AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing power converters face challenges in maximizing output power while preventing excessive temperature, as current limiting methods often reduce power before reaching the maximum permissible temperature, leading to inefficient operation and lower output power.

Method used

A control device for power converters that incorporates a temperature determination and estimation system to calculate future temperature profiles, allowing for dynamic adjustment of maximum electric current based on current and future temperature conditions, enabling operation closer to the permissible temperature limit without premature derating.

Benefits of technology

This approach allows for more efficient operation of power converters by maximizing output power while ensuring the temperature does not exceed critical limits, reducing unnecessary current limitations and maintaining safe operating conditions.

Abstract

The present invention relates to an electric current converter having an expanded control system for the temperature-dependent limitation of the maximum current. Wherein, to limit the maximum electric current in the current converter, not only is the current temperature of the current converter evaluated, but also the temperature development to be anticipated is estimated. Including the future temperature development in the control of the current limitation of the current converter allows the current converter to be operated closer to its limit temperature, and therefore the current does not need to be limited (derated) until a later time.
