Abstract

Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to communication link control. In an aspect, a terminal device establishes one or more communication links with one or more network nodes for delivery of one or more data units. The terminal device determines whether to duplicate at least one of the one or more data units. If it is determined that the at least one of the one or more data units is not to be duplicated, the terminal device determines that at least one of the one or more communication links is to be temporally suspended. Moreover, the terminal device indicates the temporal suspension to a network node of the one or more network nodes providing the at least one of the one or more communication links. Then, the terminal device transmits the one or more data units to the one or more network nodes via the communication links that are not suspended. In this way, it is allowed to save radio resources and reduce power consumption at the terminal device.

[0034] The term “terminal device” refers to any end device that may be capable of wireless communication. By way of example rather than limitation, a terminal device may also be referred to as a communication device, user equipment (UE) , a subscriber station (SS) , a portable subscriber station, a mobile station (MS) , or an access terminal (AT) . The terminal device may include, but not limited to, a mobile phone, a cellular phone, a smart phone, voice over IP (VoIP) phones, wireless local loop phones, a tablet, a wearable terminal device, a personal digital assistant (PDA) , portable computers, desktop computer, image capture terminal devices such as digital cameras, gaming terminal devices, music storage and playback appliances, vehicle-mounted wireless terminal devices, wireless endpoints, mobile stations, laptop-embedded equipment (LEE) , laptop-mounted equipment (LME) , USB dongles, smart devices, wireless customer-premises equipment (CPE) , an internet of things (IoT) device, a tag, a watch or other wearable, a head-mounted display (HMD) , a vehicle, a drone, a medical device and applications (e.g., remote surgery) , an industrial device and applications (e.g., a robot and / or other wireless devices operating in an industrial and / or an automated processing chain contexts) , a consumer electronics device, a device operating on commercial and / or industrial wireless networks, and the like. In the following description, the terms “terminal device” , “communication device” , “terminal” , “user equipment” and “UE” may be used interchangeably.

[0035] Based on the eXtended Reality (XR) application, use cases, and deployment scenarios discussed in, for example, the third generation partnership project (3GPP) technical specification group service and system aspects (TSG SA) workgroup 1 (SA1) , the achievable performance of XR traffic modeling has been evaluated for the XR study during an XR study item (SI) phase in release 17 (Rel-17) . The characteristics of XR traffic and challenges are summarized below.

[0036] - High data rate, data rate up to 60Mbps

[0037] - Low latency, latency up to 10ms

[0038] - High reliability, reliability up to 10-4

[0039] - High power consumption.

[0040] Moreover, in the traditional mobile network since a general packet radio service (GPRS) , quality of service (QoS) control is based on the concept of a flow and a packet. However, such scheduling does not consider the relationship between packets, which is important, especially for interactive media services like the XR services, since it is common that one unit of a media layer needs to be delivered via multiple packets. Furthermore, different media units may contribute differently to the user experience even if they are within a single stream. Thus the importance of media units is not unique from a media layer point of view.

[0041] To support the above integrated and differentiated transmission of media units (for example, a frame or a video slice) , a concept of a PDU set is introduced to denote the collection of packets (i.e. PDUs) carrying a media unit. The 5G network core (5GC) obtains the following information to support the PDU set level QoS handling:

[0042] - PDU set information, including PDU set sequence number, end PDU of the PDU set, PDU sequence number within a PDU set, PDU set size, and PDU set importance.

[0043] - PDU set level QoS parameters. PDU set Delay Budget (PSDB) and PDU set Error Rate (PSER) are introduced to control the delay and error rate on the PDU set level instead of the PDU level.

[0044] In the 5G era, mobile media services, cloud augmented reality (AR)  / virtual reality (VR) , cloud gaming, and video-based tele-control for machines or drones, are expected to contribute more and more traffic to the 5G network. All media traffic, in spite of which  codec is used, has some common characteristics.

