[0001] The innovation relates to a data carrier according to the preamble of claim 1. Such data carriers are already known and have been used for some time in vehicle registration procedures for all types of motor vehicles, where secure data exchange between the owner of a motor vehicle and a central authority, in particular a government agency such as the vehicle registration office, is required. The data carriers used in this process were formerly known as the vehicle registration certificate and vehicle title. Today, they are referred to as registration certificate Part 1 and registration certificate Part 2. The data carrier contains relevant data on the owner and the motor vehicle in question. Additionally, the data carrier includes a code designation intended to guarantee reliable authentication of the owner during data exchange with the central authority.For security reasons, the code marking on the data carrier is covered by an opaque protective layer. This protective layer consists of a peelable film or a rub-off varnish layer. These protective layers should only be removed when the code markings are made visible as part of an approval process. The code marking hidden beneath the protective layer is usually applied to the data carrier using a printing process. Unfortunately, it sometimes happens that removing this protective layer damages the code marking on the data carrier to such an extent that it is no longer reliably legible. Consequently, authentication of the holder is no longer possible, and the approval process cannot be carried out.

Data carrier (1) according to claim 1, characterized in that the code designation (1.1) incorporated into the data carrier (1) is covered on both sides of the data carrier (1) by a removable protective layer (1.2A, 1.2B). Data carrier (1) according to one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the data carrier (1) is a vehicle registration certificate.
