In the example of FIG. 2A, the apparatus 100 is in an open configuration.

[0077] In the illustrated example, at least one of the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 are moved / rotated towards the other to place the apparatus 100 in the closed configuration and are moved / rotated away from the other to place the apparatus in an open configuration.

[0078] In the example of FIG. 2A, the apparatus 100 comprises a display 106 that is located and supported across the first and second moveable portions 102, 104. Accordingly, the apparatus 100 of FIG. 2A comprises a foldable display 106 that is folded in the closed configuration and at least partially opened in an open configuration.

[0079] In the example of FIG. 2A, the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 are located against each other in the closed configuration.

[0080] The example of FIG. 2B shows another example of an apparatus 100 and is similar to the example of FIG. 2A. However, in the example of FIG. 2B the apparatus 100 comprises a central portion 208 between the first and second moveable portions 102, In examples, the central portion 208 can be one of the first and second moveable portions 102, 104.

[0081] In the example of FIG. 2B, the apparatus 100 comprises a display 106 that is located and supported across the first moveable portion 102, the central portion 208, and the second moveable portion 104. Accordingly, the apparatus 100 of FIG. 2B comprises a foldable display 106 that is folded in the closed configuration and at least partially opened in an open configuration.

[0082] In the example of FIG. 2B the apparatus 100 is in an open configuration.

[0083] In the example of FIG. 2B, the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 are located against the central portion 208 in the closed configuration.

[0084] FIG. 2C shows another example of an apparatus 100. In the example of FIG. 2C, the apparatus 100 is a rollable device, and for example a mobile telephone.

[0085] In the example of FIG. 2C, the apparatus 100 comprises first and second moveable portions 102, 104 that are configured to move to roll the apparatus 100, and put the apparatus 100 in the closed configuration, and to unroll the apparatus to open the apparatus 100 and put the apparatus 100 in at least one open configuration. In the example of FIG. 2A, the apparatus 100 is in an open configuration.

[0086] In the illustrated example, at least one of the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 is moved towards the other to place the apparatus 100 in the closed configuration and moved away from the other to place the apparatus in an open configuration.

[0087] In the example of FIG. 2C, the apparatus 100 comprises a display 106 that can be located and supported in the first and second moveable portions 102, 104, and then at least partially revealed as at least one of the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 is moved away from the other. Accordingly, the apparatus 100 of FIG. 20 comprises a rollable display 106 that is, in some examples, rolled in the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 in the closed configuration and at least partially extended between the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 in an open configuration.

[0088] In some examples, a portion of the rollable display 106 is available in the closed configuration and more of the rollable display 106 is available in an open configuration.

[0089] In the example of FIG. 2C, the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 are located against each other in the closed configuration.

[0090] Returning to the example of FIG. 1, in examples a closed configuration is a configuration that the apparatus 100 is configured to be placed in to be stored and / or kept while the apparatus 100 is not in use by a user of the apparatus 100. For example, a closed configuration can be a configuration that the apparatus 100 is configured to be placed in when the apparatus 100 is in a pocket or a bag of a user.

[0091] For example, a closed configuration can be a configuration in which an area of the at least one display 106 that is available for use is substantially minimized, and / or in which the at least one display is protected from damage.

[0092] For example, with reference to FIG. 2A, the apparatus 100 is in the closed configuration when the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 are located against each other, meaning that the display 106 is not available / accessible and the display 106 is protected.

[0093] For example, with reference to FIG 2B, the apparatus 100 is in the closed configuration when the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 are located against the central portion 208, meaning that the display 106 is not available / accessible and the display is protected.

[0094] For example, with reference to FIG. 2C, the apparatus 100 is in the closed configuration when the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 are located against each other, meaning that the amount of the display 106 that is rolled and located within the first or second moveable portions 102, 104 is substantially maximized.

[0095] In examples, an open configuration is a configuration that the apparatus 100 is configured to be placed in to be used by a user of the apparatus 100.

[0096] For example, an open configuration can be a configuration in which at least a part of the display 106 is made available for use by a user compared to the closed configuration.

[0097] For example, an open configuration can be a configuration in which a user can use and / or interact with at least part of the at least one display 106.

