AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

In massive MIMO systems, the feedback overhead of channel state information (CSI) is substantial due to high dimensionality, leading to distortion in CSI reconstruction at the base station (gNB) due to insufficient CSI-reference signals (CSI-RS) and lossy compression.

Method used

A method for joint adjustment of CSI-RS configuration and CSI feedback configuration is provided, where a device receives CSI-RS and generates sets of codewords based on CSI-RS and compression models, and transmits these sets along with generation information to another device for reconstructing CSI and selecting optimal configurations based on performance metrics and thresholds.

Benefits of technology

This approach reduces downlink and uplink overheads while maintaining CSI acquisition performance, by optimizing CSI-RS density and feedback compression ratios based on real-time channel monitoring.

Abstract

Example embodiments of the present disclosure provide a signaling framework for channel state information (CSI) -reference signal (RS) configuration and CSI feedback. In an example method, a second device receives, from a first device, a third number of sets of codewords and generation information for codewords. The second device generates the third number of reconstructed CSI based on the third number of sets of codewords, the generation information for codewords, and the second number of decompression models deployed at the second device. The second device selects a CSI-RS configuration and a CSI feedback configuration based on the third number of reconstructed CSIs, a performance metric, and a predefined performance threshold. In this way, the framework is benefited from artificial intelligence / machine learning (AI / ML) -based CSI refinement capability to reduce the downlink and uplink overheads by jointly adjusting the CSI-RS configuration, CSI compression ratio and CSI feedback 2-side models.

Description

CSI-RS CONFIGURATION AND CSI FEEDBACKFIELD

[0001] Example embodiments of the present disclosure generally relate to the field of communication, and in particular, to devices, methods, apparatuses, and a computer readable medium associated with channel state information (CSI) -reference signal (RS) configuration and CSI feedback, especially for joint adjustment of CSI-RS configuration and CSI feedback configuration.BACKGROUND

[0002] MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) system can utilize multiple independent channels on the same time-frequency resources to achieve transmission capabilities several times that of single-antenna system. The BS with massive MIMO needs to monitor the downlink channel state information (CSI) in real-time to fully exploit the spatial multiplexing gain. In FDD (Frequency Division Duplex) systems, the UE needs to estimate and report the downlink CSI to the gNB through the uplink control channel, which can be substantial due to the high dimension of CSI in massive MIMO systems.

[0003] To reduce the feedback overheads, UEs employ compression and quantization techniques on the CSI. Conversely, the received compressed CSI needs to be reconstructed to its original form at gNB. Obviously, there are two sources of distortion when the gNB acquires the true CSI, one from inaccurate channel estimation due to insufficient reference signals (CSI-RS) , the other from lossy CSI compression.SUMMARY

[0044] As used herein, the term “network” , “communication network” or “data network” refers to a network following any suitable communication standards, such as long term evolution (LTE) , LTE-advanced (LTE-A) , wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) , high-speed packet access (HSPA) , narrow band Internet of things (NB-IoT) , wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) and so on. Furthermore, the communications between a terminal device and a network device / element in the communication network may be performed according to any suitable generation communication protocols, including, but not limited to, the fourth generation (4G) , 4.5G, the future fifth generation (5G) , IEEE 802.11 communication protocols, and / or any other protocols either currently known or to be developed in the future. Embodiments of the present disclosure may be applied in various communication systems. Given the rapid development in communications, there will of course also be future type communication technologies and systems with which the present disclosure may be embodied. It should not be seen as limiting the scope of the present disclosure to only the aforementioned system.

[0045] As used herein, the term “network device” refers to a node in a communication network via which a terminal device receives services (e.g., positioning services) therefrom. The network device may refer to a core network device or access network device, such as base station (BS) or an access point (AP) or a transmission and reception point (TRP) , for example, a node B (NodeB or NB) , an evolved NodeB (eNodeB or eNB) , a NR NB (also referred to as a gNB) , a remote radio unit (RRU) , a radio header (RH) , a remote radio head (RRH) , a WiFi device, a relay, a low power node such as a femto, a pico, and so forth, depending on the applied terminology and technology. In the following description, the terms “network device” , “AP device” , “AP” and “access point” may be used interchangeably.

