AI Technical Summary
Existing construction materials, such as cement, lack flexibility and are environmentally harmful, while organic colloidal dispersions, though flexible, are expensive and non-biodegradable, and both face challenges in transportation and environmental impact.
A mixture comprising water-insoluble lignins and solubilizers forms a solidified, water-resistant layer on substrates, using alkali-soluble lignins like kraft lignin, with optional additives to enhance properties and reduce dust and erosion.
The mixture provides a flexible, water-resistant layer that minimizes environmental pollution and transportation costs, passing stringent slake tests for durability and stability.

[0009] Soil stabilizer
[0010] The present invention primarily relates to the use of a mixture comprising or consisting of or consisting essentially of the constituents as defined herein for forming a solidified layer or area on / in a substrate. The invention further relates to a method for forming a solidified layer or area on / in a substrate comprising or consisting of the steps as defined herein.
[0011] 5 Moreover, the present invention relates to a mixture as defined herein, to a method for preparing a mixture as defined herein, as well as to a kit-of-parts comprising a mixture as defined herein.
[0012] Further aspects of the present invention will arise from the description below, in particular from the examples, as well as from the attached patent claims. 0 Being able to provide mixtures that are able to solidify substrates, such as soil, and that preferably also form a water-resistant layer or area on / in the substrates, is crucial for the use of many construction materials, for infrastructure projects and in particular in the mining industry.
[0013] Cement is usually used to provide water-resistant solidification of substrates, but cement-5 bound materials usually lack flexibility.
[0014] Organic colloidal dispersions are used for water-resistant solidification purposes with improved flexibility, but organic colloidal dispersions are usually expensive. Furthermore, colloidal dispersions usually rely on synthetic chemistry and typically exhibit low or no biodegradability.
[0015] It was therefore a primary object of the present invention to provide a mixture for forming a solidified layer or area on / in a substrate, preferably for forming a solidified and water- resistant layer or area on / in a substrate, which overcomes the above-mentioned problems. Another object of the present invention was to provide a mixture for said purpose, which - due to its high purity and / or concentration and / or efficiency and / or the nature of its constituents - can be transported to its place of use at minimized transport costs and / or can minimize environmental pollution per treated substrate unit.
[0016] According to a first aspect of the present invention, the stated object(s) is / are achieved by the use of a mixture comprising or consisting or consisting essentially of the following constituents
[0017] (i) one or more water-insoluble lignin(s) and / or one or more oxylignin(s), preferably one or more alkali-soluble lignin(s), more preferably one or more kraft lignin(s),
[0018] (ii) one or more solubilizer(s),
[0019] (iii) optionally one or more organic additive(s),
[0020] (iv) optionally one or more organic surfactant(s),
[0021] (v) optionally one or more adjuvant(s),
[0022] (vi) optionally water, for forming a solidified layer or area on / in a substrate, preferably for forming a solidified and water-resistant layer or area on / in a substrate, more preferably for (also) reducing dust formation and / or erosion of the substrate.
[0023] Erosion of a substrate includes in particular water erosion.
[0024] Whether or not a mixture is able to form a water-resistant layer or area on / in a substrate, can be tested by wet sieve dipping processes such as the slake test and / or DIN 19683- 16:2015-12 and / or ISO 10930:2012. Depending on the nature of the substrate and / or the size of the solidified layer or area on / in such substrate, adaptions to these test methods have to be made with respect to sample size and / or sieve size and / or dose rates. To carry out such tests, it is preferred to use dose rates and / or sample sizes and / or soil substrates as defined, preferably as used, herein. In doubt, the modified slake test defined herein is to be used.
