[0121]
[0132] Process 1200 begins at block 1202 by determining a set of paging cycles for receiving paging information from a base station (BS).
[0122]
[0133] In block 1204, the UE detects at least one of a paging early indicator (PEI) indicating that paging information will not be transmitted during one or more paging cycles of the set of paging cycles, or that a PEI for one or more paging cycles of the set of paging cycles has not been received.
[0123]
[0134] In block 1206, the UE takes one or more actions related to a legacy paging physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) based on the detection.
[0124]
[0135] In some cases, taking the one or more actions comprises receiving a legacy paging PDCCH in a downlink control format 1_0 message during one or more paging cycles of the set of paging cycles. In other cases, taking the one or more actions comprises refraining from receiving a legacy paging PDCCH during one or more paging cycles of the set of paging cycles.
[0125]
[0136] Further, in some cases, taking one or more actions related to the legacy paging PDCCH is based on configuration information received from the base station indicating one or more actions to take related to the legacy paging PDCCH. The configuration information may be received in at least one of a system information block (SIB), paging configuration information, a radio resource control (RRC) release message, or a PEI.

[0288] Additional Wireless Communication Network Considerations
[0299] The techniques and methods described herein may be used in a variety of wireless communication networks (or wireless wide area networks (WWANs)) and radio access technologies (RATs). Although aspects may be described herein using terminology generally associated with 3G, 4G, and / or 5G (e.g., 5G New Radio (NR)) wireless technologies, aspects of the present disclosure may be equally applicable to other communication systems and standards not explicitly mentioned herein.
[0289]
[0300] 5G wireless communication networks may support a variety of advanced wireless communication services, such as enhanced mobile broadband (eMMB), millimeter wave (mmW), machine type communications (MTC), and / or mission-critical targeted ultra-reliable low latency communications (URLLC), which may have latency and reliability requirements.
[0290]
[0301] Returning to FIG. 1, various aspects of the present disclosure may be performed within an exemplary wireless communication network 100.
[0291]
[0302] In 3GPP, the term "cell" can refer to the coverage area of a Node B (NB) and / or the NB subsystem serving this coverage area, depending on the context in which the term is used. In an NR system, the terms "cell" and BS, next-generation Node B (gNB or gNodeB), access point (AP), distributed unit (DU), carrier, or transmit / receive point (TRP) may be used interchangeably. A BS may provide communication coverage for a macrocell, picocell, femtocell, and / or other types of cell.
[0292]
[0303] A macrocell may generally cover a relatively large geographic area (e.g., a radius of several kilometers) and may provide unrestricted access to UEs with service subscriptions. A picocell may cover a relatively small geographic area and may provide unrestricted access to UEs with service subscriptions. A femtocell may cover a relatively small geographic area (e.g., a home) and may provide restricted access to UEs associated with the femtocell (e.g., UEs in a Closed Subscriber Group (CSG), UEs of home users, etc.). A BS in a macrocell may be referred to as a macro BS. A BS in a picocell may be referred to as a pico BS. A BS in a femtocell may be referred to as a femto BS or a home BS.
[0293]
[0304] Base stations 102 configured for 4G LTE (collectively referred to as Evolved Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) Terrestrial Radio Access Network (E-UTRAN)) may interface with the EPC 160 through a first backhaul link 132 (e.g., an S1 interface). Base stations 102 configured for 5G (e.g., 5G NR or Next Generation RAN (NG-RAN)) may interface with the core network 190 through a second backhaul link 184. The base stations 102 may communicate with each other directly or indirectly (e.g., through the EPC 160 or the core network 190) through a third backhaul link 134 (e.g., an X2 interface). The third backhaul link 134 may generally be wired or wireless.
[0294]
[0305] The small cell 102' may operate in licensed and / or unlicensed frequency bands. When operating in unlicensed frequency bands, the small cell 102' may utilize NR and use the same 5 GHz unlicensed frequency band used by Wi-Fi APs 150. A small cell 102' utilizing NR in unlicensed frequency bands may increase coverage and / or increase the capacity of the access network.
[0295]
[0306] Some base stations, such as the gNB 180, may operate in conventional sub-6 GHz bands, millimeter wave (mmW) frequencies, and / or near-mmW frequencies in communication with the UE 104. When the gNB 180 operates in mmW or near-mmW frequencies, the gNB 180 may be referred to as an mmW base station.
