Abstract
A model developed from a very ancient Eastern musical instrument (the Ney) to finally allow the playing of Western scales and increase the instrument's expressive capacity. The invention relates to a model that facilitates Ney playing techniques and simultaneously allows the playing of notes not reached on the traditional Ney. This is achieved by adding three extra holes and using beeswax (or modeling clay) to cover the unused holes. This model (fig. 2) is made from a reed, plastic, or metal stem, which has eight holes on the front and two holes on the back; the dimensions are shown in the drawing (fig. 5). For the musician to play oriental scales in the same way as the traditional instrument (fig. 3), the first hole (no. 1) and hole no. 5 must be sealed with wax. In this way the musician closes the six remaining holes with the fingers of the right hand at the bottom (index finger on hole #4, middle finger on hole #3, ring finger on hole #2) and the three fingers of the left hand at the top (index finger on hole #8, middle finger on hole #7, ring finger on hole #6) and closes the two holes at the back with the thumb of the left hand (The thumb can close both holes #9 and #10 simultaneously or close only the upper one #9). To play Western scales (fig. 4), the musician only needs to cover hole #4 with wax (and all other holes must be unwaxed). The musician then covers the holes at the top in the same way as before and covers the remaining holes as follows: index finger on hole #5, middle finger on hole #3, ring finger on hole #2, and little finger on hole #1. This instrument model is innovative to allow the musician to play both Eastern and Western music.
