Description

WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS WITH AMBIENT INTERNET OF THINGS DEVICESTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] This application relates to wireless communication systems, and more particularly, to improving wireless communications between ambient Internet of Things (IoT) devices and other wireless communication devices, especially selecting an assistance node to assist a wireless communication between an ambient IoT device and a wireless communication device.

[0002] INTRODUCTION

[0003] Wireless communications systems are widely deployed to provide various types of communication content such as voice, video, packet data, messaging, broadcast, and so on. These systems may be capable of supporting communication with multiple users by sharing the available system resources (e.g., time, frequency, and power) .

[0004] Examples of such multiple-access systems include fourth generation (4G) systems such as Long Term Evolution (LTE) systems, LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) systems, or LTE-A Pro systems, and fifth generation (5G) systems which may be referred to as New Radio (NR) systems. These systems may employ technologies such as code division multiple access (CDMA) , time division multiple access (TDMA) , frequency division multiple access (FDMA) , orthogonal FDMA (OFDMA) , or discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-S-OFDM) . A wireless multiple-access communications system may include one or more base stations, each supporting wireless communication for communication devices, which may be passive IoT devices.

[0005] To meet the growing demands for expanded mobile broadband connectivity, wireless communication technologies are advancing from the LTE technology to a next generation NR technology. For example, NR is expanding to enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) , e.g., ultra-reliable low latency communications (UR LLC) and machine type communication (MTC) . NR may be extended to support passive IoT, e.g., supporting radio frequency identification (RFID) sensors in use cases.

[0024] The detailed description set forth below, in connection with the appended drawings, is intended as a description of various configurations and is not intended to represent the only configurations in which the concepts described herein may be practiced. The detailed description includes specific details for the purpose of providing a thorough understanding of the various concepts. However, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that these concepts may be practiced without these specific details. In some instances, well-known structures and components are shown in block diagram form in order to avoid obscuring such concepts.

[0025] This disclosure relates generally to wireless communications systems, also referred to as wireless communications networks. In various instances, the techniques and apparatus may be used for wireless communication networks such as code division multiple access (CDMA) networks, time division multiple access (TDMA) networks, frequency division multiple access (FDMA) networks, orthogonal FDMA (OFDMA) networks, single-carrier FDMA (SC-FDMA) networks, LTE networks, GSM networks, 5th Generation (5G) or new radio (NR) networks, as well as other communications networks. As described herein, the terms “networks” and “systems” may be used interchangeably.

[0026] Various other aspects and features of the disclosure are further described below. It should be apparent that the teachings herein may be embodied in a wide variety of forms and that any specific structure, function, or both being disclosed herein is merely  representative and not limiting. Based on the teachings herein one of an ordinary level of skill in the art should appreciate that an aspect disclosed herein may be implemented independently of any other aspects and that two or more of these aspects may be combined in various ways. For example, an apparatus may be implemented or a method may be practiced using any number of the aspects set forth herein. In addition, such an apparatus may be implemented or such a method may be practiced using other structure, functionality, or structure and functionality in addition to or other than one or more of the aspects set forth herein. For example, a method may be implemented as part of a system, device, apparatus, and / or as instructions stored on a computer readable medium for execution on a processor or computer. Furthermore, an aspect may include at least one element of a claim.

[0027] RFID is a rapidly growing technology in many industries because RFID technologies provide high economic potential in the fields of asset management, IoT, sustainable sensor networks, smart home, and the like. RFID may include small transponders emitting an information-bearing signal upon receiving a signal, such that RFID is able to be operated without a battery at low operating expense. As 5G is expanding to more industrial verticals besides eMBB, e.g., URLLC and MTC, 5G and beyond may be expanded to support passive IoT. A backscatter-based device (e.g., a passive ambient IoT device) may be powered by a base station (BS) and communicate with the BS, and a third node (e.g., another BS or another UE that is not the communication device associated with the ambient IoT device) may be used as an assistance node to assist the energy link and / or the communication link between the ambient IoT device and the BS. Therefore, a method for selecting a third node as a relay in a communication between a BS and an ambient IoT device may be considered. For example, a method for selecting the third node may include considering whether the BS or the ambient IoT device needs the third node (e.g., an assistance node) in the communication. Furthermore, the method for selecting the third node may include re-selecting another third node when the originally selected third node may no longer be suitable to assist the communication between the BS and the ambient IoT device.

[0028] Various aspects relate generally to wireless communication and more particularly to a wireless communication with an ambient IoT device. Some aspects more specifically relate to a wireless communication between a BS and an ambient IoT device, and the ambient IoT device is powered by a wireless communication device. An assistance node (e.g., a third node that is not the BS communicating with the ambient  IoT device) may be needed in the wireless communication in response to certain incidents. For example, when the energy conversion efficiency (e.g., an energy loss) and / or the quality of the communication link (e.g., a failure of data transmission) between the BS and the ambient IoT device is getting worse, the BS (or the ambient IoT device) may be trigger to select an assistance node to assist the wireless communication between the BS and the ambient IoT device. As such, the transmission quality and the efficiency of the wireless communication between the B S and the ambient IoT device may be improved.

[0029] Additionally or alternatively, the B S (or the ambient IoT device) may further select a new assistance node to assist the wireless communication between the BS and the ambient IoT device, if the performance of the originally selected assistance node. For example, the BS (or the ambient IoT device) may monitor the energy conversion efficiency and / or the quality of the communication link associated with the originally selected assistance node, and select a new assistance node if any of the energy conversion efficiency and the quality of the communication link associated with the originally selected assistance node reduces. As such, the performance of the wireless communication between the BS and the ambient IoT device can be efficiently and continuously maintained.

[0030] Particular aspects of the subject matter described in this disclosure may be implemented to realize one or more of the following potential advantages. In some examples, by implementing wireless communication procedure according to embodiments of the present disclosure, the described techniques may be used to support transmission of RFID sensors in NR technology and improve transmission efficiency in terms of selecting a proper, suitable assistance node as a relay in the wireless communication procedure. For example, the described techniques may reduce power waste by selecting an assistance node in the wireless communication procedure when the energy conversion efficiency of the wireless communication procedure decreases. Furthermore, the described techniques may improve the quality of data transmission by selecting the assistance node in the wireless communication procedure when the quality of the communication link in the wireless communication procedure compromises.

[0031] FIG. 1 illustrates a wireless communication network 100, according to some aspects of the present disclosure. The network 100 includes a number of base stations (BSs) 105 and other network entities. In some aspects, a BS 105 may be interchangeable with a network node, and not limited to base stations. A BS 105 may be a station that  communicates with UEs 115 and / or an internet of things (IoT) device 120 and may also be referred to as an evolved node B (eNB) , a next generation eNB (gNB) , an access point, and the like. Each BS 105 may provide communication coverage for a particular geographic area. In 3GPP, the term “cell” may refer to this particular geographic coverage area ofa BS 105 and / or a BS subsystem serving the coverage area, depending on the context in which the term is used.

[0032] A BS 105 may provide communication coverage for a macro cell or a small cell, such as a pico cell or a femto cell, and / or other types of cell. A macro cell generally covers a relatively large geographic area (e.g., several kilometers in radius) and may allow unrestricted access by UEs with service subscriptions with the network provider. A small cell, such as a pico cell, would generally cover a relatively smaller geographic area and may allow unrestricted access by UEs with service subscriptions with the network provider. A small cell, such as a femto cell, would also generally cover a relatively small geographic area (e.g., a home) and, in addition to unrestricted access, may also provide restricted access by UEs having an association with the femto cell (e.g., UEs in a closed subscriber group (CSG) , UEs for users in the home, and the like) . A BS for a macro cell may be referred to as a macro BS. A BS for a small cell may be referred to as a small cell BS, apico BS, a femto BS or ahome BS. In the example shown in FIG. 1, the BSs 105d and 105e may be regular macro BSs, while the BSs 105a-105c may be macro BSs enabled with one of three dimension (3D) , full dimension (FD) , or massive MIMO. The BSs 105a-105c may take advantage of their higher dimension MIMO capabilities to exploit 3D beamforming in both elevation and azimuth beamforming to increase coverage and capacity. The BS 105fmay be a small cell BS which may be a home node or portable access point. A BS 105 may support one or multiple (e.g., two, three, four, and the like) cells.

