Description

[Technical field]

[0001] TECHNICAL FIELD The non-limiting exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure relate generally to the field of communications, and more particularly to a method and apparatus for obtaining routing information. [Background technology]

[0002] This section introduces aspects that may facilitate a better understanding of the disclosure. Accordingly, the statements in this section should be read in this light and not understood as admissions about what is in the prior art or what is outside the prior art.

[0003] In a communication network, such as Long Term Evolution (LTE) and New Radio (NR) as defined by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), various registration information may be stored in various network entities. A network entity or network function (NF) may obtain a type of registration information from another network entity or network function that may store the registration information.

[0004] For example, a registration service operation may be initiated by an NF that selects to provide a service to a user equipment (UE) in order to store the relevant UE context management (UECM) information in a unified data management (UDM) whose consumers are the Access and mobility Function (AMF) for access and mobility management services, the Session Management Function (SMF) for session management services, the Short Message Service Function (SMSF) for short message service (SMS) services, and the home subscriber server (HSS) for an Internet protocol-Short Message-Gateway (IP-SM-GW) in an SMS over IP (SMSoIP) scenario. As part of this registration procedure, the UDM may authorize or deny a subscriber to use the services provided by the registered NF based on subscription data (e.g. roaming restrictions).

[0005] 3GPP TS 29.503 V17.1.0, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety, describes various registration service operations, such as: - AMF Registration for 3GPP Access - AMF registration for non-3GPP access - SMF registration - SMSF registration for 3GPP access - SMSF registration for non-3GPP access - IP-SM-GW registration

[0006] Figure 1a shows the procedure for requesting SMSF registration information of a UE for 3GPP access. Figure 1 is identical to Figure 5.3.2.5.5-1 of 3GPP TS 29.503 V17.1.0.

[0007] Figure 1a shows a scenario where an NF service consumer (e.g., a Network Exposure Function (NEF)) sends a request to a UDM to obtain SmsfRegistration information for a UE. The request includes the UE's identity ( / {ueId}), which is assumed to be a Generic Public Subscription Identifier (GPSI), the type of information requested ( / registrations / smsf-3gpp-access), and query parameters (supported-features).

[0008] Step 1. An NG service consumer (eg, NEF) sends a GET request to a resource representing the UE's SMSF registration information for 3GPP access, with a query parameter indicating supported-features.

[0009] Step 2a. The UDM responds with a "200 OK" with a message body containing the UE's SmsfRegistration for 3GPP access.

[0010] Step 2b. If the UE does not have the required subscription data for SMS service or SMS service is prohibited, a HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) status code "403 Forbidden" should be returned with additional error information in the response body (in the "ProblemDetails" element).

[0011] In case of failure, an appropriate HTTP status code MUST be returned indicating the error, and any appropriate additional error information MUST be returned in the GET response body.

[0012] Figure 1b shows a procedure for requesting SMSF registration information of a UE for non-3GPP access. Figure 1b is identical to Figure 5.3.2.5.6-1 of 3GPP TS 29.503 V17.1.0.

[0013] Figure 1b shows a scenario where an NF service consumer (e.g., NEF) sends a request to the UDM to obtain the UE's SmsfRegistration information for non-3GPP access. The request includes the UE's identity ( / {ueId}), which is assumed to be GPSI, the type of information requested ( / registrations / smsf-non-3gpp-access), and query parameters (supported-features).

[0014] Step 1. An NG service consumer (eg, NEF) sends a GET request for a resource representing the UE's SMSF registration information for non-3GPP access, with a query parameter indicating supported-features.

[0015] Step 2a. The UDM responds with a "200 OK" with a message body containing the UE's SmsfRegistration for non-3GPP access.

[0016] Step 2b. If the UE does not have the required subscription data for the SMS service or the SMS service is prohibited, the HTTP status code "403 Forbidden" should be returned with additional error information in the response body (in the "ProblemDetails" element).

[0017] In case of failure, an appropriate HTTP status code MUST be returned indicating the error, and any appropriate additional error information MUST be returned in the GET response body.

[0018] Figure 1c shows the procedure of obtaining multiple UE registration data sets. Figure 1c is identical to Figure 5.3.2.5.10-1 of 3GPP TS29.503V17.1.0.

[0019] Figure 1c illustrates a scenario in which an NF service consumer (e.g., HSS, network data analytics function (NWDAF), Network Slice-Specific Authentication and Authorization Function (NSSAAF)) sends a request to UDM to receive multiple UE registration data sets. In this example scenario, multiple AMF registration data sets for the UE are obtained in a single request. For other data sets that can be obtained in a single request, see 3GPP TS29.503V17.1.0, section 6.2.6.3.6. The request includes the resource of the UE's registrations ({ueId} / registrations) and a query parameter identifying the requested registration data sets (in this example, ?registration-dataset-names=AMF_3GPP, AMF_NON_3GPP).