[0296]
[0307] The communication link 120 between the base station 102 and, for example, the UE 104 may be via one or more carriers. For example, the base station 102 and the UE 104 may use a bandwidth per carrier of up to Y MHz (e.g., 5, 10, 15, 20, 100, 400 MHz, etc.) allocated in a carrier aggregation manner, resulting in up to Yx MHz (x component carriers) of total frequency used for transmission in each direction. The carriers may or may not be adjacent to each other. The carrier allocation may be asymmetric between DL and UL (e.g., more or fewer carriers may be allocated to DL than to UL). The component carriers may include a primary component carrier and one or more secondary component carriers. The primary component carrier may also be referred to as a primary cell (PCell), and the secondary component carrier may also be referred to as a secondary cell (SCell).
[0297]
[0308] The wireless communication system 100 further includes a Wi-Fi access point (AP) 150 in communication with a Wi-Fi station (STA) 152 via a communication link 154, for example, in the 2.4 GHz unlicensed frequency band and / or the 5 GHz unlicensed frequency band. When communicating in the unlicensed frequency band, the STA 152 / AP 150 may perform clear channel assessment (CCA) before communicating to determine whether the channel is available.
[0298]
[0309] Particular UEs 104 may communicate with each other using device-to-device (D2D) communication links 158. The D2D communication links 158 may use DL / UL WWAN bands. The D2D communication links 158 may use one or more sidelink channels, such as a physical sidelink broadcast channel (PSBCH), a physical sidelink discovery channel (PSDCH), a physical sidelink shared channel (PSSCH), and a physical sidelink control channel (PSCCH). The D2D communication may be over various wireless D2D communication systems, such as FlashLinQ, WiMedia, Bluetooth, ZigBee, Wi-Fi based on the IEEE 802.11 standard, 4G (e.g., LTE), or 5G (e.g., NR), to name a few options.
[0299]
[0310] The EPC 160 may include a Mobility Management Entity (MME) 162, other MMEs 164, a Serving Gateway 166, a Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (MBMS) Gateway 168, a Broadcast Multicast Service Center (BM-SC) 170, and a Packet Data Network (PDN) Gateway 172. The MME 162 may be in communication with a Home Subscriber Server (HSS) 174. The MME 162 is a control node that handles signaling between the UE 104 and the EPC 160. Generally, the MME 162 provides bearer and connection management.
[0300]
[0311] Generally, user Internet Protocol (IP) packets are forwarded through a serving gateway 166, which itself is connected to a PDN gateway 172. The PDN gateway 172 provides IP address allocation and other functions for the UE. The PDN gateway 172 and the BM-SC 170 are connected to IP services 176, which may include, for example, the Internet, an intranet, an IP multimedia subsystem (IMS), PS streaming services, and / or other IP services.
[0301]
[0312] The BM-SC 170 provides functionality for the provisioning and delivery of MBMS user services. The BM-SC 170 may serve as an entry point for content providers' MBMS transmissions, may be used to authorize and start MBMS bearer services within a public land mobile network (PLMN), and may be used to schedule MBMS transmissions. The MBMS gateway 168 may be used to distribute MBMS traffic to base stations 102 belonging to a multicast broadcast single frequency network (MBSFN) area broadcasting a particular service, and may be responsible for session management (start / stop) and collection of charging information related to eMBMS.
[0302]
[0313] The core network 190 may include an Access and Mobility Management Function (AMF) 192, other AMFs 193, a Session Management Function (SMF) 194, and a User Plane Function (UPF) 195. The AMF 192 may be in communication with a Unified Data Management (UDM) 196.
[0303]
[0314] The AMF 192 is generally a control node that handles signaling between the UE 104 and the core network 190. Generally, the AMF 192 provides QoS flow and session management.
[0304]
[0315] All user Internet Protocol (IP) packets are forwarded through UPF 195, which provides IP address allocation and other functions for UEs connected to IP services 197 to core network 190. IP services 197 may include, for example, the Internet, an intranet, IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), PS streaming services, and / or other IP services.
[0305]
[0316] Turning back to FIG. 2, various exemplary components of a BS 102 and a UE 104 (e.g., wireless communication network 100 of FIG. 1) that may be used to implement aspects of the present disclosure are shown.
[0306]
[0317] At BS 102, transmit processor 220 may receive data from data source 212 and control information from controller / processor 240. The control information may be for a Physical Broadcast Channel (PBCH), a Physical Control Format Indicator Channel (PCFICH), a Physical Hybrid ARQ Indicator Channel (PHICH), a Physical Downlink Control Channel (PDCCH), a Group Common PDCCH (GC PDCCH), etc. The data may be for a Physical Downlink Shared Channel (PDSCH), etc.