[0033] The network 100 may support synchronous or asynchronous operation. For synchronous operation, the BSs may have similar frame timing, and transmissions from different BSs may be approximately aligned in time. For asynchronous operation, the BSs may have different frame timing, and transmissions from different BSs may not be aligned in time.

[0034] The UEs 115 and / or IoT devices 120 may be dispersed throughout the wireless network 100, and each UE 115 and / or IOT device 120 may be stationary or mobile. A UE 115 may also be referred to as a terminal, a mobile station, a subscriber unit, a station, or the like. A UE 115 may be a cellular phone, a personal digital assistant  (PDA) , a wireless modem, a wireless communication device, a handheld device, a tablet computer, a laptop computer, a cordless phone, a wireless local loop (WLL) station, or the like. In one aspect, a UE 115 may be a device that includes a Universal Integrated Circuit Card (UICC) . In another aspect, a UE may be a device that does not include a UICC. In some aspects, the UEs 115 that do not include UICCs may also be referred to as IoT devices 120 or internet of everything (IoE) devices. The UEs 115 a-115d are examples of mobile smart phone-type devices accessing network 100. A UE 115 may also be a machine specifically configured for connected communication, including machine type communication (MTC) , enhanced MTC (eMTC) , narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) and the like. The UEs 115e-115h are examples of various machines configured for communication that access the network 100. The IoT devices 120 may include one or more sensors and be configured for communication with a BS 105 and / or a UE 115. The UEs 115i-115k are examples of vehicles equipped with wireless communication devices configured for communication that access the network 100. A UE 115 may be able to communicate with any type of the BSs, whether macro BS, small cell, or the like. In FIG. 1, a lightning bolt (e.g., communication links) indicates wireless transmissions between devices. For example, a lightning bolt mat indicate wireless transmissions between a UE 115 and a serving BS 105, which is a BS designated to serve the UE 115 on the downlink (DL) and / or uplink (UL) , desired transmission between BSs 105, backhaul transmissions between B Ss, or sidelink transmissions between UEs 115.

[0035] In operation, the BSs 105a-105c may serve the UEs 115a and 115b using 3D beamforming and coordinated spatial techniques, such as coordinated multipoint (CoMP) or multi-connectivity. The macro BS 105d may perform backhaul communications with the BSs 105a-105c, as well as small cell, the BS 105f. The macro B S 105d may also transmits multicast services which are subscribed to and received by the UEs 115c and 115d. Such multicast services may include mobile television or stream video, or may include other services for providing community information, such as weather emergencies or alerts, such as Amber alerts or gray alerts.

[0036] The BSs 105 may also communicate with a core network. The core network may provide user authentication, access authorization, tracking, Internet Protocol (IP) connectivity, and other access, routing, or mobility functions. At least some of the BSs 105 (e.g., which may be an example of an evolved NodeB (eNB) or an access node controller (ANC) ) may interface with the core network 130 through backhaul links (e.g., S1, S2, etc. ) and may perform radio configuration and scheduling for communication  with the UEs 115. In various examples, the BSs 105 may communicate, either directly or indirectly (e.g., through core network) , with each other over backhaul links (e.g., Xl, X2, etc. ) , which may be wired or wireless communication links.

[0037] The network 100 may also support mission critical communications with ultra-reliable and redundant links for mission critical devices, such as the UE 115e, which may be a vehicle (e.g., a car, a truck, a bus, an autonomous vehicle, an aircraft, a boat, etc. ) . Redundant communication links with the UE 115e may include links from the macro BSs 105d and 105e, as well as links from the small cell BS 105f. Other machine type devices, such as the UE 115f (e.g., a thermometer) , the UE 115g (e.g., smart meter) , the UE 115h (e.g., wearable device) , and the IoT device 120 (e.g., a RFID sensor) may communicate through the network 100 either directly with B Ss, such as the small cell BS 105f, and the macro BSs 105d and 105e, or in multi-hop configurations by communicating with another user device which relays its information to the network, such as the UE 115f communicating temperature measurement information to the smart meter, the UE 115g, which is then reported to the network through the small cell BS 105f. In some aspects, the UE 115h may harvest energy from an ambient environment associated with the UE 115h. In some aspects, the IoT device 120 may harvest energy from an ambient environment associated with the IoT device 120. For example, the IoT device 120 may be an ambient IoT device that may harvest energy from the BS 105d or the UE 115d. The network 100 may also provide additional network efficiency through dynamic, low-latency TDD / FDD communications, such as vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) , vehicle-to-everything (V2X) , cellular-vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) communications between a UE 115i, 115j, or 115k and other UEs 115, and / or vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications between a UE 115i, 115j, or 115k and a BS 105.

[0038] In some implementations, the network 100 utilizes OFDM-based waveforms for communications. An OFDM-based system may partition the system BW into multiple (K) orthogonal subcarriers, which are also commonly referred to as subcarriers, tones, bins, or the like. Each subcarrier may be modulated with data. In some instances, the subcarrier spacing between adjacent subcarriers may be fixed, and the total number of subcarriers (K) may be dependent on the system BW. The system BW may also be partitioned into subbands. In other instances, the subcarrier spacing and / or the duration of TTIs may be scalable.

[0039] In some instances, the BSs 105 may assign or schedule transmission resources (e.g., in the form of time-frequency resource blocks (RB) ) for downlink (DL) and uplink  (UL) transmissions in the network 100. DL refers to the transmission direction from a BS 105 to a UE 115, whereas UL refers to the transmission direction from a UE 115 to a BS 105. The communication may be in the form of radio frames. A radio frame may be divided into a plurality of subframes, for example, about 10. Each subframe may be divided into slots, for example, about 2. Each slot may be further divided into mini-slots. In a FDD mode, simultaneous UL and DL transmissions may occur in different frequency bands. For example, each subframe includes a UL subframe in a UL frequency band and a DL subframe in a DL frequency band. In a TDD mode, UL and DL transmissions occur at different time periods using the same frequency band. For example, a subset of the subframes (e.g., DL subframes) in a radio frame may be used for DL transmissions and another subset of the subframes (e.g., UL subframes) in the radio frame may be used for UL transmissions.

[0040] The DL subframes and the UL subframes may be further divided into several regions. For example, each DL or UL subframe may have pre-defined regions for transmissions of reference signals, control information, and data. Reference signals are predetermined signals that facilitate the communications between the BSs 105 and the UEs 115. For example, a reference signal may have a particular pilot pattern or structure, where pilot tones may span across an operational BW or frequency band, each positioned at a pre-defined time and a pre-defined frequency. For example, a BS 105 may transmit cell specific reference signals (CRSs) and / or channel state information -reference signals (CSI-RSs) to enable a UE 115 to estimate a DL channel. Similarly, a UE 115 may transmit sounding reference signals (SRSs) to enable a BS 105 to estimate a UL channel. Control information may include resource assignments and protocol controls. Data may include protocol data and / or operational data. In some instances, the BSs 105 and the UEs 115 may communicate using self-contained subframes. A self-contained subframe may include a portion for DL communication and a portion for UL communication. A self-contained subframe may be DL-centric or UL-centric. A DL-centric subframe may include a longer duration for DL communication than for UL communication. A UL-centric subframe may include a longer duration for UL communication than for UL communication.

