Abstract

This document generally relates to wireless communication that includes a transmitting node that determines a listen-before-talk (LBT) failure of a reference signal (RS) according to whether a RS instance of the RS is successfully transmitted. In addition, the transmitting node determines a consistent LBT failure of the RS according to the LBT failure of the RS. Also, the transmitting node reports at least one of: an occurrence of the LBT failure of the RS, or an occurrence of the consistent LBT failure of the RS. The transmitting node includes a user device or a radio access network (RAN) node, and the RS includes at least one of a sounding reference signal (SRS) resource transmitted by the user device, a downlink positioning reference signal (DL-PRS) resource transmitted by the RAN node, or a sidelink positioning reference signal (SL-PRS) resource transmitted by the user device.

[0012] The present description describes various embodiments of systems, apparatuses, devices, and methods for wireless communications that relates to listen-before-talk (LBT) procedures and reporting.

[0013] FIG. 1 shows a diagram of an example wireless communication system 100 including a plurality of communication nodes (or just nodes) that are configured to wirelessly communicate with each other. In general, the communication nodes include at least one user device 102 and at least one wireless access node 104. The example wireless communication system 100 in FIG. 1 is shown as including two user devices 102, including a first user device 102 (1) and a second user device 102 (2) , and one wireless access node 104. However, various other examples of the wireless communication system 100 that include any of various combinations of one or more user devices 102 and / or one or more wireless access nodes 104 may be possible.

[0014] In general, a user device as described herein, such as the user device 102, may include a single electronic device or apparatus, or multiple (e.g., a network of) electronic devices or apparatuses, capable of communicating wirelessly over a network. A user device may comprise or otherwise be referred to as a user terminal, a user terminal device, or a user equipment (UE) . Additionally, a user device may be or include, but not limited to, a mobile device (such as a mobile phone, a smart phone, a smart watch, a tablet, a laptop computer,  vehicle or other vessel (human, motor, or engine-powered, such as an automobile, a plane, a train, a ship, or a  bicycle as non-limiting examples) or a fixed or stationary device, (such as a desktop computer or other computing device that is not ordinarily moved for long periods of time, such as appliances, other relatively heavy devices including Internet of things (IoT) , or computing devices used in commercial or industrial environments, as non-limiting examples) . In various embodiments, a user device 102 may include transceiver circuitry 106 coupled to an antenna 108 to effect wireless communication with the wireless access node 104. The transceiver circuitry 106 may also be coupled to a processor 110, which may also be coupled to a memory 112 or other storage device. The memory 112 may store therein instructions or code that, when read and executed by the processor 110, cause the processor 110 to implement various ones of the methods described herein.

[0015] Additionally, in general, a wireless access node as described herein, such as the wireless access node 104, may include at least one device, electronic and / or network device or apparatus, and may comprise one or more base stations or other wireless network access points capable of communicating wirelessly over a network with one or more user devices and / or with one or more other wireless access nodes 104. For example, the wireless access node 104 may comprise at least one of: a 4G LTE base station, a 5G NR base station, a 5G central-unit base station, a 5G distributed-unit base station, a next generation Node B (gNB) , an enhanced Node B (eNB) , or other similar or next-generation (e.g., 6G) base stations, or a location management function (LMF) , in various embodiments. A wireless access node 104 may include transceiver circuitry 114 coupled to an antenna 116, which may include an antenna tower 118 in various approaches, to effect wireless communication with the user device 102 or another wireless access node 104. The transceiver circuitry 114 may also be coupled to one or more processors 120, which may also be coupled to a memory 122 or other storage device. The memory 122 may store therein instructions or code that, when read and executed by the processor 120, cause the processor 120 to implement one or more of the methods described herein.

[0016] FIG. 2 shows a block diagram of an example configuration of a wireless access node 104. In the example configuration, the wireless access node 104 may include a location management function (LMF) 202 and one or more radio access network (RAN) nodes 204. Some embodiments may include only one RAN node 204. Other embodiments, such as shown in FIG. 2, may include a plurality, or an n-number, of RAN nodes 204 (1) to 204 (n) , where n is two or more. In any of various embodiments, a RAN node 204 may be or include a Next Generation (NG) -RAN node, a gNB, a ng-eNB, a transmission reception point (TRP) , and / or a base station, an example of which is shown in FIG. 2. Additionally, each component of the wireless access node 104, such as the LMF 202 and each RAN node 204, may include at least one network device, and / or may be configured in hardware or a combination of hardware and software, such as by having a processor 120, a memory  122, transceiver circuitry 114, an antenna 116, and / or an antenna tower 118, such as shown in FIG. 1 for the wireless access node 104.

[0017] Additionally, as shown in FIG. 2, the LMF 202 and each of the RAN nodes 204 may be configured to communicate (transmit and receive) with each other, such as signals or messages, and may be configured to communicate (transmit and receive) with one or more user device 102, either directly or indirectly via another component of the wireless access node 104. For example, the LMF 202 may directly communicate with a user device 102. In particular embodiments, the LMF 202 may directly communicate with a user device 102 according to a Long-Term Evolution (LTE) positioning protocol (LPP) (i.e., via LPP signaling) . Also, a RAN node 204 may directly communicate with a user device 102. In particular embodiments, a RAN node 204 may directly communicate with a user device 102 at least via radio resource control (RRC) signaling. In addition, the LMF 202 may directly communicate with each RAN node 204. In particular embodiments, the LMF 202 may directly communicate with each RAN node 204 according to New Radio Positioning Protocol A (NRPPa) (i.e., via NRPPa signaling) . Also, for at least some embodiments, such as shown in FIG. 2, each RAN node 204 may include one or more sub-components. For example, a RAN node 204 may include a gNB and / or at least one transmission / reception point (TRP) 208. Additionally, as used herein unless specified otherwise, the terms “network” or “network device” may include at least one gNB 206, at least one ng-eNB, at least one TRP 208, at least one base station, at least one RAN node 204 (e.g., at least one NG-RAN node) and / or at least one LMF 202. Further functionality of the LMF 202 and the RAN nodes 204 is described in further detail below.

[0018] In addition, referring back to FIG. 1, in various embodiments, two communication nodes in the wireless system 100-such as a user device 102 and a wireless access node 104, two user devices 102 without a wireless access node 104, or two wireless access nodes 104 without a user device 102-may be configured to wirelessly communicate with each other in or over a mobile network and / or a wireless access network according to one or more standards and / or specifications. In general, the standards and / or specifications may define the rules or procedures under which the communication nodes can wirelessly communicate, which, in various embodiments, may include those for communicating in millimeter (mm) -Wave bands, and / or with multi-antenna schemes and beamforming functions. In addition or alternatively, the standards and / or specifications are those that define a radio access technology and / or a cellular technology, such as Fourth Generation (4G) Long Term Evolution (LTE) , Fifth Generation (5G) New Radio (NR) , or New Radio Unlicensed (NR-U) , as non-limiting examples.

[0019] Additionally, in the wireless system 100, the communication nodes are configured to wirelessly  communicate signals between each other. In general, a communication in the wireless system 100 between two communication nodes can be or include a transmission or a reception, and is generally both simultaneously, depending on the perspective of a particular node in the communication. For example, for a given communication between a first node and a second node where the first node is transmitting a signal to the second node and the second node is receiving the signal from the first node, the first node may be referred to as a source or transmitting node or device, the second node may be referred to as a destination or receiving node or device, and the communication may be considered a transmission for the first node and a reception for the second node. Of course, since communication nodes in a wireless system 100 can both send and receive signals, a single communication node may be both a transmitting / source node and a receiving / destination node simultaneously or switch between being a source / transmitting node and a destination / receiving node.

[0020] Also, particular signals can be characterized or defined as either an uplink (UL) signal, a downlink (DL) signal, or a sidelink (SL) signal. An uplink signal is a signal transmitted from a user device 102 to a wireless access node 104. A downlink signal is a signal transmitted from a wireless access node 104 to a user device 102. A sidelink signal is a signal transmitted from a one user device 102 to another user device 102, or a signal transmitted from one wireless access node 104 to a another wireless access node 104. Also, for sidelink transmissions, a first / source user device 102 directly transmits a sidelink signal to a second / destination user device 102 without any forwarding of the sidelink signal to a wireless access node 104.

[0021] Additionally, signals communicated between communication nodes in the system 100 may be characterized or defined as a data signal or a control signal. In general, a data signal is a signal that includes or carries data, such multimedia data (e.g., voice and / or image data) , and a control signal is a signal that carries control information that configures the communication nodes in certain ways in order to communicate with each other, or otherwise controls how the communication nodes communicate data signals with each other. Also, certain signals may be defined or characterized by combinations of data / control and uplink / downlink / sidelink, including uplink control signals, uplink data signals, downlink control signals, downlink data signals, sidelink control signals, and sidelink data signals.