[0307]
[0318] A Medium Access Control (MAC) Control Element (MAC-CE) is a MAC layer communication structure that may be used to exchange control commands between wireless nodes. The MAC-CE may be carried on a shared channel such as a Physical Downlink Shared Channel (PDSCH), a Physical Uplink Shared Channel (PUSCH), or a Physical Sidelink Shared Channel (PSSCH).
[0308]
[0319] The processor 220 processes (e.g., encodes and symbol maps) the data and control information to obtain data symbols and control symbols, respectively. The transmit processor 220 may also generate reference symbols, such as those for a primary synchronization signal (PSS), a secondary synchronization signal (SSS), a PBCH demodulation reference signal (DMRS), and a channel state information reference signal (CSI-RS).
[0309]
[0320] The transmit (TX) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) processor 230 may perform spatial processing (e.g., precoding) on the data symbols, control symbols, and / or reference symbols, if applicable, and may provide output symbol streams to modulators (MODs) in transceivers 232a through 232t. Each modulator in transceivers 232a through 232t may process a respective output symbol stream (e.g., for OFDM, etc.) to obtain an output sample stream. Each modulator may further process (e.g., convert to analog, amplify, filter, upconvert, etc.) the output sample stream to obtain a downlink signal. The downlink signals from the modulators in transceivers 232a through 232t may be transmitted via antennas 234a through 234t, respectively.
[0310]
[0321] At the UE 104, the antennas 252a through 252r may receive downlink signals from the BS 102 and may provide received signals to demodulators (DEMODs) within the transceivers 254a through 254r, respectively. Each demodulator within the transceivers 254a through 254r may condition (e.g., filter, amplify, downconvert, and digitize) its respective received signal to obtain input samples. Each demodulator may further process the input samples (e.g., for OFDM, etc.) to obtain received symbols.
[0311]
[0322] A MIMO detector 256 may obtain received symbols from all demodulators in transceivers 254a-254r, perform MIMO detection on the received symbols if applicable, and provide detected symbols. A receive processor 258 may process (e.g., demodulate, deinterleave, and decode) the detected symbols and provide decoded data for the UE 104 to a data sink 260 and decoded control information to a controller / processor 280.
[0312]
[0323] On the uplink, at the UE 104, a transmit processor 264 may receive and process data (e.g., for a physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH)) from a data source 262 and control information (e.g., for a physical uplink control information (PUCCH)) from a controller / processor 280. The transmit processor 264 may also generate reference symbols for a reference signal (e.g., a sounding reference signal (SRS)). The symbols from the transmit processor 264 may be precoded by a TX MIMO processor 266 if applicable, further processed by a modulator in the transceivers 254a-254r (e.g., for SC-FDM, etc.), and transmitted to the BS 102.
[0313]
[0324] At the BS 102, uplink signals from the UEs 104 may be received by antennas 234a-234t, processed by demodulators in transceivers 232a-232t, detected by a MIMO detector if applicable, and further processed by a receive processor 238 to obtain decoded data and control information transmitted by the UEs 104. The receive processor 238 may provide the decoded data to a data sink 239 and the decoded control information to a controller / processor 240.
[0314]
[0325] Memories 242 and 282 may store data and program codes for BS 102 and UE 104, respectively.
[0315]
[0326] The scheduler 244 may schedule UEs for data transmission on the downlink and / or uplink.
[0316]
[0327] Antenna 252, processors 266, 258, 264, and / or controller / processor 280 of UE 104 and / or antenna 234, processors 220, 230, 238, and / or controller / processor 240 of BS 102 may be used to perform the various techniques and methods described herein.
[0317]
[0328] For example, as shown in Figure 2, the controller / processor 240 of the BS 102 has a paging early indication (PEI) component 241 that may be configured to perform one or more of the operations of Figures 6, 9, and 11, as well as other operations described herein for PEI-based paging. As shown in Figure 2, the controller / processor 280 of the UE 104 has a PEI component 281 that may be configured to perform one or more of the operations of Figures 5, 8, 10, and 12, as well as other operations described herein for PEI-based paging. Although shown with a controller / processor, other components of the UE 104 and the BS 102 may be used to perform the operations described herein.
