AI Technical Summary
Current relaxed measurement techniques in wireless communication networks are inadequate for low-power consumption devices with delay-tolerant traffic, as they lack effective criteria for reducing power consumption beyond traditional mobility and cell edge conditions.
A new relaxed measurement criterion is introduced, where a terminal device determines a time period associated with a target traffic type and performs at least one relaxed cell measurement within that time period, optimizing power consumption for low-power devices.
This approach significantly reduces power consumption in terminal devices by allowing relaxed cell measurements during designated time periods, thereby improving power efficiency and extending the operational life of low-power devices.

Abstract
Description
RELAXED CELL MEASUREMENTFIELD
[0001] Various example embodiments relate to the field of communications and in particular, to devices, methods, apparatuses, and computer readable storage media for a relaxed cell measurement.BACKGROUND
[0002] In communication technology, there is a constant evolution ongoing in order to provide efficient and reliable solutions for utilizing wireless communication networks. Each new generation has its own technical challenges for handling different situations and processes that are needed to connect and serve devices connected to wireless networks. To meet the demand for increased wireless data traffic since the deployment of 4th generation (4G) communication systems, efforts have been made to develop an improved 5th generation (5G) , pre-5G, or 5G-advanced communication system. The new communication systems can support various types of service applications for terminal devices.
[0003] In long term evolution (LTE) and new radio (NR) , an intra-frequency measurement and an inter-frequency measurement may consume substantial power of user equipment (UE) when the UE wakes up in a discontinuous reception (DRX) cycle or an enhanced DRX (eDRX) cycle. The DRX cycle and the eDRX cycle may be merged and called an (e) DRX cycle, or simply called a DRX cycle. Therefore, the third generation partnership project (3GPP) has introduced a relaxed measurement to reduce the power consumption when the UE is in an IDLE state and an INACTIVE state. However, there are still some open problems in the measurement relaxation that will be studied in the near future.SUMMARY

In the following description, the terms “terminal device” , “communication device” , “terminal” , “user equipment” and “UE” may be used interchangeably.
[0043] In recent years, IoT has attracted much attention in the wireless communication world. More ‘things’ are expected to be interconnected to improve productivity efficiency and increase the comforts of life. Further reduction of size, complexity, and power consumption of IoT devices enable the deployment of tens or even hundreds of billion IoT devices for various applications and provide added value across the entire value chain.
[0044] Energy harvesting enabled communication services, also called ambient IoT (A-IoT) in the 3GPP, have been widely used in various vertical industries including logistics, manufactures, transportation, energy industry, etc. Enabling energy harvesting devices (also referred to as A-IoT devices) in both public and private networks benefits the whole 5G ecosystem. Some areas of consideration for A-IoT studies include:
[0045] - operation under extreme environmental conditions e.g., high pressure, extremely high / low temperature, humid environment, etc., vibration.
[0046] - ultra-low complexity (cost) , very small terminal size / form factor (e.g., thickness of mm) , maintenance-free and longer life cycle, etc. are strongly required.
[0047] - other scenarios where a terminal driven by a battery is not applicable.
[0048] Therefore, support of A-IoT using either battery-less terminals or terminals with limited energy storage capability (for example, using a capacitor) may become a new requirement for the 3GPP technologies.
[0049] Following the progress in the 3GPP SA1, in the 3GPP RAN plenary , a new study item (SI) entitled “Study on A-IoT” was agreed. This study targets a new 3GPP IoT technology, suitable for deployment in a 3GPP system, which relies on ultra-low complexity devices with ultra-low power consumption for very-low end IoT applications. The scope of the study includes:
[0050] - Ambient energy enabled IoTs with energy harvesting capabilities.
[0051] - Low rate, low complexity is targeted.
[0052] - Both battery less and devices with limited energy storage capability are supported.
[0053] - Both active and passive transmission are supported.
