AI Technical Summary
Current liquid crystal display elements face challenges in achieving high light transmittance due to the mismatch in refractive indices between transparent conductive films and liquid crystal alignment films, leading to reduced display brightness, especially in ultra-high-definition panels where the difference in refractive indices results in light reflection and low aperture ratios.
A liquid crystal aligning agent with a specific polymer structure is developed, which forms a liquid crystal alignment film with a high refractive index close to that of the transparent conductive film, but without coloring properties, thereby reducing the refractive index difference and enhancing light transmittance and display brightness.
The solution results in a liquid crystal display element with high light transmittance and display brightness by aligning the refractive indices of the liquid crystal alignment film with the transparent conductive film, addressing the issue of reduced brightness in high-definition panels.

Abstract
Description
Liquid crystal alignment agent, liquid crystal alignment film, liquid crystal display element, diamine and polymer
[0001] The present invention relates to a liquid crystal aligning agent, a liquid crystal alignment film obtained from the liquid crystal aligning agent, a liquid crystal display device having the liquid crystal alignment film, and a novel diamine and polymer suitable for them.
[0002] Liquid crystal display elements are widely used in a wide range of applications, from small applications such as mobile phones and smartphones to relatively large applications such as televisions and monitors. Liquid crystal display elements are generally constructed by arranging a pair of electrode substrates facing each other with a predetermined gap (several μm) between them and sealing liquid crystal between the electrode substrates. Images are displayed on the liquid crystal display element by applying a voltage between the transparent conductive films constituting the electrodes of the electrode substrates. These liquid crystal display elements have a liquid crystal alignment film, which is essential for controlling the alignment state of liquid crystal molecules. Patent Document 1 discloses a polyimide alignment film obtained using a diamine compound with a specific structure containing a triazine ring, as a liquid crystal alignment film that can easily adjust the pretilt angle of liquid crystal molecules.
[0003] Meanwhile, various driving methods have been developed for liquid crystal display elements, which differ in electrode structure, physical properties of the liquid crystal molecules used, etc. For example, various modes are known, such as the twisted nematic (TN) method, the super twisted nematic (STN) method, the vertical alignment (VA) method, the in-plane switching (IPS) method, and the fringe field switching (FFS) method. VA (vertical alignment) liquid crystal display elements have a wide viewing angle, a fast response speed, and high contrast, and do not require a rubbing treatment in the production process, so they are widely used, especially for televisions and monitors, for which there is a high demand for larger displays (Patent Documents 2 and 3).

[0005] The transparent conductive film in a liquid crystal display element is typically formed from a composition (ITO) primarily composed of indium oxide doped with a few percent tin oxide. Its refractive index, however, is higher than that of the liquid crystal alignment film. Therefore, when light from a display light source is transmitted through the electrode substrate, the light is reflected at the interface between the transparent conductive film and the liquid crystal alignment film on each electrode substrate. As a result, the light transmittance of the electrode substrate is insufficient, resulting in reduced display brightness. In particular, ultra-high-definition panels, such as 4K and 8K, have been developed in recent years. However, these panels require a large occupancy rate for black matrices (BMs) and thin film transistors (TFTs), reducing the aperture ratio of the panel. Therefore, improving the transmittance of the display area is becoming increasingly important.
[0006] Therefore, the present inventors have investigated various materials for forming a liquid crystal alignment film, with the view that the above-mentioned problems can be resolved by reducing the difference between the refractive index of the transparent conductive film and the refractive index of the liquid crystal alignment film. Polyamic acid or its derivative, polyimide, is widely known as a material for forming a liquid crystal alignment film. The use of a diamine having a triazine skeleton as a diamine component in the raw material for a polyimide liquid crystal alignment film has been proposed, for example, in Patent Document 1. However, the present inventors have found that the method specifically disclosed in Patent Document 1, which uses a diamine having a polycyclic structure, such as a long-chain alkyl group or cholesterol, and a triazine skeleton, leaves room for improvement in terms of increasing the refractive index. Specifically, in order to increase the refractive index of the liquid crystal alignment film, various types of polymers to be contained in the liquid crystal aligning agent forming the liquid crystal alignment film have been explored.
[0007] As a result, by selecting a specific polymer, it was possible to obtain a liquid crystal alignment film having a refractive index close to that of the transparent conductive film, but on the other hand, it was revealed that polymers forming a liquid crystal alignment film with a high refractive index often have coloring properties. A liquid crystal alignment film formed from a liquid crystal alignment agent containing a coloring polymer has low light transmittance, which leads to a decrease in display brightness, and as a result, the above-mentioned object cannot be achieved.
