AREA OF REVELATION
[0001] This disclosure relates to power transmission systems and to gear assemblies for power transmission applications having a two-way power flow and high reduction performance. BACKGROUND OF REVELATION
[0002] Work vehicles such as those used in agriculture, construction, and forestry, and other vehicles, equipment, and machinery may be powered by a power source that includes an internal combustion engine or an alternative power source. Engines require mechanical input from a starter motor to initiate the rotation of a crankshaft, and thereby the reciprocating motion of the pistons in the cylinders to cause ignition. A typical starter motor includes an electric motor with a coil that selectively couples the output of the electric motor to the engine for the purpose of starting. Once the engine is running, the starter motor is decoupled from the engine and is no longer required. Engine-powered applications also typically include an alternator, which is powered by a running engine and converts mechanical energy in the form of alternating current into electrical energy. The alternator is usually driven by a belt that takes power from the engine.
[0003] DE 10 2017 203 026 A1 describes a combination device comprising a prime mover starter and a power generator for a work vehicle, consisting of an electric machine and a gear set, wherein the gear set receives rotational inputs from the electric machine and a prime mover and mechanically couples them in two power flow directions with different gear ratios.
[0004] DE 10 2014 200 723 B3 describes a planetary gear arrangement with a power input driving a first sun gear, a power output with an output member, a ring gear arrangement, a planet carrier with a planetary arrangement, an output sun gear, and two freewheel devices. These devices transmit rotational motion to the output member when the first sun gear rotates in opposite directions. The transmission effect varies depending on the freewheel device used.
[0005] DE 10 2014 200 720 B3 describes a planetary gear arrangement with a power input driving a first sun gear, a power output with an output member, a ring gear arrangement, a planet carrier with a planetary arrangement with coupled planets, and two freewheel devices. Depending on the direction of rotation of the first sun gear, one of the freewheel devices locks, causing the output member to always rotate in the same direction. The transmission effect is higher when the first freewheel device is locked than when the second.
[0006] DE 10 2010 060 140 A1 describes a drive system for a motor vehicle, consisting of an internal combustion engine, an electric motor, and a planetary gear with a stepped planetary gear that connects the internal combustion engine and the electric motor selectively with a first gear ratio or a second, different gear ratio. A motor vehicle with such a drive system is also described.
[0007] DE 199 23 316 A1 describes a drive system for a motor vehicle comprising a starter and generator unit arranged in a drive train with a drive shaft. The starter and generator unit has an electric machine operable as an electric motor with a starter function or as an electric generator, and a planetary gear with a sun gear, a planetary gear, and a ring gear. The planetary gear is connected to the electric machine, the drive shaft, and a housing via shafts and switching elements. In starting mode, a gear ratio greater than 1 can be set, and in generator mode, a gear ratio equal to 1 can be set. The starter and generator unit is arranged in a sealed manner in a region of the housing. SUMMARY OF REVELATION

[0013] Similar reference symbols in the different drawings indicate similar elements. DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0014] The following describes one or more exemplary embodiments of a disclosed dual-mode, high-reduction automatic transmission system, as illustrated in the accompanying figures of the drawings briefly described above. Various modifications to the exemplary embodiments could be contemplated by a person of ordinary skill in the art.
[0015] In one or more exemplary implementations of the disclosed multi-gear, high-reduction power transmission system, bidirectional power transmission is provided at two different gear ratios, one of which includes a high-speed, high-torque reduction gear. Generally, power is transmitted in two different modes to serve two separate functions. However, other modes are contemplated in other embodiments. Power flow in one operating mode is directed from an input shaft to an output shaft, each of which serves the opposite function in the other operating mode. Switching between the modes is accomplished automatically through the use of two freewheeling mechanisms that operate mechanically without the need for external control mechanisms.
