AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Medical washer-disinfectors consume a significant amount of energy for heating water, contributing to high operational costs and environmental impact, and there is a risk of clogging and thermal stress in plate heat exchangers due to alternating hot and cold water flows.

Method used

A method and apparatus that control the flow of water through a plate heat exchanger by bypassing cold water with residues and using hot water from a later processing phase to heat fresh water, reducing energy consumption and minimizing clogging risks.

🎯Benefits of technology

Efficient recovery of energy from hot processing water for heating fresh water, reducing energy consumption and lowering the risk of plate heat exchanger clogging and thermal stress, while maintaining effective disinfection and cleaning processes.

Abstract

A method of operating a medical washer-disinfector is presented. At least one medical article received in a chamber is subjected to a first water processing phase. Water from this phase is passed to drain without passing through a plate heat exchanger. At a later point in time, the medical article is subjected to a second water processing phase, wherein the temperature of the water is now higher than the temperature of the water used in the first water processing phase. This high temperature water is passed through the plate heat exchanger and then to the drain, and fresh water is simultaneously passed through the plate heat exchanger to a fresh water storage tank, causing the fresh water to become heated as it passes through the plate heat exchanger. A medical washer-disinfector is also presented herein.