[0046] The term “terminal device” refers to any end device that may be capable of wireless communication. By way of example rather than limitation, a terminal device may also be referred to as a communication device, user equipment (UE) , a Subscriber Station (SS) , a Portable Subscriber Station, a Mobile Station (MS) , a station (STA) or station device, or an Access Terminal (AT) . The terminal device may include, but not limited to, a mobile phone, a cellular phone, a smart phone, voice over IP (VoIP) phones, wireless local loop phones, a tablet, a wearable terminal device, a personal digital assistant (PDA) , portable computers, desktop computer, image capture terminal devices such as digital cameras, gaming terminal devices, music storage and playback appliances, vehicle-mounted wireless terminal devices, wireless endpoints, mobile stations, laptop-embedded equipment (LEE) , laptop-mounted equipment (LME) , USB dongles, smart devices, wireless customer-premises equipment (CPE) , an Internet of Things (IoT) device, a watch or other wearable, a head-mounted display (HMD) , a vehicle, a drone, a medical device and applications (for example, remote surgery) , an industrial device and applications (for example, a robot and / or other wireless devices operating in an industrial and / or an automated processing chain contexts) , a consumer electronics device, a device operating on commercial and / or industrial wireless networks, and the like. In the following description, the terms “station” , “station device” , “STA” , “terminal device” , “communication device” , “terminal” , “user equipment” and “UE” may be used interchangeably.

[0047] As discussed above, to reduce the feedback overheads, UEs compress and transmit the channel state information (CSI) , and the gNB reconstructs the received compressed CSI. when the gNB acquires the CSI, there are two sources of distortion. One is caused by inaccurate channel estimation due to insufficient reference signals (CSI-RS) , and another is due to lossy compression of CSI.

[0048] 3GPP (Third Generation Partnership Project) has approved a new study item (SI) to explore the benefits of augmenting the CSI feedback by artificial intelligence / machine learning (AI / ML) techniques, e.g., overhead reduction, improved accuracy, prediction, etc.

[0049] Current approaches for CSI feedback assume that the estimated CSI is accurate enough to be used as the ground truth. However, even with the utmost optimization of the CSI feedback module, there is still CSI acquisition loss, which is introduced by channel estimation error at UE. The configuration of the CSI-RS is of paramount importance in achieving accurate channel estimation. 3GPP has defined various configurations for CSI-RS to adapt to different propagation environments. For instance, in channels with strong and long multipath, densely deployed CSI-RS is required to capture the frequency-selective characteristics.

[0050] Within the context of AI / ML-based CSI feedback framework, there is an opportunity to leverage AI / ML models to enhance the quality of CSI. These AI / ML models is capable of learning from large amount of data to find the pattern to compensate the potential distortion caused by the imperfect channel estimation, which opens up new possibilities for optimizing the configuration of CSI-RS.

[0051] Even though AI / ML-based scheme brings the chance to mitigate the channel estimation loss resulting from sparse CSI-RS, the CSI refinement capability of AI / ML model is obviously limited. For example, in scenarios where the channel exhibits significant frequency selectivity, AI / ML-based CSI feedback scheme still faces challenges in compensating for the channel estimation distortion caused by excessively sparse CSI-RS. When dealing with a particular channel environment, a tradeoff emerges between the downlink and uplink overhead expenditure, which are respectively determined by the CSI-RS configuration and CSI feedback compression / reconstruction models. For example, in a severely dynamic RF channel, a high CSI-RS density contributes to a small channel estimation error at the sacrifice of downlink efficiency, which in turn makes rooms for CSI feedback distortion with high Compression Ratio (CR) (i.e. small feedback bits) . On contrary, in a relative flat channel, a low CSI-RS density combined with high CR can still provide a decent CSI acquisition performance.

