Abstract

A method includes a wireless access network node (e.g., base station) transmitting, to a wireless terminal device (e.g., UE), a first indication to activate a high-order modulation scheme, and transmitting, to the wireless terminal device, a second indication to indicate a modulation and coding scheme (MCS) index. The MCS index, in coordination with an MCS table associated with the high-order modulation scheme, indicates the modulation order.

Description

HIGH-ORDER MODULATION SCHEMESTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] This disclosure generally relates to handling transmissions in a wireless cellular access network, and is specifically directed to mechanisms for indicating high-order modulation schemes.BACKGROUND

[0002] High-order modulation schemes are applied in wireless communication systems. For example, 4096QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) is applied in the latest IEEE 802.11be (i.e., WiFi) system. 4096QAM is an advanced modulation scheme that allows for transmitting a high amount of data per symbol, with each symbol representing 12 bits (since 2^12=4096) . In order to further increase the throughput of mobile communication system, 4096QAM is a promising technology for the next generation of mobile communication system (e.g., 6G) . While 4096QAM offers significant improvements in spectral efficiency, there are several restrictions and challenges to its application including, for example, high error vector magnitude (EVM) requirements, high device cost, and high power consumption, to name a few.SUMMARY

[0003] This disclosure generally relates to handling transmissions in a wireless cellular access network, and is specifically directed to mechanisms for indicating high-order modulation schemes. Compared with low-order modulation schemes (e.g., 16QAM and 64QAM) , high-order modulation schemes have higher requirements on the hardware and / or software for guaranteeing the Error Vector Magnitude (EVM) to demodulate the high-order modulation symbols. For example, high-order modulation schemes may require higher quantization bits, additional PA enhancements (e.g., AI / ML based PA enhancement) , more complicated channel estimation, and equalization algorithms, etc. However, these higher requirements on the hardware and / or software come with the cost of higher power consumption.

[0004] Currently, adaptive modulation and coding is applied. A base station can select the modulation order based on the channel and traffic situation. However, the issue is that the User Equipment (UE) does not know when the base station will schedule traffic using the high-order modulation scheme. As such, the UE has to always be ready to apply high-order modulation scheme, which means the UE needs to activate the hardware and / or software with higher requirements for the high-order modulation scheme all the time. This causes higher power consumption at the UE side.

[0005] In order to indicate to the UE when to activate the hardware and / or software with higher requirements for the high-order modulation scheme, an indication from the base station to the UE can be transmitted in accordance with various embodiments. After receiving the indication, the UE can activate the hardware and / or software with the higher requirements for the high-order modulation scheme. In the absence of receiving the indication, it is not necessary for the UE to activate the hardware and / or software with higher requirements for the high-order modulation scheme. As such, the UE can reduce power consumption and save power.

[0006] In some exemplary implementations, a method performed by the wireless access network node (WANN) (e.g., base station) includes transmitting, to a wireless terminal device (e.g., UE) , a first indication to activate a high-order modulation scheme, and transmitting, to the wireless terminal device, a second indication to indicate a Modulation and Coding Scheme (MCS) index. The MCS index, in coordination with an MCS table associated with the high-order modulation scheme, indicates the modulation order.

[0007] Similarly, a method performed by the wireless terminal device (e.g., UE) includes receiving, from the WANN, a first indication to activate a high-order modulation scheme, and receiving, from the WANN, a second indication to indicate a modulation and coding scheme (MCS) index. The method may include the wireless terminal device using the MCS index and an MCS table associated with the high-order modulation scheme to determine a modulation order..

[0008] In exemplary implementations, which may be combined with any of the other exemplary implementations disclosed herein, MCS indexes are mapped to modulation orders, wherein more MCS indexes are mapped to modulation order 6 than are mapped to the high-order modulation scheme, and / or wherein more MCS indexes are mapped to modulation order 8 than are mapped to the high-order modulation scheme. In other implementations, the MCS indexes are mapped to modulation orders, wherein a number of MCS indexes mapped to modulation order 2 is equal to a number of MCS indexes mapped to the high-order modulation schemes, and / or wherein a number of MCS indexes mapped to modulation order 4 is equal to the number of MCS indexes mapped to the high-order modulation schemes.

[0035] Returning to FIG. 1, the radio communication resources for the over-the-air interface 106 may include a combination of frequency, time, and / or spatial communication resources organized into various resource units or elements in frequency, time, and / or space. The radio communication resources 106 in frequency domain may include portions of licensed radio frequency bands, portions of unlicensed ration frequency bands, or portions of a mix of both licensed and unlicensed radio frequency bands. The radio communication resources 106 available for carrying the wireless communication signals between the base station 102 and user equipment 104 may be further divided into physical downlink channels 110 for transmitting wireless signals from the base station 102 to the user equipment 104 and physical uplink channels 120 for transmitting wireless signals from the user equipment 104 to the base station 102. The physical downlink channels 110 may further include physical downlink control channels (PDCCHs) 112 and physical downlink shared channels (PDSCHs) 114. Likewise, the physical uplink channels 120 may further include physical uplink control channels (PUCCHs) 122 and physical uplink shared channels (PUSCHs) 124. For simplification, other types of downlink and uplink channels are not shown in FIG. 1 but are within the scope of the current disclosure. The control channels PDCCHs 112 and PUCCHs 122 may be used for carrying control information in the form of control messages 116 and 126, herein referred to as Downlink Control Information (DCI) messages or Uplink Control Information (UCI) messages. The shared channels (shared between data and control information) PDSCHs 114 and PUSCHs 124 may be allocated and used for communicating downlink data transmissions 118 and uplink data transmissions 128 between the base station 102 and the user equipment 104.

[0036] The allocation and configuration of the radio communication resources associated with the data channels, such as the PDSCHs and the PUSCHs may be provided by one or more resource scheduling DCIs carried in the PDCCHs. The PDCCHs may be shared by a plurality of UEs in the access network. In various approaches, a particular UE may be configured to perform blind decode procedures on a preconfigured UE-specific Search Space (USS) to detect and identify a payload of a resource scheduling DCI carried in the PDCCH that specifically targets the particular UE. The blind decoding may be performed on preconfigured monitoring occasions of the PDCCH associated with USS. Such monitoring occasions may be referred to as a set of PDCCH candidates. Each PDCCH candidate may be associated with a set of Control Channel Elements (CCEs) . The UE may specifically use its Radio Network Temporary Identifier (RNTI) to decode the PDCCH candidates. The RNTI may be used to demask a PDCCH candidate’s CRC. If no CRC error is detected, the UE determines that PDCCH candidate carries its own control information. The UE may then process the DCI and extract the resource allocation information pertaining to the PDSCH and / or PUSCH for receiving and / or transmitting data.

[0037] Indicating High-Order Modulation Schemes

[0038] Activation and MCS Mapping

[0039] In various embodiments, the base station 102 may transmit an indication to the UE 104 in order to indicate to the UE 104 when to activate the hardware and / or software with higher requirements for the high-order modulation scheme. After receiving the indication, the UE 104 can activate the hardware and / or software with higher requirements for the high-order modulation scheme. For example, the base station 102 may send a first indication to the UE 104 to activate the high-order modulation scheme, and may send a second indication to indicate the Modulation and Coding Scheme (MCS) . The UE 104 may then determine the modulation order based on the MCS and an MCS table associated with the high-order modulation scheme. In various examples, the first indication can be carried by Radio Resource Control (RRC) signaling, Medium Access Control –Control Element (MAC-CE) , etc.

[0040] The design of the MCS table is a very complicated issue. It has to take many factors into account, including, for example, the required Signal to Interference Noise Ratio (SINR) (or Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) ) , a possibility of required SINR (or SNR) in practice, throughput requirement, expected spectral efficiency, granularity of expected spectral efficiency for different modulation order, and / or other factors. Thus, the MCS table is a balanced design. Furthermore, adaptive modulation and coding may be applied, i.e., the MCS is dynamically indicated via Downlink Control Information (DCI) to the UE 104. Considering the limited bits in DCI, normally 5 bits are applied to indicate the MCS. It is a challenge to introduce more bits in DCI to indicate MCS since it will increase the DCI overhead. Below are provided some design options that are suitable for the high-order modulation scheme.

[0041] To clarify, the modulation order 2 indicates that one modulation symbol represents 2 bits, e.g., QPSK; modulation order 4 indicates that one modulation symbol represents 4 bits, e.g., 16QAM; modulation order 6 indicates that one modulation symbol represents 6 bits, e.g., 64QAM; modulation order 8 indicates that one modulation symbol represents 8 bits, e.g., 256QAM; modulation order 10 indicates that one modulation symbol represents 10bits, e.g., 1024QAM; modulation order 11 indicates that one modulation symbol represents 11 bits, e.g., 2048QAM; modulation order 12 indicates that one modulation symbol represents 12 bits, e.g., 4096QAM. In various embodiments, the “high-order modulation scheme” may refer to modulation schemes with modulation order 11 or 12, e.g., 2048QAM or 4096QAM. It can also be applied to other modulation schemes that are higher than modulation order 11 or 12.

[0042] Provided are some general rules to design the MCS table. Typically, the possibility of extreme low SINR and high SINR are much lower than the possibility of moderate SINR. Thus, in various approaches, fewer MCS indexes may be allocated to modulation orders 2, 4, 10, and high-order modulation orders, while more MCS indexes can be allocated to the modulation orders 6 and 8. In various examples, more MCS indexes are mapped to modulation order 6 than MCS indexes that are mapped to high-order modulation orders, and more MCS indexes are mapped to modulation order 8 than MCS indexes that are mapped to the high-order modulation orders.

[0043] In various approaches, MCS indexes are mapped to different spectral efficiency. The larger the index, the higher the spectral efficiency. Although different numbers of MCS indexes can be allocated for the lower modulation order 2 (or 4) and the high-order modulation, aligned number of MCS indexes for the lower modulation order 2 (or 4) and the high-order modulation can help to design the simplified algorithm of adaptive modulation and coding, e.g., based on Gaussian distribution of SINR. Thus, in one implementation, the number of MCS indexes mapped to modulation order 2 is equal to the number of MCS indexes mapped to the high-order modulation orders. In one implementation, the number of MCS indexes mapped to modulation order 4 is equal to the number of MCS indexes mapped to the high-order modulation orders.

[0056] One example of an MCS table associated with 4096QAM is illustrated below in TABLE 1.

[0057] TABLE 1

[0058] As such, in accordance with various embodiments, a method performed by the wireless access network node (WANN) 102 (e.g., base station 102) includes transmitting, to a wireless terminal device 104 (e.g., UE 104) , a first indication to activate a high-order modulation scheme, and transmitting, to the wireless terminal device, a second indication to indicate a Modulation and Coding Scheme (MCS) index. The MCS index, in coordination with an MCS table associated with the high-order modulation scheme, indicates the modulation order.

[0059] Similarly, a method performed by the wireless terminal device 104 includes receiving, from the WANN 102, a first indication to activate a high-order modulation scheme, and receiving, from the WANN 102, a second indication to indicate a modulation and coding scheme (MCS) index. The method may include the wireless terminal device 104 using the MCS index and an MCS table associated with the high-order modulation scheme to determine a modulation order.

[0060] In accordance with various embodiments of the methods, MCS indexes are mapped to modulation orders, wherein more MCS indexes are mapped to modulation order 6 than are mapped to the high-order modulation scheme, and / or wherein more MCS indexes are mapped to modulation order 8 than are mapped to the high-order modulation scheme. In other examples of the methods, the MCS indexes are mapped to modulation orders, wherein a number of MCS indexes mapped to modulation order 2 is equal to a number of MCS indexes mapped to the high-order modulation schemes, and / or wherein a number of MCS indexes mapped to modulation order 4 is equal to the number of MCS indexes mapped to the high-order modulation schemes.

[0084] MCS indexes 18 and 19 may be mapped to modulation order 10; and

[0085] MCS index 22 may be mapped to modulation order M.

[0097] Scheduling Restrictions

[0098] As mentioned above, high-order modulation schemes have higher requirements on the hardware and / or software. If the UE 104 has to prepare its hardware resources for the high-order modulation scheme for all the potential time / frequency resources, the UE implementation cost will be greatly increased. Considering this, some scheduling restrictions can be applied in order to reduce the cost of applying high-order modulation scheme at the UE side.

[0099] If a high-order modulation scheme is indicated for a channel, in some examples, the frequency resources allocated for the channel may be less than or no larger than a certain threshold (e.g., frequency resource threshold) . The frequency resources may be in the units of resource block (RB) or Hz. The channel may be used for data transmission, e.g., PDSCH or PUSCH. For example, the threshold of frequency resource allocated for the channel can be 120 RBs or 100MHz. If the UE 104 has to equip hardware (e.g., memory or cache, etc. ) for all the frequency resources of a certain carrier without the limiting threshold, a high cost is expected. As an example, if 4096QAM is indicated for PDSCH, the frequency resources allocated for it may be no larger than 100MHz. In this case, the UE 104 only needs to equip hardware for up to 100MHz for 4096QAM in order to reduce cost. The threshold of frequency resource may be reported by the UE 104 or predefined in the specification.

[0100] If a high-order modulation scheme is indicated for a channel, in some examples, the time resources allocated for the channel may be less than or no larger than a certain threshold (e.g., a time resource threshold) . The time resources may be in the units of symbol, sub-slots, or slots. The channel may be used for data transmission, e.g., PDSCH or PUSCH. For example, the threshold of time resource in the units of symbols allocated for the channel can be 7 symbols. If the UE 104 has to equip hardware for all the time resources of a certain carrier without the limiting threshold, a high cost is expected. As an example, if 4096QAM is indicated for PDSCH, the time resources allocated for it may be no larger than 7 symbols. In this case, the UE 104 only needs to equip hardware for up to 7 symbols for 4096QAM in order to reduce cost. The threshold of time resource may be reported by the UE 104 or predefined in the specification.

[0101] If a high-order modulation scheme is indicated for a channel, in some examples, the Transport Block Size (TBS) of the transport block transmitted by the channel may be less than or no larger than a certain threshold (e.g., a TBS threshold) . For example, the threshold of TBS can be 2000. If the UE 104 has to equip hardware for the largest TBS without the limiting threshold, a high cost is expected. As an example, if 4096QAM is indicated for PDSCH, the TBS for the transport block transmitted or carried by it may be no larger than 2000. In this case, the UE 104 only needs to equip hardware for up to 2000 TBS for 4096QAM in order to reduce cost. The threshold of TBS may be reported by the UE 104 or predefined in the specification.

[0102] If a high-order modulation scheme is indicated for a channel, in some examples, the number of transport blocks transmitted by the channel may be less than or no larger than a certain threshold (e.g., a number of transport blocks threshold) . For example, the threshold of transport block can be 1. If the UE 104 has to equip hardware for the largest number of transport blocks (e.g., 2) without the limiting threshold, a high cost is expected. As an example, if 4096QAM is indicated for PDSCH, the number of transport block transmitted or carried by it may be no larger than 1. In this case, the UE 104 only needs to equip hardware for up to 1 TB for 4096QAM in order to reduce cost. The threshold of number of transport blocks may be reported by the UE 104 or predefined in the specification.

[0103] If a high-order modulation scheme is indicated for a channel, in some examples, the number of codewords transmitted by the channel may be less than or no larger than a certain threshold (e.g., a number of codewords threshold) . For example, the threshold of codewords can be 1. If the UE 104 has to equip hardware for the largest number of codewords (e.g., 2) without the limiting threshold, a high cost is expected. As an example, if 4096QAM is indicated for PDSCH, the number of codewords transmitted or carried by it is no larger than 1. In this case, the UE 104 only needs to equip hardware for up to 1 codeword for 4096QAM in order to reduce cost. The threshold of number of codewords may be reported by the UE 104 or predefined in the specification.

[0104] If a high-order modulation scheme is indicated for a channel, in some examples, the number of transmission layers of the channel may be less than or no larger than a certain threshold (e.g., a number of transmission layers threshold) . For example, the threshold of transmission layer may be 1. If the UE 104 has to equip hardware for the largest number of transmission layer (e.g., 8) without the limiting threshold, a high cost is expected. As an example, if 4096QAM is indicated for PDSCH, the number of transmission layers of it is no larger than 4. In this case, the UE 104 only needs to equip hardware for up to 4 transmission layers for 4096QAM in order to reduce cost. The threshold of number of transmission layers may be reported by the UE 104 or predefined in the specification.

[0105] If a high-order modulation scheme is indicated for a channel, in some examples, the number of frequency domain multiplexed (FDMed) transmissions of the channel in one carrier / BWP may be less than or no larger than a certain threshold (e.g., a number of FDMed transmissions threshold) . For example, the threshold of FDMed transmission of the channel may be 1. If the UE 104 has to equip hardware for the largest number of FDMed transmission (e.g., 4) without the limiting threshold, a high cost is expected. As an example, if 4096QAM is indicated for PDSCH, the number of FDMed transmission of it may be no larger than 1. In this case, the UE 104 only needs to equip hardware for up to 1 FDMed transmission for 4096QAM in order to reduce cost. The threshold of number of FDMed transmission may be reported by the UE 104 or predefined in the specification.

[0106] If a high-order modulation scheme is indicated for a channel, in some examples, the number of simultaneous transmissions of the channel across carriers / BWPs may be less than or no larger than a certain threshold (e.g., a number of simultaneous transmissions threshold) . For example, the threshold of simultaneous transmissions of the channel may be 2. If the UE 104 has to equip hardware for the largest number of simultaneous transmissions (e.g., 4) without the limiting threshold, a high cost is expected. As an example, if 4096QAM is indicated for PDSCH, the number of simultaneous transmissions of it may be no larger than 2. In this case, the UE 104 only needs to equip hardware for up to 2 simultaneous transmissions across carriers / BWPs for 4096QAM in order to reduce cost. The threshold of number of simultaneous transmissions may be reported by the UE 104 or predefined in the specification.

[0107] If a high-order modulation scheme is indicated for a channel, in some examples, the number of transmissions of the channel in one time unit may be less than or no larger than a certain threshold (e.g., a number of transmissions threshold) . The time unit can be sub-slots or slots. For example, the threshold of transmissions in one slot of the channel may be 2. If the UE 104 has to equip hardware for the largest number of transmissions (e.g., 4) in one time unit without the limiting threshold, a high cost is expected. As an example, if 4096QAM is indicated for PDSCH, the number of transmissions of it in one slot may be no larger than 2. In this case, the UE 104 only needs to equip hardware for up to 2 transmissions in one slot for 4096QAM in order to reduce cost. The threshold of number of transmissions in one time unit may be reported by the UE 104 or predefined in the specification.

[0108] If a high-order modulation scheme is indicated for a channel, in some examples, the subcarrier spacing of the channel may be less than or no larger than a certain threshold (e.g., a subcarrier spacing threshold) . Alternatively, if a high-order modulation scheme is indicated for a channel, in some embodiments, the numerology of subcarrier spacing of the channel may be less than or no larger than a certain threshold (e.g., a numerology threshold) . For example, the threshold of subcarrier spacing of the channel may be 60KHz. It requires higher implementation to implement high-order modulation scheme for large subcarrier spacing, e.g., in terms how to address the impact of phase noise. Because, typically larger subcarrier spacing is typically used in higher frequency, which comes with larger phase noise. However, a high-order modulation scheme is sensitive to the phase noise. As an example, if 4096QAM is indicated for PDSCH, the subcarrier spacing of it may be no larger than 60KHz. The threshold of subcarrier spacing may be reported by the UE 104 or predefined in the specification.

[0109] From the interference perspective, the high-order modulation scheme may be applied in larger subcarrier spacing instead of smaller subcarrier spacing. For example, in some cases, there may be larger interference between cells in lower frequency due to larger coverage of these cells. Smaller subcarrier spacing may be applied for lower frequency. Thus, in these scenarios, larger subcarrier spacing is more suitable for the high-order modulation schemes. If a high-order modulation scheme is indicated for a channel, in some examples, the subcarrier spacing of the channel may be larger than or no smaller than a certain threshold (e.g., a subcarrier spacing threshold) . Alternatively, if a high-order modulation scheme is indicated for a channel, in some examples, the numerology of subcarrier spacing of the channel may be larger than or no smaller than a certain threshold (e.g., a numerology threshold) . For example, the threshold of subcarrier spacing of the channel may be 60KHz. As an example, if 4096QAM is indicated for PDSCH, the subcarrier spacing of it may be no smaller than 60KHz. The threshold of subcarrier spacing may be reported by the UE 104 or predefined in the specification.

