[0001] The invention relates to a change table, and in particular to a height-adjustable change table.BACKGROUND

[0002] A change table is a small elevated table used for changing children out of soiled diapers or nappies and into clean underwear. Typically, change tables are used from a child's birth until around three years of age. Conventional change tables comprise a small padded base, usually rectangular in shape, elevated above ground level such that an adult may reach a child on the change table without bending. Known change tables are simple flat platforms, which allow easy access to the child, but provide no means for retaining the child on the table safely.

[0003] Change tables are particularly useful in changing children, as they provide adequate access to the child by a parent or caretaker. However, said parent or caretaker must pick up the child to place them onto, and back off of, the change table. In home settings, this can result in injury, specifically back injury, to a parent or caretaker from repeatedly reaching down to pick up the child. The risk of injury also applies in a professional settings, such as at a hospital or childcare centre. In professional settings, however, there is additional considerations with regard to occupational health and safety laws and the heightening of risks associated with heavily repeated actions and with regard to the safety of children in the care of the professional. Some jurisdictions have strict health and safety regulations regarding equipment and actions relating to the care of children. Accordingly, the practice of repeatedly lifting a child up to a conventional change table may be in contravention of occupational health and safety laws (or at least obligations), and any equipment used to assist in the changing of a child must meet various regulations.

[0006] According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a change table, comprising: a frame including a base and a pair of upright-extending side posts located at a proximal end of the base and spaced from one another; a frame including a base and a pair of upright-extending side posts located at a proximal end of the base and spaced from each other; at least one height adjustable leg operatively connected to the frame; a prime mover configured to effect the height of the leg so as to adjust the base of the change table between a raised position and a lowered position; and a barrier positioned in between the pair of side posts, wherein the barrier is configured to substantially extend between the side posts in a closed state.

[0051] The present invention relates to a change table 100 having a height adjustable base 11 or platform on which a change area 13 is located. The table being configured with safety barrier means 18 which allow access to the change area by users, such as a caregiver and / or a child, before and after adjustments are made to the height of the table 100. It is to be understood that, whilst the invention has been described in relation to a change table, it may also beadvantageously adapted for use in other applications such as height adjustable beds, cots or cribs, without departing from the invention.

[0052] While reference is made, in the following description, to the change table being used with / for a user, child or patient, it is understood that the change table 100 disclosed herein should not be limited to such a preferment, and that the change table may additionally be suitable for other ages of person, including adults, and / or for animals. [0054] Figures 1 to 6 show a preferred embodiment of the invention, in the form of a change table 100 having a frame 10 which comprises the base 11 to which a height adjustment mechanism 16 is affixed. The base 11 provides the structural base in the form of a platform to which additional components of the change table 100 are attached and / or supported. According to a preferred embodiment, the base 11 is of a substantially rectangular or square shape having a narrower width spanning across the base and a longer length in a direction perpendicular to the width, though other shapes and configurations may also be suitable without departing from the invention. In particular, the change table 100 shown in the Figures has a base 11 with a width of about 650 mm and a length of about 720 mm. The frame 10 further comprises a pair of uprightextending side posts 14 located at a proximal end of the base 11 (the end that is closer to the users during operation). In the preferred embodiment, the side posts 14 are spaced from each other and positioned substantially at the proximal front corners of the base 11 . The frame 10 can be further provided with side and back wall member(s) 15 which substantially enclose the base 11 and thereby reducing the risk of a subject inadvertently falling off of the change area 13 of the table 100. In the preferred embodiment, the wall member(s) 15 projects from, and extends around the perimeter of, the base 11 , excluding the area between which the side posts 14 are spaced.

[0055] The table 100 comprises at least one height adjustable leg 17 which is operatively connected or coupled to the frame 10. The adjustable leg 17 can be in the form of a telescopic leg. In the preferred embodiment, a pair of such height adjustable legs 17 are provided, but other configurations having more legs, for example three, four or more legs, may also be suitable. The height adjustable leg(s) 17 are connected to the frame 10, preferably to the base 11 , such that any height adjustments of the leg(s) 17 correspondingly affects the height of the base 11 , and inturn, the height / elevation of the change area 13. [0056] The change table 100 further comprises a child safety barrier 18 which is located at the proximal end of the base and is configured to substantially extend, in a deployed state, between the pair of side posts 14 so as to act as a barrier to entry and exit of the change area 13. In the preferred embodiment, the barrier 18 is in the form of a screen which is retractable from and into a cylindrical roller 20. The barrier 18 is configured to be movable between a stowed state, in which the screen is retracted back to its housing, and the deployed state, in which the screen is opened to extend between the pair of upright posts 14. In some embodiments, the barrier 18 is made from a substantially transparent material so that a user could see straight through the barrier 18 into the change table 100. Polyvinyl chloride has been identified as a suitable material for the barrier 18, but other materials may also be used without departing from the invention.

It is understood that the open and closed states are largely equivalent to the deployed and stowed states of the previous embodiment. Inclusion of a barrier 18 having such screens 24 is particularly advantageous as, when provided in a rigid form, they are particularly strong and can prevent a child / patient from inadvertently pushing against the barrier 18, from within the table 100, to break or deform the barrier 18 and falling out of the table 100. Furthermore, barriers 18 including a pair of screens 24 allow a caretaker to access the child / patient by opening only one of the screens 24, thereby reducing therisk of the child / patient falling out of the table 100 as the opening, with only one screen 24 open, is too small for the child / patient to fit through, but large enough for the caretaker to access the child / patient.

However, the wheels 26 need not be caster wheels, and could instead be any type of wheel attachable to the end of the leg 17 as described, and which are rated to carry the weight of the table 100.

THE CLAIMS DEFINING THE INVENTION ARE AS FOLLOWS:

1. A change table, comprising : a frame including a base and a pair of upright-extending side posts located at a proximal end of the base and spaced from one another; at least one height adjustable leg operatively connected to the frame; a prime mover configured to effect the height of the leg so as to adjust the base of the change table between a raised position and a lowered position; and a barrier positioned in between the pair of side posts, wherein the barrier is configured to substantially extend between the side posts in a closed state.

2. A change table according to claim 1 , wherein the barrier comprises a pair of hinged screens positioned at the proximal end of the base.

3. A change table according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the barrier is configured to hingedly rotate into an open state so as to allow unimpeded access to the base.

4. A change table according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the barrier comprises a substantially transparent material.

5. A change table according to claim 4, wherein the material is polyvinyl chloride or acrylic.

6. A change table according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the barrier is biased to the open state, and retainable in the closed state by one or more latching member(s) that couple with the / each of the side posts.

7. A change table according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the / each of the side posts includes a catch configured to retain the barrier when extended between the side posts.

8. A change table according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the height adjustable leg is a telescopic leg and wherein the table comprises four such adjustable legs for supporting the frame.

9. A change table according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the prime mover comprises a linear actuator configured to adjust the height of the leg.

10. A change table according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the prime mover is configured to prevent the table from raising further than a predetermined height.

11. A change table according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the prime mover is configured to be operable only when said barrier is in a closed state.

12. A change table according to any one of the preceding claims, comprising a sensor configured to detect a position of the barrier, the sensor preventing operation of the prime mover when the barrier is not in the closed state.

13. A change table according to any one of the preceding claims, comprising a sensor configured to detect operation of the prime mover, the sensor preventing hinged rotation of the barrier into an open state when the prime mover is operated.

14. A change table according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the base is surrounded by a plurality of right-extending posts.

15. A change table according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the / each leg includes a wheel disposed at an end opposite said connection to the frame for moving the change table.

16. A change table according to claim 15, wherein the / each wheel is lockable to prevent the change table from moving.

17. A change table according to claim 15, further comprising a skirt which surrounds the base and extends downwardly therefrom to prevent access underneath the base.

18. A change table according to claim 17, wherein the skirt is a height adjustable skirt and adjusts in height relative the height of the / each leg.

19. A method of attending to a user by a caretaker using a change table in accordance with any one of claims 1 to 18, the method comprising the steps of: opening the barrier into an open state when the base is in the lowered position so that the user may embark onto the base; closing the barrier into a closed state so as to allow safe operation of the change table; operating the prime mover to adjust the height of the base to the raised position; andopening the barrier into an open state when the base is in the raised position to attend to the user.

20. A method according to claim 19, further comprising the steps of: closing the barrier into the closed state, when the base is in the raised position, once the user has been attended to; operating the prime mover to adjust the height of the base to the lowered position; and opening the barrier into an open state so that the user may disembark from the base of the change table.

21. A method according to either claim 19 or claim 20, further comprising a sensor for sensing a position of the barrier, the method including preventing operation of the prime mover if the sensor detects the barrier to be in the open state.

22. A method according to claim 21 , further comprising a sensor for sensing operation of the prime mover, the method including preventing any movement of the barrier into the open state if the sensor detects ongoing operation of the prime mover.