[0052] Embodiments of the present disclosure provide a solution for channel state information (CSI) -reference signal (RS) configuration and CSI feedback, e.g., for joint adjustment of CSI-RS configuration and CSI feedback configuration. Procedures and exchanged signaling to identify the appropriate combination of CSI-RS configuration and CSI feedback configuration jointly based on monitored channel are depicted. Detailed description of the signaling framework to enable joint adjustment of CSI-RS configuration for downlink and CSI feedback configuration for uplink per channel monitoring.

[0053] For illustrative purposes, principles and example embodiments of the present disclosure will be described below with reference to FIG. 1 to FIG. 10. However, it is to be noted that these embodiments are given to enable the skilled in the art to understand inventive concepts of the present disclosure and implement the solution as proposed herein, and not intended to limit scope of the present application in any way.

[0059] FIG. 2 illustrates an example of a process flow 200 of the joint adjustment of CSI-RS configuration and CSI feedback configuration in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For ease of understanding, the process flow 200 will be described with reference to FIG. 1. It would be appreciated that although the process flow 200 has been described referring to the application scenario 100 of FIG. 1, this process flow 200 may be likewise applied to other similar communication scenarios.

[0061] The first device 110 receives (203) the at least one slot comprising a first number of CSI-RS from the second device 120, and generates (204) , based on the first number of CSI-RS and a second number of CSI compression models deployed at the first device, a third number of sets of codewords, wherein the third number is not larger than the first number multiplied by the second number. In some embodiments, the first device 110 may obtain the first number of CSIs based on the first number of CSI-RS, and may feed the first number of CSIs into respective ones of the second number of CSI compression models to generate the third number of sets of codewords.

[0062] The first device 110 transmit (205) , to the second device 120, the third number of sets of codewords and generation information for codewords 206, where the generation information for codewords indicates a CSI-RS among the first number of CSI-RS and a CSI compression model among the second number of CSI compression models based on which a set of the third number of sets of codewords is generated.

[0063] The second device 120 receives (207) , from the first device 110, the third number of sets of codewords and the generation information for codewords 206, and generates (208) the third number of reconstructed CSI based on the third number of sets of codewords and the generation information for codewords 206, as well as the second number of decompression models deployed at the second device 120.

[0064] In some embodiments, the second device 120 may determine, for a set of the third number of sets of codewords and based on the generation information for codewords, a CSI compression model among the second number of CSI compression models which generates the set of codewords. Then, the second device 120 may feed the set of codewords into a decompression model corresponding to the determined CSI decompression model to generate a reconstructed CSI.

[0065] The second device 120 selects (209) a CSI-RS configuration and a CSI feedback configuration based on the third number of reconstructed CSIs, a performance metric, and a predefined performance threshold. In some embodiments, the second device 120 may obtain CSI-RS configurations associated with the third number of reconstructed CSIs and compression ratios of CSI feedback configurations associated with the third number of reconstructed CSIs. The second device 120 may determine, based on densities of the associated CSI-RS configurations and the compression ratios of the associated CSI feedback configurations, a benchmark reconstructed CSI from the third number of reconstructed CSIs.

[0066] In some embodiments, the second device 120 may calculate, based on the benchmark reconstructed CSI and a performance metric, the performance scores for the third number of reconstructed CSIs. The second device 120 may select, based on the performance scores and a predefined performance threshold, a CSI-RS configuration and a CSI feedback configuration.

[0067] In view of the above, some embodiments of the disclosure provide a signaling framework to enable joint adjustment of CSI-RS configuration for downlink and CSI feedback configuration for uplink per channel monitoring. Such signaling framework is provided to benefit from AI / ML-based CSI refinement capability to reduce the downlink and uplink overheads by jointly adjusting the CSI-RS configuration, CSI compression ratio and CSI feedback 2-side models.

