Description

[0001] Pest Control Composition

[0002] The present invention relates to a pest control composition comprising prallethrin and metofluthrin, to a pest control product comprising said composition and to the use of the composition or the pest control product to kill, knock-down or repel insects.

[0003] Background

[0004] Pyrethrins refer to a group of closely related esters extracted from the Pyrethrum flower (Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium). These compounds are effective pesticides. Pyrethroids are a group of synthetic compounds chemically related to pyrethrin which exhibit insecticidal activity. For example, permethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid useful for killing adult mosquitoes.

[0005] Pyrethroids tend to have a relatively low degree of toxicity to humans and animals and hence are desirable to use for pest control.

[0006] Aerosol formulations containing pyrethroids have the added desirability of effectively delivering small amounts of insecticide due to the dispersion of the active ingredient and penetrating nature of an aerosol spray.

[0007] International patent application WO2020 / 256881 A1 to S.C. Johnson & Son, Inc. relates to an aerosol insecticidal composition comprising at least two active ingredients, which effectively knocks down and kills both flying and crawling insects. This document describes the combination of transfluthrin and imiprothrin to provide immediate knockdown and lasting mortality. In the examples shown in this document, compositions comprising transfluthrin and imiprothrin perform equally as well as, if not better than, compositions comprising prallethrin and d-phenothrin in the percent knock-down of the flying and crawling insects tested therein.

[0008] International patent application WO2018 / 217554 A1 to S.C. Johnson & Son, Inc. relates to an aerosol insecticidal composition comprising at least three active ingredients, which is effective against both flying and crawling insects. This document describes compositions comprising prallethrin, transfluthrin, and cypermethrin to knockdown and / or kill flying and crawling insects. In the examples shown in this document, compositions comprising prallethrin, cypermethrin, and transfluthrin, perform equally as well as, if not better than, compositions comprising: prallethrin and d-phenothrin; or cypermethrin, imiprothrin, and prallethrin; or Imiprothrin, prallethrin, and cyfluthrin; or imiprothrin and cyfluthrin; or d-phenothrin and prallethrin; or d-tetramethrin, d- phenothrin, and prallethrin; in the percent knockdown or knockdown of the flying and crawling insects tested therein.

[0009] However, aerosols do not allow for the continuous release of actives having insecticide activity.

[0010] One way of releasing actives with insecticide activity continuously or semi-continuously during a certain period of time is by providing an insecticide composition in a container attached to an emanation device, as described in patent application WO 2013 / 144596 A1. This emanation device can be, for example, an electric heating device, such as a liquid vaporiser (LV) or a liquid electrical device (LED), a piezo electric diffuser (PED) or an ambient emanation device. However, these devices are normally targeted to repel and / or knockdown flying insects. The active vapours of current formulations are believed to rise from the device and give only protection from flying insects.

[0011] One pyrethroid with low toxicity to humans and birds is prallethrin. This is commonly used in liquid vaporisers as a repellent insecticide for mosquitoes. However, prallethrin is not effective against crawling insects.

[0012] Therefore, there is a need of a pest control composition containing prallethrin, which can be used with an emanation device and that targets both flying and crawling insects. The composition should have a low degree of toxicity to humans and to domestic animals in order to meet the regulatory requirements of various countries where they are intended to be used.

[0013] It is an object of the present invention to provide a pest control composition and a pest control product that repel, knock-down and / or kill flying and crawling insects.

[0040] In a first aspect, the present invention relates to a pest control composition comprising: prallethrin, metofluthrin, and a solvent.

[0041] The present inventors have observed that by combining prallethrin with metofluthrin a synergistic effect is achieved. This means that either the %KD achieved by the combination of pyrethroids is higher than when prallethrin is used alone, or that a lower amount of the combined pyrethroids is needed to achieve a certain %KD or bio-efficacy than when only prallethrin is used.

[0042] In addition, the composition according to the invention targets not only flying insects, but also crawling insects.

[0043] The composition may comprise between 0.05 wt.% and 10 wt.% prallethrin, based on the total weight of the composition, preferably between 0.1 wt.% and 7.5 wt.%, more preferably between 0.25 wt.% and 5 wt.%, most preferably between 0.4 wt.% and 2.5 wt.%, even more preferably between 0.5 wt.% and 1.75 wt.%.

[0044] Regarding the amount of metofluthrin in the composition, in an embodiment, the weight ratio prallethrin : metofluthrin is between 1 :0.05 and 1 :0.75, preferably between 1 :0.1 and 1 :0.5, more preferably between 1 :0.15 and 1 :0.25.

