Abstract
Description
[0001] CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS
[0002] This patent application claims priority to U.S. non-provisional patent application No. 16 / 593,453, filed on October 4, 2019, entitled “NEAR FIELD USER DETECTION USING A RADAR SIGNAL ANALYSIS ASSOCIATED WITH AUSER EQUIPMENT,” which is assigned to the assignee of the present application and is hereby expressly incorporated herein by reference. Technical Field
[0003] Aspects of the present disclosure relate generally to user detection, and to near-field user detection using analysis of radar signals associated with user devices. Background Art
[0004] Wireless networks can take advantage of high frequencies and small wavelengths to provide high data rates. Specifically, devices with fifth generation (5G) capabilities use frequencies at or near the extremely high frequency (EHF) spectrum, at or near the wavelengths of millimeters to communicate. Although higher frequency signals provide greater bandwidth to efficiently communicate large amounts of data, these signals suffer from higher path losses (e.g., path attenuation). To compensate for the higher path losses, the transmit power level can be increased, or beamforming can focus the energy in a specific direction.
[0005] Therefore, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has established maximum permissible exposure (MPE) limits. To meet the target guidelines, the device is responsible for balancing performance with transmit power and other constraints. Achieving this balancing act can be challenging, especially for devices with cost, size and other considerations. Summary of the invention
[0006] In some aspects, a method may include: receiving, by a user equipment (UE), a measurement sliding window associated with a radar signal transmitted by the UE; determining, by the UE, that the user is within a threshold distance of the UE, wherein the threshold distance is determined to be a first distance when an energy measurement associated with the radar signal indicates an energy drop that satisfies a threshold energy drop, or wherein the threshold distance is determined to be a second distance when the measurement sliding window indicates an energy change that satisfies a threshold energy change associated with the radar signal; and performing, by the UE and based at least in part on determining that the user is within the threshold distance, an action associated with a communication signal of the UE.
[0007] In some aspects, a UE for wireless communication may include a memory and one or more processors coupled to the memory. The memory and the one or more processors may be configured to: receive a measurement sliding window associated with a radar signal transmitted by the UE; determine that a user is within a threshold distance of the UE, wherein the threshold distance is determined to be a first distance when an energy measurement associated with the radar signal indicates that an energy drop satisfies a threshold energy drop, or wherein the threshold distance is determined to be a second distance when the measurement sliding window indicates that an energy change amount satisfies a threshold energy change amount associated with the radar signal; and perform an action associated with a communication signal of the UE based at least in part on determining that the user is within the threshold distance.
[0008] In some aspects, a non-transitory computer-readable medium may store one or more instructions for wireless communication. The one or more instructions, when executed by one or more processors of a UE, may cause the one or more processors to perform the following operations: receiving a measurement sliding window associated with a radar signal sent by the UE; determining that a user is within a threshold distance of the UE, wherein the threshold distance is determined to be a first distance when an energy measurement associated with the radar signal indicates that an energy drop satisfies a threshold energy drop, or wherein the threshold distance is determined to be a second distance when the measurement sliding window indicates that an energy change amount satisfies a threshold energy change amount associated with the radar signal; and performing an action associated with a communication signal of the UE based at least in part on determining that the user is within the threshold distance.
[0009] In some aspects, an apparatus for wireless communication may include: a component for receiving a measurement sliding window associated with a radar signal transmitted by a UE; a component for determining that a user is within a threshold distance of the UE, wherein the threshold distance is determined to be a first distance when an energy measurement associated with the radar signal indicates an energy drop that satisfies a threshold energy drop, or wherein the threshold distance is determined to be a second distance when the measurement sliding window indicates an energy change that satisfies a threshold energy change associated with the radar signal; and a component for performing an action associated with the communication signal of the UE based at least in part on determining that the user is within the threshold distance.
[0010] Aspects generally include methods, apparatus, systems, computer program products, non-transitory computer-readable media, user equipment, wireless communication devices, and / or processing systems substantially as described with reference to and as illustrated by the accompanying drawings and description.