[0068] FIG. 3 illustrates another example framework 300 of the joint adjustment of CSI-RS configuration and CSI feedback configuration in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. In FIG. 3, the detailed signaling for joint adjustment of the CSI-RS configuration and CSI feedback configuration in AI / ML-based CSI feedback scenario is depicted. The framework 300 may be implemented by interworking between a UE and a gNB which respectively may be an example of the first device 110 and the second device 120 in FIGS. 1 and 2.

[0069] It is to be considered that the network provides M optional CSI-RS configurations (characterized by resource mapping schemes, RS density and Code Division Multiplexing (CDM) type, etc. ) , while the UE maintains N optional CSI feedback configurations (also called feedback models and characterized by computational complexity of AI / ML models, compression ratio in CSI feedback, etc. ) . Furthermore, it is assumed that N compression models (hereinafter may also be referred to as encoders) on the UE and N decompression models (hereinafter may also be referred to as reconstruction models or decoders) on the network have been pre-trained and pre-aligned, for example on compression ratio, at training stage beforehand. Also, M CSI-RS configurations have been agreed by both ends. It will be described in detail below in conjunction with FIG. 3 that the UE provides indications to the network in which conditions it requests the change of current configurations and how the network responds to the UE’s request.

[0070] At 301, CSI feedback may be ongoing from UE 31 to gNB 32.302 and 303 describe the triggering mechanism for joint adjustment of CSI-RS configuration and CSI feedback model. At 302, the UE 31 may monitor the channel environment per a channel-monitoring metric. When the channel-monitoring metric meets a predefined condition, UE 31 will trigger the change of current CSI-RS configuration and CSI feedback model.

[0071] There may be two options for implementing the channel monitoring operation, i.e., instantaneous channel monitoring and statistical channel monitoring. by utilizing the CSI as input data, several classification techniques, such as Support Vector Machine (SVM) , K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) , and Neural Network (NN) -based schemes, have demonstrated impressive results in channel identification tasks. Even operating at a Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) of 0dB, these techniques can achieve an accuracy over 95%. The channel identifier can be utilized to detect channel variations and initiate the joint adjustment of the CSI-RS configuration and CSI feedback model.

[0072] Instantaneous channel monitoring requires a large amount of training data and associated labels. Under real deployment, it is not necessary to make decision on a per CSI sample basis. Instead, multiple CSI samples can be collected over a specific time window or interval. These samples are then analyzed to compute their distribution characteristics, such as mean, variance, or other statistical metrics. By comparing the distribution of the current CSI samples to the previously observed features, it becomes possible to identify any deviations or changes in the channel environment.

[0073] At 303, the UE 31 may request the adjustment of the CSI-RS configuration and feedback model if drifted channel environment is detected. The UE 31 may compare distribution of current CSI samples and distribution of previous CSI samples, for example over a specific time window or interval, and may identify deviation in the channel environment based on the comparison result. The UE 31 then may determine whether the channel environment satisfies a predefined update condition, based on the identified deviation. The UE 31 may start a request to gNB 32 to adjust CSI-RS configuration and CSI feedback model if the channel environment satisfies a predefined update condition.

[0074] Next, 304-308 describe network operations, UE operations and signaling exchange procedures to collect evaluation results for adjustment decision. The gNB 32 may receive the request to update a current CSI-RS configuration and a current CSI feedback configuration in channel environment from the UE 31. At 304, the gNB 32 may select M candidate CSI-RS configurations and generate L training slots carrying these CSI-RS.

[0075] The gNB 32 may select M candidate CSI-RS configurations, which are characterized by the resource mapping scheme, CDM type and density etc. Alternatively, the gNB 32 may determine available CSI-RS configurations in the channel environment, and may select M candidate CSI-RS configurations among the available CSI-RS configurations based on at least one of the resource mapping scheme, CDM type and density etc.

[0076] After the selection for candidate CSI-RS configurations, the gNB 32 may generate L training slots carrying the M CSI-RS. To transmit all possible types of CSI-RS to UEs 31 within the shortest time, the gNB 32 may multiplex M different types of CSI-RS into consecutive L slots (also called training slots) . The implementations of CSI-RS resource mapping will be described below in conjunction with FIGS 4A and 4B.