[0045] The present inventors have observed that, when the compositions are used in an emanation device, these amounts of prallethrin and metofluthrin are capable of controlling flying insects and crawling insects.

[0046] The composition may further contain another pyrethroid, namely transfluthrin. In an embodiment, the weight ratio prallethrin : transfluthrin is between 1 :0.1 and 1 :0.9, preferably between 1 :0.25 and 1 :0.8, more preferably between 1 :0.5 and 1 :0.75.

[0047] When the composition comprises prallethrin, metofluthrin and transfluthrin, it is possible to formulate compositions with a lower total amount of actives but with an acceptable bio-efficacy.

[0048] In an embodiment, the only pyrethroids in the composition are prallethrin and metofluthrin. In another embodiment, the only pyrethroids in the composition are prallethrin, metofluthrin, and transfluthrin. The compositions according to the invention comprise a solvent, which is needed for allowing the composition to be released into the air. This can be non-aqueous or aqueous.

[0049] In the case of a non-aqueous solvent, the solvent may comprise at least one aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon solvent, preferably at least one aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent. The solvent may comprise hydrocarbons selected from the group consisting of alcohols, n-paraffins, isoparaffins, cyclo-paraffins, and combinations thereof. The paraffin may be short-chain paraffin with a carbon chain length < C13, medium-chain paraffins with a carbon chain length C14 to C17, long-chain paraffins with a carbon chain length > Cis, or a combination of paraffins, i.e. a blend of paraffins.

[0050] In an embodiment, the non-aqueous solvent comprises at least one aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon solvent, preferably selected from the group of hydrocarbon solvents having a flash point of at least 50°C, more preferably having a flash point of at least 60°C, even more preferably having a flash point between 60°C and 150°C, most preferably having a flash point between 60°C and 140°C and / or having a boiling point of at least 150°C, preferably having a boiling point of at least 200°C, more preferably having a boiling point between 200°C and 500 °C, even more preferably having a boiling point between 200°C and 400°C.

[0051] In a preferred embodiment, the non-aqueous solvent comprises at least one aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon solvent selected from the group of hydrocarbon solvents: having a flash point of at least 50°C, more preferably having a flash point of at least 60°C, even more preferably having a flash point between 60°C and 150°C, most preferably having a flash point between 60°C and 140 °C; and having a boiling point of at least 150°C, preferably having a boiling point of at least 200°C, more preferably having a boiling point between 200°C and 500°C, even more preferably having a boiling point between 200°C and 400°C.

[0052] It is important that the solvent has a flash point of at least 50°C and preferably a boiling point of at least 200°C as this would allow the composition to be used in an emanation device, for example, an electric heating device, such as a liquid vaporiser (LV) or a liquid electrical device (LED), a piezo electric diffuser (PED) or an ambient emanation device. Preferably said at least one hydrocarbon comprises a blend of short-chain paraffins and medium-chain paraffins.

[0053] The hydrocarbon solvent is preferably dearomatized and deodorized and comprises normal paraffins, iso-paraffins and cyclo-paraffins. By dearomatized it is meant that the hydrocarbon solvent contains less than 2 wt.% aromatics. Examples of these hydrocarbons are ExxsolTMD80 and ExxsolTMD130.

[0054] When the solvent is aqueous, it comprises water, one or more surfactants and one or more alcohols. [0055] The one or more surfactants may comprise non-ionic surfactants, anionic surfactants, amphoteric surfactants, or a blend thereof. The one or more surfactants preferably comprise one or more non-ionic surfactants such as for example poly-glycerol oleate, or a blend. Other non-ionic surfactants that can be used include for example fatty acid, fatty alcohol, and amine, ethoxylates, propoxylates and ethoxylate / propoxylate combinations; mono-, di- and tri-sorbitan esters; mono- and d-glycerides; polyoxyethylene sorbitol esters; glycol ether; and blends thereof.

[0056] Preferably the one or more surfactants comprise or consist of one or more non-ionic surfactants. Examples of preferred non-ionic surfactants are spans (sorbitan esters) and tweens (Ethoxylated sorbitan esters or polysorbates).

[0057] Independently of the type of solvent that is used in the composition, this may comprise at least 90 wt.% of said solvent, based on the total weight of the composition, preferably at least 91 wt.%, more preferably at least 92 wt.%, even more preferably at least 93 wt.%, most preferably at least 94 wt.%, for example, at least 95 wt.%.

