Nut having at least two parts

A nut includes an internal thread and at least two parts, each of the parts having a section of the internal thread which can be pushed onto an external thread in the radial direction. The parts may have connecting elements which interact and permit a relative displacement of the parts in a direction running radially to the axis of the internal thread into a position of use. The connecting elements may have guide surfaces which are inclined at an angle to the plane running radially to the axis of the internal thread and guide the parts in a rotational movement about an axis of rotation running transversely to the axis. A part may have a locking arm with a guide surface only on one side which produces the rotational movement during the displacement of the parts and bears against a complementary guide surface of the other part.

Helical guide and advancement flange with radially loaded lip

A spinal fixation device combines an open-headed anchor member, such as a bone screw or a hook, with a closure member to thereby clamp a spinal fixation rod to the anchor member. The anchor member has spaced apart arms forming a rod receiving channel. The arms have arm extensions or tabs connected to main portions of the arms by weakened regions to enable the tabs to be broken-off or separated after the rod is clamped. The closure member and inner surfaces of the arms and tabs have helical anti-splay guide and advancement interlocking flanges formed thereon which cooperate to prevent splaying the arms and extensions as the closure member is advanced into the rod receiving channel. The flanges have anti-splay contours which can be formed on load flanks or stab flanks of the flanges. The load flanks can be oriented in such a manner as to aid in the anti-splay characteristics of the flanges or to control the proportioning of axial stresses between the flanges.

Self-balancing adjustable flat panel mounting system

A self-balanced adjustable mounting system for a flat panel display. A display interface having a hollow, semi-spherical shell portion is attached to the flat panel display. The semi-spherical shell is formed with a generally constant radius of curvature. The center of the radius of curvature is disposed proximate the center of gravity of the flat panel display with the display interface attached. The display interface is received in a guide structure that has a bearing portion engaging the outer surface of the semi-spherical shell, and a second bearing portion engaging the inner surface of the semi-spherical shell through an aperture formed in the semi-spherical shell. The semi-spherical shell is guided between the first and second bearing portions so that the flat panel display and device interface are generally rotatable about the center of the radius of curvature of the semi-spherical shell. The display is self balancing in virtually any position in the range of travel of the device due to the location of the center of rotation proximate the center of gravity.

Torque-setting, tamper-resistant fastener and method and tool for use with same

A fastener includes a round, blind hole or pocket in its head. Installation and removal of the fastener is accomplished with a tool containing an eccentric segment on the end of a shaft. When rotated within the pocket, the eccentric segment displaces laterally relative to the shaft to provide a friction grip to the lateral wall of the pocket. The strength of the grip is proportional to the applied torque. Eccentric displacement allows rotation but prevents the tool from spinning out of the fastener thereby eliminating cam-out and surface damage resulting from contact with a spinning tool tip. The eccentric head of the tool can be made disposable and to shear off when a predetermined torque is reached. The smooth-sided round hole offers no purchase for commonly available tools; making the fastener tamper-resistance. In another embodiment, the fastener includes a raised portion in the pocket. A tool having a complementary opening shears off the raised portion at a predetermined torque.

A self-balancing adjustable mounting system for a flat panel display. A display interface having a hollow, frusto-spherical shell portion is attached to the flat panel display. The display interface is received in a guide structure that has a bearing portion engaging the outer surface of the frusto-spherical shell, and a second bearing portion engaging the inner surface of the frusto-spherical shell. The frusto-spherical shell is guided between the first and second bearing portions so that the flat panel display and device interface are generally rotatable about the center of the radius of curvature of the semi-spherical shell. A friction adjustment mechanism enables selective adjustment of the amount of friction between the first and second bearing portions and the frusto-spherical shell so as to enable the flat panel display to be fixed in a position to inhibit undesired movement of the display due to contact or other cause.

Telescopic nut

A nut assembly is disclosed that will ensure that the shank of a bolt that features a measurable grip length will pass through the contact plane of adjoining members. The nut assembly also allows the desired compressive force in the adjoining members to be attained by using a telescopic feature of the nut to allocate additional thread action for the bolt, enabling the bolt to be drawn into the nut further than what would be allowed by a standard nut. The adaptability of the nut assembly can eliminate the need for washers or shims to adjust the shank penetration of the bolt. The nut assembly is useful for application in which the specified thread length and the grip length of the bolt is incompatable with the abutment thickness of the adjoining members.
