AI Technical Summary
Positioning measurements with insufficient measurement time duration pose challenges in communication technologies, particularly for global navigation satellite system (GNSS) measurements, where the available measurement time may not be sufficient to complete the positioning process accurately.
A terminal device and network device system that allows the terminal device to transmit an indication of the required positioning measurement time to the network device. The system determines whether the supported time duration by the network device is sufficient. If not, the terminal device can either transition to a different state, perform the measurement within a supported time duration, or hand over to another network device after completing the measurement.
This solution enables the support of positioning measurements with insufficient measurement time duration, reducing the negative impacts on positioning accuracy and defining clear behavior for terminal and network devices, thereby enhancing the reliability of positioning measurements.

Abstract
Description
POSITIONING MEASUREMENT WITH INSUFFICIENT MEASUREMENT TIME DURATIONFIELD

[0002] In a communication technology, there is a constant evolution ongoing in order to provide efficient and reliable solutions for utilizing wireless communication networks. Each new generation has its own technical challenges for handling different situations and processes that are needed to connect and serve devices connected to wireless networks. To meet the demand for wireless data traffic having increased since deployment of 4th generation (4G) communication systems, efforts have been made to develop an improved 5th generation (5G) , pre-5G, 6G communication systems or beyond.
[0003] To allow for positioning measurement, especially for global navigation satellite system (GNSS) measurement, 3GPP agreed on that the network could trigger the UE to perform the positioning measurement e.g. when a positioning validity duration is about to expire, and the UE may autonomously trigger the positioning measurement if the UE does not receive the trigger from the network. However, positioning measurement with insufficient measurement time duration needs to be further studied and enhanced.SUMMARY

[0041] As used herein, the term “resource” , “transmission resource” , “resource block” , “physical resource block” (PRB) , “uplink (UL) resource” or “downlink (DL) resource” may refer to any resource for performing a communication, for example, a communication between a terminal device and a network device, such as a resource in time domain, a resource in frequency domain, a resource in space domain, a resource in code domain, a resource in a combination of more than one domain or any other resource enabling a communication, and the like. In the following, a resource in time domain (such as, a subframe) will be used as an example of a transmission resource for describing some example embodiments of the present disclosure. It is noted that example embodiments of the present disclosure are equally applicable to other resources in other domains.
[0042] In the scenario of Internet of Thing (IoT) over a non-terrestrical network (NTN) , the UE may not able to communicate with a NTN system and perform GNSS measurements simultaneously. GNSS measurements may be needed for the UE to perform pre-compensation of uplink transmissions in terms of time and frequency adjustments. Such pre-compensation may be needed, when the NTN system is operating under low-earth orbit satellites, which move at about 28,000 km / h relative to the earth. The pre-compensation may be based on the UE being aware of the target satellite’s position and the UE’s own position acquired via GNSS. By calculating the distance between the UE and the satellite and how the distance will change during a transmission, the UE can determine when to transmit.
[0043] Rel-17 agreed that a UE will move to the RRC idle state when the UE has to perform a GNSS measurement. However, moving to the RRC idle state will create overhead in terms of connection setup signaling if the UE has a long connection and is non-stationary, i.e., it may need to move to the RRC idle state to perform the GNSS measurements for multiple times.
[0044] In the discussions of Rel-18, RAN1 has agreed that, during RRC connected state, the eNB can aperiodically trigger the UE to perform a GNSS measurement, e.g. when the current GNSS validity duration is about to expire, and that the UE may autonomously trigger the GNSS measurement if the UE does not receive the eNB’s trigger. The length of an aperiodically triggered GNSS measurement gap and a UE autonomous measurement timer is based on a reported GNSS position fix time duration of the UE. For example, RAN1 has made some agreements. Some exemplary parts are shown in the text box below.
[0045] As discussed above, 3GPP has discussed that the network may trigger the UE to perform the GNSS measurement within a measurement gap and the UE may autonomously perform the GNSS measurement with a measurement timer. The network could configure the length of the measurement gap or the measurement timer, otherwise, the length of the measurement gap or the measurement timer could be equal to the latest reported GNSS position fix time duration for measurement. Traditionally, the length of the measurement gap or the measurement timer should be long enough to accommodate the GNSS position fix time duration required by the UE to complete the GNSS measurement within the measurement gap or the measurement timer.