[0045] For the maximum allowed end-to-end latency requirement of 5ms, the air interface transmission budget of NG-RAN is 2 ~ 3ms. In this case, it is not allowed to apply many retransmissions in the hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) and / or RLC ARQ operation to both increase reliability and reduce latency. Furthermore, the XR application has a high data rate of up to 60Mbps. The method to increase the reliability of repetition transmissions or use a larger PDU with a low modulation and coding scheme (MCS) in one link on one carrier will increase the load of a cell and a carrier.

[0046] For XR services with low latency and high reliability, to ensure the high reliability that can hardly be efficiently achieved by a single path on the user plane, PDCP duplication in the 5GS is supported. The redundant transmission is applied on the user plane path between the UE and the network. For example, to support the XR services, a UE may set up two redundant transmission links in the next generation RAN (NG-RAN) . When PDCP duplication is configured for a radio bearer by radio resource control (RRC) , at least one secondary RLC entity is added to the radio bearer to handle the duplicated PDCP PDUs. Duplication at the PDCP therefore consists of submitting the same PDCP PDUs multiple times where a PDCP PDU is submitted to each activated RLC entity for the same radio bearer. With multiple independent transmission paths, packet duplication therefore increases reliability and reduces latency and is especially beneficial for XR services.

[0047] According to embodiments of the present disclosure, there is provided a scheme for communication link control. With this scheme, a terminal device establishes one or more communication links with one or more network nodes for delivery of one or more data units.

[0048] By temporally suspending at least one communication link, it is allowed to save radio resources and reduce power consumption at the terminal device. In this way, it is possible to improve resource utilization, and thus improve transmission efficiency.

[0049] Hereinafter, principles and embodiments of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings. Reference is first made to FIG. 1A, which illustrates an example environment 100 in which example embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented.

[0050] The environment 100, which may be a part of a communication network, comprises a terminal device 110 and a plurality of network nodes 120-1…120-N, where N represents any suitable positive integer. For the purpose of discussion, the network nodes 120-1…120-N may be collectively or individually referred to as a network node 120.

[0051] The terminal device 110 may communicate with the network node 120. The communication between the terminal device 110 and the network node 120 may be direct or indirect. As an example, the terminal device 110 and the network node 120 may communicate with one or more further devices not shown in FIG. 1A.

[0052] To transmit data and / or control information, the terminal device 110 may perform communications with the network node 120. A link from the network node 120 to the terminal device 110 is referred to as a downlink (DL) , while a link from the terminal device 110 to the network node 120 is referred to as an uplink (UL) .

[0053] Although the terminal device 110 and the network node 120 are described in the communication environment 100 of FIG. 1A, embodiments of the present disclosure may equally apply to any other suitable communication devices in communication with one another. That is, embodiments of the present disclosure are not limited to the exemplary scenarios of FIG. 1A. In this regard, it is noted that although the terminal device is schematically depicted as a mobile phone and the network node 120 is schematically depicted as a base station in FIG. 1A, it is understood that these depictions are exemplary in nature without suggesting any limitation. In other embodiments, the first device 110 and the network node 120 may be any other communication devices, for example, any other wireless communication devices.

[0054] It is to be understood that the particular number of various communication devices and the particular number of various communication links as shown in FIG. 1A is for illustration purpose only without suggesting any limitations. The communication environment 100 may include any suitable number of communication devices and corresponding communication links for implementing embodiments of the present disclosure. In addition, it should be appreciated that there may be various wireless as well as wireline  communications (if needed) among all of the communication devices.

[0055] The communications in the environment 100 may follow any suitable communication standards or protocols, which are already in existence or to be developed in the future, such as Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) , long term evolution (LTE) , LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) , the fifth generation (5G) New Radio (NR) , Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) and Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) standards, and employs any suitable communication technologies, including, for example, Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) , Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) , time division multiplexing (TDM) , frequency division multiplexing (FDM) , code division multiplexing (CDM) , Bluetooth, ZigBee, and machine type communication (MTC) , enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) , massive machine type communication (mMTC) , ultra-reliable low latency communication (URLLC) , Carrier Aggregation (CA) , Dual Connectivity (DC) , and New Radio Unlicensed (NR-U) technologies.