[0098] In some examples, an open configuration can be a configuration of the apparatus 100 that is not the closed configuration.

[0099] With reference to the examples of FIGs 2A and 2B, the apparatus 100 are in open configurations because a user can see and interact with at least part of the display 106.

[0100] With reference to the example of FIG 2C, the apparatus 100 is in an open configuration because the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 are separated and at least a part of the display 106 is unrolled compared to the closed configuration.

[0101] In examples, the apparatus 100 can be in an open configuration without the apparatus 100 being completely unfolded or unrolled. That is, in examples, an apparatus 100 does not necessarily have to be completely unfolded or unrolled to be in an open configuration.

[0102] For example, the apparatus 100 in the examples of FIGs 2A to 2C are in open configurations, but can be opened / unrolled further. Referring again to the example of FIG. 1 , the at least one display 106 has a display area, wherein a larger display area is available in the at least one open configuration compared to the closed configuration.

[0103] In examples, a display area is available if a user can use and / or access the display area.

[0104] Accordingly, in examples, a user can access and / or use a larger area of the at least one display 106 when the apparatus 100 is in an open configuration compared to the closed configuration.

[0105] Making available a display area can comprise exposing, and / or revealing, and / or uncovering, and / or showing a display area and so on.

[0106] For example, the first and second movable portions 102, 104 can be moved away from each other to unfold or unroll the apparatus 100 to make available a larger display area. See, for example, FIG. 2A, 2B, and / or 2C.

[0107] In examples, the apparatus 100 comprises a single display 106 that extends across at least a part of the first moveable portion 102 and at least a part of the second moveable portion 104. This is indicated by the dashed box in the example of FIG. 1.

[0108] Accordingly, in examples, the first moveable portion 102 comprises a first part of the display area and the second moveable portion comprises a second part of the display area.

[0109] By way of example, reference is made to the example of FIG. 2A.

[0110] As described above, in the example of FIG. 2A, the apparatus 100 comprises a display 106 that extends across the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 and has a display area 200 that extends across the first and second moveable portions 102, 104. In the example of FIG. 2A, the first moveable portion 102 therefore comprises a first part 200A of the display area 200 and the second moveable portion comprises a second part 200 B of the display area 200. See also the example of FIG. 2B.

[0111] A display area 200 can be an area of the display that can be used to display information, such as images, text and so on.

[0112] As described above, the apparatus 100 in the example of FIG. 1 comprises means 108 for determining which of the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 moved during movement between the closed configuration and an open configuration. In some examples, movement between the closed configuration and an open configuration is a result of movement of at least one of the first and second moveable portions 102, 104.

[0113] Accordingly, in examples the means 108 are configured to determine which of the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 moved to move / change the apparatus 100 between the closed configuration and an open configuration.

[0114] In some examples, a user can move at least one of the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 to move the apparatus 100 between the closed configuration and an open configuration. For example, in the example, of FIG. 2A, a user can rotate the first moveable portion 102 towards / away from the second moveable portion 104, and / or can rotate the second moveable portion 104 towards / away from the first moveable portion 102, and / or can rotate the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 towards / away from each other to move the apparatus between the closed configuration and an open configuration.

[0115] In examples, the apparatus 100 is opened from the closed configuration to an open configuration and the means 108 are therefore configured to determine which of the first and second moveable portion 102, 104 moved during movement from the closed configuration to an open configuration.

[0116] In examples, the apparatus 100 is closed from an open configuration to the closed configuration and the means 108 are therefore configured to determine which of the first and second moveable portion 102, 104 moved during movement from an open configuration to the closed configuration.

[0117] In some examples, the means 108 are configured to determine a rate of movement of the first and / or second moveable portions 102, 104 during movement between the closed configuration and an open configuration. For example, the means 108 can be configured to determine how quickly the first and / or second moveable portions 102, 104 were moved during movement between the closed configuration and an open configuration.

[0118] The means 108 can comprise any suitable means for determining which of the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 moved during movement between the closed configuration and an open configuration.

[0119] In examples, the means 108 comprises a controller, such as a controller 830 as described in relation to FIGs 8A and 8B.

[0120] In some examples, the means 108 comprises at least one processor and at least one memory including computer program code, the at least one memory storing instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, control the apparatus 100.