[0318]
[0329] 5G may utilize orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) with a cyclic prefix (CP) on the uplink and downlink. 5G may also support half-duplex operation using time division duplexing (TDD). OFDM and single-carrier frequency division multiplexing (SC-FDM) divide the system bandwidth into multiple orthogonal subcarriers, commonly referred to as tones, bins, etc. Each subcarrier may be modulated with data. Modulation symbols may be sent in the frequency domain with OFDM and in the time domain with SC-FDM. The spacing between adjacent subcarriers may be fixed, and the total number of subcarriers may be determined by the system bandwidth. The minimum resource allocation, called a resource block (RB), may be 12 contiguous subcarriers in some examples. The system bandwidth may also be divided into subbands. For example, a subband may cover multiple RBs. NR may correspond to a basic subcarrier spacing (SCS) of 15 kHz, and other SCSs may be defined relative to the basic SCS (e.g., 30 kHz, 60 kHz, 120 kHz, 240 kHz, etc.).
[0319]
[0330] As noted above, FIGS. 3A-3D illustrate various exemplary aspects of data structures for a wireless communication network, such as wireless communication network 100 of FIG.
[0320]
[0331] In various aspects, the 5G frame structure may be frequency division duplexed (FDD) where, for a particular set of subcarriers (carrier system bandwidth), subframes within that set of subcarriers are dedicated to either DL or UL. The 5G frame structure may also be time division duplexed (TDD) where, for a particular set of subcarriers (carrier system bandwidth), subframes within that set of subcarriers are dedicated to both DL and UL. In the example provided in Figures 3A and 3C, the 5G frame structure is assumed to be TDD, subframe 4 is configured with slot format 28 (mostly DL), where D denotes DL, U denotes UL, and X denotes flexible use between DL / UL, and subframe 3 is configured with slot format 34 (mostly UL). While subframes 3 and 4 are shown with slot formats 34 and 28, respectively, any particular subframe may be configured with any of the various available slot formats 0-61. Slot format 0 is all DL, and slot format 1 is all UL. The other slot formats 2-61 include a mix of DL, UL, and flexible symbols. The UE is configured with the slot format through a received Slot Format Indicator (SFI) (either dynamically via DL Control Information (DCI) or semi-statically / statically via Radio Resource Control (RRC) signaling). Note that the following description also applies to the 5G frame structure, which is TDD.
[0321]
[0332] Other wireless communication technologies may have different frame structures and / or different channels. A frame (10 ms) may be divided into 10 equal-sized subframes (1 ms). Each subframe may include one or more time slots. A subframe may also include minislots, which may include 7, 4, or 2 symbols. In some examples, each slot may include 7 or 14 symbols, depending on the slot configuration.
[0322]
[0333] For example, in slot configuration 0, each slot may contain 14 symbols, and in slot configuration 1, each slot may contain 7 symbols. The symbols on the DL may be cyclic prefix (CP) OFDM (CP-OFDM) symbols. The symbols on the UL may be CP-OFDM symbols (for high-throughput scenarios) or discrete Fourier transform (DFT) spread OFDM (DFT-s-OFDM) symbols (also called single-carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) symbols) (for power-limited, i.e., single-stream transmission scenarios).
[0323]
[0334] The number of slots in a subframe is based on the slot configuration and numerology. In slot configuration 0, the different numerologies (μ) 0 to 5 allow for 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, and 32 slots per subframe, respectively. In slot configuration 1, the different numerologies 0 to 2 allow for 2, 4, and 8 slots per subframe, respectively. Therefore, for slot configuration 0 and numerology μ, there are 14 symbols per slot and 2μ slots per subframe. The subcarrier spacing and symbol length / duration are determined by the numerology. The subcarrier spacing is 2 μ The symbol length / duration can be equal to 15 kHz × 15 kHz, where μ is the numerology from 0 to 5. Thus, numerology μ=0 has a subcarrier spacing of 15 kHz, and numerology μ=5 has a subcarrier spacing of 480 kHz. The symbol length / duration is inversely related to the subcarrier spacing. Figures 3A-3D provide an example of slot configuration 0 with 14 symbols per slot and numerology μ=2 with 4 slots per subframe. The slot duration is 0.25 ms, the subcarrier spacing is 60 kHz, and the symbol duration is approximately 16.67 μs.
