Abstract
Description
[Technical Field]
[0001] The present disclosure relates to an oral pouch product comprising a liquid-permeable covering material and a unit-dose fill material comprising a water-insoluble particulate material, wherein the fill material is encapsulated in the liquid-permeable covering material. [Background technology]
[0002] The oral pouch-like products disclosed herein are intended for use in the oral cavity, for example, by placing the pouch-like product on the cheek, for example, by placing the pouch-like product between the upper or lower gums and the lips or cheek. The pouch-like smokeless tobacco product may also be referred to as an oral portion-pack smokeless tobacco product. The pouch-like product is typically sized and configured to fit comfortably and discreetly in the user's mouth, between the upper or lower gums and the lips or cheek.
[0003] Traditionally, oral pouches are used in the consumer's mouth to provide the user with the benefits of active substances, such as nicotine, caffeine, and / or various flavorings. A common type of nicotine-containing oral pouch is oral smokeless tobacco products. Such products usually contain water, salt, a pH adjuster, and additional ingredients, such as flavorings and humectants. These products are commonly referred to as snuff.
[0004] Tobacco-free or low-tobacco-containing oral pouch nicotine products are currently becoming increasingly popular among consumers, particularly due to their attractive appearance, freshness, and taste. Furthermore, this type of product allows users to enjoy nicotine without exposure to tobacco. Tobacco-free or low-tobacco-containing oral pouch products are typically flavored compositions containing a filler material, which may include, for example, microcrystalline cellulose or particles of fibrous material derived from plants other than tobacco.
[0005] Additional types of oral pouch products are those that deliver only flavors to the oral cavity and those that are designed to deliver active substances other than nicotine.
[0006] Tobacco-free oral pouch products are typically relatively dry products, having a moisture content prior to use of less than 35% by weight of the fill material, and often less than 20% by weight of the fill material. Oral pouch products having even lower moisture contents, such as 4-10% by weight of the fill material, are also known in the art.
[0007] Oral pouch products are typically used by consumers by placing the pouch between the upper or lower gum and the lip and maintaining it there for a limited period of time. The product is configured to fit comfortably and discreetly in the user's mouth. The pouch material holds the fill material in place and allows saliva to enter the fill material, allowing flavorings and active substances, such as nicotine, to diffuse from the fill material into the consumer's mouth.
[0008] It has been found that oral pouch products having a fill material consisting primarily of powdered or particulate material can be perceived by users as imparting an unpleasantly dry and gritty mouthfeel, particularly during the initial stages of use of such products. [0009] [Non-Patent Document 1] Federal Register / vol. 74, no. 4 / 712-719 / Wednesday, January 7, 2009 / Posting "Total moisture determination" [Non-patent document 2] AOAC (Association of Official Analytical Chemics), Official Methods of Analysis 966.02: "Moisture in Tobacco" (1990), 5th edition, K. Helrich (ed.) Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]
[0010] It is an object of the present disclosure to provide an oral pouch product containing a fill material that has improved properties, particularly with respect to initial mouthfeel and user satisfaction. [Means for solving the problem]
[0011] The above object can be achieved by an oral pouch product as claimed in claim 1. Variations of the present disclosure are set out in the dependent claims and the following description.
[0012] The oral pouch-shaped product disclosed herein comprises a liquid-permeable covering material and a filler material comprising one or more water-soluble ingredients and a water-insoluble particulate material, the water-insoluble particulate material being composed of water-insoluble particles, and the filler material being encapsulated in the liquid-permeable covering material. The particles of the water-insoluble particulate material have an average particle size in the range of 0.3 mm to 3.0 mm, and the water-insoluble particulate material comprises less than 0.5% of particles passing through a sieve with a mesh size of 250 μm. The filler material comprises one or more water-soluble ingredients. The liquid-permeable outer covering material is encapsulated in a liquid-permeable covering material having a density of 10 g / m. 2 ~28g / m 2 and the filler material is either free of tobacco material or contains tobacco material in an amount ranging from 0.05 wt% to 10 wt%, based on the total weight of the filler material.