[0041] In some instances, the network 100 may be an NR network deployed over a licensed spectrum. The B Ss 105 may transmit synchronization signals (e.g., including a primary synchronization signal (PSS) and a secondary synchronization signal (SSS) ) in the network 100 to facilitate synchronization. The BSs 105 may broadcast system  information associated with the network 100 (e.g., including a master information block (MIB) , remaining minimum system information (RMSI) , and other system information (OSI) ) to facilitate initial network access. In some instances, the BSs 105 may broadcast the PSS, the SSS, and / or the MIB in the form of synchronization signal blocks (SSBs) over a physical broadcast channel (PBCH) and may broadcast the RMSI and / or the OSI over a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) .

[0042] In some instances, a UE 115 attempting to access the network 100 may perform an initial cell search by detecting a PSS from a BS 105. The PSS may enable synchronization of period timing and may indicate a physical layer identity value. The UE 115 may then receive an SSS. The SSS may enable radio frame synchronization, and may provide a cell identity value, which may be combined with the physical layer identity value to identify the cell. The SSS may also enable detection ofa duplexing mode and a cyclic prefix length. The PSS and the SSS may be located in a central portion of a carrier or any suitable frequencies within the carrier.

[0043] After receiving the PSS and SSS, the UE 115 may receive a MIB. The MIB may include system information for initial network access and scheduling information for RMSI and / or OSI. After decoding the MIB, the UE 115 may receive RMSI and / or OSI. The RMSI and / or OSI may include radio resource control (RRC) information related to random access channel (RACH) procedures, paging, control resource set (CORESET) for physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) monitoring, physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) , physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) , power control, SRS, and cell barring.

[0044] After obtaining the MIB, the RMSI and / or the OSI, the UE 115 may perform a random access procedure to establish a connection with the BS 105. For the random access procedure, the UE 115 may transmit a random access preamble and the BS 105 may respond with a random access response. Upon receiving the random access response, the UE 115 may transmit a connection request to the BS 105 and the BS 105 may respond with a connection response (e.g., contention resolution message) .

[0045] After establishing a connection, the UE 115 and the BS 105 may enter a normal operation stage, where operational data may be exchanged. For example, the BS 105 may schedule the UE 115 for UL and / or DL communications. The BS 105 may transmit UL and / or DL scheduling grants to the UE 115 via a PDCCH. The BS 105 may transmit a DL communication signal to the UE 115 via a PDSCH according to a DL scheduling  grant. The UE 115 may transmit a UL communication signal to the BS 105 via a PUSCH and / or PUCCH according to a UL scheduling grant.

[0046] The network 100 may be designed to enable a wide range of use cases. While in some examples a network 100 may utilize monolithic base stations, there are a number of other architectures which may be used to perform aspects of the present disclosure. For example, a BS 105 may be separated into a remote radio head (RRH) and baseband unit (BBU) . BBUs may be centralized into a BBU pool and connected to RRHs through low-latency and high-bandwidth transport links, such as optical transport links. BBU pools may be cloud-based resources. In some aspects, baseband processing is performed on virtualized servers running in data centers rather than being co-located with a BS 105. In another example, based station functionality may be split between a remote unit (RU) , distributed unit (DU) , and a central unit (CU) . An RU generally performs low physical layer functions while a DU performs higher layer functions, which may include higher physical layer functions. A CU performs the higher RAN functions, such as radio resource control (RRC) .

[0047] For simplicity of discussion, the present disclosure refers to methods of the present disclosure being performed by base stations, or more generally network entities, while the functionality may be performed by a variety of architectures other than a monolithic base station. In addition to disaggregated base stations, aspects of the present disclosure may also be performed by a centralized unit (CU) , a distributed unit (DU) , a radio unit (RU) , a Near-Real Time (Near-RT) RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) , a Non-Real Time (Non-RT) RIC, IAB node, a relay node, a sidelink node, etc.

[0048] In some aspects, the IoT device 120 may receive, from the first BS 105, a first signal. The IoT device 120 may be powered by energy transmitted by the first BS 105. The IoT device 120 may select, based on at least one of an energy conversion efficiency associated with the first signal or a communication link quality associated with the first BS 105, the second BS 105 and / or the UE 115. The IoT device 120 may receive, from the second BS 105 or the UE 115, a second signal.

[0049] In some aspects, an ambient IoT device 120 may receive, from a first wireless communication device 105, a first signal. The ambient IoT device 120 may be powered by energy transmitted by the first wireless communication device 105. The ambient IoT device 120 may select, based on at least one of an energy conversion efficiency associated with the first signal or a communication link quality associated with the first wireless communication device 105, a second wireless communication device 105. The  ambient IoT device 120 may receive, from the second wireless communication device 105, a second signal.

[0050] In some aspects, the first BS 105 may establish, with the IoT device 120, a communication link. The first BS 105 may send, to the IoT device 120, a first signal. The first signal may be an energy signal to power the IoT device 120. For example, the first BS 105 may transmit, to the ambient IoT device 120, a continuous wave in one or more selected resources to power the ambient IoT device 120. The first BS 105 may send electromagnetic waves (e.g., radio waves or a single sinewave signal) to the ambient IoT device 120, and the ambient IoT device 120 may receive the electromagnetic waves from the first BS 105 at a frequency that matches a resonant frequency of an antenna of the ambient IoT device 120 to induce electric current, such that an integrated circuit of the ambient IoT device 120 may be powered to be engaged in the communication link. In some embodiments, the energy signal may include a high peak-to-average-power-ratio (PAPR) signal, multi-sine waves, an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) carrier signal, or a chaotic signal. In some embodiments, the communication link may be used to power the ambient IoT device 120 as an energy link. The first B S 105 may select, based on at least one of an energy conversion efficiency associated with the first signal or a communication link quality associated with the IoT device 120, a second BS 105 and / or a UE 115. The first BS 105 may receive, from the second BS 105 or the UE 115, a second signal.

[0051] In some aspects, a first wireless communication device 105 may establish, with an ambient IoT device 120, a communication link. The first wireless communication device 105 may send, to the ambient IoT device 120, a first signal. The first signal may be an energy signal to power the ambient IoT device 120. The first wireless communication device 105 may select, based on at least one of an energy conversion efficiency associated with the first signal or a communication link quality associated with the ambient IoT device 120, a second wireless communication device 105. The first wireless communication device 105 may receive, from the second wireless communication device 105, a second signal.

[0052] FIG. 2 shows a diagram illustrating an example disaggregated base station 200 architecture. The disaggregated base station 200 architecture may include one or more central units (CUs) 210 that may communicate directly with a core network 220 via a backhaul link, or indirectly with the core network 220 through one or more disaggregated base station units (such as a Near-Real Time (Near-RT) RAN Intelligent  Controller (RIC) 225 via an E2 link, or a Non-Real Time (Non-RT) RIC 215 associated with a Service Management and Orchestration (SMO) Framework 205, or both) . A CU 210 may communicate with one or more distributed units (DUs) 230 via respective midhaul links, such as an F1 interface. The DUs 230 may communicate with one or more radio units (RUs) 240 via respective fronthaul links. The RUs 240 may communicate with respective UEs 115 (e.g., the UEs 115a-115j) and / or the IoT devices 120 via one or more radio frequency (RF) access links. In some implementations, the UE 115 may be simultaneously served by multiple RUs 240.