[0020] Step 1. The NF service consumer (e.g., HSS, NWDAF) sends a GET request to a resource representing the UE's registration. The query parameters indicate the UE registration data set being requested.

[0021] Step 2. The UDM responds with a "200 OK" with a message body containing the requested UE registration data set.

[0022] In case of failure, an appropriate HTTP status code MUST be returned indicating the error, and any appropriate additional error information MUST be returned in the GET response body.

[0023] Section 6.2.3.6.3.3 of 3GPP TS 29.503 V17.1.0 describes the GET method, which is intended to support the Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) query parameters specified in Table 1, which is the same as Table 6.2.3.6.3.3-1 of 3GPP TS 29.503 V17.1.0. [Table 1]

[0024] The GET method is intended to support the request data structure specified in Table 2, which is the same as Table 6.2.3.6.3.3-2 of 3GPP TS 29.503 V17.1.0, and the response data structure and response codes specified in Table 3, which is the same as Table 6.2.3.6.3.3-3 of 3GPP TS 29.503 V17.1.0. [Table 2] [Table 3]

[0025] Section 6.2.3.7.3.3 of 3GPP TS29.503V17.1.0 describes the GET method.

[0026] The GET method is intended to support the URI query parameters specified in Table 4, which is the same as Table 6.2.3.7.3.3-1 of 3GPP TS 29.503 V17.1.0. [Table 4]

[0027] The GET method is intended to support the request data structure specified in Table 5, which is the same as Table 6.2.3.7.3.3-2 of 3GPP TS 29.503 V17.1.0, and the response data structure and response codes specified in Table 6, which is the same as Table 6.2.3.7.3.3-3 of 3GPP TS 29.503 V17.1.0. [Table 5] [Table 6] Summary of the Invention

[0028] This Summary is provided to introduce certain concepts in a simplified form that are further described below in the Detailed Description. This Summary is not intended to identify key features or essential features of the claimed subject matter, nor is it intended to be used to limit the scope of the claimed subject matter.

[0029] A use case exists for a network device / function such as a Short Message Service-Gateway Mobile Switching Center (SMS-GMSC) / IP-SM-GW / SMS Router or NEF to obtain the UE's routing for that service (e.g., SMS routing information for a UE registered in a 5G system), and the request is to be serviced by a 3GPP defined service such as the Nudm UECM (UE Context Management) GET service as described in 3GPP TS29.503 V17.1.0.

[0030] However, an obvious problem is that the prior art Nudm UECM GET service does not indicate to the service consumer that a UE is unable to reach a service such as SMS, and does not provide any information to the service consumer that a sub-service of a service (such as Mobile Terminated (MT)-SMS) is either forbidden or that a sub-service of a service such as MT-SMS is not provided.

[0031] For example, a service consumer such as a NEF can obtain information about an SMSF as 5G domain SMS routing information by UECM GET SMSF for 3GPP access or by UECM GET SMSF for non-3GPP access, or by UECM GET registration data sets for SMSF for 3GPP access and SMSF for non-3GPP access. However, the above service operations are not standardized to return a precise condition in the cause attribute based on the result of SMS subscription check and / or SMS waiting status check.

[0032] To overcome or mitigate at least the above-mentioned or other problems, embodiments of the present disclosure propose an improved routing information acquisition solution.

A CDMA network may implement a radio technology such as Universal Terrestrial Radio Access (UTRA). UTRA includes other derivatives of WCDMA and CDMA. A TDMA network may implement a radio technology such as Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM). An OFDMA network may implement radio technologies such as Evolved UTRA (E-UTRA), Ultra Mobile Broadband, IEEE 802.11 (Wi-Fi), IEEE 802.16 (WiMAX), IEEE 802.20, Flash OFDMA, ad-hoc networks, wireless sensor networks, etc. In the following description, the terms "network" and "system" may be used interchangeably. Furthermore, communication between two devices in a network may be performed according to any suitable communication protocol, including, but not limited to, communication protocols as defined by a standardization body such as 3GPP. For example, the communication protocol may include first generation (1G), 2G, 3G, 4G, 4.5G, 5G communication protocols, and / or any other protocols either currently known or to be developed in the future.

[0076] The term "Network Function (NF)" refers to any suitable Network Function (NF) that can be implemented in a network entity (physical or virtual) of a communication network. For example, the Network Function may be implemented either as a network element on dedicated hardware, as a software instance running on dedicated hardware, or as a virtualized function instantiated on a suitable platform, e.g., a cloud infrastructure. For example, a 5G system (5GS) may include multiple NFs such as an Access and Mobility Function (AMF), a Session Management Function (SMF), an Authentication Service Function (AUSF), a Unified Data Management (UDM), a Policy Control Function (PCF), an Application Function (AF), a Network Exposure Function (NEF), a User Plane Function (UPF), and a Network Repository Function (NRF), a Radio Access Network (RAN), a Service Communication Proxy (SCP), a Network Data Analytics Function (NWDAF), a Network Slice Selection Function (NSSF), a Network Slice Specific Authentication and Authorization Function (NSSAAF), etc. For example, a 4G system (such as LTE) may include multiple NFs, such as a Mobility Management Entity (MME), a Home Subscriber Server (HSS), a Proxy and Charging Rules Function (PCRF), a Packet Data Network Gateway (PGW), a PGW Control Plane (PGW-C), a Serving Gateway (SGW), a SGW Control Plane (SGW-C), an E-UTRAN Node B (eNB), etc. In other embodiments, the network functions may include different types of NFs, depending, for example, on the particular network.

As one example, a terminal device may represent a UE configured for communication according to one or more communication standards promulgated by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), such as the LTE or NR standards of the 3GPP. As used herein, "user equipment" or "UE" may not necessarily have a "user" in the sense of a human user who owns and / or operates the associated device. In some embodiments, a terminal device may be configured to transmit and / or receive information without direct human interaction. For example, a terminal device may be designed to transmit information to a network on a predetermined schedule, when triggered by an internal or external event, or upon a request from the communication network.Alternatively, a UE may represent a device that is intended for sale to or operation by a human user, but that may not initially be associated with a particular human user.

[0078] As yet another example, in an Internet of Things (IoT) scenario, a terminal device may represent a machine or other device that performs monitoring and / or measurements and transmits results of such monitoring and / or measurements to other terminal devices and / or network equipment. The terminal device may in this case be a Machine-to-Machine (M2M) device, which may also be referred to as a Machine-Type Communication (MTC) device in the 3GPP context. As one specific example, the terminal device may be a UE implementing the 3GPP Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) standard. Specific examples of such machines or devices are sensors, metering devices such as power meters, industrial machines, or home or personal appliances, e.g., refrigerators, televisions, watches, and other personal wearables. In other scenarios, the terminal device may represent a vehicle or other equipment that can monitor and / or report on its operating status or other functions associated with its operation.

[0079] References herein to "one embodiment," "an embodiment," "an exemplary embodiment," and the like indicate that, while a described embodiment may include a particular feature, structure, or characteristic, not all embodiments necessarily include that particular feature, structure, or characteristic. Moreover, such phrases do not necessarily refer to the same embodiment. Furthermore, when a particular feature, structure, or characteristic is described in the context of one embodiment, it is contemplated that it is within the knowledge of one of ordinary skill in the art to operate such feature, structure, or characteristic in the context of other embodiments, whether or not explicitly stated.

[0080] It is to be understood that although terms such as "first," "second," and the like may be used herein to describe various elements, such elements are not to be limited by these terms. [0085] Although the subject matter described herein may be implemented in any suitable type of system using any suitable components, the embodiments disclosed herein are described in the context of a communication system made with the exemplary system architecture shown in Figures 2-3. For simplicity, the system architecture in Figures 2-3 depicts only some exemplary elements. In practice, the communication system may further include any additional elements suitable for supporting communications between terminal devices or between terminal devices and other communication devices, such as a landline telephone, a service provider, or any other network node or terminal device. A communication system may provide communications and various types of services to one or more terminal devices to facilitate the terminal device's access to and / or use of services provided by or through the communication system.

[0086] FIG. 2 illustrates a schematic diagram of a high-level architecture in a fifth generation network according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. For example, the fifth generation network may be a 5GS. The architecture in FIG. 2 is identical to FIG. 4.2.3-1 described in 3GPP TS23.501V16.5.1, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. The system architecture in FIG. 2 may include several exemplary elements, such as AUSF, AMF, DN (data network), NEF, NRF, NSSF, PCF, SMF, UDM, UPF, AF, UE, (R)AN, SCP (Service Communication Proxy), NSSAAF (Network Slice-Specific Authentication and Authorization Function), etc.

[0087] According to an example embodiment, the UE may establish a signaling connection with the AMF over reference point N1 as shown in Figure 2. This signaling connection may enable exchange of non-access stratum (NAS) signaling between the UE and the core network, including a signaling connection between the UE and the (R)AN and an N2 connection between the (R)AN and the AMF for the UE. The (R)AN may communicate with the UPF over reference point N3. The UE may establish a protocol data unit (PDU) session to a DN (data network, e.g., an operator network or the Internet) through the UPF over reference point N6.

[0088] As further illustrated in Figure 2, the exemplary system architecture also includes service-based interfaces, such as Nnrf, Nnef, Nausf, Nudm, Npcf, Namf, and Nsmf, exposed by NFs, such as NRF, NEF, AUSF, UDM, PCF, AMF, and SMF. In addition, Figure 2 also illustrates several reference points, such as N1, N2, N3, N4, N6, and N9, that can support interactions between NF services in the NFs. For example, the reference points can be realized by identifying several NF service consumers and providers and their interactions through the service-based interfaces of the corresponding NFs for the purpose of performing specific system procedures.

[0089] The various NFs shown in Figure 2 may be responsible for functions such as session management, mobility management, authentication, security, etc. The AUSF, AMF, DN, NEF, NRF, NSSF, PCF, SMF, UDM, UPF, AF, UE, (R)AN, and SCP may include functionality as defined, for example, in section 6.2 of 3GPP TS23.501V16.5.1.

[0090] FIG. 3 illustrates a schematic diagram of a system architecture in a 4G network according to one embodiment of the present disclosure, which is identical to FIG. 4.2-1a of 3GPP TS 23.682 V16.8.0, the disclosure of which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. The system architecture of FIG. 3 may include several example elements, such as a Service Capability Server (SCS), an Application Server (AS), a Service Capability Exposure Function (SCEF), an HSS, a UE, a Radio Access Network (RAN), a Serving General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) Support Node (SGSN), an MME, a Mobile Switching Center (MSC), a Serving Gateway (S-GW), a Gateway GPRS Support Node / Packet Data Network (PDN) Gateway (GGSN / P-GW), a Machine Type Communications Interworking Function (MTC-IWF), a Charging Data Function / Charging Gateway Function (CDF / CGF), a Machine Type Communications-Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting (MTC-AAA), a Short Message Service-Service Center / Gateway MSC / Interworking MSC (SMS-SC / GMSC / IWMSC), and an Internet Protocol Short Message Gateway (IP-SM-GW). The network elements and interfaces as shown in FIG. 3 may be identical to the corresponding network elements and interfaces as described in 3GPP TS23.682V16.8.0.

[0091] 4 illustrates a flowchart of a method according to one embodiment of the present disclosure that may be performed by a device implemented in, at, or as the first network function, or a device communicatively coupled to the first network function, such that the device may provide means or modules for accomplishing various parts of the method 400, as well as means or modules for accomplishing other processes in conjunction with other components.

[0092] At block 402, a first network function may send a first request to a second network function requesting to receive at least one registration data set for a service intended for a user equipment (UE).

[0093] The first network function may be any suitable NF that may request to receive at least one registration data set for a service for the UE from the second network function, for example, the first network function may include at least one of an SMS-GMSC, an IP-SM-GW, an SMS router, a Service Capability Exposure Function (SCEF), an AMF, an SMF, an SMSF, an NEF, a Gateway Mobile Location Centre (GMLC), an NWDAF, an HSS, a home location register (HLR), and an AUSF.

[0094] In one embodiment, the first network function may include at least one of an SMS-GMSC, an IP-SM-GW, an SMS router, a SCEF, or a NEF.

[0095] The second network function may be any suitable NF capable of storing or retrieving from another NF at least one registration data set for services for the UE, for example, the second network function may include any suitable data management entity or data storage entity.

[0096] In one embodiment, the second network function may include at least one of a unified data management (UDM), a home subscriber server (HSS), or a home location register (HLR).

[0097] The second NF may provide various services to the first NF. For example, the second NF may provide at least one of a subscriber data management service, a UE context management service, a UE authentication service, an event exposure service, a parameter provisioning service, etc.

[0098] At block 404, the first network function may receive a first response from the second network function.

[0099] In one embodiment, if there is an error related to the UE's routing for the service, the first response includes a status code indicating an error related to the UE's routing for the service. If the first NF receives the status code from the second NF, it may know that the second NF has obtained at least one registration data set for the service for the UE, but there is an error related to the UE's routing for the service. In other words, the first NF knows that the service, such as SMS, is not reachable by the UE. Thus, the first NF may take some appropriate action based on knowledge of the status code.

[0100] In one embodiment, if there is no error associated with the UE's routing for the service, the first response includes at least one registration data set for the service for the UE. If the first NF receives at least one registration data set for the service for the UE, it may know that there is no error associated with the UE's routing for that service. In other words, the first NF knows that the service, such as SMS, is reachable by the UE. Thus, the first NF may take some appropriate action based on the knowledge of at least one registration data set for the service for the UE.

[0101] Errors related to the routing of the UE for the above service may be determined by 2NF.

[0102] In other embodiments, if the second NF is unable to obtain at least one registration data set for the service for the UE (e.g., no corresponding context exists) or the UE is not found, the first response may include a status code indicating CONTEXT_NOT_FOUND or USER_NOT_FOUND as the error.

[0103] The status code may be any suitable status code. In one embodiment, the status code indicating an error related to the UE's routing for the service includes at least one of a HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) status code '403 Forbidden' with a cause attribute used to indicate an error related to the UE's routing for the service, or a HTTP status code '404 Not Found' with a cause attribute used to indicate an error related to the UE's routing for the service.

[0104] The cause attribute used to indicate an error related to the UE's routing for the service may be any suitable cause attribute, such as "ABSNET_SUBSCRIBER_SM", "SUBSERVICE_BARRED", "SUBSERVICE_NOT_PROVISIONED", etc. For example, if the service is SMS and the sub-service is MT SMS, the cause attribute used to indicate an error related to the UE's routing for the service may be "ABSNET_SUBSCRIBER_SM", "MTSMS_BARRED", "MTSMS_NOT_PROVISIONED".

[0105] In one embodiment, the error related to the routing of the UE for the service includes at least one of: the UE subscribes to the service but a subservice of the service is prohibited, the UE subscribes to the service but a subservice of the service is not provided, or the UE subscribes to the service but the UE is not reachable from the service.

[0106] In one embodiment, the subservice of the service includes at least one of a mobile terminated service or a mobile originated service.

[0107] In one embodiment, the service includes a short message service.

[0108] In one embodiment, the at least one registration data set for services for the UE includes at least one of Short Message Service Function (SMSF) registration information of the UE for Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) access or SMSF registration information of the UE for non-3GPP access.

[0109] In one embodiment, the first request is an HTTP GET request and the first response is an HTTP GET response.

[0110] In block 406, optionally, the first network function may send a second request to a second network function if the error related to the UE's routing for the service indicates that the UE is subscribed to the service but the UE is not reachable from the service. The second request requests the service function to alert when the UE is reachable from the service. After receiving an alert message indicating that the UE is reachable from the service, the service function may take any suitable action based on the alert, such as, for example, resending a pending SMS.

[0111] 5 shows a flowchart of a method according to another embodiment of the present disclosure that may be performed by a device implemented in, at, or as a second network function, or a device communicatively coupled to the second network function. Thus, the device may provide means or modules for accomplishing various parts of the method 500 as well as means or modules for accomplishing other processes in cooperation with other components. Descriptions of some parts described in the above embodiments are omitted here for clarity.

[0112] In block 502, the second network function may receive a first request from the first network function requesting to receive at least one registration data set for a service for a user equipment (UE). For example, the first NF may send the first request to the second NF in block 402 of FIG. 4 and the second NF may receive the first request.

[0113] The second network function may determine whether there is an error associated with the routing of the UE for the service in block 504. The second network function may determine whether there is an error associated with the routing of the UE for the service in a variety of manners.

[0114] In one embodiment, the second network function may determine whether there is an error related to the UE's routing for the service by: obtaining subscription data for the service of the UE, the subscription data including subscription information regarding whether the UE subscribes to the service; obtaining administrative subscription data for the service of the UE, the administrative subscription data including subscription information regarding whether the UE subscribes to sub-services of the service and / or barring control policies; and determining whether there is an error related to the UE's routing for the service based on the subscription data for the service of the UE and the administrative subscription data for the service of the UE.

[0115] For example, the second network function may obtain service subscription data for the UE. The UE's service subscription data includes subscription information regarding whether the UE subscribes to a service. The second network function may obtain the UE's service subscription data from a local storage if the UE's service subscription data is stored in the local storage. The second network function may obtain the UE's service subscription data from another network function if the UE's service subscription data is stored in the other network function.

[0116] The second network function may obtain administrative subscription data for the service of the UE. The administrative subscription data for the service of the UE may include subscription information regarding whether the UE subscribes to a sub-service of the service and / or a barring control policy. The second network function may obtain the administrative subscription data for the service of the UE from a local storage if the administrative subscription data for the service of the UE is stored in the local storage. The second network function may obtain the administrative subscription data for the service of the UE from another network function if the administrative subscription data for the service of the UE is stored in the other network function.

[0117] In one embodiment, at least one of the UE's service subscription data and the UE's service administration subscription data may be obtained from a Unified Data Repository (UDR).

[0118] The 2NF may determine whether there is an error related to the UE's routing for the service based on the subscription data of the service of the UE and the administration subscription data of the service of the UE. For example, if a barring condition of a subservice of the service is met, e.g., if the UE has subscribed to SMS and MT-SMS is barred for the registered visited PLMN or for all PLMNs, an HTTP 403 error response may be returned with CAUSE:MTSMS_BARRED, which is indicated in the problem details of the HTTP 403 error response. For example, if a subservice of the service is not provided, e.g., if the UE has subscribed to SMS but MT-SMS is not provided, an HTTP 403 error response may be returned with CAUSE:MTSMS_NOT_PROVISIONED, which is indicated in the problem details of the HTTP 403 error response.

[0119] In one embodiment, the 2NF may determine whether there is an error related to the UE's routing for a service by obtaining registration data of a capability of the service for the UE, obtaining standby status data of the service for the UE, the standby status data including information regarding whether the service is reachable by the UE, and determining whether there is an error related to the UE's routing for the service based on the registration data of the capability of the service for the UE and the standby status data of the service for the UE.

[0120] For example, the second network function may obtain registration data of the functions of the service for the UE. The second network function may obtain the registration data of the functions of the service for the UE from a local storage when the registration data of the functions of the service for the UE is stored in the local storage. The second network function may obtain the registration data of the functions of the service for the UE from another network function when the registration data of the functions of the service for the UE is stored in the other network function.

[0121] The second network function may obtain waiting status data of a service for the UE. The waiting status data of the service for the UE includes information regarding whether the service is reachable by the UE. The second network function may obtain the waiting status data of the service for the UE from the local storage if the waiting status data of the service for the UE is stored in the local storage. The second network function may obtain the waiting status data of the service for the UE from another network function if the waiting status data of the service for the UE is stored in the other network function.

[0122] In one embodiment, at least one of the registration data of the capabilities of the service for the UE and the queued status data of the service for the UE is obtained from the UDR.

[0123] Based on the registration data of the capabilities of the service for the UE and the queued status data of the service for the UE, the second NF may determine whether there is an error related to the routing of the UE for the service. For example, if a subscriber absent condition is met for short messages (SM), e.g., the UE has a registered SMSF for 3GPP access, and the SMS queued status data indicates that the UE is not SMS reachable, an HTTP 404 error response is returned with CAUSE: ABSENT_SUBSCRIBER_SM, which is indicated in the problem details of the HTTP 404 error response. Based on the new cause code ABSENT_SUBSCRIBER_SM, the NF service consumer (e.g., the first NF) may further request the UDM to add a service center (SC) address to the SMS queued data list. So, once the UE is SMS reachable, the UDM will be able to alert the SC for retransmission of the pending SMS.

[0124] At block 506, the second network function may send the first response to the first network function.

[0125] In one embodiment, if there is an error related to the routing of the UE for the service, the first response includes a status code indicating the error related to the routing of the UE for the service.

[0126] In one embodiment, if there is no error associated with routing of the UE for the service, the first response includes at least one registration data set for the service for the UE.

[0127] 6 shows a flowchart of a method according to another embodiment of the present disclosure that may be performed by a device implemented in, at, or as a second network function, or a device communicatively coupled to the second network function. Thus, the device may provide means or modules for accomplishing various parts of the method 600, as well as means or modules for accomplishing other processes in cooperation with other components. Descriptions of some parts described in the above embodiments are omitted here for clarity.

[0128] At block 602, if an error associated with routing of the UE for the service indicates that the UE is subscribed to the service but the UE is not reachable from the service, the second network function may receive a second request from the first network function requesting to alert the function of the service when the UE is reachable from the service.

[0129] At block 604, the second network function may send an alert message indicating that the UE is reachable to a service function, which in one embodiment may include at least one of an SMS-GMSC, an IP-SM-GW, or an SMS router.

[0130] FIG. 7 illustrates a flow chart for obtaining SMSF registration data for 3GPP access according to one embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0131] In step 701, an NF service consumer, such as an NEF, sends a GET request (such as an HTTP GET) to a resource representing the UE's registration information for 3GPP access.

[0132] The UDM is first extended to perform the step of SMS subscription check by obtaining the SMS subscription data and SMS management subscription data of the UE from the UDR, corresponding to steps 702 and 703.

[0133] In step 702, the UDM may query the UDR to obtain SMS subscription data for the UE. The SMS subscription data may include subscriptions regarding whether the UE (or a user of the UE) has subscribed to SMS.

[0134] In step 703, the UDM may query the UDR to obtain SMS management subscription data for the UE, which may include the UE's (or the user of the UE's) subscriptions for MO-SMS and MT-SMS and barring control policies.

[0135] In step 704, if a call barring condition is met, e.g. the UE has subscribed to SMS and MT-SMS is barred for the registered visited PLMN or for all PLMNs, an HTTP 403 error response is returned indicating CAUSE:MTSMS_BARRED in the problemDetails of the HTTP 403 error response.

[0136] In step 705, if the remote service non-provision condition is met, for example if the UE has subscribed to SMS and MT-SMS is not provided, an HTTP 403 error response is returned indicating CAUSE:MTSMS_NOT_PROVISIONED in the problemDetails of the HTTP 403 error response.

[0137] The UDM is then extended to perform the steps of SMS registration check and queue status check by obtaining the UE's SMSF registration data and SMS queue status data from the UDR, corresponding to steps 706 and 707.

[0138] In step 706, the UDM may query the UDR to obtain the UE's SMSF registration data for 3GPP access.

[0139] In step 707, the UDM may query the UDR to obtain SMS pending status data of the UE, which may indicate whether the UE is SMS reachable.

[0140] In step 708, if an absent subscriber condition is met for SM, e.g. the UE has a registered SMSF for 3GPP access and the SMS waiting status data indicates that the UE is not SMS reachable, then an HTTP 404 error response is returned indicating CAUSE:ABSENT_SUBSCRIBER_SM in the problemDetails of the HTTP 404 error response.

[0141] Based on the new cause code ABSENT_SUBSCRIBER_SM, the NF service consumer may further request the UDM to add the SC address to the SMS waiting list, so that once the UE becomes SMS reachable, the UDM will be able to alert the SC about retransmission of the pending SMS.

[0142] In step 709, if the normal response conditions are met, e.g., the UE has a registered SMSF for 3GPP access and the SMS waiting status data indicates that the UE is SMS reachable, then an HTTP 200 OK response is returned with the SMSF registration data for 3GPP access.

[0143] The above mentioned cause codes MTSMS_BARRED, MTSMS_NOT_PROVISIONED or ABSENT_SUBSCRIBER_SM are not supported in the 3GPP protocol as described in 3GPP TS29.503V17.1.0, therefore the proposed embodiment allows to extend the 3GPP protocol to indicate such conditions to the NF service consumer.

[0144] In one embodiment, Table 6.2.3.6.3.3-3 of 3GPP TS29.503V17.1.0 may be modified as follows: [Table 7]

[0145] FIG. 8 illustrates a flow chart for obtaining SMSF registration data for non-3GPP access according to one embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0146] In step 801, a NF service consumer, such as a NEF, sends a GET request (such as an HTTP GET) to a resource representing the registration information of a UE for non-3GPP access.

[0147] The UDM is first extended to perform the step of SMS subscription check by obtaining the SMS subscription data and SMS management subscription data of the UE from the UDR, corresponding to steps 802 and 803.

[0148] In step 802, the UDM may query the UDR to obtain SMS subscription data for the UE. The SMS subscription data may include subscriptions regarding whether the UE (or a user of the UE) has subscribed to SMS.

[0149] In step 803, the UDM may query the UDR to obtain SMS management subscription data for the UE. The SMS management subscription data may include the UE's (or the user of the UE's) subscriptions for MO-SMS and MT-SMS and barring control policies.

[0150] In step 804, if a call barring condition is met, e.g. the UE has subscribed to SMS and MT-SMS is barred for the registered visited PLMN or for all PLMNs, an HTTP 403 error response is returned indicating CAUSE:MTSMS_BARRED in the problemDetails of the HTTP 403 error response.

[0151] In step 805, if the remote service non-provision condition is met, for example if the UE has subscribed to SMS and MT-SMS is not provided, an HTTP 403 error response is returned and indicates CAUSE:MTSMS_NOT_PROVISIONED in the problemDetails of the HTTP 403 error response.

[0152] The UDM is then extended to perform the steps of SMS registration check and queue status check by obtaining the UE's SMSF registration data and SMS queue status data from the UDR, corresponding to steps 806 and 807.

[0153] In step 806, the UDM may query the UDR to obtain SMSF registration data of the UE for non-3GPP access.

[0154] In step 807, the UDM may query the UDR to obtain SMS pending status data of the UE. The SMS pending status data may indicate whether the UE is SMS reachable.

[0155] In step 808, if an absent subscriber condition is met for SM, e.g. the UE has a registered SMSF for 3GPP access and the SMS waiting status data indicates that the UE is not SMS reachable, then an HTTP 404 error response is returned indicating CAUSE:ABSENT_SUBSCRIBER_SM in the problemDetails of the HTTP 404 error response.

[0156] Based on the new cause code ABSENT_SUBSCRIBER_SM, the NF service consumer may further request the UDM to add the SC address to the SMS waiting list, so that once the UE becomes SMS reachable, the UDM will be able to alert the SC about retransmission of the pending SMS.

[0157] In step 809, if the normal response conditions are met, e.g., the UE has a registered SMSF for non-3GPP access and the SMS waiting status data indicates that the UE is SMS reachable, then an HTTP 200 OK response is returned with the SMSF registration data for non-3GPP access.

[0158] The above mentioned cause codes MTSMS_BARRED, MTSMS_NOT_PROVISIONED or ABSENT_SUBSCRIBER_SM are not supported in the 3GPP protocol as described in 3GPP TS29.503V17.1.0, therefore the proposed embodiment allows to extend the 3GPP protocol to indicate such conditions to the NF service consumer.

[0159] In one embodiment, Table 6.2.3.7.3.3-3 of 3GPP TS29.503V17.1.0 may be modified as follows: [Table 8]

[0160] FIG. 9 illustrates a flowchart for obtaining SMSF registration data for non-3GPP access and SMSF registration data for 3GPP access according to one embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0161] In step 901, an NF service consumer, such as an NEF, sends a GET request (such as an HTTP GET) to a resource representing the registration information of a UE with a query parameter of registration-data-names for SMSFs for both 3GPP access and non-3GPP access.

[0162] The UDM is first extended to perform the step of SMS subscription check by obtaining the SMS subscription data and SMS management subscription data of the UE from the UDR, corresponding to steps 902 and 903.

[0163] In step 902, the UDM may query the UDR to obtain SMS subscription data for the UE. The SMS subscription data may include subscriptions regarding whether the UE (or a user of the UE) has subscribed to SMS.

[0164] In step 903, the UDM may query the UDR to obtain SMS management subscription data for the UE. The SMS management subscription data may include the UE's (or the user of the UE's) subscriptions for MO-SMS and MT-SMS and barring control policies.

[0165] In step 904, if a call barring condition is met, e.g. the UE has subscribed to SMS and MT-SMS is barred for the registered visited PLMN or for all PLMNs, an HTTP 403 error response is returned indicating CAUSE:MTSMS_BARRED in the problemDetails of the HTTP 403 error response.

[0166] In step 905, if the remote service non-provision condition is met, for example if the UE has subscribed to SMS and MT-SMS is not provided, an HTTP 403 error response is returned and indicates CAUSE:MTSMS_NOT_PROVISIONED in the problemDetails of the HTTP 403 error response.

[0167] The UDM is then extended to perform the steps of SMS registration check and queue status check by obtaining the UE's SMSF registration data and SMS queue status data from the UDR, corresponding to steps 906, 907 and 908.

[0168] In step 906, the UDM may query the UDR to obtain the UE's SMSF registration data for 3GPP access.

[0169] In step 907, the UDM may query the UDR to obtain SMSF registration data of the UE for non-3GPP access.

[0170] In another embodiment, steps 906 and 907 may be a single GET operation on the UDR to obtain both the SMSF registration data for 3GPP access and the SMSF registration data for non-3GPP access.

[0171] In step 908, the UDM may query the UDR to obtain SMS pending status data of the UE. The SMS pending status data may indicate whether the UE is SMS reachable.

[0172] In step 909, if an absent subscriber condition is met for SM, e.g. the UE has a registered SMSF for non-3GPP access and / or 3GPP access and the SMS waiting status data indicates that the UE is not SMS reachable, an HTTP 404 error response is returned with CAUSE:ABSENT_SUBSCRIBER_SM indicated in the problemDetails of the HTTP 404 error response.

[0173] Based on the new cause code ABSENT_SUBSCRIBER_SM, the NF service consumer may further request the UDM to add the SC address to the SMS waiting list, so that once the UE is SMS reachable, the UDM will be able to alert the SC about retransmission of the pending SMS.

[0174] In step 910, if the normal response conditions are met, e.g. the UE has a registered SMSF for 3GPP access and / or a registered SMSF for non-3GPP access and the SMS waiting status data indicates that the UE is reachable by SMS, an HTTP 200 OK response is returned with the SMSF registration data for 3GPP access and the SMSF registration data for non-3GPP access, or with one of them when the SMS waiting status data indicates that the UE is reachable for either 3GPP access or non-3GPP access.

[0175] The above mentioned cause codes MTSMS_BARRED, MTSMS_NOT_PROVISIONED or ABSENT_SUBSCRIBER_SM are not supported in the 3GPP protocol as described in 3GPP TS29.503V17.1.0, therefore the proposed embodiment allows to extend the 3GPP protocol to indicate such conditions to the NF service consumer.

[0176] In one embodiment, Table 6.2.3.9.3.1-3 of 3GPP TS29.503V17.1.0 may be modified as follows: [Table 9]

[0177] In one embodiment, Table 6.2.7.3-1 of 3GPP TS29.503V17.1.0 may be modified as follows: [Table 10]

[0178] In one embodiment, the proposed solution may extend the cause codes (e.g. HTTP status codes) for the interface that GETs SMSF registration information as SMS routing information: 403, CAUSE: MTSMS_BARRED for cases where the UE has an SMS subscription but MT-SMS is barred for all or some of the registered visited PLMNs. - 403, CAUSE: MTSMS_NOT_PROVISIONED for cases where the UE has SMS subscription but MT-SMS is not provided 404, CAUSE: ABSENT_SUBSCRIBER_SM for cases where the SMS waiting data indicates that the UE has an SMS subscribed but the UE is not SMS reachable.

[0179] Embodiments herein may provide many advantages, a non-exhaustive list of examples of which follows: In some embodiments herein, the second network function may send a precise status code to the first network function indicating an error related to the UE's routing for the service. For example, for an SMS routing information request, a precise cause such as ABSENT_SUBSCRIBER_SM, MTSMS_BARRED, MTSMS_NOT_PROVISIONED may be sent to the UDM UECM GET service consumer. In some embodiments herein, the NF consumer may differentiate between error conditions. In some embodiments herein, the proposed solution may avoid unnecessary signaling when the UE is not reachable for a service, such as SMS. In some embodiments herein, the first network function may request the second network function to alert the service function when the UE is reachable for the service. For example, the service consumer could ask the UDM to add the SC address to the SMS waiting data list. Once the UE is reachable for the SMS, the UDM could alert the SC for pending SMS retransmissions. Some embodiments herein may optimize services such as SMS delivery.