[0022] For at least some specifications, such as 5G NR, data and control signals are transmitted and / or carried on physical channels. Generally, a physical channel corresponds to a set of time-frequency resources used for transmission of a signal. Different types of physical channels may be used to transmit different types of signals. For example, physical data channels (or just data channels) are used to transmit data signals, and  physical control channels (or just control channels) are used to transmit control signals. Example types of  physical data channels include, but are not limited to, a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) used to communicate downlink data signals, a physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) used to communicate uplink data signals, and a physical sidelink shared channel (PSSCH) used to communicate sidelink data signals. In addition, example types of physical control channels include, but are not limited to, a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) used to communicate downlink control signals, a physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) used to communicate uplink control signals, and a physical sidelink control channel (PSCCH) used to communicate sidelink control signals. As used herein for simplicity, unless specified otherwise, a particular type of physical channel is also used to refer to a signal that is transmitted on that particular type of physical channel, and / or a transmission on that particular type of transmission. As an example illustration, a PDSCH refers to the physical downlink shared channel itself, a downlink data signal transmitted on the PDSCH, or a downlink data transmission. Accordingly, a communication node transmitting or receiving a PDSCH means that the communication node is transmitting or receiving a signal on a PDSCH.

[0023] Additionally, for at least some specifications, such as 5G NR, and / or for at least some types of control signals, a control signal that a communication node transmits may include control information comprising the information necessary to enable transmission of one or more data signals between communication nodes, and / or to schedule one or more data channels (or one or more transmissions on data channels) . For example, such control information may include the information necessary for proper reception, decoding, and demodulation of a data signals received on physical data channels during a data transmission, and / or for uplink scheduling grants that inform the user device about the resources and transport format to use for uplink data transmissions. In some embodiments, the control information includes downlink control information (DCI) that is transmitted in the downlink direction from a wireless access node 104 to a user device 102. In other embodiments, the control information includes uplink control information (UCI) that is transmitted in the uplink direction from a user device 102 to a wireless access node 104, or sidelink control information (SCI) that is transmitted in the sidelink direction from one user device 102 (1) to another user device 102 (2) .

[0024] In addition, in some embodiments, a transmitting node may transmit a reference signal for positioning, such via an interface. For example, a gNB 206 may transmit a downlink positioning reference signal (DL-PRS) to a user device 102 via a Uu interface. As another example, a user device 102 may transmit a sounding reference signal (SRS) to a gNB 206, such as via a Uu interface. As another example, a user device 102 may transmit a sidelink positioning reference signal (SL-PRS) to another user device 102. For at least  some embodiments, when the transmitting node wants to transmit the reference signal in a licensed band, the transmitting node may do so without an additional procedure. In addition, when the transmitting node wants to transmit in an unlicensed band, the transmitting node may first perform a listen-before-talk (LBT) procedure (or just LBT) before transmitting the reference signal. If the LBT is unsuccessful or fails (referred to herein as an LBT failure) , then the transmitting node may not transmit the reference signal. That is, only if the LBT is successful will the transmitting node transmit the reference signal.

[0025] FIG. 3 shows a flow chart of example method 300 for wireless communication involving listen-before-talk (LBT) failures. At block 302, a transmitting node determines a listen-before-talk (LBT) failure of a reference signal (RS) according to whether a RS instance of the RS is successfully transmitted. At block 304, the transmitting node determines a consistent LBT failure of the RS according to the LBT failure of the RS. At block 306, the transmitting node reports an occurrence of the LBT failure of the RS, or an occurrence of the consistent LBT failure of the RS. In any of various embodiments, the transmitting node includes a user device 102 or a radio access network (RAN) node 204. Also, in any of various embodiments, the RS includes at least one of a sounding reference signal (SRS) resource transmitted by the user device 102, a downlink positioning reference signal (DL-PRS) resource transmitted by the RAN node 204, or a sidelink positioning reference signal (SL-PRS) resource transmitted by the user device 102.

[0026] In some embodiments of the method 300, the transmitting node determines a consistent LBT failure of a RS transmission according to the consistent LBT failure of the RS, and may report that the consistent LBT failure of the RS transmission has occurred. In some of these embodiments, the RS includes the SRS resource, and the RS transmission includes at least one of: a SRS resource set, a SRS resource set for positioning, a bandwidth part (BWP) of the SRS resource, a BWP of the SRS resource for positioning, a serving cell of the SRS resource, or a serving cell of the SRS resource for positioning. In other of these embodiments, the RS includes the SL-PRS resource, and the RS transmission includes at least one of: a SL-PRS resource set, a transmission resource pool of the SL-PRS resource, a bandwidth part (BWP) of the SL-PRS resource, or a serving cell of the SL-PRS resource. In still other of these embodiments, the RS includes the DL-PRS resource, and the RS transmission includes at least one of: a DL-PRS resource set, a transmission reception point (TRP) of the DL-PRS resource, or a frequency layer of the DL-PRS resource. In some of these latter embodiments, the transmitting node includes the user device 102, the RS instance includes a SL-PRS instance, and the user device 102 determines whether the SL-PRS instance of the SL-PRS resource is successfully sent according to an LBT result of the SL-PRS instance and an LBT result of a scheduling sidelink control indicator (SCI) .

[0027] In some embodiments of the method 300, a priority or a channel access priority class (CAPC) of the RS or the RS transmission is associated with at least one of: a SRS resource, a SRS resource for positioning, a SRS resource set, a SRS resource set for positioning, a bandwidth part (BWP) of the SRS resource, a BWP of the SRS resource for positioning, a serving cell of the SRS resource, a serving cell of the SRS resource for positioning, a SL-PRS resource, a SL-PRS resource set, a transmission resource pool of the SL-PRS resource, a BWP of the SL-PRS resource, a serving cell of the SL-PRS resource, a DL-PRS resource, a DL-PRS resource set, a transmission reception point (TRP) of the DL-PRS resource, or a frequency layer of the DL-PRS resource. In some of these embodiments, when a consistent LBT failure of the RS or the RS transmission occurs, the transmitting node adjusts the priority or the channel access priority class (CAPC) of the RS or the RS transmission, and reattempts to transmit the RS according to the adjusting. In addition or alternatively, in some of these embodiments, the transmitting node may receive an indication of which priority or channel access priority class (CAPC) of which RS or RS transmission can be adjusted. In addition or alternatively, in some of these embodiments, the priority or the CAPC of the RS or the RS transmission is configured by the RAN node 204 to the user device 102, by a location management function (LMF) 202 to the RAN node 204, or by the LMF 202 to the user device 102. In addition or alternatively, in some embodiments, the priority or the CAPC of the RS or the RS transmission is reported by the RAN 204 node to the LMF 202.

[0028] In some embodiments of the method 300, the transmitting node determines a consistent LBT failure of a RS resource, a RS resource set, a transmission resource pool, a bandwidth part (BWP) , a serving cell, a TRP, or a frequency layer according to whether a priority or a channel access priority class (CAPC) is associated with the RS resource, the RS resource set, the transmission resource pool, the bandwidth part (BWP) , the serving cell, the TRP, or the frequency layer.

[0029] In some embodiments of the method 300, where the transmitting node includes the user device 102, the user device 102 determines at least one of: the LBT failure of the RS, the consistent LBT failure of the RS or a consistent LBT failure of a RS transmission in a physical layer.

[0030] In some embodiments of the method 300, the transmitting node determines the consistent LBT failure of the RS according to a first number of the LBT failure of the RS within a first time duration. In some of these embodiments, at least one of the first number, or the first time duration is associated with a priority or a channel access priority class (CAPC) of the RS.

[0031] In some embodiments of the method 300, the transmitting node determines the consistent LBT failure of the RS transmission according to a second number of the consistent LBT failure of the RS within a  second time duration. In some of these embodiments, at least one of the second number, or the second time duration is associated with a priority or a channel access priority class (CAPC) of the RS transmission.

[0032] In some embodiments of the method 300, at least one of the first number, the second number, the first time duration, or the second time duration is configured to the transmitting node by at least one of: the RAN node 204, the LMF 202, the user device 102, or the transmitting node is pre-configured with at least one of the first number, the second number, the first time duration, or the second time duration.

[0033] In some embodiments of the method 300 where the transmitting node includes the user device 102, the user device 102 reports a capability of a maximum value of the first number, the second number, the first time duration, or the second time duration.

[0034] In some embodiments of the method 300, the RS includes the SL-PRS resource, and when all non-periodically reserved SL-PRS instances of the SL-PRS experience a respective LBT failure, the SL-PRS is declared as having a consistent LBT failure.

[0035] In some embodiments of the method 300 where the transmitting node includes the user device 102, the RS transmission includes the transmission resource pool, and when the consistent LBT failure of the transmission resource pool occurs, the user device 102 switches a transmission resource pool that has a different priority, and transmits a SL-PRS within the transmission resource pool that has the different priority.

[0036] In some embodiments of the method 300 where the transmitting node includes the user device 102, the user device 102 reports the consistent LBT failure of the RS or the consistent LBT failure of the RS transmission to the RAN node 204, the LMF 202, or another user device 102. In some of these embodiments, the reporting includes at least one of: a RS resource identification (ID) , a RS resource set ID, a serving cell ID, a bandwidth part (BWP) ID, or a transmission resource pool ID. In addition or alternatively, in some of these embodiments, the RAN node 204 forwards the reporting to the LMF 202.