[0110] If a high-order modulation scheme is indicated for a channel, in some examples, the transform precoder is enabled for the channel. In other words, Discrete Fourier Transform Spread Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (DFT-S-OFDM) instead of Cyclic Prefix-Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (CP-OFDM) may be applied for the channel. The DFT-S-OFDM incurs smaller Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR) , which may be easier to demodulate the signal of high-order modulation scheme. Alternatively, advanced Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output (MIMO) technologies are more suitable for CP-OFDM, which can increase the SINR of the signal. In this sense, the base station 102 may also restrict the high-order modulation scheme to CP-OFDM instead of DFT-S-OFDM. In other words, if a high-order modulation scheme is indicated for a channel, the transform precoder may be disabled for the channel. Restricting the high-order modulation scheme to one of the two OFDM waveforms can help to reduce the implementation complexity and in return reduce the cost.

[0111] The Multi User MIMO (MU-MIMO) causes interferences between UEs. In order to guarantee the EVM of the high-order modulation, the MU-MIMO may not be allowed to be simultaneously applied with the high-order modulation. In one implementation, if a high-order modulation scheme is indicated for a channel, the co-scheduled UE is disabled for the channel. In one implementation, if a high-order modulation scheme is indicated for a channel, the DeModulation Reference Signal (DM-RS) ports of the channel are within the same DM-RS Code Domain Multiplexing (CDM) group. In one implementation, if a high-order modulation scheme is indicated for a channel, the indexes of DM-RS ports of the channel are consecutive. If the DM-RS ports of the channel are within the same DM-RS CDM group or indexes of DM-RS ports are consecutive, it may indicate that UE 104 applies Single User MIMO (SU-MIMO) instead of MU-MIMO.

[0112] In order to allow different UE implementation capabilities, two different UE processing capabilities can be reported by the UE 104, i.e., UE processing capability 1 and UE processing capability 2. UE processing capability 2 has more stringent requirements compared with UE processing capability 1. Because high-order modulation requires higher processing time, it can also be applied to UE processing capability 1. In one implementation, if a high-order modulation scheme is indicated for a channel, UE processing capability 1 processing time is applied. In one implementation, for UE processing capability 2, if a high-order modulation scheme is indicated for a channel, the UE 104 defaults to capability 1 processing time.

[0113] There are two different PDSCH mapping types, i.e., PDSCH mapping type A and PDSCH mapping type B. With PDSCH mapping type A, the first DM-RS is not required to be located at the first symbol of the scheduled PDSCH; while for PDSCH mapping type B, the first DM-RS is required to be located at the first symbol of the PDSCH. A similar mechanism is defined for PUSCH as well. In order to facilitate the modulation of the high-order modulation scheme, only PDSCH mapping type B is allowed for PDSCH applying high-order modulation scheme. If a high-order modulation scheme is indicated for a PDSCH, PDSCH mapping type B may be applied for the PDSCH. If a high-order modulation scheme is indicated for a PUSCH, PDSCH mapping type B may be applied for the PUSCH.

[0114] In accordance with various embodiments of the methods, the high-order modulation scheme is activated for a channel, and the frequency resources allocated for the channel are less than or equal to a frequency resource threshold. In other embodiments of the methods, the high-order modulation scheme is activated for a channel, and at least one of the following exists: the time resources allocated for the channel are less than or equal to a time resource threshold; a Transport Block Size (TBS) of a transport block transmitted in the channel is less than or equal to a TBS threshold; a number of transport blocks transmitted in the channel is less than or equal to a number of transport blocks threshold; a number of codewords transmitted in the channel is less than or equal to a number of codewords threshold; a number of transmission layers of the channel is less than or equal to a number of transmission layers threshold; a number of frequency domain multiplexed (FDMed) transmissions of the channel in the cell, carrier, or a bandwidth part (BWP) is less than or equal to a number of FDMed transmissions threshold; a number of simultaneous transmissions of the channel across cells, carriers, or BWPs is less than or equal to a number of simultaneous transmissions threshold; a number of transmissions of the channel in one time unit is less than or equal to a number of transmissions threshold; a subcarrier spacing of the channel is less than or equal to a subcarrier spacing threshold; a numerology of subcarrier spacing of the channel is less than or equal to a numerology threshold; the subcarrier spacing of the channel is larger than or equal to the subcarrier spacing threshold; the numerology of subcarrier spacing of the channel is larger than or equal to the numerology threshold; a transform precoder is enabled for the channel; the transform precoder is disabled for the channel; a co-scheduled wireless terminal device is disabled for the channel; DeModulation Reference Signal (DM-RS) ports of the channel are within a same DM-RS Code Domain Multiplexing (CDM) group; indexes of the DM-RS ports of the channel are consecutive; UE processing capability 1 processing time is applied; or the wireless terminal device defaults to capability 1 processing time for UE processing capability 2. In the same or other embodiments of the methods, the high-order modulation scheme is indicated for a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) , and PDSCH mapping type B is applied for the PDSCH, or the high-order modulation scheme is indicated for a physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) , and PDSCH mapping type B is applied for the PUSCH.

