Description

[Technical field]

[0001] The present disclosure relates generally to devices for disinfecting and sterilizing access ports, such as male and female Luer fittings, and more particularly to a disinfection and sterilization device capable of accommodating multiple types of connectors. [Background technology]

[0002] Vascular access devices (VADs) are commonly used therapeutic devices and include intravenous (IV) catheters. There are two general classifications of VADs: peripheral catheters and central venous catheters. Bacteria and other microorganisms can enter a patient's vasculature through the access hubs and ports / valves when connected to a VAD to deliver fluids or medications. Each access hub (or port / valve or connection) is associated with a risk of transmitting a catheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI), which can be costly and potentially fatal.

[0003] To reduce cases of CRBSI and ensure proper use and maintenance of VADs, standards of practice, including disinfection and cleaning procedures, have been developed.

[0004] Antiseptic caps have been added to the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) guidelines, and early indications are that they will also be incorporated into the 2016 Infusion Nurses Society (INS) guidelines. Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]

[0005] In developed markets, when utilizing intravenous catheters, it is common to use a needleless connector to close the system and then access and administer medications or other necessary fluids to the patient through the catheter. The INS practice standards recommend the use of needleless connectors and state that "before each access, they should be consistently and thoroughly disinfected using alcohol, tincture of iodine, or a combination of chlorhexidine gluconate and alcohol." Disinfection of needleless connectors is intended to ultimately aid in the reduction of bacteria that may live on the surface and possibly lead to various catheter-related complications, including CRBSI. Nurses typically complete this disinfection task by using a 70% isopropyl alcohol (IPA) pad to perform what is known as "scrubbing the hub." However, adherence to this practice is generally very low. In addition to the lack of adherence to "scrubbing the hub," it was also noted through interviews with clinicians that there is often variability in scrubbing time, drying time, and number of times needleless connectors are scrubbed.

[0006] There are many risks of contact or contamination throughout the sequence of procedures associated with the transmission of microorganisms that can cause CRBSI. Contamination can occur during mixing of medications, loading of the cannula, and insertion into the access hub. Because the procedure of connecting to a VAD is so common and simple, the risks associated with entering the patient's vascular system have often been overlooked. Currently, the risk to the hospital and the patient is largely dependent on the diligence of the clinician making the connection, and this diligence has little control.

[0007] Currently, caps for male needleless connectors, female needleless connectors, intravenous (IV), and hemodialysis lines use different designs and are therefore limited to the type of connectors that the caps can be attached to. Thus, previous disinfection caps were designed to fit only one type of connector and were specific to one particular dimension and / or shape of the connector. Thus, there is a need for a disinfection device that can accommodate multiple types of connectors to streamline the disinfection process. There is also a need for a disinfection device that can disinfect for multiple consecutive days. overview [Means for solving the problem]