[0016] The following description refers to the power transmission with respect to specific work vehicle applications for the purpose of demonstrating examples. In an internal combustion engine, the cranking function is required to initiate operation, while an occasional or continuous power generation function is required for the engine's operating time. Since the cranking and power generation functions are needed at different times, and since both may require the use of an electric machine, the disclosed system economically provides for both functions through the use of one machine. The present disclosure is not limited to vehicle applications or those involving engine starting, but encompasses any application in which a multi-speed, high-reduction power transmission is required.Accordingly, the teachings of the present disclosure may be applied to power transmission systems in a variety of applications, including, if desired, vehicle engines.
[0017] In one example of the present disclosure, as described further below, a powertrain system includes a first device providing a first input and receiving a second output. A second device providing a second input and receiving a first output. A powertrain has two planetary gear sets and operates in a first mode with a first gear ratio, wherein the first input is received from the first device and the first output is then provided to the second device. The powertrain operates in a second mode with a second gear ratio, different from the first gear ratio, wherein the second input is received from the second device and the second output is then provided to the first device.A pair of freewheel mechanisms automatically engage / disengage one of the first or second devices with the powertrain to provide the two modes.
[0018] In one example, the first device is an electric machine that functions as a starter and generator. In this example, the second device is a motor that is started by the first device in starter mode and then drives the first device in alternator mode.
[0019] As mentioned above, the high-reduction, dual-mode automatic transmission system described herein can be used in a wide variety of applications. Fig. 1, an example of a power transmission system that could be installed in a work vehicle 10, which in this example is depicted as an agricultural tractor. However, it is contemplated that other configurations are contemplated, including configurations with the work vehicle 10 as a different type of tractor or as a work vehicle used for other aspects of agriculture, construction, or forestry (e.g., combine harvesters, timber skidders, road graders, and so on). It is further contemplated that the disclosed high reduction, dual-mode power transmission system could also be used in other non-work vehicle vehicles, in off-vehicle applications (e.g., stationary installations), and with other equipment and machinery where an automatic, multi-mode power transmission is useful.
[0020] In the current example, the work vehicle 10 includes a main frame or chassis 12 supported on the ground by wheels 14. Two of the four wheels 14 may be driven to move the work vehicle 10, and at least the front wheels 14 are steerable to control the direction of travel. The chassis 12 supports a power source in the form of an internal combustion engine, referred to in this example as engine 16. A transmission in the driveline (not shown) connects the engine device 16 to the wheels 14 to provide different speeds for different operating conditions. An operator's cab 18 is provided, which houses the user interface and controls (e.g., various steering wheels, levers, switches, buttons, screens, keyboards, etc.).The work vehicle 10 may be configured to utilize power from the motor device 16 and / or deliver it to connected equipment to generate electrical power or to enable mechanical, fluid-powered, or other functions.
[0021] To supply and withdraw power to the engine device 16, a power transmission 20 is mounted in the engine compartment 22 of the work vehicle 10 and, in this example, is connected to a device configured as an electric machine in the form of a starter-generator device 24. The power transmission 20 and the starter-generator device 24 are preferably mounted directly and compactly on the engine device 16, as shown, for example, in Fig. 2, so that they do not protrude significantly from the engine assembly 16 (thus forcing an expansion of the space required in the engine compartment). In some examples, the transmission 20 and the starter-generator assembly 24 are configured to be installed in place of a conventional starter motor. Notably, the starter-generator assembly 24 can be mounted on the side 26 of the engine assembly 16 at a location where a poly-V (or other) belt is not required. Removing the starter-generator from the belt area reduces the complexity of the layout of the engine assembly 16 and allows for a more compact installation. The starter-generator device 24 may generally be mounted on or near the engine device 16 at a location suitable for coupling to the engine device 16, such as the flywheel or other element connected to the crankshaft, as described further below. When connected to the crankshaft, the powertrain 20 is configured for use both utilizing power from the engine device 16 and delivering power to crank the engine device 16 for starting. Thus, the powertrain 20 operates in at least two modes; in this example, one mode is when the starter-generator device 24 operates in the cranking mode, and another mode is when the starter-generator device 24 operates in the power generating mode.
