AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

The incompatibility between the operating system's virtual memory management policy and the physical address-based operation of Processing-In-Memory (PIM) devices hinders effective utilization of PIM computation acceleration due to differing memory allocation methods.

Method used

A PIM device designed to perform operations on a page-by-page basis, allowing direct application of the virtual memory management policy by incorporating a control logic and address decoder to manage memory commands and operations based on operating system page sizes, with operation commands added to unused reserved address spaces.

🎯Benefits of technology

Enables seamless integration of PIM computation acceleration with existing programs by applying the virtual memory management policy, minimizing system compatibility issues and requiring minimal modifications.

Abstract

Provided is a processing-in-memory (PIM) device that performs in-memory operations on a page basis. A PIM device according to an embodiment of the present invention comprises: a bank group including banks configured to store data; at least one operation unit configured to perform an operation on the data stored in the banks; and an operation command decoder configured to control the at least one operation unit according to an operation command added to address information of the data, wherein a storage space of the bank group has the same size as a page used in an operating system. Accordingly, by performing in-memory operations in units of pages in the PIM device, a virtual memory management policy of the operating system can be directly applied to / utilized in the PIM device.