[0324]
[0335] A resource grid is sometimes used to represent the frame structure. Each time slot contains a resource block (RB) (also called a physical RB (PRB)) that spans 12 consecutive subcarriers. The resource grid is divided into multiple resource elements (RE). The number of bits carried by each RE depends on the modulation scheme.
[0325]
[0336] As shown in Figure 3A, some of the REs carry reference (pilot) signals (RSs) for the UE (e.g., the UE 104 in Figures 1 and 2). The RSs may include demodulation RSs (DM-RSs) (denoted as Rx in one particular configuration, where 100x is the port number, although other DM-RS configurations are possible) and channel state information reference signals (CSI-RSs) for channel estimation at the UE. The RSs may also include beam measurement RSs (BRSs), beam refinement RSs (BRRSs), and phase tracking RSs (PT-RSs).
[0326]
[0337] 3B shows an example of various DL channels within a subframe of a frame. The Physical Downlink Control Channel (PDCCH) carries DCI within one or more Control Channel Elements (CCEs), each of which contains nine RE groups (REGs), and each REG contains four consecutive REs of an OFDM symbol.
[0327]
[0338] A primary synchronization signal (PSS) may be within symbol 2 of a particular subframe of a frame. The PSS is used by the UE (e.g., 104 in Figures 1 and 2) to determine subframe / symbol timing and physical layer identification.
[0328]
[0339] The secondary synchronization signal (SSS) may be within symbol 4 of a particular subframe of a frame. The SSS is used by the UE to determine the physical layer cell identity group number and radio frame timing.
[0329]
[0340] Based on the physical layer identification and the physical layer cell identification group number, the UE can determine the physical cell identifier (PCI). Based on the PCI, the UE can determine the location of the aforementioned DM-RS. The physical broadcast channel (PBCH), which carries the master information block (MIB), may be logically grouped with the PSS and SSS to form a synchronization signal (SS) / PBCH block. The MIB provides the number of RBs in the system bandwidth and the system frame number (SFN). The physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) carries user data, broadcast system information not transmitted over the PBCH, such as the system information block (SIB), and paging messages.
[0330]
[0341] As shown in FIG. 3C , some of the REs carry DM-RS (denoted as R in one particular configuration, although other DM-RS configurations are possible) for channel estimation at the base station. The UE may transmit DM-RS for the physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) and DM-RS for the physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH). The PUSCH DM-RS may be transmitted in the first one or two symbols of the PUSCH. The PUCCH DM-RS may be transmitted in different configurations depending on whether a short or long PUCCH is transmitted and the particular PUCCH format used. The UE may transmit a sounding reference signal (SRS). The SRS may be transmitted in the last symbol of a subframe. The SRS may have a comb structure, and the UE may transmit the SRS in one of the combs. The SRS may be used by the base station for channel quality estimation to enable frequency-dependent scheduling on the UL.
[0331]
[0342] 3D illustrates an example of various UL channels within a subframe of a frame. The PUCCH may be located as shown in one configuration. The PUCCH carries uplink control information (UCI) such as scheduling requests, channel quality indicators (CQIs), precoding matrix indicators (PMIs), rank indicators (RIs), and HARQ ACK / NACK feedback. The PUSCH carries data and may be further used to carry buffer status reports (BSRs), power headroom reports (PHRs), and / or UCIs.
[0332] Additional Considerations
[0343] The above description provides examples of paging based on a Paging Early Indication (PEI) in a communication system. Changes may be made in the functionality and arrangement of the described elements without departing from the present disclosure. Various examples may omit, substitute, or add various procedures or components as appropriate. For example, the described methods may be performed in an order different from that described, and various steps may be added, omitted, or combined. Also, features described in connection with some examples may be combined in some other examples. For example, an apparatus may be implemented or a method may be practiced using any number of the aspects described herein. Furthermore, the present disclosure is intended to cover such apparatuses or methods implemented using other structure, functions, or structure and functions in addition to or other than the various aspects of the present disclosure described herein. It should be understood that any aspect of the present disclosure disclosed herein may be embodied by one or more elements of a claim. The word "exemplary" is used herein to mean "serving as an example, instance, or illustration." Any aspect described herein as "exemplary" is not necessarily to be construed as preferred or advantageous over other aspects.
