Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] This application claims priority from U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 62 / 832,763, filed April 11, 2019. [Background technology]
[0002] Mobile theatres in their many designs physically transport the audience from a start / boarding location to a projection environment, and the challenge is primarily one of immersion in that environment.
[0003] Most suspended theatre designs to date have been based on the literal suspension of the seating arrangement, usually by cables, counterweights and winches, and usually from an overhead framework and set of sheaves. Other related products, commonly referred to as "flying theatres", often rely on a moving overhead frame or pivoting floor that translates the seats into the theatre environment. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
[0006] Generally, as will be appreciated by those skilled in the art of theater seating, particularly immersive theater, rather than having equipment above the audience (which would increase facility height and safety issues) or below the audience (which would also increase facility height), the theater seating assemblies claimed herein raise and lower left and right row seats as described herein by using two, different but otherwise identical machines for the left and right, which allows the arrangement to minimize facility height.
[0007] Further, in the described embodiment, rather than the rows of seats being pivoted and raised with the rotating floor, a second function changes the relative positions of the rows of seats relative to one another while the lift function is performed, such as by rotation. This rotation function lifts the rear row of seats above the front row of seats, allowing control over the relative row positions during lift and during the performance. The rotation function also allows the rows of seats to "hop" over a theater screen or wall below during lift and then flatten from front to rear in order to reach their final vertical relationship after clearing that hurdle.
[0008] In a first embodiment, and referring generally to FIG. 1 , a theater seating assembly 1 typically includes one or more seat support bases 210a, 210b, 210c, 210d, a first seat support 200a, a second seat support 200b disposed distally from the first seat support 200a along the seat support bases 210a, 210b, 210c, 210d in a mirror orientation with respect to a seat axis defined by a longitudinal distance between the first seat support 200a and the second seat support 200b, and a first passenger seat beam. The system includes a passenger seat assembly 260 operably connected to the rotator 240a and the second passenger seat beam rotator 240b, the passenger seat assembly 260 being arranged substantially parallel to a seat axis and comprising a passenger seating area (such as 163 in FIG. 2 ), and one or more system controllers 201, 202 in operative communication with the first lift arm actuator 221a, the second lift arm actuator 221b, the first passenger seat beam rotator actuator 241a and the second passenger seat beam rotator actuator 241b.
[0009] The first seat support 200a comprises a first lift arm 220a pivotally connected to the seat support bases 210a, 210b, a first lift arm actuator 221a operably and typically pivotally connected to the first lift arm 220a and typically pivotally connected to the seat support bases 210a, 210b, a first passenger seat beam rotator 240a operably and typically pivotally connected to the first lift arm 220a distally from the seat support bases 210a, 210b, 210c, 210d, and a first passenger seat beam rotator actuator 241a operably connected to the first passenger seat beam rotator 240a. The first passenger seat beam rotator actuator 241a operates to effect a change in the tilt of the passenger seat row independent of the rotation of the first lift arm 220a.
[0010] The second seat support 200b typically mirrors the first seat support 200a and comprises a second lift arm 220b pivotally connected to the seat support base 210c, 210d, a second lift arm actuator 221b operably and typically pivotally connected to the second lift arm 220b and typically pivotally connected to the seat support base 210c, 210d, the second lift arm actuator 221b configured to synchronize movement of the second lift arm 220b with movement of the first lift arm 220a, a second passenger seat beam rotator 240b operably and typically pivotally connected to the second lift arm 220b, and a second passenger seat beam rotator actuator 241b operably connected to the second passenger seat beam rotator 240b distally from the seat support base 210c, 210d. The second passenger seat beam rotator actuator 241b also operates in cooperation with the first passenger seat beam rotator actuator 241a to effect changes in the tilt of the passenger seat row independent of the rotation of the second lift arm 220b.
[0011] A first XY plane is defined by seat support bases 210a, 210b and first lift arm 220a, and a second XY plane is defined by seat support bases 210c, 210d and second lift arm 220b, the second XY plane being substantially parallel to the first XY plane.
[0012] In this first embodiment, the first lift arm 220a can include a lower portion and an upper portion offset at a predetermined angle from the lower portion, and the second lift arm 220b is substantially identical to the first lift arm 220a.
[0013] Typically, in this first embodiment, the first passenger seat beam rotator 240a is pivotally connected to the first lift arm 220a at a pivot point located substantially in the center of the first passenger seat beam rotator 240a, and the second passenger seat beam rotator 240b is similarly pivotally connected to the second lift arm 220b at a pivot point located substantially in the center of the second passenger seat beam rotator 240b. The pivots may be part of the first lift arm 220a or the second lift arm 220b and fit into corresponding gaps in the first lift arm 220a or the second lift arm 220b, respectively, or may be part of the first lift arm 220a and the second lift arm 220b and fit into corresponding gaps in the first passenger seat beam rotator 240a and the second passenger seat beam rotator 240b, respectively.