[0121] For example, the means 108 can comprise at least one processor and at least one memory including computer program code, the at least one memory storing instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor cause the apparatus to perform at least one or more actions as described herein.

[0122] In some examples, the means 108 for determining which of the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 moved comprises at least one motion sensor 110.

[0123] Any suitable motion sensor or sensors 110 can be used. For example, any suitable motion sensor(s) 110 configured to determine which of the first and second movable portions 102, 104 moved during movement between a closed configuration and an open configuration can be used. In some examples, a single motion sensor 110 is used.

[0124] In examples, the at least one motion sensor 110 comprises at least one inertial measurement unit (IMU), and / or at least one camera, and / or at least one pressure sensor, and / or at least one rotation sensor and so on.

[0125] For example, at least one image from at least one camera in the apparatus 100 can be analyzed to determine which of the first and / or second moveable portions 102, 104 moved.

[0126] Additionally, or alternatively, information from one or more external cameras can be used. For example, the means 108 can be configured to receive information from at least one camera external to the apparatus 100, and process the received information to determine which of the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 moved. In some examples, the apparatus 100 comprises at least one receiver (not illustrated) configured to receive signals from and external camera system, and pass information to the means 108, such as a controller 830.

[0127] For example, information from at least pressure sensor can be used to determine how a user is holding the apparatus 100 during movement between the closed configuration and an open configuration, and a determination made as to which of the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 moved based, at least in part, on the pressure sensor information.

[0128] For example, if it is determined, based at least in part on pressure sensor information, that a user is gripping both sides of one moveable portion and only one side of the other moveable portion, it can be determined that the moveable portion being gripped on both sides is being held still and the other moveable portion is being moved.

[0129] For example, information from at least one rotation sensor in a hinge of the apparatus 100 can be used in determining which of the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 moved. For example, information from at least one IMU can be used in determining which of the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 moved.

[0130] In some examples, the first moveable portion 102 comprises at least one motion sensor 110 and the second moveable portion 104 comprises at least one motion sensor 110. This is illustrated in the example of FIG. 1 by the dashed boxes in the first moveable portion 102 and the second moveable portion 104.

[0131] In some examples, determining which of the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 moved during movement between the closed configuration and an open configuration comprises determining which of the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 moved to determine a sequence of movements for each of the first and second moveable portions 102, 104.

[0132] Accordingly, in examples, moving the apparatus 100 between the closed configuration and an open configuration can comprise a sequence of movements involving at least one of the first and second moveable portions 102, 104, and determining which of the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 moved during movement between the closed configuration and an open configuration comprises determining the sequence of movements.

[0133] By way of example, reference is made to the examples of FIGs 5 and 6.

[0134] FIG. 5 illustrates an example of a sequence of movements 502 of first and second moveable portions 102, 104 of an apparatus 100.

[0135] In the example of FIG. 5, the apparatus 100 is similar or the same as the apparatus 100 of the example of FIG. 2.

[0136] FIG. 5 has six parts labelled A to F, showing an example of a sequence of movements 502 to move the apparatus 100 from a closed configuration to an open configuration. In part A of FIG. 5 the apparatus 100 is in the closed configuration. In this configuration, the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 are located against each other. Consequently, no display area 200 is available.

[0137] In part B of FIG. 5, the first moveable portion 102 is moved through an angle of approximately 30 degrees and the second moveable portion 104 is not moved.

[0138] In part C of FIG. 5, the first moveable portion 102 is moved back and the apparatus 100 is returned to the closed configuration.

[0139] In part D of FIG. 5, the second moveable portion 104 is moved through an angle of approximately 90 degrees and the first moveable portion 102 is not moved.

[0140] In part E of FIG. 5, the second moveable portion 104 is moved back and the apparatus 100 is returned to the closed configuration.

[0141] In part F of FIG. 5, the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 are both moved through an angle of approximately 90 degrees and the apparatus 100 is left in an open configuration.

[0142] It can be seen that the display area 200 available in part F of FIG. 5 is greater than the display area 200 available in part A of Fig. 5.

[0143] In examples, movements of the first and / or second moveable portion 102, 104 can be recognized as part of a sequence of movements 502 if a movement occurs within a predetermined time period of a previous movement.