[0333]
[0344] The technologies described herein may be used for various wireless communication technologies, such as 5G (e.g., 5G NR), 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE), LTE-Advanced (LTE-A), code division multiple access (CDMA), time division multiple access (TDMA), frequency division multiple access (FDMA), orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA), single-carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA), time division synchronous code division multiple access (TD-SCDMA), and other networks. The terms "network" and "system" are often used interchangeably. A CDMA network may implement radio technologies such as Universal Terrestrial Radio Access (UTRA), cdma2000, and the like. UTRA includes Wideband CDMA (WCDMA) and other CDMA variants. cdma2000 covers IS-2000, IS-95, and IS-856 standards. A TDMA network may implement radio technologies such as Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM). UTRA and E-UTRA are parts of the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS). LTE and LTE-A are releases of UMTS that use E-UTRA. UTRA, E-UTRA, UMTS, LTE, LTE-A, and GSM are described in documents from an organization named "3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP)." cdma2000 and UMB are described in documents from an organization named "3rd Generation Partnership Project 2 (3GPP2)." NR is a new wireless communications technology under development.
[0334]
[0345] In some examples, access to the air interface may be scheduled. A scheduling entity (e.g., a BS) allocates resources for communication among some or all devices and equipment within its service region or cell. The scheduling entity may be responsible for scheduling, allocating, reconfiguring, and releasing resources for one or more subordinate entities. That is, for scheduled communication, the subordinate entities utilize the resources allocated by the scheduling entity. A base station is not the only entity that may function as a scheduling entity. In some examples, a UE may function as a scheduling entity and schedule resources for one or more subordinate entities (e.g., one or more other UEs), and the other UEs may utilize the resources scheduled by the UE for wireless communication. In some examples, a UE may function as a scheduling entity in a peer-to-peer (P2P) network and / or a mesh network. In the example of a mesh network, UEs may communicate directly with each other in addition to communicating with the scheduling entity.
[0335]
[0346] The methods disclosed herein comprise one or more steps or actions for achieving those methods. The method steps and / or actions may be interchanged with one another. In other words, unless a specific order of steps or actions is specified, the order and / or use of specific steps and / or actions may be modified.
[0336]
[0347] As used herein, the phrase "at least one" of a list of items refers to any combination of those items, including the individual components. For example, "at least one of a, b, or c" is intended to cover a, b, c, ab, ac, bc, and abc, as well as any combination of multiples of the same element (e.g., aa, aaa, aab, aac, abb, acc, bb, bbb, bbc, cc, and ccc, or any other permutation of a, b, and c).
[0337]
[0348] As used herein, the term "determining" includes a wide variety of actions. For example, "determining" can include calculating, computing, processing, deriving, investigating, looking up (e.g., looking up in a table, database, or another data structure), and ascertaining, etc. "Determining" can also include receiving (e.g., receiving information) and accessing (e.g., accessing data in a memory), etc. "Determining" can also include solving, selecting, choosing, establishing, etc.
[0338]
[0349] Reference to an element in the singular is not intended to mean "one and only one" unless specifically stated otherwise, but rather "one or more." The term "some" also refers to one or more unless specifically stated otherwise. All structural and functional equivalents of the elements of the various aspects described throughout this disclosure that are known or later become known to those of ordinary skill in the art are expressly incorporated herein by reference and are intended to be encompassed by the claims. Furthermore, nothing disclosed herein is intended to be made available to the public, regardless of whether the disclosure is expressly recited in the claims. A claim element shall not be construed under 35 U.S.C. §112(f) unless the element is expressly recited using the phrase "means for" or, in the case of a method claim, the element is recited using the phrase "step for."
[0339]
[0350] The various operations of the methods described above may be performed by any suitable means capable of performing the corresponding functions, which may include various hardware and / or software components and / or modules, such as, but not limited to, circuits, digital signal processors (DSPs), application specific integrated circuits (ASICs), or processors (e.g., general-purpose or specially programmed processors).
[0340]
[0351] The various illustrative logic blocks, modules, and circuits described in connection with this disclosure may be implemented or performed by a general-purpose processor, a DSP, an ASIC, a field programmable gate array (FPGA) or other programmable logic device (PLD), discrete gate or transistor logic, discrete hardware components, or any combination thereof, designed to perform the functions described herein. A general-purpose processor may be a microprocessor, but in the alternative, the processor may be any commercially available processor, controller, microcontroller, or state machine. A processor may also be implemented as a combination of computing devices, such as a DSP and a microprocessor, multiple microprocessors, one or more microprocessors in conjunction with a DSP core, a system-on-a-chip (SoC), or any other such configuration.