[0053] Each of the units, i.e., the CUs 210, the DUs 230, the RUs 240, as well as the Near-RT RICs 225, the Non-RT RICs 215 and the SMO Framework 205, may include one or more interfaces or be coupled to one or more interfaces configured to receive or transmit signals, data, or information (collectively, signals) via a wired or wireless transmission medium. Each of the units, or an associated processor or controller providing instructions to the communication interfaces of the units, may be configured to communicate with one or more of the other units via the transmission medium. For example, the units may include a wired interface configured to receive or transmit signals over a wired transmission medium to one or more of the other units. Additionally, the units may include a wireless interface, which may include a receiver, a transmitter or transceiver (such as a radio frequency (RF) transceiver) , configured to receive or transmit signals, or both, over a wireless transmission medium to one or more of the other units.

[0054] In some aspects, the CU 210 may host one or more higher layer control functions. Such control functions may include radio resource control (RRC) , packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) , service data adaptation protocol (SDAP) , or the like. Each control function may be implemented with an interface configured to communicate signals with other control functions hosted by the CU 210. The CU 210 may be configured to handle user plane functionality (i.e., Central Unit -User Plane (CU-UP) ) , control plane functionality (i.e., Central Unit -Control Plane (CU-CP) ) , or a combination thereof. In some implementations, the CU 210 may be logically split into one or more CU-UP units and one or more CU-CP units. The CU-UP unit may communicate bidirectionally with the CU-CP unit via an interface, such as the El interface when implemented in an O-RAN configuration. The CU 210 may be implemented to communicate with the DU 230, as necessary, for network control and signaling.

[0055] The DU 230 may correspond to a logical unit that includes one or more base station functions to control the operation of one or more RUs 240. In some aspects, the DU 230 may host one or more of a radio link control (RLC) layer, a medium access control (MAC) layer, and one or more high physical (PHY) layers (such as modules for forward error correction (FEC) encoding and decoding, scrambling, modulation and demodulation, or the like) depending, at least in part, on a functional split, such as those defined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) . In some aspects, the DU 230 may further host one or more low PHY layers. Each layer (or module) may be implemented with an interface configured to communicate signals with other layers (and modules) hosted by the DU 230, or with the control functions hosted by the CU 210.

[0056] Lower-layer functionality may be implemented by one or more RUs 240. In some deployments, an RU 240, controlled by a DU 230, may correspond to a logical node that hosts RF processing functions, or low-PHY layer functions (such as performing fast Fourier transform (FFT) , inverse FFT (iFFT) , digital beamforming, physical random access channel (PRACH) extraction and filtering, or the like) , or both, based at least in part on the functional split, such as a lower layer functional split. In such an architecture, the RU (s) 240 may be implemented to handle over the air (OTA) communication with one or more UEs 115. In some implementations, real-time and non-real-time aspects of control and user plane communication with the RU (s) 240 may be controlled by the corresponding DU 230. In some scenarios, this configuration may enable the DU (s) 230 and the CU 210 to be implemented in a cloud-based RAN architecture, such as a vRAN architecture.

[0057] The SMO Framework 205 may be configured to support RAN deployment and provisioning of non-virtualized and virtualized network elements. For non-virtualized network elements, the SMO Framework 205 may be configured to support the deployment of dedicated physical resources for RAN coverage requirements which may be managed via an operations and maintenance interface (such as an O 1 interface) . For virtualized network elements, the SMO Framework 205 may be configured to interact with a cloud computing platform (such as an open cloud (O-Cloud) 290) to perform network element life cycle management (such as to instantiate virtualized network elements) via a cloud computing platform interface (such as an 02 interface) . Such virtualized network elements may include CUs 210, DUs 230, RUs 240 and Near-RT RICs 225. In some implementations, the SMO Framework 205 may communicate with a hardware aspect ofa 4G RAN, such as an open eNB (O-eNB) 211, via an O1  interface. Additionally, in some implementations, the SMO Framework 205 may communicate directly with one or more RUs 240 via an O1 interface. The SMO Framework 205 also may include a Non-RT RIC 215 configured to support functionality of the SMO Framework 205.

[0058] The Non-RT RIC 215 may be configured to include a logical function that enables non-real-time control and optimization of RAN elements and resources, Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning (AI / ML) workfiows including model training and updates, or policy-based guidance of applications / features in the Near-RT RIC 225. The Non-RT RIC 215 may be coupled to or communicate with (such as via an A1 interface) the Near-RT RIC 225. The Near-RT RIC 225 may be configured to include a logical function that enables near-real-time control and optimization of RAN elements and resources via data collection and actions over an interface (such as via an E2 interface) connecting one or more CUs 210, one or more DUs 230, or both, as well as an O-eNB, with the Near-RT RIC 225.

[0059] In some implementations, to generate AI / ML models to be deployed in the Near-RT RIC 225, the Non-RT RIC 215 may receive parameters or external enrichment information from external servers. Such information may be utilized by the Near-RT RIC 225 and may be received at the SMO Framework 205 or the Non-RT RIC 215 from non-network data sources or from network functions. In some examples, the Non-RT RIC 215 or the Near-RT RIC 225 may be configured to tune RAN behavior or performance. For example, the Non-RT RIC 215 may monitor long-term trends and patterns for performance and employ AI / ML models to perform corrective actions through the SMO Framework 205 (such as reconfiguration via O1) or via creation of RAN management policies (such as A1 policies) .

[0060] In some aspects, an ambient IoT device 120 may receive, from a first RU 240, a first signal. The ambient IoT device 120 may be powered by energy transmitted by the first RU 240. The ambient IoT device 120 may select, based on at least one of an energy conversion efficiency associated with the first signal or a communication link quality associated with the first RU 240, a second RU 240 and / or a UE 115. The ambient IoT device 120 may receive, from the second RU 240 or the UE 115, a second signal.

[0061] In some aspects, a first RU 240 may establish, with an ambient IoT device 120, a communication link. The first RU 240 may send, to the ambient IoT device 120, a first signal. The first signal may be an energy signal to power the ambient IoT device 120.  The first RU 240 may select, based on at least one of an energy conversion efficiency associated with the first signal or a communication link quality associated with the ambient IoT device 120, a second RU 240 and / or a UE 115. The first RU 240 may receive, from the second RU 240 or the UE 115, a second signal.

[0062] FIG. 3 illustrates an example of wireless communication between a network unit 310 and an ambient IoT device 120, according to some aspects of the present disclosure. A wireless communication network 300 includes a network unit 310, the ambient IoT device 120, and the UE 115. In some aspects, the network unit 310 may be a BS, a CU, a DU, and / or a RU that communicates with the UE 115. In some aspects, the network unit 310 may be the BS 105, the CU 210, the DU 230, the RU 240 and / or a network unit 900 described in FIGS. 1-2, or 9. In some aspects, the network unit 310 may be an integrated access and backhaul (IAB) node, a repeater node, or a gNB. In some aspects, the UE 115 may be the UE 115 described in FIGS. 1 and 2. In some aspects, the ambient IoT device 120 may be the ambient IoT device 120 or an ambient IoT device 800 described in FIGS. 1, 2, or 8. The network unit 310 may provide communication coverage for a cell 312. The cell 312 may allow the UE 115 access to its network provider and support the UE 115 and the ambient IoT device 120 to initiate an association procedure. In some aspects, the cell 312 may be cells described in FIG. 1.

[0063] In some aspects, an ambient IoT device 120 may receive, from a network unit 310, a first signal. The ambient IoT device 120 may be powered by energy transmitted by the network unit 310. The ambient IoT device 120 may select, based on at least one of an energy conversion efficiency associated with the first signal or a communication link quality associated with the network unit 310, a second network unit 310 and / or a UE 115. The ambient IoT device 120 may receive, from the second network unit 310 or the UE 115, a second signal. The detailed steps of examples of the ambient IoT device 120 selecting a relay (e.g., an assistance node) in a wireless communication device between the network unit 310 (e.g., the BS 105, the CU 210, the DU 230, and / or the RU 240) and the ambient IoT device 120 will be further described in FIGS. 4-7.