[0017] The various aspects of the present disclosure are described more fully hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings. However, the present disclosure can be embodied in many different forms and should not be construed as being limited to any specific structure or function provided throughout the present disclosure. On the contrary, these aspects are provided so that the present disclosure will be thorough and complete, and the scope of the present disclosure will be fully conveyed to those skilled in the art. Based at least in part on the teachings of this article, those skilled in the art should be aware that the scope of the present disclosure is intended to cover any aspect of the present disclosure disclosed herein, whether the aspect is implemented independently or in combination with any other aspect of the present disclosure. For example, any number of aspects set forth herein can be used to implement a device or practice a method. In addition, the scope of the present disclosure is intended to cover a device or method that uses other structures, functions, or structures and functions different from the various aspects of the present disclosure set forth herein or from the various aspects of the present disclosure set forth herein to practice. It should be understood that any aspect of the present disclosure disclosed herein can be embodied by one or more elements of the claims.
[0018] User equipment (UE) may use high transmit power to compensate for path loss associated with millimeter wave (mmW) signals. A UE (or any other type of electronic device) may be physically operated by a user. This physical proximity presents an opportunity for radiation exposure to the user to exceed given guidelines, such as the maximum permissible exposure (MPE) level determined by a telecommunications standards organization (e.g., the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP)) and / or a communications regulator (e.g., the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)). Due to these issues, it is advantageous to enable the UE to detect the proximity of the user.
[0019] The MPE level may be different based at least in part on the proximity of the user to the UE. For example, the MPE level for a user in the near field of the UE may be lower (e.g., about 10 dBm or less) than the MPE level for a user in the far field of the UE (e.g., about 10 decibel milliwatts (dBm) to 35 dBm). As used herein, the near field (or near field range) of the UE may be within 4 centimeters (cm) of the user (or a range of 0 cm to 4 cm), and the far field (or far field range) of the UE may be greater than 4 cm. The far field may correspond to a range from 4 cm to a threshold distance (e.g., 15 cm), which is considered for the MPE level of the UE regarding the user's presence (e.g., a maximum distance within which the user's presence needs to be monitored according to 3GPP and / or FCC).
[0020] Some previous proximity detection techniques may use dedicated sensors to detect users within the near field and / or far field of the UE, such as cameras, infrared sensors, or radar sensors. However, these sensors are bulky, expensive (e.g., in terms of financial cost and space within the UE), and require relatively complex and computationally intensive processing techniques. In addition, a single UE may include multiple antennas located on different surfaces of the UE (e.g., on the top, bottom, or sides). In order to account for each of these antennas, multiple cameras or sensors may need to be installed near each of these antennas, which further increases the cost, size, and / or processing requirements of the UE.
[0021] In some examples, proximity detection can use a wireless transceiver to perform both wireless communication and proximity detection in the far field of the UE. In this case, a local oscillator circuit in the wireless transceiver generates a radar signal that can implement proximity detection in the far field. Such radar signals may include frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) signals or multi-tone signals. By analyzing the reflection of the radar signal, the distance (e.g., slant range) to an object (e.g., user) in the far field can be determined. Although this analysis of the reflection of the radar signal and / or the radar signal can be used for proximity detection in the far field (which may be referred to as "user detection" in this article), this analysis may be inefficient when analyzing whether the user is in the near field of the UE, because when the user is in the near field of the UE, the reflected signal may have the same or similar characteristics as the user at a greater distance than the maximum distance of the far field of the UE.
[0022] According to some aspects described herein, a UE performs near-field user detection using a radar signal analysis associated with the UE. For example, the UE may receive measurements associated with a radar signal and determine whether a user is within the near field of the UE based at least in part on one or more characteristics of these measurements. Such measurements may correspond to the energy level of the reflection of the radar signal. In addition, the one or more characteristics may include whether the energy level meets a threshold associated with a reference energy level of the UE, the amount of energy change of the energy level within a measurement sliding window, and the like. As described herein, the radar signal used to detect whether a user is in the near field may be the same radar signal (and / or radar signal of the same type, such as an FMCW signal) as the radar signal used to determine whether the user is in the far field. In this way, the UE may set the transmit power of the communication signal for the UE based at least in part on whether the user is within the near field of the UE or within the far field of the UE using the same radar signal. Therefore, some aspects described herein do not require a separate sensor system and / or a separate radar signal to detect the user in the near field and far field of the UE.