[0013] A mesh size of 250 μm corresponds to the particle size of small to medium-sized sand particles, which can be extremely unpleasant if they leak from the coating material into the user's mouth, especially if the particles are insoluble, as they create a gritty, dry mouthfeel that can linger long after the product has been placed in the mouth.
[0014] Small particles and fines in the fill material can also cause dusting problems during the manufacture of oral pouch products, as they can prevent the formation of seals and cause clogging of mechanical parts. It is also desirable to minimize the amount of powder due to health and hygiene aspects of the manufacturing process.
[0015] The fill material in the oral pouch product disclosed herein may have a moisture content before use, as determined by the method disclosed herein, of from 1% by weight to 35% by weight of the fill material. The fill material in the oral pouch product disclosed herein may have a moisture content before use, as determined by the method disclosed herein, of from 1% by weight to 30% by weight of the fill material, for example, from 1% by weight to 25% by weight of the fill material, for example, from 1% by weight to 20% by weight of the fill material, for example, from 1% by weight to 15% by weight of the fill material, for example, from 1% by weight to 7% by weight of the fill material, for example, from 5% by weight to 30% by weight of the fill material, for example, from 5% by weight to 25% by weight of the fill material, for example, from 5% by weight to 20% by weight of the fill material, for example, from 5% by weight to 15% by weight of the fill material, for example, from 10% by weight to 20% by weight of the fill material, for example, from 10% by weight to 15% by weight of the fill material.
[0016] The fill material in the oral pouch products disclosed herein, having a relatively low pre-use moisture content, is perceived by the user as being fresh and easy to handle when the user removes it from the container and places it, for example, between the user's upper or lower lip and gums.
[0017] It may be preferred that the fill material in the oral pouch products disclosed herein have a moisture content of less than 20% by weight.
[0018] The water-insoluble particulate material in the filler material can comprise or consist of water-insoluble particles, which can be particles of microcrystalline cellulose, water-insoluble starch, silica, or mixtures thereof.
[0019] Water-insoluble particles: 0.8 g / cm 3 ~1.7g / cm 3 range, e.g., 1.0 g / cm 3 ~1.5g / cm 3 , e.g., 1.1 g / cm 3 ~1.4g / cm 3 The particles may be relatively dense, non-porous particles having a particle density of 0.1 to 1.0.
[0020] The water-insoluble particles can comprise 75% to 99% by dry weight of the fill material, for example, 85% to 98% by dry weight of the fill material, or 95% to 98% by dry weight of the fill material. The water-insoluble particles can comprise 85% to 99% by dry weight of the fill material.
[0021] The particles of the water-insoluble particulate material in the filler material are preferably relatively large particles and may have an average particle size in the range of 0.3 mm to 3.0 mm, for example, 0.4 mm to 3.0 mm, for example, 0.5 mm to 2.5 mm, for example, 0.6 mm to 2.5 mm, for example, 0.7 mm to 2 mm, for example, 0.8 mm to 1.5 mm, for example, 0.85 mm to 1.2 mm.
[0022] The particles of the water-insoluble particulate material in the filler material can generally be of the same size and have a narrow particle size distribution profile.
[0023] The liquid permeable outer coating material of the oral pouch product disclosed herein has a liquid permeability of 4,500 l / m when measured according to test method WSP070.1.R3(12) as defined by EDANA, the European Disposables and Nonwovens Association. 2 / s~10,000l / m 2 The air permeability is related to the porosity of the packaging material and therefore its tendency to leak out the filling material. 2 Coating materials having an air permeability greater than 1 / s are herein considered to have high air permeability.
[0024] The liquid-permeable outer coating material is 10 g / m 2 ~28g / m 2 range, e.g. 15g / m 2 ~25g / m 2The coating material may have a relatively low basis weight in the range of 0.01 to 0.01. Low basis weight coating materials with high air permeability constitute a minimal barrier to saliva transport to and from the fill material in oral pouches. Such coating materials have also been found to provide sensory benefits, particularly when combined with particles having a relatively large particle size, as disclosed herein. Larger particles that can move relatively freely within the coating and be felt through the coating material can contribute to particulate fill materials in oral pouches being understood to have pleasant fluid properties.