[0022] To provide the two-mode function, the power transmission 20 may be connected in a power transmission system 28 as shown in Fig. 3. In this example, the engine device 16 includes a crankshaft 30 connected to a series of pistons 32 arranged to reciprocate within their respective combustion chambers 34. The crankshaft 30 may be connected to a power take-off, such as a pulley 36, which could be connected in a conventional manner to a toothed belt 38 for driving various accessories (not shown). The opposite end of the crankshaft 30 may be connected to a driveline transmission 40 to provide various gear ratios for propelling the work vehicle 10, and it may include a flywheel 42. In this example, a further connection to the crankshaft 30 is provided so that the pinion gear 44 of the engine device 16 is internally available for coupling to the driveline 20.In other embodiments, the transmission 20 may be coupled to the crankshaft 30 at other locations, such as at the pulley 36, the flywheel 42, or at another location in the driveline of the work vehicle 10.
[0023] The pinion gear 44 engages the pinion gear 46 connected to a shaft 48. The shaft 48 extends to the power transmission 20 and there specifically to two freewheel mechanisms 50, 52. The freewheel mechanisms 50, 52 are two-state devices that allow coupling or decoupling. Examples include sleeve and overrunning clutches, spreader clutches, mechanical diodes, ratchet clutches, or other mechanisms that allow freewheeling and engagement. The freewheel mechanisms 50, 52 can be located within the power transmission 20, as in the current example, or at a location external to the power transmission 20. The power transmission 20 includes a pinion gear assembly 54 configured to provide high-ratio power transmission in two modes between the motor device 16 and the starter-generator device 24. One mode includes operating the starter-generator device 24 in a motor mode to start the motor device 16.Another mode involves operating the starter-generator device 24 in a generator mode to generate electricity. The starter-generator device 24 is coupled to one of several energy storage devices, such as a battery 56 that utilizes direct current (DC) through a converter / rectifier 58. In this example, the starter-generator device is an alternator, a generator that generates alternating current (AC). The converter / rectifier 58 converts the direct current from the battery 56 to alternating current during the starter-generator device 24 cranking of the engine device 16. In addition, the converter / rectifier 58 converts alternating current to direct current when the engine device 16 drives the starter-generator device 24 to generate electricity for storage in the battery 56 and / or for other purposes. The inverter / rectifier 58 may be a separate component as shown, or it may be integrated into the starter-generator device 24. In other embodiments, the starter-generator device 24 and the motor device 16 may be replaced by other devices that function in multiple modes through the operation of the powertrain 20.
[0024] In relation to Fig. 4 and Fig. 5, the power transmission system 28 is shown in two modes: a first mode in Fig. 4, in which the starter-generator device 24 in the engine mode serves to start the engine device 16, and a second mode in Fig. 5, in which the starter-generator device 24 is operating in generator mode and is driven by the motor device 16. In this example, the power transmission system 28 includes a power transmission 20 that links two input / output devices in the form of the starter-generator device 24 and the motor device 16. The starter-generator device 24 and the motor device 16 each act to provide both input and output functions, depending on the mode of the power transmission system 28. The pinion assembly 54 and the freewheel mechanisms 50, 52 can be installed in a housing 60 as a unit, or as separate, interconnected parts, providing a link between the starter-generator device 24 and the motor device 16. The freewheel mechanisms 50, 52, in this example, include their respective internal components 70, 72 and external components 74, 76.The inner components 70, 72 and the outer components 74, 76 are rotatable and include respective locking elements 78, 80 for locking / unlocking the inner component 72 to the outer component 76 (in the case of locking elements 78), or the inner component 72 to the outer component 76 (in the case of locking elements 80). More specifically, and illustrated as an example, in the freewheel mechanism 50, the outer component 74 can be operated to start the engine device 16 by the starter-generator device 24. The locking elements 78 function to lock the outer component 74 to the inner component 70 while the outer component 74 is moved to rotate. As the motor device 16 starts and begins operation, when the inner component 70 begins to rotate faster than the outer component, the locking elements 78 unlock, and the inner components 70 freewheel relative to the outer component 74 in the same direction of rotation. Accordingly, the transition from torque output to freewheeling occurs automatically, without external control.
