Description

A RELEASABLE FASTENERTechnical Field

[0001] The present disclosure generally relates to releasable fasteners. More particularly, it relates to a releasable fastener for a one-sided bolt system for use in industrial applications such as mining. Background

[0002] This application is related to the following applications: (1) Singapore Patent Application No. 10202302769Q “A LOCKING SEAL FOR A BLIND-SIDED BOLT SYSTEM,” filed 28 September 2023; and (2) PCT International Application No. PCT / SG2024 / 050153 “A FASTENER FOR A ONE-SIDED BOLT SYSTEM,” filed 14 March 2024; All of these applications are incorporated by reference herein.

[0003] The following discussion of the background to the invention is intended to facilitate an understanding of the present invention However, it should be appreciated that the discussion is not an acknowledgment or admission that any of the material referred to was published, known or part of the common general knowledge in any jurisdiction as at the priority date of the application.

[0004] In the mining industry, as well as in general industrial applications, one-sided bolt systems allow for the attachment of components, for example, replaceable wear liners, from one side of a structure, which is often a critical requirement in confined or hard-to- reach areas. The common use of these systems highlights their utility and the demand for efficient one-sided fastening solutions.

[0005] Releasable fasteners play a pivotal role in various industrial applications, ensuring the secure attachment of components while allowing for convenient disassembly andreassembly. In the realm of bolt systems, particularly those designed for one-sided applications, the optimization of fastening assemblies hold significant importance.

[0006] Traditional one-sided bolt systems used in mining applications conventionally feature a nut positioned on the inner side of the chute wall. However, this configuration poses notable challenges, particularly concerning wear liners. These liners often suffer from the creation of large holes due to the placement of the nut, consequently becoming susceptible to localized wear over time. Additionally, there remains a need for a releasable fastener capable of accommodating even thinner plates and narrower holes Existing innovations have made strides in reducing wear and improving compatibility with thinner plates, yet they have not fully addressed the constraints posed by exceedingly thin materials or narrow fastener holes.

[0007] The primary objective of the present invention is to overcome the limitations of existing one-sided bolt systems by providing a releasable fastener specifically tailored to address the challenges associated with thin plates, narrow holes and preventing localized wear over time.Summary of the Invention

[0086] Figures la and lb show an exploded sectional view and an exploded view respectively of a releasable fastener assembly for securing a wear liner to a structure according to various embodiments. Figures 2a and 2b show a top view and a side view respectively of the releasable fastener assembly for securing a wear liner to a structure according to various embodiments. With reference to the aforesaid figures, a releasable fastener assembly 200 for securing a wear liner or an object to a structure 10 is shown.Throughout the specification, the structure 10 may include any piece of machinery or equipment where a surface of the structure is exposed to wear. For example, the structure 10 can be a transfer chute where only the inside surface is accessible by an operator. The structure 10 has a first surface 14 that is typically concealed and not readily accessible during wear liner replacement. The first surface 14 is either not accessible or can only be accessed by setting up a scaffolding or using an access equipment. The structure 10 also has a second surface 12 against which the wear liner or wear plate 60 is mounted on. The wear liner 60 includes a liner opening 66 therethrough to facilitate mounting the wear liner 60 the structure 10. The structure 10 has at least a mounting opening 16 that is aligned with the liner opening 66 to receive the releasable fastener assembly for securing the wear liner 60 to the structure 10. According to various embodiments, the releasable fastener assembly 200 is specifically designed to secure the wear liner 60 to the structure 10. The releasable fastener 200 allows the wear liner 60 to be easily installed and removed as and when desired.

