AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Conventional rack-and-pinion steering devices face challenges in providing sufficient holding force in the width direction of the rack shaft while improving the strength of the rack teeth without increasing the weight of the rack shaft.

Method used

The proposed solution involves a rack-and-pinion steering device with a rack shaft having a D-shaped rack portion, a rolling type rack guide, and a D-shaped support hole in the rack bushing, which allows for improved holding force and strength without increasing the weight.

Benefits of technology

This configuration enhances the steering feel, improves the strength of the rack teeth, and ensures a holding force in the width direction of the rack shaft, while maintaining the lightweight design of the rack shaft.

Abstract

To provide a structure of a rack and pinion type steering device that can improve a steering feeling, and enhance intensity of a rack tooth without increasing weight of a rack shaft and yet secure holding force in a width direction of the rack shaft.SOLUTION: A rack shaft 12 is configured to have an assist-side rack part 33 having a nearly D-shape cross section outline shape in which an assist-side rack tooth 30 that engages with an assist-side pinion shaft 14 is formed and a shaft-like part having a circular cross section outline shape, where the assist-side rack part 33 has a width dimension larger than an outer diameter of the shaft-like part. The rack shaft 12 is pressed toward the assist-side pinion shaft 14 by a roll-type assist-side rack guide 39 comprising a roller 45. A support hole 57 which is a D-shape hole having a nearly D-shape outline shape, through which the assist-side rack part 33 can be inserted, is used as a rack bush 10b that supports the rack shaft 12.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