[0058] The composition may further comprise additional components. For example, it may contain a perfume or fragrance, and / or an antioxidant. The perfume may comprise a natural or a synthetic oil or a blend, for example pine oil, neem oil, thyme oil, citronella oil, eucalyptus oil, lemon grass oil and combinations thereof.

[0059] It will be understood that when a perfume is added, the amount of this ingredient is such that it cannot be considered an active ingredient in the composition. For example, when the composition comprises less than about 2 wt.% of perfume, based on the total weight of the composition, this perfume does not have any impact on the bio-efficacy of the composition. The antioxidant is preferably butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), or butylated hydroxyanisole. In an embodiment, the composition comprises from 0.001 wt.% to 5 wt. % of an antioxidant, based on the total weight of the composition, preferably 0.1 wt.% to 4 wt.%, more preferably 0.5 wt.% to 2 wt.%, even more preferably 0.5 wt.% to 1 wt.%.

[0060] The composition according to the invention is suitable for use in an emanation device, such as an electric heating device, a piezo electric diffuser or an ambient emanation device. Hence, the composition does not need to contain any propellant, as in the case of aerosols.

[0061] In an embodiment, the composition is free of any propellants.

[0062] A preferred composition may comprise: at least 95 wt.% of a solvent comprising hydrocarbons selected from the group consisting of alcohols, n-paraffins, isoparaffins, cycloparaffins, and combinations thereof, preferably a blend of short-chain paraffins and mediumchain paraffins; between 0.5 wt.% and 1 .75 wt.% of prallethrin, based on the total weight of the composition; and metofluthin; wherein the weight ratio prallethrin : metofluthrin is between 1 :0.15 and 1 :0.25, and wherein the composition is free of any propellants.

[0063] Another preferred composition may comprise: at least 95 wt.% of a solvent comprising hydrocarbons selected from the group consisting of alcohols, n-paraffins, isoparaffins, cycloparaffins, and combinations thereof, preferably a blend of short-chain paraffins and mediumchain paraffins; between 0.5 wt.% and 1 .75 wt.% of prallethrin, based on the total weight of the composition; metofluthin; and transfluthrin wherein the weight ratio prallethrin : metofluthrin is between 1 :0.15 and 1 :0.25; wherein the weight ratio prallethrin : transfluthrin is between 1 :0.5 and 1 :0.75; and wherein the composition is free of any propellants. The composition may be an insect repellent composition or an insecticide composition.

[0064] In a second aspect, the invention relates to a pest control product comprising the composition according to the first aspect of the invention and an emanation device, wherein said emanation device is selected from the group comprising an electric heating device, a piezo electric diffuser and an ambient emanation device, wherein the pest control composition is emanated from the emanation device.

[0065] The pest control product may be an insect repellent product or an insecticide product.

[0066] It will be understood that the composition will be contained in a container attached to the emanation device and once the emanation device is being operated, the vapours of the composition would act as insecticide and / or repellent.

[0067] In an embodiment the emanation rate of the pest control product, when the product is operated, is between 0.05 to 0.5 g / h, preferably between 0.05 to 0.4 g / h, more preferably between 0.05 to 0.3 g / h. For example, if a pest control product comprising an emanation device and a composition according to the first aspect of the invention is operated, the difference in weight of the product during a determined period of time will give the emanation rate.

[0068] The heating device can be a liquid vaporiser or a liquid electrical device. In a liquid vaporiser a composition is evaporated by an electric heater through a porous wick from a reservoir bottle containing the liquid. For a pest control composition, the composition lasts for a predetermined period. The skilled person will understand that a refill is used for about 4 to 10 hours per day, meaning that the total life-time of a refill can be from 25 to 90 days with an average use of 8 hours per day.

[0069] In a piezo electric diffuser, a composition is ejected into the air by a diffuser comprising an orifice plate which is vibrated by an actuator made of a piezoelectric material. Upon application of an alternating electrical field across the piezoelectric actuator it expands and contracts and causes the orifice plate to vibrate. The vibrating orifice plate contacts a liquid and, as a result, liquid droplets are propelled ultrasonically through the orifices in the plate and ejected into the atmosphere.

[0070] In an ambient emanation device, a substrate such as paper, plastic, or a synthetic or natural gel are impregnated with a composition, and the composition is evaporated at ambient temperature without the need for an external source of energy. Examples of synthetic or natural gel are agarose-based gels, xanthan gum, styrene- ethylene / butylene-styrene (SEBS) copolymers, styrene-ethylene / propylene-styrene (SEPS) copolymers, and fumed silica gel.

[0071] In a third aspect, the invention relates to the use of the composition according to the first aspect of the invention or the pest control product according to the second aspect of the invention to kill, knock-down and / or repel insects, preferably the insects are flying and / or crawling insects.