[0077] FIG. 4A illustrates an example arrangement 400A for CSI-RS in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. In the arrangement 400A, the gNB 32 may multiplex M CSI-RS into M different slots, i.e., one CSI-RS to one slot. For example, the CSI-RS 1 may be arranged into the Slot 1 as shown in FIG. 4A. The advantage of the arrangement 400A is that the respective CSI-RS can be easily identified.

[0078] FIG. 4B illustrates another example arrangement 400B for CSI-RS in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. Such implementation enables a more compact way to place CSI-RS. In the arrangement 400B, different CSI-RS may occupy different subcarriers, symbols and ports as long as these CSI-RS are located at different resources (e.g., in frequency / time / port dimension) . For example, CSI-RS 1, CSI-RS 2 and CSI-RS 3 may be arranged at different symbols in Slot 1. This CSI-RS mapping scheme for training slots leads to less time occupation, which contributes to its deployment under dynamic channel condition.

[0079] At 305, the gNB 32 may send L training slots with all candidate CSI-RS configurations. In addition to the generated L training slots carrying the M CSI-RS, the gNB 32 may transmit a radio resource control (RRC) signaling indicating the M CSI-RS configurations associated with the M CSI-RS. The gNB 32 may transmit information about the specific CSI-RS configuration in each time slot through RRC signaling to the UE 31. Furthermore, the UE 31 may get, from the gNB 32 arrangement information for CSI-RS indicating arrangement of the M CSI-RS in the generated L training slots.

[0080] Referring back to FIG 3, at 306, the UE 31 may obtain M CSIs based on training slots and generate M*N sets of codewords with N models. The UE 31 may receive the training slots and exploit each of them to achieve channel estimation and CSI preprocessing (such as singular value decomposition (SVD) decomposition) . M candidate CSIs associated with the M CSI-RS configurations can be obtained. The UE 31 then may feed each candidate CSI into N feasible CSI compression models (i.e. encoder) to generate N sets of codewords.

[0081] As discussed above, N CSI compression models may be deployed at the UE 31 and N CSI decompression models may be deployed at the gNB 32. Both the N CSI compression models and the N CSI decompression models may have been pre-trained and pre-aligned, for example on compression ratio, at training stage beforehand.

[0082] A CSI compression model among the N CSI compression models deployed at the UE 31 may correspond to one of the N CSI decompression models deployed at the gNB 32. A CSI feedback configuration may indicate a CSI compression model and a CSI decompression model corresponding to the CSI compression model. In other words, a CSI feedback configuration may comprise a combination or a pair of CSI compression model and CSI decompression model corresponding to each other.

[0083] Alternatively or additionally, a CSI compression model among the N CSI compression models deployed at the UE 31 having a compression ratio above a first threshold may correspond to a CSI decompression model among the N CSI decompression models deployed at the gNB 32 having a compression ratio above a second threshold. The first threshold at the UE side and the second threshold at the gNB side may be equal or similar, and they may indicate that the CSI compression model and CSI decompression model corresponding each other have a higher degree of compression ratio. Meanwhile, a CSI compression model among the N CSI compression models having a compression ratio below a third threshold may correspond to a CSI decompression model among the N CSI decompression models having a compression ratio below a fourth threshold. The third threshold at the UE side and the fourth threshold at the gNB side may be equal or similar, and they may indicate that the CSI compression model and CSI decompression model corresponding each other have a lower degree of compression ratio.

[0084] FIG. 5 illustrates the example generation process 500 for codewords in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The example given by FIG. 5 exemplary comprises two CSIs as input and two encoders (i.e., CSI compression models) for ease of understanding. The compression models may be characterized by the model complexity, model type and compression ratio (CR) etc. Different models would lead to different reconstruction performances at gNB side. As there are M candidates CSIs and N models, M*N sets of codewords in total may be obtained.

