Abstract

Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to pathloss estimation, spatial relation information estimation, or both. In an aspect, a terminal device obtains configuration information for performing, outside a paging time window, a measurement of at least one of pathloss reference signal or spatial relation information reference signal (RS) associated with a sounding reference signal. The terminal device performs, based on the configuration information and outside the paging time window, the measurement using (i) at least one of a first RS configured for measuring the path-loss or a second RS configured for measuring the spatial relation information, or (ii) a synchronization signal block used for an additional radio resource management from at least one serving cell or at least one neighboring cell of the terminal device. As such, a solution for positioning outside a paging time window is provided, thereby providing an enhanced low-power high-precision positioning.

[0042] The term “terminal device” refers to any end device that may be capable of wireless communication. By way of example rather than limitation, a terminal device may also be referred to as a communication device, user equipment (UE) , a Subscriber Station (SS) , a Portable Subscriber Station, a Mobile Station (MS) , or an Access Terminal (AT) . The terminal device may include, but not limited to, a mobile phone, a cellular phone, a smart phone, voice over IP (VoIP) phones, wireless local loop phones, a tablet, a wearable terminal device, a personal digital assistant (PDA) , portable computers, desktop computer, image capture terminal devices such as digital cameras, gaming terminal devices, music storage and playback appliances, vehicle-mounted wireless terminal devices, wireless endpoints, mobile stations, laptop-embedded equipment (LEE) , laptop-mounted equipment (LME) , USB dongles, smart devices, wireless customer-premises equipment (CPE) , an Internet of Things (loT) device, a watch or other wearable, a head-mounted display (HMD) , a vehicle, a drone, a medical device and applications (e.g., remote surgery) , an industrial device and applications (e.g., a robot and / or other wireless devices operating in an industrial and / or an automated processing chain contexts) , a consumer electronics device, a device operating on commercial and / or industrial wireless networks, and the like. In the following description, the terms “terminal device” , “communication device” , “terminal” , “user equipment” and “UE” may be used interchangeably.

[0043] Some enhancements for enabling LPHAP may be implemented in various solutions. For example, an extended discontinuous reception (eDRX) cycle may be extended beyond 10.24s towards meeting a battery life requirement for LPHAP. As for uplink (UL) or downlink (DL) and UL positioning for UEs, sounding reference signal (SRS)  configuration enhancements can be specified based on an SRS positioning validity area to avoid frequent RRC connection for SRS (re) configuration. Positioning reference signal (PRS) measurements may be performed for a UE in RRC_IDLE state, and be reported in RRC_CONNECTED state. Radio resource management (RRM) measurements may be included in the enhancements for LPHAP.

[0044] For the case that a UE is configured to perform PRS measurements or to perform SRS transmission for positioning, when the eDRX cycle is smaller or equal to the configured PRS measurement reporting periodicity (if the PRS measurements are configured) and configured SRS transmission periodicity (if SRS transmission for positioning is configured) , RRM measurements for positioning are performed within a paging time window (PTW) . The RRM measurements for positioning include at least a RRM measurement for cell reselection.

[0045] In some cases, the RRM measurements for positioning may be not limited to the PTW when the eDRX cycle is longer than the configured PRS measurement reporting or SRS transmission periodicity. Thus, it may not be precluded that downlink positioning reference signal (DL PRS) measurements or SRS transmission occasions are configured while not being limited to the PTW. It can be occurred when the UE is required to perform a positioning operation during a sleeping period of the eDRX cycle, especially when an enhanced eDRX cycle is much longer than the configured SRS transmission periodicity.

[0046] If the UE needs to perform a positioning measurement outside the PTW (i.e., right after waking up from a sleep mode) , the UE may lose its time synchronization. This can be a new issue for both SRS transmission and DL PRS measurements. In this case, an additional RRM measurement for positioning is needed. Since such additional RRM measurement is not limited to the PTW, the RRM measurement for positioning (mainly for a synchronization purpose) can be performed before PRS measurements or SRS transmission.

[0047] Based on the current specifications, the UE measurement outside paging time window is just up to UE implementation, and generally, the UE does not need to perform a measurement of a path-loss RS outside paging time window. In case of the LPHAP UE, the sleeping time is now extremely long such as 1 hour (an eDRX value can be up to 10485.76 sec, i.e., about 3 hours) . The periodicity of SRS transmission and paging time  window cannot be aligned as the maximum SRS periodicity is only 20.48 seconds. Thus, the SRS transmission occasion can be outside the PTW (i.e., the UE needs to transmit the positioning SRS in a sleeping time duration) . In other words, the UE may sleep for a long time such as a couple of minutes, and the UE needs to wake up and transmit the SRS, and then switches to the sleep mode again.

[0048] In addition, when the UE transmits the SRS, the already obtained path-loss and spatial relation information might not be valid, as the UE might not have monitored the path-loss RS and / or QCL source during the sleeping mode. For example, as shown in FIG. 1B, the UE may try to perform PRS measurement or SRS transmission even if it is outside the paging time window.

[0049] Based on the current behavior, if the UE does not accurately estimate the spatial relation information RS of a positioning SRS resource, the UE is not allowed to transmit the positioning SRS. Some embodiments of the present disclosure focus on how to effectively support SRS transmission outside the paging time window for LPHAP. For the SRS transmission, the UE at least needs to decide at least one of a proper beam direction and a transmission power.

[0050] According to some embodiments of the present disclosure, there is provided a solution to enhance positioning of a UE, particularly, to enhance low-power high-precision positioning. In this solution, a terminal device can obtain configuration information for performing, outside a paging time window, a measurement of at least one of pathloss reference signal (RS) or spatial relation information RS associated with a sounding reference signal (SRS) . The terminal device can perform, based on the configuration information and outside the paging time window, the measurement using one of the following: (i) at least one of a first RS configured for measuring the path-loss or a second RS configured for measuring the spatial relation information, or (ii) a synchronization signal block (SSB) used for an additional radio resource management (RRM) from at least one serving cell or at least one neighboring cell of the terminal device. As such, a solution for positioning outside a paging time window is provided, thereby providing an enhanced low-power high-precision positioning. Principles and embodiments of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings.

[0051] FIG. 1A illustrates a schematic diagram of an example communication network 100 in which some embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. As shown  in FIG. 1A, the communication network 100 may include a terminal device 110 and network devices 120 (for example, a network device120-1 or a network device 120-2) . In some embodiments, the network device 120 may provide a serving cell, and the terminal device 110 may be located in the cell and may be served by the network device 120. It is to be understood that the number of devices or cells in FIG. 1A is given for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitations to the present disclosure. The communication network 100 may include any suitable number of network devices and / or terminal devices and / cells adapted for implementing implementations of the present disclosure.

[0052] As shown in FIG. 1A, the terminal device 110 may communicate with the network device 120 via a channel such as a wireless communication channel. The communications in the communication network 100 may conform to any suitable standards including, but not limited to, Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) , Long Term Evolution (LTE) , LTE-Evolution, LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) , New Radio (NR) , Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) , Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , GSM EDGE Radio Access Network (GERAN) , Machine Type Communication (MTC) and the like. The embodiments of the present disclosure may be performed according to any generation communication protocols either currently known or to be developed in the future. Examples of the communication protocols include, but not limited to, the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , 2.5G, 2.75G, the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , 4.5G, the fifth generation (5G) communication protocols, 5.5G, 5G-Advanced networks, or the sixth generation (6G) networks.

[0053] Communication in a direction from the terminal device 110 towards the network device 120 is referred to as UL communication, while communication in a reverse direction from the network device 120 towards the terminal device 110 is referred to as DL communication.

[0054] More details of some embodiments of the present disclosure will be described with reference to FIG. 2. FIG. 2 shows a signaling chart illustrating a process for positioning outside a paging time window according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. Only for the purpose of discussion, the process 200 will be described with reference to FIG. 1A. The process 200 may involve the terminal device 110 and the network device 120 in FIG. 1A. It is to be appreciated that any graphic elements, numerical values, and descriptive text in these figures are only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting  any limitations.

[0055] In the process 200, the terminal device 110 receives (202) , from the network device 120, configuration information for performing, outside a paging time window, a measurement of at least one of pathloss reference signal (RS) or spatial relation information RS associated with a sounding reference signal (SRS) . The terminal device 110 perform (204) , based on the configuration information and outside the paging time window, the measurement using at least one of a first RS configured for measuring the path-loss or a second RS configured for measuring the spatial relation information. Alternatively, the terminal device 110 perform (204) , based on the configuration information and outside the paging time window, the measurement using a synchronization signal block (SSB) used for an additional radio resource management (RRM) from at least one serving cell or at least one neighboring cell of the terminal device.

[0056] In some embodiments, the configuration information includes a triggering condition to perform the measurement of at least one of pathloss or spatial relation information associated with the SRS outside of the paging time window. Additionally, the triggering condition includes the additional RRM measurement at the terminal device being initiated.

[0057] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may further determine whether at least one of the first or second RSs is monitored by the terminal device as valid. As an example, the terminal device 110 may further determine, based on determining that at least one of the first or second RSs is monitored by the terminal device as valid, at least one of the pathloss or spatial relation information for SRS transmission outside the paging time window based on the measurement performed using at least one of the first or second RSs. As another example, the terminal device 110 may further perform, based on determining that at least one of the first or second RSs is monitored by the terminal device as invalid, the measurement using the SSB. Next, the terminal device 110 may determine at least one of the pathloss and spatial relation information for SRS transmission outside the paging time window based on the measurement performed using the SSB.

[0058] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may further determine at least one of the pathloss or spatial relation information for SRS transmission outside the paging time window based on the measurement performed using the SSB regardless of the valid of the first or second RSs.

[0059] In some embodiments, the network device 120 may transmit, to the terminal device 110 and based on the configuration information, a request for selecting an SSB from a cell for transmitting the first or second RS as the SSB. At the other side of communication, the terminal device may perform the selection of the SSB based on the request. Alternatively, the terminal device may perform the selection of the SSB based on the configuration information.

[0060] In some embodiments, the network device 120 may transmit, to the terminal device 110 and based on the configuration information, a request for determining whether a time advance (TA) is valid outside the paging time window so as to perform the additional RRM measurement and determine at least one of the pathloss or spatial relation information. At the other side of communication, the terminal device 110 may further determine whether the TA is valid before initiating the additional RRM measurement outside the paging time window. The measurement may be performed based on determining that the TA is not valid outside the paging time window. Further, the SRS is transmitted with a power and a beam determined based on the determined pathloss and spatial relation information.

[0061] In some embodiments, the terminal device 110 may further receive, from the network device 120, a request for transmitting the SRS outside the paging time window. As an example, the terminal device 110 may trigger the measurement based on the request. In addition, the terminal device 110 may further receive, from the network device 120, positioning assistance data via a system information block. The terminal device 110 may further transmit, to the network device 120, a response for indicating a low power high accuracy positioning capability of the terminal device. The positioning assistance data and indication of HPHAP capability may be used for implementing the positioning outside the PTW.

[0062] With the process as described above, new UE behaviors for path-loss estimation and spatial relation information estimation outside a paging window especially for LPHAP devices with a large eDRX cycle are proposed. The basic idea is triggering a UE to estimate pathloss and spatial relation information for SRS transmission when an additional RRM measurement is triggered / initiated outside a paging time window. If the UE is still not able to accurately measure the pathloss and spatial relation information RS of the SRS resource, the UE may be able to use SSB (s) used for the additional RRM measurements (outside the paging time window) as both path-loss RS and spatial relation information RS. Such operation can effectively update the path-loss RS and spatial relation RS before SRS  transmission outside the paging time window.

[0063] The new UE behaviors include the triggering of path-loss RS and / or spatial relation RS estimation outside the paging time window. There can be two considered options. In option 1, when the device performs additional RRM measurements, it also triggers the device to perform additional pathloss and / or spatial relation estimation. In option 2, when the TA becomes not valid, it also triggers the device to perform the additional pathloss and / or spatial estimation.

[0064] The pathloss RS or spatial relation RS may change. If the UE performs additional RRM measurements from SSB (s) outside the paging time window before positioning SRS transmission and already failed to accurately measure a configured path-loss RS and / or spatial relation RS, the UE should use the SSB (s) used for additional RRM measurement as a path-loss RS and / or spatial relation RS for the SRS transmission. In this way, the pathloss and spatial relation information for SRS transmission can be efficiently updated in case that the additional RRM measurements is triggered / initiated outside the paging time window.

[0065] Now some embodiments of the present disclosure herein will be further described in detail with reference to FIGS. 3-5 below for the purpose of clearer understanding. The additional details on UE behaviors for pathloss and spatial relation estimation outside a PTW are illustrated in FIGS. 3 and 4. FIG. 3 shows a flowchart illustrating a process for positioning outside a paging time window according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. FIG. 4 shows a flowchart illustrating another process for positioning outside a paging time window according to some embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0066] In processes 300 and 400, the UE may be configured with positioning SRS configuration and eDRX. The gNB may provide the UE with SRS configuration including a path-loss RS and / or a spatial relation information RS for the configured SRS. The gNB may provide the UE with a new UE behavior related to estimation of the path-loss RS and / or spatial relation information RS or update them. The gNB may configure the UE to update the measurement of the path-loss RS and / or spatial relation information RS when an additional RRM measurement is triggered. The gNB may configure which option the UE should take between option 1 (as shown in FIG. 3) and option 2 (as shown in FIG. 4) .

[0067] The UE may be expected to perform a RSRP measurement on the configured  path-loss RS for a positioning SRS resource set and the configured spatial relation information RS for a positioning SRS resource if a RRM measurement outside a paging window is triggered. RRC signaling impact can be expected to provide configuration from the gNB to the UE. Also, higher layer signaling impact can be expected to provide configuration.

[0068] At block 302, the UE may decide to transmit the positioning SRS outside the paging time window. More specifically, the UE can decide the SRS transmission based on an indication from the network For example, LMF may request the UE to transmit the SRS at least per tens of (e.g., 30) seconds according to a specific use case and requirement. The currently considered requirement of LPHAP is 30 seconds. Alternatively, the UE may decide the SRS transmission on its own. For example, the UE can decide the SRS transmission outside the paging time window in case the UE is aware of the requirement. In addition, the UE may be configured to report a UE Rx-Tx time difference measurement, and the UE may transmit at least one positioning SRS. It is to be noted that the UE reporting occasion should be in on-duration but it is possible for the UE to have no chance to transmit the SRS in on-duration right before the measurement reporting.

[0069] At block 304, the UE may perform a TA validation check or a spatial relation validation check to determine whether the synchronization is proper. If the synchronization is not proper (for example, if the TA is not valid from the TA validation check, as shown at block 306) , the UE may decide to perform the additional RRM measurement outside the PTW at block 308. In this case, the UE may perform the additional RRM measurements only for positioning. Herein the additional RRM measurements can be considered as RRM measurements outside the paging time window. Typically, during the time duration in a sleep mode, the UE is not required to perform RRM measurement for SSB (s) from both a serving cell and one or more neighboring cells to save UE power. The UE behavior on the additional RRM measurement is to perform a RRM measurement even in the time duration of the sleep mode. However, it does not mean the UE should perform measurements for all configured SSBs. The UE may measure a part of periodically transmitted SSBs when it needs for the positioning functionality.

[0070] In option 1, the UE may also perform RSRP measurements on path-loss or spatial relation RS of the SRS transmission (SRS resource set) at block 310. If a DL PRS resource is configured as the path-loss RS or the spatial relation information RS, the UE  may measure RSRP of a DL PRS transmitted over the DL PRS resource. At block 312, the UE may determine whether the UE is able to accurately measure the spatial relation information RS or pathloss RS, for example, using a side condition defined in RAN4. As an example, the RSRP measurement should be at least greater than a certain dB such as -5 dB, so as to decide it is able to accurately measure the configured RS. If the UE is still not able to accurately measure the spatial relation information RS or pathloss RS of the SRS resource, the UE may use the SSB (s) used for the additional RRM measurement as a path-loss RS / spatial relation RS for the SRS transmission. In particular, at block 314, the UE may trigger the additional RRM measurement for SSB (s) from the serving cell (s) and / or neighbors cell (s) . At block 316, the UE may use the SSB used for additional RRM measurement as a pathloss RS or spatial relation RS for the SRS transmission.

[0071] Also, in option 2, the UE may trigger the additional RRM measurement for SSB (s) from serving cell (s) and / or neighbor cell (s) , and the additional RRM measurement is used for the estimation of the spatial relation RS and the pathloss reference RS. In other words, the SSB (s) used for the additional RRM measurement can be used to replace the configured spatial relation information RS and / or the path-loss RS of the SRS transmission. In an example, the additional RRM measurement triggering needs to be done by the UE based on some criteria without any indication. A specific signaling can be required to configure the triggering conditions. For example, the UE may need to transmit SRS even in the sleep mode (e.g., 1 hour) . Then the UE may evaluate if the synchronization is okay. For example, the UE may perform the TA validity check. Based on the evaluation, the UE can decide whether to perform additional RRM measurements before the SRS transmission. The difference between the options 2 and 1 is that in the option 2, there is no need to perform the operations in blocks 310 and 312.

[0072] According to the presence of the configuration of at least one of pathloss RS or spatial relation information RS, the following two cases can be considered. In Case 1, when the UE is not configured with at least one of spatial relation information RS or path-loss RS for an SRS resource, the UE may select serving-cell SSB (s) , used for the additional RRM measurement, as at least one of a spatial relation information RS or a path-loss RS. In Case 2, when the UE is configured with the at least one of spatial relation information RS or path-loss RS, the additional RRM measurement includes a SSB transmitted from a specific cell associated with the at least one of spatial relation information RS or path-loss RS.

[0073] At block 318, the UE may determine a transmission power based on the estimation of path-loss RS and a transmission beam based on the estimation of spatial relation RS. At block 320, The UE may transmit the positioning SRS based on the determined transmission power and transmission beam. According, the gNB may perform the positioning measurement based on the positioning SRS, and report positioning measurements to the LMF.

[0074] During the process as described above, the pathloss or spatial relation estimation for LPHAP is proposed in case that the addition RRM measurement is triggered outside the paging time window. It is to be understood that if the SSBs used for additional RRM measurements are exactly the same as the configured path-loss RS or spatial relation information RS, the option 2 could be a part of the option 1. However, generally, the option 2 is not a part of the option 1 as the SSB used for the additional RRM may not be the same as the configured spatial relation RS and path-loss RS. In addition, the DL PRS configured as at least one of path-loss RS or spatial relation RS cannot be used for the additional RRM as they are not SSBs.

[0075] FIG. 5 shows a signaling chart illustrating a process for positioning outside a paging time window according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 5, in process 500, the LMF 120-2 may broadcast (502) positioning assistance data via system information block. At the UE side, the UE 110 may receive (502) the positioning assistance data. The UE 110 may provide (504) LPHAP UE capability to the gNB 120-1 and the LMF 120-2. At the gNB side, the gNB 120-1 may provide (506) SRS configuration including pathloss RS and / or spatial relation information. The gNB 120-1 may configure (508) the UE 110 to update the pathloss RS measurement and / or spatial relation information RS measurements if the additional RRM is triggered. Further, the gNB 120-1 may configure (510) a specific option the UE has to take (between options 1 and 2) . At the UE side, the UE 110 may decide (512) whether to update measurement of pathloss and spatial relation information outside the PTW. Then, the UE 110 can transmit (514) the SRS.

[0076] FIG. 6 shows a flowchart of an example method 600 implemented at a terminal device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 600 will be described from the perspective of the terminal device 110 with reference to FIG. 1A.