[0037] In some embodiments of the method 300, the transmitting node reports a RS configuration that the transmitting node wants to apply, where the RS configuration includes at least one of: a RS priority or a RS channel access priority class (CAPC) .

[0038] In some embodiments of the method 300 where the transmitting node includes the user device 102, the user device 102 reports a transmission resource pool configuration that the user device 102 wants to apply, and the transmission resource pool configuration includes at least one of: a priority or a CAPC of the transmission  resource pool, or a RS transmission scheme.

[0039] In some embodiments of the method 300, of claim 1, the LMF 202 requests to the RAN node 204 to configure the RS or a RS transmission having a channel access priority class (CAPC) that can be adjustable.

[0040] In some embodiments of the method 300, the transmitting node determines a RS transmission burst, where the RS transmission burst includes a plurality of RS instance transmissions of same or different RS resources that form a continuous transmission. In some of these embodiments, the RS transmission burst includes at least one of: a SL-PRS transmission burst, a DL-PRS transmission burst, a SRS transmission burst, or a SRS transmission burst for positioning. In addition or alternatively, in some of these embodiments, the transmitting node determines a channel access priority class (CAPC) of the RS transmission burst according to at least one of: a CAPC of a first RS instance transmission in the RS transmission burst, a highest CAPC of all RS instance transmissions in the RS transmission burst; or a lowest CAPC of all the RS instance transmissions in the RS transmission burst.

[0041] In some embodiments of the method 300, the transmitting node includes the RAN node 204, and the user device 102 determines a timer that is used to restrict a time between an uplink (UL) radio resource control (RRC) measurement gap (MG) request message for positioning and a next UL RRC MG request message for positioning. In some of these embodiments, a requested DL-PRS frequency within the UL RRC MG request message for positioning includes the DL-PRS frequency associated with the CAPC that can be adjusted. In addition or alternatively, in some of these embodiments, the timer is configured by the RAN node 204 to the user device 102.

[0042] In some embodiments of the method 300, the RS includes the DL-PRS, and when a consistent LBT failure of a DL-PRS or a consistent LBT failure of a DL-PRS transmission occurs, the RAN node 204 instructs to a user device 102 to stop receiving the DL-PRS or the DL-PRS transmission.

[0043] Further details, any of which may be included as part of, or incorporated into, the method 300, are now described.

[0044] In some embodiments, a user device 102 or a gNB 206 may transmit data or a reference signal via a Uu interface in a licensed band or an unlicensed band (also called shared spectrum) . Additionally, in some embodiments, a user device 102 may transmit data or a reference signal to another user device 102 via PC5 interface in sidelink communication. A UE can also transmit data or reference signal to another UE in sidelink licensed band or unlicensed band.

[0045] When transmitting a signal in the Uu or sidelink unlicensed band, a transmitting node (e.g. a user device 102 or a gNB 206) may perform listen-before-talk (LBT) before the transmission to determine whether target frequencies are busy or idle. The transmitting node may perform the transmission on the target frequencies to a receiving node if the target frequencies are detected as idle during LBT.

[0046] In addition, in some embodiments, a given LBT may have one of several types. A first type, called a Type-1 LBT, is a channel access procedure that is performed by a transmitting node based on a channel access priority class (CAPC) to determine a contention window size and the channel occupancy time. When a transmitting node performs Type-1 LBT successfully, the transmitting node may reserve the channel occupancy time (COT) for its transmission.

[0047] In a second type of LBT, called a Type-2 LBT, the transmitting node may perform a transmission immediately after sensing the channel to be idle for at least a sensing interval Tshort_dl. Additionally, a Type-2 LBT does not reserve the COT. Also, a Type-2 LBT itself may have three sub-types, including a Type-2A, Type-2B, and Type-2C. The three sub-types may differ from each other by having different lengths Tshort_dl.

[0048] A third type of LBT, called a Type-ALBT, is a multi-channel access procedure. Under the Type-A LBT, when a transmitting node wants to transmit a signal in a channel set that includes multiple channels, the transmitting node may perform a channel access procedure on every channel in the channel set, and transmit in the channels where LBT is successful. In some embodiments, the Type-ALBT includes multiple sub-types, including a Type-A1 LBT and a Type-A2 LBT.

[0049] A fourth type of LBT, called a Type-B LBT, is a multi-channel access procedure. Under the Type-B LBT, where a transmitting node wants to transmit a signal in a channel set that includes multiple channels, the transmitting node may perform a channel access procedure on one of the channels in the channel set, and perform a clear channel assessment (CCA) on the other channels. In some embodiments, the Type-B LBT includes multiple sub-types, including a Type B1 LBT and a Type-B2 LBT.

[0050] Additionally, in any of various embodiments, an LBT failure or the consistent LBT (C-LBT) failure is counted for all of the above-mentioned LBT types, or is counted for only certain (less than all) LBT types.

[0051] Additionally, in some embodiments, for multi-round trip time (RTT) positioning in an unlicensed band, for transmission of a downlink positioning reference signal (DL-PRS) , a gNB 206 may initiate a Type-1 LBT procedure to initiate a COT. Then, the COT may be shared to a user device 102 for the user device’s 102 sounding reference signal (SRS) transmission.

[0052] In addition, in some embodiments, for multi-RTT positioning in an unlicensed band, for transmission of a sounding reference signal (SRS) , a user device 102 may initiate a Type-1 LBT procedure to initiate a COT. Then, the COT may be shared to a gNB 206 for the gNB’s 206 DL-PRS transmission.

[0053] Additionally, as used herein, a sidelink positioning reference signal (SL-PRS) instance includes at least one of: a SL-PRS resource in a single slot, or a SL-PRS transmission instance of a periodical SL-PRS resource, or a SL-PRS resource with certain time domain, frequency domain and code domain resource that is allocated by the network device 104 or another user device 102, or is allocated by the transmitting user device 102 itself, or is allocated by pre-configuration.

[0054] Additionally, for at least some embodiments, a SL-PRS transmission may be performed according to one of at least two schemes. In a first scheme (Scheme 1) , a transmitting user device 102 may receive a SL-PRS resource allocation signaling from the network 104. In a second scheme (Scheme 2) , a transmitting user device 102 may use sensing-based resource selection to determine the SL-PRS resource allocation.

[0055] Additionally, for at least some embodiments, a SL-PRS transmission may be performed according to one or more of the following under Scheme 1 and / or Scheme 2. For SL-PRS transmissions with a periodic reservation, SL-PRS transmissions are reserved with a similar mechanism as the sidelink (SL) periodic resource reservation for another transport block (TB) in SL communication. For SL-PRS transmissions without a periodic reservation, an SL-PRS is transmitted at least once without periodic reservation. FIG. 4 shows a schematic diagram of SL-PRS transmission with and without periodic reservation.

[0056] Additionally, in sidelink communication, a user device 102 may be configured by a serving gNB 206, pre-configured, or configured by another user device 102 with a transmission resource pool (s) and / or a corresponding SL-PRS configuration. A transmission resource pool may be a dedicated resource pool for SL-PRS transmission, or resource pools that SL-PRS and SL data can both be transmitted. A SL-PRS configuration may include at least one of the following: SL bandwidth parts (BWPs) , SL serving cells, SL-PRS resource sets, or SL-PRS resources. Additionally, a SL-PRS may be periodic, semi-persistent, or aperiodic. If it is periodic or semi-persistent, the periodicity may be configured by the network device 104, or determined by the transmitting user device 102 itself. Also, each SL-PRS instance may be configured or include with one or more symbols. Such a configuration may be part of Scheme 1 and / or Scheme 2 described above for SL-PRS transmissions.

[0057] Additionally, in some embodiments, a SL-PRS instance of a SL-PRS resource may indicate different time domain and / or frequency domain resources of the SL-PRS resource. The SL-PRS instance may  be an instance of a non-periodically reserved time domain and / or frequency domain resource for the SL-PRS, or a periodically reserved time domain resource and / or frequency domain resource for the SL-PRS.

[0058] In addition, in some embodiments, a user device 102 may send a sidelink control information (SCI) to schedule a SL-PRS transmission or a SL-PRS transmission burst. In one example, if the SCI and SL-PRS are transmitted both in an unlicensed band and if the SCI and a scheduled SL-PRS instance is within a slot but have a time gap of several symbols, and the time gap does not contain a PSSCH, the user device 102 may perform two LBT procedures, a first LBT procedure for the former SCI, and a second LBT procedure for the latter SL-PRS instance. FIG. 5 is a timing diagram illustrating an example of this. The SL-PRS instance may be successfully sent if the two LBT procedures are both successful. Otherwise, if at least one of the LBT procedures fails, the SL-PRS instance fails to send.