[0025] The modified slake test is a sieve dipping test and is used to test if a mixture is able to form a water-resistant layer or area on / in a substrate. Preferably, a 95 wt.-% to 5 wt.-% mixture of quartz sand (particle size 0.5-1 mm, e.g. from WOLFF & MULLER Quarzsande GmbH) and bentonite (d99 < 63 pm, e.g. Edasil supplied from BayWa) is used as a soil substrate, which is able to pass the test sieve entirely in the non-hardened state. The mixture whose capacity of forming a water-resistant layer or area on / in a substrate is tested is referred to as the mixture in question. Cylindrical test samples as defined herein (cf. example 1 below) are prepared using a dose rate of the mixture in question of at least 3 g / kg with respect to the mass of the substrate, preferably using the optimum moisture content of the substrate for application of the mixture in question. The samples are allowed to harden at room temperature, preferably at 25°C, and under ambient humidity, preferably of 55 % relative humidity, for at least one day to give the hardened test samples. The (dry) mass of (each of) the hardened test samples is determined and the hardened test sample(s) is / are placed on a test sieve, which is capable of holding the hardened test specimen and allowing the non-hardened substrate to pass entirely. Preferably, the mesh size of the test sieve is higher than the maximum particle size of the substrate, preferably 5 % higher, most preferably the test sieve mesh size is 1 mm. The sieve holding the hardened test sample(s) is placed in a deionized water bath, preferably the water temperature is 20°C, so that the test sample(s) is / are well covered by the water. After an immersion time, preferably of two minutes, the sieve is gently moved in a horizontal direction to allow the loosened part of the substrate to pass the sieve. The person skilled in the art is aware that the energy of the horizontal movement will influence the outcome of the test and will usually minimize the effect of only the movement. The sieve is slowly lifted from the water and the residual test specimens is / are collected and dried. The residual (dry) mass of the hardened test specimen is determined. If the residual (dry) mass is greaterthan 10 wt.-% of the initial dry mass of this test specimen, the mixture in question is able to form a water-resistant layer or area on / in the substrate. An average of at least two test specimen is recommended to be used to determine if a mixture in question is able to form a water-resistant layer or area on / in a substrate. The higherthe residual mass, the betterthe mixture in question is suitable to form a water-resistant layer or area on / in a substrate.

[0135] To determine the water solubility, water dispersibility or water emulsifiability of a compound or mixture, a procedure as follows can be used: For determining the water solubility of solid, pasty or gelatinous compounds or mixtures, a defined amount of the compound or mixture (e.g. 5 g) is placed in a defined amount of water (e.g. 100 mL of distilled water) and stirred at 20°C for 24 hours. This system is then filtered (e.g. using Homyl 80-120 pm quantitative filter paper). The filter paper is then expertly dried and weighed. The mass ascertained, minus the mass of the filter, is the mass of the residue in grams. The difference between the defined amount of the compound (e.g. 5 g) and the mass of the residue in grams divided by the defined amount of water (e.g. 100 mL) gives the water solubility of the respective compound or mixture in g per litre.
[0136] For determining the water dispersibility of solid, pasty orgelatinous compounds or mixtures, a defined amount of the compound or mixture (e.g. 50 g) is placed in a defined amount of water (e.g. 1000 mL of distilled water) and homogenized at 20°C (e.g. using DISPERMAT® LC75 dissolver at 15 000 revolutions per minute for 5 minutes). The mixture is then centrifuged (e.g. at 1500 g for 10 min). The supernatant is decanted off and the precipitate is expertly dried and weighed. The mass ascertained is the mass of the precipitate after centrifuging. The difference between the defined amount of the compound or mixture (e.g. 50 g) and the mass of the precipitate after centrifuging divided by the defined amount of water (e.g. 1000 mL) is the water dispersibility of the compound or mixture.
[0137] For determining the water solubility or water emulsifiability of a liquid substance (for example rapeseed oil), the following procedure can be used: A defined amount of the compound (e.g. 5 g) is combined with a defined amount of water (e.g. 100 g of distilled water) and the system is stirred for 24 hours. The mixture is subsequently transferred to a separating funnel. The mixture is left to stand in the separating funnel for 5 minutes. If no phase separation occurs after this time, the mixture is left at rest for a further 2 hours, preferably a further 10 hours. If no phase separation occurs, the compound is deemed to be water soluble. The water solubility of the compound in this example is at least 50 grams per litre. If phase separation does occur, the phases are separated in the separating funnel and the organic phase is dried over sodium sulfate. The weight of the dried organic phase is determined (mass of the organic phase in grams). The difference between the defined amount of the compound (e.g. 5 g) and the mass of the organic phase in grams divided by the defined amount of water (e.g. 100 g) gives the water emulsifiability of the liquid compound. A further-preferred separation technique for dispersed and undispersed fractions is centrifugation. After appropriate drying, it is possible to determine the mass of the residue in grams and also, from this, the water solubility or water dispersibility.