[0056] FIGS. 1B and 1C illustrate example uplink duplication modes associated with some example embodiments of the present disclosure, where FIG. 1B illustrates example uplink duplication in carrier aggregation (CA) mode and FIG. 1C illustrates example uplink duplication in dual connectivity (DC) mode. As shown in FIG. 1B, the UE communicates with one gNB. The UE may transmit uplink duplication in two paths in CA to the gNB. As shown in FIG. 1C, the UE communicates with two gNBs, also referred to as gNB1 and gNB2. The UE is dually connected with the gNB1 and the gNB2. The UE may transmit uplink duplication in a path to the gNB1 and another path to the gNB2.

[0057] FIG. 2 illustrates a flowchart of a method implemented at a terminal device according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 200 will be described from the perspective of the terminal device 110 with reference to FIG. 1A.

[0058] At block 210, the terminal device 110 establishes one or more communication links with one or more of the network nodes 120-1…120-N, for delivery of one or more data units. It is noted that the one or more communication links may comprise one or more uplink paths or legs, and such terms “link” , “path” , and “leg” may be used interchangeably herein. The one or more data units may comprise one or more data units for the XR / media services. As an example, a data unit of the one or more data units may compise a PDU or a service data unit (SDU) . The one or more data units may comprise any other types of data units. The  scope of the present disclosure is not limited in this regard.

[0059] The one or more of the network nodes 120-1…120-N may configure the uplink duplication operation to the terminal device 110 and build the corresponding configuration, for example, RLC entities, granted resources, and so on. The terminal device 110 may inform the one or more of the network nodes 120-1…120-N of a service type, for example, uplink XR video and some characteristics of it, for example, a PDU set identification (ID) , PDU set important information, a PDU set delay budget (PSDB) , a PDU set error rate (PSER) , PDU set integrated handling information (PSIHI) , an end of data burst (EoDB) and so on, which may be carried together with uplink data.

[0060] As an example, the one or more communication links may comprise one or more communication links in CA. In this case, the terminal device 110 may transmit uplink duplication in the one or more communication links in CA to the network node 120.

[0061] As another example, the one or more communication links may comprise one or more communication links in DC. In this case, the terminal device 110 may communicate with multiple network nodes of the network nodes 120-1…120-N. For example, the terminal device 110 may be dually connected to the network nodes 120-1 and 120-2. The terminal device 110 may transmit uplink duplication in the one or more communication links in DC to the network nodes 120-1 and 120-2.

[0062] At block 220, the terminal device 110 determines whether to duplicate at least one of the one or more data units. As an example, the one or more of the network nodes 120-1…120-N may configure (or indicate) the terminal device 110 to perform the determination of whether to duplicate at least one of the one or more data units. Whether to duplicate at least one of the one or more data units may be determined in many ways.

[0063] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine whether to duplicate at least one of the one or more data units based on importance information of the at least one of the one or more data units. For example, in the embodiments where the data unit comprises the PDU, the importance information may comprise PDU set importance information. If an importance level of the at least one of the one or more data units is higher than or equal to a first threshold level, the terminal device 110 may determine to duplicate the at least one of the one or more data units. Otherwise, if the importance level of the at least one of the one or more data units is lower than a second threshold level, the terminal device 110 may determine not to duplicate the at least one of the one or more data units.  The first threshold level and / or the second threshold level may be pre-defined or received from the network node 120. For instance, uplink duplication may be configured to one or more video data radio bearers (DRBs) of XR services, but only activated for one or more PDU sets with higher importance and automatically not-duplicated for one or more PDU sets with lower importance.