[0025] The particles of water-insoluble particulate material in the fill material of the oral pouch products disclosed herein have a water solubility of 4,500 l / m when measured according to EDANA test method WSP070.1.R3(12). 2 / s~10,000l / m 2 In combination with a liquid-permeable coating material having a relatively high porosity in the range of / s, the particles may have a relatively large particle size in the range of 0.3 mm to 3 mm, preferably 0.4 to 3.0 mm, preferably 0.5 mm to 3.0 mm, more preferably 0.6 mm to 3.0 mm, and most preferably 0.7 mm to 3 mm.
[0026] A highly permeable coating material is preferable because it allows saliva to easily pass into and out of the filler material, which can contribute to a high release rate of active ingredients, flavors, sweeteners, etc. from the filler material encapsulated in the coating material. A disadvantage of a highly porous coating material is that there is a risk that insoluble substrate materials in the filler material, such as water-insoluble particles and powders, and fibers, may also leak into the oral cavity of a user of the oral pouch product through the holes in the coating material. By selecting large particles in combination with a highly porous coating material, the risk of particle leakage can be significantly reduced or even eliminated.
[0027] The liquid-permeable covering material of the oral pouch product can be a nonwoven material, for example a nonwoven material comprising regenerated cellulose staple fibers, which can be viscose staple fibers, and the nonwoven material can further comprise a binder, for example a binder used for chemical bonding.
[0028] The particles of the water-insoluble particulate material in the filler material are preferably spherical, or are spherical particles usually having a sphericity in the range of 0.7 to 1.0, for example 0.8 to 1.0, and a diameter of 0.3 mm to 3 mm, for example 0.4 mm to 3 mm, for example 0.7 mm to 3 mm.
[0029] Sphericity and particle size can be determined using a QicPic image analyzer from 2012, Sympatec GmbH, ID No. 290-D, equipped with a Rodos / L dispersion line, ID No. 214D, and a Vibri / L sample dispenser, ID No. 273, or equivalent equipment. A stream of well-dispersed particles is passed across the image plane of the instrument. For small particles, a large number of particles can be captured per image frame, e.g., as many as 50,000 to 100,000 particles per image frame. For larger particles, e.g., particles with a diameter of 300 μm to 3000 μm, the number of particles per image frame can be significantly lower, e.g., as few as 300 to 2000 particles per image frame.
[0030] The fill material of the oral pouch products disclosed herein may include nicotine.
[0031] Nicotine can be added to the water-insoluble particulate material of the fill material in the form of a nicotine compound, which can be nicotine base and / or can be selected from the group consisting of nicotine hydrochloride, nicotine dihydrochloride, nicotine tartrate, nicotine bitartrate, nicotine bitartrate dihydrate, nicotine sulfate, nicotine zinc chloride monohydrate, nicotine salicylate, nicotine benzoate, nicotine polacrilex, and any combination thereof.
[0032] The fill material of the oral pouch product disclosed herein is a tobacco-free fill material or a fill material with a low tobacco content, where the fill material contains tobacco material in an amount ranging from 0.05 wt% to 10 wt%, for example, 0.2 wt% to 1 wt%, based on the total weight of the fill material. In such cases, the tobacco material can be the nicotine source. The tobacco material can be the sole nicotine source or a nicotine source in addition to one or more of the nicotine compounds disclosed herein. The water-insoluble particulate material in the fill material disclosed herein is preferably composed of tobacco-free particles, such as tobacco-free microcrystalline cellulose particles, water-insoluble starch particles, silica particles, or a mixture of two or more different types of tobacco-free particles. The tobacco-free fill material or tobacco-free particles may contain trace amounts of tobacco, less than 0.05 wt%.
[0033] The fill material of the oral pouch products disclosed herein may include an additive selected from the group consisting of flavoring agents, sweeteners, humectants, and any mixtures thereof.
[0034] The additive may comprise or consist of a flavoring agent, such as a flavor oil, eg, a hydrophobic flavor oil, eg, a synthetic flavor, eg, a nature-identical flavor.
[0035] The fill material of the oral pouch products disclosed herein can be free of tobacco material. The non-tobacco fill material can include materials derived from other plant sources, such as coffee, tea, herbs, etc., and / or any suitable flavoring agents, sweeteners, etc. known in the art.
[0036] One or more water-soluble ingredients and other additives are preferably added to the water-insoluble particles of the water-insoluble particle material in the fill material after the particles are formed. One or more water-soluble ingredients and other additives can be added to the water-insoluble particles as a liquid / aqueous mixture. All added ingredients can be included in the same mixture. Alternatively, different ingredients can be added in different addition steps, for example, flavoring agents can be added in a separate step from active agents such as nicotine. By adding one or more water-soluble ingredients and other additives to pre-formed water-insoluble particles, most of the additives remain on the surface of the water-insoluble particles and do not penetrate into the interior of the water-insoluble particles, thereby all or substantially all of the additives are present on the surface of the water-insoluble particles in the fill material. The water-insoluble particles are preferably homogeneous hydrophilic particles, such as one or more particles of microcrystalline cellulose, water-insoluble starch, and silica. Furthermore, it may be preferable for the water-insoluble particles to be composed of one or more single-component particles of microcrystalline cellulose, water-insoluble starch, and silica.
[0037] In the pouch-like products disclosed herein, at least one of the one or more water-soluble components can be present on the outer surface of at least some of the particles of the water-insoluble particulate material in the fill material, for example, 20% to 100% of the particles, or 50% to 100% of the particles, or 80% to 100% of the particles.
[0038] In the pouch-like products disclosed herein, at least one of the one or more water-soluble components can be present in the interstices between particles of the water-insoluble particulate material in the fill material.
[0039] At least one of the one or more water-soluble components can be present both on the outer surfaces of at least some of the particles in the packing material and in the interstices between the particles in the packing material.
[0040] The fill material of the oral pouch product as disclosed herein can include multiple types of particles. Thus, the water-insoluble particles of the water-insoluble particulate material constitute a first type of particles, and the second type of particles can differ from the first type of particles in one or more characteristics, such as size, shape, or composition. The second type of particles can be water-insoluble particles or can be fully or partially water-soluble particles.
[0041] definition The terms "oral" and "oral" refer to the use of a product in contact with mucous membranes in the human mouth, e.g., placing the product on the cheek in the oral cavity. The oral products disclosed herein are intended to be placed entirely in the oral cavity and are not intended to be swallowed.
[0042] As used herein, the term "oral pouch" or "oral pouch" refers to a portion of a smokeless composition containing a saliva extract packaged in a saliva-permeable pouch material.
[0043] As used herein, a "particle" is a three-dimensional piece of material having a maximum dimension of less than 5 mm and an aspect ratio of 0.3 to 1. As used herein, "aspect ratio" A R is calculated as the particle width w divided by the particle length l, where the length is determined as the particle's longest dimension and the width is determined as the longest dimension perpendicular to the length: A R = w / l. Particles with an aspect ratio of 1 can be, for example, perfect spheres or cubes. Particles useful as water-insoluble particulate materials in the fill material of the oral pouch products disclosed herein can have a regular shape, such as a sphere, a cube, a cylinder, etc., or can have an irregular shape, although a regular or near-regular shape is usually preferred. The particles can have a generally smooth outer surface, or can have small deviations in the outer surface.
[0044] As used herein, "water-insoluble particles" refer to particles that do not dissolve when exposed to saliva in the user's mouth, and maintain or substantially maintain their shape when incorporated into an oral pouch.Water-insoluble particles also mean that the particle size of the water-insoluble particles described herein does not decrease or does not decrease by at least 1% during use of the oral pouch that incorporates the water-insoluble particles. The shape and size of the water-insoluble particles can remain substantially unaffected during use. However, a certain amount of swelling of the water-insoluble particles may be tolerated or even desired.Swelling should preferably be less than 30% of the volume of the water-insoluble particles before use, more preferably less than 20% of the volume of the water-insoluble particles before use.
[0045] As used herein, the term "moisture content" refers to the weight percent (wt%) of oven volatiles, such as water and other oven volatiles (e.g., propylene glycol), present in a component, composition, or product and determined according to the Loss on Drying (LOD) method disclosed herein.
[0046] The "dry mass" of an ingredient, composition, or product is calculated by subtracting the amount of moisture from the total mass of the ingredient, composition, or product, with moisture content being determined by the loss on drying (LOD) method disclosed herein.
[0047] As used herein, the term "water content" refers to the weight percent (wt%) of water in a component material, composition, or product. Water content can be determined using standard methods of water analysis, such as Karl Fischer titration, gas chromatography (GC).
[0048] The term "additional ingredient" refers to any ingredient other than water that is present in addition to the particles of water-insoluble particulate material in the fill materials disclosed herein, such as salts (e.g., sodium chloride, potassium chloride, magnesium chloride, calcium chloride, and any combination thereof), pH adjusters (e.g., sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, potassium carbonate, sodium carbonate, or sodium bicarbonate), flavorings, sweeteners, coloring agents, humectants (e.g., propylene glycol or glycerol), antioxidants, preservatives (e.g., potassium sorbate), binders, tobacco, and non-tobacco plant materials. The water-soluble ingredients that are part of the fill material in the oral pouch products disclosed herein constitute one or more additional ingredients.
[0049] The term "flavoring agent" or "flavoring agent" is used herein to refer to a substance used to affect the aroma and / or taste of an oral pouch product. Flavoring agents can be any food-grade natural or synthetic flavoring agent known in the art, including, but not limited to, essential oils, single flavor compounds, complex flavors, and extracts.
[0050] By "tobacco" or "tobacco material" is meant any part of any member of the Nicotiana genus, including leaves, petioles, stems, and flowers.
[0051] As used herein, "covering material" refers to any suitable saliva-permeable packaging material known in the art. The covering material, which can also be referred to as a "pouch material," may be a nonwoven material, a material made by conventional textile manufacturing methods, such as weaving or knitting, or an apertured plastic film or netting. Nonwoven materials suitable for use as covering materials can be nonwoven materials comprising staple fibers, such as regenerated cellulose staple fibers, such as viscose rayon staple fibers, and a binder, such as a polyacrylate binder. Such nonwoven materials are generally produced by carding staple fibers to form a fibrous web and then consolidating the carded fibrous web with a binder. Alternatively, nonwoven materials can include fibers formed into a nonwoven web by spunbonding, hydroentanglement, meltblowing, etc. The fibers used in such processes are typically thermoplastic fibers that are thermally bonded to form a cohesive nonwoven web. The covering material may optionally contain additional ingredients, such as flavorings and / or colorants.
[0052] A common method for making pouches having a generally rectangular, pillow-like shape is to either provide the covering material as a seamless end-to-end tube or to form a flat web of covering material into an end-to-end tube with continuous seals along the length of the end-to-end tube. The end-to-end tube is then intermittently sealed across the end-to-end tube while the end-to-end tube is filled with a filler material to create pockets between the transverse seals. Individual pouches are cut from the filled and sealed tube of covering material and typically packaged in user containers. Sealing the covering material can be accomplished by any suitable method or combination of methods, such as adhesives, heat sealing, ultrasonic welding, sewing, etc. Heat sealing and ultrasonic welding require that the covering material contain at least a functional amount of thermoplastic material, such as thermoplastic fibers or a thermoplastic binder.
[0053] Oral pouches are typically sized and configured to fit comfortably and unobtrusively in a user's mouth between the upper or lower gums and lips. Oral pouches typically have a regular rectangular shape. Typical shapes (length x width) of commercially available oral pouches include, for example, 35 mm x 20 mm, 34 / 35 mm x 14 mm, 33 / 34 mm x 18 mm, 27 / 28 mm x 14 mm, 34 mm x 10 mm, and 38 x 14 mm. A typical oral pouch may have a maximum length along the longitudinal direction of the product ranging from 25 mm to 40 mm and a maximum width along the transverse direction of the product ranging from 5 mm to 20 mm. The thickness of the pouch before use is typically in the range of 2 mm to 8 mm. The total mass of commercially available oral pouches typically ranges from about 0.3 g to about 3.5 g per pouch, e.g., about 0.5 g to 1.7 g. The volume of the filling material portion of the sachet is 0.5 cm depending on the size of the sachet. 3 ~1.5cm 3 The range can be:
[0054] A "user container" typically contains a range of 10 to 30 pouched products, for example, 20 to 25 pouched products. The pouched products may be randomly placed in the user container or may be placed in a pattern, for example, as described in WO 2012 / 069505 A1. The user container disclosed herein is a consumer package having a shape and size suitable for conveniently carrying the consumer package in a pocket or handbag, and can be used to package any known type of oral pouched product. The user container can include a disposable portion for storage of used oral pouched products. The disposable portion is separate from the portion of the container in which new oral pouched products are stored until use. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0055] Description of Examples and Test Methods Methods for determining moisture content, loss on drying, LOD As used herein, moisture content can be determined by using a method based on the reference Federal Register / vol. 74, no. 4 / 712-719 / Wednesday, January 7, 2009 / bulletin "Total moisture determination" and the AOAC (Association of Official Analytical Chemistry), Official Methods of Analysis 966.02: "Moisture in Tobacco" (1990), 5th Edition, K. Helrich (ed.). In this method, moisture content is determined gravimetrically by taking a 2.5±0.25 g sample before evaporation of the water and after dehydration is complete, and weighing the sample at ambient conditions, defined herein as 22°C and 60% relative humidity. In the experiments described herein, a Mettler Toledo moisture meter HB43 and a balance equipped with halogen heating technology were used (in place of the oven and balance in the above-mentioned references). The sample is heated to 105°C (instead of 99.5±0.5°C in the above reference). The measurement is stopped when the mass change is less than 1 mg over a 90 second time frame. The moisture content of the sample as a mass percent is then automatically calculated by the Moisture Meter HB43.
[0056] Comparative Example Sample 1 - Average particle size 945 μm, particle density 1.3 g / cm based on the total mass of the filler material 3 , bulk density 0.78g / cm 3 and about 9% by weight of a further component. The moisture content of the filler material was 13% of the total weight of the filler material. Reference Example 1 - Shiro Sweet Mint supplied by AG Snus Reference Example 2 - YOYO Havana Mojito Slim supplied by Nordic Noir Holding
[0057] Preparation of Reference Example Samples The oral pouch products of Reference Examples 1 and 2 were cut into small pieces, and sufficient amounts of each filling material were collected for testing.
[0058] Test Procedure The test was carried out on a Retsch / AS 200 control vibrating sieve with a mesh size of 250 μm. 10 g of each of the filler materials of Sample 1, Reference Example 1 and Reference Example 2 was used for the test. Each sample was placed on the sieve and vibrated at an amplitude of 1 mm for 1 minute.
[0059] The mass of the top and bottom fractions was measured for each sample and is shown in Table 1.
[0060] The moisture content of each of Sample 1, Reference Example 1, and Reference Example 2 was measured according to the LOD method. The measured values are shown in Table 2.
[0061] [Table 1]
[0062] [Table 2]
[0063] From Tables 1 and 2, it can be seen that both reference samples, Reference 1 and Reference 2, had a significantly greater proportion of smaller particles or powder than the filler material of Sample 1, despite the fact that both reference samples had almost twice the moisture content of Sample 1.
[0064] The difference between the initial amount of 10 g of fill material and the sum of the upper and lower fractions of the sample can be explained by the small amount of particles adhering to the sieve and the evaporation of volatile substances. The loss of material is similar for Sample 1 and Reference Example 1, and slightly greater for Reference Example 2, which contains a higher amount of small particles.