[0054] The objective of the SI is as follows:
[0055] The A-IoT devices with energy harvesting capability harvest energy from natural sources like solar, vibrations, etc., and the amount of harvested and stored energy may vary over time. For example, weather, air quality, and whether there is shelter may affect the rate of harvesting energy. On one hand, it is hard to predict when and at what rate the energy may be harvested in the future. On the other hand, the A-IoT devices need to reduce the number of charges-discharges as much as possible to slow down the aging rate of components. Therefore, due to uncertainty in energy harvesting, the harvested energy should be used carefully and only used for necessary procedures such as synchronization, a necessary measurement, and necessary data reception / transmission.
[0056] Considering that NR UE mobility management is based on measurements from the serving cell as well as neighboring cells, which quickly depletes A-IoT devices’ energy, it may not be feasible to perform such measurements on a regular basis.
[0057] In addition, as discussed above, the 3GPP has introduced a relaxed measurement feature to reduce the power consumption when the UE is in an IDLE state or an INACTIVE state. Compared with IDLE state measurement in LTE, relaxed measurement criteria are added in NR. If at least one of the relaxed measurement criteria is met, the measurement period is extended to reduce power consumption. The relaxed measurement criterion includes the following:
[0058] - Relaxed measurement criterion for UE with low mobility
[0059] - Relaxed measurement criterion for UE not at cell edge
[0060] - Relaxed measurement criterion for a stationary RedCap UE
[0061] - Relaxed measurement criterion for a stationary RedCap UE not at cell edge
[0062] It can be seen that the current relaxed measurement is mainly for a stationary UE, a UE with low mobility, and a UE not at the cell edge. Other types of UEs, for example, A-IoT devices still need to perform regular measurements if they do not belong to these three cases.
[0063] As of now, there is no effective way to treat the A-IoT devices differently such that measurement relaxation to conserve energy may be applied based on a different criterion as compared to the legacy criteria, for example, the ones defined for NR and reduced capability (RedCap) devices. Given the limitation on energy harvesting of the A-IoT devices, optimizing mobility management functionality, for example, including UE measurement, cell selection / reselection, and mobility registration update operations is still an important issue to be solved.
[0064] According to embodiments of the present disclosure, there is provided a scheme for a relaxed cell measurement, more specifically, a new relaxed measurement criterion for a low-power consumption device with a delay-tolerant traffic. With this scheme, a terminal device determines a time period associated with a target traffic type. Moreover, the terminal device performs at least one relaxed cell measurement within the time period.
[0065] For example, the terminal device may comprise an A-IoT device, such as a mobile energy harvesting device (EHD) of A-IoT. By relaxing at least one cell measurement within the time period, it is allowed to reduce power consumption at the terminal device efficiently. In this way, it is possible to improve the power utilization for the terminal device, and thus improve power efficiency.
[0066] Hereinafter, principles and embodiments of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings. Reference is first made to FIG. 1, which illustrates an example environment 100 in which example embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented.
[0067] The environment 100, which may be a part of a communication network, comprises a terminal device 110 and a network device 120 communicating with each other. The communication between the terminal device 110 and the network device 120 may be direct or indirect. As an example, the terminal device 110 and the network device 120 may communicate with one or more further devices not shown in FIG. 1.
[0068] To transmit data and / or control information, the terminal device 110 may perform communications with the network device 120. A link from the network device 120 to the terminal device 110 is referred to as a downlink (DL) , while a link from the terminal device 110 to the network device 120 is referred to as an uplink (UL) .
[0069] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine a time period associated with a target traffic type, and then perform at least one relaxed cell measurement within the time period. Accordingly, the network device 120 may determine the time period associated with the target traffic type at the terminal device 110, and then determine that at least one relaxed cell measurement is performed by the terminal device 110 within the time period. As an example, the terminal device 110 may transmit, to the network device 120, information on the target traffic type. Then the network device 120 may indicate the terminal device 110 to perform the at least one relaxed cell measurement within the time period. In this case, the time period may be determined by the network device 120 and indicated to the terminal device 110. As another example, the terminal device 110 may determine to perform the at least one relaxed cell measurement within the time period and then indicate such terminal behavior to the network device 120. In this case, the time period may be determined by the terminal device 110 and indicated to the network device 120.
