Abstract
The present invention relates to an active pre-surgical orthopedic device for the treatment of neonates with cleft lip and / or palate. The Ávalos Active Obturator Plate (AOP) comprises an acrylic body segmented into anterior and posterior portions, functionally joined by cuts directed toward the incisive foramen and activated by modified Coffin springs that generate constant orthopedic forces to approximate the maxillary segments. The device also incorporates one or more extraoral stems with a groove for the placement of traction elastics, which complement the maxillary movement produced by the internal springs. Furthermore, it integrates anatomical nasal conformers designed to exert three-dimensional shaping on the vertex, columella, and alar cartilages, improving nasal symmetry prior to primary surgery. The POAA provides continuous activation, three-dimensional maxillary-nasal control, progressive reduction of the alveolar cleft, and rigid nasal shaping, without requiring extraoral adhesives or surgical fixation. The device can be manufactured using traditional acrylic casting or digital CAD / CAM techniques and 3D printing, meeting the requirements of novelty, inventive step, and industrial application.