[0085] As shown in FIG. 5 by solid lines, CSI 1 may be input into Encoder 1 and Encoder 2 to generate Codeword 1 and Codeword 3 respectively. Likewise, as shown in FIG. 5 by dotted lines, CSI 2 may be input into Encoder 1 and Encoder 2 to generate Codeword 2 and Codeword 4 respectively. Thus, a total of four codewords can be generated, based on two CSI and two encoders. Alternatively, the total number of the generated codewords might less than the number of the input CSIs multiplied by the number of encoders. This might be because at least one of CISs is not input into each one of encoders.

[0086] Referring back to FIG 3, at 307, the UE 31 may send M*N sets of codewords and associated configuration signaling to the gNB 32. The associated signaling may indicate related CSI-RS and feedback model. In other words, the gNB 32 may get generation information for codewords indicating a CSI-RS among the M CSI-RS and a CSI compression model among the N CSI compression models based on which a set of the M*N sets of codewords is generated.

[0087] At 308, the gNB 32 may reconstruct all M*N CSIs and determine a benchmark among them. The gNB 32 may use corresponding decoders (achieved by referring to the associated signaling) to respectively generate M*N reconstructed CSIs. It is worth noting that successful collaborations between UE encoder and gNB decoder are completed prior to the discussed adjustment phase. Since there is no original CSI shared from UE 31, the gNB 32 may select a reconstructed CSI as the benchmark according to a benchmark selection criterion. A simple selection criterion is to take the one corresponding to the densest CSI-RS and lowest CR (i.e. largest feedback bits) as the benchmark. Other selection criterions are also possible and are not limited by the disclosure.

[0088] Below, 309-311 describe selection rule given collected evaluation results and indications of selected CSI-RS configuration and feedback model. At 309, the gNB 32 may select the combination with least downlink and uplink resource consumption while satisfying pre-defined performance threshold. By comparing each reconstructed CSI with the benchmark in terms of a performance metric (such as squared generalized cosine similarity (SGCS) ) , gNB 32 may obtain M*N values with respect to all combinations of CSI-RS configuration and CSI feedback model. Hereinafter The M*N values may also be referred to as performance scores. The gNB 32 then may select the combination that minimizes downlink and uplink resource consumption while satisfying pre-defined performance thresholds.

[0089] At 309, there are M*N reconstructed CSIs but without knowledge about the baseline (i.e. ideal CSI) , and one among them should be firstly select as the benchmark. Here, the reconstructed CSI corresponding to the CSI-RS with highest density and feedback with lowest compression ratio (i.e. largest feedback bits) can be selected as the benchmark. Then, the similarity between each of reconstructed CSIs and the benchmark is calculated and collected into a performance table with respect to each combination. After establishing a threshold, the sparsest CSI-RS combined with the highest CR can be selected as the configuration to use while ensuring that the performance exceeds the threshold.

[0090] The selection of the threshold can be dynamically adjusted by the network based on at least one of various factors including the training dataset, uplink resources and tasks. For instance, when tasks are not sensitive to beam directions, a lower threshold can be chosen; otherwise, a higher threshold is required. Supposing that there are 2 options for CSI-RS density (high, low) and 2 options for CR (high, low) , then following table can be constructed. If the threshold is set as 0.8, the combination #3 is selected to use. When the threshold is set as 0.77, the combination #4 is selected.

[0091] Table 1. an example of a table for configuration combination selection

[0092] At 310, the gNB 32 may indicate the selected combination. The gNB may send the signaling indicating the selected combination of CSI-RS configuration and feedback model to UE 31 for in-field deployment.

[0093] At 311, the UE 31 may indicate agreement on selected CSI-RS configuration and feedback model. The UE 31 may indicate agreement on use of the selected CSI-RS configuration and CSI feedback model.

[0094] Moreover, at 312, The UE 31 and gNB 32 may perform CSI acquisition with updated CSI-RS configuration and CSI feedback model. The UE 31 and gNB 32 may collaborate to achieve CSI acquisition with updated configurations.

