AI Technical Summary
Technical Problem
Current surgical tools, such as the Kerrison punch, are inefficient and prone to tissue damage due to repetitive squeezing actions, which can lead to fatigue and increased risk of pinching or tearing unintended tissue.
Method used
A surgical tool with an eccentrically rotating cutting edge, housed within a main body with a distal end featuring an angled foot plate, allowing for controlled exposure of cutting surfaces during rotation, thereby reducing tissue damage and improving efficiency.
Benefits of technology
The tool enables efficient removal of bone without the need for constant removal and reinsertion, reducing tissue damage and procedure time while enhancing safety by minimizing the risk of pinching or tearing adjacent structures.

Abstract
A surgical tool (10) for and method of removing a bone wherein a working end (20) of the tool eccentrically rotates with one or more cutting edges (24), such that in a first position the one or more cutting edges (24) is shielded by one or more surfaces of the distal end (14) of the main body (11) of the tool and in a second position at least one or more of the one or more cutting edges (24) are exposed for cutting a bone in contact therewith. The main body (11) has a foot plate (18) which guides positioning of the working end (20) and protects soft tissue and adjacent structures while removing bone.