[0046] However, sometimes the UE may have a GNSS position fix time duration not supported by the network, e.g., the GNSS position fix time duration may be longer than or different from the length of the measurement gap or the measurement timer supported by network. Positioning measurement with insufficient measurement time duration (e.g., a measurement gap or a measurement timer) needs to be further studied and enhanced.
[0047] Therefore, example embodiments of the present disclosure provide solutions for supporting positioning measurement with insufficient measurement time duration. According to some embodiments of the present disclosure, a terminal device (e.g., a UE) transmits, to a network device (e.g., an eNB or a gNB) , under a first state, an indication of a first time duration for a first positioning measurement required by the terminal device. Then, the terminal device determines whether the first time duration is supported by the network device or not. In response to determining that the first time duration is not supported by the network device, the terminal device conducts at least one of the following: transiting to a second state rather than performing the first positioning measurement; performing the first positioning measurement during a second time duration supported by the network device; or performing the first positioning measurement and a handover to another network device after the first positioning measurement is completed.
[0048] It is understood that the above procedure steps may work together, in a flow of operations as described below, partly together or independently of each other. By implementing the embodiments of the present disclosure, positioning measurement with insufficient measurement time duration could be supported, the behavior of the terminal device and the network device is clearly defined, thereby reducing negative impacts of the insufficient measurement time duration on the positioning measurement and enabling more accurate positioning measurement.
[0049] For illustrative purposes, principles and example embodiments of the present disclosure of supporting positioning measurement with insufficient measurement time duration will be described below with reference to FIG. 1 through FIG. 7. However, it is to be noted that these embodiments are given to enable the skilled in the art to understand inventive concepts of the present disclosure and implement the solutions as proposed herein, and not intended to limit scope of the present application in any way.
[0050] FIG. 1 illustrates an example of an application scenario 100 in which some example embodiments of the present disclosure may be implemented. The network environment 100, which may be a part of a communication network, includes a terminal device 110, a first network device 120-1, and a second network device 120-2.
[0051] As illustrated in FIG. 1, the terminal device 110 may also be referred to as a user equipment 110 or a UE 110. The first network device 120-1 may also be referred to as a gNB 120-1. The second network device 120-2 may also be referred to as a gNB 120-2. The first network device 120-1 may provide a serving cell for the terminal device 110, and the terminal device 110 may have a connection with the network device 120-1 in a radio resource control (RRC) connected state. The second network device 120-2 may be another network device to which the terminal device 110 could perform a handover from the first network device 120-1. The terminal device 110 may perform positioning measurements (e.g., GNSS measurements) under the coverages of the first network device 120-1 or the second network device 120-2.
[0052] FIG. 2 illustrates an example signaling process 200 implemented at a terminal device 110 in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For ease of understanding, the process 200 will be described with reference to FIG. 1.
[0053] As shown in FIG. 2, the terminal device (e.g., the UE) 110 may be in a connection with the network device (e.g., the first network device) 120-1. The terminal device 110 may transmit 215, to a network device 120-1, under a first state, an indication of a first time duration for a first positioning measurement required by the terminal device 110. Then, the terminal device 110 may determine whether the first time duration is supported by the network device 120-1 or not. Afterwards, in response to determining that the first time duration is not supported by the network device 120-1, the terminal device 110 may conduct at least one of the following operations 225a to 225c in Case 1 to Case 3.
[0054] Correspondingly, the network device 120-1 may receive, from the terminal device 110 under a first state, an indication of a first time duration for a first positioning measurement required by the terminal device 110. Then, the network device 120-1 may determine 230 whether the first time duration is supported by the network device 120-1 or not. Afterwards, in response to determining that the first time duration is not supported by the network device 120-1, the network device 120-1 may determine the terminal device 110 will conduct at least one of the following operations 235a to 235c in Case 1 to Case 3. In this way, the terminal device 110 and the network device 120-1 could have a common understanding on the behavior of the terminal device 110 during the positioning measurement with insufficient measurement time duration.
[0055] In some example embodiments, the first state may be a RRC connected state, and the second state may be a RRC idle state or a RRC inactive state.