[0095] Simulation results to prove that the joint adjustment of CSI-RS configuration and feedback model can contribute to downlink overhead and uplink overhead reduction without sacrifice of CSI acquisition performance are discussed below.

[0096] A mmWave testbed with 32Tx and 4Rx in laboratory environment is built. Major parameters of the system are listed in Table 2.

[0097] Table 2. Configuration parameters of mmWave testbed

[0098] FIG. 6 illustrates the Line-of-Sight (LOS) -Non-Line-of-Sight (NLOS) -hybrid channel environment setup in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. as shown in FIG. 6, different rotating obstacles between the Tx and Rx are placed, in order to create diverse and dynamic propagation environments.

[0099] Three different types of channel environments are constructed. One is Channel type 1, where two rotating metal plates are placed between Tx and Rx. The two plates have different rotation directions and periods. This setup leads to very severe channel with serious signal occlusion in most of the time. Another one is Channel type 2, where only one rotating metal plate is placed between Tx (close to Tx) and Rx. This setup leads to a channel with slight signal occlusion in half of the time. Further one is Channel type 3, where No metal plate is placed between Tx and Rx. This setup leads to a flat channel with LOS propagation.

[0100] CSI-RS configurations are differentiated by the CSI-RS density. There are two optional densities for CSI-RS, config #1 with an interval of 8 subcarriers in frequency division (FD) and config #2 with an interval of 24 subcarriers in FD. For CSI feedback model configurations, as UEs are commonly computational-capability-limited while the network has sufficient computational capability, three types of encoders and one type of decoder are defined. The specific model structures are listed in Table 3.

[0101] Table 3. CSI feedback model configurations

[0102] Table 4 gives the CSI acquisition performance with respect to each combination of CSI-RS configuration and CSI feedback model.

[0103] Table 4. Test results

[0104] As can be seen from Table 4, the combination selection depends on the pre-configured performance threshold. For channel type 1, only the combination of CSI-RS with high density and feedback model with large feedback bits (500bits) can meet the SGCS performance threshold of 0.8. But if the SGCS threshold is reduced to 0.77, there are two optional combinations, high-density CSI-RS together with medium feedback bits (100bits) and low-density CSI-RS together with high feedback bits (500bits) .

[0105] For channel type 2, four combinations can meet the SGCS performance of 0.8, the combination of CSI-RS with low density and feedback model with medium feedback bits (100bits) is selected to use. When the SGCS threshold is 0.77, the combination of high-density CSI-RS and small feedback bits (30bits) is also a good choice.

[0106] Furthermore, for channel type 3, all combinations can meet the SGCS performance of 0.8. The NW can choose the one consuming least downlink and uplink resources (i.e., CSI-RS with low density and feedback model with small feedback bits) .

[0107] FIG. 7 illustrates a flowchart of an example method 700 implemented at a first device in accordance with some other embodiments of the present disclosure. It is to be understood that the method 700 may include additional blocks not shown and / or may omit some blocks as shown, and the scope of the present disclosure is not limited in this regard. For ease of understanding, the method 700 will be described from the perspective of the first device 110 with reference to FIG. 1.

[0108] At block 710, the first device 110 receives, from a second device 120, at least one slot comprising a first number of channel state information (CSI) -reference signals (RS) and a radio resource control (RRC) signaling indicating the first number of CSI-RS configurations associated with first number of CSI-RS. At block 720, the first device 110 generates, based on the first number of CSI-RS and a second number of CSI compression models deployed at the first device 110, a third number of sets of codewords, where the third number is not larger than the first number multiplied by the second number. At block 730, the first device 110 transmits, to the second device 120, the third number of sets of codewords and generation information for codewords indicating a CSI-RS among the first number of CSI-RS and a CSI compression model among the second number of CSI compression models based on which a set of the third number of sets of codewords is generated.

[0109] In some embodiments, the first device 110 may identify, based on comparison between characteristic of current CSI samples and characteristic of previous CSI samples, deviation in channel environment. The first device 110 may determine, based on the identified deviation, whether the channel environment satisfies a predefined update condition.