[0059] Additionally, in some embodiments, a user device 102 may perform a LBT before the SL-PRS transmission on the target frequencies (e.g., at least one resource block (RB) ) of the SL-PRS transmission. One or more criterion may be used to determine whether the LBT is successful. For example, if one or more dedicated RB sets of a SL-PRS instance is sensed as idle, the LBT may be considered to be successful, and in turn, the user device 102 may transmit the SL-PRS instance on the idle channel / RB sets. Also, for at least some embodiments, for one SL-PRS transmission, a failure of a SL-PRS instance to be sent due to a LBT failure is referred to as a SL-PRS LBT failure. This indicates that the granularity of an LBT failure detection or determination corresponds to a SL-PRS instance (which may include multiple RB sets in the frequency domain) , rather than corresponding to a RB set. Also, for at least some embodiments, a RB set may have the bandwidth of 20 MegaHertz (MHz) .

[0060] In addition, as used herein, the term ‘Fail to send’ may also include a case where a LBT is successful after a SL-PRS instance starts, such as after several symbols.

[0061] Also, in some embodiments, SL-PRS instances may be counted for SL-PRS C-LBT failures. In such cases, a SL-PRS instance may include at least one of: one or more periodically reserved SL-PRS instances of the SL-PRS, or one or more non-periodically reserved SL-PRS instances of the SL-PRS.

[0062] In addition, in at least some embodiments, a priority or a channel access priority class (CAPC) is configured or associated with at least one of: a SL-PRS resource, a SL-PRS resource set, a transmission resource pool, a SL-BWP, or a SL-serving cell. The C-LBT failure detection level or granularity may be on the order of at least one of: a SL-PRS resource, a SL-PRS resource set, a transmission resource pool, a SL-BWP, or a SL- serving cell. In other embodiments, the priority level and C-LBT failure detection level are the same. For example, if the CAPC is associated with each SL-PRS resource, the C-LBT failure detection level / granularity should also be per SL-PRS.

[0063] In addition, in some embodiments, the priority or the CAPC of a SL-PRS, and / or the C-LBT failure detection level, may be configured by a gNB 206 to a user device 102, such as via radio resource control (RRC) messages, a medium access control (MAC) control element (CE) , or a downlink control information (DCI) , or may be configured by another user device 102 to the user device 102, such as via sidelink control information (SCI) , a sidelink (SL) MAC CE, a PC5-RRC, or a sidelink positioning protocol (SLPP) message, or the user device 102 may be pre-configured with the priority or CAPC of the SL-PRS.

[0064] Additionally, for at least some embodiments, the C-LBT failure detection level that a user device 102 supports may also be a UE capability. This UE capability may be reported to the network 104 or to another user device 102.

[0065] In addition, in some embodiments, one SL-PRS resource may be configured to have multiple SL-PRS instances periodically. In event that, for the one SL-PRS resource, a SL-PRS LBT failure happens over X times during a time period T, then the user device 102 may assume the SL-PRS resource suffers from a SL-PRS consistent LBT failure (SL-PRS C-LBT failure) . In other words, X is the number of SL-PRS instances that fail to transmit due to LBT failure. In any of various embodiments, the X value and the time period T value may be configured and / or indicated by a gNB 206, the LMF 202, or another user device 102. In addition or alternatively, the X value and / or the time period T value may be configured differently or separately from another X value and / or another time period T that is included in a SL-U transmission or NR-U transmission. Also, in any of various embodiments, the maximum X value and / or the maximum time period T value may be UE capabilities reported in advance.

[0066] In addition or alternatively, the X value and / or the time period T value may be associated with the SL-PRS resource priority, or with the SL-PRS CAPC value. In particular of these embodiments, the SL-PRS with a higher priority is configured with larger time period T and / or X value, such as because the SL-PRS with the higher priority is to be guaranteed to transmit as much as possible. In other particular of these embodiments, the SL-PRS with a higher priority is configured with a smaller time period T and / or X value, such as because C-LBT failures for SL-PRSs with a higher priority are to be determined more readily, so that the network 104 may change the configuration more quickly. In some other embodiments, in event that all non-periodically reserved SL-PRS instances of a SL-PRS occur with a SL-PRS LBT failure, the SL-PRS may be declared as having a SL- PRS C-LBT failure. In such other embodiments, the SL-PRS LBT failure detection may not be restricted during the configured or fixed time period T.

[0067] Additionally, in some embodiments, one SL-PRS resource set may include one or more the SL-PRS resources. Based on the resource level of a C-LBT failure, if a certain A%of SL-PRS resources within a SL-PRS resource set have a SL-PRS C-LBT failure, the SL-PRS resource set is considered as having a resource set C-LBT failure. Here, the value A is the percentage of the number of the SL-PRS resources within a SL-PRS resource set that have a C-LBT failure. Also, A may be an integer larger than zero and smaller than or equal to one hundred. A equal to 100 means that the SL-PRS resource set is considered as having a resource set level C-LBT failure if all of the configured SL-PRS resource (s) within a SL-PRS resource set have a DL-PRS C-LBT failure. In any of various embodiments, the value of A for a user device 102 may be configured by the network 104 or by another user device 102, or user device 102 may be pre-configured with the value A, such as in accordance with, or as pre-defined or fixed in, the specification.

[0068] Additionally, in some embodiments, the X value for determining a SL-PRS C-LBT failure may be configured to be the same for each SL-PRS resource within a SL-PRS resource set, and / or the time period T value for determining a SL-PRS C-LBT failure may be configured to be the same for each SL-PRS resource within a SL-PRS resource set.

[0069] Additionally, in some embodiments, different SL-PRS resource sets may be associated with different priorities or CAPCs. According to the different priorities or CAPCs, different SL-PRS resource sets may have different X values, different time T values, and / or different A values from each other.

[0070] Additionally, in some embodiments, based on the resource level SL-PRS C-LBT failure, there may be one or more transmission resource pool (s) configured for a transmitting user device 102. For such embodiments, the transmitting user device 102 may transmit a SL-PRS within the transmission resource pool (s) . Also, a given transmission resource pool may be a dedicated resource pool for a SL-PRS, or may be joint resource pool for both the SL-PRS and the SL communication. In any of various embodiments, there may be a SL-PRS configuration associated with the transmission resource pool (s) , and / or a SL-PRS configuration may include one or more SL-PRS resources.

[0071] Additionally, in some embodiments, if A%of SL-PRS resources within a transmission resource pool have a SL-PRS C-LBT failure, the transmission resource pool is considered as having a resource pool C-LBT failure. In such embodiments, the value A is the percentage of the number of the SL-PRS resources within  a resource pool that have a C-LBT failure. Also, the A value may be an integer larger than zero and smaller than or equal to one hundred. Where A equals 100, the transmission resource pool is considered as having a resource pool C-LBT failure if all of the configured SL-PRS resource (s) within a transmission resource pool has a SL-PRS C-LBT failure. In any of various embodiments, the value of A for a user device 102 may be configured by the 104 network or by another user device 102, or the user device 102 may be preconfigured with the A value, as pre-defined or as fixed in the specification. Additionally, in such embodiments, the X value for determining SL-PRS C-LBT failure may be configured to be the same for each SL-PRS resource within a transmission resource pool, and / or the time period T value for determining SL-PRS C-LBT failure may be configured to be the same for each SL-PRS resource within a transmission resource pool. In addition or alternatively, different transmission resource pools may be associated with different priorities or CAPCs. According to the different priorities or CAPCs, different transmission resource pools may have different X values, different time period T values, and / or different A values. In addition or alternatively, resource pools may instead by sidelink (SL) -bandwidth parts (BWP) or SL-serving cells. In addition or alternatively, the SL-BWP may also be a SL frequency layer to define a frequency range of the SL-PRS.

[0072] Additionally, in some embodiments, a user device 102 may can detect whether a LBT failure or a C-LBT failure happens in the physical (PHY) layer or in the medium access control (MAC) layer. In particular of these embodiments, for the above resource level / resource set level / resource pool / SL-BWP / SL-serving cell level C-LBT failure, the user device 102 may set a counter for counting the X value and / or the A value during the time period T. In some embodiments, the user device 102 may perform the counting in its PHY layer or in the MAC layer. For embodiments where counting is performed in the PHY layer, the user device’s PHY layer counts each SL-PRS LBT failure as one. If the SL-PRS C-LBT failure / resource pool / SL-BWP / SL-serving cell C-LBT failure is detected by the PHY layer, the user device’s 102 PHY layer determines that the SL-PRS C-LBT failure / resource pool / SL-BWP / SL-serving cell C-LBT failure occurs. In addition, for embodiments where counting is performed in the MAC layer, the user device’s 102 PHY layer may report to the MAC layer each time a SL-PRS LBT failure happens. If a SL-PRS C-LBT failure / resource pool / SL-BWP / SL-serving cell C-LBT failure is detected by the MAC layer, the user device’s 102 MAC layer may determine that the SL-PRS C-LBT failure / resource pool / SL-BWP / SL-serving cell C-LBT failure occurs.

[0073] Additionally, in some embodiments, in response to a C-LBT failure occurring or being detected, a user device 102 may perform at least one of the following: drop the transmission of the associated SL-PRS, try to transmit other configured SL-PRSs, change a transmission resource pool, change a SL-BWP, change a SL- serving cell, or report to the network 104 or another user device 102 that a C-LBT failure has occurred. The report message may indicate that the reported SL-PRS or resource pool should be re-configured or changed.