[0070] Although the terminal device 110 and the network device 120 are described in the communication environment 100 of FIG. 1, embodiments of the present disclosure may equally apply to any other suitable communication devices in communication with one another. That is, embodiments of the present disclosure are not limited to the exemplary scenarios of FIG. 1. In this regard, it is noted that although the terminal device is schematically depicted as a mobile phone and the network device 120 is schematically depicted as a base station in FIG. 1, it is understood that these depictions are exemplary in nature without suggesting any limitation. In other embodiments, the first device 110 and the network device 120 may be any other communication devices, for example, any other wireless communication devices.
[0071] It is to be understood that the particular number of various communication devices and the particular number of various communication links as shown in FIG. 1 is for illustration purpose only without suggesting any limitations. The communication environment 100 may include any suitable number of communication devices and corresponding communication links for implementing embodiments of the present disclosure. In addition, it should be appreciated that there may be various wireless as well as wireline communications (if needed) among all of the communication devices.
[0072] The communications in the environment 100 may follow any suitable communication standards or protocols, which are already in existence or to be developed in the future, such as Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) , long term evolution (LTE) , LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) , the fifth generation (5G) New Radio (NR) , Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) and Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) standards, and employs any suitable communication technologies, including, for example, Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) , Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) , time division multiplexing (TDM) , frequency division multiplexing (FDM) , code division multiplexing (CDM) , Bluetooth, ZigBee, and machine type communication (MTC) , enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) , massive machine type communication (mMTC) , ultra-reliable low latency communication (URLLC) , Carrier Aggregation (CA) , Dual Connectivity (DC) , and New Radio Unlicensed (NR-U) technologies.
[0073] FIG. 2 illustrates a signaling flow 200 between a terminal device and a network device according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the signaling flow 200 will be described with reference to FIG. 1.
[0074] As shown in FIG. 2, at 205, the terminal device 110 determines (205) a time period associated with a target traffic type. The time period may then be used to evaluate how long the terminal device 110 may relax one or more cell measurements. In some examples, the time period may also be referred to as a mandatory measurement period, which means the terminal device may perform one cell measurement if needed in the case that it relaxes all measurement in the time period.
[0075] As an example, the target traffic type may comprise delay tolerant traffic, for which a long delay tolerance period or cycle is allowed. The target traffic type may comprise any other types of traffic for which energy saving is needed. In the present disclosure, considering that a period and a length or duration of a cycle may refer to the same time frame, the terms “period” and “cycle” may be used interchangeably in some cases.
[0076] The above time period may be determined based on a maximum delay tolerance period associated with the delay tolerant traffic. For example, the time period may be configured as equal to the maximum delay tolerance period, which may ensure that the terminal device 110 at least camps in a certain cell and may be paged in that cell within the maximum delay tolerance period of the delay tolerant traffic. In some example embodiments, at the beginning of the time period (that is, the delay tolerance period) , the terminal device 110 may perform a cell measurement if needed and ensure that it is camped in a cell for paging radio network temporary identifier (P-RNTI) detection. Then, at other times during the time period, the cell measurement (s) may be relaxed and thus the cell measurement (s) may not be guaranteed.
[0077] As shown in FIG. 2, at 210, the terminal device 110 performs (210) at least one relaxed cell measurement within the time period. For example, if DL traffic is delay tolerant, the device 110 may perform relaxed measurement (s) within the maximum delay tolerance period of the DL traffic. Moreover, in addition to relaxing the cell measurement (s) , the terminal device may also not perform cell selection, cell reselection, or a mobility registration update during the time period. As an example, a counter or timer may be run to determine whether the time period has expired.
[0078] In some example embodiments, to relax the cell measurement (s) , the terminal device 110 may not perform at least one measurement (for example, whether it is mandatory or necessary measurements) within the time period. As an example, the terminal device 110 may not perform any cell measurement within the time period. The terminal device 110 may not perform any cell measurement and not monitor a paging message from the network device 120 within the time period, for example, if the terminal device moves out of the camping cell. As another example, the terminal device 110 may reduce the number of cell measurements within the time period, or in other words, perform a reduced number of cell measurements (i.e., fewer cell measurements) . For instance, the terminal device 110 may only perform up to one measurement in each delay tolerance cycle of the delay tolerant traffic, for example at the expiration of the time period.
[0079] In some example embodiments, after the end of a DRX cycle within the time period, the terminal device 110 may wake up to receive a synchronization signal block (SSB) and calculate a received signal level for synchronization (also called Srxlev) according to reference signal received power (RSRP) of the SSB. According to the above relaxation behavior at the terminal device 110, even though the terminal device 110 finds that the Srxlev is below a level threshold (for example, an Sintrasearch threshold associated with intra-frequency measurements and / or an Snonintrasearch threshold associated with non-intra-frequency measurements) , the terminal device 110 may perform the relaxed cell measurement (s) within the time period. Moreover, according to the above relaxation behavior at the terminal device 110, the terminal device 110 may perform the relaxed cell measurement (s) within the time period, even if the terminal device 110 departs from a cell in which the terminal device 110 camped. For example, in every DRX cycle, the terminal device 110 may not perform any necessary cell measurement (s) and cell reselection even if it moves out of the camping cell.
[0080] A DRX cycle consists of a duration in which the terminal device is not expected to perform a reception and hence may go into a sleep state as well as a duration in which the terminal device wakes up from its sleep state and monitors paging. When the terminal device wakes up from its sleep state, it may also perform other functions such as reception of the SSB and subsequent processing to perform measurements. An eDRX cycle allows for an extended sleep state and may comprise more than one occasion, separated by the DRX cycle length, during which the terminal device monitors paging within the cycle. In the present disclosure, the terms “DRX cycle” and “eDRX cycle” may be used interchangeably. In other words, the term “DRX cycle” may refer to a DRX cycle or an eDRX cycle. In various embodiments below, the end of the sleep time of a DRX cycle, i.e., when the UE wakes up from its sleep state (e.g., to monitor paging) , may be referred to as the end of a DRX cycle.
[0081] In some example embodiments, after the end of a DRX cycle within the time period, if the terminal device is still in the camping cell, and the received signal level for synchronization is above the above level threshold, the terminal device 110 may detect a paging message on the paging occasion from the network device 120. If the P-RNTI is received, the terminal device 110 may receive DL data from the network device 120. Then, the terminal device 110 may go to sleep and wait for the end of another DRX cycle.
[0082] In some example embodiments, after the end of a DRX cycle that is not within the time period, if the terminal device 110 determines that the received signal level for synchronization is below the level threshold, and / or the terminal device 110 departs from a cell in which the terminal device 110 camped, the terminal device 110 may perform one or more cell measurements. Moreover, the terminal device 110 may then perform cell selection, cell reselection, and / or a mobility registration update based on one or more measurement results of the one or more cell measurements.
[0083] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 110 may restart the time period if it performs a cell measurement. Alternatively or additionally, the terminal device 110 may restart the time period if it is at the end of a radio resource control (RRC) connected (RRC-connected) mode of the terminal device 110.
[0084] Accordingly, as shown in FIG. 2, the network device 120 determines (215) the time period associated with the target traffic type at the terminal device 110. Then, the network device 120 determines (220) that at least one relaxed cell measurement is performed by the terminal device 110 within the time period.
[0085] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 110 may be indicated to relax one or more cell measurements within the time period. The terminal device 110 may transmit, to the network device 120, information on the target traffic type, for example, delay tolerance information of the delay tolerant traffic. The network device 120 may then configure the terminal device 110 for the relaxed measurement operation. The network device 120 may instruct the terminal device 110 to perform at least one relaxed cell measurement within the time period. As an example, the network device 120 may transmit (225) , to the terminal device 110, a relaxation indication indicating the terminal device 110 to perform the at least one relaxed cell measurement within the time period, for example, in a radio resource control (RRC) message. In this case, the network device 120 may determine the time period based on the information received from the terminal device, and then indicate the time period to the terminal device 110. As an example, the network device 120 may transmit, to the terminal device, an indication of the time period together with a DRX (or eDRX) configuration of the terminal device 110. The time period may be expressed or indicated in a variety of forms. For example, the time period may comprise the maximum delay tolerance period of the delay tolerant traffic. In other words, the time period may be configured, expressed, or indicated directly as the maximum delay tolerance period. As another example, the time period may comprise a multiple of a DRX cycle, equivalent to the maximum delay tolerance period. In other words, the time period may be expressed or indicated as the multiple of the DRX cycle. In these example embodiments, it is good for network-controlled operation.
[0086] In some other example embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine to perform the at least one relaxed cell measurement within the time period by itself and then indicate the terminal behavior to the network device 120. The terminal device 110 may transmit (230) , to a network device 120, information indicating that the terminal device 110 performs the at least one relaxed cell measurement within the time period. For example, the terminal device 110 may transmit, to the network device 120, delay tolerance information in the registration stage to let the network device 120 be aware of the terminal behavior of relaxed measurement (s) due to delay tolerant traffic. Therefore, the network device 120 may know that one or more parameters are configured or used for the terminal device 110 in the RRC IDLE / INACTIVE state, where one is a DRX cycle and another is the time period for relaxing the cell measurement (s) . As an example, the terminal device 110 may determine the time period based on the target traffic type, and then transmit, to the network device 120, information on the time period. As an example, for the terminal device 110 configured with relaxed measurement (s) , a delay tolerance parameter of the delay tolerant traffic may be transmitted to the network device 120. The parameter may comprise the value of the maximum delay tolerance period (ms) or a multiple of a DRX cycle (number) equivalent to the maximum delay tolerance period.
[0087] In some example embodiments, at the end of a DRX cycle of the terminal device 110, the network device 120 may transmit, to the terminal device 110, a paging message in the case of DL traffic arriving. Based on the determination of the relaxation behavior at the terminal device 110, if a response for the paging message is not received from the terminal device 110, the network device 120 may determine that a reason for which the response is not received from the terminal device 110 may be that the at least one relaxed cell measurement is performed at the terminal device 110 within the time period. For example, the network device may know that the terminal device performs no cell measurement and does not monitor the paging message from the network device 120 within the time period, and thus no response for the paging message may be received at the network device 120. Thus, if the first paging message fails, the network device 120 may not worry about device unreachability or DL link interruption. The network device 120 may then transmit, to the terminal device 110, the paging message in a follow-up DRX cycle in the time period. If the response is not received within the time period, the network device 120 may resend the paging message after the end of the time period, i.e., after the moment that the terminal device will do the mandatory cell measurement if needed. As an example, when the terminal device 110 moves out of the camping cell, the response may only be received after the terminal device 110 does the mandatory cell measurement and camps in a new cell after the time period. Then, the network device 120 may transmit, to the terminal device 110, a data packet, for example, through a small data transmission (SDT) , after receiving the response for the paging message from the terminal device 110.
[0088] It is to be understood that in the above example embodiments, the terminal device 110 may be assumed to have small energy storage and be capable of independent signal generation with an active radio frequency (RF) component for transmission. The above example embodiments may also apply to any other types of terminal devices for power saving purposes.
[0089] In this way, relaxing cell measurement (s) enables very low power consumption at the terminal device efficiently. Moreover, it is possible to improve the power utilization for the terminal device and thus improve power efficiency.
[0090] FIG. 3A illustrates example relaxed measurements in DRX cycles for the terminal device moving out of the camping cell according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 3A, the time period for relaxing cell measurements is configured as the same as the maximum delay tolerance period of the application. At the beginning of the first DRX cycle 301, the terminal device 110 performs a mandatory cell measurement if needed. During the first DRX cycle 301, the terminal device 110 moves out of the camping cell. After the end of the first DRX cycle 301which is within the time period, the terminal device 110 performs a relaxed cell measurement (e.g., it does not perform any measurement) , and thus the terminal device fails to perform cell reselection. Thus, the terminal device 110 fails to respond to a paging message from the network device 120. Likewise, after the end of the second DRX cycle 303 which is still within the time period, the terminal device 110 also performs a relaxed cell measurement and also fails to respond to a paging message from the network device 120. After the end of the third DRX cycle 305 which is not within the time period, the terminal device 110 is allowed to perform a mandatory cell measurement if needed (for example, for the reason that it is out of the camping cell) . In this case, the terminal device 110 performs a cell measurement and performs cell reselection. Then, the terminal device 110 responds to a paging message from the network device 120 and receives DL data from the network device 120.
[0091] FIG. 3B illustrates example relaxed measurements in DRX cycles for the terminal device in the camping cell according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 3B, the time period for relaxing cell measurements is configured as the same as the maximum delay tolerance period of the application. At the beginning of the first DRX cycle 311, the terminal device 110 performs a mandatory cell measurement if needed. During the first DRX cycle 301, the terminal device 110 is still in the camping cell. After the end of the first DRX cycle 301which is within the time period, the terminal device 110 does not need to perform a cell measurement. Even though, since it is still in the camping cell, the terminal device 110 responds to a paging message from the network device 120 and then receives DL data from the network device 120. After the end of the second DRX cycle 313 which is within the time period for relaxing cell measurements, the terminal device 110 does not need to perform a cell measurement. After the end of the third DRX cycle 315 which is not within the time period for relaxing cell measurements, the terminal device 110 may perform a mandatory cell measurement if needed.
[0092] As can be seen from the FIGS. 3A and 3B, if the DRX cycle is set to be as same as the delay tolerance period (that is, the time period for relaxing cell measurement (s) ) of the delay tolerant traffic, this will result in the terminal device 110 experiencing the lowest satisfaction, i.e., it is the worst experience where the terminal device 110 may be paged only at delay tolerance cycle intervals. It is beneficial to configure the time period for relaxing cell measurement (s) separately from the DRX cycle. For example, a short DRX cycle may be configured together with a long time period for relaxing cell measurement (s) . In this way, it is allowed to ensure that the terminal device 110 can immediately respond to the paging message from the network device 120, especially for the terminal device 110 with low mobility or in the cell center, and ensure that the terminal device 110 can be paged at least within the delay tolerance cycle for the terminal device 110 with high mobility or relaxed cell measurement (s) . This is a configurable trade-off between service quality and energy consumption.
[0093] FIG. 4 illustrates a flow chart of an example operation of the terminal device according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the flow chart 400 will be described from the perspective of the terminal device 110 with reference to FIG. 1.
[0094] As shown in FIG. 4, at 401, the terminal device 110 sets a value of the local parameter DRXcounter to 0 and sets the energy threshold as a default value or a specific value configured by the network device 120. The energy threshold may be used to decide whether the terminal device 110 may enter the next operation at each DRX cycle or skip all operations and directly enter a sleep mode due to insufficient harvested energy.
[0095] Then, at 403, the device wakes up after the end of the DRX cycle. At 405, the terminal device 110 compares the stored energy with the energy threshold. If the stored energy is less than or equal to the energy threshold, the flow chart 400 goes to the operation 407, where the terminal device 110 goes to sleep without doing anything (with relaxed cell measurement (s) ) because the harvested energy cannot support the subsequent operations during awakening. If the stored energy is more than the energy threshold, at 409, the terminal device 110 determines whether the accumulated value of the DRXcounter reaches the delay tolerance period.
[0096] If the accumulated value of the DRXcounter reaches the delay tolerance period, at 411, the terminal device performs a mandatory measurement and cell (re) selection if needed. Then, the terminal device 110 detects the P-RNTI at 413 to check whether there is a paging message for it, and resets the DRXconter at 415. At 417, the terminal device 110 may receive DL data if there is DL data arriving. Then, at 419, the terminal device 110 goes to sleep, and then the flow chart 400 goes back to the operation 403.
[0097] If the accumulated value of the DRXcounter does not reach the delay tolerance period, at 421, the terminal device determines whether it still camps in the camping cell. If the terminal device has moved out of the camping cell, the flow chart 400 goes to the operation 407. If the terminal device 110 is still in the camping cell, at 423, the terminal device 110 determines whether the Srxlev is higher than all thresholds (for example, the Sintrasearch threshold and the Snonintrasearch threshold) . If the Srxlev is not higher than all thresholds, the flow chart 400 goes to the operation 407. If the Srxlev is higher than all thresholds, at 425, the terminal device 110 detects the P-RNTI. Then the flow chart 400 goes to the operations 417 and 419 as described above.
[0098] Operations and features as described above with reference to FIGS. 2 to 3B are likewise applicable to the flow chart 400 and have similar effects. For the purpose of simplification, the details will be omitted.
[0099] FIG. 5 illustrates an example communication process between the terminal device and the network device according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 500 will be described with reference to FIG. 1. Accordingly, the UE 501 may be an example of the terminal device 110, and the gNB 503 may be an example of the network device 120. The process 500 further evolves the application 505.
[0100] As shown in FIG. 5, at 506, during the registration, DRX configuration parameters are configured in the gNB 503 and the UE 501. Together with the DRX information parameters, some new parameters are configured. For example, a mandatory measurement cycle (or mandatory measurement period) may be configured by the UE 501 and indicated to the gNB 503. Alternatively or additionally, the mandatory measurement cycle may be configured by the gNB 503 and indicated to the UE 501. Moreover, an energy threshold is configured by the gNB 503 and indicated to the UE 501. In the initialization phase, the UE 501 resets a local parameter DRXcounter to 0. The DRXcounter may be used to determine whether it reaches the mandatory measurement cycle.
[0101] At 508, the application 505 transmits DL data to the gNB 503. At 510, after the end of a DRX cycle, the UE 501 wakes up, receives an SSB, and synchronizes to the gNB 503. The UE 501 checks the stored energy with respect to the energy threshold, and increments the DRXcounter. If the received Srxlev is less than Sintrasearch and Snonintrasearch thresholds, or UE 501 has departed from the camped cell, the UE 501 may check the DRXcounter again.
[0102] At 512, the gNB 503 transmits a paging message to the UE 501. At 514, if the DRXcounter does not reach the mandatory measurement cycle and the UE 501 finds that it has left the camped cell, then UE 501 performs a relaxed measurement. That is, the UE 501 goes to sleep directly without doing anything, for example, cell reselection or even mobility registration update. For example, this may be based on the network enabling a power-saving feature in the UE 501 through a higher-layer configuration (e.g., RRC) or based on UE 501’s implementation. In this case, even if there is DL data in the gNB 503 to be transmitted, the UE 501 may not attempt to detect the P-RNTI on the paging occasion, and the paging message may not reach the UE 501.
[0103] At 516, after the end of another DRX cycle, the UE 501 wakes up, receives an SSB, and synchronizes to the gNB 503. The UE 501 checks the stored energy with respect to the energy threshold and checks the DRXcounter. If the UE 501 finds that the DRXcounter reaches the mandatory measurement cycle, at 518, the UE 501 may perform a cell measurement if needed (for example, if the received Srxlev is less than Sintrasearch and Snonintrasearch thresholds) and even cell reselection to camp on another cell. The UE 501 may establish an RRC connection, for example, if it needs to perform cell reselection or even mobility registration update.
[0104] At 520, the gNB 503 transmits a paging message to the UE 501. At 522, the UE attempts to detect the P-RNTI on the paging occasion. At 524, the gNB 503 transmits the DL data to the UE 501 if there is DL data to be transmitted. The gNB 503 may transmit the DL data by SDT without establishing the RRC connection. At 526, after DL data transmission, the UE 501 goes to sleep and waits for the next DRX cycle.
[0105] Operations and features as described above with reference to FIGS. 2 to 4 are likewise applicable to the process 500 and have similar effects. For the purpose of simplification, the details will be omitted.
[0106] FIG. 6 illustrates a flowchart 600 of a method implemented at a terminal device according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 600 will be described from the perspective of the terminal device 110 with reference to FIG. 1.