[0023] Figure 1is a diagram showing a wireless network 100 in which various aspects of the present disclosure may be practiced. The wireless network 100 may be a long term evolution (LTE) network or some other wireless network, such as a fifth generation (5G) or new radio (NR) network. The wireless network 100 may include a plurality of base stations (BSs) 110 (shown as BS 110a, BS 110b, BS 110c, and BS 110d) and other network entities. A BS is an entity that communicates with a user equipment (UE) and may also be referred to as an NR BS, Node B, gNB, 5G Node B (NB), access point (AP), transmit receive point (TRP), and the like. Each BS may provide communication coverage for a particular geographic area. In 3GPP, the term "cell" may refer to a coverage area of a BS and / or a BS subsystem serving the coverage area, depending on the context in which the term "cell" is used.
[0024] A BS may provide communication coverage for a macro cell, a pico cell, a femto cell, and / or another type of cell. A macro cell may cover a relatively large geographic area (e.g., a radius of several kilometers) and may allow unrestricted access by UEs with service subscription. A pico cell may cover a relatively small geographic area and may allow unrestricted access by UEs with service subscription. A femto cell may cover a relatively small geographic area (e.g., a home) and may allow restricted access by UEs associated with the femto cell (e.g., UEs in a closed subscriber group (CSG)). A BS for a macro cell may be referred to as a macro BS. A BS for a pico cell may be referred to as a pico BS. A BS for a femto cell may be referred to as a femto BS or a home BS. In Figure 1 In the example shown in , BS 110a may be a macro BS for macro cell 102a, BS 110b may be a pico BS for pico cell 102b, and BS 110c may be a femto BS for femto cell 102c. A BS may support one or more (e.g., three) cells. The terms "eNB", "base station", "NR BS", "gNB", "TRP", "AP", "Node B", "5G NB", and "cell" may be used interchangeably herein.
[0025] In some aspects, the cells may not necessarily be fixed, and the geographic area of the cells may move depending on the location of the mobile BS. In some aspects, the BSs may be interconnected to each other and / or to one or more other BSs or network nodes (not shown) in the wireless network 100 via various types of backhaul interfaces, such as direct physical connections, virtual networks, and / or the like using any suitable transport network.
[0026] The wireless network 100 may also include a relay station. A relay station is an entity that can receive a data transmission from an upstream station (e.g., a BS or a UE) and send the data transmission to a downstream station (e.g., a UE or a BS). A relay station may also be a UE that can relay transmissions for other UEs. Figure 1 In the example shown in FIG. 4 , a relay station 110 d may be a BS and may communicate with a macro BS 110 a and a UE 120 d to facilitate communication between the BS 110 a and the UE 120 d. A relay station may also be referred to as a relay BS, a relay base station, a relay, or the like.
[0027] The wireless network 100 may be a heterogeneous network including different types of BSs, such as macro BSs, pico BSs, femto BSs, relay BSs, etc. These different types of BSs may have different transmit power levels, different coverage areas, and different effects on interference in the wireless network 100. For example, a macro BS may have a high transmit power level (e.g., 5 to 40 watts), while a pico BS, a femto BS, and a relay BS may have a lower transmit power level (e.g., 0.1 to 2 watts).
[0028] A network controller may be coupled to a set of BSs and may provide coordination and control for these BSs. The network controller may communicate with the BSs via a backhaul. The BSs may also communicate with each other directly or indirectly, for example, via a wireless or wired backhaul.
[0029] UE 120 (e.g., 120a, 120b, 120c) can be dispersed throughout the wireless network 100, and each UE can be fixed or mobile. UE can also be referred to as an access terminal, terminal, mobile station, subscriber unit, station, etc. UE can be a cellular phone (e.g., a smart phone), a personal digital assistant (PDA), a wireless modem, a wireless communication device, a handheld device, a laptop computer, a cordless phone, a wireless local loop (WLL) station, a tablet device, a camera, a gaming device, a netbook, a smartbook, an ultrabook, a medical device or equipment, a biosensor / device, a wearable device (smart watch, smart clothing, smart glasses, smart wristband, smart jewelry (e.g., smart ring, smart bracelet)), an entertainment device (e.g., a music or video device, or a satellite radio), a vehicle component or sensor, a smart meter / sensor, an industrial manufacturing device, a global positioning system device, or any other suitable device configured to communicate via a wireless or wired medium.
[0030] Some UEs may be considered as machine type communication (MTC) or evolved or enhanced machine type communication (eMTC) UEs. MTC and eMTC UEs include, for example, robots, drones, remote control devices, sensors, meters, monitors, location tags, etc. that can communicate with a base station, another device (e.g., a remote control device), or some other entity. A wireless node may provide, for example, connectivity to or to a network (e.g., a wide area network such as the Internet or a cellular network) via a wired or wireless communication link. Some UEs may be considered as Internet of Things (IoT) devices and / or may be implemented as NB-IoT (narrowband Internet of Things) devices. Some UEs may be considered as client equipment (CPE). UE 120 may be included in a housing that houses components of UE 120 (such as processor components, memory components, etc.).
[0031] Typically, any number of wireless networks can be deployed in a given geographic area. Each wireless network can support a specific radio access technology (RAT) and can operate on one or more frequencies. RAT can also be referred to as radio technology, air interface, etc. Frequency can also be referred to as carrier, frequency channel, etc. Each frequency can support a single RAT in a given geographic area to avoid interference between wireless networks of different RATs. In some cases, NR or 5G RAT networks can be deployed.
[0032] In some aspects, two or more UEs 120 (e.g., shown as UE 120a and UE 120e) may communicate directly (e.g., without using base station 110a as an intermediary to communicate with each other) using one or more side link channels. For example, UE 120 may communicate using peer-to-peer (P2P) communication, device-to-device (D2D) communication, vehicle-to-everything (V2X) protocols (e.g., which may include vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) protocols, vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) protocols, etc.), mesh networks, etc. In this case, UE 120 may perform scheduling operations, resource selection operations, and / or other operations as performed by base station 110 as described elsewhere herein.
[0033] As indicated above, Figure 1 are provided as examples. Other examples may differ from those described in Figure 1 Examples described.

[0045] Figure 3 is a diagram conceptually illustrating an example 300 associated with near-field user detection using analysis of a radar signal associated with a user device in accordance with various aspects of the present disclosure. Example 300 includes a UE (e.g., UE 120) and a BS (e.g., BS 110). As described in various aspects of example 300, a user is determined to be within a threshold distance (and / or within a near field) of the UE based at least in part on an analysis of one or more measurements of the radar signal. The threshold distance may correspond to a threshold (e.g., 4 cm) between the near field of the UE and the far field of the UE. In some aspects, the UE may use an energy measurement of the radar signal to determine that the user is holding the UE and thereby determine that the user is within the near field of the UE, or determine whether the user is within the near field of the UE (despite not holding the UE) based on an amount of energy change indicated in a measurement sliding window associated with the radar signal.