[0074] Additionally, in some embodiments, the report may include at least one of: a SL-PRS resource identification or identifier (ID) , a SL-PRS resource set ID, a serving cell ID, a BWP ID, or a resource pool ID, to indicate which SL-PRS resource / SL-PRS resource sets / resource pool / SL-BWP / SL-serving cell has experienced a C-LBT failure. Additionally, in some embodiments, the user device 102 may report each time that a C-LBT failure happens, or the user device 102 may report several C-LBT failures at one time. In other embodiments, the user device 102 may report to the gNB 206 or to one or more other user devices 102 the SL-PRS configuration and / or the resource pool configuration that the user devices 102 wants to apply. The SL-PRS configuration may include at least one of: a SL-PRS priority, a SL-PRS CAPC, a SL-PRS periodicity, a SL-PRS bandwidth, a SL-PRS resource repetition factor, a SL-PRS symbol number, or SL-PRS comb size. Also, the resource pool configuration may include at least one of: a sidelink subchannel size, a number of subchannels, a start RB of the subchannel, a time domain resource of a resource pool, or the priority or the CAPC of the resource pool.

[0075] In other embodiments, the user device 102 may report to the network 104 or another user device 102 the LBT parameter that the user device 102 wants to apply. The LBT parameter may include at least one of the following parameters: a LBT type, a COT duration, a COT offset, or a CAPC value.

[0076] In any of various embodiments, the report message that the user device 102 reports may also be from the LMF 202 to a gNB 206, such as via a New Radio Positioning Protocol A (NRPPa) message. Furthermore, a gNB 206 may reply to the LMF 202 to the reporting via a NRPPa message.

[0077] Additionally, in any of various embodiments, the report may be transmitted to the network 104 via uplink control information (UCI) , an UL MAC CE, an UL RRC message, or a LTE positioning protocol (LPP) message. In additionally, in any of various embodiments, the report may be transmitted to another user device, such as via SLPP message, PC5-RRC message, SL MAC CE or SCI.

[0078] In other embodiments, the user device 102 may notify another user device 102 to stop monitoring and / or receiving the SL-PRS associated with the C-LBT that has occurred. The C-LBT of a SL-PRS may include at least one of: a SL-PRS C-LBT failure, a SL-PRS resource set C-LBT failure, a resource pool C-LBT failure, a SL BWP C-LBT failure, or a SL serving cell C-LBT failure. In any of various embodiments, the signaling to stop monitoring and / or receiving may be transmitted in a licensed band. Also, in any of various embodiments,  the signaling to stop monitoring and / or receiving may include at least one of: PC5-RRC signaling, a SL MAC CE, a SCI, or a SLPP message. In addition or alternatively, the signaling to stop monitoring and / or receiving may include at least one of: a SL-PRS resource ID, a SL-PRS resource set ID, a transmission resource pool ID, a BWP ID, or a serving cell ID.

[0079] In addition, in some embodiments, when the transmission resource pool is configured to the user device 102 (e.g., via a gNB 206, pre-configuration, or another user device 102) , the user device 102 may perform sensing and selection to choose a SL-PRS resource to transmit, such as in Scheme 2 identified above. In such embodiments, when the SL-PRS is transmitted in the shared spectrum, the user device 102 may perform LBT before the final selected SL-PRS resource. If LBT is successful, then the user device 102 may perform the SL-PRS transmission.

[0080] Additionally, in some embodiments for Scheme 2 identified above, the SL-PRS reservation period (similar as SL-PRS periodicity) may be determined by the transmitting user device 102. In other embodiments, there is no SL-PRS reservation period for the SL-PRS. In either embodiment, the user device 102 may detect the C-LBT failure.

[0081] Additionally, in some embodiments, in event that the user device 102 determines or detects a resource pool C-LBT failure, the user device 102 may indicate the resource pool C-LBT failure to the gNB 206 or to another user device 102 to change a transmission resource pool configuration, or to change a SL -PRS transmission scheme (e.g., Scheme 1 and Scheme 2) . In other embodiments, each transmission resource pool is associated with a priority or a CAPC. When a resource pool with a priority is associated with a C-LBT failure, the user device 102 may switch to a transmission resource pool that has a lower priority, a higher priority, or an equal priority, then try to transmit. For at least some embodiments, the association between priority and transmission resource pool is configured to the user device 102 by a gNB 206, another user device 102, or via a pre-configuration. In addition or alternatively, the priority may be the CAPC of each pool.

[0082] Additionally, in some embodiments, when a user device 102 sends a SL-PRS to one or more other user devices 102 in an unlicensed band, the user device 102 may perform LBT before the SL-PRS transmission. Because the LBT may fail, it is possible that the SL-PRS instance may not be successfully transmitted. In event that the user device 102 performs LBT a certain number of times per SL-PRS, and then drops the SL-PRS if the certain number of LBTs fail (meaning that an associated SL-PRS has experienced a C-LBT failure) , the user device 102 may not receive and / or measure adequate SL-PRS to form a good measurement result. In order to increase the LBT success rate to, in turn, allow the user device 102 to acquire an adequate SL-PRS measurement  result, if a C-LBT failure happens when the user device 102 transmits a SL-PRS, the user device 102 may adjust the priority or the CAPC of the SL-PRS, then try to transmit again. In particular of these embodiments, the user device 102 may increase the priority value or the CAPC value of the SL-PRS and try a Type-1 LBT again. In any of various embodiments, the priority or the CAPC of the SL-PRS may be associated per SL-PRS resource, per SL-PRS resource set, per resource pool, per SL-BWP, per serving cell, or any combination thereof.

[0083] Additionally, in some embodiments, the LMF 202, a gNB 206, or another user device 102 may indicate to the transmitting user device 102 which SL-PRS transmission’s priority or CAPC can be adjusted. In other embodiments, the transmitting user device 102 may be preconfigured to know which SL-PRS transmission’s priority or CAPC can be adjusted. In these indication signaling or in the pre-configuration, a SL-PRS transmission may include at least one of: a SL-PRS resource, a SL-PRS resource set, a SL-PRS configuration resource pool, a SL-BWP, SL serving cell.

[0084] Additionally, in some embodiments, the LMF 202 may request a gNB 206 to configure the SL-PRS such that the CAPC can be adjustable.

[0085] Also, in sidelink positioning, a SCI may schedule a SL-PRS transmission. In event that the SCI and the scheduled SL-PRS are not continuous, such that there is a time gap between them, the user device 102 may perform LBT twice for the SL-PRS transmission. In order to reduce the number of LBTs, the user device 102 may schedule the SL-PRS with a highest priority or CAPC to be continuous with the scheduled SCI.

[0086] Additionally, in some embodiments a downlink positioning reference signal (DL-PRS) transmission, a DL-PRS transmission burst, or a DL transmission burst that includes a DL-PRS transmission may be performed. For at least some of these embodiments, in Uu positioning, for DL-time difference of arrival (TDOA) , DL-angle of departure (AoD) , and / or multi-round trip time (RTT) positioning methods, a DL-PRS is periodical and is transmitted by a gNB 206. One DL-PRS transmission within a DL-PRS period is called a DL-PRS instance. Also, different DL-PRS may have different periodicities from each other. In addition or alternatively, different DL-PRS may belong to different frequency layers. Each gNB 206 may transmit multiple DL-PRS resources or DL-PRS resource sets to a user device 102 in one positioning session. Also, in any of various embodiments, multiple gNBs 206 may transmit their own DL-PRSs to a same user device 102 during one positioning session.

[0087] Additionally, in some embodiments, when a gNB 206 sends a DL-PRS to a user device 102 in an unlicensed band, the gNB 206 may perform LBT before the DL-PRS transmission, such as, perform LBT before  each DL-PRS instance in one DL-PRS resource, or perform LBT before each DL transmission burst that contains a DL-PRS or a reference signal (RS) transmission burst. As used herein, a DL-PRS instance that fails to be sent due to a LBT failure is called a DL-PRS LBT failure.

[0088] Additionally, the term ‘Fail to send’a lso includes a case that a LBT is successful after a DL-PRS instance starts, such as after several symbols.

[0089] Additionally, for a DL-PRS, a priority value and / or a CAPC value may be associated with or configured to at least one of: a DL-PRS resource, a DL-PRS resource set, a TRP, or a frequency layer. Also, for at least some embodiments, for a DL-PRS, the C-LBT failure detection level / granularity may be at least one of: a DL-PRS resource, a DL-PRS resource set, a TRP, or frequency layer. In other embodiments, the above priority level and C-LBT failure detection level for a DL-PRS are the same.

[0090] Additionally, in some embodiments, the priority or the CAPC of a DL-PRS, or the C-LBT failure detection level for a DL-PRS may be configured by the LMF 202 to the gNB 106, such as via NRPPa messages, or may be determined by the gNB 206 itself. Also, in some embodiments, the priority or the CAPC of a DL-PRS may be provided from the gNB 206 to the LMF 202, such as via NRPPa signalings.