[0064] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine whether to duplicate at least one of the one or more data units based on a data transmission condition of a target data unit or a target set of data units. The target data unit or the target set of data units may be transmitted in the one or more communication links to the one or more of the network nodes 120-1…120-N before the one or more data units, the transmission of which may be used as a reference for the duplication of the one or more data units. The target data unit or the target set of data units may also be referred to as a beacon data unit or a beacon set of data units.

[0065] In some examples, the terminal device 110 may determine the data transmission condition based on a packet error rate of the target data unit or a packet set error rate of the target set of data units. The one or more of the network nodes 120-1…120-N may inform the terminal device 110 of a channel condition report associated with the transmission of the target data unit or the target set of data units.

[0066] Alternatively or additionally, the terminal device 110 may determine the data transmission condition based on whether the target data unit or the target set of data units is received successfully in at least one communication link of the one or more communication links at the one or more of the network nodes 120-1…120-N. If the target data unit or the target set of data units is not received successfully at the one or more network nodes (i.e. not received successfully in either of the one or more communication links) , the terminal device 110 may determine to duplicate the at least one of the one or more data units. If the target data unit or the target set of data units is received successfully in at least one of the one or more communication links to the one or more of the network nodes 120-1…120-N, the terminal device 110 may determine not to duplicate the at least one of the one or more data units.

[0067] As an example, the target data unit or the target set of data units may comprise one or more data units of an I frame in a group of pictures (GoP) . In the embodiments where the target set of data units comprises one or more data units of an I frame, reference is made  to FIG. 3A, which illustrates an example beacon PDU set for determining uplink duplication for the XR / media services according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. In this case, the terminal device 110 may determine whether to duplicate a certain PDU set based on its PDU set importance information and transmission of the beacon PDU set. As an example, as shown in FIG. 3A, a PDU set with higher importance, i.e., the PDU set of an I frame in a GoP may be signed as the beacon PDU set for which duplication is always activated. Whether to duplicate one or more subsequent PDU sets with lower importance, for example, one or more PDU sets of P frames in a GoP may be determined based on the transmission of this beacon PDU set.

[0068] As another example, the target data unit or the target set of data units may comprise one or more data units of data units at the beginning of a P frame in a GoP. In the embodiments where the target data unit comprises a data unit at the beginning of a P frame, reference is made to FIG. 3B, which illustrates an example beacon PDU for determining uplink duplication for the XR / media services according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. In this case, the terminal device 110 may determine whether to duplicate one or more subsequent PDUs based on the transmission of the beacon PDU in a PDU set with lower importance, i.e., a PDU set of the P frame. For example, the first PDU of the P frame may be signed as the beacon PDU for which duplication is always activated. Whether to duplicate the subsequent PDUs in the PDU set of the P frame may be determined based on the transmission of this beacon PDU. Alternatively or additionally, the target data unit or the target set of data units may comprise one or more data units of data units at the beginning of an I frame in a GoP, and a similar approach may also apply.

[0069] Then, if the terminal device 110 determines to duplicate at least one of the one or more data units, the terminal device 110 may determine that at least one of the one or more communication links is not to be temporally suspended, as it is needed for the duplication of the at least one of the one or more data units. If the terminal device 110 determines not to duplicate at least one of the one or more data units, the terminal device 110 may determine to temporally suspend the at least one of the one or more communication links for resource saving, which will be discussed in detail with reference to block 230. It is noted that the temporal suspending of a communication link may sometimes comprise temporal deactivating or temporal interrupting the communication link, and such terms “suspend” , “deactivate” , and “interrupt” may be used interchangeably herein.

[0070] At block 230, the terminal device 110 determines that at least one of the one or more  communication links is to be temporally suspended, in the case where the at least one of the one or more data units is not to be duplicated. The terminal device 110 may determine which one or more communication links are to be temporally suspended by a variety of means.