[0064] In some aspects, a network unit 310 may establish, with an ambient IoT device 120, a communication link. The network unit 310 may send, to the ambient IoT device 120, a first signal. The first signal may be an energy signal to power the ambient IoT device 120. The network unit 310 may select, based on at least one of an energy conversion efficiency associated with the first signal or a communication link quality associated with the ambient IoT device 120, a second network unit 310 and / or a UE  115. The network unit 310 may receive, from the second network unit 310 or the UE 115, a second signal. The detailed steps of examples of the network unit 310 selecting a relay (e.g., an assistance node) in a wireless communication device between the network unit 310 (e.g., the BS 105, the CU 210, the DU 230, and / or the RU 240) and the ambient IoT device 120 will be further described in FIGS. 4-7.

[0065] FIG. 4 is a flow diagram of a communication method 400 according to some aspects of the present disclosure. Aspects of the method 400 may be executed by a computing device (e.g., a processor, processing circuit, and / or other suitable component) of a communication device or other suitable means for performing the actions. For example, a communication device, such as the ambient IoT device 120 or the ambient IoT device 800 may utilize one or more components, such as the processor 802, the memory 804, the assistance node selection module 808, the transceiver 810, the modem 812, and the one or more antennas 816, to execute aspects of method 400. The method 400 may employ similar mechanisms as in the networks 100 and 200 and the aspects and actions described with respect to FIG. 3. For example, a communication device, such as a network unit 105 may utilize one or more components, such as the processor 902, the memory 904, the assistance node selection module 908, the transceiver 910, the modem 912, and the one or more antennas 916, to execute aspects of method 400. As illustrated, the method 400 includes a number of enumerated actions, but the method 400 may include additional actions before, after, and in between the enumerated actions. In some aspects, one or more of the enumerated actions may be omitted or performed in a different order.

[0066] At action 402, the ambient IoT device 120 may receive, from a first communication device (e.g., a network unit 105 shown as an example in FIG. 4, a UE 115, an internet access backhaul (IAB) node, a repeater node, etc. ) , a first signal. In one embodiment, the ambient IoT device 120 may be powered by energy transmitted by the first communication device. For example, the first signal may be an energy signal which provides an energy link between the ambient IoT device 120 and the first communication device. In some embodiments, the first signal may be a communication signal which provides a communication link between the ambient IoT device 120 and the first communication device. In some embodiments, the first signal may include an energy signal and a communication signal, which power the ambient IoT device 120 and provide a communication link between the ambient IoT device 120 and the first communication device.

[0067] At action 404, the ambient IoT device 120 may select a second communication device (e.g., a network unit 105, a UE 115, an IAB node, a repeater node, etc. ) as a relay (e.g., an assistance node) in response to a certain incident / scenario, e.g., a number of an acknowledgement or a negative acknowledgement (ACK / NACK) that the ambient IoT device 120 sends exceeding a threshold, shown as an example in FIG. 4.

[0068] In some embodiments, when the first signal is a communication signal which provides a communication link between the ambient IoT device 120 and the first communication device, the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) may be triggered to select the second communication device as an assistance node to assist the communication, if a quality of the communication link between the first communication device and the ambient IoT device 120 is worse than a predefined / configured quality (e.g., receiving a NACK message) . For example, the quality of the communication link may be determined based on the number of NACKs received from the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) . When the number of NACK is greater than a threshold, the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) may select an assistance node (e.g., the second communication device) to assist the communication transmission. In some embodiments, the number of NACKs may be a total number of NACKs received during a monitoring window. For example, the threshold may be set as a maximum number of NACKs (e.g., three NACK messages) that can be received during a monitoring window of 15 minutes, once the first communication device (or the ambient IoT device 120) receives more than three NACKs within the monitoring window of 15 minutes, the first communication device (or the ambient IoT device 120) may be triggered to select the second communication device as a relay in the communication transmission. In some embodiments, the number of NACKs may be a number of NACKs that are consecutively received. For example, the threshold may be set as a maximum number of NACKs (e.g., three NACK messages) that can be consecutively received, when the first communication device (or the ambient IoT device 120) receives three NACKs in a row, the first communication device (or the ambient IoT device 120) may be triggered to select the second communication device as a relay in the communication transmission. That means if an ACK message is received before the number of NACKs reaches the threshold (e.g., the maximum number of NACKs that can be consecutively received) , the counter for counting the number of NACKs will reset to 0. The detailed  steps of examples of the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) selecting an assistance node based on ACK / NACK will be further described in FIG. 5.

[0069] In some embodiments, when the first signal is a communication signal which provides a communication link between the ambient IoT device 120 and the first communication device, the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) may be triggered to select the second communication device as an assistance node to assist the communication, if a performance of the communication link between the first communication device and the ambient IoT device 120 is worse than a threshold. The performance of the communication link may be indicated by block error rate / bit error rate (BLER / BER) of control information and / or BLER / BER of data information, and the threshold may be a value of the BLER / BER of control information and / or a value of the BLER / BER of data information. For example, when the value of the BLER / BER of control information and / or the BLER / BER of data information is greater than a predefined threshold, the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) may be triggered to select the second communication device. In another embodiment, ifa number of the value of the BLER / BER of control information and / or the value of the BLER / BER of data information being greater than a first threshold is greater than a second threshold during a monitoring window, the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) may be triggered to select the second communication device. For example, the first threshold for the value of the BLER / BER of data information is set as 10%, and the second threshold for a number of the value of the BLER / BER of data information being less than 10%is three times. Therefore, during the monitoring window, the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) may select an assistance node, when it observes more than three times of the value of the BLER / BER of data information being less than 10%.

[0070] In some embodiments, when the first signal is a communication signal which provides a communication link between the ambient IoT device 120 and the first communication device, the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) may be triggered to select the second communication device as an assistance node to assist the communication based on at least one of reference signal received power (RSRP) , signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) , or received signal strength indicator (RSSI) . For example, the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) may select the second communication device based on measured  RSRP / SINR / RSSI values, e.g., the measured RSRP / SINR / RSSI values greater or less than a preset threshold.

[0071] In some embodiments, when the first signal is a communication signal which provides a communication link between the ambient IoT device 120 and the first communication device, the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) may be triggered to select the second communication device as an assistance node to assist the communication, if the quality of the current communication link (e.g., the communication link between the ambient IoT device 120 and the first communication device) is worse than the quality of a new communication link (e.g., the communication link between the ambient IoT device 120 and the second communication device) . In this embodiment, the first communication device (e.g., a BS 105) may configure a periodic resource for the ambient IoT device 120, the first communication device, and the second communication device to transmit the signal for measurements of the communication links (e.g., the current communication link and the new communication link) . In this embodiment, the ambient IoT device 120, the first communication device, and / or the second communication device may preform measurements for the communication link periodically, so that a selection of an assistance node can be triggered when either one of the ambient IoT device 120, the first communication device, and the second communication device observes the quality of the current communication link being worse than the quality of the new communication link.

[0072] In some embodiments, each of the criteria for triggering a selection of an assistance node mentioned in the embodiments that the first signal is a communication signal may be collectively utilized. For example, the first criterion for triggering the selection of the assistance node may be the number of NACKs received from ambient IoT device 120 being greater than a threshold, and the second criterion for triggering the selection of the assistance node may be the quality of the current communication link being worse than the quality of the new communication link, the first communication device may select the assistance node when both of the first criterion and the second criterion are fulfilled. In this case, when applying multiple criteria for triggering the selection of the assistance node, the ambient IoT device 120, the first communication device, and / or the second communication device may preform measurements for the communication link less frequently (e.g., a longer interval or a longer turnaround time) , comparing with the scenario of applying one criterion for triggering the selection of the assistance node. The detailed steps of examples of the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first  communication device) selecting an assistance node based on multiple criteria will be further described in FIG. 6.

[0073] In some embodiments, the monitoring window mentioned above (e.g., the embodiments that the first signal is a communication signal) , may be a radio resource control (RRC) configured, periodic monitoring window. In some embodiments, the monitoring window may be triggered (e.g., be initiated) when receiving a NACK message. In some embodiments, the monitoring window may be triggered when the value of the BLER / BER of control information and / or the BLER / BER of data information is less than the predefined threshold, the monitoring window may be initiated (e.g., at time T1) .

[0074] In some embodiments, when the first signal may be an energy signal which provides an energy link between the ambient IoT device 120 and the first communication device, the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) may be triggered to select the second communication device as the relay if an energy conversion efficiency is less than a threshold (e.g., a preset percentage of the energy conversion efficiency) . For example, a threshold of the energy conversion efficiency for triggering a selection of a second communication device (e.g., an assistance node to assist the energy transmission between the first communication device and the ambient IoT device 120) may be set in a policy or an agreement in RAN plenary, such as a threshold of 60%of the energy conversion efficiency. When the energy conversion efficiency is less than 60%, the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) may select an assistance node (e.g., the second communication device) to assist the energy transmission.

[0075] In some embodiments, when the first signal may be an energy signal which provides an energy link between the ambient IoT device 120 and the first communication device, the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) may be triggered to select the second communication device as the relay if the energy conversion efficiency during a configured monitoring window is less than a threshold. The energy conversion efficiency in this embodiment may be at least one of an average energy conversion efficiency, a maximum energy conversion efficiency, or a minimum energy conversion efficiency. For example, when the energy conversion efficiency is less than a preset threshold (e.g., 60%of the energy conversion efficiency) within a default monitoring window (e.g., three hours from 12AM to 3AM) , the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) may select a second communication  device to assist the energy transmission. In some embodiments, the monitoring window may be predefined or RRC configured. In some embodiments, the monitoring window may be dynamic indicated. In some embodiments, the monitoring window may be initiated by an event (e.g., receiving a NACK message or the energy conversion efficiency being less than a threshold) .

[0076] In some embodiments, when the first signal may be an energy signal which provides an energy link between the ambient IoT device 120 and the first communication device, the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) may be triggered to select the second communication device as the relay, if a number of the energy conversion efficiency being less than a first threshold (e.g., a failure of energy link) is greater than a second threshold during a monitoring window. For example, the first threshold for the energy conversion efficiency is set as 60%, and the second threshold for a number of the energy conversion efficiency being less than 60%is five times. Therefore, during the monitoring window, the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) may select an assistance node, when it observes more than five times of failures of the energy link (e.g., five times of the energy conversion efficiency being less than 60%in the energy link throughout the monitoring window) . In some embodiments, the energy conversion efficiency may be and an instantaneous energy conversion efficiency, e.g., an energy conversion efficiency at a present time when calculating the energy conversion efficiency. In some embodiments, the energy conversion efficiency may be at least one of an average energy conversion efficiency, a maximum energy conversion efficiency, or a minimum energy conversion efficiency during a configured monitoring window. The detailed steps of examples of the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) selecting an assistance node based on the energy conversion efficiency will be further described in FIG. 7.

[0077] In some embodiments, when the first signal may be an energy signal which provides an energy link between the ambient IoT device 120 and the first communication device, the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) may be triggered to select the second communication device as the relay, if a total energy harvested during a monitoring window is less than a threshold.

[0078] In some embodiments, when the first signal may be an energy signal which provides an energy link between the ambient IoT device 120 and the first communication device, the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) may be triggered to select the second communication device as the relay, if the energy conversion efficiency of a new energy link (e.g., the energy link between the ambient IoT device 120 and the second communication device) is better than an energy conversion efficiency of the current energy link (e.g., the energy link between the ambient IoT device 120 and the first communication device) .

[0079] In some embodiments, when the first signal may be an energy signal which provides an energy link between the ambient IoT device 120 and the first communication device, the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) may be triggered to select the second communication device as the relay, if a gap between two energy transmissions (e.g., a break time between the two energy transmissions) is greater than a predefined duration. For example, the predefined duration between two energy transmissions may be set as three seconds, therefore, the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) may select the second communication device to assist the energy link when a gap / interval between two energy transmissions (e.g., 30 seconds) is longer than the predefined duration (e.g., 3 seconds) .

[0080] In some embodiments, when the second communication device may only be utilized to assist the communication link, the trigger condition (s) for selecting the second communication device may follow the criteria discussed in the embodiments that the first signal is a communication signal. For example, the second communication device may only be used for either downlink transmission or uplink transmission, the trigger conditions for selecting the second communication device may include: (1) a quality of the communication link between the first communication device and the ambient IoT device 120 being worse than a predefined / configured quality, (2) a performance of the communication link between the first communication device and the ambient IoT device 120 being worse than a threshold, (3) measured RSRP / SINR / RSSI values being greater or less than a preset threshold, (4) the quality of the current communication link being worse than the quality of a new communication link, and (5) a combination of at least two of aforementioned (1) to (4) in this embodiment.

[0081] As discussed above, when the second communication device may only be utilized to assist the communication link, the second communication device may be used for both downlink transmission and uplink transmission. Therefore, the trigger conditions for  selecting a third communication device as a new relay may include: (1) either the downlink transmission or the uplink transmission provided by the second communication meeting the criteria discussed in the embodiments that the first signal is a communication signal, and (2) both of the downlink transmission and the uplink transmission provided by the second communication meeting the criteria discussed in the embodiments that the first signal is a communication signal. For example, when a quality of the downlink transmission between the second communication device and the ambient IoT device 120 is worse than a predefined quality, the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) may select a third communication device (e.g., a network unit 105, a UE 115, an IAB node, or a repeater node as a new relay) to assist the wireless communication between the ambient IoT device 120 and the first communication device. In some embodiment, the thresholds discussed in determining the second communication device may be different than the thresholds discussed in determining the third communication device. For example, the threshold of the number of NACKs received in triggering the selection of the third communication device may be lower / stricter than the threshold of the number of NACKs received in triggering the selection of the second communication device. Likewise, the value of BLER / BER to trigger the selection of the third communication device may be lower / stricter than the value of BLER / BER to trigger the selection of the second communication device.

[0082] In some embodiments, when the second communication device may only be utilized to assist the energy link, the trigger condition (s) for selecting the second communication device may follow the criteria discussed in the embodiments that the first signal is an energy signal. For example, the trigger conditions for selecting the second communication device when the second communication device only supports the energy link may include: (1) an energy conversion efficiency is less than a threshold, (2) an energy conversion efficiency during a configured monitoring window being less than a threshold, (3) a number of the energy conversion efficiency being less than a first threshold being greater than a second threshold during a monitoring window, (4) a total energy harvested during a monitoring window being less than a threshold, (5) an energy conversion efficiency of a new energy link being better than an energy conversion efficiency of a current energy link, and (6) a gap between two energy transmissions being greater than a predefined duration.

[0083] In some embodiments, when the second communication device may be utilized to assist both of the communication link and the energy link, the trigger conditions for  selecting the second communication device may include: (1) either the communication link or the energy link satisfying any one of the trigger conditions discussed in the embodiments where the second communication device may only be utilized to assist the communication link and the trigger conditions discussed in the embodiments where the second communication device may only be utilized to assist the energy link.

[0084] In some embodiments, when the second communication device may be utilized to assist both of the communication link and the energy link, the trigger conditions for selecting the second communication device may include considering both of the communication link and the energy links jointly. For example, the thresholds for the communication link for triggering the selection of the second communication device may be determined by an energy status (e.g., an energy that is currently available) . The energy status may represent an energy level of the available energy, such that the thresholds (e.g., the number of NACK, the value of BLER / BER, etc. ) may be different corresponding to different energy levels. In another embodiment, the thresholds for the energy link for triggering the selection of the second communication device may be determined by a performance of the communication link. For example, a performance of the communication link may be indicated by a corresponding level (e.g., great, good, poor, etc. ) , such that the thresholds may be different corresponding to different levels of the performance of the communication link.

[0085] In some embodiments, when the second communication device may be utilized to assist both of the communication link and the energy link, trigger conditions for selecting the third communication device may include: (1) an energy conversion efficiency of a new energy link (e.g., the energy link associated with the third communication device) being better than the current energy link (e.g., the energy link associated with the second communication device) , and (2) a quality of the communication link (e.g., the communication link associated with the third communication device) being greater than a predefined / configured threshold.

[0086] In some embodiments, when the second communication device may be utilized to assist both of the communication link and the energy link, trigger conditions for selecting the third communication device may include: (1) a quality of a new communication link (e.g., the communication link associated with the third communication device) being better than the quality of the current communication link (e.g., the communication link associated with the second communication device) , and (2) an energy conversion  efficiency (e.g., the energy conversion efficiency associated with the third communication device) being greater than a predefined / configured threshold.

[0087] In some embodiments, when the second communication device may be utilized to assist both of the communication link and the energy link, trigger conditions for selecting the third communication device may include: both of an energy conversion efficiency and a quality of a new communication link (e.g., the energy conversion efficiency and the quality of the communication link associated with the third communication device) being better than the current energy link and the current communication link (e.g., the energy conversion efficiency and the quality of the communication link associated with the second communication device) . In some embodiments, the thresholds may be different for a second communication device assisting both of the communication link (including downlink transmission and uplink transmission) and the energy link and a second communication device only assisting the energy link and the downlink transmission.

[0088] At action 406, the first communication device may send a second signal to the selected second communication device.

[0089] Furthermore, at action 408, the selected second communication device may send the second signal to the ambient IoT device 120, as a relay in the wireless communication between the first communication device and the ambient IoT device 120. In some embodiments, the second signal may be an energy signal (e.g., a continuous wave, multi-sine waves, an OFDM carrier signal, or a chaotic signal) . For example, the second signal may be an energy signal received by the ambient IoT device 120. In some aspects, the ambient IoT device 120 may receive the energy signal from a UE serving as the second wireless communication device.

[0090] FIG. 5 illustrates an exemplary wireless communication 500 between an ambient device and a network unit, according to some aspects of the present disclosure. Aspects of the wireless communication 500 may be executed by a computing device (e.g., a processor, processing circuit, and / or other suitable component) of a communication device or other suitable means for performing the actions. For example, a communication device, such as the ambient IoT device 120 may utilize one or more components, such as the processor 802, the memory 804, the assistance node selection module 808, the transceiver 810, the modem 812, and the one or more antennas 816, to execute aspects in the wireless communication 500. For example, a communication device, such as the network unit 105 may utilize one or more components, such as the  processor 902, the memory 904, the assistance node selection module 908, the transceiver 910, the modem 912, and the one or more antennas 916, to execute aspects in the wireless communication 500.

[0091] As discussed in FIG. 4, the wireless communication 500 may indicate a method for selecting an assistance node for a communication between the ambient IoT device 120 and the first communication device (e.g., a network unit 105, a UE 115, an IAB node, a repeater node, etc. ) , and the wireless communication 500 may be performed by the ambient IoT device 120 and the first communication device. The wireless communication 500 illustrates an embodiment that the first signal received at the ambient IoT device 120 from the first communication device is a communication signal which provides a communication link between the ambient IoT device 120 and the first communication device. A trigger condition (e.g., a number of NACKs) applied in the wireless communication 500 for selecting the assistance node in the communication link may be the number of ACK / NACK received at the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) . For example, a threshold of a number of NACKs that is allowed to be received at the first communication device (e.g., a maximum number of NACKs) may be predetermined as 3. The ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) may proceed with selecting the assistance node (e.g., the second communication device) when the number of NACKs received at the ambient IoT device 120 reaches the threshold (e.g., three NACKs) .

[0092] As shown in FIG. 5, the threshold of the number of NACKs may be a total number of NACKs received during a monitoring window 502 started at Time 504. For example, the threshold may be set as a maximum number of NACKs (e.g., three NACK messages) that is allowed to be received during a monitoring window of 15 minutes (or any time period that is predefined by a user or a system) . The first communication device (or the ambient IoT device 120) may observe: (1) the number of NACKs received at the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) during the monitoring window 502, and (2) whether the number of NACKs are consecutively received. For example, in a first scenario 506, the first communication device (or the ambient IoT device 120) may observe that there are three consecutive NACKs received at the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) , such that the first communication device may select the assistance node as a relay to assist the communication between the ambient IoT device 120 and the first communication device. In a second scenario 508, the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first  communication device) may observe a receipt of a NACK message received at the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) which is followed by an ACK message. The receipt of the ACK message may reset the count of the number of NACKs to zero, so that when the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) receives another NACK after the receipt of the ACK message, the count of the number of NACKs received for this NACK is one. The ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) may continuously count the number of NACKs unless receiving another ACK before the number of NACKs reaches the threshold (e.g., the maximum number of NACKs that is allowed to be consecutively received) .

[0093] FIG. 6 illustrates an exemplary wireless communication 600 between an ambient device and a network unit, according to some aspects of the present disclosure. Aspects of the wireless communication 600 may be executed by a computing device (e.g., a processor, processing circuit, and / or other suitable component) of a communication device or other suitable means for performing the actions. For example, a communication device, such as the ambient IoT device 120 may utilize one or more components, such as the processor 802, the memory 804, the assistance node selection module 808, the transceiver 810, the modem 812, and the one or more antennas 816, to execute aspects in the wireless communication 600. For example, a communication device, such as the network unit 105 may utilize one or more components, such as the processor 902, the memory 904, the assistance node selection module 908, the transceiver 910, the modem 912, and the one or more antennas 916, to execute aspects in the wireless communication 600.

[0094] As discussed in FIG. 4, the wireless communication 600 may indicate a method for selecting an assistance node for a communication between the ambient IoT device 120 and the first communication device (e.g., a network unit 105, a UE 115, an IAB node, a repeater node, etc. ) , and the wireless communication 600 may be performed by the ambient IoT device 120 and the first communication device. The wireless communication 600 illustrates an embodiment that the first signal received at the ambient IoT device 120 from the first communication device is a communication signal which provides a communication link between the ambient IoT device 120 and the first communication device. Trigger condition (s) applied in the wireless communication 600 for selecting the assistance node in the communication link may be at least two criteria, such as the number of NACKs and the quality of the current communication link.