[0091] Additionally, in some embodiments, one DL-PRS resource may be configured to have multiple DL-PRS instances periodically. For the one DL-PRS resource, in event that a DL-PRS LBT failure happens over X times during a time period T, then the gNB 206 may assume or determine that the DL-PRS resource suffers from or has experienced a DL-PRS resource consistent LBT failure (DL-PRS C-LBT failure) . In other words, the X value is the number of DL-PRS instances that fail to transmit due to LBT failure. In some embodiments, the X value and / or the time period T value may be configured and / or indicated by the LMF 202. In other embodiments, the X value and the time period T value may be associated with the DL-PRS resource priority, or with the DL-PRS CAPC value. In some embodiments, different DL-PRS resource priorities or different CAPCs may be associated with different X values and / or time period T values.

[0092] Additionally, in some embodiments, one DL-PRS resource set may include one or more DL-PRS resources. Based on the resource level of a C-LBT failure, if A%of DL-PRS resources within a DL-PRS resource set have a DL-PRS C-LBT failure, the DL-PRS resource set is considered to have a resource set C-LBT failure. Here, the value A is the percentage of the number of the DL-PRS resources within a DL-PRS resource set that have a C-LBT failure, where A is an integer larger than zero and smaller than or equal to one hundred. If A is equal to 100, the DL-PRS resource set is considered as having a resource set level C-LBT failure if all of the  configured DL-PRS resource (s) within a DL-PRS resource set have a DL-PRS C-LBT failure. Also, in any of various embodiments, the value of A may be configured by the LMF 202, or the devices may be preconfigured with the A value, such as it is pre-defined or fixed in the specification.

[0093] Also, in some embodiments, the X value for determining a DL-PRS C-LBT failure may be the same for each DL-PRS resource within a DL-PRS resource set, and / or the time period T value for determining a DL-PRS C-LBT failure may be configured to be the same for each DL-PRS resource within a DL-PRS resource set.

[0094] Also, in some embodiments, different DL-PRS resource sets may be associated with different priorities or CAPCs. According to the different priorities or CAPCs, different DL-PRS resource sets may have different X values, different time period T values, or different A values from each other.

[0095] Additionally, in some embodiments, one TRP 208 may include one or more DL-PRS resource sets or DL-PRS resources. Based on the resource level of a C-LBT failure, if A%of DL-PRS resources within a TRP 208 have a DL-PRS C-LBT failure, the TRP 208 is considered as having a TRP C-LBT failure, where the value A is the percentage of the number of the DL-PRS resources within a TRP 208 that have a C-LBT failure, and where A is an integer larger than zero and smaller than or equal to one hundred. If A is equal to 100, the TRP 208 is considered as having a TRP level C-LBT failure if all of the configured DL-PRS resource (s) within a TRP 208 have a DL-PRS C-LBT failure. The value of A can be configured by the LMF 202, or the devices may be preconfigured with the A value, such as it is pre-defined or fixed in the specification, in any of various embodiments.

[0096] Also, in some embodiments, the X value for determining a DL-PRS C-LBT failure may be the same for each DL-PRS resource within a TRP 208, and / or the time period T value for determining DL-PRS C-LBT failure may be the same for each DL-PRS resource within a TRP 208. Also, in any of various embodiments, different TRPs 208 may be associated with different priorities or CAPCs. According to the different priorities or CAPCs, different TRPs 208 may have different X values, different time period T values, and / or different A values from each other.

[0097] Additionally, in some embodiments, a frequency layer may restrict the frequency range of the DL-PRS, where each frequency layer may include one or more DL-PRS resources. Based on the resource level C-LBT failure, if A%of DL-PRS resources within a frequency layer have a DL-PRS C-LBT failure, the frequency layer is considered as having a frequency layer C-LBT failure, where the value A is the percentage of the number of the DL-PRS resources within a frequency layer that have a C-LBT failure, and where A is an integer larger  than zero and smaller than or equal to one hundred. If A is equal to 100, the frequency layer is considered as having a frequency layer level C-LBT failure if all of the configured DL-PRS resource (s) within a frequency layer have a DL-PRS C-LBT failure. Also, in any of various embodiments, the value of A may be configured by the LMF 202, or may be pre-configured with the devices, such as it is pre-defined or fixed in the specification.

[0098] Also, in some embodiments, the X value for determining a DL-PRS C-LBT failure may be the same for each DL-PRS resource within a frequency layer, and / or the time period T value for determining a DL-PRS C-LBT failure may be the same for each DL-PRS resource within a frequency layer. In addition or alternatively, different frequency layers may be associated with different priorities or CAPCs. According to the different priorities or CAPCs, different frequency layers may have different X values, or different time period T value, and / or different A values from each other.

[0099] Additionally, in some embodiments, if a C-LBT failure associated with a DL-PRS occurs, a gNB 206 may perform at least one of the following: drop the associated DL-PRS transmission, try to transmit other configured DL-PRSs, change the DL-PRS resource set or frequency layer, or report to the LMF 202 or a user device 102 that a C-LBT failure has occurred.

[0100] Additionally, in some embodiments, if a C-LBT failure of a DL-PRS transmission occurs, the gNB 206 may instruct or notify a user device 102 to stop monitoring and / or receiving the DL-PRS. The C-LBT of a DL-PRS may include at least one of: a DL-PRS C-LBT failure, a DL-PRS resource set C-LBT failure, a TRP C-LBT failure, or a frequency layer C-LBT failure. Also, in some embodiments, signaling used to stop the monitoring and / or receiving may be sent in a licensed band. In addition or alternatively, the signaling to stop the monitoring and / or receiving may be at least one of: DL RRC signaling, a DL MAC CE, a DCI, or a paging message. In addition or alternatively, the signaling to stop the monitoring and / or receiving may include at least one of: a DL-PRS resource ID, a DL-PRS resource set ID, a TRP ID, or a frequency layer ID.

[0101] In other embodiments, a gNB 206 does not notify the user device 102 if the DL-PRS is successful or not. In turn, the user device 102 may try to receive all of the configured DL-PRS.

[0102] In addition or alternatively, in some embodiments, a gNB 206 may indicate to the LMF 202 a C-LBT failure of a DL-PRS transmission. For at least some of these embodiments, the indication may include at least one of: a DL-PRS resource C-LBT failure, a resource set C-LBT failure, a TRP C-LBT failure, or a frequency layer C-LBT failure. In addition or alternatively, in some embodiments, the report may include at least one of: a DL-PRS resource ID, a DL-PRS resource set ID, a TRP ID, or a frequency layer ID, to indicate  which DL-PRS resource / DL-PRS resource sets / TRP / frequency layer has experienced or is associated with a C-LBT failure. Also, in some embodiments, the gNB 206 may report each time when a C-LBT failure occurs, or the gNB 206 may report several C-LBT failures at one time. In addition or alternatively, the gNB 206 may send a changing DL-PRS configuration request to the LMF 202 when the gNB 206 experiences a C-LBT failure issue. In other embodiments, the gNB 206 may update the DL-PRS configuration itself when the gNB 206 experiences a C-LBT failure issue and sends it to the LMF 202 for update. The changing DL-PRS configuration request may include at least one of: a DL-PRS priority, a DL-PRS CAPC, a DL-PRS periodicity, a DL-PRS bandwidth, a DL-PRS resource repetition factor, a DL-PRS symbol number, or DL-PRS comb size. Also, the priority or CAPC may be per DL-PRS resource / resource set / TRP / frequency layer level.

[0103] In other embodiments, the LMF 202 may request the gNB 206 to configure a DL-PRS when a C-LBT failure of DL-PRS occurs. The DL-PRS configuration may include at least one of: a DL-PRS priority, a DL-PRS CAPC, a DL-PRS periodicity, a DL-PRS bandwidth, a DL-PRS resource repetition factor, a DL-PRS symbol number, or a DL-PRS comb size. In still other embodiments, the LMF 202 may provide and / or recommend to the gNB 206 at least one suitable LBT parameter, which may include at least one of: a LBT type, a COT duration, a COT offset, or a CAPC. Also, in any of various embodiments, the report may be transmitted from the gNB 206 to the LMF 202 via a NRPPa message.

[0104] Additionally, in some embodiments, when a gNB 206 sends a DL-PRS to a user device 102 in an unlicensed band, the gNB 206 may perform LBT before the DL-PRS transmission. Because the LBT may fail, the DL-PRS instance may not be successfully transmitted. If the gNB 206 tries LBT a certain number of times per DL-PRS and then drops the DL-PRS if the certain number of LBTs fail (meaning a C-LBT failure associated with the DL-PRS has occurred) , the user device 102 may not receive and / or measure adequate DL-PRS to form a good measurement result. In order to increase the LBT success rate so that the user device 102 may acquire an adequate DL-PRS measurement result, in event that a C-LBT failure happens when the gNB 206 transmits a DL-PRS, the gNB 206 may adjust the priority or the CAPC of the DL-PRS, and then try to transmit again. In particular of these embodiments, the gNB 206 may increase the priority value or the CAPC value of the DL-PRS and a try Type-1 LBT again. Also, in any of various embodiments, the priority or CAPC of the DL-PRS may be associated per DL-PRS resource, per DL-PRS resource set, per frequency layer, per TRP, or any combination thereof.