[0071] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine which one or more communication links are to be temporally suspended based on information associated with the one or more communication links. As an example, the information may comprise information on link / channel quality of a communication link of the one or more communication links. The terminal device 110 may select a communication link with poor link / channel quality to temporally suspend. As another example, the information may comprise information on load or available resources of a carrier or a cell on which a communication link of the one or more communication links is carried. For example, the terminal device 110 may select a communication link with high load or low available resources to temporally suspend. The above information may be received from the one or more of the network nodes 120-1…120-N, and then the terminal device 110 may determine which uplink communication link is suspended temporarily based on the obtained information. Alternatively or additionally, the information may comprise a priority order to temporally suspend one or more of the communication links. In this case, the one or more of the network nodes 120-1…120-N may determine which one or more communication links may be temporally suspended, for example, based on the measured channel condition, and other information such as the load or available resources of the carrier / cell where the communication link of the one or more communication links is carried on. Then the one or more of the network nodes 120-1…120-N may inform the terminal device 110 of the priority order in which one or more communication links may be suspended temporarily in advance. Alternatively or additionally, the information may comprise pre-defined suspension information for temporally suspending one or more of the communication links. The pre-defined suspension information may be specified in the specification, and thus the terminal device 110 may determine which one or more communication links are to be temporally suspended by default.

[0072] In the example embodiments where the target data unit or the target set of data units is received successfully in all of the one or more communication links at the one or more of the network nodes 120-1…120-N, the terminal device 110 may determine which one or more communication links are to be temporally suspended based on the above information. As an example, if the beacon PDU or a PDU of the beacon PDU set is successfully received at  the one or more of the network nodes 120-1…120-N from all of the communication links, the terminal device 110 may determine which one or more communication links will be suspended based on the channel condition report, the available resources in carrier or the load cell informed, and / or based on the priority order indicated in advance, and / or by default.

[0073] In the example embodiments where the transmission of the target data unit or the target set of data units is used for determining the duplication of the one or more data units, the terminal device 110 may determine which one or more communication links are to be temporally suspended based on one or more target communication links in which failure occurs, or in other words, one or more failed target communication links. For example, if the target data unit or the target set of data units is not received successfully in the at least one target communication link at a network node of the network nodes 120-1…120-N providing the at least one target communication link, the at least one target communication link may be temporally suspended.

[0074] Referring back to FIG. 2, after determining the temporary suspending of the at least one communication link of the uplink duplication, the terminal device 110 indicates the temporal suspension to a network node of the network nodes 120-1…120-N providing the at least one of the one or more communication links to be temporally suspended. The temporal suspension may be indicated differently according to the scheduling mode of the terminal device.

[0075] In some examples where the scheduling mode for the terminal device 110 is a dynamic grant (DG) , to indicate the temporal suspension, the terminal device 110 may prevent from transmitting a buffer state report (BSR) to the network node providing the at least one of the one or more communication links to be temporally suspended. For example, in the embodiments where a target set of data units is used as a reference, for example, a beacon PDU set is set as a PDU set of the I frame, the terminal device 110 may inform the network node of the temporal suspension of the communication link (s) by not sending the BSR for an uplink resource grant, since it is expected that the network node does not schedule the whole PDU set of subsequent P frame (s) .

[0076] In some examples where the scheduling mode for the terminal device 110 is the DG, to indicate the temporal suspension, the terminal device 110 may transmit a BSR padded with zero to the network node providing the at least one of the one or more communication links to be temporally suspended. For example, in the embodiments where a target data unit is  used as a reference, for example, a beacon PDU is set as the first PDU of the P frame, the terminal device 110 may inform the network node of the temporal suspension of the communication link (s) by sending a zero-BSR (padding BSR=0) , since it is expected that the network node does not schedule the rest PDUs of the same PDU set of the P frame.

