AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

The production of polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) through direct polymerization methods faces challenges with intense foaming during the esterification reaction, leading to operational inefficiencies and slow reaction rates, particularly when using biomass-derived or chemically recycled raw materials.

Method used

A composition of terephthalic acid with a specific surface area of 1,000 to 3,500 cm²/g and an average particle size of 30 to 300 μm, combined with 1,4-butanediol, is used to suppress foaming and enhance esterification reactivity, allowing for stable and efficient PBT production.

Benefits of technology

The composition enables increased production volume, faster reaction times, and more stable PBT production by suppressing foaming and enhancing the esterification reaction rate.

Abstract

To provide a composition comprising terephthalic acid and 1,4-butanediol that can suppress foaming in an esterification reaction vessel and can perform an esterification reaction with superior reactivity in producing polybutylene terephthalate by esterification using the composition, and a method for producing polybutylene terephthalate using the composition.SOLUTION: There is provided a composition comprising terephthalic acid and 1,4-butanediol, wherein the terephthalic acid is in a particle form having a BET specific surface area, measured by a krypton adsorption method, of 1,000 cm2 / g or more and 3,500 cm2 / g or less, and an average particle diameter D50, determined by sieve analysis in accordance with ASTM D1921-06 and calculated in accordance with ISO 9276-2:2014, of 30 μm or more and 300 μm or less. There is also provided a method for producing polybutylene terephthalate using the composition.SELECTED DRAWING: None