[0138] Using the described solubility determination methods, one could also investigate the solubility of compounds or mixtures in alkaline and / or acidic solutions.

Preferably, it is reduced by 0.05 mm, preferably by 0.10 mm, preferably by 0.15 mm, preferably by 0.2 mm, preferably by 0.25 mm, preferably by 0.30 mm, preferably by 0.35 mm, preferably by 0.4 mm, preferably by 0.45 mm, preferably by 0.5 mm, preferably by 0.75 mm, preferably by 1 mm, preferably by 1 .5 mm, preferably by 2 mm, preferably by 2.5 mm, preferably by 3 mm, preferably by 3.5 mm, preferably by 4 mm, when measuring (and comparing) the swell of the respective swell specimen using applicable California Bearing Ratio (CBR) Norms. In doubt, South African National Standard (SANS 3001- GR40:2013) is used. Most preferably, the swell is reduced during freeze-thaw tests of solidified layers or areas of a substrate, in particular in the frozen state and / or in the remelted state. Consequently, the use of the mixtures as defined herein as swell and / or shrinkage reducers for substrates, preferably for soil, is also encompassed by the present invention.
[0216] According to a preferred embodiment, the mixture used according to the invention acts as a swell reducer. Preferably, the solidified layer or area on / in a substrate, bound with a mixture as defined herein, exhibits increased swell resistance, preferably when compared with a layer or area on / in the substrate treated under similar conditions but not with a mixture as defined herein (untreated layer or area on / in the substrate).
[0217] According to a preferred embodiment, the mixture used according to the invention acts as a rutting reducer. Preferably, the solidified layer or area on / in a substrate, bound with a mixture as defined herein, exhibits increased rutting resistance, preferably when compared with a layer or area on / in the substrate treated under similar conditions but not with a mixture as defined herein (untreated layer or area on / in the substrate).
[0218] According to a preferred embodiment, the mixture used according to the invention acts as a compaction aid, e.g. by facilitating compaction and / or reducing the energy needed for compaction. Preferably, the solidified layer or area on / in a substrate, bound with a mixture as defined herein, exhibits increased density, preferably when compared with a layer or area on / in the substrate treated under similar conditions but not with a mixture as defined herein (untreated layer or area on / in the substrate).
[0219] According to a preferred embodiment, the mixtures or a mixture used according to the invention act(s) as a freeze-thaw stabilizer(s) for substrates. Preferably, the solidified layer or area on / in a substrate, bound with the mixtures or a mixture as defined herein, exhibits increased freeze-thaw resistance, preferably when compared with a layer or area on / in the substrate treated under similar conditions but not with a mixture as defined herein (untreated layer or area on / in the substrate).
[0220] According to a preferred embodiment, the mixture used according to the invention acts as an ion-binder, preferably in the binding of one or more heavy metal(s). Most preferably, the heavy metal(s) is / are selected from the group consisting of copper, zinc, nickel, chromium, cadmium, lead, arsenic, thallium, and vanadium. An ion-binder can bind ions to reduce their mobility and / or solubility and / or washability and / or availability, preferably when the source of the respective ion is a substrate, preferably soil, most preferably a substrate as defined and / or used herein. Wether a substance is an ion binder or not, can be determined by means reported in the state of the art. In doubt, the analysis according to Table 11.1 .2-2, Technical Rules of LAGA “M 20” of treated and untreated soil (standard earth 0 - EEO) is used. A reduction of more than 5% is referred to as being significant. Thus, the mixture used according to the invention acts as an ion-immobilizer, preferably in the immobilization of heavy metal(s), most preferably of heavy metals as defined herein. Preferred detection methods for the heavy metals are DIN EN ISO 12846 (E12) (08-2012) and DIN EN ISO 12846 (E12) (08-2012). Consequently, the mixture used according to the invention can act as a chelator and / or complex former for heavy metal(s). The mixtures used according to the invention can preferably be used for soil remediation.

