Expandable Self-Anchoring Interbody Cage for Orthopedic Applications

ActiveUS20130158669A1Maintain and create lordosisEasy to useBone implantSpinal implantsSpinal cageInterbody cage
The present invention is directed to an expandable spinal fusion intervertebral implant that provides for maintaining and creating lordosis in the human spine that can be filled with biologics while in situ to encourage spinal fusion. A threaded rod that traverses an insertion / injection handle can be rotated to operate a screw within the interbody cage that displaces opposing vertical tapped sliding wedges, causing them to converge towards each other. Such contact causes the operation of a horizontal wedge that acts as a lift to expand the interbody cage to one of various dimensions in a preferred range. At its desired expansion, the spinal fusion implant of the present invention is sized to fit within the disc space between two vertebral bodies and fill all voids left while the vertical and horizontal wedges operate within, due to the biologics being contained within the interbody cage.

Method and relaxable distracters for in-situ formation of intervertebral disc prosthesis

A method and a distracter for replacing a removed, intervertebral disc with a prosthesis. An inter-body distracter is inserted within the intervertebral space between adjacent vertebrae, the vertebrae are distracted and are supported by the distracter. A fluid, curable polymer is injected into the intervertebral space and around the distracter and then the polymer is cured to a semi-rigid, pliable, elastically deformable state. The distracter is then disabled from supporting compressive forces applied by the vertebrae and remains in place. The preferred distracter is a scissors jack having intermediate bearings joined by links to support feet. One of the bearings has a threaded lateral bore and the second bearing has a lateral bore. A rod extends through the bores and has a threaded portion extending from a first end of the rod and threadedly engaging the threaded bearing. The inside diameter of the second bore is greater than the outside diameter of the threaded portion of the rod so the rod is axially slidable through the second bore. A thrust bearing is fixed on the threaded rod and positioned laterally outwardly of the second bearing for forcing the second bearing laterally toward the first bearing upon rotation of the rod in one direction and for permitting the rod to be withdrawn from the bearing by rotating the rod in the opposite direction and disengaging it from the first bearing. Alternative distracters are also disclosed.

Universal adjustable spacer assembly

In a universal, adjustable spacer assembly, first and second opposed wedges have faces that are inclined with respect to a longitudinal axis. As the wedges translate along the longitudinal axis with respect to one another, vertical distance between an upper face and a lower face of the first and second wedges respectively changes. Longitudinally displaced portions of a rotatable member such as a threaded rod are received in a first and a second collar member pivotally mounted with respect to the first and second wedges respectively. As the rod rotates, longitudinal distance between the collar members changes, and the wedges slide against each other, the collar members rotate within each wedge. In a further form, opposing track members may be fixed to inclined surfaces of the first and second wedges respectively.

Threaded hoist ring screw retainer

An omni-positional hoist ring assembly including a bushing element that includes a sleeve with an axial length, a proximal end and a distal end. A load bearing flange is radially disposed about the proximal end of the sleeve. The sleeve has an internal thread extending at least part way of the axial length of the sleeve. A mounting screw element has a major axis, a head, and a shank disposed generally co-axially around the major axis. The shank includes a threaded shank portion and a bearing portion. The bearing portion is a generally cylindrical axially extending portion of the shank that has a diameter approximately equal to the minor diameter of the thread in the threaded shank portion. A thrust washer element is provided between the head and the distal end of the sleeve. A body element receives the in-turned opposed ends of the legs of a lifting loop element in sockets. The lifting loop is free to pivot. The body element is free to rotate about the sleeve, so the lifting loop will self align with a load that is applied to it from any direction within a hemisphere centered on the major axis of the mounting screw element. The elements of the hoist rig assembly are assembled by aligning them and inserting the mounting screw element into the sleeve and threadably advancing it until the bearing is aligned with the internal thread so further rotation of the mounting screw element does not threadably advance the mounting screw element relative to the sleeve.