[0144] Additionally, or alternatively, prior to making a sequence of movements 502 a user can make at least one input into the apparatus 100 to inform the apparatus 100 that a sequence of movements 502 is to be made. For example, a user can make a voice and / or haptic input to inform the apparatus 100 that a sequence of movements 502 is to be made. The example of FIG. 6 is similar to the example of FIG. 5, however in the example of FIG. 6 an apparatus 100 similar to or the same as the apparatus 100 of FIG. 20 is shown.

[0145] In part A of FIG. 6 the apparatus 100 is in a closed configuration and the first moveable portion 102 is moved to the left by 50% of the full extent. The result is shown in part B.

[0146] In part B of FIG. 6, the first moveable portion 102 is moved back and the apparatus 100 is returned to the closed configuration. The result is shown in part C.

[0147] In part C of FIG. 6, the second moveable portion 104 is moved to the right to the full extent to move the apparatus 100 to an open configuration. The final open configuration is not shown in the example of FIG. 6.

[0148] Returning to the example of FIG. 1, as described above, the apparatus 100 comprises means 108 for performing at least one action based, at least in part, on determining which of the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 moved.

[0149] The means 108 can comprise any suitable means for performing at least one action based, at least in part, on determining which of the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 moved.

[0150] In examples, the means 108 comprises a controller, such as a controller 830 as described in relation to FIGs 8A and 8B.

[0151] In some examples, the means 108 comprises at least one processor and at least one memory including computer program code, the at least one memory storing instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor, control the apparatus 100.

[0152] For example, the means 108 can comprise at least one processor and at least one memory including computer program code, the at least one memory storing instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor cause the apparatus to perform at least one or more actions as described herein.

[0153] The at least one action can comprise any suitable action that can be performed by the apparatus 100. For example, the at least one action can comprise any suitable action using and / or involving the at least one display 106, and / or at least one input of the apparatus 100, and / or at least one output of the apparatus 100 and so on.

[0154] Accordingly, in examples, the means 108 for performing at least one action can comprise the at least one display 106, and / or at least one input of the apparatus 100, and / or at least one output of the apparatus 100 and so on.

[0155] In general, the means 108 can comprise any component of the apparatus 100 that can be controlled by at least one controller.

[0156] In some examples, the apparatus 100 has multiple operating modes, such as ‘work’, ‘personal’ and so on, and the at least one action can comprise placing the apparatus 100 and / or configuring the apparatus 100 in an operation mode.

[0157] In examples, an operation mode can configure the apparatus 100 for use in a particular context. For example, a work operation mode can provide a view that provides easy access to work-related applications and content. Similarly, a personal operation mode can provide a view that provides easy access to personal applications and content.

[0158] For example, performing at least one action can comprise locking and / or silencing the apparatus 100.

[0159] In examples, locking comprises putting the apparatus 100 in a locked state, preventing access to functionality of the apparatus 100. In examples, a predetermined input, such as a passcode and / or biometric identification, is needed to unlock the apparatus 100 and take the apparatus 100 out of the locked state. In examples, silencing the apparatus 100 comprises turning off audible alerts of the apparatus 100, for example audible call alerts, audible message alerts and so on.

[0160] In some examples, performing at least one action comprises activating at least one application or other function of the apparatus 100. For example, performing at least one action can comprise activating a camera of the apparatus, and / or opening a music player, and / or opening calendar application and so on.

[0161] Consequently, in examples, performing at least one action may comprise at least one of: placing the apparatus 100 in an operation mode, and activating at least one application.

[0162] By way of example, reference is made to the example of FIGs 3 and 4.

[0163] The example of FIG. 3 shows opening of an apparatus 100 in the form of a foldable device according to examples of the disclosure, and performance of at least one action 300.

[0164] The example of FIG. 3 has three parts, A, B, and C, showing different examples.

[0165] In part A of FIG. 3, the foldable device is in a closed configuration and the first moveable portion 102, which is the front cover in the illustrated example, is moved to move the foldable device to an open configuration.

[0166] This movement causes the foldable device to open in work mode, and therefore in this example performing at least one action 300 comprises opening in work mode.