[0056] In some example embodiments, the fourth time duration may be a positioning validity duration during which a previous positioning measurement is valid. In some example embodiments, the positioning validity duration may be an original GNSS validity duration reported by the terminal device or an extended GNSS validity duration with the extension of original GNSS validity duration by duration X.
[0057] The duration X is defined as below as agreed in 3GPP RAN1.
[0058] Regarding Case 1, in some example embodiments, the terminal device 110 may transit 225a to a second state rather than performing the first positioning measurement. Corresponding, the network device 120-1 may determine 235a that the terminal device 110 will transit to a second state rather than performing the first positioning measurement. In this case, for example, the terminal device 110 may transit from a RRC connected state to a RRC idle state or a RRC inactive state, and do not perform the first positioning measurement. That is, the terminal device 110 will not perform the positioning measurement, instead move to the RRC idle state or the RRC inactive state and then perform a new positioning measurement.
[0059] Regarding Case 2, in some example embodiments, the terminal device 110 may perform 225b the first positioning measurement during a second time duration supported by the network device 120-1. Corresponding, the network device 120-1 may determine 235b that the terminal device 110 will perform the first positioning measurement during a second time duration supported by the network device 120-1. The second time duration may be one of the set of time durations supported by the network device 120-1 and has a nearest value to the first time duration and is not shorter than the first time duration. In this case, for example, the terminal device 110 perform the first positioning measurement under another time duration supported by the network device 120-1 rather than the first time duration.
[0060] Regarding Case 3, in some example embodiments, the terminal device 110 may perform 225c the first positioning measurement and a handover to another network device (e.g., the network device 120-2) after the first positioning measurement is completed. Corresponding, the network device 120-1 may determine 235c that the terminal device 110 will perform the first positioning measurement and a handover to another network device after the first positioning measurement is completed. In this case, for example, the terminal device 110 still perform the first positioning measurement but will handover to another network device after the first positioning measurement is completed.
[0061] In some example embodiments, the network device 120-1 may send a handover command to UE before the UE performs the first positioning measurement. The handover includes at least one of the location-based handover, time-based handover or radio-event based handover.
[0062] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 110 may receive, from the network device 120-1, an indication of a set of time durations supported by the network device 120-1 for the first positioning measurement. In some example embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine the first time duration is not supported by the network device 120-1 by determining the first time duration is different from all of the set of time durations. Alternatively or additionally, the terminal device 110 may determine the first time duration is not supported by the network device 120-1 by determining the first time duration is longer than all of the set of time durations.
[0063] Alternatively or additionally, the terminal device 110 may receive, from the network device 120-1, an indication of a third time duration for the first positioning measurement. The network device 120-1 may determine the third time duration which is shorter than the first time duration. In some example embodiments, the terminal device 110 is caused to determine the first time duration is not supported by the network device 120-1 by: determining the third time duration is shorter than the first time duration.
[0064] Alternatively or additionally, the terminal device 110 may determine the first time duration is not supported by the network device 120-1 by: determining the first time duration is longer than a remaining serving time duration of the network device 120-1. In some example embodiments, the terminal device 110 may receive, from the network device 120-1, an indication of the remaining serving time duration. In some example embodiments, the terminal device 110 may receive, from the network device 120-1, an indication of a reference point and a radius of a cell supported by the network device 120-1, and determine, the remaining serving time duration based on the reference point, the radius and a location of the terminal device 110.
[0065] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 110 may receive, from the network device 120-1, an indication of a resume identification for the terminal device 110. Then, the terminal device 110 may suspend the connection with the network device 120-1. The network device 120-1 may indicate the terminal device 110 to suspend a connection with the network device 120-1. In some example embodiments, the terminal device 110 may perform a second positioning measurement, and resume the connection with the network device 120-1 when the second positioning measurement is completed.
[0066] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 110 may perform the first positioning measurement during the first time duration in response to determining that the first time duration is supported by the network device 120-1.
[0067] In some example embodiments, the indication of the first time duration or the indication of the third time duration may be transmitted via a RRC signaling or a medium access control (MAC) control element (CE) signaling.
[0068] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 110 may transit to the second state rather than performing the first positioning measurement based on an expiry of a fourth time duration.
[0069] In some example embodiments, the positioning measurement may be an autonomous positioning measurement triggered by the terminal device 110, or a network device 120-1 indicated positioning measurement.
[0070] By implementing the above embodiments described with reference to FIG. 2, positioning measurement with insufficient measurement time duration could be supported. With the above embodiments as described above, the behavior of the terminal device 110 and the network device 120-1 is clearly defined for the positioning measurement with insufficient measurement time duration, thereby reducing negative impacts of the insufficient measurement time duration on the positioning measurement and enabling more accurate positioning measurement.
[0071] FIG. 3 illustrates a flowchart of an example process 300 of behavior of a terminal device 110 in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure.
[0072] It is noted that the process 300 may be considered as an embodiment or a more specific example of the process 200 as shown in FIG. 2. For ease of understanding, the process 300 will be described with reference to FIG. 1.
[0073] As shown in FIG. 3, at 310, the terminal device (e.g., the UE) 110 may be configured to perform GNSS measurement (e.g., the autonomous GNSS measurement or the GNSS measurement triggered by the network device 120-1) . At 315, the terminal device 110 may report / transmit, to the network device (e.g., the eNB or gNB) 120-1, under a RRC connected state, an indication of the GNSS position fix time duration required by the terminal device 110. In some example embodiments, the indication of the GNSS position fix time duration may be transmitted via a signaling, e.g., a RRC signaling or a MAC CE signaling.
[0074] At 320, the terminal device 110 may determine whether it has received a set of GNSS measurement timer or GNSS measurement gap values supported by the eNB 120-1 or not. The network device 120-1 may broadcast or configure the set of supported GNSS measurement timer or GNSS measurement gap values to the terminal device 110 via a system information block (SIB) or a RRC message.
[0075] Based on determining that the terminal device 110 received the set of GNSS measurement timer or GNSS measurement gap values supported by the eNB 120-1, at 325, the terminal device 110 may determine whether the reported fix time duration is longer than all of the set of GNSS measurement timer or GNSS measurement gap values supported by the eNB 120-1. Based on determining that the reported fix time duration is longer than all of the set of GNSS measurement timer or GNSS measurement gap values, the terminal device 110 may transit to a RRC idle state or a RRC inactive state rather than performing the GNSS measurement. Alternatively, based on determining that the reported fix time duration is not longer than all of the set of GNSS measurement timer or GNSS measurement gap values, at 330, the terminal device 110 may determine whether the reported GNSS position fix time duration is different from the all of the set of GNSS measurement timer or GNSS measurement gap values.
[0076] Based on determining that the reported GNSS position fix time duration is different from the all of the set of GNSS measurement timer or GNSS measurement gap values, at 335, the terminal device 110 may select a second time duration supported by the network device 120-1, the second time duration may be one of the set of GNSS measurement timer or GNSS measurement gap values supported by the network device 120-1 and has a nearest value to the first time duration and is not shorter than the first time duration. Afterwards, at 340, the terminal device 110 may perform GNSS measurement during the second time duration.
[0077] Alternatively or additionally, based on determining that the reported GNSS position fix time duration is not different from the all of the set of GNSS measurement timer or GNSS measurement gap values, the process 300 will go to 340, and the terminal device 110 may perform GNSS measurement during the reported GNSS position fix time duration.
[0078] Returning back to 320, based on determining that the terminal device 110 does not receive the set of GNSS measurement timer or GNSS measurement gap values supported by the eNB 120-1, at 345, the terminal device 110 may receive, from the network device 120-1, a GNSS measurement timer or a GNSS measurement gap value via a MAC CE signaling. Alternatively, the GNSS measurement timer or the GNSS measurement gap value may also be transmitted via other signaling, e.g., a RRC signaling or downlink control information (DCI) . The GNSS measurement timer or a GNSS measurement gap value may be determined by the network device 120-1 and transmitted to the terminal device 110 in response to the network device 120-1’s reception of the reported GNSS position fix time duration.
[0079] At 350, the terminal device 110 may determine whether the reported GNSS position fix time duration is longer than the GNSS measurement timer or the GNSS measurement gap value configured by the network device 120-1 via the MAC CE signaling. Based on determining that the reported GNSS position fix time duration is longer than the GNSS measurement timer or the GNSS measurement gap, at 360, the terminal device 110 may move / transit to a RRC idle state or a RRC inactive state. Alternatively or additionally, based on determining that the reported GNSS position fix time duration is not longer than the GNSS measurement timer or the GNSS measurement gap, the process 300 will go to 340 and the terminal device 110 may perform GNSS measurement during the reported GNSS position fix time duration.
[0080] Returning back to 315, at 355, alternatively or additionally, the terminal device 110 may determine whether the reported GNSS position fix time duration is longer than a remaining serving time duration of the network device 120-1. Based on determining that the GNSS position fix time duration is longer than a remaining serving time duration, the process 300 will go to 360, and the terminal device 110 may move / transit to a RRC idle state or a RRC inactive state. Alternatively or additionally, based on determining that the reported GNSS position fix time duration is not longer than a remaining serving time duration, the process 300 will go to 340, and terminal device 110 may perform GNSS measurement during the reported GNSS position fix time duration. In some example embodiments, the terminal device 110 may perform a handover to a new cell supported by another network device (e.g., the network device 120-2) after the GNSS measurement is completed.
[0081] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 110 may receive, from the network device 120-1, an indication of the remaining serving time duration. For example, for earth fixed cells, the remaining serving time duration may be based on a t-service broadcasted by the network device 120-1, the t-service may define when the current serving cell will stop serving the current area. Alternatively or additionally, the terminal device 110 may receive, from the network device 120-1, an indication of a reference point and a radius of a cell supported by the network device 120-1, and determine, the remaining serving time duration based on the reference point, the radius and a location of the terminal device 110. This may apply for earth moving cells.
[0082] In some example embodiments, at 355, based on determining that the GNSS position fix time duration is longer than a remaining serving time duration, the terminal device 110 may trigger an early handover to the new cell supported by the another network device. For example, the terminal device 110 may send a handover request to the network device 120-1. Alternatively or additionally, the network device 120-1 may indicate the terminal device 110 to perform the early handover. In this case, the handover steps related to the current serving cell will be performed before the expiry of GNSS validity duration, then the terminal device 110 may perform the GNSS measurement during the GNSS position fix time duration, and finally the terminal device 110 may execute the handover steps related to the new cell after the terminal device 110 has successfully re-acquired a new GNSS.
[0083] In some example embodiments in which the terminal device 110 moves / transits to a RRC inactive state in 360, the terminal device 110 may receive, from the network device 120-1, an indication of a resume identification (e.g., resume ID) for the terminal device 110. The resume ID may be an inactive radio network temporary identifier (I-RNTI) or other relevant parameters. Then, the terminal device 110 may suspend the connection with the network device 120-1. Further, in some example embodiments, the terminal device 110 may perform a second positioning measurement, and resume the connection with the network device 120-1 when the second positioning measurement is completed.
[0084] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 110 may be configured with the autonomous positioning measurement. In such embodiments, the GNSS measurement in 340 and the RRC state transition in 360 may be based on an expiry of a fourth time duration. For example, the fourth time duration may be a positioning validity duration during which a previous positioning measurement is valid. The validity duration may be an original GNSS validity duration or an extended GNSS validity duration.
[0085] Alternatively, the terminal device 110 may not be configured with the autonomous positioning measurement and the position measurement may be a network device 120-1 indicated positioning measurement. In such GNSS measurement, the GNSS measurement in 340 and the RRC state transition in 360 may be based on a trigger from the network device 120-1, e.g., a MAC CE signaling or a RRC signaling.
[0086] Although FIG. 3 mainly describes the behavior of the terminal device 110, to have a common understanding of the positioning measurement between the network device 120-1 and the terminal device 110, in some example embodiments, the network device 120-1 may receive, from the terminal device 110 under the RRC connected state, an indication of the GNSS position fix time duration required by the terminal device 110. The network device 120-1 may also perform corresponding or same actions as those of the terminal device 110 in 320 to 360. In this way, the network device 120-1 will also know the behavior of the terminal device 110.
[0087] By implementing the above embodiments described with reference to FIG. 3, positioning measurement with insufficient measurement time duration could be supported, the behavior of the terminal device 110 and the network device 120-1 is clearly defined, thereby reducing negative impacts of the insufficient measurement time duration on the positioning measurement and enabling more accurate positioning measurement.