[0087] Figures 3a-c show a top view, a side sectional view and a perspective view respectively of a front portion of a releasable fastener assembly according to various embodiments. The releasable fastener 200 comprises a front portion 210, a locking component 220 and an end portion 230. In an embodiment, the front portion 210 is an elongate nut that has a length L that is longer than its width W. The elongate nut has an upper surface and a bottom surface. The front portion 210 has a threaded aperture 212 extending therethrough along its central axis XX for receiving the end portion 230. The front portion 210 includes a radially curved surface at each corner of the front portion 210. While all four corners of the elongate are radially curved, the radially curved surface at three corners is more pronounced and is of a greater radius than the curved surface at the remaining corner. By having the radially curved surfaces at three corners that is of a greater radius than the remaining corner, this keeps the front portion in a relatively fixed position in the pre-installation and installation position. It also serves to prevent the front portion from rotating in the opposed direction (anti-clockwise direction) when in the preinstallation position and installation position. The more pronounced radially curved surfaces at the three corners also allow the front portion to rotate smoothly into the finalposition from an initial position (at installation position) and vice versa. The mounting opening 16 is dimensioned to fit the width W of the front portion 210 to be inserted through the mounting opening 16. In the initial position, the front portion 210 is in a first orientation defined when the length of the front portion is substantially parallel to its longitudinal axis, or its length is oriented at 0 degrees with respect to its longitudinal axis.

[0088] Figures 4a and 4b shows a perspective view and a side view of an end portion of a releasable fastener assembly according to various embodiments. In an embodiment, the end portion 230 is a bolt having a head 232 and a threaded shank 231. The end portion 230 has a threaded shank 231 extending through its central axis. The threaded shank 231 is adapted to be received through the central opening of the locking component and received by the threaded aperture 212 of the front portion 210 in order to fasten the wear liner 60 to the structure 10. In order to affix the wear liner 60 to the structure 10, the head of the end portion 230 includes a tool recess configured to engage with a fastening tool for tightening the end portion 230. In some embodiments, the fastening tool can be an impact gun, socket wrench or spanner. When the end portion 230 is rotated in a first direction, for example, a clockwise direction by the fastening tool, due to the resistive engagement between the threaded shank 231 of the end portion 230 and the threaded aperture 212 of the front portion 210, the front portion 210 is caused to disengage from the locking component and to rotate in the first direction from the initial position in the first orientation to a final position in a second orientation.

[0089] Figures 5a-5c show a perspective view, a top view, and a side sectional view of a locking component of a releasable fastener assembly according to various embodiments. The locking component 220 includes a first portion 221 and a second portion 222. The first portion 221 includes the upper section of the locking component 220 and is dimensioned to extend through the liner opening 66 and the structure opening 16. The first portion 221 extends from the second portion 222 which includes a base and a central opening 224 through a central axis of the base. In some embodiments, the base is, but not limited to, a cylindrical shape. The second portion 222 is dimensionally larger than the first portion 221since it is designed not to extend through the liner opening 66. The base has an upper surface 225 that abuts against the inner surface of the liner opening 66.

[0090] In various embodiments, the first portion 221 has two protrusions 227,228 extending from the top surface 225 of the second portion 222. In an embodiment, the first portion 221 includes a first protrusion 227 and a second protrusion 228 where each protrusion extends from the second portion 222, and each protrusion 227, 228 is at least substantially identical to each other. The term “at least substantially identical” is to be understood to mean in particular that the protrusions have an identical shape and preferably an identical size apart from deviations caused by the manufacturing process. Each protrusion 227, 228 is located on opposing sides of the base or on opposing sides of the central opening 224. Each protrusion 227, 228 has a top surface from which an extension projects from the top surface of the protrusion 227, 228. In some embodiments, the top surface is flat, sloping or a combination of flat and sloping. Each extension includes an inner surface 223 and an outer surface 229 The inner surface 223 faces inwardly to the central opening 224. The inner surface 223 of the extension faces the inner surface 223 of the other opposing extension. In an embodiment, the inner surface 223 and the outer surface 229 are curved. In some embodiments, the extension has a half crescent moon shape when viewed from the top. The inner surfaces 223 of the extensions are radially curved in order to accommodate the radially curved surfaces of the front portion 210 so that it can receive the front portion 210 in the pre-installation and installation position, details of which will be explained later. In other words, the radius of the inner surface 223 is at least the same radius as the radius of the radially curved surface of the three corners of the front portion 210. In various embodiments, the protrusions 227, 228 also include inner surfaces that are adapted to receive the front portion 210 between the protrusions 227, 228 when the front portion 210 is in the final position in the second orientation.

[0091] Figures 6a and 6b show a perspective view and a top view of a support frame adapted for a locking component of a releasable fastener assembly according to various embodiments. The support frame 215 is configured for attachment to the locking component in order to provide a resistive force to the front portion 210 as it is disengagedfrom the locking component. It also provides a resistive force where there is no back wall in the mounting opening 10 and acts as a back wall for the releasable fastener assembly as it is being rotated from the installation position to the final position. The locking component 220 has extensions protruding from the first protrusion and the second protrusion. Each extension includes a threaded opening for receiving a bolt to fasten the support frame 215 to the extensions. The support frame 215 includes two openings 218 on each opposed end of the support frame 215. The two openings extend through the support frame 215 and are aligned with the threaded openings of the extensions of the locking component. Any standard bolts can be used to fasten the support frame 215 to the extensions.

[0092] Referring to Figures 1a and 1 b which shows a releasable fastener assembly in a pre-installation position in an exploded view, the pre-installation position is a position where an installer who wishes to secure the wear liner to the structure with a fastening tool is in a ready position to insert the releasable fastener assembly 200 into the liner opening 66 of the wear liner 60 and into the mounting opening 16 of the structure 10. In the preinstallation position, the support frame 215 is secured to the extensions of the locking component 220 and the front portion 210 is received by the inner surfaces 223 of the extensions central opening of the central portion 220 In some embodiments, the preinstallation position made up of the front portion 210 and the locking component 220 with the support frame 215.

[0093] When the wear liner 60 is lifted into position, for example, by a lifting system, that positions the wear liner into the installation position, i.e. where the liner opening 66 and the mounting opening 16 are aligned, the installer simply inserts the front portion 210 and the locking component 220 into the liner opening 66 and the mounting opening 16 into the installation position. The installation position is a position where a part of the releasable fastener assembly 200 is inserted into the mounting opening 16 of the structure 10. In the installation position, the front portion 210 is oriented horizontally (i.e., its length L is oriented at 0 degrees with respect to its longitudinal axis) which is the same position as the pre-installation position. The second portion 222 of the locking component 220 remains within the liner opening 66. The installer then inserts the end portion 230 into the lineropening 66 and screws the end portion 230 into the threaded aperture of the front portion 210. In this initial position, the front portion 210 is in a first orientation where its length L is substantially parallel to its longitudinal axis. In other words, the elongate nut (front portion) should be located within the extensions of the protrusions, or within the half crescent moon shaped extensions. Additionally, at least two corners of the radially curved surfaces of the elongate nut are received by the inner surfaces of the extensions, or within the half crescent moon shaped extensions. The purpose of the radially curved surfaces of the front portion is to keep the front portion in a relatively fixed position in the preinstallation position and installation position. In various embodiments, the releasable fastener assembly 200 is sold in the pre-installation position so that it is ready for the installer to immediately fit the fastening tool on to the end portion for immediate installation of the wear liner without having to adjust any components of the releasable fastener. This provides the advantage of efficient and quick fitment of the wear liners in operation.

[0094] Figures 7a-7d show a perspective sectional view, a perspective view, a rear view and a side view respectively of a releasable fastener assembly in a final position according to various embodiments. The final position is a position where the wear liner 60 is secured and clamped to the structure 10. In order to secure the wear liner 60 to the structure 10 from the installation position, the installer will have to tighten the end portion by using the fastening tool. When the end portion is rotated in a first direction, for example, a clockwise direction, due to the resistive engagement between the threaded shank of the end portion 230 and the threaded aperture of the front portion 210, the front portion 210 is caused to rotate in the same direction from the installation position to a final position. This in turn causes the front portion 210 to disengage from the locking component 220 and pushed against the support frame 215. The support frame 215 provides a resistive force against the front portion 210 as the end portion is further rotated by the fastening tool. Further rotation of the end portion 230 in the same first direction causes the front portion 210 to rotate itself into a second orientation that is substantially transverse to the first orientation. When it has rotated into the second orientation, i.e., with its length at approximately 90 degrees with respect to its longitudinal axis, this will cause the front portion 210 to be moved axially ordisplaced towards the end portion, resulting in the front portion 210 to be moved axially or displaced towards the locking component 220 and in between the protrusions 227, 228 such that the inner surfaces of the protrusions 227, 228 are facing the length L of the front portion 210. Further tightening of the end portion 230 will cause the front portion 210 to be moved axially or displaced towards an inner surface of the mounting opening 16 to abut the front portion against the inner surface of the mounting opening 16 thereby providing the clamping force of the wear liner 60 on the structure 10. At the same time, the front portion 210 is caused to be retained within the protrusions 227, 228 of the locking component, thereby clamping the wear liner 60 to the structure 10. In other words, the front portion 210 is retained within the inner surfaces of the two protrusions. When the front portion 210 is retained within the protrusions, it is prevented from rotational displacement in both clockwise and anti-clockwise directions and remains in the final position for the service life of the wear liner. This provides the advantage of minimal loosening of the front portion (i.e. bolt) even if the end portion loosens over time.

[0095] To release the fastener assembly 200 from its final position, in the case where the wear liner needs to be removed for replacement, the steps are reversed, i.e. from the final position to the installation position, and removal from the plates. The end portion is loosened using the fastening tool by rotating the fastening tool in a second direction, for example, an anti-clockwise direction. This will cause the front portion 210 to be displaced away from the inner surface of the mounting opening 16. At the same time, the front portion 210 is displaced away from the protrusions of the locking component. This causes the front portion to be loosened from the clamping force of the wear liner 60 on the structure 10. Once the front portion 210 is no longer retained within the protrusions, further anticlockwise rotation of the end portion will cause the front portion 210 to be rotated from the second orientation (,i.e. with its length L at approximately 90 degrees with respect to its longitudinal axis) to the first orientation (, i.e. with its length at 0 degrees with respect to its longitudinal axis) to the installation position. At this point, the wear liner 60 is loosened from the structure 10 and the installer can easily remove the wear liner and the releasable fastener assembly 200 from the liner opening 66 for replacement of the wear liner 60.100961 Figures 8a, 8b and 9 show a perspective view, a side view and an exploded perspective view of another releasable fastener assembly in a pre-installation position for securing a wear liner to a structure according to various embodiments. With reference to the aforesaid figures, a releasable fastener assembly 200 for securing a wear liner or an object (not shown for illustration purposes) to a structure 10 is shown. The releasable fastener assembly 200 comprises a front portion 210, a locking component 220 and an end portion 230. The locking component 220 together with the support frame 215 are the same as the previous embodiments and will not be further detailed. In this embodiment, the front portion 210 is a bolt having an elongate head and a threaded shank and the end portion 230 is a nut. In order to affix the wear liner 60 to the structure 10, the end portion 230 includes tool recesses configured to engage with a fastening tool for tightening the end portion 230. In some embodiments, the fastening tool can be an impact gun, socket wrench or spanner. The pre-installation position is a position where an installer who wishes to secure the wear liner to the structure with a fastening tool is in a ready position to insert the releasable fastener assembly 200 into the liner opening 66 of the wear liner 60 and into the mounting opening 16 of the structure 10.

[0097] Figures 10a and 10b show a side view and a top view respectively of another releasable fastener assembly in an installation position for securing a wear liner to a structure according to various embodiments. When the wear liner 60 is lifted into position, for example, by a lifting system, that positions the wear liner 60 into the installationposition, i.e. where the liner opening 66 and the mounting opening 16 are aligned, the installer simply inserts the front portion 210 and the locking component 220 into the liner opening 66 and the mounting opening 16 into the installation position. The installer then inserts the end portion 230 into the liner opening 66 and rotates the end portion 230 into the threaded shank of the front portion 210. In this initial position, the front portion 210 is in a first orientation where its length L is substantially parallel to its longitudinal axis. In other words, the elongate head (of the front portion) should be located within the extensions of the protrusions, or within the half crescent moon shaped extensions. Additionally, two corners of the radially curved surfaces of the elongate head are received by the inner surfaces of the extensions, or within the half crescent moon shaped extensions. The purpose of the radially curved surfaces of the front portion is to keep the front portion in a relatively fixed position in the pre-installation position and installation position. Tn various embodiments, the releasable fastener assembly 200 is sold in the preinstallation position so that it is ready for the installer to immediately fit the fastening tool on to the end portion for immediate installation of the wear liner without having to adjust any components of the releasable fastener. This provides the advantage of efficient and quick fitment of the wear liners in operation.