[0014] In this embodiment, the passenger seat beam rotator actuators 241a, 241b typically comprise one or more rotary motors that move the passenger seat assembly 260 via the passenger seat beam rotators 240a, 240b to directly impart tilt to the seat beams 260a, 260b relative to the tilt rotators 240a, 240b such that tilting the top row, e.g. 260a, tilts the front row, e.g. 260b, in sync. If rotary motors are used, the tilt rotators 240a, 240b may further comprise chain or sprocket sets 242a, 242b. In certain contemplated embodiments, each row 260a, 260b may be tilted by its own pair of motors, avoiding mechanical interconnections.
[0015] The system controllers 201, 202 operate to control and coordinate the movement of the first lift arm 220a and the second lift arm 220b in their respective XY planes while simultaneously effecting changes to the tilt angle of the passenger seat assembly 260.
[0016] In a contemplated version of this embodiment, the passenger seat assembly 260 typically comprises one or more seat beams 260a substantially parallel to the seat axis operably connected to the first passenger seat beam rotator 240a at a first end of the first passenger seat beam rotator 240a and to the second passenger seat beam rotator 240b at a corresponding first end of the second passenger seat beam rotator 240b, and one or more seat beams 260b substantially parallel to the first seat beams 260a operably connected distally from the first end to the first passenger seat beam rotator 240a at a second end of the first passenger seat beam rotator 240a and to the second passenger seat beam rotator 240b at a corresponding second end of the second passenger seat beam rotator 240b. Typically, the one or more safety encoders 280 are located at predetermined locations, typically at or near the joints of the seat beam rotators 240a, 240b.
[0018] Also in this embodiment, one or more sensors 281, 282 may be present and in operative communication with the system controllers 201, 202, such as a pressure transducer 281, a linear transducer 282, or the like, or a combination thereof, operative to provide measurements of predetermined physical properties of the first lift arm 220a or the second lift arm 220b. Typically, the sensors 281, 282 are used to monitor and report the lift arm positions to ensure they are synchronized with each other.
[0019] If motors 241a, 241b and / or 221a, 221b are used, each may be a safety encoder 280 and / or sensors 281, 282 may be used to monitor the rotational output of the associated motors 241a, 241b and / or 221a, 221b.

The brakes may provide a braking action to the motor, to a shaft rotated or translated by the motor, or to a disk or other structure designed to be so acted upon. In other embodiments, braking may be more or less passive, provided by the normal state of an electric motor with power removed, or by the physical properties of hydraulic properties under pressure.
[0021] In contemplated versions of this embodiment, there may be one or more motion dampers 221a, 221b operably connected to the seat support base 210a, 210b, 210c, 210d, the first lift arm 220a and / or the second lift arm 220b. The motion dampers 221c, 221d typically consist of a first motion damper 221c operably connected to the first lift arm 220a and a second motion damper 221d operably connected to the second lift arm 220b.

The system controllers 70, 201, 202 substantially synchronously control the first and second seat supports 200a, 200b and their associated passenger seat beam rotators 240a, 240b via their associated seat beam rotator actuators 241a, 241b to effect movement between each lift arm 220a, 220b and its associated actuators 221a, 221b, such as by adjusting the angular relationship between the lift arm lowered position (FIGS. 11, 13) and the lift arm raised position (FIGS. 7-10) at a first predetermined set of times. Rather than pivoting the passenger seat assembly 260 with the rotating floor, the position of the passenger seat assembly 260 will be changed while the raise and / or lower functions are being performed. The effecting of the tilt change typically occurs at a predetermined time from a second predetermined set of times when the first lift arm 220a and second lift arm 220b are being raised or lowered.
[0045] Typically, the arm actuators 221a, 221b operate to provide movement in the first lift arm 220a in a first XY plane defined by the seat support bases 210a, 210b and the first lift arm 220a, and cooperate to provide substantially identical movement of the second lift arm 220b in a second XY plane defined by the seat support bases 210c, 210d and the second lift arm 220b, the second XY plane being substantially parallel to the first XY plane. The movement provided by the passenger seat beam rotators 240a, 240b operates to vary the tilt angle of the passenger seat 260 relative to the passenger seat row axis. In most embodiments, the system controller 70, 201, 202 is in operative communication with the arm actuators 221a, 221b and the passenger seat beam rotators 240a, 240b to coordinate the movement of the first lift arm 220a and the second lift arm 220b in their respective XY planes while simultaneously effecting changes to the tilt angle.
[0046] In embodiments in which the floor 101 (FIG. 13) further includes nesting slots or channels 105 (FIG. 13) configured to receive the seat row beams 260a, 260b therein, the seat row beam 260a, 260b closest to the nesting slot 105 may be nested in the nesting slot 105 in the first position, thereby hiding that seat row beam 260a, 260b from the view of spectators while in this lowered first position for boarding and disembarking.
[0047] 6, the immersive theatre system 100 typically further comprises one or more audiovisual projectors 103 as described above, with the movement of the first and second seat supports 200a, 200b and the rotation of the passenger seat assembly 260 being synchronized with the audiovisual projector 103. Thus, the first and second predetermined sets of times are typically programmed to match human perceptual representation, for example, from or synchronized with the projection from the audiovisual projector 103.
[0048] The seat supports 200a, 200b may be provided or effected with a sudden translation from front to rear while in the raised screen position with a combination of lift and rotational motions, and the tilt function may be used to hold the passenger seat assembly 260 in a predetermined position of forward and backward tilt available in the raised or screen position.
[0049] In the case where the passenger seat assembly 260 comprises multiple seat beams, for example a first seat beam 260a and a second seat beam 260b as described above, the rotation function may be controlled using the system controllers 70, 201, 202 to lift one of the seat row beams 260a, 260b and its associated passenger seat 163 (FIG. 2) above the second set of seat row beams 260a, 260b and its associated passenger seat 163, thereby allowing control over the relative row positions during lift and during a screening. Additionally, as shown in FIGS. 7-12, the rotation function may be used to flatten the seat row beams 260a, 260b and their associated passenger seat rows 163, for example from front to back, in order to "hop" over a theater screen or wall below during lift and then clear that hurdle before reaching a predetermined final longitudinal relationship. A second function may also be executed from the system controller 70, 201, 202, for example via a command, to change the relative positions of the seat row beams 260a and their associated passenger seats 163 relative to one another while the lift function is being performed.
[0050] In certain of the above embodiments, when seat row beam hangers 600 are present, the tilt of the individual seat row beams 260a, 260b and their associated passenger seats 163 can be controlled in both forward and rearward motion by forcing the rotation of the seat row beam hangers 600 at the end of each seat row beam relative to the floor.
[0051] In a further embodiment, and now generally referring to FIGS. 7-10, an immersive theater experience for an immersive theater system can be achieved by using a system controller to command the rotate actuator 40, the tilt actuator 28 and the lift actuator 22 to position the seat actuators in a first position, and by controlling the rotor arms 32 of the left and right lift arms relative to their associated lift arms 20 to effect movement between each lift arm 20 and its associated rotor arm 32 to adjust the angular relationship between the two by adjusting the angular relationship between a first lift arm down position and a second lift arm up screen position (FIGS. 7-10). and varying the relative positions of the seat row beams 161 and their associated passenger seats 162 relative to one another while the lift function is being performed on the lift arms 20 such that, rather than pivoting the seat row beams 161 and their associated passenger seats 162 with the rotating floor, the rotation function lifts the second set of seat row beams 161 and their associated passenger seats 162 onto the second set of seat row beams 161 and their associated passenger seats 162, thereby allowing control over the relative row positions during lift and during screening. The rotation function provided by the rotator arms 32 can be used to flatten the seat row beams 161 and their associated passenger seats 162 from front to rear in order to "hop" over a theater screen or wall below during lift and then clear that hurdle before reaching a predetermined final longitudinal relationship.
[0052] Additionally, a second function may be performed to change the mutual positions of the set of seat row beams 161 and their associated passenger seats 162 relative to each other while the lift function is being performed.
[0053] As with the other methods, the floor 101 (FIG. 13) further includes nesting slots 105 configured to receive the seat row beams 161, which are nested or received in the nesting slots 105 in the first position, thereby allowing the seat row beams 161 to be hidden from view of spectators while in the lowered first position for boarding and disembarking.
[0054] Additionally, the tilt of the individual seat row beams 161 and their associated passenger seats 162 may be controlled typically in both the forward and rearward directions by forcing the rotation of the seat row beam hangers 31 relative to the end of each seat row beam relative to the facility floor 101. This is typically accomplished using a system controller 70, 201, 202, which may further be associated with a projector 103, for example, during a showing.
[0055] Other functions may be similarly controlled. By way of example and not limitation, a forward to aft sudden translation may be provided by a combination of lift and rotation actions while the lift arms 20 are in the raised screen position. By way of further example and not limitation, a tilt function may be used to hold the passenger seat 162 in a predefined forward and aft tilt position available in the raised screen position.
[0056] As described herein, in an embodiment, the first and second lift arms, e.g., 20, have pivot joints with passenger seat beam rotors controlled by one or more, preferably linear actuators or rotary motors. The operation of these actuators / motors is to adjust the angular relationship between the arms and their associated passenger seat beam rotors.
[0057] Although not involving cables, the theater seating assemblies described herein still employ seats suspended by seat beams to which each passenger seat is attached. In embodiments, as also described herein, the theater seating assembly can provide controlled tilt of individual seat rows, both forward and aft, for example, by forcing the rotation of hangers against the ends of each seat row beam. This rotation is relative to the floor of the facility, not to a lift arm or rotor. Most embodiments are agnostic seating types that rest on their beams. For example, it can support individual or multiple sets of moving seats supporting base seats, or multiple rows of stationary seats without further movement.
[0058] The foregoing disclosure and description of the invention is exemplary and explanatory. Various changes in size, shape, and materials as well as in the details of the exemplary construction and / or exemplary methods may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