[0008] In view of the above circumstances, an object of the present invention is to provide a liquid crystal alignment agent that forms a liquid crystal alignment film having a high refractive index but no coloring property and therefore high light transmittance, a liquid crystal alignment film obtained from the liquid crystal alignment agent, and a liquid crystal display element having the liquid crystal alignment film.
[0009] The present inventors have conducted extensive research to achieve the above object, and have found that a liquid crystal aligning agent containing a novel polymer having a specific structure is effective for achieving the above object, thereby completing the present invention. T and a polyimide obtained by imidizing the polyimide precursor; a liquid crystal alignment film obtained from the liquid crystal alignment agent; and a liquid crystal display element having the liquid crystal alignment film. (wherein R represents a hydrogen atom, a hydroxy group, a cyano group, a halogen atom, or a monovalent organic group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms; * represents a bond, and any hydrogen atom of the benzene ring bonded to * may be replaced with a monovalent group; L 1 and L 2 are each independently a single bond, -(CH 2 ) n -(n is an integer of 1 to 6), -NR'-, -(CH 2 ) n represents —NR′— (n is an integer of 1 to 6), —O—, —S—, —O—CO—, or —CO—O—, and R′ represents a hydrogen atom or a monovalent organic group.) Throughout this specification, examples of halogen atoms include a fluorine atom, a chlorine atom, a bromine atom, and an iodine atom, and * represents a bond.
[0010] According to the present invention, a liquid crystal aligning agent is obtained that has a high refractive index but is not colorable, and therefore forms a liquid crystal alignment film with high light transmittance. Because the liquid crystal alignment film formed with such a liquid crystal aligning agent has a high refractive index, the difference between the refractive index of the transparent conductive film in a liquid crystal display element and the refractive index of the liquid crystal alignment film can be reduced. Furthermore, because it is not colorable, a liquid crystal display element with high light transmittance and high display brightness can be obtained.

[0049] The proportion of the tetracarboxylic dianhydride represented by the above formula (T) or its derivative to be used is preferably 10 mol % or more, more preferably 20 mol % or more, and even more preferably 50 mol % or more, based on 1 mol of the total tetracarboxylic acid components used. The tetracarboxylic dianhydride and its derivative to be used in the production of the polyamic acid (P') may contain a tetracarboxylic dianhydride or its derivative other than the above formula (T).
[0050] (Synthesis of Polyamic Acid) Polyamic acid is synthesized by reacting a diamine component containing the diamine described above with a tetracarboxylic acid component containing the tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride or its derivative in an organic solvent. The ratio of the tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride and diamine used in the polyamic acid synthesis reaction is preferably such that 0.5 to 2 equivalents of the acid anhydride groups of the tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride are present per equivalent of the amino groups of the diamine, more preferably 0.8 to 1.2 equivalents. As with typical polycondensation reactions, the closer the equivalent of the acid anhydride groups of the tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride is to 1 equivalent, the higher the molecular weight of the resulting polyamic acid. The reaction temperature in the polyamic acid synthesis reaction is preferably −20 to 150°C, more preferably 0 to 100°C. The reaction time is preferably 0.1 to 24 hours, more preferably 0.5 to 12 hours. [0053] (Synthesis of Polyamic Acid Ester) The polyamic acid ester can be obtained by known methods such as, for example, [I] a method of reacting the polyamic acid obtained by the above method with an esterifying agent, [II] a method of reacting a tetracarboxylic acid diester with a diamine, or [III] a method of reacting a tetracarboxylic acid diester dihalide with a diamine.
[0054] (Synthesis of Polyimide) Polyimide can be obtained by ring-closing (imidizing) a polyimide precursor such as the polyamic acid or polyamic acid ester. The imidization ratio in this specification refers to the ratio of imide groups to the total amount of imide groups derived from tetracarboxylic dianhydride or its derivatives and carboxyl groups (or their derivatives). The imidization ratio does not necessarily have to be 100% and can be adjusted as desired depending on the application and purpose.
[0055] Methods for imidizing the polyimide precursor include thermal imidization, in which a solution of the polyimide precursor is heated as is, and catalytic imidization, in which a catalyst is added to a solution of the polyimide precursor.
[0056] When the polyimide precursor is thermally imidized in a solution, the temperature is preferably 100 to 400°C, more preferably 120 to 250°C, and it is preferable to carry out the imidization while removing water produced by the imidization reaction from the system.
[0057] Catalytic imidization of polyimide precursors can be carried out by adding a basic catalyst and an acid anhydride to a solution of the polyimide precursor and stirring at -20 to 250°C, preferably 0 to 180°C. The amount of the basic catalyst is 0.5 to 30 times, preferably 2 to 20 times, the molar ratio of the amic acid groups, and the amount of the acid anhydride is 1 to 50 times, preferably 3 to 30 times, the molar ratio of the amic acid groups. Examples of basic catalysts include pyridine, triethylamine, trimethylamine, tributylamine, and trioctylamine. Of these, pyridine is preferred because it has adequate basicity for promoting the reaction. Examples of acid anhydrides include acetic anhydride, trimellitic anhydride, and pyromellitic anhydride. Of these, acetic anhydride is preferred because it facilitates purification after the reaction. The imidization rate by catalytic imidization can be controlled by adjusting the catalyst amount, reaction temperature, and reaction time.
[0058] When recovering the produced polyimide precursor or polyimide from a reaction solution of a polyimide precursor or polyimide, the reaction solution may be precipitated by pouring the reaction solution into a solvent. Examples of solvents used for precipitation include methanol, ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, acetone, hexane, butyl cellosolve, heptane, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, toluene, benzene, and water. The polymer precipitated by pouring into the solvent can be recovered by filtration and then dried at room temperature or by heating under atmospheric or reduced pressure. Furthermore, the precipitated polymer can be redissolved in an organic solvent and reprecipitated and recovered 2 to 10 times, thereby reducing the amount of impurities in the polymer. Examples of solvents used in this process include alcohols, ketones, and hydrocarbons. Using three or more solvents selected from these solvents is preferred because it further increases the efficiency of purification.

[0068] The liquid crystal alignment film of the present invention is obtained from the liquid crystal aligning agent. The liquid crystal alignment film of the present invention can be used as a horizontal alignment type or vertical alignment type liquid crystal alignment film, and is particularly suitable for a vertical alignment type liquid crystal display element such as a VA mode or PSA (Polymer Sustained Alignment) mode.
[0069] The liquid crystal display element of the present invention is provided with the above-described liquid crystal alignment film. The liquid crystal aligning agent of the present invention is also preferably used for a liquid crystal display element which has a liquid crystal layer between a pair of substrates each having an electrode, and is manufactured by a process of disposing a liquid crystal composition containing a polymerizable compound which is polymerized by at least one of active energy rays and heat between the pair of substrates, and polymerizing the polymerizable compound by at least one of irradiation with active energy rays and heating while applying a voltage between the electrodes.
[0070] The liquid crystal display element of the present invention can be manufactured, for example, by a method that performs the following steps (1) to (3) or steps (1) to (4) in this order. (1) A step of applying a liquid crystal aligning agent to at least one of a pair of substrates having a conductive film to form a coating film. The liquid crystal aligning agent of the present invention is applied to one surface of at least one of a pair of substrates having a patterned transparent conductive film by an appropriate coating method, such as a roll coater method, a spin coating method, a printing method, or an inkjet method, to form a coating film. The substrate is not particularly limited as long as it is highly transparent. In addition to glass substrates and silicon nitride substrates, plastic substrates such as acrylic substrates and polycarbonate substrates can also be used. Furthermore, in reflective liquid crystal display elements, an opaque material such as a silicon wafer can be used for only one of the substrates. In this case, a light-reflective material such as aluminum can also be used for the electrode.
[0071] (2) Step of Baking the Coating Film After applying the liquid crystal alignment agent, the coating film is baked to prevent dripping of the applied alignment agent. Preferably, preheating (prebaking) is first performed. The prebaking temperature is preferably 30 to 200°C, more preferably 40 to 150°C, and particularly preferably 40 to 100°C. The prebaking time is preferably 0.25 to 10 minutes, more preferably 0.5 to 5 minutes. Then, a heating (postbaking) step is preferably performed. The postbaking temperature is preferably 80 to 300°C, more preferably 120 to 250°C. The postbaking time is preferably 5 to 200 minutes, more preferably 10 to 100 minutes. The film thickness of the film thus formed is preferably 5 to 300 nm, more preferably 10 to 200 nm.
[0072] The coating film formed in the above steps (1) and (2) can be used as a liquid crystal alignment film as it is, but the coating film may be subjected to an alignment ability imparting treatment, such as a rubbing treatment in which the coating film is rubbed in a certain direction with a roll wrapped with a cloth made of fibers such as nylon, rayon, or cotton, or a photoalignment treatment in which the coating film is irradiated with polarized or unpolarized radiation.
[0073] In the photo-alignment treatment, the radiation irradiated onto the coating film can be, for example, ultraviolet light and visible light containing light with a wavelength of 150 to 800 nm. When the radiation is polarized, it may be linearly polarized or partially polarized. Furthermore, when the radiation used is linearly polarized or partially polarized, irradiation may be performed from a direction perpendicular to the substrate surface, from an oblique direction, or a combination of these. When irradiating with unpolarized radiation, the irradiation direction is an oblique direction. (3) Step of forming a liquid crystal layer between the pair of substrates to prepare a liquid crystal cell. (3-1) When manufacturing a VA-mode liquid crystal display element. As described above, two substrates are prepared, at least one of which has the liquid crystal alignment film of the present invention formed thereon, and liquid crystal is disposed between the two substrates arranged opposite each other. Specifically, the following two methods can be used. The first method is a conventionally known method. First, two substrates are arranged opposite each other with a gap (cell gap) between them so that the liquid crystal alignment films face each other. Next, a sealant is applied to the peripheries of the two substrates and they are bonded together, and a liquid crystal composition is injected into the cell gap defined by the substrate surfaces and the sealant to contact the film surface, and then the injection hole is sealed.
[0074] The second method is called the ODF (One Drop Fill) method. A UV-curable sealant, for example, is applied to a predetermined location on one of two substrates on which a liquid crystal alignment film has been formed. A liquid crystal composition is then dropped onto several predetermined locations on the liquid crystal alignment film. The other substrate is then attached so that the liquid crystal alignment film faces the other substrate, and the liquid crystal composition is spread over the entire surface of the substrate and brought into contact with the film surface. The entire surface of the substrate is then irradiated with UV light to cure the sealant. In either method, it is desirable to further heat the liquid crystal composition to a temperature at which it assumes an isotropic phase and then slowly cool it to room temperature to remove flow alignment that occurs during liquid crystal filling. The liquid crystal composition is not particularly limited, and various liquid crystal compositions containing at least one liquid crystal compound (liquid crystal molecule) and having positive or negative dielectric anisotropy can be used. Hereinafter, liquid crystal compositions with positive dielectric anisotropy are also referred to as positive liquid crystals, and liquid crystal compositions with negative dielectric anisotropy are also referred to as negative liquid crystals. The liquid crystal composition may contain a liquid crystal compound having a fluorine atom, a hydroxy group, an amino group, a fluorine atom-containing group (e.g., a trifluoromethyl group), a cyano group, an alkyl group, an alkoxy group, an alkenyl group, an isothiocyanate group, a heterocycle, a cycloalkane, a cycloalkene, a steroid skeleton, a benzene ring, or a naphthalene ring. It may also contain a compound having two or more rigid moieties (mesogenic skeletons) exhibiting liquid crystallinity within the molecule (e.g., a bimesogenic compound in which two rigid biphenyl structures or terphenyl structures are connected by an alkyl group). The liquid crystal composition may be a liquid crystal composition exhibiting a nematic phase, a smectic phase, or a cholesteric phase. Furthermore, additives may be further added to the liquid crystal composition to improve the liquid crystal alignment properties. Examples of such additives include photopolymerizable monomers such as compounds having a polymerizable group described below; optically active compounds (e.g., S-811 manufactured by Merck Ltd.); antioxidants; ultraviolet absorbers; dyes; antifoaming agents; polymerization initiators; and polymerization inhibitors. Examples of the positive liquid crystal include ZLI-2293, ZLI-4792, MLC-2003, MLC-2041, and MLC-7081 manufactured by Merck.Examples of negative liquid crystals include MLC-6608, MLC-6609, MLC-6610, and MLC-7026-100 manufactured by Merck & Co., Inc. In addition, in the PSA mode, an example of a liquid crystal containing a compound having a polymerizable group is MLC-3023 manufactured by Merck & Co., Inc.
[0075] (3-2) In the case of producing a PSA-mode liquid crystal display element, the procedure is the same as in (3-1) above, except that a liquid crystal composition containing a compound having a polymerizable group is injected or dropped. Examples of the compound having a polymerizable group include compounds having a polymerizable group such as those represented by the following formulas (M-1) to (M-6). (3-3) In the case where a coating film is formed on a substrate using a liquid crystal aligning agent containing a compound having a polymerizable group, a method for producing a liquid crystal display element may be employed, following the procedure described above in (3-1) and then a step of irradiating with ultraviolet light, as described below. This method, similar to the production of the PSA-type liquid crystal display element, allows for the production of a liquid crystal display element with excellent response speed with a low light exposure dose. The compound having a polymerizable group may be a compound having one or more polymerizable unsaturated groups, such as acrylate groups or methacrylate groups, in the molecule, as represented by the above formulas (M-1) to (M-6). The content of the compound is preferably 0.1 to 30 parts by mass, more preferably 1 to 20 parts by mass, per 100 parts by mass of all polymer components. Furthermore, the polymerizable group may be contained in the polymer used in the liquid crystal aligning agent. Examples of such polymers include polymers obtained by reacting a diamine component containing a diamine having the above photopolymerizable group at its terminal.
[0076] (4) Step of Irradiating the Liquid Crystal Cell with Light The liquid crystal cell is irradiated with light while a voltage is applied between the conductive films of the pair of substrates obtained in (3-2) or (3-3) above. The voltage applied here can be, for example, 5 to 50 V DC or AC. The light to be irradiated can be, for example, ultraviolet light and visible light containing light with a wavelength of 150 to 800 nm, but ultraviolet light containing light with a wavelength of 300 to 400 nm is preferred. The light source for the irradiation light can be, for example, a low-pressure mercury lamp, a high-pressure mercury lamp, a deuterium lamp, a metal halide lamp, an argon resonance lamp, a xenon lamp, or an excimer laser. The light irradiation dose is preferably 1,000 to 200,000 J / m 2 and more preferably 1,000 to 100,000 J / m 2 is.
[0077] A liquid crystal display element can be obtained by laminating a polarizing plate to the outer surface of the liquid crystal cell. Examples of the polarizing plate to be laminated to the outer surface of the liquid crystal cell include a polarizing plate in which a polarizing film called an "H film" made by stretching and aligning polyvinyl alcohol and absorbing iodine is sandwiched between cellulose acetate protective films, and a polarizing plate made of the H film itself.
[0078] The liquid crystal display element of the present invention can be effectively applied to various devices, and can be used in various display devices such as watches, portable games, word processors, notebook computers, car navigation systems, camcorders, PDAs, digital cameras, mobile phones, smartphones, various monitors, liquid crystal televisions, information displays, etc. In addition, the polymer composition contained in the liquid crystal aligning agent can be used as a liquid crystal alignment film for a retardation film, a liquid crystal alignment film for a scanning antenna or a liquid crystal array antenna, or a liquid crystal alignment film for a transmissive / scattering liquid crystal dimming element, or for other applications such as a protective film for a color filter, a gate insulating film for a flexible display, or a substrate material.
[0079] The present invention will be specifically described below with reference to examples, but the present invention should not be construed as being limited to these examples. The abbreviations of the compounds and the methods for measuring the respective properties are as follows.

[0083] <Evaluation of Refractive Index by Molecular Orbital Calculation> The refractive index of the following molecules (A) to (G) was evaluated by performing molecular orbital calculation.
[0084] Here, the refractive index can be calculated from the polarizability when the structure obtained by molecular orbital calculation for the target molecule is optimized, using the following calculation formula (1) (Lorentz-Lorenz formula). In the molecular orbital calculation for structural optimization, B3LYP was used as the functional and 6-31G* as the basis function. Furthermore, the refractive index was calculated as a value at 550 nm, and in this case, the UV spectrum was calculated using TD-B3LYP as the functional and 6-31G* as the basis function. In the molecular orbital calculation for structural optimization, it is possible to use, for example, Gaussian09 (Revision C.01, M.J. Frisch, et al., Gaussian, Inc., 2010.) manufactured by Gaussian, Inc., USA, as molecular orbital calculation software. However, the means for performing molecular orbital calculation is not limited to this. (n 2 −1) / (n 2 +2) = 4πα / 3V (1) (In the above formula (1), n represents the refractive index, α represents the polarizability, and V represents the volume per monomer. V can be calculated using the following formula (2).) V = V vdw / K p ... (2) (In the above calculation formula (2), V vdw is the molar volume of the monomer, K p represents the filling factor (0.681).
[0085] The calculation results are shown in Table 1. As shown in Table 1, the molecules (A) to (C) derived from the specific diamines (DA-1) to (DA-3) exhibited higher refractive indices than the molecules (D) to (E) that did not have a triazine ring and the molecules (F) to (G) in which the side chain group bonded to the triazine ring was a polycyclic structure such as a long-chain alkyl group or cholesterol.

Under a nitrogen atmosphere, 2,4-dichloro-6-methoxy-1,3,5-triazine (8.97 g, 49.8 mmol) and acetone (179 g) were added to a solution cooled to 0 ° C. in an ice bath. In a separate container, 4-nitrophenol (17.3 g, 124 mmol), acetone (138 g), and a 20% aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide (25.0 g) were added to form a homogeneous solution, and the solution cooled to 0 ° C. was added dropwise. After stirring for 1 hour, the temperature was raised to 50 ° C. and stirring was continued for 17 hours. After that, a 2% aqueous solution of sodium carbonate (400 g) was added, and crystals precipitated. The precipitated crystals were filtered, and the cake was washed twice with saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate (45 g), twice with water (45 g), and twice with methanol (27 g), in that order. After drying in vacuo at 60 ° C., DA-1-1 (16.7 g, 43.3 mmol, yield 87.0%, white solid) was obtained. THF (314 g) and 5% palladium carbon (N.E. Chemcat Corporation, 50% by mass water content, 1.57 g) were added to DA-1-1 (15.7 g, 40.8 mmol), and nitro reduction was carried out at room temperature under a hydrogen atmosphere. After the reaction, the palladium carbon was filtered off, and the crude product obtained by concentrating the filtrate was recrystallized from isopropyl alcohol (96.0 g) to obtain DA-1 (10.1 g, 31.0 mmol, yield 76.1%, white solid). 1 From the results of H-NMR, this solid was confirmed to be diamine (DA-1). 1 H-NMR (500MHz, CDCl 3 ): δ (ppm) = 6.94 (d, 4H, J = 8.8Hz), 6.65 (d, 4H, J = 8.8Hz), 3.92 (s, 3H), 3.65 (br, 4H)
[0088] Monomer Synthesis Example 2: Synthesis of (DA-2) Diamine (DA-2) was synthesized according to the route shown below. A solution of 2,4-dichloro-6-methoxy-1,3,5-triazine (18.0 g, 100 mmol) dissolved in acetonitrile (216 g) was added dropwise over 40 minutes to a solution of paraphenylenediamine (86.5 g, 800 mmol) dissolved in methanol (396 g) heated to 60°C. After the dropwise addition was completed, the mixture was stirred at 60°C for 1 hour, and then triethylamine (25.3 g, 250 mmol) was added and stirred for 10 minutes, after which the solvent was distilled off. When 50°C water (306 g) was added to the solution (234 g) after distillation of the solvent, a solid precipitated. After cooling to room temperature, the precipitated solid was separated by filtration, and the resulting solid was cake-washed three times with a mixed solvent of water (72.0 g) and methanol (72.0 g) heated to 50°C. Acetonitrile (404 g) was added to the washed solid, and the solid was dissolved under reflux conditions, and insoluble components were removed by filtration. The obtained filtrate was concentrated, and methanol (100 g) was added to the crude product obtained, and the mixture was stirred for 1 hour under heating conditions at 60°C. After that, the mixture was cooled to room temperature, and the precipitated solid was collected by filtration and dried in vacuo at 40°C to obtain DA-2 (14.9 g, 46.2 mmol, yield 46.2%, pink solid). The following 1 From the results of H-NMR, this solid was confirmed to be diamine (DA-2). 1 H-NMR (500MHz, [D 6 ]-DMSO): δ (ppm) = 9.13-9.10 (m, 2H), 7.28 (s, 4H), 6.48 (s, 4H), 4.80 (s, 4H), 3.81 (s, 3H)
