Method for representing environmental structures in an occupancy grid (1) for a driver assistance system (A1,A2,AN), wherein the environmental information is provided by at least one of the following devices - Environmental sensor, in particular camera, radar or lidar sensor - Navigation device - Radio receiver (c2x), characterized in that a value for a criticality (K) of the environmental structure is stored in the occupancy grid (1) and a function of a driver assistance system (A1,A2,AN) is controlled based on a hazard risk, wherein the criticality (K) is a measure of the negative consequences of driving over these environmental structures, wherein the criticality is based on the damage to be expected when driving over the area and is adapted to known tables for classifying injury severity.
