AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Traditional video encoding methods for surveillance cameras encode entire image frames uniformly, leading to inefficient bandwidth usage and storage requirements, as they do not differentiate between 'interesting' and 'uninteresting' parts of the frame.

Method used

The method segments image frames into background and instance segments, classifies instance segments into interest and non-interest mobile objects, and encodes these segments differently, with high frame rates for interesting objects and low frame rates for uninteresting background areas.

Benefits of technology

This approach reduces bandwidth requirements by streaming only the most relevant information at high frame rates and less relevant information at lower frame rates, allowing for optimal visual quality and reduced storage needs.

Abstract

To provide methods, systems, and computer program products, for producing streams of image frames.SOLUTION: A method comprises: segmenting image frames in streaming video into background segments and instance segments composed of movable objects of interest and movable objects of non-interest; creating a background image frame that contains the background segments; and, when a movable object of non-interest has moved to reveal a background area, updating the background image frame to include the revealed background area. The method further comprises: creating a foreground image that contains the movable objects of interest; and producing a stream of encoded foreground image frames having at a first frame rate and a stream of encoded background image frames having a second frame rate that is lower than the first frame rate.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3