[0095] As shown in FIG. 6, a first trigger condition 602 and a second trigger condition 604 applied in the wireless communication 600 may include a quality of the communication link being worse than a predefined / configured threshold, and a quality of a new communication link being better than a quality of the current communication link. For example, during the data transmission, the first trigger condition 602 may be fulfilled, e.g., the quality of that communication link is worse than a predefined threshold, such that the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) may select the assistance node (e.g., the second communication device) in response to that. For example, the first trigger condition 602 may include a scenario when the measured RSRP / SINR / RSSI values greater or less than a preset threshold (as discussed in FIG. 4) , a scenario when the value of the BLER / BER of control information and / or the BLER / BER of data information is greater than a predefined threshold (as discussed in FIG. 4) , or a scenario when there is a new communication link has a better quality than the current communication link, or a scenario when either party receives a number of NACKs greater than a predefined number (as discussed in FIGS. 4 and 6) . Furthermore, in some embodiments, when both of the first trigger condition 602 and the second trigger condition 604 have been fulfilled, either the ambient device or the network unit may select a new assistance node in the wireless communication 600. For example, multiple measurements on the signal in the communication link may be performed during the data transmission. The measurements on the signal may indicate whether the second trigger condition 604 is fulfilled, e.g., the quality of the new communication link (e.g., the communication link associated with the third communication device) is better than the quality of the current communication link (e.g., the communication link associated with the second communication device) , such that the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) may select a new assistance node (e.g., the third communication device) in response to that. In some embodiments, the second trigger condition 604 may be utilized to trigger a selection of the second communication device. In some embodiments, the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) may select an assistance node as the relay when both of the first trigger condition 602 and the second trigger condition 604 are fulfilled. In some embodiments, the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) may select an assistance node as the relay when either the first trigger condition 602 and / or the second trigger condition 604 is fulfilled, as discussed in FIG. 4.

[0096] FIG. 7 illustrates an exemplary wireless communication 700 between an ambient device and a network unit, according to some aspects of the present disclosure. Aspects of the wireless communication 700 may be executed by a computing device (e.g., a processor, processing circuit, and / or other suitable component) of a communication device or other suitable means for performing the actions. For example, a communication device, such as the ambient IoT device 120 may utilize one or more components, such as the processor 802, the memory 804, the assistance node selection module 808, the transceiver 810, the modem 812, and the one or more antennas 816, to execute aspects in the wireless communication 700. For example, a communication device, such as the network unit 105 may utilize one or more components, such as the processor 902, the memory 904, the assistance node selection module 908, the transceiver 910, the modem 912, and the one or more antennas 916, to execute aspects in the wireless communication 700.

[0097] As discussed in FIG. 4, the wireless communication 700 may indicate a method for selecting an assistance node for a communication between the ambient IoT device 120 and the first communication device (e.g., a network unit 105, a UE 115, an IAB node, a repeater node, etc. ) , and the wireless communication 700 may be performed by the ambient IoT device 120 and the first communication device. The wireless communication 700 illustrates an embodiment that the first signal received at the ambient IoT device 120 from the first communication device is an energy signal which provides an energy link between the ambient IoT device 120 and the first communication device. Trigger condition (s) applied in the wireless communication 700 for selecting the assistance node in the communication link may be a number of the energy conversion efficiency being less than a first threshold 702 (e.g., a failure of energy link) being greater than a second threshold 704 during a monitoring window.

[0098] As shown in FIG. 7, the first threshold 702 for the energy conversion efficiency is a predefined threshold that may trigger a selection of an assistance node if the energy conversion efficiency is lower than the predefined threshold. For example, the first threshold 702 may be set as 60%, therefore, an energy conversion efficiency below the first threshold 702 may be considered as a failure (e.g., an energy conversion efficiency 706 which is lower than the first threshold shown in FIG. 7) of the energy link, and the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) may count the number of failures to determine whether there is a need to select the assistance node. Furthermore, the second threshold 704 for a number of the energy conversion efficiency being less  than the first threshold 702 may be a predefined number (e.g., five times) . Therefore, during a monitoring window (e.g., a first monitoring window from Time T1 at 708 to Time T2 at 710) , there may be multiple signal transmission failures between the ambient IoT device 120 and the first communication device, including a first signal transmission failure 714, a second signal transmission failure 716, a third signal transmission failure 718, and a fourth signal transmission failure 720. The ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) may monitor the number of failures observed within the monitoring window to determine whether there is a need to select the assistance node. For example, during the first monitoring window from Time T1 to Time T2, the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) observes four failures (e.g., the first signal transmission failure 714, the second signal transmission failure 716, the third signal transmission failure 718, and the fourth signal transmission failure 720) in the energy link which do not exceed the second threshold 704 (e.g., the number of five) , such that an assistance node for the energy link is not needed. Likewise, during a second monitoring window from Time T2 at 710 to Time T3 at 712, the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) observes five failures (e.g., a first signal transmission failure 722, a second signal transmission failure 724, a third signal transmission failure 726, a fourth signal transmission failure 728, and a fifth signal transmission failure 730) in the energy link which exceed or reach the second threshold 704 (e.g., the number of five) , in response to that, the ambient IoT device 120 (or the first communication device) may select an assistance node for the energy link.

[0099] FIG. 8 is a block diagram of an exemplary ambient IoT device 800 according to some aspects of the present disclosure. The ambient IoT device 800 may be the ambient IoT device 120 in the network 100, or 200 as discussed above. As shown, the ambient IoT device 800 may include a processor 802, a memory 804, an assistance node selection module 808, a transceiver 810 including a modem subsystem 812 and a radio frequency (RF) unit 814, and one or more antennas 816. These elements may be coupled with each other and in direct or indirect communication with each other, for example via one or more buses.

[0102] The assistance node selection module 808 may be implemented via hardware, software, or combinations thereof. For example, the assistance node selection module 808 may be implemented as a processor, circuit, and / or instructions 806 stored in the memory 804 and executed by the processor 802. In some aspects, the assistance node selection module 808 may implement the aspects of FIGS. 3-7. For example, the assistance node selection module 808 may receive, from a first wireless communication device, a first signal, and the ambient IoT device is powered by energy transmitted by the first wireless communication device. The assistance node selection module 808 may select, based on at least one of an energy conversion efficiency associated with the first signal or a communication link quality associated with the first wireless communication device, a second wireless communication device. The assistance node selection module 808 may receive, from the second wireless communication device, a second signal.

[0103] As shown, the transceiver 810 may include the modem subsystem 812 and the RF unit 814. The transceiver 810 may be configured to communicate bi-directionally with other devices, such as the BSs 105 and / or the UEs 115. The modem subsystem 812  may be configured to modulate and / or encode the data from the memory 804 and the according to a modulation and coding scheme (MCS) , e.g., a low-density parity check (LDPC) coding scheme, a turbo coding scheme, a convolutional coding scheme, a digital beamforming scheme, etc. The RF unit 814 may be configured to process (e.g., perform analog to digital conversion or digital to analog conversion, etc. ) modulated / encoded data from the modem subsystem 812 (on outbound transmissions) or of transmissions originating from another source such as a UE 115 or a BS 105. The RF unit 814 may be further configured to perform analog beamforming in conjunction with the digital beamforming. Although shown as integrated together in transceiver 810, the modem subsystem 812 and the RF unit 814 may be separate devices that are coupled together to enable the ambient IoT device 800 to communicate with other devices.

[0104] The RF unit 814 may provide the modulated and / or processed data, e.g., data packets (or, more generally, data messages that may contain one or more data packets and other information) , to the antennas 816 for transmission to one or more other devices. The antennas 816 may further receive data messages transmitted from other devices. The antennas 816 may provide the received data messages for processing and / or demodulation at the transceiver 810. The antennas 816 may include multiple antennas of similar or different designs in order to sustain multiple transmission links. The RF unit 814 may configure the antennas 816.

[0105] In some instances, the ambient IoT device 800 may include multiple transceivers 810 implementing different RATs (e.g., NR and LTE) . In some instances, the ambient IoT device 800 may include a single transceiver 810 implementing multiple RATs (e.g., NR and LTE) . In some instances, the transceiver 810 may include various components, where different combinations of components may implement RATs.