[0222] Also preferred is the use of a mixture as defined herein as a binder for tailings and / or stockpiles. Preferably, the use of the mixture prevents or reduces material loss from such tailings and / or stockpiles. Preferably, the use of the mixture increases the angle of repose with respect to the untreated tailings and / or stockpiles, thus increasing the stored material per area. Preferably, the mixture is applied as spray-on or via build-in method. Most preferred stockpiles are linked to the processing and / or storing of the following materials: Metals, preferably selected from the group consisting of gold, silver, palladium, molybdenum, strontium, titanium, rare earths, antimony, cobalt, tungsten, lithium, platinum, indium, iron, tungsten, and vanadium; raw materials, preferably selected from the group consisting of chalk, carbonates, lime, bauxite, mica, vermiculite, gypsum, soda, potash, quartz, phyllosilicates, preferably as defined herein, and clay; waste materials, preferably from the sewage, oil, gas and / or energy industry, most preferred fly ash, in particular fly ash class F and / or fly ash class C. [0359] Examples:
[0360] Materials and methods: Used chemicals
[0361] The used bitumen emulsion was a slow setting bitumen emulsion with a solid content of 60 wt.-% commercially available in South Africa (producer Tosas pty). As kraft lignin, a hard wood lignin derived from eucalyptus (abbreviated as “HWE”) was used (eco lig 101 from suzano) having a solids content of > 95 wt.-%, a pH of 4 in an aqueous solution (10% w / v), an ash content of < 5 wt.-%, a bulk density of 420 kg / m3, a glass transition temperature of 130°C, a d90 of < 50 pm, and a molecular weight Mwof 3000 g / mol. A soft wood kraft lignin derived from spruce (SWS) was also used having a lignin content of 95 wt.-%, a sulfur content of below 2.5 wt.-%, and a residual carbohydrate content of < 2.0 wt.-%. The particle size (d90) was < 60 pm, the bulk density was 450 kg / m3, and the average molecular weight 6250 g / mol. A soft wood kraft lignin derived from coniferous wood (SWC) was also used having a solid content of 65 wt.-%, an average molecular weight Mwof 5000 g / mol, an ash content of < 2 wt.-%, a sulfur content of < 2 wt.-%, a carbohydrate content of < 2 wt.-%, and a d99 of <100 pm (purchased from UPM under the name BioPiva 100). A hard wood lignin derived from beech (HWB) was also tested having an average molecular weight Mwof 8000 g / mol, a residual carbohydrate content of 8 wt.-%, a water content of below 2 wt.- %, and a sulfur content of approx. 0.07 wt.-%. HWB was not extracted using a kraft process, so the process is perceived to be sulfur-free (in contrast to the kraft process) and comprises steps of chopping wood into small pieces, steam explosion, leaching of hemicelluloses and enzymatic hydrolysis. Sodium lignosulfonate was purchased from Sappi.
[0362] Oxylignin was purchased from 3Plink International. Commercial alternatives are available under the tradenames Vanisperse A, an oxylignin produced by Borregaard LignoTech in Sarpsborg, Norway, Maracell XC-2, an oxylignin produced by LignoTech USA, Inc. (a member of the Borregaard Group) in Rothschild, Wis., and Vanillex, an oxylignin produced by DP & Chemical Division of Nippon Paper Industries Co., Ltd., Tokyo Japan.
[0363] Ampholak 7TX is a product of Nouryon and was purchased via Julius Hoesch GmbH and is a sodium talgampho polycarboxyglycinate. RediSet LQ1200 was purchased from Julius Hoesch GmbH and is a mixture comprising fatty acids, fatty acid reaction products with polyethylenepolyamines and polyethyleneamine. Pregelatinized starch (preg. starch, being a cold swelling starch) was purchased from Kbrner Starke (Product name Tigel, based on wheat) or from Ingrain SA (Pty) Ltd (Product name Stygel, based on corn). Sodium hydroxide was purchased from Carl Roth and urea was purchased from Yara.
