AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Solventless polyester-containing adhesives face issues with peeling off when cut to a specified shape or size and have poorer cuttability compared to organic solvent-based adhesives, necessitating a solution that enhances cutting properties while maintaining other adhesive qualities.

Method used

A pressure-sensitive adhesive composition comprising a polyester, a polyol with three or more hydroxyl groups, and an isocyanate-based crosslinking agent, substantially free of ethyl acetate and toluene, is formulated to achieve good cutting properties through a specific ratio of hydroxyl groups and molecular weights, forming a crosslinked structure with adequate cohesive strength.

Benefits of technology

The composition results in a pressure-sensitive adhesive sheet with improved cutting properties, reduced adhesive residue, and enhanced removability, suitable for surface protection applications.

Abstract

Provided is a pressure-sensitive adhesive composition which has makeup containing substantially neither ethyl acetate nor toluene and which can form polyester-containing pressure-sensitive adhesives that have good cuttability. The pressure-sensitive adhesive composition comprises a polyester (A), a polyol (B) having three or more hydroxyl groups, and an isocyanate-based crosslinking agent (C) having two isocyanate groups. The pressure-sensitive adhesive composition contains substantially neither ethyl acetate nor toluene. The polyol (B) has a number-average molecular weight of 200-20,000. The content of the polyol (B) is such that the ratio of the amount of hydroxyl groups BOH [mol] contained in the polyol (B) to the amount of hydroxyl groups AOH [mol] contained in the polyester (A), BOH / AOH, is in the range of 0.5-5.5.