[0098] Figures 1 la and 1 lb show a perspective view and a rear view respectively of a releasable fastener assembly in a final position according to various embodiments. The final position is a position where the wear liner 60 (not shown) is secured and clamped to the structure 10. In order to secure the wear liner 60 to the structure 10 from the installation position, the installer will have to tighten the end portion by using a fastening tool 50. When the end portion 230 is rotated in a first direction, for example, a clockwise direction, due to the resistive engagement between the threaded opening of the end portion 230 and the threaded shank of the front portion 210, the front portion 210 is caused to rotate in the same direction from the installation position to a final position. This in turn causes the frontportion 210, or the elongate head 216, to disengage from the locking component 220 and pushed against the support frame 215. The support frame 215 provides a resistive force against the front portion 210 as the end portion 230 is further rotated by the fastening tool 50. Further rotation of the end portion 230 in the same first direction causes the front portion 210 to rotate itself into a second orientation that is substantially transverse to the first orientation. When it has rotated into the second orientation, i.e., the elongate head with its length at approximately 90 degrees with respect to its longitudinal axis, this will cause the front portion 210 to be displaced towards the end portion, resulting in the front portion 210 to be displaced towards the locking component 220 and in between the protrusions 227, 228 such that the inner surfaces of the protrusions 227, 228 are facing the length L of the front portion 210. Further tightening of the end portion 230 will cause the front portion 210 to be displaced towards an inner surface of the mounting opening 16 to abut the front portion against the inner surface of the mounting opening 16 thereby providing the clamping force of the wear liner 60 on the structure 10. This provides the advantage of minimal loosening of the front portion (i.e. bolt) even if the end portion loosens over time.[0099) Figures 12a-12c show a perspective view, a side view and a top view of a front portion of a releasable fastener assembly according to various embodiments. With reference to the aforesaid figures, the front portion 210 is a bolt that includes an elongate head 216 and a threaded shank 218. The elongate head 216 includes a planar upper surface and a bottom surface. In various embodiments, the bolt can include T-shaped bolts or other suitable types of bolts. The elongate head 216 of the bolt has a length L that is longer than its width W. The front portion 210 includes a radially curved surface at each corner of the front portion 210. While all four corners of the elongate head 216 are radially curved, the radially curved surface at two diagonally opposite comers is more pronounced and is of agreater radius than the curved surface at the remaining corners. By having the radially curved surfaces at the diagonally opposing corners of a greater radius than the remaining corners, this keeps the front portion 210 in a relatively fixed position in the pre-installation and installation position It also serves to prevent the front portion from rotating in the opposed direction (anti-clockwise direction) when in the pre-installation position and installation position. The more pronounced radially curved surfaces at the two diagonally opposing comers also allow the front portion to rotate smoothly into the final position from an initial position (at installation position) and vice versa.

[0100] Figures 13a-13c show a perspective view, a top view and a side view of an end portion of a releasable fastener assembly according to various embodiments. In an embodiment, the end portion 230 is a nut. The end portion 230 has a threaded opening 234 extending therethrough its central axis. The threaded opening 234 is adapted to receive through the central opening of the locking component the threaded shank 218 of the front portion 210 in order to fasten the wear liner 60 to the structure 10. The rear surface of the end portion 230, i.e. the surface facing the fastening tool 50, includes tool recesses 232 configured to be received by the fastening tool 50 for rotating the end portion 230.