[0115] Joint indication of MCS and demodulation information

[0116] Since high-order modulation has higher EVM requirements, the reference signal configuration (e.g., DM-RS configuration) for the channel with high-order modulation may be also be different, e.g., with higher density. Similarly, the configuration for the channel itself may also be different, e.g., with different hopping configuration.

[0117] Since reference signal for the lower-order modulation scheme can share the same configuration, only separate configuration for high-order modulation scheme is required. If we introduce a separate indication for the reference signal configuration for high-order modulation scheme, indication overhead is increased. Thus, if a high-order modulation scheme is indicated for a channel via an indication, the demodulation information for the channel may also be indicated by the same indication, where the demodulation information comprises the reference signal information. With this, there is no need to have a separate indication for the reference signal information, thus indication overhead can be reduced. Similar benefits can be observed when the demodulation information comprises other dedicated configuration for the high-order modulation scheme.

[0118] In one implementation, the demodulation information comprises frequency-domain density of the reference signal for the channel. Since the high-order modulation scheme has higher EVM requirements, it has to estimate the noise and interference of the channel with higher accuracy, thus higher density of the reference signal is required.

[0119] In one implementation, the demodulation information comprises time-domain density of the reference signal for the channel. Since the high-order modulation scheme has higher EVM requirements, it has to estimate the noise and interference of the channel with higher accuracy, thus higher density of the reference signal is required.

[0120] In one implementation, the demodulation information comprises time location of the reference signal for the channel. Since the high-order modulation scheme has higher EVM requirements, it has to estimate the noise and interference of the channel with higher accuracy, thus the reference signal may need to be located in the symbols with higher noise or interference in order to accurately estimate the stronger noise and interference.

[0121] In one implementation, the demodulation information comprises power, power ratio, or power offset of the reference signal for the channel. Since the high-order modulation scheme has higher EVM requirements, higher power is required for the reference signal in order to beat the noise and interference. The demodulation information may comprise the power directly, e.g., 23dBm for the reference signal. Alternatively, the demodulation information may comprise the power offset relative to the channel, e.g., 3dB. Alternatively, the demodulation information may comprise the power ratio for the reference signal of the channel, e.g., 0.9 or 1.1.

[0122] In one implementation, the demodulation information comprises frequency hopping enabling or frequency hopping offset for the channel. Frequency hopping can increase frequency diversity and in return help to demodulate the high-order modulation symbols.

[0123] In another implementation, the base station 102 indicates two sets of configurations, where the first set of configuration is for the modulation order other than the high-order modulation, i.e., modulation order that is lower than the high-order modulation. Another set of configuration is for the high-order modulation. Each set of the configuration may comprise frequency-domain density of the reference signal, time-domain density of the reference signal, time location of the reference signal, power (or power ratio or power offset) of the reference signal, or frequency hopping enabling (or frequency hopping offset) of the channel.

[0124] In accordance with various embodiments of the methods, the high-order modulation scheme is indicated for a channel via the first indication, and demodulation information for the channel is also indicated by the same first indication, where the demodulation information comprises at least one of the following: frequency-domain density of the reference signal for the channel; time-domain density of the reference signal for the channel; time location of a reference signal for the channel; power, power ratio, or power offset of the reference signal for the channel; or frequency hopping enabling or frequency hopping offset for the channel.

[0125] AI-Based Constellation Design

[0126] FIG. 3 illustrates an example of a typical 4096QAM constellation, where the constellations are axisymmetric. As long as the constellations are determined in one quadrant, the constellations can be derived in the other three quadrants.

[0127] However, with the development of the AI / ML technology, we can use AI / ML to tailor the constellations considering the specific environment, channel status and configurations. In the end, the constellations may not be highly symmetric. In order to allow the UE 104 to successfully demodulate the channel, the UE 104 and the base station 102 have to align their understanding on the constellations generated by AI / ML. If the constellations are fully asymmetric, the indication overhead for all the constellations are high. In order to reduce the indication overhead of the constellations, a symmetry factor can be indicated from the base station 102 to the UE 104 to help the UE 104 determine the constellations.

[0128] The base station 102 indicates the symmetry factor to the UE 104 and indicates a subset of the constellations to the UE 104. The UE 104 determines the whole set of constellations based on the symmetry factor and the subset of the constellations. The symmetry factors may be represented by different numbers or different levels. The symmetry factor may also indicate different phase offsets or rotation angles.

[0129] Assuming the modulation order is M, the whole set of the constellations comprise 2M constellations. For example, for the modulation order 11, there are 2048 constellations, and for the modulation order 12, there are 4096 constellations.

[0130] If the symmetry factor indicates the first value, the base station 102 indicates the one quarter of the whole set of constellations to the UE 104. The UE 104 determines the whole set of constellations based on the symmetry factor and the indicated constellations. Similarly, if the symmetry factor indicates rotation angle as 90 degrees (or π / 4) , then the UE 104 can rotate the constellations indicated by the base station via 90 degrees, 180 degrees, and 270 degrees to derive the whole set of the constellations.

[0131] Take 4096QAM as an example, base station indicates the symmetry factor as 1 and indicates the 1024 constellations in the first quadrant to the UE 104. Assuming one constellation in the first quadrant is x+yj, where j is the imaginary unit, then the corresponding constellation in the second quadrant, third quadrant and fourth quadrant is -x+yj, -x-yj and x-yj, respectively.

[0132] If the symmetry factor indicates the second value, the base station 102 indicates the one sixteenth of the whole set of constellations to the UE 104. The UE 104 determines the whole set of constellations based on the symmetry factor and the indicated constellations. Similarly, if the symmetry factor indicates rotation angle as 22.5 degrees (or π / 16) , then the UE 104 can rotate the constellations indicated by the base station via 22.5 degrees, 45 degrees, 67.5 degrees, …, and 337.5 degrees to derive the whole set of the constellations.

[0133] Take 4096QAM as an example. The base station 102 indicates the symmetry factor as 2 and indicates the 256 constellations in the top right corner of the first quadrant to the UE 104. FIG. 4 shows an example method to derive the constellations. The base station 102 indicates the constellations in the top right corner of the first quadrant to the UE 104. In the first step, the UE 104 derives the constellations in the top left corner of the first quadrant; in the second step, the UE 104 derives the constellations in the lower left corner of the first quadrant; in the third step, the UE 104 derives the constellations in the lower right corner of the first quadrant; in the fourth step, the UE 104 derives the constellations in the second quadrant; in the fifth step, the UE 104 derives the constellations in the third quadrant; in the sixth step, the UE 104 derives the constellations in the fourth quadrant. Assuming one constellation in the in the top right corner of the first quadrant is x+yj, where j is the imaginary unit. The symmetrical point in the first quadrant is a+bj. Then the corresponding constellation in the top left corner is 2a-x+yj; the corresponding constellation in the lower left corner is 2a-x+ (2b-y) j; the corresponding constellation in the lower right corner is x+ (2b-y) j. The four corresponding constellations in the second quadrant are -x+yj, -2a+x+yj, -2a+x+ (2b-y) j and -x+ (2b-y) j, respectively. The four corresponding constellations in the third quadrant are -x-yj, -2a+x-yj, -2a+x+ (-2b+y) j and -x+ (-2b+y) j, respectively. The four corresponding constellations in the fourth quadrant are x-yj, 2a-x-yj, 2a-x+ (-2b+y) j and x+ (-2b+y) j, respectively.

[0134] The symmetrical point can be indicated by the base station or predefined in the specification.

[0135] With this, AI / ML technology can generate the tailored constellations and keep the overhead of constellation indication under control.

[0136] If the symmetry factor indicates the third value, the base station 102 may indicate the one-sixth-fourth of the whole set of constellations to the UE 104. The UE 104 may determine the whole set of constellations based on the symmetry factor and the indicated constellations. Similarly, if the symmetry factor indicates rotation angle as 5.625 degrees (or π / 64) , then the UE 104 can rotate the constellations indicated by the base station 102 via 5.625 degrees, 11.25 degrees, 16.875 degrees, …, and 354.375 degrees to derive the whole set of the constellations.

[0137] If the symmetry factor indicates the fourth value, the base station 102 may indicate the one in two hundred and fifty-six of the whole set of constellations to the UE 104. The UE 104 may determine the whole set of constellations based on the symmetry factor and the indicated constellations. Similar mechanism can be applied when the symmetry factor indicates rotation angle.

[0138] In another implementation, the base station 102 indicates a subset of the constellations of one modulation order to the UE 104. In this implementation, the base station 102 doesn’ t need to indicate the symmetry factor to the UE 104. The UE 104 determines the whole set of constellations of the modulation order based on the subset of the constellations and the number of constellations in the subset. There are different solutions to determine the whole set of the constellations, e.g., based on the symmetry factor what we mentioned in the above paragraphs. The specific solution to derive the whole set of constellations are predefined in the specification. Although the symmetry factor is not directly indicated to the UE 104, the UE 104 determines it based on the number of the subset of constellations indicated by the base station 102 and the number of the whole set of the constellations. Take 4096QAM as an example, if the base station indicates 256 constellations to the UE 104. The UE 104 may determine the symmetry factor as 2, e.g., second value or 22.5 degrees.

[0139] In another implementation, the base station 102 may indicate the amplitude factor to the UE 104 and indicates a subset of the constellations to the UE 104. The UE 104 may determine the whole set of constellations based on the amplitude factor and the indicated constellations. Basically, the UE 104 scales the constellations with the amplitude factors.

[0140] Although this symmetry factor based indication method is efficient for the high-order modulation, it can also be applied for other lower-order modulation schemes, e.g., 256QAM and 1024QAM.

[0141] In accordance with various embodiments of the methods, the methods may include the WANN 102 indicating, and the wireless terminal device 104 receiving the indication of, a subset of constellations. A whole set of constellations can be determined (e.g., by the wireless terminal device 104) based on a symmetry factor and the subset of the constellations.

[0142] The methods may also include the WANN 102 indicating, and the wireless terminal device 104 receiving an indication of, a symmetry factor; and one of the following: in response to the symmetry factor indicating a first value, the WANN 102 indicating, and the wireless terminal device 104 receiving an indication of, one quarter of the whole set of constellations; in response to the symmetry factor indicating a second value, the WANN 102 indicating, and the wireless terminal device 104 receiving an indication of, one sixteenth of the whole set of constellations; in response to the symmetry factor indicating a third value, the WANN 102 indicating, and the wireless terminal device 104 receiving an indication of, one sixty-fourth of the whole set of constellations; or in response to the symmetry factor indicating a fourth value, the WANN 102 indicating, and the wireless terminal device 104 receiving an indication of, one two-hundred-and-fifty-sixth of the whole set of constellations, wherein the wireless terminal device 104 determines the whole set of constellations based on the symmetry factor and the indicated constellations.

[0143] The methods may also include the WANN 102 indicating, and the wireless terminal device 104 receiving an indication of, a subset of the constellations of one modulation order, wherein the whole set of constellations of the modulation order can be determined (e.g., by the wireless terminal device 104) based on the subset of the constellations and a number of constellations in the subset.

[0144] The methods may also include the WANN 102 indicating, and the wireless terminal device 104 receiving an indication of an amplitude factor, wherein the whole set of constellations can be determined (e.g., by tbe wireless terminal device 104) based on the amplitude factor and the indicated subset of constellations.

[0145] As another embodiment, measuring the power consumption of AI models in an integrated system can be challenging, as it's often not straightforward to isolate the power consumption of AI from the rest of the system. In such cases, simplifying assumptions or using proxies for power consumption can make the metrics more measurable.

[0146] Measurable Proxy: Model complexity can be quantified using various metric, including:

[0147] Number of Parameters: Total number of weights in the AI model.

[0148] Floating Point Operations (FLOPs) : The number of operations required per inference, which directly correlates with computational cost.

[0149] Latency per Inference: The time it takes to complete a single inference. This can be indirectly related to power consumption because more complex models tend to have higher inference latency.

[0150] In various approaches, FLOP may be the most straightforward proxy for power consumption of an AI model.

[0151] In various approaches, the UE 104 may measure the power consumption of model at the UE side via FLOPs. The power consumption for one AI model during one certain time duration T can be measured by the total FLOPs of the AI model during this time duration T, including both model training and inference.

[0152] is the total FLOPs of the model during time duration T, including both model training and inference;

[0153] is the total FLOPs of the model training during time duration T;

[0154] is the total FLOPs of the model inference during time duration T;

[0155] KT is the number of model training instances during time duration T;

[0156] is the scaling ratio to adjust the FLOPs of each processing of batch including both forward and backward propagation, typically

[0157] NEPOCH is the number of EPOCHs for one model training;

[0158] DDataset is the number of samples in the dataset for model training;

[0159] FFLOP is the FLOPs for one model inference;

[0160] IT is the number of inferences during time duration T.

[0161] In one embodiment, Complexity-Performance Ratio (CPR) can be defined as following

[0162] The description and accompanying drawings above provide specific example embodiments and implementations. The described subject matter may, however, be embodied in a variety of different forms and, therefore, covered or claimed subject matter is intended to be construed as not being limited to any example embodiments set forth herein. A reasonably broad scope for claimed or covered subject matter is intended. Among other things, for example, subject matter may be embodied as methods, devices, components, systems, or non-transitory computer-readable media for storing computer codes. Accordingly, embodiments may, for example, take the form of hardware, software, firmware, storage media or any combination thereof. For example, the method embodiments described above may be implemented by components, devices, or systems including memory and processors by executing computer codes stored in the memory.

[0163] Throughout the specification and claims, terms may have nuanced meanings suggested or implied in context beyond an explicitly stated meaning. Likewise, the phrase “in one embodiment / implementation / example / approach” as used herein does not necessarily refer to the same embodiment and the phrase “in another embodiment / implementation / example / approach” as used herein does not necessarily refer to a different embodiment. It is intended, for example, that claimed subject matter includes combinations of example embodiments in whole or in part.

[0164] In general, terminology may be understood at least in part from usage in context. For example, terms, such as “and” , “or” , or “and / or, ” as used herein may include a variety of meanings that may depend at least in part on the context in which such terms are used. Typically, “or” if used to associate a list, such as A, B or C, is intended to mean A, B, and C, here used in the inclusive sense, as well as A, B or C, here used in the exclusive sense. In addition, the term “one or more” as used herein, depending at least in part upon context, may be used to describe any feature, structure, or characteristic in a singular sense or may be used to describe combinations of features, structures or characteristics in a plural sense. Similarly, terms, such as “a, ” “an, ” or “the, ” may be understood to convey a singular usage or to convey a plural usage, depending at least in part upon context. In addition, the term “based on” may be understood as not necessarily intended to convey an exclusive set of factors and may, instead, allow for existence of additional factors not necessarily expressly described, again, depending at least in part on context.

[0165] Reference throughout this specification to features, advantages, or similar language does not imply that all of the features and advantages that may be realized with the present solution should be or are included in any single implementation thereof. Rather, language referring to the features and advantages is understood to mean that a specific feature, advantage, or characteristic described in connection with an embodiment is included in at least one embodiment of the present solution. Thus, discussions of the features and advantages, and similar language, throughout the specification may, but do not necessarily, refer to the same embodiment.

[0166] Furthermore, the described features, advantages and characteristics of the present solution may be combined in any suitable manner in one or more embodiments. One of ordinary skill in the relevant art will recognize, in light of the description herein, that the present solution can be practiced without one or more of the specific features or advantages of a particular embodiment. In other instances, additional features and advantages may be recognized in certain embodiments that may not be present in all embodiments of the present solution.