[0089] Monomer Synthesis Example 3: Synthesis of (DA-3) Diamine (DA-3) was synthesized according to the route shown below. Acetone (125 g) was added to 2,4-dichloro-6-methoxy-1,3,5-triazine (12.5 g, 69.6 mmol), and the solution was cooled to 0°C. In a separate vessel, 4-aminothiophenol (19.2 g, 153 mmol), acetone (115 g), and a 20% by mass aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide (30.6 g) were added to form a homogeneous solution, and the solution cooled to 0°C was added dropwise. After stirring at 0°C for 3 hours, the reaction solution was recovered while removing the by-product sodium chloride by decantation, and the resulting solution was concentrated to obtain a crude product. Ethyl acetate (269 g) and water (168 g) were added to the obtained crude product, and the mixture was separated and washed. The resulting organic layer was heated to 78°C, and the insoluble by-product was removed by filtration. The ethyl acetate solution was then concentrated. Ethyl acetate (134 g) was added to the obtained slurry concentrate, and the slurry was stirred at room temperature for 1 hour. After that, the target product was collected by filtration and dried in vacuo at 40°C to obtain DA-3 (11.3 g, 31.6 mmol, yield 45.4%, light gray solid). 1 From the results of H-NMR, this solid was confirmed to be diamine (DA-3). 1 H-NMR (500MHz, [D 6 ]-DMSO): δ (ppm) = 7.12 (d, 4H, J = 8.6Hz), 6.58 (d, 4H, J = 8.6Hz), 5.54 (br, 4H), 3.69 (s, 3H)
[0090] [Synthesis of Polyamic Acid] <Synthesis Example 1> 1.46 g (4.50 mmol) of DA-1 and 2.08 g (10.5 mmol) of DA-5 as diamine components were weighed into a 50 mL four-neck flask equipped with a stirrer, and 24.8 g of NMP was added and stirred to dissolve. While stirring this diamine solution, 2.82 g (14.4 mmol) of DC-1 as a tetracarboxylic dianhydride component was added, and then 11.3 g of NMP was added, and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 15 hours to obtain a solution of polyamic acid (A-1) (viscosity: 638 mPa s, number average molecular weight: 14,085).
[0091] Synthesis Examples 2 to 5 Solutions of polyamic acids (A-2) to (A-5) shown in Table 2 were obtained in the same manner as in Synthesis Example 1, except that the diamine component and the tetracarboxylic dianhydride component were changed to those shown in Table 2. The viscosities and molecular weights of the obtained polyamic acids are shown in Table 2.
[0092] [Preparation of liquid crystal aligning agent] <Example 1> NMP (6.0 g) and BCS (7.2 g) are added to the solution (4.8 g) of polyamic acid (A-1) obtained above, and stirred at room temperature for 10 hours, to obtain a liquid crystal aligning agent (PAA-1) in which the concentration of polyamic acid (A-1) in the liquid crystal aligning agent is 4 mass %, and the solvent composition ratio is NMP:BCS=56:40 (mass ratio).
[0093] Examples 2 to 3 and Comparative Examples 1 to 2 Liquid crystal aligning agents (PAA-2) to (PAA-5) shown in Table 3 were obtained by carrying out the same procedure as in Example 1, except that the polyamic acid solution was changed to that shown in Table 3. In the table, the "solid content concentration" represents the ratio of the content of the liquid crystal aligning agent other than the solvent component contained in the liquid crystal aligning agent to the entire liquid crystal aligning agent.
[0094] Examples 4 to 6 and Comparative Example 3 The liquid crystal aligning agent (PAA-1) obtained in Example 1 and the liquid crystal aligning agent (PAA-5) obtained in Comparative Example 2 were mixed so that the mass ratio of each was 3:7 (PAA-5:PAA-1), and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 3 hours to prepare a liquid crystal aligning agent (PAA-b-1) of Example 4. In addition, the liquid crystal aligning agents (PAA-b-2) to (PAA-b-4) of Examples 5 to 6 and Comparative Example 3 shown in Table 4 below were prepared by carrying out the same procedure as in Example 4, except that the combination of liquid crystal aligning agents used was changed to that shown in Table 4 below.
[0095] [Measurement of Refractive Index of Liquid Crystal Alignment Film] The liquid crystal alignment agents prepared in Examples 1 to 3 and Comparative Example 1 were spin-coated onto a silicon wafer, dried on a hot plate at 70°C for 90 seconds, and then baked in a hot air circulating oven at 230°C for 20 minutes to form a liquid crystal alignment film with a thickness of 100 nm. Next, a spectroscopic ellipsometer M-2000 (manufactured by J.A. Woollam) was used to measure the refractive index at wavelengths of 250 to 800 nm using a CAUCHY model fitting. The results are shown in Table 5. Table 5 also lists the refractive index at a wavelength of 550 nm. As an evaluation standard, a refractive index of 1.630 or higher was rated "excellent," and a refractive index of less than 1.630 was rated "unacceptable."
[0096] [Measurement of Transmittance of Liquid Crystal Alignment Film] A measurement cell was prepared using two quartz substrates. The liquid crystal alignment agents prepared in Examples 1 to 3 and Comparative Example 1 were spin-coated onto the quartz substrates, dried on a hot plate at 70°C for 90 seconds, and then baked in a hot air circulating oven at 230°C for 20 minutes to form a 100 nm-thick liquid crystal alignment film. A quartz substrate without a liquid crystal alignment film was attached to the substrate, with the liquid crystal alignment film facing inward. A refractive index liquid (Shimadzu Device Mfg. Co., Ltd., Contact Liquid) was inserted between the substrates using a dropper to prepare a measurement cell. Eleven refractive index liquids were selected from 1.60 to 1.70 in 0.01 increments to match the respective refractive indices. The transmittance of the prepared measurement cell was measured at wavelengths of 380 to 800 nm using a UV-visible spectrophotometer (Shimadzu Corporation, UV-2600).
[0097] The results are shown in Table 5. Table 5 lists the average values of transmittance in the wavelength range of 380 to 800 nm. As evaluation criteria, a transmittance of more than 99.90% was rated as "excellent," a transmittance of 99.90% or less but more than 99.0% was rated as "passable," and a transmittance of 99.0% or less was rated as "unacceptable."
[0098] As shown in Table 5, the liquid crystal alignment films obtained from the liquid crystal alignment agents using the specific diamines (DA-1) to (DA-3) exhibited a higher refractive index than the liquid crystal alignment films obtained from the liquid crystal alignment agents composed of diamine components not containing the specific diamines. In addition, the liquid crystal alignment films obtained from the liquid crystal alignment agents using the specific diamines (DA-1) to (DA-3) exhibited a high light transmittance.
[0099] [Preparation of Liquid Crystal Alignment Film and Liquid Crystal Cell] Liquid crystal cells were prepared as follows using the liquid crystal alignment agents prepared in Examples 4 to 6 and Comparative Example 3 above. Each liquid crystal alignment agent was spin-coated onto the ITO surface of an ITO electrode substrate on which an ITO electrode pattern with a pixel size of 100 μm x 300 μm and a line / space of 5 μm each was formed, dried on a hot plate at 70°C for 90 seconds, and then baked in a hot air circulating oven at 230°C for 30 minutes to form a liquid crystal alignment film with a thickness of 100 nm. The liquid crystal alignment agent was also spin-coated onto the ITO surface on which no electrode pattern was formed, dried on a hot plate at 70°C for 90 seconds, and then baked in a hot air circulating oven at 230°C for 20 minutes to form a liquid crystal alignment film with a thickness of 100 nm. For the two substrates described above, 4 μm bead spacers were sprayed onto the liquid crystal alignment film of one of the substrates, and then a sealant (Mitsui Chemicals, Inc., XN-1500T) was printed on top of them. Next, the other substrate was bonded to the previous substrate with the side on which the liquid crystal alignment film was formed facing inward, and the sealant was then thermally cured to prepare an empty cell. A liquid crystal containing a polymerizable compound for PSA (MLC-3023, manufactured by Merck, a negative liquid crystal) was injected into this empty cell by a reduced pressure injection method to prepare a liquid crystal cell. Then, with a DC voltage of 15 V applied to this liquid crystal cell, ultraviolet light was applied from the outside of the liquid crystal cell at 10 J / cm through a filter that cuts off wavelengths of 325 nm or less. 2 The illuminance of the ultraviolet light was measured using a UV-MO3A manufactured by ORC Corporation. Thereafter, in order to deactivate any unreacted polymerizable compound remaining in the liquid crystal cell, the liquid crystal cell was irradiated with ultraviolet light (UV lamp: FLR40SUV32 / A-1) for 30 minutes using a UV-FL irradiation device (manufactured by Toshiba Lighting & Technology Corporation) in the absence of applied voltage.
[0100] [Evaluation of vertical alignment] The evaluation of the vertical alignment of each liquid crystal cell prepared as described above is shown in Table 6. The evaluation method is as follows. Each liquid crystal cell was sandwiched between crossed Nicol polarizers, and with a backlight irradiated from the rear, the liquid crystal cell was rotated, and the change in brightness was visually observed to determine whether the liquid crystal was vertically aligned. The evaluation criteria were "Good" when the liquid crystal was vertically aligned, and "Poor" when the liquid crystal was not vertically aligned. The results are shown in Table 6. As shown in Table 6, the liquid crystal alignment films obtained from the liquid crystal aligning agents using the specific diamines (DA-1) to (DA-3) exhibited good vertical alignment properties.