[0364] Example 1 : Performance tests
[0365] Method of specimen preparation: Cylindrical samples: Samples were prepared with a diameter of 0.028 m and a height of 0.0174 m, using five compactions with a 360 g weight, falling from 0.4 m height. This was adjusted to compaction during Marshall tests.
[0366] Water exposure test setup: During the water exposure test, up to six specimens are placed into a plastic flow unit (37° angle with respect to the supporting table), where they are held by leaning against an edge. Water is pumped so it contacts each specimen with the same amount of water per time. The water flow rate is typically 1.5 l / min, which models approximately heavy rainfall (e.g. 14000 l / (m2h), with respect to the exposed sample surface). This test setup was adapted to the erosion resistance test apparatus described in South African Pavement Engineering Manual Chapter 3: Materials Testing (2ndedition, 2014, ISBN 978-1-920611-03-3) to suit multiple samples at the same time.
[0367] Water stability test setup: Test samples were added to 400 mL of water. The time until (complete) disintegration was recorded. Figure 1 shows a sample on the left which disintegrated directly upon contact with water (meaning it did not show any water resistance and / or did not show any water stability) and a sample on the right which did not disintegrate (meaning it showed water resistance and / or water stability). The time point of (complete) disintegration (disintegration time) corresponds to very little, preferably below 2 wt.-%, preferably below 1 wt.-%, preferably no, residual mass after wet sieve dipping processes, preferably in the modified slake test defined herein.
[0368] Water stability test 1 :
[0369] In the water stability test, the solidification performance of black liquor (supplier Ryan, solid content 46 wt.-%), M1 , and M17 (cf. Table 4) used in a bulk application rate of 3 g / kg (with reference to the solid content), respectively, was determined. The time until disintegration was measured in the water exposure test setup (cf. above). Time until disintegration was 30 min with black liquor, 400 min with M1 , and 480 min with M17. Comparable sodium lignosulfonate-treated species disintegrated during the first minute of exposure (after approximately 6 seconds). This indicates that mixtures with a O / l-ratio of higher than 10 (and / or a C / Na ratio of over 3.3) perform better than black liquor-based formulations when it comes to water-resistant solidification. The soil substrate used was a tailing soil of the soil category loam comprising 0.2 wt.-% Muscovite-2M1 , 68.0% quartz, 16.8% chlorite and 15.0% gypsum, analyzed by XRD using Rietveld method.
[0370] Mixtures M15, M16, and M17 also showed water resistance when using different lignin types, e.g. SWS or SWC or HWB lignin; so did mixtures M22, M23 and M24. Oxylignin showed also good water resistance when used as constituent (i) in M1 , M15, M16, M17, M22, M23 and M24.
[0371] In this experiment, a separate set of test samples was prepared, which was additionally treated with (a maintenance application of) calcium chloride (100 g / m2applied using 1 L / m2). This additional treatment increased the wet stability. The same was observed when magnesium chloride was used as a maintenance treatment. An even higher effect was observed when iron salts (e.g. iron (II) chloride, iron (III) chloride, ammonia iron (III) sulfate) and aluminium salts (aluminium potassium sulfate) were used for the additional treatment (the maintenance treatment). These tests were also done with mixtures comprising SWS and showed substantially higher effects.
[0372] Particularly, the water resistance was increased when mixtures M1 , M15, M16, M17, M22, M23, M24, M27, M28, M29, M33, M34, and M35 were treated with calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, iron (II) chloride, iron (III) chloride, ammonia iron (III) sulfate and / or aluminium potassium sulfate. These tests were also done with mixtures comprising SWS and showed substantially higher effects.
[0373] Water erosion test 1 :
[0374] Test samples were prepared as build-in test specimens with the following binders / mixtures: Water - negative control; anionic bitumen emulsion (5.7 kg / m3, based on bitumen and anionic stabilizer), and mixtures M15 (4 kg / m3), M16 (4 kg / m3), and M17 (3.7 kg / m3) (cf. Table 4). All samples were used in the water exposure test setup (cf. above). The weight retention after 5 min of water exposure is reported in Figure 2. The weight retention was determined by dividing the mass of the dried, water exposed specimen by the dry initial mass of the respective test specimen.