[0025] To provide sufficient torque from the starter-generator assembly 24 to the outer component 74 to start the engine assembly 16, the pinion assembly 54 includes two planetary gear sets 82, 84 providing a high gear reduction ratio of approximately 100:1. The planetary gear sets 82, 84 are located within the housing 60. The planetary gear set 82 includes a sun gear 88 directly connected to the starter-generator assembly 24 via a shaft 90. A set of planet gears 92 mesh with and orbit the sun gear 88. The planet gears 92 also mesh with a fixed / non-rotating ring gear 94 that is fixedly connected to or formed as part of the housing 60. The other planetary gear set 84 does not include a sun gear but does have a set of planet gears 96 that mesh with a ring gear 98.Each of the planet gears 96 is aligned and connected to the corresponding one of the planet gears 92, so that effectively the planet gears 96 also orbit the sun gear 88. The planet gears 92, 96 may be constructed as compound planet gears, each with two pinions paired as fixed pinions and arranged longitudinally to rotate together about a common axis, and they may have different radii and / or different numbers of teeth. In this example, each aligned pair of the planet gears 92, 96 is supported by a common carrier 100, and the planet gears 92 are larger / have more teeth than the planet gears 96.
[0026] The ring gear 98 is connected to the outer component 76 of the freewheel mechanism 52, and the carrier 100 is connected to the outer component 74 of the freewheel mechanism 50. Each of the inner components 70, 72 of the freewheel mechanism 50, 52 is connected to the motor device 16. The inner component 72 is connected to the motor device 16 through a torque-transmitting member 102 and the shaft 48. The shaft 48, the torque-transmitting member 102, and the inner component 72 may be connected or molded as a single part, and in some embodiments, take the shape of a single part, such as a shaft. The inner component 70 is connected to the motor device 16 through a torque-transmitting member 104 and the shaft 48. The shaft 48, the torque-transmitting member 104, and the inner component 70 may be connected or molded as a single part, and in some embodiments, take the shape of a single part, such as a shaft.
[0027] To start the engine device 16, the freewheel mechanism 50 is decoupled / freewheeling and the freewheel mechanism 52 is coupled and transmits torque with the locking elements 80 locked between the inner and outer components 72, 76. As in Fig. 4, this provides a power flow 106 from the starter-generator device 24 to the motor device 16, passing sequentially through the shaft 90, the sun gear 88, the planet gears 92, the planet gears 96, the ring gear 98, the one-way clutch mechanism 52, the torque-transmitting member 102, and the shaft 48. In this example, the sun gear 88 is smaller than the planet gears 92 and provides the first stage of reduction. The planet gears 96 are smaller than the planet gears 92, providing the second stage of reduction. The planet gears 96 are smaller than the planet gears 98, providing the third stage of reduction. In some embodiments, the total reduction ratio from the sun gear 88 to the shaft 48 is approximately 100:1 and provides high torque for starting the motor device 16.
[0028] To operate the starter-generator device 24 by operation of the motor device 16, the freewheel mechanism 52 is decoupled / freewheeling and the freewheel mechanism 50 is coupled and transmits torque with the locking elements 78 locked between the inner and outer components 70, 74. As shown in Fig. 5, this provides a power flow 108 from the motor device 16 to the starter-generator device 24, passing sequentially through the shaft 48, the torque-transmitting member 104, the one-way clutch mechanism 50, the carrier 100, the planetary gears 92, the sun gear 88, and the shaft 90. The ratio of the motor device 16 to the sun gear 88 may be in the range of 3:1 to 4:1, or equal to, or in some embodiments, may provide for a speed increase.
[0029] Using the examples described above, a high-reduction automatic power transmission system provides a high-speed reduction mode for high torque output and another mode with a low speed reduction or speed increase for high-speed output. Switching between the two modes is accomplished automatically in response to the relative speeds between input and output through the use of two mechanical overrunning devices.