[0077] In some examples where the scheduling mode for the terminal device 110 is a configured grant (CG) , to indicate the temporal suspension, the terminal device 110 may transmit, to the network node providing the at least one of the one or more communication links to be temporally suspended, an indication of at least one unused resource associated with the at least one of the one or more communication links. The terminal device 110 may inform the network node to re-allocate the unused resource (s) in a scheduling period, for example, in a CG period or in a time period. The terminal device 110 may inform the network node to re-allocate the unused resource (s) in multiple ways. For example, the indication may be transmitted in uplink control information (UCI) . As another example, the indication may be transmitted in other signaling, such as a media access control control element (MAC CE) .

[0078] As shown in FIG. 2, the terminal device 110 transmits the one or more data units to the one or more of the network nodes 120-1…120-N via the communication links that are not suspended.

[0079] The suspension may be temporary. For example, the suspension may only be effective for subsequent data units or sets of data units before the next target data unit or the next target set of data units (for example, the next beacon PDU or beacon PDU set) . In the embodiments with reference to FIG. 3A, the suspension may only be effective for the P frames before the next I frame. In the embodiments with reference to FIG. 3B, the suspension may only be effective for the left PDUs in the current PDU set in which the beacon PCU is in. It is expected that the PDU transmission may be prevented on the temporarily suspended communication link (s) but not permanently deactivate or release the communication link (s) . Thus, for the next target data unit or the next target set of data units, the uplink duplication transmission may be resumed conveniently. In other words, the communication link (s) may have not been terminated, but some data units may not be sent on the communication link (s) in a suspension period.

[0080] In some example embodiments, to resume the at least one communication link temporally suspended, the terminal device 110 may transmit, to the network node providing  the at least one of the one or more communication links temporally suspended, a resume indication to resume the at least one communication link temporally suspended. As an example, the resume indication may be transmitted in a UCI. As another example, the resume indication may be transmitted in MAC CE. As a further example, the resume indication may be transmitted in a BSR.

[0081] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine a time period of the temporal suspension based on a suspension timer. The terminal device 110 may terminate the temporal suspension based on an expiration of the suspension timer.

[0082] In this way, by temporally suspending one or more communication links of uplink duplication, for example, based on importance information of one or more data units, transmission of a target data unit or a target set of data units, possibly together with link quality information cognized by the terminal device and load / resource information informed by the one or more network nodes, it is allowed to perform differentiated data unit handling in the uplink duplication, for example, for XR / media services. Then the resources and power can be saved.

[0083] FIGS. 4 and 5 illustrate example communication processes according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. Reference is made to FIG. 4 first, which illustrates an example communication process in a DC mode according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 400 will be described with reference to FIG. 1A. Accordingly, the UE 401 may be an example of the terminal device 110, and the master gNB (MgNB) 403 and the secondary gNB (SgNB) 405 may be examples of the network nodes 120-1…120-N. The process 400 further evolves the user plane function (UPF) 407.

[0084] As shown in FIG. 4, at 410, the PDU session and uplink duplication may be established. For example, the PDU set of an I frame in a GoP may be signed as a beacon PDU set. At 412 and 414, the UE 401 may transmit the beacon PDU set to the MgNB 403 and the SgNB 405 on both two paths of uplink duplication respectively. At 416, the SgNB 405 may then transmit the beacon PDU set to the MgNB 403. At 418, the MgNB 403 may transmit the I frame to the UPF 407. The MgNB 403 and the SgNB 405 may feed back the ACK / NACK of the HARQ process during the PDU transmission of the I frame.

[0085] At 420, the MgNB 403 may transmit, to the UE 401, the channel condition report of its main duplication path during the beacon-PDU-set transmission, and optionally the MgNB  403 may inform the UE 401 of the available resources / load in its cell. At 422, the SgNB 405 may transmit, to UE 401, the channel condition report of its duplication path during the beacon-PDU-set transmission, and optionally the SgNB 405 may inform the UE 401 of the available resources / load in its cell.

[0086] At 424, the UE 401 may compare the channel conditions of duplication paths indicated by the MgNB 403 and the SgNB 405, compare the available resources / load of the MgNB 403 and the SgNB 405, and then decide which path may be suspended temporally if the duplication is no longer needed for the subsequent PDU sets. Alternatively or additionally, the UE 401 may decide which path may be suspended temporally based on the priority order indicated by the network in advance or by default. For example, the UE 401 may decide that the path connected to the SgNB 405 is to be suspended temporarily.

[0087] Then at 426 and 428, the UE 401 may inform the decision of the temporary suspension to the SgNB 405 via the MgNB 403. For example, if a scheduling mode is a CG, the UE 401 may inform the SgNB 405 to re-allocate unused resources of a CG occasion in a scheduling period, for example, by a UCI or a MAC CE. Alternatively or additionally, if the scheduling mode is a DG, the UE 401 may not send, to SgNB 405, a BSR for an uplink resource request. At 430, the MgNB 403 may transmit P frame (s) to the UPF 407. At 432, the UE 401 may transmit further PDU sets to the MgNB 403. As the path connected to the SgNB 405 is suspended, only one path connected to the MgNB 403 is activated, and thus the subsequent PDU sets, for example, of the P frame (s) may not be transmitted from the UE 401 to the SgNB 405.

[0088] Operations and features as described above with reference to FIGS. 2 to 3B are likewise applicable to the process 400 and have similar effects. For the purpose of simplification, the details will be omitted.

[0089] FIG. 5 illustrates an example communication process in a CA mode according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 500 will be described with reference to FIG. 1A. Accordingly, the UE 501 may be an example of the terminal device 110, and the gNB 503 may be an example of the network node 120. The process 500 further evolves the UPF 505.

[0090] As shown in FIG. 5, at 510, the PDU session and uplink duplication may be established. For example, the PDU set of an I frame in a GoP may be signed as a beacon PDU set. At 512 and 514, the UE 501 may transmit the beacon PDU set to the gNB 503 on  both two paths of uplink duplication respectively. At 516, the gNB 503 may transmit the I frame to the UPF 407. The gNB 503 may feed back the ACK / NACK of the HARQ process during the PDU transmission of the I frame.

[0091] At 518, the gNB 503 may transmit, to the UE 501, the channel condition report of duplication paths during the beacon-PDU-set transmission, and optionally the gNB 503 may inform the UE 501 of the available resources / load of its carrier. At 520, the UE 501 may compare the channel conditions of duplication paths indicated by the gNB 503, compare the available resources / load, and then decide which path may be suspended temporally if the duplication is no longer needed for the subsequent PDU sets. Alternatively or additionally, the UE 501 may decide which path may be suspended temporally based on the priority order indicated by the gNB 503 in advance or by default.

[0092] Then at 522, the UE 501 may inform the decision of the temporary suspension of a path to the gNB 403. For example, if the scheduling mode is a CG, the UE 501 may inform the gNB 503 to re-allocate the unused resources of a CG occasion in a scheduling period, for example, by a UCI or a MAC CE. Alternatively or additionally, if the scheduling mode is a DG, the UE 501 may not send, to gNB 503, a BSR for an uplink resource request. At 524, the gNB 503 may transmit P frame (s) to the UPF 505. At 526, the UE 501 may transmit further PDU sets to the gNB 403.

[0093] Operations and features as described above with reference to FIGS. 2 to 3B are likewise applicable to the process 500 and have similar effects. For the purpose of simplification, the details will be omitted.

[0094] In some example embodiments, an apparatus capable of performing the method 200 (for example, the terminal device 110) may comprise means for performing the respective steps of the method 200. The means may be implemented in any suitable form. For example, the means may be implemented in a circuitry or software module.

[0095] In some example embodiments, the apparatus comprises means for establishing one or more communication links with one or more network nodes for delivery of one or more data units; means for determining whether to duplicate at least one of the one or more data units; means for, in the case where the at least one of the one or more data units is not to be duplicated, determining that at least one of the one or more communication links is to be temporally suspended; means for indicating the temporal suspension to a network node of the one or more network nodes providing the at least one of the one or more communication  links; and means for transmitting the one or more data units to the one or more network nodes via the communication links that are not suspended.

[0096] In some example embodiments, the means for determining whether to duplicate the at least one of the one or more data units comprises means for determining to duplicate the at least one of the one or more data units, based on determining that an importance level of the at least one of the one or more data units is higher than or equal to a first threshold level; or means for determining not to duplicate the at least one of the one or more data units, based on determining that the importance level of the at least one of the one or more data units is lower than a second threshold level.

[0097] In some example embodiments, a target data unit or a target set of data units is transmitted in the one or more communication links to the one or more network nodes before the one or more data units, and the means for determining whether to duplicate the at least one of the one or more data units comprises means for determining whether to duplicate the at least one of the one or more data units, based on a data transmission condition of the target data unit or the target set of data units. In some example embodiments, the apparatus further comprises means for determining the data transmission condition of the target data unit or the target set of data units based on at least one of the following: a packet error rate of the target data unit or a packet set error rate of the target set of data units; and whether the target data unit or the target set of data units is received successfully in at least one communication link of the one or more communication links at the one or more network nodes. In some example embodiments, the apparatus further comprises means for determining to duplicate the at least one of the one or more data units, based on determining that the target data unit or the target set of data units is not received successfully at the one or more network nodes; and means for determining that at least one of the one or more communication links is not to be temporally suspended, based on determining that the at least one of the one or more data units is not to be duplicated. In some example embodiments, the target data unit or the target set of data units comprises one or more data units of an I frame in a group of pictures, or comprises one or more data units of data units at the beginning of a P frame in the group of pictures.

[0098] In some example embodiments, the apparatus further comprises means for determining the at least one of the one or more communication links to be temporally suspended based on information associated with the one or more communication links, the information comprising at least one of the following: information on link quality of a  communication link of the one or more communication links; information on load or available resources of a carrier or a cell on which a communication link of the one or more communication links is carried; a priority order to temporally suspend one or more of the communication links; or pre-defined suspension information for temporally suspending one or more of the communication links. In some example embodiments, one or more of the information are received from the one or more network nodes. In some example embodiments, the means for determining the at least one of the one or more communication links to be temporally suspended based on the information comprises means for, based on determining that a target data unit or a target set of data units transmitted before the one or more data units is received successfully in all of the one or more communication links at the one or more network nodes, determining the at least one of the one or more communication links to be temporally suspended based on the information.

[0099] In some example embodiments, the apparatus further comprises means for determining the at least one of the one or more communication links to be temporally suspended as at least one target communication link of the one or more communication links, based on determining that a target data unit or a target set of data units transmitted before the one or more data units is not received successfully in the at least one target communication link at a network node of the one or more network nodes providing the at least one target communication link.

[0100] In some example embodiments, a scheduling mode for the terminal device is a dynamic grant, and the means for indicating the temporal suspension comprises one of: means for preventing from transmitting a buffer state report to the network node providing the at least one of the one or more communication links; or means for transmitting a buffer state report padded with zero to the network node providing the at least one of the one or more communication links.

[0101] In some example embodiments, a scheduling mode for the terminal device is a configured grant, and the means for indicating the temporal suspension comprises transmitting, to the network node providing the at least one of the one or more communication links, an indication of at least one unused resource associated with the at least one of the one or more communication links. In some example embodiments, the indication is transmitted in at least one of: uplink control information; or a media access control control element.

[0102] In some example embodiments, the apparatus further comprises means for  transmitting, to the network node providing the at least one of the one or more communication links, a resume indication to resume the at least one communication link temporally suspended. In some example embodiments, the resume indication is transmitted in at least one of: uplink control information; a media access control control element; or a buffer status report.

[0103] In some example embodiments, a data unit of the one or more data units comprises a protocol data unit or a service data unit.

[0104] In some example embodiments, the one or more communication links comprise one of the following: one or more communication links in carrier aggregation; or one or more communication links in dual connectivity.
