AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Current systems for identifying tissues in the surgical field during minimally invasive surgeries face challenges due to the loss of direct visualization and tactile sensation, leading to potential inadvertent tissue damage and increased surgical complexity.

Method used

A medical system comprising a medical tool with a working end equipped with a light emitter and a light sensor, configured to emit and detect light at specific wavelengths to excite and detect fluorescent indicators, thereby determining the presence and characteristics of tissues without additional equipment.

Benefits of technology

This solution enables accurate identification and targeting of tissues, reducing the risk of inadvertent damage and improving surgical precision, while avoiding the need for additional equipment and minimizing surgical complexity.

Abstract

A medical system includes a medical tool having a working end, at least one light emitter, and at least one light sensor. The at least one light emitter is disposed at the working end of the medical tool, and configured to emit light at at least one wavelength selected to excite a fluorescent indicator in a region proximate to the working end of the medical tool. The at least one light sensor is disposed at the working end of the medical tool, and configured to detect light at at least one wavelength from the fluorescent indicator. The system also includes a controller coupled to the at least one light sensor to determine if the fluorescent indicator is in the region proximate to the working end of the medical tool. A method of operating the medical system is also included.