[0167] Part B of FIG. 3 is similar to part A of FIG. 3, however in part B of FIG. 3 both the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 are moved to move the foldable device to an open configuration.

[0168] This movement causes the foldable device to open in generic mode, and therefore in this example performing at least one action 300 comprises opening in generic mode. Part C of FIG. 3 is similar to parts A and B of FIG. 3, however in part C of FIG. 3 the second moveable portion 104, which is the back cover in the illustrated example, is moved to move the foldable device to an open configuration.

[0169] This movement causes the foldable device to open in personal mode, and therefore in this example performing at least one action 300 comprises opening in personal mode.

[0170] The example of FIG. 4 is similar to the example of FIG. 3, however the example of FIG. 4 shows an apparatus 100 in the form of a rollable device 210.

[0171] In part A of FIG. 4, the first moveable portion 102 is moved to move the rollable device 210 to an open configuration.

[0172] This movement causes the rollable device 210 to open the camera, and therefore in this example performing at least one action 300 comprises opening the camera.

[0173] In part B of FIG. 4, both the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 are moved to move the rollable device 210 to an open configuration.

[0174] This movement causes the rollable device 210 to open the status screen, and therefore in this example performing at least one action 300 comprises opening the status screen.

[0175] In part C of FIG. 4, the second moveable portion 104 is moved to move the rollable device 210 to an open configuration.

[0176] This movement causes the rollable device 210 to open note-taking and therefore in this example performing at least one action 300 comprises opening note-taking.

[0177] In examples, a sequence of movements 502 can cause at least one action 300 to be performed. For example, the sequence of movements 502 in the example of FIG. 5 can be used to open contacts. For example, the sequence of movements 502 in the example of FIG. 6 can be used to place the device in dark mode and so on. In some examples, the means 108 are configured to determine at least one additional action performed during movement between the closed configuration and an open configuration, and perform at least one action 300 based, at least in part, on the determined at least one additional action.

[0178] Any suitable additional action(s) can be used. For example, shaking the apparatus 100, speech input(s), changing grip force and so on.

[0179] In examples, a user can perform at least one additional action during moving the apparatus 100 between the closed configuration and an open configuration. For example, a user could shake the apparatus 100 of FIG. 2A while moving the first and second moveable portions 102, 104.

[0180] By way of example, reference is made to the example of FIG. 5. In examples, at least one additional action 506 is performed at part D of FIG. 5. In the illustrated example, the user makes a speech input at part C, for example speaking a pass phrase, and the at least one action 300 that is performed at part F is determined based, at least in part, on the speech input.

[0181] Examples of the disclosure are advantageous and / or provide technical benefits.

[0182] For example, examples of the disclosure provide for efficient control of an apparatus, such as an electronic device.

[0183] For example, examples of the disclosure provide for a user to navigate directly to a mode, application, or function of an apparatus without going through meu structures.

[0184] For example, examples of the disclosure combine an opening action and a shortcut action resulting in efficient use of an apparatus.

[0185] For example, examples of the disclosure provide for an apparatus to be opened into an operating mode that preserves privacy of information that the apparatus would otherwise display. For example, if a user’s home screen normally displays a calendar widget and the user is opening the apparatus to show someone that the user does not want to share future availability with, the user can open the apparatus in a way that causes the widget not to be displayed. This can be done without the other person’s knowledge.

[0186] For example, examples of the disclosure enable a user to discretely open an apparatus in duress mode, for example if a user is being forced to open an apparatus. This can, for example, protect private information and / or present dummy information when the apparatus is opened in duress mode.

[0187] For example, examples of the disclosure provide for shortcut mechanisms that are natural for apparatus comprising moveable portions, such as foldable and rollable devices.

[0188] Examples of the disclosure address the following problem:

[0189] When a user opens their smartphone and starts to use it, how the user can quickly and efficiently get access to the applications and content that are relevant to the task or activity that the user opened their smartphone for?

[0190] For example, the user might use their smartphone for work and for personal purposes. When the user opens their phone to do some work-related tasks, it would be practical if the phone provided a view that is optimized for work use with easy access to work-related applications and content. Such a view could be called the “work mode”.

[0191] Similarly, when the user opens their phone to do some personal tasks, it would be practical if the phone provided a different view that highlights user’s personal applications and content. Such a view could be called the “personal mode”.