[0046] like Figure 3, and shown by reference numeral 310, a UE may receive one or more measurements associated with a radar signal transmitted from one or more antennas (e.g., antenna 280) of the UE. These measurements may include one or more measurements of the energy level of the radar signal (which may be referred to herein as an "energy measurement") and / or the energy level of a reflection of the radar signal. The radar signal may correspond to a proximity detection signal for determining whether a user is within the near field of the UE or the far field of the UE. The radar signal may be an FMCW signal, a multi-tone signal, or the like. In some aspects, the radar signal is an FMCW signal. Typically, the frequency of the FMCW signal increases or decreases across a time interval. Different types of frequency modulation may be used, including linear frequency modulation (LFM) (e.g., chirp), sawtooth frequency modulation, triangular frequency modulation, and the like. The FMCW signal enables the use of radar-based ranging techniques to determine the distance from the UE to the user (at least within a maximum distance of the far field and within the near field, as described herein). In order to achieve a finer ranging resolution (e.g., on the order of centimeters) for close-range applications, a larger bandwidth, such as 1 gigahertz (GHz), 4 GHz, 8 GHz, etc., can be utilized. For example, the FMCW signal can have a bandwidth of approximately 4 GHz and include frequencies between approximately 26 and 30 GHz. Finer ranging resolution improves ranging accuracy and enables multiple objects (and / or users) to be distinguished in ranging. Although the generation of the FMCW signal can utilize dedicated components of the UE (e.g., a local oscillator circuit of the communication interface 270), the FMCW signal can provide accurate ranging measurements for various distances in the near field based at least in part on the analysis of the energy level of the FMCW signal, and provide accurate ranging measurements for various distances in the far field based at least in part on the bandwidth. In some aspects, the FMCW signal can enable the composition of the object to be directly measured to determine that the object is a user. As a result, the FMCW signal can be used to detect users in the near field and / or far field without using complex circuits and / or sensors. Using FMCW signals and / or radar signals as described herein, the amount of time to perform proximity detection may also be relatively short (such as within about one millisecond).
[0047] In this manner, the UE may receive and / or monitor one or more measurements associated with radar signals to allow the UE to analyze the measurements to determine whether a user is within the UE's near field.
[0048] like Figure 3As further shown in the figure and by reference numeral 320, the UE determines whether the user is holding the UE. For example, the UE may determine that the user is holding the UE based at least in part on the energy measurement indicating a threshold energy drop associated with the radar signal. The threshold energy drop may be based at least in part on a reference energy level associated with the UE. For example, the reference energy level may correspond to a measured energy level of the UE when the UE is in an open space (e.g., when there are no objects within a certain angular range of the UE).
[0049] In some aspects, the reference energy level may be unique to the UE. In this case, the reference energy level may be determined during a calibration process associated with one or more aspects described herein. For example, during and / or shortly after a manufacturing phase, the UE may undergo a calibration process to determine a reference energy level and / or a threshold energy drop associated with a radar signal when the UE is held. The UE may store and / or maintain the reference energy level and / or the threshold energy drop in a mapping and / or data structure of the UE to allow the UE to compare an energy measurement with the reference energy level and / or determine whether the energy measurement meets the threshold energy drop.
[0050] In this way, the UE can determine that the user is holding the UE (and / or determine that the user is within 1 cm of the UE) based at least in part on whether the energy measurement indicates that the energy drop meets a threshold energy drop associated with the UE, allowing the UE to determine that the user is within the near field of the UE and / or control the transmission power of communication signals from the UE accordingly.
[0051] like Figure 3 As further shown in the figure and by reference numeral 330, the UE can determine whether the user is in the near field and is not holding the UE. For example, the UE can determine that the user is in the near field and is not holding the UE based at least in part on the energy change amount indicated in the measurement sliding window satisfying the threshold energy change. As described herein, the UE can determine the energy change amount based on determining the variance of the energy signal and / or the standard deviation value of the number of samples of the measurement of the energy signal (e.g., the measurement in the measurement sliding window). The number of samples of the measurement can correspond to the number of measurements in the measurement sliding window and / or a subset of the number of measurements of the measurement sliding window (e.g., a subset that can be configured according to the desired level of accuracy, the desired processing speed, user input, etc.).
[0052] The measurement sliding window may correspond to a number of recent measurements made and / or received by the UE within a recent time period. For example, the measurement sliding window may correspond to the last 10 measurements, the last 50 measurements, the last 100 measurements, etc. Additionally or alternatively, the measurement sliding window may correspond to any number of measurements made within a recent time period (such as within the last 10 microseconds, the last 50 microseconds, the last 100 microseconds, etc.).