[0105] Also, in some embodiments, the LMF 202 may indicate to the gNB 206 which DL-PRS’s CAPCs may be adjusted. The LMF 202 may request the gNB 206 to configure some DL-PRS whose CAPC can be  adjusted. The gNB 206 may respond to the LMF 202 with which DL-PRS’s CAPCs can be adjusted. The gNB 206 may also decide the DL-PRS that can adjust the CAPC by itself. In these signalings, the DL-PRS may include at least one of: a DL-PRS resource, a DL-PRS resource set, a DL-PRS configuration per TRP, or DL-PRS configuration per frequency layer.

[0106] Additionally, in some embodiments, a user device 102 may measure a DL-PRS in (e.g., only in) a measurement gap configured by the network 104. The user device 102 may send an UL RRC message to request a measurement gap configuration in order to measure at least one DL-PRS. In some embodiments, a timer is used to restrict or prohibit time between a user device’s 102 one UL RRC MG request message for positioning and a next UL RRC MG request message for positioning. The timer may start when the user device 102 sends one UL RRC MG request message to the network 104 for one or more PRS frequencies. Also, the one or more PRS frequencies are the one or more frequencies in which the CAPC may be adjusted. When the timer is running, the user device 102 may not be allowed to transmit a next request UL RRC MG request. The timer may stop when the user device 102 receives a wanted or target DL-PRS within the timer (i.e., before the timer stops or has elapsed) . When the timer stops, the user device 102 may send another UL RRC MG request.

[0107] Also, in some embodiments, the gNB 206 may not try to perform LBT to transmit a C-LBT DL-PRS indefinitely. In that end, a timer may be used to restrict the maximum time that the gNB 206 may adjust a DL-PRS priority and try to transmit the DL-PRS. If the timer expires and the gNB 206 has not yet performed a successful LBT, the gNB 206 may drop any remaining DL-PRS transmission attempts. For at least some of these embodiments, the DL-PRS includes at least one of: a DL-PRS resource, a DL-PRS resource set, a DL-PRS configuration per TRP, or a DL-PRS configuration per frequency layer.

[0108] Additionally, in some embodiments, a sounding reference signal (SRS) transmission, a SRS transmission burst, or an UL transmission burst that includes a SRS transmission may be performed. For at least some of these embodiments, the SRS transmission may include at least one of a SRS transmission with configured usage or a SRS transmission for positioning.

[0109] Additionally, in some embodiments, a user device 102 may be configured by a serving gNB 206 with a SRS configuration to send. In any of various embodiments, the SRS configuration may include at least one of: one or more SRS resources, one or more SRS resource sets, one or more SRS resources for positioning, or one or more SRS resource sets for positioning. Also, in any of various embodiments, the SRS may be aperiodic, semi-persistent, or periodic. In some embodiments, if the user device 102 is configured to send the SRS in an unlicensed band, the user device 102 may perform LBT before the SRS transmission, such as by performing  LBT before each SRS instance in one SRS resource, or perform LBT before each UL transmission burst that includes a SRS, or before each RS transmission burst. A SRS instance that fail to be sent due to a LBT failure is referred to herein as a SRS LBT failure.

[0110] Additionally, the term ‘Fail to send’ with respect to a SRS transmission includes the case where a LBT is successful after a scheduled SRS instance starts.

[0111] Also, a priority or a CAPC value may be associated and / or configured with at least one of: a SRS resource, a SRS resource set, a BWP, or a serving cell. Additionally, in some embodiments, the C-LBT failure detection level or granularity may be at least one of: a SRS resource, a SRS resource set, a BWP, or serving cell. In other embodiments, the above priority level and C-LBT failure detection level are the same.

[0112] Additionally, in some embodiments, the priority or the CAPC of a SRS, or the C-LBT failure detection level may be configured or requested by the LMF 202 to the gNB 206, such as via NRPPa messages, may be reported from the gNB 206 to the LMF 202, such as via NRPPa signaling, or may be instructed or notified from the gNB 206 to the user device 102, such as via RRC signaling, a MAC CE, or DCI.

[0113] Also, in some embodiments, an UL transmission includes at least one of: an UL data transmission or a SRS transmission. In some procedures, a C-LBT failure is counted per UL BWP. This means that irrespective of whether the UL data transmission or SRS transmission on the UL BWP has a LBT failure and reaches a criteria, the UL BWP is declared as having a C-LBT failure. However, the positioning service may be counted separately with UL data, i.e., a counter only counts a SRS LBT failure to see whether a SRS transmission or a SRS transmission for positioning reaches the C-LBT failure criteria. In particular of these embodiments, at least one of the following cases is implemented.

[0114] Additionally, in some embodiments, one SRS resource may be configured to have multiple SRS instances transmitted periodically. If for this SRS resource, a SRS LBT failure happens over X times during a time period T, then the user device 102 may assume the SRS resource has experienced or suffers from a SRS consistent LBT failure (SRS C-LBT failure) . In other words, the value X is the number of SRS instances that fail to transmit due to a LBT failure. In some embodiments, the X value and / or the time period T value may be configured and / or indicated by the gNB 206 or the LMF 202. Also, in some embodiments, the maximum X value and / or maximum time period T value may be UE capabilities that are reported in advance. In other embodiments, the X value and / or the time period T value may be associated with a SRS resource priority, or with a SRS CAPC value. Different SRS resource priorities or CAPC values may be associated with different X  values and / or time period T values.

[0115] Additionally, in some embodiments, one SRS resource set may include one or more SRS resources. Based on the resource level of a C-LBT failure, if A%of SRS resources within a SRS resource set has a SRS C-LBT failure, the SRS resource set is considered as having a resource set C-LBT failure, where the value A is the percentage of the number of the SRS resources within a SRS resource set that has a C-LBT failure, and where A is a value (e.g., an integer) larger than zero and smaller than or equal to one hundred. If A is equal to 100, the SRS resource set is considered as having a resource set level C-LBT failure if all of the configured SRS resource (s) within a SRS resource set have a SRS C-LBT failure. Also, in some of these embodiments, the value of A may be configured by the network 104 to the user device 102, or the user device 102 may be preconfigured with the value A, such as it is pre-defined and / or fixed in the specification.

[0116] Additionally, in some embodiments, the X value for determining a SRS C-LBT failure may be the same for each SRS resource within a SRS resource set, and / or the time period T value for determining a SRS C-LBT failure may be the same for each SRS resource within a SRS resource set. Additionally, in some embodiments, different SRS resource sets may be associated with different priorities or CAPCs. According to the different priorities or CAPCs, different SRS resource sets may have different X values, different time period T values, and / or different A values from each other.

[0117] Additionally, in some embodiments, one BWP may include one or more SRS resource sets or SRS resources. Based on the resource level C-LBT failure, if A%of SRS resources within a BWP have a SRS C-LBT failure, the BWP is considered as having a BWP C-LBT failure, where A is the percentage of the number of the SRS resources within a BWP that have a C-LBT failure, and where A is a value (e.g., an integer) larger than zero and smaller than or equal to one hundred. If A is equal to 100, the BWP is considered as having a BWP level C-LBT failure if all of the configured SRS resource (s) within a BWP have a SRS C-LBT failure. In any of various embodiments, the value of A may be configured by the network 104 to the user device 102, or the user device 102 may be preconfigured with the A value, such as it is pre-defined and / or fixed in the specification.

[0118] Additionally, in some embodiments, the X value for determining a SRS C-LBT failure may be the same for each SRS resource within a BWP, and / or the time period T value for determining a SRS C-LBT failure may be the same for each SRS resource within a BWP. Also, in some embodiments, different BWPs may be associated with different priorities or CAPCs. According to the different priorities or CAPCs, different BWPs may have different X values, different time period T values, and / or different A values from each other.

[0119] Additionally, in some embodiments, a user device 102 may be configured with multiple serving cells when carrier aggregation (CA) is enabled. Each serving cell may have its own SRS configuration. For SPcell (Pcell and PScell) , each BWP of the SPcell may be configured with a SRS configuration. Based on the resource level C-LBT failure, if A%of SRS resources within a serving cell has a SRS C-LBT failure, the serving cell is considered as having a serving cell C-LBT failure, where the value A is the percentage of the number of the SRS resources within a serving cell that has a C-LBT failure, and where A is a value (e.g., an integer) larger than zero and smaller than or equal to one hundred. If A is equal to 100, the frequency layer is considered as having a serving cell level C-LBT failure if all of the configured SRS resource (s) within a serving cell have a SRS C-LBT failure. Also, in any of various embodiments, the value of A may be configured by the network 104 to the user device 102, or the user device 102 may be preconfigured with the A value, such as it is predefined or fixed in the specification.

[0120] Additionally, in some embodiments, the X value for determining a SRS C-LBT failure may be the same for each SRS resource within a serving cell, and / or the time period T value for determining a SRS C-LBT failure may be the same for each SRS resource within a serving cell. Also, in some embodiments, different serving cells may be associated with different priorities or CAPCs for SRS transmission. According to the different priorities or CAPCs, different serving cells may have different X values, different time period T values, and / or different A values from each other.

[0121] Additionally, in some embodiments, a user device 102 may can detect whether a LBT failure or a C-LBT failure happens in the PHY layer or in the MAC layer. For the above SRS resource level, resource set level, BWP level, and / or serving cell level C-LBT failure, the user device 102 may set a counter for counting the X value and / or the A value during the time period T. The user device 102 may perform the counting in the PHY layer or in the MAC layer.

[0122] Additionally, in some embodiments, in event that a C-LBT failure associated with a SRS transmission occurs, a user device 102 may perform at least one of the following: drop the transmission of the SRS, try to transmit other configured SRSs, change a BWP to transmit the SRS, change a serving cell to transmit the SRS, or report to the network 104 that a C-LBT failure of the SRS has occurred. In some embodiments, the report message may indicate that the reported SRS resource, SRS resource set, BWP, or serving cell is having a C-LBT failure, furthermore, to be re-configured or changed. The report message may indicate to the gNB 206 to stop monitoring the SRS that the user device 102 reported, because the SRS has experienced a C-LBT failure and, in turn, the user device 102 will not transmit the SRS.

[0123] Also, in some embodiments, the report from the user device 102 to the gNB 206 may include at least one of: a SRS resource ID, a SRS resource set ID, a serving cell ID, or BWP ID, to indicate which SRS resource, SRS resource sets, BWP, or serving cell has experienced a C-LBT failure. In any of various embodiments, the report may be transmitted to the network 104 via a UCI, an UL MAC CE, or an UL RRC message. Also, the user device 102 may report after each time a C-LBT failure occurs, or the user device 102 may report several C-LBT failures at one time.

[0124] Additionally, in some embodiments, the report may include a SRS configuration that the user device 102 wants. For example, the SRS configuration may include the priority or the CAPC of the SRS transmission. In addition, in any of various embodiments, the gNB 206 may indicate the user device’s 102 report about the SRS C-LBT failure to the LMF 202, such as via a NRPPa message.

[0125] Additionally, in some embodiments, when a user device 102 sends a SRS to a gNB 206 in an unlicensed band, the user device 102 may perform LBT before the SRS transmission. Because the LBT may fail, the SRS instance may not be successfully transmitted. If the user device 102 tries LBT a certain number of times per SRS and then drops the SRS if the certain number of LBTs fail (which means a C-LBT failure associated with the SRS has occurred) , the gNB 206 may not receive and / or measure an adequate SRS to form a good measurement result. In order to increase the LBT success rate and guarantee that the gNB 206 may acquire an adequate SRS measurement result, if a C-LBT failure occurs when the user device 102 transmits a SRS, the user device 102 may adjust the priority or the CAPC of the SRS, and then try to transmit again. In particular of these embodiments, the user device 102 may increase the priority value or the CAPC value of the SRS and try a Type-1 LBT again. Also, in some embodiments, the priority or CAPC of the SRS may be associated with at least one of: per SRS resource, per SRS resource set, per BWP, per serving cell, or any combination thereof.

[0126] Also, in some embodiments, a gNB 206 may indicate to a user device 102 which SRS’s CAPC or priority can be adjusted, such as via at least one of: DL RRC signaling, a DL MAC CE, or a DCI message. Additionally, in some embodiments, the LMF 202 may request the gNB 206 to configure at least one SRS whose CAPC can be adjusted, such as via a NRPPa message, i.e., request SRS characteristics. Also, in some embodiments, the gNB 206 may decide or determine the SRS that can adjust CAPC by itself. In addition or alternatively, the gNB 206 may respond to the LMF 202 with the SRS configuration including which SRS’s CAPC can be adjusted. For these requests and responses, the SRS may include at least one of: a SRS resource, a SRS resource set, a SRS configuration per BWP, or SRS configuration per serving cell.

[0127] Additionally, in some embodiments, a DL-PRS and a DL transmission may be both in a DL  transmission burst. In addition or alternatively, in some embodiments, a SRS and an UL transmission may be both in a UL transmission burst.

[0128] Additionally, in some embodiments, if a user device 102 or a gNB 206 is to, or is configured to, transmit multiple reference signal (RS) resources, and the RS instances of the same or different RS resources form a continuous transmission, then the multiple RS instances can form a RS transmission burst. As used herein, a continuous transmission of multiple RS instances means that a time gap between consecutive RS instances is smaller than a certain or predetermined value. Additionally, in some embodiments, a continuous transmission is defined as a set of transmissions from a transmitting node without any time gaps greater than Y microseconds (μs) . In particular of these embodiments, Y is 16 or 25, although other values of Y may be possible. In other embodiments, if a user device 102 or a gNB 206 is to, or is configured to, transmit multiple RS resources, and the different RS resources form a continuous transmission, then the multiple RS resources may form a RS transmission burst.

[0129] Additionally, in some embodiments, if a user device 102 or a gNB 206 is to transmit a RS transmission burst, the user device 102 or the gNB 206 may perform LBT on all the RB sets of the whole RS transmission burst. According to the LBT results, each of (or part of) the RS instance or RS resource in the RS transmission burst may be transmitted on the available or idle RB sets. This means that LBT is performed per RS transmission burst.

[0130] Additionally, in some embodiments, a user device 102 or a gNB 206 may determine the CAPC of the RS transmission burst according to at least one of the following: the first RS transmission in the RS transmission burst; the highest CAPC of all of the RS transmissions in the RS transmission burst; the lowest CAPC of all of the RS transmissions in the RS transmission burst; a higher layer’s (higher than PHY for example) indication; an indication from the LMF 202 to the user device 102 or the gNB 206; and indication from the gNB 206 to the user device 102; and indication from one user device 102 to another user device 102; and indication from a user device 102 to a gNB 206; or an implementation of the user device 102 or the gNB 206. For at least some of these embodiments, the RS may be a SL-PRS, a DL-PRS, a SRS, or a SRS for positioning. Correspondingly, one RS transmission burst may include at least one of: several SRS instances, several DL-PRS instances, several SL-PRS instances, several SRS instances, or several SL-PRS instances.

[0131] The description and accompanying drawings above provide specific example embodiments and implementations. The described subject matter may, however, be embodied in a variety of different forms and, therefore, covered or claimed subject matter is intended to be construed as not being limited to any example  embodiments set forth herein. A reasonably broad scope for claimed or covered subject matter is intended. Among other things, for example, subject matter may be embodied as methods, devices, components, systems, or non-transitory computer-readable media for storing computer codes. Accordingly, embodiments may, for example, take the form of hardware, software, firmware, storage media or any combination thereof. For example, the method embodiments described above may be implemented by components, devices, or systems including memory and processors by executing computer codes stored in the memory.

[0132] Throughout the specification and claims, terms may have nuanced meanings suggested or implied in context beyond an explicitly stated meaning. Likewise, the phrase “in one embodiment / implementation” as used herein does not necessarily refer to the same embodiment and the phrase “in another embodiment / implementation” as used herein does not necessarily refer to a different embodiment. It is intended, for example, that claimed subject matter includes combinations of example embodiments in whole or in part.

[0133] In general, terminology may be understood at least in part from usage in context. For example, terms, such as “and” , “or” , or “and / or, ” as used herein may include a variety of meanings that may depend at least in part on the context in which such terms are used. Typically, “or” if used to associate a list, such as A, B or C, is intended to mean A, B, and C, here used in the inclusive sense, as well as A, B or C, here used in the exclusive sense. In addition, the term “one or more” as used herein, depending at least in part upon context, may be used to describe any feature, structure, or characteristic in a singular sense or may be used to describe combinations of features, structures or characteristics in a plural sense. Similarly, terms, such as “a, ” “an, ” or “the, ” may be understood to convey a singular usage or to convey a plural usage, depending at least in part upon context. In addition, the term “based on” may be understood as not necessarily intended to convey an exclusive set of factors and may, instead, allow for existence of additional factors not necessarily expressly described, again, depending at least in part on context.

[0134] Reference throughout this specification to features, advantages, or similar language does not imply that all of the features and advantages that may be realized with the present solution should be or are included in any single implementation thereof. Rather, language referring to the features and advantages is understood to mean that a specific feature, advantage, or characteristic described in connection with an embodiment is included in at least one embodiment of the present solution. Thus, discussions of the features and advantages, and similar language, throughout the specification may, but do not necessarily, refer to the same embodiment.

[0135] Furthermore, the described features, advantages and characteristics of the present solution may be  combined in any suitable manner in one or more embodiments. One of ordinary skill in the relevant art will recognize, in light of the description herein, that the present solution can be practiced without one or more of the specific features or advantages of a particular embodiment. In other instances, additional features and advantages may be recognized in certain embodiments that may not be present in all embodiments of the present solution.

[0136] The subject matter of the disclosure may also relate to or include, among others, the following aspects:
