AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing technologies face challenges in managing subsequent conditional PScell addition or change conditions efficiently after a secondary cell group release, leading to increased signaling overhead and interruption time during SCG changes.

Method used

A master node sends execution conditions for conditional primary secondary cell addition (CPA) to a user node, which updates the CPC condition to a CPA condition for execution after a secondary cell group release. This involves configuring the user node to maintain measurement configurations associated with the released SCG and evaluating SCPAC conditions based on A3 or A5 event conditions.

Benefits of technology

This solution reduces signaling overhead and interruption time during SCG changes by enabling the user node to preconfigure CPA conditions before the SCG release, allowing for efficient evaluation and execution of SCPAC configurations after the release.

However, the same or equivalent functions and sequences may be accomplished by di f ferent examples .

[0070] An obj ective is to manage subsequent PScell addition or change conditions such that a user node is configured to update an initial CPC condition for evaluation of candidate subsequent PScell addition or change configurations to a CPA condition to enable execution of the CPA upon or after a SCG release .

[0071] According to an example embodiment , a master node may be configured to configure a user node for a subsequent CPA before or during release of a SCG configuration . The user node may be enabled to update a CPC condition to achieve a CPA condition upon the SCG release . The CPC condition may be updated by updating a configured A3 / A5 condition to be partially applied for a subsequent CPA with measurements of a released PScell as a serving PScell , or by updating the A3 / A5 condition into a A4 condition . The method may enable a reduction of signal ling overhead and interrupting time forSCG change . When the user node is preconfigured with the CPA condition before the SCG release , the user node may evaluate the CPA condition for SCPAC configurations in advance and execute the CPA after a detected trigger, e . g . , based on a trigger provided by a network or based on detecting a single connectivity of the user node . Thi s enables , that i f the CPA condition is already met at the time of SCG release , it wil l save time for the user node to setup a new SCG link via executing the SCPAC configuration that met the CPA condition .

[0072] FIG . 1 illustrates an example of a communication system 100 comprising network nodes and at least one client node . The communication system 100 may comprise one or more base stations , such as gNBs . One of the base stations may act as a master node (MN) 104 . Further, one or more other base stations may act as secondary node ( SN) 106 . The communication system 100 may further comprise one or more client nodes , which may be also referred to as a user nodes or UE (user equipment ) . For example , the network may comprise a UE 102 . The UE 102 may communicate with one or more of the base stations via wireless radio channel ( s ) . Communications between UE 102 , MN 104 , and SN 106 may be bidirectional . Hence , any of the devices may be configured to operate as a transmitter and / or a receiver .

[0073] The base stations may be configured to communicate with core network elements , such as for example access and mobility management function (AMF) and / or user plane function (UPF) , over a communication interface , such as for example a control plane interface or a user plane interface NG-C / U . Base stations may be also called radio access network (RAN) nodes and they may be part o f a radio access network between the core network and the UEs . Network elements AMF / UPF and gNB may be generally referred to as network nodes or network devices . Although depicted as a single device , a network node might not be a stand-alone device , but forexample a distributed computing system coupled to a remote radio head .

[0074] The communication system 100 may be configured for example in accordance with the 5th Generation digital cellular communication network, as defined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Proj ect ( 3GPP ) . In one example , the communication network 100 may operate according to 3GPP 5G- NR (new radio ) . It is however appreciated that example embodiments presented herein are not limited to thi s example network and may be applied in any present or future wireless or wired communication networks , or combinations thereof , for example other type of cellular networks , short-range wireless networks , broadcast or multicast networks , or the like .

[0075] Dual connectivity ( DC ) allows a UE to simultaneously transmit and receive data on multiple component carriers from two serving nodes or cell groups . Dual connectivity may be allowed between two serving nodes operating in the same technology, or operating in di f ferent radio access technologies (RATs ) . The UE 102 may be configured to communicate with the MN 104 and the SN 104 via air interfaces , and perform dual connectivity with a master cell group (MSG) and a secondary cell group ( SCG) . The MN 104 and the SN 106 may be configured to operate in the same RAT or in di f ferent RATs . A case wherein the nodes are operating in di f ferent radio access technologies may be referred to as Multi-RAT dual connectivity . Example configurations of multi-radio dual connectivity (MR-DC ) include EN-DC (E-UTRA - NR Dual Connectivity) , NR-DC (New Radio Dual Connectivity) , NGEN-DC (NG-RAN - E-UTRA Dual Connectivity) and NE-DC (NR - E- UTRA Dual Connectivity) .

[0076] In MR-DC, a MN may refer to a radio access node configured to provide a control plane connection to the core network . The master node may be , for example , a master gNB .A master cell group (MCG) may refer to a group of serving cells associated with the master node . A secondary cell group ( SCG) may refer to a group of serving cells associated with a secondary node . The secondary node may refer to a radio access node without a control place connection to the core network . The secondary node may be configured to provide additional resources to a UE . The secondary node may be , for example , a secondary gNB . Each network node may have their own radio resource control (RRC ) entity, which may generate RRC protocol data units ( PDUs ) to be sent to the UE . A primary secondary cell ( PScell ) may refer to a secondary cell group cell in which a UE performs random access when performing reconfiguration with a sync procedure .

[0077] SCG reconfiguration may be performed through a RRC reconfiguration procedure . A RRC reconfiguration message may comprise conditional reconfiguration . A conditional reconfiguration may include configurations of one or more candidate cells and one or more execution conditions . The conditional reconfiguration may be for at least one of conditional a handover ( CHO, e . g . , change of a primary cell ) , a conditional PScell change ( CPC ) or a conditional PScell addition ( CPA) . A conditional reconfiguration procedure may be executed by a UE when the UE has evaluated that one or more execution conditions associated with the conditional reconfiguration are met . When the one or more execution conditions are met , the UE may be configured to connect to a target cell .

[0078] For example , a mobility procedure preconfigured to the UE that changes the UE ' s PScell may be referred to as the conditional PScell change ( CPC ) . During CPC, the UE may be configured to change SCG configuration from one cell group to another cell group, wherein PScell of each SCG may be di f ferent . The UE may execute the CPC once a predefined execution condition is met . The execution condition maycomprise, for example, one or more measurement events, such as a A3 event or a A5 event if the condition is determined by the SN. The event A3 is met when a neighbour PScell becomes offset better than serving PScell based on measurement results (e.g., RSRP) of the respective cells and an offset parameter defined for the event. The event A5 is met when a serving PScell becomes worse than a first threshold based on a measurement result of the respective cell (e.g., RSRP) and a neighbour PScell becomes better than a second threshold based on a measurement result of the respective cell (e.g., RSRP) . The A3 and A5 events may be configured as defined in TS 38.331. The events or conditions A3 and A5 may be evaluated by the UE by using serving SN measurement configurations.

[0079] For example, the UE may receive RRC reconfiguration message with CPC configuration and start to evaluate the CPC execution conditions for candidate PScell (s) . If at least one CPC candidate PScell satisfies the corresponding CPC execution condition, the UE completes the CPC execution procedure. The UE detaches from the source PScell, applies the stored corresponding configuration and synchronizes to the selected candidate PScell, i.e. a target PScell. Source PScell may be comprised in the source SCG controlled by a source SN. The target PScell may be comprised in the target SCG controlled by a target SN.

[0080] Type of the CPC may be either intra-SN CPC or inter-SN CPC, for example. In intra-SN CPC, the SN configured to control a secondary cell group (SCG) of the UE may be configured to stay the same. In other words, the source SN, or the SN controlling the source SCG, is the same as a target SN, i.e. the SN controlling the target SCG.

[0081] In inter-SN CPC, the SN controlling the SCG of the UE changes. In other words, the source SN, or the SN controlling the source SCG before the CPC execution isdifferent than a target SN controlling the target SCG after the CPC execution. For SN initiated inter-SN SCG selective activation, the source SN may be configured to generate the execution conditions for the initial CPC. Further, a candidate SN may be configured to generate execution conditions for subsequent CPC.

[0082] CPAC (conditional PScell addition or change) may be defined as the UE having network configuration for initiating access to a candidate PScell, either to consider the PScell as suitable for SN addition or SN change based on configured condition (s) . SCPAC may refer to a subsequent CPAC after an initial CPAC is performed. For example, the subsequent CPAC may refer to any CPAC after the initial CPAC. (S)CPAC execution condition and / or candidate PScell configuration can be updated, for example, by modifying the existing condition configurations. One or more candidate PScells may be configured in one or more radio resource control messages.

[0083] For a MN-initiated subsequent CPAC, the execution condition configuration may be provided as follows, for example :

[0084] a MN may be configured to generate the execution conditions (e.g., A4 event) for initial CPAC execution, and a measurement identifier may refer to the measurement configuration associated with MCG;

[0085] a candidate SN may be configured to generate the execution conditions (e.g., A3 / A5 event) for subsequent CPC execution, and the measurement identifier may refer to the measurement configuration associated with SCG.

[0086] CPA may refer to a situation where the UE does not have any SCG configuration and adds a SCG configuration. The UE may therefore move from a single connectivity to a dual connectivity. In case of CPA, the execution condition can be determined by the MN (as there is no SN) and can be configuredwith A4 event. The event A4 is met when a neighbour PScell becomes better than a threshold. For example, a signal level (refefence signal received power, RSRP) or quality (reference signal received quality, RSRQ) of the neighbor PScell may be above a threshold set for the RSRP or RSRQ. Before comparison of the signal level or quality with the threshold, a cell individual offset, a frequency-specific offset and hysteresis may be considered. This event A4 may be evaluated by the UE by using serving MN measurement configurations. A CPA conditional configuration can be used for CPC, but with different triggering conditions.

[0087] For example, when the execution condition of a CPC candidate PScell is met, the UE may be configured to perform the execution of CPC towards this candidate PScell. After finishing the PScell change, the UE may not release conditional configuration of other candidate PScells for subsequent CPC, and the UE may continue evaluating the execution conditions of other candidate PScells. When the execution condition of a candidate PScell is met, the UE may perform the execution of CPC towards this candidate PScell.

[0088] If the serving SCG is released, the UE may release the SCG measurement configurations and conditions. This creates a problem for execution of the candidate SCPAC configurations as the UE may not be able to determine execution of the candidate configurations without any condition. In an embodiment, the UE may be configured to modify at least one execution condition used for PScell change for at least one execution condition to be used for a PScell addition.

[0089] According to an example embodiment, the UE 102 may be configured for a subsequent CPA conditional configuration evaluation by a network node, i.e., the MN 104. In an example embodiment, a common measurement configuration and a A4 condition may be defined for all candidate subsequentconditional PScell addition / change configurations (a common A4 CPA measurement configuration) . This common A4 CPA measurement configuration may be, for example, preconfigured, e.g. during a CPC preparation. The common A4 CPA measurement configuration may be configured to be part of an MCG configuration. Pre-conf iguration of the execution conditions (A4 conditions) enables the UE to start evaluation of the execution conditions already before SCG release. Responsive to the SCG release, the UE 102 may be configured to start evaluating the A4 condition for retained SCPAC configurations. Alternatively, this may be controlled by the network, i.e., the network is configured to indicate to activate / deactivate the common A4 condition evaluation.

[0090] The UE 102 may be configured to perform the evaluation of common A4 condition continuously. However, if the condition is met, the UE 102 may be configured to execute the candidate SCPAC configuration if it is indicated by the network. Alternatively, the UE 102 may be configured to execute the candidate SCPAC configuration if the UE 102 is in single connectivity.

[0091] In an embodiment, instead of a common configuration, the MN 104 may be configured to provide a candidate PScell specific A4 condition and measurement configurations for the UE 102.

[0092] In an embodiment, the MN 104 may be configured to provide the A4 conditions and measurement configurations to the UE 102 responsive to the SCG release, e.g. at the time of the SCG release. For example, the A4 conditions configuration may be part of the measurement configurations. The UE 102 may be configured to release the SCG configuration and all relevant measurement configurations and related conditions. For example, the UE 102 may be configured to release at least one of initial or subsequent CPC condition configurations. The UE 102 may be configured to apply themeasurement configurations and A4 conditions provided by the MN 104 for the SCPAC candidate configurations retained after the SCG release . This enables , that the UE 102 may use the measurement configurations and conditions from the MN 104 even though the CPACs are subsequent CPACs , i . e . , even after the initial CPC was executed .

[0093] In an embodiment , upon a SCG release , the SCG configuration may be released, whereas the measurement configuration used for the candidate PScell configurations ( S-CPAC configurations ) can still be maintained ( i . e . , not released) at the UE . Hence , the UE 102 may continue evaluating a A3 / A5 execution condition for other candidate SNs for CPA ( in order to add a new SN) using measurement configuration of released SCG along with the PScell measurements of the released PScell . In this solution, a partial release mechanism on the UE side may be needed . In the partial release , the UE 102 may be configured to release SCG configuration but maintain the measurement configurations associated with the released SCG . The UE 102 may be configured to continue evaluation of the A3 / A5 execution condition, using the released PScell measurements for serving PScell measurements defined in A3 / A5 .

[0094] In case of SCG release , CPA may not be evaluated for the released SCG . Hence , the MN 104 may be configured to instruct the UE 102 to suspend evaluation of the released SCG . For example , the MN 104 may be configured to instruct the UE 102 to start a timer upon SCG release and upon expiry of the timer, the recent released SCG / PScell can be evaluated for CPA by the UE 102 .

[0095] Alternatively, the suspension instructions may comprise to mark after SCG release the corresponding conditional configuration as deactivated for that PScell . As part of the conditional configuration deactivation, CPA execution condition may not be evaluated for this releasedPScell. Upon DC, i.e. addition of another PScell, the conditional configuration of the released PScell may be configured to be marked as activated by the UE 102. Then, the CPC / CPA conditional evaluation can be started for the released PScell. The suspension instructions may be received by the UE 102, for example, in a RRC reconfiguration message received from the MN 104 for the SCG release.