[0375] Water erosion test 2:
[0376] Test samples were prepared as build-in test specimens with bitumen emulsion (715 g / m2based on bitumen), M16 (420 g / m2), and M17 (396 g / m2) (cf. Figure 3). All samples were used in the water erosion test setup (cf. above). The weight retention after several time points (1 1 min, 21 min, 42 min) was determined by dividing the mass of the dried, water exposed specimen by the dry initial mass of the respective test specimen.
[0377] The soil material used was a substrate of the soil type loam, comprising 4.4 wt.-% birnesite, 27.2% quartz, 40.8% hematite and 27.5% goethite, analyzed by XRD using Rietveld Method. In this example, it is apparent that soil substrates solidified with mixtures according to the invention exhibit higher water resistance than bitumen-based formulations.
[0378] Water stability test 2:
[0379] Water stability tests: Test samples were prepared as build-in test specimens with the following binders / mixtures: Water - negative control; bitumen emulsion, and mixtures M1 , M4, and M5 (cf. Table 4). Bulk application rates were 4 kg / m3, respectively. The time point of disintegration (collapse of the specimen) was determined and is reported in Figure 4. Abrasion test:
[0380] Abrasion tests were done in round containers (diameter 2.8 cm; application method spray- on) and a surface application rate of 396 g / m2of M17 (cf. Table 4) was applied in two liters per m2v / 'athe spray-on method. An abrasion of a 6001 vehicle was mimicked for 5 minutes, using a miniaturized tire setup showing 5 fold (loamy sand) or 5.75 fold (loam) reduction in abrasion with respect to soil which was treated with water only (and was subsequently redried). This abrasion was comparable to the one on a substrate treated with a bitumen emulsion-based formulation at a surface application rate of 715 g / m2, demonstrating the higher dose efficiency of the mixtures according to the invention. This indicates that the mixtures according to the invention are more dose efficient binders than bitumen emulsionbased formulations.
[0381] Example 2: Preparation method
[0382] The order of addition of the constituents in the method for preparing a mixture according to the invention can be important for the outcome of the method. Kraft lignin from eucalyptus (i), sodium hydroxide (ii), and pregelatinized starch (iii) were used in this experiment.
[0383] The order of addition of the constituents of the mixture determined the performance of the mixture, e.g. instant gelling occurred when (ii) (NaOH of a 500 g / l solution) was added to (iii) (pregelatinized starch) alone. This gel was neither well soluble nor emulsifiable in water anymore. When kraft lignin (i) and pregelatinized starch (iii) were mixed and homogenized before the inorganic base (ii) was added, the resulting mixture was of very high quality, e.g. well water-dispersible. The success of the preparation of the mixture was even higher when the addition of constituent (ii) occurred under constant mixing.
[0384] The preparation of a solid mixture worked substantially better using HWE compared to using SWC.
[0385] Several spray-in tests were carried out and it was identified that preferably the base (constituent (ii)) is sprayed-in in a concentration of 600 g / l to 400 g / l, most preferably at 500 g / l, based on the total volume of the aqueous solution or suspension of constituent (ii).
[0386] Example 3: Bitumen emulsion-based mixtures
[0387] Based on the mixtures M1 , M16, and M17 (cf. Table 4), asphalt based on emulsified bitumen was produced. The dosage of the mixtures M1 , M16, and M17 was 0.25 wt.-%, based on the total asphalt, and the dose of the anionic bitumen emulsion was 6.25 wt.-%, based on the amount of bitumen dosed. The prepared asphalt specimens showed very good solidification properties and water stability.
[0388] Example 4: Further constituents
[0389] Further examples were prepared using the following components as constituent (iii) in an M1-based mixture (cf. Table 4): Maltodextrin, albumin, casein, functionalized cellulose (ethoxylated cellulose), functionalized starch (ethoxylated starch), lignosulfonate, soy flour, guar gum, gluten, chickpea flour.
