Abstract

An apparatus and methods are provided for a relief slot disposed in a barrel to receive a gas block of a direct gas operated firearm. The relief slot comprises a first slot portion on each end of a second slot portion. The first slot portions receive a coil pin to locate and bias the gas block onto the barrel. The second slot portion relieves pressure on a bore inside the barrel by the coil pin. The second slot portion can be milled perpendicularly between the first slot portions or can be cut in a single toolpath that is blended with the first slot portions. The second slot portion generally has a larger size than the first slot portions to form a space between the second slot portion and the coil pin, thereby preventing the coil pin from causing a deformation within the bore.