[0110] In some embodiments, a CSI compression model among the second number of CSI compression models may correspond to one of the second number of CSI decompression models deployed at the second device 120. A CSI feedback configuration may indicate a CSI compression model and a CSI decompression model corresponding to the CSI compression model. Furthermore, the second number of CSI compression models and the second number of CSI decompression models may have been pre-trained.

[0111] In some embodiments, a CSI compression model among the second number of CSI compression models having a compression ratio above a first threshold may correspond to a CSI decompression model among the second number of CSI decompression models having a compression ratio above a second threshold. Meanwhile, a CSI compression model among the second number of CSI compression models having a compression ratio below a third threshold may correspond to a CSI decompression model among the second number of CSI decompression models having a compression ratio below a fourth threshold.

[0112] In some embodiments, based on determining that the channel environment satisfying the predefined update condition, the first device 110 may transmit, to the second device 120, a request to update a current CSI-RS configuration and a current CSI feedback configuration in the channel environment.

[0113] In some embodiments, the first device 110 may receive, from the second device 120, arrangement information for CSI-RS indicating arrangement of the first number of CSI-RS in the at least one slot.

[0114] In some embodiments, the at least one slot may comprise the first number of slots. Furthermore, the first number of CSI-RS may be arranged into respective ones of the first number of slots.

[0115] In some embodiments, at least two of the first number of CSI-RS may be arranged at different symbols. Alternatively, at least two of the first number of CSI-RS may be arranged at different subcarriers. Alternatively, at least two of the first number of CSI-RS may be arranged at different ports.

[0116] In some embodiments, the first device 110 may obtain, based on the first number of CSI-RS, the first number of CSIs, and may feed the first number of CSIs into respective ones of the second number of CSI compression models to generate the third number of sets of codewords.

[0117] In some embodiments, the first device 110 may receive, from the second device 120, an indication of a selected CSI-RS configuration and a selected CSI feedback configuration by the second device 120. The first device 110 may transmit, to the second device 120, an indication of approval for the selected CSI-RS configuration and the selected CSI feedback configuration. The first device 110 may perform, based on the selected CSI-RS configuration and the selected CSI feedback model, CSI acquisition.

[0118] In some embodiments, the first device 110 may comprise a user equipment (UE) , or the second device 120 may comprise a base station (BS) .

[0119] FIG. 8 illustrates a flowchart of an example method 800 implemented at a second device in accordance with some other embodiments of the present disclosure. It is to be understood that the method 800 may include additional blocks not shown and / or may omit some blocks as shown, and the scope of the present disclosure is not limited in this regard. For ease of understanding, the method 800 will be described from the perspective of the first device 110 with reference to FIG. 1.

[0120] At block 810, the second device 120 receives, from a first device 110, (i) a third number of sets of codewords generated based on a first number of channel state information (CSI) -reference signals (RS) and a second number of CSI compression models deployed at the first device 110, and (ii) generation information for codewords indicating a CSI-RS among the first number of CSI-RS and a CSI compression model among the second number of CSI compression models based on which a set of the third number of sets of codewords is generated. The second device 120 generates the third number of reconstructed CSI based on the third number of sets of codewords, the generation information for codewords, and the second number of decompression models deployed at the second device 120. The second device 120 selects a CSI-RS configuration and a CSI feedback configuration based on the third number of reconstructed CSIs, a performance metric, and a predefined performance threshold.

[0121] In some embodiments, the second device 120 may receive, from the first device 110, a request to update a current CSI-RS configuration and a current CSI feedback configuration in channel environment.

[0122] In some embodiments, the second device 120 may generate at least one slot comprising the first number of CSI-RS a RRC signaling indicating the first number CSI-RS configurations associated with the first number of CSI-RS, and may transmit, to the first device 110, the at least one slot and the RRC signaling.

[0123] In some embodiments, based on determining receiving the request, the second device 120 may select the first number of CSI-RS configurations, and may arrange the first number of CSI-RS into the at least one slot.