[0341]
[0352] When implemented in hardware, an exemplary hardware configuration may comprise a processing system in a wireless node. The processing system may be implemented with a bus architecture. The bus may include any number of interconnected buses and bridges, depending on the particular application and overall design constraints of the processing system. The bus may link various circuits, including a processor, a machine-readable medium, and a bus interface. The bus interface may be used, among other things, to connect a network adapter to the processing system via the bus. The network adapter may be used to perform PHY layer signal processing functions. In the case of user equipment (see FIG. 1 ), user interfaces (e.g., keypads, displays, mice, joysticks, touchscreens, biometric sensors, proximity sensors, light-emitting elements, etc.) may also be connected to the bus. The bus may also link various other circuits, such as timing sources, peripherals, voltage regulators, and power management circuits, which are well known in the art and therefore will not be described further. The processor may be implemented with one or more general-purpose and / or special-purpose processors. Examples include microprocessors, microcontrollers, DSP processors, and other circuits capable of executing software. Those skilled in the art will recognize how to best implement the described functionality of a processing system depending on the particular application and the overall design constraints imposed on the entire system.
[0342]
[0353] If implemented in software, the functions may be stored on or transmitted as one or more instructions or code on a computer-readable medium. Software shall be broadly construed to mean instructions, data, or any combination thereof, whether referred to as software, firmware, middleware, microcode, hardware description language, or otherwise. Computer-readable media includes both computer storage media and communication media, including any medium that facilitates transfer of a computer program from one place to another. A processor may be responsible for general processing such as managing a bus and executing software modules stored on the machine-readable storage medium. The computer-readable storage medium may be coupled to the processor such that the processor can read information from and write information to the storage medium. In the alternative, the storage medium may be integral to the processor. By way of example, the machine-readable medium may include a transmission line, a carrier wave modulated by data, and / or a computer-readable storage medium on which instructions are stored separate from a wireless node, all of which may be accessed by the processor via a bus interface. Alternatively, or in addition, the machine-readable medium, or any portion thereof, may be integral to the processor, such as in the case of a cache and / or general-purpose register file. Examples of machine-readable storage media may include, by way of example, RAM (random access memory), flash memory, ROM (read-only memory), PROM (programmable read-only memory), EPROM (erasable programmable read-only memory), EEPROM (electrically erasable programmable read-only memory), registers, magnetic disks, optical disks, hard drives, or any other suitable storage medium, or any combination thereof. The machine-readable medium may also be embodied in a computer program product.
[0343]
[0354] A software module may comprise one instruction or many instructions and may be distributed across several different code segments, among different programs, and across multiple storage media. A computer-readable medium may comprise several software modules. A software module contains instructions that, when executed by a device such as a processor, cause a processing system to perform various functions. A software module may include a transmitting module and a receiving module. Each software module may reside in one storage device or may be distributed across multiple storage devices. As an example, a software module may be loaded into RAM from a hard drive when a trigger event occurs. During execution of a software module, a processor may load some of the instructions into a cache to increase access speed. One or more cache lines may then be loaded into a general-purpose register file for execution by the processor. When functionality of a software module is described below, it will be understood that such functionality is performed by the processor when executing instructions from that software module.
[0344]
[0355] Also, any connection is referred to as a computer-readable medium, as appropriate. For example, if software is transmitted from a website, a server, or other remote source using coaxial cable, fiber optic cable, twisted pair wire, digital subscriber line (DSL), or wireless technologies such as infrared (IR), radio, and microwave, the coaxial cable, fiber optic cable, twisted pair wire, DSL, or wireless technologies such as infrared, radio, and microwave are included within the definition of medium. As used herein, disk and disc include compact discs (CDs), laser discs, optical discs, digital versatile discs (DVDs), floppy discs, and Blu-ray discs, where disks typically reproduce data magnetically and discs reproduce data optically using lasers. Thus, in some aspects computer-readable medium may comprise non-transitory computer-readable medium (e.g., tangible media). Additionally, in other aspects, computer-readable medium may comprise transitory computer-readable medium (e.g., a signal). Combinations of the above can also be considered examples of computer-readable medium.
[0345]
[0356] Accordingly, certain aspects may comprise a computer program product for performing the operations presented herein. For example, such a computer program product may comprise a computer-readable medium having stored thereon (and / or encoded thereon) instructions executable by one or more processors to perform the operations described herein, such as, for example, instructions for performing the operations described herein and illustrated in Figures 5, 6, and 8-12.
[0346]