[0053] In some aspects, the threshold energy change amount may correspond to a reference energy change amount. In this case, the reference energy change amount may be determined during a calibration process associated with one or more aspects described herein. For example, during and / or shortly after the manufacturing stage, the UE may undergo a calibration process to determine a reference energy change amount associated with the radar signal when the user is in the near field and is not holding the UE. The UE may store and / or maintain the reference energy change amount in a mapping and / or data structure of the UE to allow the UE to determine whether the energy change amount in the sliding window meets the threshold energy change amount. In some aspects, when the radar signal is an FMCW signal, the reference energy change amount may be equal to zero and / or may be within a threshold range of zero (e.g., because the energy level of the FMCW signal is not expected to change when the user is not in the near field of the UE).
[0054] According to some aspects, one or more thresholds herein (e.g., a reference energy level of the UE, a threshold energy drop, a threshold energy change, etc.) may correspond to one or more characteristics (e.g., temperature, location, atmospheric pressure, altitude, etc.) of the physical environment of the UE (e.g., because different environments may have different effects on the UE). For example, the UE may use a mapping of profiles of these characteristics to corresponding thresholds based at least in part on these characteristics. Thus, the UE may determine one or more characteristics of the physical environment (e.g., using measurements from one or more sensors (such as a temperature sensor, a pressure sensor, a location device and / or sensor, a camera, etc.) and accordingly establish and / or set one or more thresholds mapped to the one or more physical characteristics.
[0055] In some aspects, the UE may determine one or more thresholds specific to a user of the UE. For example, the UE may determine the one or more thresholds based at least in part on a calibration process performed using one or more sensors of the user and / or the UE. For example, the UE may prompt the user via a display to hold the UE, not hold the UE but within the near field of the UE, within the far field of the UE, and take corresponding measurements to establish one or more thresholds described herein.
[0056] In some aspects, one or more thresholds described herein may be adjusted dynamically and / or over time as a user uses and / or interacts with the UE. For example, the UE may automatically (e.g., periodically and / or non-periodically) perform a self-calibration process using one or more sensors to determine that the user is not holding the UE, thereby setting a reference energy level based at least in part on the determination that the user is not holding the UE, and then use one or more sensors to determine that the user is holding the UE to determine a threshold energy drop that occurs when the user is holding the UE based at least in part on the determination that the user is holding the UE. Accordingly, the UE may perform a self-calibration process using one or more sensors to determine that the UE is not in the near field of the UE, thereby determining a reference energy change amount in a measurement sliding window, and then use one or more sensors to determine that the user is in the near field and is not holding the UE, thereby setting a threshold energy change amount based at least in part on the determination that the UE is in the near field and is not holding the UE.
[0057] In some aspects, the UE analyzes the measurement sliding window based at least in part on whether the UE detects that the user is holding the UE. For example, the UE may periodically (or aperiodically) measure the energy level associated with the UE, and if the energy level does not indicate a threshold energy drop, the UE will analyze the measurement sliding window. In some aspects, the energy measurement may be one of the measurements in the measurement sliding window. For example, the energy measurement may be the most recently received and / or most recently analyzed measurement of the sliding window (wherein the measurement sliding window includes the energy measurement and multiple measurements made or received before the energy measurement). As another example, the energy measurement may be the most recently received and / or most recently analyzed measurement of the sliding window (wherein the measurement sliding window includes the energy measurement and multiple measurements made or received before the energy measurement). In yet another example, the energy measurement may be an intermediate measurement of the measurement sliding window (wherein the measurement sliding window includes the energy measurement, the first number of measurements made or received before the energy measurement, and the second number of measurements made or received after the energy measurement). In this way, the energy measurement may trigger the analysis of the measurement sliding window and / or be a reference measurement associated with the measurement sliding window.
[0058] In this way, the UE can determine that the user is within the near field of the UE (and / or within 4 cm of the UE), even though the user may not be holding the UE, allowing the UE to set the transmit power corresponding to the user being in the near field.
[0059] like Figure 3 As further shown in FIG. 1 and by reference numeral 340, the UE may set the transmit power of the communication signal according to whether the UE detects the user in the near field. For example, the UE may reduce the transmit power of the communication signal to an MPE level corresponding to the user being in the near field of the UE.
[0060] In some aspects, the UE may set the transmit power based on whether the UE determines that the user is holding the UE. For example, when the UE determines that the user is holding the UE, the UE may set the transmit power to a first MPE level, or when the UE determines that the user is not holding the UE but is in a near field, the UE may set the transmit power to a second MPE. In this case, the second MPE level may be a transmit power greater than the first MPE level because the user is not as close to the UE as when the user is holding the UE, and therefore is not subjected to as high radiation exposure from the communication signal. Therefore, although the user is in the near field, if the user is not holding the UE, a relatively strong transmit power may be used for the communication signal to improve the signal quality and / or range of the communication signal relative to when the user is holding the UE.
[0061] In some aspects, when the UE determines that the UE is not in the near field, the UE may use one or more measurements of the radar signal to determine whether the user is in the far field of the UE. For example, the UE may determine a return frequency, bandwidth, etc. associated with the measurement of the radar signal, and determine whether the user is in the far field based at least in part on the return frequency, bandwidth, etc. Based at least in part on determining that the user is in the far field of the UE (but not in the near field), the UE may increase transmit power from an MPE level associated with the user being in the near field (e.g., if the UE previously determined that the user was in the near field), or decrease transmit power from an MPE level associated with the user being outside the far field (e.g., if the UE previously determined that the user was not in the far field).
[0062] According to some aspects, if the UE determines that the user is in the near field, after reducing the transmit power of the communication signal to an MPE level corresponding to the user being in the near field, the UE may determine that the user is outside the near field (e.g., based at least in part on the energy level returning to a reference energy level and / or the amount of energy change decreasing to zero or within a threshold range of zero), and increase the transmit power of the communication signal based on the UE being in the far field (e.g., to an MPE level corresponding to the proximity to the user, the proximity being determined at least in part based on a proximity analysis associated with the far field of the UE) and / or increase the transmit power of the communication signal (e.g., the maximum transmit power of the communication signal) based on the UE being outside the far field.
[0063] In this way, the UE can control and / or set the transmit power of communication signals based on determining whether a user is within the UE's near field, within the UE's far field, or outside the UE's far field using radar signals, as described herein.
[0064] As indicated above, Figure 3 These are provided only as one or more examples. Other examples may differ from the reference Figure 3Examples described.
[0065] Figure 4 4 is a diagram conceptually illustrating an example 400 associated with near-field user detection using radar signal analysis associated with a user device in accordance with various aspects of the present disclosure. Example 400 includes a graph of energy measurements representing a drop in a threshold energy level. More specifically, example 400 includes a graph of a reference energy measurement 410 corresponding to a reference energy level of the UE, an energy measurement 420 of a radar signal of the UE, and a drop in threshold energy 430.
[0066] Thus, as shown in the graph of example 400, if the UE is calibrated to detect a threshold energy drop using a reference energy level, and the UE receives the energy measurement of example 400, the UE can determine that the user is within the near field of the UE and / or that the user is holding the UE. As indicated above, Figure 4 These are provided only as one or more examples. Other examples may differ from the reference Figure 4 Examples described.
[0067] Figure 5 5 is a diagram conceptually illustrating an example 500 associated with near-field user detection using radar signal analysis associated with a user device in accordance with various aspects of the present disclosure. Example 500 includes a graph showing how distance affects energy variation within a measurement sliding window. More specifically, example 500 includes a graph 510 of energy measurements of a radar signal when the UE is in an open space (OS), a graph 520 of energy measurements of the radar signal when the UE is approximately 5 cm from the user (referred to herein as “5 cm energy measurement 520”), and a graph 530 of energy measurements when the UE is approximately 1 cm from the user (referred to herein as “1 cm energy measurement 530”). As shown, the energy level variation of the radar signal within the measurement sliding window increases as the user becomes closer to the UE.
[0068] Thus, as shown in the graph of example 500, if the UE is calibrated to use the amount of change in the 5 cm energy measurement 520 as the threshold amount of change, then when the threshold amount of change is greater than the amount of change in the 5 cm energy measurement 520 (and / or if the change is between the change in the 1 cm energy measurement 530 and the change in the 5 cm energy measurement 520), the UE can determine that the user is within the near field of the UE. As indicated above, Figure 5 These are provided only as one or more examples. Other examples may differ from the reference Figure 5 Examples described.
[0069] Figure 6is a diagram conceptually illustrating an example 600 associated with near-field user detection using analysis of radar signals associated with a user device in accordance with various aspects of the present disclosure. Example 600 includes an example logic flow for analyzing one or more measurements associated with a radar signal to determine whether a user is in the near field or far field of a UE, as described herein.
[0070] As shown in example 600 and by reference numeral 610, the UE may determine whether the user is holding the UE. For example, the UE may determine whether the energy measurement indicates that the energy drop meets a threshold energy drop associated with the radar signal. If the energy measurement indicates the threshold energy drop, the UE may determine that the user is in the near field of the UE and accordingly set the transmit power of the UE to an MPE level associated with the user being in the near field of the UE.
[0071] On the other hand, if the energy measurement does not indicate a threshold energy drop associated with a radar signal, the UE may determine that the user is not holding the UE, and the UE may determine whether the user is in the near field without holding the UE, as indicated by reference numeral 620. For example, the UE may determine whether the energy change in the sliding window of the energy measurement indicates that the energy change amount satisfies a threshold energy change amount corresponding to the user being in the near field. If the sliding window of the energy measurement indicates the threshold energy change amount, the UE may determine that the user is in the near field. On the other hand, if the sliding window of the energy measurement does not indicate or does not have the threshold energy change amount, the UE may perform a far field analysis to determine whether the user is in the far field of the UE.
[0072] As indicated above, Figure 6 These are provided only as one or more examples. Other examples may differ from the reference Figure 6 Examples described.
[0073] Figure 7 is a flow chart of an example process 700 associated with near-field user detection using radar signal analysis associated with a user device. In some aspects, Figure 7 One or more process blocks of may be performed by a UE (eg, UE 120, device 200, etc.). [0074] like Figure 7As shown in , process 700 may include receiving a measurement sliding window associated with a radar signal transmitted by a UE (block 710). For example, a UE (e.g., using processor 220, memory 230, storage component 240, input component 250, output component 260, communication interface 270, antenna 280, etc.) may receive a measurement sliding window associated with a radar signal transmitted by the UE, as described above.
[0075] like Figure 7 As also shown in FIG. 7 , process 700 may include determining that a user is within a threshold distance of a UE, wherein the threshold distance is determined to be a first distance when an energy measurement associated with a radar signal indicates that an energy drop satisfies a threshold energy drop, or wherein the threshold distance is determined to be a second distance when a measurement sliding window indicates that an amount of energy change satisfies a threshold amount of energy change associated with a radar signal (block 720). For example, a UE (e.g., using processor 220, memory 230, storage component 240, input component 250, output component 260, communication interface 270, antenna 280, etc.) may determine that a user is within a threshold distance of the UE, as described above. In some aspects, the threshold distance is determined to be a first distance when an energy measurement associated with a radar signal indicates that an energy drop satisfies a threshold energy drop. In some aspects, the threshold distance is determined to be a second distance when a measurement sliding window indicates that an amount of energy change satisfies a threshold amount of energy change associated with a radar signal.

[0084] In the thirteenth aspect combined with one or more aspects of the eleventh to twelfth aspects, when setting the transmit power of a communication signal, the UE may reduce the transmit power from at least one of the following to a first maximum permitted exposure level: a second maximum permitted exposure level, or a third maximum permitted exposure level associated with the communication signal when it is determined that the user is not within a threshold distance; reduce the transmit power from the third maximum permitted exposure level to the second maximum permitted exposure level; or increase the transmit power from the first maximum permitted exposure level to the second maximum permitted exposure level.
[0085] In the fourteenth aspect combined with one or more of the eleventh to thirteenth aspects, the UE may determine, based at least in part on the measurement sliding window, that the user is no longer within a threshold distance of the UE; and increase the transmit power of the UE's communication signal from a threshold level.
[0086] although Figure 7 Example blocks of process 700 are shown, but in some aspects process 700 may include additional blocks, fewer blocks, different blocks, or different blocks. Figure 7 Additionally or alternatively, two or more blocks of process 700 may be performed in parallel.
