AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing intraluminal medical devices often lack integrated sensors for tracking location, tissue engagement, and physiological variables, leading to poor information about these parameters during medical procedures, and require multiple proprietary systems, increasing cost and complexity.

Method used

A reusable catheter accessory sheath made of shape-memory material that can be reversibly attached to intraluminal instruments, featuring an intraluminal sensor that transforms in size and shape to create a friction fit around the instrument, allowing for easy attachment and detachment without modifying the instrument or sensor.

Benefits of technology

Enables the inexpensive, repeatable, reversible, and reusable attachment of sensors to any intraluminal device, improving sensing capabilities during medical procedures without damaging the device or requiring complex integration, thus enhancing procedural efficiency and reducing costs.

Abstract

An apparatus (100) includes an accessory sheath (155) including a shape memory material and an intraluminal sensor (150) coupled to the shape memory material. The shape memory material is configured to reversibly transform to a first configuration or a second configuration based on stimulus. In the first configuration of the shape memory material, the accessory sheath (155) is configured to receive and loosely couple to an intraluminal instrument (140). In the second configuration of the shape memory material, the accessory sheath (155), fit over the intraluminal instrument (140), is configured to tightly couple to the intraluminal instrument (140), such that handling of the intraluminal instrument (140) and navigation of the intraluminal instrument (140) inside a body of a patient does not change the position or the orientation of the intraluminal sensor (150) on the intraluminal instrument (140).