[0390] As component (v), the following substances were used in an M1 -based mixture (cf. Table 4):
[0391] Inorganic adjuvants: Cement, calcium chloride, ammonium chloride, sodium sulfate, calcium formate, aluminium chloride, iron (II) chloride, iron (III) chloride, sodium chloride, magnesium chloride.
[0392] Organic adjuvants: Sugar cane molasse, sugar beet molasse, amino acids (alanin, asparagine, glutamine, glutamate, monosodium glutamate, glutamic acid, glycine, methionine.
[0393] It was confirmed that a water resistant layer was formed when the above mentioned mixtures were used.
[0394] Example 5: Swelling and Synergistic Mixtures
[0395] Mixtures M9, M10, M11 , M22, M23, and M24 were mixed with a carbonate based soil substrate (CBSS). This CBSS had a calcite content of 78 wt.-%, a dolomite content of 7 wt- %, a layer silicate content of 7 wt.-%, a potassium feldspar content of 3 wt.-%, and a quartz content of 5 wt.-%. The weight-based application rate of the mixtures (with respect to the soil substrate) was 4 kg / m3. The swell measure (according to SN EN 13286-47) of the mixture treated CBSS was reduced with respect to the CBSS alone (in absence of any binder). For example, M22 treated soil had a swell measure of -0.008 mm, whereas the untreated CBSS (without any binder) had a swell measure of 3.8 mm. The use in accordance with the invention resulted in a reduction of the swelling of the soil. The swelling during freeze-thaw cycles was reduced from 0.43 mm to -0.14.A synergistic effect was observed with mixture M2 when applied in 50 g / m2using the Spray-On Method on a fly ash material measured in the water exposure test setup. In this setup, the soil treated with M2 did not show any visible cracks after 12 h of treatment, whereas the soil treated with the respective single components of the mixture disintegrated after 45 seconds (HWE alone), 45 seconds (NaOH alone), 3 minutes (preg. starch alone) 45 seconds (water alone). Thus, the combined effect of M2 was significantly bigger than the sum of the effects caused by the single components of the mixture. Similar effects were also observed for M1 , M3, M22, M23 and M24. Black liquor (both based on lignin content applied as well as on total solids applied) did not show sufficient wet stability. The black liquor treated soil disintegrated after approx. 2 minutes.
[0396] Example 6: Specific Soil Substrates and Mixture of Water-Insoluble Lignins
[0397] Mixtures M9, M10, M11 , M22, M23, and M24 in a WBAR of 5.5 g / kg substrate were used. As soil substrate, quartz sand and a 95:5 (based on weight) mixture of quartz and bentonite was used. Water erosion tests were executed with a curing time of two days. For M22, the disintegration time of the M22 treated quartz was 10200 minutes, whereas the disintegration time of the M22 treated 95 / 5 quarts / bentonite mixture was 86400 minutes.
[0398] HWE and HWB were used for the following mixtures M9, M10, M11 , M22, M23, M24 in a weight ratio HWE to HWB of 50:50. It was shown that also water resistant layers are formed when two water-insoluble lignins were used for inventive mixtures. The mixture of HWB with SWC or HWE gave the best (most dose efficient) results.
[0399] Example 7: Soil Remediation
[0400] Analyses according to Table 11.1 .2-2, Technical Rules of LAGA “M 20” on Standard earth 0 - EEO were done with mixtures M9, M10 and M11 (WBAR = 2.5 g / kg). The detectable zinc was reduced by at least 60% (DIN EN ISO 17294-2 (E29) (01-2017)), detectable mercury was reduced at least by 15% (DIN EN ISO 12846 (E12) (08-2012)), detectable lead was reduced at least by 15% (DIN EN ISO 17294-2 (E29) (01-2017)), detectable arsenic was reduced at least by at least 75% (DIN EN ISO 17294-2 (E29) (01 -2017)). Without being bound by theory, it is assumed that the mixtures M9, M10 and M11 bind the ions and render them not detectable in the respective assay, thus acting as ion-binders, in particular heavy metal binders and / or as ion immobilizers, in particular heavy metal immobilizers. Example 8: Toxicity to Daphnia
[0401] Acute toxcitiy to lower aquatic organisms in accordance to OECD 202 was evaluated (using Daphnia) with M1 , M2, M3, M22, M23, and M24. The EC50(half maximal effective concentration) was higher than 1000 mg / l, the NOEC (No Observed Effect Concentration) was 1000 mg / l. Taking this value into account and in light of the following regulations CLP Regulation, ADR, AwSV, DIBt, AbwV, M1 , M2, M3, M22, M23, and M24 were categorized as “non-hazardous to the aquatic environment”.
