System for a motor vehicle, comprising: a first control; and a telematics control unit which, in response to receiving an instruction containing a transmission technology identifier or an installation technology identifier indicating transmission and installation technologies supported by the first control unit to update the first control unit with a software update, is configured to update the first control unit with a software update, to detect a transmission state and an installation state compatible with the transmission technology and installation technology using a technology table, and, in response to the detection that the motor vehicle is in the installation state, to install the software update on the first control unit; wherein the transmission state is defined by one or more parameters in conjunction with a transmission state and a vehicle speed, and the installation state is defined by one or more parameters in conjunction with an ignition state and the transmission state.
