AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing energy-based surgical instruments struggle to achieve efficient and precise control during tissue cutting and hemostasis, especially when switching between ultrasound and electrosurgical modes, making it difficult to balance cutting and coagulation effects.

Method used

An energy-based surgical instrument has been designed, whose end effector includes independently controllable distal and proximal electrodes capable of delivering radiofrequency energy separately or in concert, and providing different pressure controls through a pressure-changing mechanism to achieve flexible switching between cutting and coagulation functions.

Benefits of technology

It enables flexible switching between cutting and coagulation modes under different tissue conditions, improving the efficiency and precision of surgical procedures and reducing tissue damage.

Abstract

A system includes an energy-based surgical instrument having an end effector, the end effector having one or more jaw grips. The end effector may include a segmented electrode having a distal portion and a proximal portion coupled to one jaw clamp and a return electrode coupled to the other jaw clamp. The distal and proximal portions may be energized individually or cooperatively with radio frequency (RF) energy. A pressure change mechanism may selectively limit or increase pressure at the distal portion of the electrode. The end effector may include a jaw clamp having a tissue pad positioned within the channel. The end effector may include a conformable or erodible electrode extending to a distal tip of the jaw assembly. Other embodiments are described and claimed.