[0072] In an embodiment the invention relates to the use of the composition according to the first aspect of the invention or the pest control product according to the second aspect of the invention to kill, knock-down or repel flying insects and crawling insects.

[0073] In another embodiment, the flying insects are mosquitoes and flies, preferably mosquitoes and houseflies.

[0074] The invention will be further described with the reference to the following examples.

[0075] Examples

[0076] Formulations

[0077] Comparative formulations comprising either only prallethrin (Formulation C1) or prallethrin and transfluthrin (Formulation C2) were prepared. Furthermore, formulations according to the invention comprising prallethrin and metofluthrin were also prepared (Formulations F1 and F2) or prallethrin, metofluthrin and transfluthrin (Formulation F3). The formulations are shown in Table 1.

[0078] Table 1. Formulations

[0079] In Table 1 , q.s. refers to the amount of solvent needed to achieve 100% of the formulation. The Solvent for formulations C3, and F1-F3 comprises a mixture of deodorised and de- aromatised hydrocarbon solvents, specifically a combination of Exxsol TM D80 and Exxsol TM D130. In addition, formulations C3, and F1-F3 contain about 1 wt.% of Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and about 1wt.% of a fragrance, based on the total weight of the formulations. The mixture of deodorised and de-aromatised hydrocarbon solvents comprises a hydrocarbon solvent having a flash point of 80°C and a hydrocarbon solvent having a flashpoint of 130°C. These hydrocarbon solvents have a boiling point between 250°C and 380°C.

[0080] Performance tests

[0081] Flying insects

[0082] Knock-down experiments - mosquitoes and houseflies

[0083] Formulations shown in Table 1 were tested according to the Peet-Grady Chamber test using Culex mosquitoes and houseflies (Musca domestica). In the chamber, the formulation to be tested was placed in a liquid vaporiser and after 60 minutes the knockdown percentage (% KD) of the insects and the amount of formulation that was emanated were measured. The amount of formulation that was emanated (Amount emanated) is given by the weight difference between the formulation at the end and at the beginning of the test. The bio-efficacy of the formulations was determined by measuring the % KD of mosquitos or houseflies. In addition, the time needed to knockdown 50% of the insects, i.e. KT50, was also recorded.

[0084] Table 2. Performance tests using a Peet-Grady Chamber with mosquitoes or houseflies.

[0085] It was observed that he combination of prallethrin with metofluthrin has a synergistic effect. For mosquitoes, for example, when prallethrin was combined with metofluthrin a lower amount of total actives (1.3 x 10-3g) was needed to achieve a lower KT50 than when prallethrin alone (2.8x1 O'3g) was used. For mosquitoes, when prallethrin was combined with metofluthrin, a lower amount of total actives (5.0 x 10-3g) was needed to achieve a lower KT50 than when prallethrin was combined with only transfluthrin (7.9 x 10'3g).

[0086] Furthermore, it was observed that when prallethrin was combined with metofluthrin and transfluthrin, it is possible to achieve a %KD of 100 and drastically reduce the KT50 for houseflies.

[0087] In short, it was observed that the combination of prallethrin with metofluthrin or with metofluthrin and transfluthrin has a higher bio-efficacy than the pyrethroids alone.

[0088] Crawling insects

[0089] Knock-down experiments - roaches

[0090] Formulations shown in Table 1 were tested according to the small glass chamber test using American cockroaches. In the chamber, the formulation to be tested was placed in a liquid vaporiser and after 60 minutes the knock-down percentage (%KD) of the insects was measured. These results are shown in Table 3.

[0091] Table 3. Knock-down and killing efficacy

[0092] The results in Table 3 clearly show that for crawling insects, when prallethrin was combined with metofluthrin a lower amount of total actives (1.4 x 10'3g) was needed to achieve a higher % KD than when prallethrin alone (3.5 x 10-3g) was used.

[0093] Furthermore, it was observed that when prallethrin was combined with metofluthrin and transfluthrin, it is possible to achieve a %KD of 100 much faster and with a lower amount of emanated actives (3.8 xw3g) than when prallethrin was combined only with transfluthrin (5.7 xw3g). The formulations according to the invention knock-down or kill, not only flying insects but also of crawling insects. In particular, formulations comprising prallethrin, metofluthrin, and transfluthrin showed excellent bio-efficacy against flying insects, such as mosquitoes and flies, and against crawling insects, such as cockroaches. Hence one or more objects of the present invention are achieved by the present which is further elucidated in the appended claims.