[0402] Example 9: Solidification of Peat Soil and Pumice Soil
[0403] Peat soil (sieve passing 14 wt.-% 63 pm sieve) was used in a solidification test and showed in dosages of 400 g / m2, 500 g / m2and 600 g / m2(applied as Build-In samples using M22, M23, M24) substantially increased water resistance. The water treated sample washed away within seconds, whereas the M22, M23, and M24 treated samples showed structural integrity of over one hour in the slake test assay.
[0404] Pumice soil (23.5 wt.-% sieve passing 63 pm) was used in a solidification test and showed in dosages of 400 g / m2, 500 g / m2and 600 g / m2(applied as Build-In samples using M22, M23, M24) substantially increased water resistance. The water treated sample washed away within seconds, whereas the M22, M23, and M24 treated samples showed structural integrity of over one hour in the slake test assay.
[0405] M33, M34, and M35 treatment also resulted in water resistant peat and pumice substrates.
[0406] Example 10: Vicat-Slake Test
[0407] A modified slake test was used, wherein the respective sample was emerged into water and subsequently weighted with a Vicat device using a round tip (cone shaped test tip, diameter at the bottom, contacting the specimen = 1 .5 mm, height of the cone = 25 mm, diameter at the top = 7.5 mm). The total weight of the tip was 285 g. The test specimen was immersed in water (similar to the slake test described herein) and then the Vicat tip was placed on the specimen. The disassembly time is the time between the addition of the tip to the specimen surface and the time when the sample disassembled and the tip consequently reached the bottom of the test specimen. The test can be used to quantify the water resistance of different materials. This tests was used to verify the water resistance of the peat soil of example 9 treated with M22, M23, or M24. As the Vicat-Slake allows quantification of relative water resistance, mixtures M27, M28, M29, M30, M31 and M32 were applied in 400 g / m2, respectively, to loamy silt (phyllosilicates 16 wt.-%, oxides 7 wt.-%, quartz 9 wt.-%, tectosilicates without zeolitic h20 66 wt.-%, carbonates 1 wt.-%, sulfates 2 wt.-%, sieve passing < 63 pm: 37 wt.-%) and silty sand (quartz 3 wt.%, calcite 94 wt.-%, sieve passing < 63 pm: 49 wt.-%) soils and let to react for 24h before performing the Vicat-Slake test. The measurement values are shown in Figure 6 as an average of five independent test specimens. Control experiments of constituent (i) and the constituent (ii) alone of the mixtures did not show any water resistance, indicating synergistic technical performance of the mixtures M27, M28, M29, M30, M31 and M32. Similar results were obtained for mixtures M27, M28, M29, M30, M31 and M32 when the lignin source was HWE.
[0408] Example 11 :
[0409] The two soil substrates from Example 10 were also treated with the mixtures M33, M34, M35, M15, M16, and M17 (400 g / m2), respectively. The obtained hardened specimens showed water resistance, whereas the single constituents of the respective mixtures (in the same amount as present in the treatment with M33, M34, M35, M15, M16, and M17) did not confer any water resistance, indicating that the mixtures M33, M34, M35, M15, M16, and M17 act synergistically.
[0410] Table 4: Compositions of mixtures M1 to M35 based on the solid content of each constituent (m(g)) and the respective weight proportions of the constituents %). The sum gives the sum of all constituents of the respective mixtures. If multiple constituents are given, their relative (weight based) proportion is note brackets.