[0192] Examples of the disclosure address the problem of how the user could easily and effectively select and open their smartphone in the right mode when starting to use their phone. As another example, the user might want to immediately access a specific application when opening their smartphone. For example, if the user opens their phone to take a photo, they might want to open the phone immediately in the camera application. Or if the user opens their phone to write down some notes, they might want to open the phone immediately in the notetaking application.

[0193] Examples of the disclosure address the problem of how the user could easily and effectively select and open their smartphone in a specific application when starting to use their phone.

[0194] Examples of the disclosure provide advantages in the context of foldable and rollable smartphones and other devices.

[0195] Foldable and rollable smartphones and other devices can be opened in several different ways. Opening the device in a certain way could be used as a shortcut to access a certain operating mode or application. For example, opening the device in one way could open it in the “work mode”, while opening the device in another way could open it in the “personal mode”. As another example, opening the device in one way could start the camera application, in another way the note-taking application, and in a third way the main application menu.

[0196] Foldable devices (see, for example, FIGs 2A and 2B and / or FIG. 3) comprise two parts, front and back, connected by a hinge. It is possible to detect the way how the device is opened, for example, by integrating motion sensors in the front and back parts. By analyzing and comparing the motion data captured by the front part sensors and the back part sensors, it is possible to classify different ways that can be used to open the device and determine which of the ways is used.

[0197] Different ways to open the device can then be associated with different modes of use or with different applications. For example, opening the front cover could open the device in the “work mode”, opening the back cover could open the device in the “personal mode”, and opening both covers could open the device in the “generic mode”. Rollable devices (see, for example, FIG. 20, FIG. 4, and / or FIG. 6) comprise two parts with a display between them. The device is opened by pulling the parts in opposite directions which reveals a larger area of the display. Using an approach similar to the one used in foldable devices, it is possible to integrate motion sensors in the two parts and analyze the captured motion data to determine how the device was opened.

[0198] Different ways to open the device can then be associated with different modes of use or with different applications. For example, opening the device to the left could open the device to the camera application, opening the device to the right could open the device to the note-taking application, and opening the device to both directions could open the device to the status screen.

[0199] Other factors, such as speed and rhythm of opening, extent to which the device is opened (e.g., half or fully open), user’s hand grip, twisting, stretching, etc. could also be considered in the classification of different ways how the device can be opened. This would increase the number of ways how the device can be opened and the number of available shortcut options. For example, if opening the device to the left opens the device to the camera application, then opening the device quickly to the left could open the camera application in photo mode, while opening the device slowly to the left could open the camera application in video mode.

[0200] More complex sequences of actions to open the device could be used to expand the range of available shortcut options even further. See, for example, FIG. 6, opening the device first to the left 50%, then closing the device, and opening the device to the right 100% could open the device to a specific mode, for example, to the user’s TODO list in the notetaking application.

[0201] The opening sequence could combine device open and close actions with other actions, such as shaking the device, giving voice commands, or changing the grip force.

[0202] A complex opening sequence that is difficult to guess could also be used as an access control mechanism similar to, for example, PIN codes. FIG. 7 illustrates an example of a method 700.

[0203] Method 700 can be performed by any suitable apparatus comprising any suitable means for performing method 700. For example, an apparatus as described in relation to FIG. 1 and / or FIGs 8A and / or 8B.

[0204] At block 702, method 700 comprises determining which of first and second moveable portions 102, 104 of an apparatus 100 moved during movement between a closed configuration and an open configuration, wherein the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 are moveable relative to each other to move the apparatus 100 between a closed configuration and at least one open configuration, wherein movement between the closed configuration and an open configuration is a result of movement of at least one of the first and second moveable portions 102, 104, and wherein the apparatus 100 comprises at least one display 106 having a display area 200, wherein a larger display area 200 is available in the at least one open configuration compared to the closed configuration.

[0205] At block 704, method 700 comprises performing at least one action 504 based, at least in part, on determining which of the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 moved.

[0206] Consequently, FIG. 7 illustrates a method 700 comprising: determining which of first and second moveable portions 102, 104 of an apparatus 100 moved during movement between a closed configuration and an open configuration, wherein the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 are moveable relative to each other to move the apparatus 100 between a closed configuration and at least one open configuration, wherein movement between the closed configuration and an open configuration is a result of movement of at least one of the first and second moveable portions 102, 104, and wherein the apparatus 100 comprises at least one display 106 having a display area 200, wherein a larger display area 200 is available in the at least one open configuration compared to the closed configuration; and performing at least one action 504 based, at least in part, on determining which of the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 moved.

[0207] Fig 8A illustrates an example of a controller 830 suitable for use in an apparatus, such as apparatus 100 of FIG. 1. In examples, controller 830 can be an apparatus 100.

[0208] Implementation of a controller 830 may be as controller circuitry. The controller 830 may be implemented in hardware alone, have certain aspects in software including firmware alone or can be a combination of hardware and software (including firmware).

[0209] As illustrated in Fig 8A the controller 830 may be implemented using instructions that enable hardware functionality, for example, by using executable instructions of a computer program 836 in a general-purpose or special-purpose processor 832 that may be stored on a computer readable storage medium (disk, memory etc.) to be executed by such a processor 832.

[0211] The memory 834 stores a computer program 836 comprising computer program instructions (computer program code) that controls the operation of the apparatus when loaded into the processor 832. The computer program instructions, of the computer program 836, provide the logic and routines that enables the apparatus to perform the methods illustrated in the accompanying Figs. The processor 832 by reading the memory 834 is able to load and execute the computer program 836.

[0212] The apparatus comprises: at least one processor 832; and at least one memory 834 including computer program code the at least one memory 834 and the computer program code configured to, with the at least one processor 832, cause the apparatus at least to perform: determining which of first and second moveable portions 102, 104 of an apparatus 100 moved during movement between a closed configuration and an open configuration, wherein the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 are moveable relative to each other to move the apparatus 100 between a closed configuration and at least one open configuration, wherein movement between the closed configuration and an open configuration is a result of movement of at least one of the first and second moveable portions 102, 104, and wherein the apparatus 100 comprises at least one display 106 having a display area 200, wherein a larger display area 200 is available in the at least one open configuration compared to the closed configuration; and performing at least one action 504 based, at least in part, on determining which of the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 moved.

[0213] The apparatus comprises: at least one processor 832; and at least one memory 834 including computer program code, the at least one memory storing instructions that, when executed by the at least one processor 832, cause the apparatus at least to: determining which of first and second moveable portions 102, 104 of an apparatus 100 moved during movement between a closed configuration and an open configuration, wherein the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 are moveable relative to each other to move the apparatus 100 between a closed configuration and at least one open configuration, wherein movement between the closed configuration and an open configuration is a result of movement of at least one of the first and second moveable portions 102, 104, and wherein the apparatus 100 comprises at least one display 106 having a display area 200, wherein a larger display area 200 is available in the at least one open configuration compared to the closed configuration; and performing at least one action 504 based, at least in part, on determining which of the first and second moveable portions 102, 104 moved. As illustrated in Fig 8A, the computer program 836 may arrive at the apparatus via any suitable delivery mechanism 862. The delivery mechanism 862 may be, for example, a machine readable medium, a computer-readable medium, a non- transitory computer-readable storage medium, a computer program product, a memory device, a record medium such as a Compact Disc Read-Only Memory (CD- ROM) or a Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) or a solid-state memory, an article of manufacture that comprises or tangibly embodies the computer program 836. The delivery mechanism may be a signal configured to reliably transfer the computer program 836. The apparatus may propagate or transmit the computer program 836 as a computer data signal.

[0215] The computer program instructions may be comprised in a computer program, a non- transitory computer readable medium, a computer program product, a machine readable medium. In some but not necessarily all examples, the computer program instructions may be distributed over more than one computer program.

[0216] Although the memory 834 is illustrated as a single component / circuitry it may be implemented as one or more separate components / circuitry some or all of which may be integrated / removable and / or may provide permanent / semi-permanent / dynamic / cached storage.

[0217] In examples the memory 834 comprises a random-access memory 858 and a read only memory 860. In examples the computer program 836 can be stored in the read only memory 858. See, for example, Fig. 8B.

[0218] Although the processor 832 is illustrated as a single component / circuitry it may be implemented as one or more separate components / circuitry some or all of which may be integrated / removable. The processor 832 may be a single core or multi-core processor.

[0231] The term ‘comprise’ is used in this document with an inclusive not an exclusive meaning. That is any reference to X comprising Y indicates that X may comprise only one Y or may comprise more than one Y. If it is intended to use ‘comprise’ with an exclusive meaning then it will be made clear in the context by referring to “comprising only one...” or by using “consisting”.

[0232] In this description, the wording ‘connect’, ‘couple’ and ‘communication’ and their derivatives mean operationally connected / coupled / in communication. It should be appreciated that any number or combination of intervening components can exist (including no intervening components), i.e. , so as to provide direct or indirect connection / coupling / communication. Any such intervening components can include hardware and / or software components.

[0233] As used herein, the term "determine / determining" (and grammatical variants thereof) can include, not least: calculating, computing, processing, deriving, measuring, investigating, identifying, looking up (for example, looking up in a table, a database or another data structure), ascertaining and the like. Also, "determining" can include receiving (for example, receiving information), accessing (for example, accessing data in a memory), obtaining and the like. Also, " determine / determining" can include resolving, selecting, choosing, establishing, and the like.

[0234] In this description, reference has been made to various examples. The description of features or functions in relation to an example indicates that those features or functions are present in that example. The use of the term ‘example’ or ‘for example’ or ‘can’ or ‘may’ in the text denotes, whether explicitly stated or not, that such features or functions are present in at least the described example, whether described as an example or not, and that they can be, but are not necessarily, present in some of or all other examples. Thus ‘example’, ‘for example’, ‘can’ or ‘may’ refers to a particular instance in a class of examples. A property of the instance can be a property of only that instance or a property of the class or a property of a sub-class of the class that includes some but not all of the instances in the class. It is therefore implicitly disclosed that a feature described with reference to one example but not with reference to another example, can where possible be used in that other example as part of a working combination but does not necessarily have to be used in that other example.

[0235] Although examples have been described in the preceding paragraphs with reference to various examples, it should be appreciated that modifications to the examples given can be made without departing from the scope of the claims.

[0236] Features described in the preceding description may be used in combinations other than the combinations explicitly described above.

[0237] Although functions have been described with reference to certain features, those functions may be performable by other features whether described or not.

[0238] Although features have been described with reference to certain examples, those features may also be present in other examples whether described or not.

[0239] The term ‘a’, ‘an’ or ‘the’ is used in this document with an inclusive not an exclusive meaning. That is any reference to X comprising a / an / the Y indicates that X may comprise only one Y or may comprise more than one Y unless the context clearly indicates the contrary. If it is intended to use ‘a’, ‘an’ or ‘the’ with an exclusive meaning then it will be made clear in the context. In some circumstances the use of ‘at least one’ or ‘one or more’ may be used to emphasis an inclusive meaning but the absence of these terms should not be taken to infer any exclusive meaning.

[0240] The presence of a feature (or combination of features) in a claim is a reference to that feature or (combination of features) itself and also to features that achieve substantially the same technical effect (equivalent features). The equivalent features include, for example, features that are variants and achieve substantially the same result in substantially the same way. The equivalent features include, for example, features that perform substantially the same function, in substantially the same way to achieve substantially the same result.

[0241] In this description, reference has been made to various examples using adjectives or adjectival phrases to describe characteristics of the examples. Such a description of a characteristic in relation to an example indicates that the characteristic is present in some examples exactly as described and is present in other examples substantially as described.

[0242] The above description describes some examples of the present disclosure however those of ordinary skill in the art will be aware of possible alternative structures and method features which offer equivalent functionality to the specific examples of such structures and features described herein above and which for the sake of brevity and clarity have been omitted from the above description. Nonetheless, the above description should be read as implicitly including reference to such alternative structures and method features which provide equivalent functionality unless such alternative structures or method features are explicitly excluded in the above description of the examples of the present disclosure.

[0243] Whilst endeavoring in the foregoing specification to draw attention to those features believed to be of importance it should be understood that the Applicant may seek protection via the claims in respect of any patentable feature or combination of features hereinbefore referred to and / or shown in the drawings whether or not emphasis has been placed thereon. l / we claim:
